To Slurp or Not to Slurp: Rules of Eating Ramen - Duration: 2:05.

Hi my name is Ivan Orkin and this is my shop.

We're going to talk about the best ways to eat a bowl of ramen.

The most important thing is to eat the ramen while its hot.

Any good ramen shop will serve you a bowl of ramen that's smoking hot and you need

to eat it right away because the noodles are overcooking.

Its a lot like pizza.

If you're a real New Yorker you know that you don't wait for the pizza to cool down,

you eat it while its hot and you risk burning your mouth.

Ramen is absolutely the same.

You need to slurp.

What it does is cool down the noodles.

Don't fight the noodles.

Take a little less than you think you wanna eat.

You want to pull them out from the pile cause otherwise you'll never be able to slurp.

easy on the toppings if you're a first timer.

So when you order your first bowl of ramen ever, just get it simple.

Taste it, see if you really like ramen.

And then you can start dumping on the toppings and going for the shop's special of the day.

Don't forget to hydrate.

I've been to ramen shops in Tokyo where afterwards my whole face is swollen with salt.

Its just the nature of the beast, so drink up.

Ramen comes with a terrible spoon.

Its called a Renge, Chinese in origin.

Its a great way to be able to dip it into the bowl.

But in Japan its totally cool to just pick up the bowl and drink from it.

And remember, there are no real rules at the end of the day.

You're letting your hair down, you want to have fun.

Get splashy, get noisy, get messy, but most importantly enjoy yourself.

FEMA Is Preparing For A Solar Storm That Would Take Out The Grid - Duration: 5:04.

FEMA Is Preparing For A Solar Storm That Would Take Out The Grid

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Administration) is planning for a massive solar storm that

would be so strong, it would take down the power grid.

Noting that the rare, yet high-consequence scenario has the potential for catastrophic

impact on our nation and FEMAs ability to respond.

According to unpublished FEMA documents obtained by Government Attic, a FOIA (Freedom of Information

Act) database and non-profit organization, the Department of Homeland Security agency

once mapped out a disaster plan for the occurrence of another geomagnetic super storm like

the one the occurred in 1859.

Back then, the sun flung a giant plume of magnetized plasma out into space.

The coronal mass ejection (CME), the sibling of a massive solar flare, traveled the 93

million miles between the Sun and Earth in only 17.6 hours.

Today, its known as the Carrington Event and is remembered by the largest geomagnetic

storm in the history of recorded space weather.

No other storm has matched it in speed or magnitude.

When the shock wave of accelerated particles arrived on September 1, 1859, the disturbances

to Earths magnetosphere were so great that telegraph communications across Europe and

North America went on the fritz.

Sparks leaped from the telegraph infrastructure, and machinery was so inundated with electric

currents that operators were able to transmit messages while disconnected from battery power.

Compasses even wiggled, and brilliant auroras were reportedly seen as far south as the Caribbean.

But that doesnt mean the ill-equipped government isnt preparing for the inevitability, in

fact, they are.

Despite our superior ability to predict these events, the stakes are exponentially higher

in a modern, hyper-connected world.

FEMA predicts that a geomagnetic storm of this intensity would be a catastrophe in

slow motion. Space weather events happen all the time, and many are harmless.

For example, an event causing radio blackouts, solar radiation storms, and geomagnetic storms

would be abnormal, yet the ripple effects on the power grid and communications would

severely limit FEMAs ability to respond to a nationwide crisis.

Within 20 minutes of the CMEs occurrence, FEMA estimates that 15 percent of the satellite

fleet would be lost due to solar panel damage.

Solar radiation from the incoming storm would add 3-5 years worth of exposure to the

panels, degrading older satellites to the point of inoperability.

Low orbiting satellites, such as Iridium and Globalstar, may be less affected.

Cellular service would be disrupted, and a loss of GPS capabilities could complicate

FEMA operations.

Motherboard

Should a storm of this magnitude hit, there wouldnt be much the government can do.

And of course, this would be the perfect opportunity to round up the masses for a trip to a FEMA

camp.

Individuals would need to band together to help get things back online, but it would

all take time.

Those in heavily populated regions would be hit the hardest and evacuation of over 100

million people would be impossible, and even if it was, there would be no unaffected region

to send the evacuees other than the FEMA camps.

Prepare yourself, because the mere fact that this government document exists could mean

that there is something we dont know.

Организация продажи мяса для мусульман - Duration: 3:53.

