this video is a buyer's guide in review of the aimpoint pro now the first and
most relevant question here is why even watch this video the Internet is flooded
with YouTube reviews about this optic what I can say for you is I've viewed a
lot of those videos as well and most of them all rave reviews that will just
simply tell you how awesome the product is now this buyer's guide is going to be a
bit different we're going to talk about what's awesome about the product but
we're also going to talk importantly about other considerations that are
important to think about before laying down 400 ish dollars for this product as
well as what the critical reviews talked about now it took a little bit of
digging to get a full perspective but this is what this video contains and
this is what's coming up next on spadezilla okay let's we kick
things off with a little bit of context where does the aimpoint Pro even belong
in the market long story short if you don't want to pony up and pay 800
dollars for the military model then the Aimpoint Pro is your next best bet now
ai point by themselves describes it as being their more budget-friendly option
it includes the mount in the box as well as a pair of lens caps and It's very
much geared up to be attractive for law enforcement departments but obviously
it's going to appeal to a lot of other users as well what we're going to talk
about next is what the positive reviews highlight about the optic and these are
the key reasons why you would want to consider buying the Aimpoint pro as
mentioned previously we're then going to move on to things to consider and what
the critical reviews highlight so as to give you a hopefully well-rounded
perspective about the optic so that you can make an informed decision now the
positive reviews now there's a lot of positive stuff to say in fact we've got
a lot of information here that we've got to get through so I'm going to try and
keep this moving quickly and not dwell on any point to too long first up the
first key point is the fact that the aimpoints have
a ridiculously good reputation for ruggedness and reliability
the military's used them they've been around for a while now people describe
it as being built like a tank there's you know all sorts of videos out there
that you know surviving all sorts of ridiculous abuse suffice to say if you
want an optic that you're going to use as a working optic on a working rifle
and you want to have just that really high confidence level that it is going
to function under adverse conditions that you're not going to have to baby it
or any of these sorts of things this is the first key point as to why you would
consider this optic if you want that confidence and you want that reputation
and you don't mind paying for it that's the first key point
the other interesting thing I'll add is even in the critical reviews no one
seems to seriously debate its reputation so it's almost like it's an established
fact so that's the first thing number two
the manufacturer specifies that it has a 30,000 hour battery life a setting
number seven out of ten which most people describe as being three years
it's actually a little bit over three years nonetheless this is a very
attractive proposition once again for people who want to use this on a working
rifle and see this optic as a tool you just turn it on leave it turned on you
know it's ready when you need it very attractive selling proposition I
probably don't need to say anything more on that topic
the third key selling point that comes up over and over again and the positive
reviews people just love it the fact that this is a simple optic and they
don't mean this in a critical way they this is in regards to the whole KISS
principle keep it simple stupid people like the fact there's no switches no
levers no buttons to mess around with you just put the battery in turn it on
and forget about it it's all just once again going back to the concept that
this is a tool on a working rifle you don't want all the fancy features all
the multicolored dots and all these other things that
some other optics have if you just want it simple and functional and practical
you know the aimpoint Pro you know this is where it's at and yeah
enough said number for people to see the pro version as being a good value
offering especially as mentioned with the amount and a lens cap in the box I
got to say once again it is still a expensive optic compared to other red
dots but once again if you're making the comparison to the military offering or
the military model then people do perceive this as being a value
proposition in regards to the mount that's included in the box
people are very impressed with this even positive reviews what it is not the best
mount on the market and if you want to you know step things up there are plenty
of choices out there however the vast majority of users are very happy with
the included mount especially the fact that it has this torque limiting knob
which completely eliminates any worry about over tightening the optic when
you're mounting it to the Picatinny rail so this is very popular because when
you're mounting it you know you're always going to get the perfect
torque level without worrying about stripping anything out let's we move on
because there's plenty more to talk about number five the fact that it has a
two MOA dot is a very popular choice number six the fact that it is night
vision compatible number seven easy to see in the Sun no one really disputes
this you know it's plenty bright enough number eight the fact that it has
tethers for the adjustment caps and when I say that I mean the windage and
elevation adjustment caps and also is a battery cap now just on this topic I
just will plant one seed of warning there were a few reviewers who said that
in the picture that had the tether attaching to the battery cap as well as
the adjustment caps but the model they received only had the tethers going to
the adjustment caps so if this is important for you you might want to send
a communication or make a phone call to your chosen retailer before making the
purchase because it does seem in some cases the pictures and the product in
the box very slightly but nonetheless the fact that there are tethers and you
don't have to worry about the caps is popular number nine there are plenty of