I would like to share a simple but interesting idea. I used to live in Kazan (Tatarstan), where more than 60% of the population profess Islam. As you know, the religion forbids Muslims to eat pork. And the meat of any other animal it should be made with the observance of religious ritual and necessarily consecrated by prayer. Such meat is called "Halal" or "Hellenism", and in the markets of Kazan there is a special point where they sell only such meat. I am a believer, but tolerant of religious people. In addition, during the life in Tatarstan, I learned quite well the culture and life of Muslim families. So when I moved to the other native Slavic - region, I was immediately struck by the unintentional "discrimination" of Muslims. In the city markets on "special Muslim" meat and never heard. Of course, as entrepreneurs, working with meat products, has lived his entire life in this "UN-Islamic" part of Russia and they are quite satisfied with the status quo. With the sale of meat no problems, I think... In General, the idea is to procure and implement meat-"Halal". Now everywhere Muslims live (even in small quantities). Azerbaijanis, Tatars, refugees from Muslim republics - they are sure to have in Your city. So if there's nothing you can do about it - you need to earn money. The idea is not so difficult. Islam permits use in the production of "Halal"a prayer recorded on a magnetic medium (advanced religion, do not say anything). Once purchased the cassette (preferably CD). The employee - holer cattle - must be a Muslim. To find such it is possible (and even necessary if you want to work without cheating). It remains only to buy the livestock. As an option, you can only harvest the meat, and pass on the realization of the most "traditional" sellers in the market (so you do not touch the SES and other bureaucracy). Release from buyers will not be Muslim in the majority, in contrast to the Orthodox, leading a righteous life and honor religious dogma. Even somewhat greater price compared to regular meat will not affect demand. Competition special should not be. The main thing - to mislead the other sellers, which is the meat harvested in this way is very, very difficult (up to the tales in a special way fed cattle) and that in the case of fraud by the seller, the wrath of the Islamists will be huge. You can even say that the September 11 terrorist attack in new York was made because of the world trade center tried to sell to the Arabs is wrong meat is meat", Halal". After that, merchants will be much quieter buy "Halal" through an intermediary, that is through you. Finally, assuming the criticism. Cassettes of prayers, I do not sell. Benefits no special (5 RUB./PCs) no offer. And especially not recruit anyone in the Islamic terrorist group. Just got an idea - maybe someone will seem interesting. Good luck to all!

Project Veritas Exposes CNN's Van Jones The Russia Thing Is Just - politics - Duration: 2:15.

Project Veritas Exposes CNN's Van Jones: "The Russia Thing Is Just A Big Nothing Burger"

Yesterday, after dropping his first undercover CNN bombshell, which starred producer John

Bonifield admitting that CNN's endless 'Russian meddling' crusade was "mostly bullshit" directed

by the network's CEO Jeff Zucker with the sole intent of spiking ratings, Project Veritas'

James O'Keefe promised there was more to come.

And, all we knew was that the subject of the second video would be "someone we all knew..."

As it turns out, that 'someone' is none other than CNN's Van Jones who inadvertently got

caught revealing his true thoughts on CNN's 'Russian meddling' narrative, namely that

the whole story is a "big nothing burger."

PV Reporter: "What do you think is going to happen this week with the whole Russia thing?"

Van Jones: "The Russia Thing Is Just A Big Nothing Burger"

PV Reporter: "Really?"

Van Jones: "Yeah."

Here is the full Van Jones footage for your viewing pleasure:

Of course, while we're happy that Van Jones decided to tell the truth, if only while he

thought no one was listening, we do wonder how he intends to explain his seemingly conflicted

'on-air' versus 'off-air' personalities to his children.

As you may recall, Jones was the same distraught CNN commentator who spent election night describing

Trump as a "bully" and a "bigot" all while saying that his "biggest fear" was how he

could explain Trump's victory to his children...

Perhaps it's time to think about how you can explain to your children why you exploited

your position and fame to provoke mass hysteria among a divided American electorate, over

a story you knew to be false...hysteria which very well could have contributed to a mass

shooting that nearly claimed the life of Steven Scalise.

The Golden Age of Hollywood: Crash Course Film History #11 - Duration: 9:56.

When I say Hollywood, you probably think of big-budget movies, star-studded premieres,

and studios with giant backlots pumping out film after film.

Most of those associations really began sometime between the 1920s and the 1950s.

Once audiences could hear actors speak, listen to pre-recorded musical scores, and enjoy

sound effects, film cemented its place as the main medium for mass communication, art,

and commerce.

And as important as Hollywood was during the Silent Era, nobody could compete after the

arrival of sound.

New major film studios emerged, each with their own style and favorite celebrities:

before George Clooney and Jennifer Lawrence, there was Clark Gable and Janet Leigh.

This cascade of films led to more technological innovations, too, like color film and the

widescreen formats we still use today.

This was the Golden Age of Hollywood.

[singing] Hollywooood ba-ba-da-ba-d– OK, I'll stop.

[Opening Music Plays]

After the Stock Market Crash in October of 1929, most parts of the American economy took

a real hit.

But not Hollywood.

And at the height of the Great Depression in 1933, roughly a quarter of the American

workforce couldn't find a job, and millions of others were barely making ends meet.

So you'd think that the last thing people would do with their hard-earned money was

go to the movies.

And yet, the Depression was one of the best things to happen to the American film business.

That's depressing...

In fact, more films were released by the major studios during the 1920s and '30s than any

other decade – averaging about 800 a year, compared to less than 500 per year today.

It was cheaper to go to the movies than a play or a concert, and cinema became a means

of escape.

As we've talked about, films are an illusion of reality.

And that illusion was super attractive to people whose day-to-day reality was often

pretty bleak.

Genre films became more popular – things like gangster films, musicals, westerns, and

screwball comedies.

Anything to take people's mind off their own struggles and celebrate good old American

values of optimism, resilience, ambition, and courage.

At the height of Hollywood's Golden Age, five film studios ruled the town.

All five were vertically-integrated, just like the major studios of the Silent Era.

They each had their own distinct reputations and focused on different kinds of films.

First up, we have Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer – or MGM – which was the biggest studio in the

1930s.

Louis B. Mayer ran MGM with his business partner, Irving Thalberg.

Mayer was the savvy businessman of the two; he approved the budgets and oversaw the distribution

and marketing.

Thalberg, on the other hand, was a former producer, and the mind behind the stories

and actual production.

Together, they made slick, big-budget musicals, comedies, melodramas, and literary adaptations

– sparing no expense on sets, costumes, extras, and the biggest movie stars.

Think of The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, and Mutiny on the Bounty.

I'm talking opulence, people!

Next is Paramount Pictures, which was known as the most "European" studio, because

they lured a lot of filmmakers away from Germany and the U.K.

They also gave these filmmakers more leeway to put their own stamp on movies – hits

like Shanghai Express, The Sign of the Cross, and Morocco.

Our third player, Warner Brothers, branded itself as the studio of the working class.

They churned out low-budget melodramas, gritty gangster movies like The Public Enemy with

James Cagney, and musicals set in the Depression like Footlight Parade, with James Cagney.

The fourth major studio was 20th Century-Fox, which made its reputation thanks to its chief

director and its most profitable star, not James Cagney

That director was John Ford, who won back-to-back best director Oscars for The Grapes of Wrath

and How Green Was My Valley, while Shirley Temple sang and danced her way through a string

of wholesome hits.

And lastly, RKO was the home of the extremely popular Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals.

Can I do a dance number Nick?

Nick: Nope.

RKO also took a lot of chances, producing everything from Howard Hawks' screwball

comedy Bringing Up Baby, to the 1933 version of King Kong, and one of the most influential

films of all time, Citizen Kane.

Never heard of it.

Now, all five of these studios dominated the production, distribution, and exhibition of

films – for a while.

But a U.S. Supreme Court Case in 1948, along with the coming of television, signaled a

major turning point.

In the case, known as United States versus Paramount Pictures, the government argued

that the major studios were in violation of antitrust laws.

In other words, by owning both the production studios and the movie theaters, they were

exercising an unfair monopoly and stifling competition.

The Supreme Court agreed, and forced the studios to break up their businesses, sell their theaters,

and focus on just production and distribution.

Hollywood continued to lead the global film market for another 10 or 15 years, but that

near-complete control over the industry was ending.

We'll talk a lot more about this next time.

Now, the Golden Age of Hollywood saw some major technical leaps in the film business,

too, including: color.

Filmmakers had been experimenting with color since the dawn of cinema.

The earliest techniques involved hand-tinting individual frames, a painstaking process that

had to be repeated for each print of each film.

Not great.

Over the next few decades, engineers found ways to use stencils to tint films much faster.

They also developed other means of adding color, like bathing the film stock in dyes

that fit the mood of the scene, called toning – red for violence, blue for sorrow, green

for...grassy.

By the mid-1920s, nearly 90 percent of Hollywood films were either tinted, toned, or some combination

of the two.

Which was great, except the color itself looked wildly artificial.

And once Hollywood converted to sound-on-film technology, the tinting interfered with the

film stock's ability to record proper sound.

Crash Course Film History, tl;dr: it's hard.

So filmmakers needed to figure out color cinematography – capturing color with the image.

As early as 1861, a Scottish physicist named James Clerk Maxwell – who we talked about

in Crash Course Physics (well, I didn't, Shini did) – built the foundations of color

photography.

The light all around us is made up of a spectrum of different wavelengths, some of which we

see as visible colors.

Knowing this, Maxwell figured out that all those colors can be derived from some combination

of red, yellow, and blue.

Beginning in 1906, artists and engineers tried for 15 years to use this knowledge to achieve

color cinematography.

But, much like me in high school, they kept failing.

Their experiments were unreliable or too expensive.

Then along came Technicolor.

In 1922, the Technicolor Corporation saw its first success with a special beam-splitting

camera that could make two separate negatives.

The light entered the camera and was split into different wavelengths, just like how

sunlight hits a prism and splits into a rainbow.