accessories for the topic it is the name point the industry standard you're just
spoiled for choice if you want another mount if you want to change the caps if
you want to kill flash anything like this you know there's options of plenty
out there for it and in summing up all these positive reviews the key point
well it's not the key point but it is kind of summing up all these different
features people feel that this optic is pretty much the perfect tool for close
quarters battle type rifle carbine configurations or any shtf type
situation it's simple it's functional it's practical it works you can have
confidence in it and if that's what you're looking for that's the big
attraction for this optic let's we now move on to things to consider now I may
have touched on before things to consider are not necessarily positives
or negatives but just things that I'd like you to think about before you lay
down your hard-earned cash and make the purchase the first thing to think about
what this pro model is the battery type now it uses the the manufacturers spec
list that it uses the type to LR76 or DL1/3 battery types now from an
American perspective a lot of reviews will describe this has been a strange
battery type an oddball battery type some say it's more common in Europe
which wouldn't surprise me because aimpoints are made in that part of the
world nonetheless there were some reviewers saying that they did it took
them a little bit of time a little bit of a few different phone calls to find a
retailer who stopped the battery they want so that's the first consideration
how commonly available are these batteries where you live what price
point are they ant people describe them as being that more expensive than the
more common battery types having said all this is probably not such a big deal
as long as you can get access to them because with the
long battery life you're not going to be changing the mouth frequently and if you
buy half a dozen then you you know you're sorted for quite some time
nonetheless that is something to take into consideration because the military
model use the double-a battery which obviously is pretty much everywhere the
second consideration is the battery life now the fact that it's got the 30,000
hour specification was a massive selling point especially when this product first
came to market the consideration I just want to put out there for you is the
competition has come a long way since the pro came to market and there are
a lot of smaller and even cheaper competitors who even now offer five-year
battery lives and on that topic I'm thinking of there's a primary arms model
there's hollosun there may even be some other ones but the point is the
markets moved technology has moved competitors as a you know doing what
competitors do and while the 30,000 hours is still thirty thousand hours and
it's still in a very attractive selling proposition just keep in mind that it's
not so exclusive to the aimpoints now as it once was the next thing to
consider is the size and the weight of this optic now as I said oh I think I
said earlier and people describe it as having been as being built like a tank
now obviously that means it's going to be a heavier optic and it is also a
full-sized optic it's not a micro optic by any stretch of the imagination it is
intended to be a full size optic and that does come at a cost there is a
trade-off it is bigger it is bulkier it is heavy what you get for that is you
know its reputation for reliability and recognize however I just put this out
there because some people yet touched on this point I think they weren't quite
aware of how heavy and bulky it is compared to maybe some other results
that they have used I think the most people they'll be expecting it's not a
big deal but it's just something to consider the fourth thing I'd like to
put out there for you to consider is once again the market has moved since
all these aimpoint started to market and this point may or may not
be relevant for you to just think it through
obviously the aim point Pro is a non magnified optic and for many people that
is exactly what they want they want simple they just want a simple dot
that's not magnified however the thing I want to say is it used to be that
variable powered optics such as 1 to 4 power 1 to 6 power with an illuminated
dot were really expensive however as time has moved on you know competitors
doing or competitors do you can now get a variable power topic in the 1 to 4, 1 to 6
range at prices not greatly different to what the aimpoint pro is coming to
market at so I just put that out there because a variable power object gives
you a lot more you know options for different shooting at different ranges
precision shooting these sorts of things I mean yes it does get away from the
whole simple concept and maybe they don't have the same reputation for a
robustness etc etc nonetheless I just put that over to you for consideration
because when the aimpoint Pro first came to market there was a significantly
bigger gap in the price point of the aimpoint Pro and these you know good
quality variable optics that variation now has shrunk considerably and there's
not so many dollars in it anymore so just give that some thought as to
whether perhaps a variable powered optic may suit your needs better perhaps maybe
not and that's it on that let's we move on now that was number four so the first
thing to consider is the aimpoint Pro has a 10 year warranty for personal use
by comparison a lot of competitors now are offering lifetime warranties so you
know this may or may not be significant for you but it is something to take into
consideration and lastly like all red dots just keep in mind that if you have
astigmatism it's going to be a problem now this is not unique to the aimpoint
it's across the board all red dot if you have let's we talk about what
the critical review highlights the first in regards to price now there's a world
of difference between how the positive reviewers describe the price and the
critical reviewers now obviously the price is the price however whereas
positive reviewers will acknowledge that this is an expensive optic they will
tend to say but it is worth it only cry once the sort of them feedback whereas