Half continued straight ahead, while the other half was diverted 90 degrees, to produce two

film negatives.

These negatives were chemically treated, dyed either blue or red, and cemented together.

Then you could run that final film strip through a regular projector, and voilà!

Even though they weren't spot-on, the colors in these films were more reliable and accurate

than any of the earlier attempts.

And while that beam-splitting camera was expensive, at least theaters didn't have to buy new

projectors to show color films.

Over the next decade, Technicolor expanded its system into a three-color process, with

a camera that recorded the original image onto three separate negatives – red, blue,

and green.

And by 1932, this process created such high-quality, vibrant results, that Technicolor ended up

with a virtual monopoly on color film for the next 20 years.

Throughout the 1930s, filmmakers and studios gradually began playing around with Technicolor.

By the middle of the decade, producer David O. Selznick turned a corner by casting big

stars in color films for the first time.

And as the 1930s came to a close, Hollywood released a series of high-profile hits that

proved color was here to stay.

These films that used Technicolor ranged from the Errol Flynn swashbuckler The Adventures

of Robin Hood, to classics like The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind, and even animated

features like Disney's Snow White and Pinnochio.

Advances in color cinematography would continue to develop over the years, but the basics

stayed the same until film stock gave way to digital video in the 21st century.

Now, a third technical element of cinema was standardized during the Golden Age of Hollywood.

It's something called aspect ratio – that's the ratio of the movie screen's width to

its height.

Back in 1932, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences – the folks who give out

the Oscars – established a standard aspect ratio of 4:3, which looks like this.

Also known as the Academy aperture, this ratio isn't a square, but it's closer to one

than we're used to these days.

That's because most movies we see today are shot in an aspect ratio of 16:9, which

looks like this.

That's more like it!

We often call this widescreen.

And so much film and TV is shot at this ratio that most new screens are built to fit it.

But those are just two possible aspect ratios.

Back in the 1950s, some filmmakers experimented with an extreme widescreen ratio called Cinerama.

This process involved shooting a film with three separate synchronized cameras hooked

together in an arc, and projecting it from three synchronized projectors.

Weird.

The screen was shaped in a similar arc, kind of wrapping itself around the audience.

Y'know, for a real immersive experience.

And the final aspect ratio of Cinerama was about 8:3, which looks like this.

The most famous film shot in Cinerama was the western epic How the West Was Won.

But, as you can probably guess, this process was too expensive and complicated to achieve

widespread use.

And it was bad for performer's necks.

On the heels of Cinerama came CinemaScope.

Rather than shooting with multiple cameras, CinemaScope utilized something called an anamorphic

lens.

This was a special lens for cameras that recorded a wider image, but squeezed it laterally so

that everything would fit onto standard 35mm film stock.

When the film was projected, a similar lens attached to the projector would "unsqueeze"

the image, expanding it back out, and projecting it up onto the screen.

The result was an impressive 2.55:1 aspect ratio.

Audiences got their first taste of it in the 1953 biblical epic The Robe.

And by the end of that year, every major Hollywood studio except Paramount was licensed to make

CinemaScope films.

Over time, the ratio was reduced to 2.35:1, and in the mid-1950s, the American film industry

had almost entirely converted to shooting anamorphic widescreen films.

It took some time for filmmakers to adjust to widescreen shooting.

When you move from an aspect ratio of 4:3 to 16:9, that's a whole lotta extra room

to fill.

So what do you do with it?

Well, we fill it with, like, knick knacks and stuff.

Close-ups, especially of faces, became difficult to frame, while landscapes got easier.

At first, widescreen films rewarded composition and long takes over editing.

Filmmakers built their stories by filling the frame, rather than cutting to new images.

Genres like the western, the musical, and large-scale epics all lent themselves to these

kinds of world-building possibilities.

In the end, the technical advancements of sound, color, and an aspect ratio that could

surround the audience made the powerful Hollywood studios the center of the cinematic universe

from the late 1920s to the late 1950s.

It was a Golden Age whose echoes are felt in our films today.

Today we learned about how the the American studio system took advantage of sound film

and the Great Depression to achieve global dominance.

We discussed the development of color cinematography and what it meant for filmmakers and film

audiences.

And we examined aspect ratio, and how the move to widescreen cinema affected films being

made.

Next time, we'll learn about how filmmakers in Europe and the United States reacted against

the formulaic movies coming out of Hollywood and created a new wave of gritty, irreverent,

and innovative cinema.

Beyond Today -- When Nations Rise and Fall - Duration: 28:27.

[Darris McNeely] Have you ever heard the term "a thief in the night?"

It refers to someone or some significant event coming upon one suddenly, without warning.

An unforeseen event that changes life in an instant.

The term comes from the Bible and it is used to refer to significant events in prophecy

that will suddenly come upon an unsuspecting and ill-prepared world.

It describes a time when world events suddenly happen and everything changes.

Peace becomes war, and turmoil and upheaval are the result.

Could today's world events suddenly speed up and overnight your world is a different

place?

The Bible says it can.

Join us on Beyond Today as we discover "When Nations Rise and Fall."

[Announcer] Join our host Darris McNeely and his guests, as they help you understand your

future on Beyond Today!

[Darris] Look at today's world.

The United States is the dominating power.

China is rising in power and influence among Asian nations.

European nations have created a union that has brought a measure of peace to an often

war-torn continent.

The Middle East has conflicts—but has been kept from spilling completely out into the

rest of the world.

Do you think today's world will always remain the way that it is?

This is the world we have today.

It has been going along relatively the same for as long as we can remember.

Now think about that phrase I just said, "as long as we can remember."

As long as I can remember, as long as you can remember is really a very short time,

even though it is just about all our life.

You see, all my adult life I have lived in the United States and enjoyed the great blessing

of prosperity that comes from the world's best and strongest economy.

America's power in just about every area you would imagine has given me, and you, a

pretty good life.

I can carry this passport—a United States password—whenever I go abroad.

And I carry my United States dollar.

Together, they have given me a freedom of entry to many parts of the world.

You see, our lives have been made comfortable and safe in our present, modern world.

But will it always remain so?

The Bible tells us that history has not nor always will be so tranquil and peaceful.

Let's look at what it says about history and prophecy.

The apostle Paul writes, "Concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have

no need that I should write to you.

For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the

night.

For when they say, "Peace and safety!" then sudden destruction comes upon them, as

labor pains upon a pregnant woman.

And they shall not escape" (1 Thessalonians 5:1-3).

Bible prophecy shows us God controls history and the destiny of nations.

God determines when nations rise and fall.

Now what could this mean for America and today's great powers?

You see, today's world could change virtually overnight.

It's happened before and the Bible tells us it will happen again.

But you can understand and not be surprised by dramatic changes in world events.

There is one historian who understands this principle of a "thief in the night" very

well.

He's Harvard historian Niall Ferguson.

He wrote an analysis of recent world history that shows exactly how the idea "thief in

the night" scenario has happened, and could happen again in current history.

He wrote an article in Foreign Affairs magazine and there he showed that many large nations

of the past were gone in a few short years.

They were strong, functioning nations and then they faded virtually overnight.

Ferguson goes on and gives the example of the collapse of the Soviet Union over a short

period of about five years from 1986 to 1991.

The Soviet Union went from a position of global strength to collapse and the world was surprised

and stunned.

No one predicted the collapse and disintegration of a global nuclear power that had dominated

European politics since 1917.

He wrote: "If ever an empire fell off a cliff—rather than gently declining—it

was the one founded by Lenin" (ibid., p. 30).

World empires are large complex systems that can be turned upside down in a short time.

One small event that is missed by experts can create conditions that lead to larger

events that create fear, and loss of confidence and chaos.

Probably the best example of this is the assassination of Austrian Archduke Ferdinand in June of

1914.

That event was the fuse that lit the powder keg of World War I.

No one saw it at the time, but events quickly got out of control and within weeks, Europe

was at war.

A hundred years later, the world is still dealing with the effects of one small event

that led to the collapse of empires and millions of people dead.

A more recent event was the near meltdown of the world financial system back in September

of the year 2008.

Massive debt and a complex web of financial arrangements created a financial crisis that

brought down large Wall Street financial institutions.

Large global companies like General Motors nearly went bankrupt.

In America, the situation was so serious that the nation's financial structure nearly

went under.

One report said we were 48 hours away from our debit cards not working at the neighborhood

ATM.

Could you imagine the panic that would set in if overnight your credit cards would not

work at the gas pumps or on the internet?

The global economy is still recovering from that event.

It's an object lesson in how quickly events, even small events, can happen and turn around

the world and turn it upside down.

The historian Ferguson concludes by observing that "empires behave like all complex...systems.

They function...for some unknowable period.

And then, quite abruptly, they collapse…

It is sudden" (ibid., p. 32).

He then asks: "What if collapse does not arrive over a number of centuries but comes

suddenly, like a thief in the night?"

("Complexity and Collapse," p. 22).

Sounds like what we just read from the Bible doesn't it?

"Like a thief in the night."

What the Bible says about the end-time events culminating in the Day of the Lord applies

to the sudden collapse of powerful nations and empires throughout history.

What historians miss in their studies is what can be called the missing dimension in world

affairs.

That missing dimension is the hand of God in the rise and fall of great nations and

empires.

You see, the Bible, the Word of God, is a chronicle of ancient nations that rose and

fell according to His plan and purpose.

Nations like Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece and Rome—all are mentioned in the

Bible and all played key roles in working with the nation of Israel and the Church founded

by Jesus Christ.

Even today, the lessons of empires embedded in the Bible apply as we watch the modern

world move toward what Christ said would be the end of the age.

Of all the examples in the Bible to examine, there is one that fits what we have been discussing.

It's one of the "remote" sections of the Bible.

It's the story of the collapse of the great ancient nation of Assyria.

Now Assyria figures prominently in the story of Israel and Judah.

Its kings brought large armies to capture the nations of Israel, taking captive the

northern ten-tribe nation of Israel, removing every trace of their existence.

The Assyrian king, Sennacherib also brought 180,000 troops against the walls of Jerusalem

only to have them killed in one night by the hand of God.

Assyria was large and a long-lived empire of nearly 1,000 years in the region that we

call the Middle East–where the modern nations of Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Turkey exist.

Their cities, the Assyrian cities, they were large.

Their armies, very powerful.

The Assyrians thought their nation would always exist.

But God had other plans.

The story of Assyria's collapse is told in the biblical book of the prophet Nahum,

one of the books in that section that is called "The Minor Prophets."

Nahum's prophecy gives testimony to the truth that God governs world history.

Let's look briefly at this very compelling message.

The prophet Nahum lived in the seventh century BC in the nation of Judah.

It's possible that Nahum had a position as an emissary, or an ambassador, to the great

nation of Assyria while his own country, Judah was a vassal state of Assyria.

Now what did it mean to be a vassal state?

Well it meant that Judah had to pay a yearly amount of money to Assyria as protection money

to remain semi-independent.

A lot of gold, silver and other goods were transferred annually to the Assyrian treasury.

Nahum may have been one who carried the money to Assyria.

It would explain how the prophecy of his contains very specific descriptions of the Assyrian

capital, the great city called Nineveh.

And Nahum did not like what he saw.

Nahum was moved by God to write some very strong condemnation of the city.

While in Nineveh, Nahum would've observed the large city, and its walls, and its gates,

and its broad boulevards, its buildings, its palaces, and its squares, which are all a

part of what he describes in his very short prophecy.

Nahum says, "The chariots rage in the streets.

They jostle one another in the broad roads.

They seem like torches.

They run like lightning."

You see, the city of Nineveh had broad streets and broad avenues in its ultimate form and

setting after it had been in embellished by all of its kings.

And Nahum goes on to describe, "He remembers his nobles.

They stumble in their walk.

They make haste to her walls, and the defense is prepared.

The gates of the rivers are opened and the palace is dissolved and its vast wealth."

(Nahum 2:4-6).

In Nahum 2:9, here of the same chapter, the prophet goes on and says, "Take spoil of

silver.

Take spoil of gold.

There is no end of treasure or wealth of every desirable price."

An apt description of what Assyria did.

As they would wage war, conquer a city, a nation, they would loot the treasures.

And that would give them an impassioned, powerful indictment of the city of Nineveh and the

Assyrian power.

Nahum, God's prophet, is moved by the Spirit of God's to write this message of God's

judgment in very simple and clear language.

You see, Assyria was a vicious nation that liked to revel in its wars.

They wanted to remember their conquests with large elaborate stone reliefs that they placed

in their government buildings for all to see.

Archaeologists have uncovered these scenes.

We can see how the culture reveled in killing and conquest.

Nahum says, "Woe to the bloody city."

(Nahum 3:1) And Nineveh was a bloody city.

The Assyrians had a well-earned reputation for their treatment of other people.

And because of this evil, Nahum pronounced God's judgment.

"The Lord has given a command concerning you.

Your name shall be perpetuated no longer."

(Nahum 1:14).

Their name would be wiped out and forgotten.

And once the city falls, which it did in the year 612 BC, Nineveh was quickly forgotten.

The Assyrian kings would boast of defending the honor of their Assyrians gods.

And they also took the gold and the silver from the other nations.

And they carried it back into Nineveh.

And Nahum shows that all of this wealth, all of it, was going to disappear.

He wrote, "Take spoil of silver.

Take spoil of gold," because all of it was there in Nineveh and that's why he could

say, "There's no end of treasure or wealth of every desirable prize."

It had all been taken to Nineveh.

And quite likely, Nahum had carried even Judah's share of that and deposited it there as bribe

money.

It goes on, "She is empty, desolate, and waste" (Nahum 2:9-10).

Nahum is saying it was all going to be taken away.

And it was.

We see how the story concludes.

God says, "Behold, I am against you...I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the

sword will devour your young lions.

I will cut off your prey from the earth.

The voice of your messengers will be heard no more...It shall come to pass that all who

look upon you will flee from you and say, 'Nineveh is laid waste.

Who will bemoan her?

Where shall I seek comforters for you?"

(Nahum 2:13; Nahum 3:17)

For hundreds of years their wickedness passed back and forth over the peoples of that Middle

Eastern region.

And now, God was saying through His prophet, that it was going to come to them.

And so it did.

Nineveh and the Assyrian empire disappeared from history and was forgotten.

You see, God's in control of history and when God moves it's like a "thief in the

night."

Change and destruction can come very quickly.

There's an interesting story after the fall of Nineveh, about 200 years later, after the

fall of the city.

In the year 400 BC, there's a great story about a group of Greek mercenary soldiers,

called the Ten Thousand.

They had been in Persia waging a battle as mercenaries.

The money runs out and the tide of battle turns against them, and they finally come

to the point and they say, "We're had enough.

We're going home."

So they get began to make their way back to the west, back toward Greece.

And as they're making their way home, they camp one night on the Tigris River near this

huge mound of dirt and the evident spoils of something that was there.

One of their soldiers, a man by the name of Xenophon, who actually wrote the account.

He was an eyewitness and he wrote—and he doesn't even know in his history that he's

looking at the ruins of the city of Nineveh.

Here's a story of a group of Greek soldiers camping on the ruins of this great city of

Nineveh and they don't know what's in front of them.

It's a lesson for any great and large nation then and now.

God judges the nations.

God controls history.

God decides when nations rise and fall.

Could you imagine a time when America might not exist?

That great cities like Chicago or New York would no longer be remembered?

It's hard for us to imagine that.

To even think like this is to conjure science fiction and fantasy.

But it has happened in history.

It could happen again.

It's a lesson in how transitory power can be.

And there is a lesson for us today, how quickly things can change.

America today is a great power, a world superpower.

It is great because God made it great.

And America will remain great until God removes His blessing.

That's something we should never forget.

When God removes His blessing, and it can happen because of sin, then it will be a different

world order than what we see today.

America has been guided and blessed by the hand of Almighty God.

And we should understand our history and our time on the world stage and what it has been.

Because God made promises to the biblical patriarch Abraham, we have been blessed with

prosperity, security and power in the modern world.

But America has not lived by God's law and its national sins are not small.

When God decides to judge this nation, when its pre-appointed time has come and it is

over, that fall will be conclusive and it will be dramatic.

And it will come as a thief in the night.

And we should not forget that.

That is a lesson for us to look at look at how quickly cities like Nineveh fell, and

how when God decided the time was over, it was over, and it was forgotten.

There's a stanza from a poem that makes this point quite well.

It's a poem by the Englishman Rudyard Kipling.

Kipling wrote when Great Britain was a world empire.

He wrote a poem called "Requiem".

And there's one stanza that applies to the topic.

The poem says, "Far-called our navies melt away," and he's speaking of the British

Empire.

Their navies went far and eventually they did melt away.

He goes on to say, "On dune and headlands sinks the fire.

Lo, all our pomp of yesterday is one with Nineveh and Tyre."

Kipling was writing at a time when some could see that the empire of Great Britain was beginning

its decline.

And he says, "Our pomp of yesterday is like that of Nineveh and Tyre."

Well, we've read about Nineveh today.

And even a poet of Great Britain understood how transitory national greatness and power

is.

And he says in conclusion here, almost to God, "Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,

lest we forget, Lest we forget."

We don't need to forget.

And we should not forget that God is the God of history.

God is the judge of all nations.

God judged Nineveh, the Assyrians, and every other great world power after that.

And He judges and rules in history today, and His purpose still stands.

No matter what we see in today's world, understand that it all could change quickly,

"like a thief in the night" when God begins to move in world affairs to fulfill prophecy

and His divine plan.

So what should you do?

Well let's see what God says.

The apostle Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians about the sudden changes that take place when

God intervenes in world history.

He says, "But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I

should write to you" (1 Thessalonians 5:1).

Now this phrase, "times and seasons" refer to events that mark key events in the plan

of God.

Earlier in this book, Paul was talking about the resurrection to occur at Christ's appearing.

Now he's talking about a specific event.

Notice.

"For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in

the night.

For when they say, 'Peace and safety!' then sudden destruction comes upon them, as

labor pains upon a pregnant woman.

And they shall not escape" (1 Thessalonians 5:2-3).

The Day of the Lord marks a time when God intervenes in the world as mankind faces critical

challenges at the end of the age.

The day of the Lord will be a period unlike any ever seen in past history.

"But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a

thief.

You are all sons of light and sons of the day.

We are not of the night nor of darkness."

(1 Thessalonians 5:4-5).

What he is saying is this, that with a proper understanding of Bible prophecy and contact

with God, you don't have to be deceived over what is occurring.

Paul goes on, "Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night" (1 Thessalonians

5:6-7).

You and I, we can all understand the meaning of world events.

When you know that God works in history and nothing escapes His attention, you'll not

be ignorant of what is taking place.

Paul continues, "But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of

faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation" (1 Thessalonians 5:8).

History has a purpose within the plan of God.

God's intent is spiritual salvation for mankind.

And that is the hope to look for at the end of the age.

Paul goes on, "For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through

our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together

with Him.

Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing."

(1 Thessalonians 9:11).

In a moment, we will have our Beyond Today panel here to discuss more about this topic.

We have been discussing how quickly nations can fall.

Small, seemingly insignificant events can trigger large shifts in power among nations

and overnight empires and powers disappear.

The Bible describes this type of event.

So I am joined today by Steve Myers and Gary Petty for this discussion.

What does the term "a thief in the night" mean for the today's world order?

[Steve] I think when you think about it, it points to an uncertainty in our world.

That the little guy can suddenly be most important when they wield their weapons and whether

it's chemical weapons or the potential dirty bombs or nuclear weapons.

Things can change in an instant.

And like a thief that comes in and breaks in, it could happen overnight.

[Gary] Yet people say, well how could it be a thief in the night?

We know all this information.

All we have to do is pick up our newspaper or go to the Druge Report, but the truth is

we've been inundated with so much information, we become desensitized to it.

So we don't even recognize that we sort of know, we are filled with anxiety but we

are still caught off guard when the events happen.

[Darris] But what does that mean for America you think?

[Steve] For America?

I can't help but think back to World War II.

You think about Peral Harbor, that changed everything!

It changed the whole focus of the war.

And we were trying to avoid that certain section of the world and all of a sudden, there it

was and overnight we were in it full bore.

And so, like a Pearl Harbor, it means for America, we have to be weary and things could

change instantly.

[Gary] And you know what's even more amazing today, is it took the Japanese military and

industrial power to do that.

Today, a man with a dirty bomb and a suitcase could bring down the world to hitting a financial

center or something.

So it can happen so differently today.

And that would really be a thief in the night, the first events.

[Darris] But if it did happen to America, what do you think the response would be from

this country?

[Steve] Boy, I guess the scenarios play out that we're always going to retaliate.

That we've talked about mutually assured destruction.

If one is launched, we are going to launch back.

We are going to retaliate.

The world could be in an uproar and...

[Darris] But would people be able to respond effectively to it?

[Steve] That's the challenge.

I think the challenge is what would we do?

We could hardly respond to a financial crisis a number of years ago, let alone warfare that

is just blatant.

[Gary] Even if we did respond, say North Korea hit Honolulu with a nuclear weapon and we

launch a couple weapons and kill almost everybody in North Korea.

It still creates an economic chaos that just the whole world is sucked down into a pit.

So, even our response wouldn't change what is going to happen to the world.

[Darris] So what should a viewer take from that statement "a thief in the night"?

What should it mean for our audience, individually?

[Steve] Yeah.

In some sense, you've got to recognize—boy, this world is on the verge.

But yet, it doesn't have to be a thief for us, personally.

It means we've got to get our religious life in order.

We've got to develop a relationship with God.

We've got to put that first and foremost in the importance of our relationship with

Him.

And learn about God's way and His will.

[Gary] Be right with God!

You can't prepare physically for this—be right with God.

[Darris] It's a scary thought, but an important warning from the Bible.

Chocolate industry makes pact to improve conditions - Duration: 2:46.

Brown gold. Cocoa is becoming more and more valuable.

But Indonesian farmers do not know how sought after their product is.

Here, 1.5 million farmers plant cocoa beans,

often on family plantations that are not very efficient.

To secure the supply of cocoa for the 120 billion-franc industry,

chocolate producers are now joining forces.

Sustainable supply will not happen

if we don't have sustainable agricultural practices.

And sustainable agriculture cannot happen unless farmers run profitable farms.

We don't do this for charity. We are doing business.

These farmers are our business interests.

Rahmat has been farming cocoa for 30 years.

With the programme, he has tripled productivity per hectare

and improved his quality of life.

60,000 cocoa farmers regularly take part in training courses.

This helps them increase productivity and quality

and make more money.

The profile of each farmer is recorded using GPS satellite navigation.

By making their production traceable,

Nestle pays the farmers extra.

Consumers want to know where the cocoa comes from.

Reports on exploitation of children on African plantations

and rapid deforestation have scared consumers.

If we manage to double productivity,

the pressure to expand the plantations will decrease.

Environmental protection is a sensitive issue for Nestle.

In 2010, Greenpeace revealed

that Nestle had bought palm oil from a supplier

that practised massive deforestation.

Nestle has promised to implement a zero deforestation strategy by 2020.

Several chocolate manufacturers have been courting the farmers.

These include Barry Callebaut,

the leading Swiss supplier of cocoa and producer of chocolate production,

which wants to make cocoa plants more productive.

Like Nestle, Barry Callebaut is part of the Swisscontact programme.

The shortage of cocoa has united the industry.

As a result, the firms increasingly pool together

and become active on issues

which were normally tackled by NGOs.

It is in the interest of the industry to support the farmers.

Higher productivity leads to an increase in income,

which makes the cocoa market attractive for future generations.