some of the critical reviewers will describe the endpoint Pro as being
overpriced and here's the rationale that they you know back up the comment with
and I'm just going to put it to you and leave it to your judgment as to whether
you believe there's any truth in this or not the people who say that it is
overpriced to paraphrase them by saying look the product is getting a bit long
in the tooth and there's a lot little competition on the market in the market
now some say there are better options out there for only a little bit more
money and that there are comparable options out there for a lot less money
one reviewer felt that and I'm going to quote him he said that he felt that aimpoint
has become the fat cat cruising along on their military reputation
selling people old tech at a bad price so once again I'm passing that on to you
that is the impression of some people that they feel this particular product
is overpriced based on its reputation as opposed to what you're actually getting
so over to you you make your own judgment call on that the second point
that comes up in the critical reviews and even in the positive reviews and
thing is this big knob on the side of the included mount now as much as people
like the fact that the design is such that it prevents over-torquing it does
stick out a lot catches on things and some people find this an irritant and
they wish it wasn't quite so big and didn't stick out so far some reviewers
even noted that they thought for left-handed shooters this would be an
even bigger issue because it's sticking out on the left hand side of the rifle
so once again I bring that to your attention you need to make a judgment
call as to whether it's going to be an irritant for you or not there are plenty
of aftermarket mounts that you can invest in if you you know want to avoid
this issue but you just of course have to factor in the extra cost for doing so
or for buying one of those mounts moving on the third thing that comes up in the
critical reviews is in regards to the brightness settings now there are ten
brightness settings for which the night vision now the first thing I can say is
a lot of people who buy the optic don't realize this and they say oh the first
you know four or five settings I can't even see only the you know last five are
actually useful in daylight yes I mean if they knew that the first
of all where the nighttime that sir might have saved some aggravation to
some users but the point here is that out of the ten settings unless you're a
night vision user which I think is the minority of users in total you
practically have six daylight settings to choose from which may be adequate for
what you want to do but there is some critical feedback in regards to this and
I'm just going to quote or paraphrase a few different reviews to try and convey
the message to you and once again as with all you know critical feedback that
I've picked up on I'm just going to pass it on to you you make your own judgment
call it's just important to me that I've passed it on to you to give you the full
picture etc okay the first thing in regards to brightness settings one
critical reviewers saying the top two settings produce so much glare that they
are almost useless under normal conditions another reviewer
said you have to turn it to the six or seven position to be able to see the dot
now as discussed you may not have been aware that the first four we're night
vision only otherwise it's too dim and hard to find
another critical reviewer on the higher level about the last two settings the
dot seems to have some distortion that makes the dot appear larger than two
MOA now there's quite a few people talking about this with the dot
appearing larger at the higher settings I'm going to quote one more and then
we'll move on one person said is the only issue with the the sight was that
it's been marketed as a 2 MOA dot and he said indoors and at night the seven
setting is OK however outdoor the seven setting cannot be seen on a mostly sunny
day be prepared to have a 4 or even 6 MOA dot on the 8th or 9th setting to
shoot in full daylight when there's snow on the ground you'll probably be using
setting number 9 or 10 so take that for what it's worth there was quite a few
people saying similar things and different words these four quotes are
just to try and convey the general idea to you that in practical terms you have
six settings to choose from and quite a few people are saying at the highest
settings there is some distortion some glare some halo effect and that the dot
is significantly bigger than 2 MOA I'll leave that with you for you know to
consider lastly the fourth thing under critical reviews in the last the last
item in fact under critical review highlight some reviewers it wasn't
actually a huge number but enough that I want to pass this on to you
some critical reviewers felt that the field of view was in their words
terrible they're saying it's a narrow tube and a bulky housing now yes it is
a bulky housing and this is you know part and parcel with it you know being
built like a tank where I feel they were coming from the
people who made the sort of comments is users who had come from using variable
powered optics or who had experience using variable powered optics such as
one to four power you know one to six power that sort of thing and with those sort of
optics the glass is clearer because it's using different technology for a good
quality one and if they don't have such a big bulky housing so coming from that
spective that's how they felt they didn't like the field of view
now I know some Aimpoint fans are going to say look you're not supposed to be
looking down it with one eye closed you're supposed to be shooting both eyes open
and you're not really going to notice the housing too much and there's a lot
of truth to that but nonetheless if you're making a comparison to other
types of optic then you know that's some of the feedback that comes up in the
critical reviews so something else to consider
okay so we've now reached the conclusion of this buyer's guide and this review of the
aimpoint pro I do sincerely hope this video has been of some value to in
making the right decision for you now if you need them I'll pop the major
retailer links in the description below aside from that a thumbs up is very much
appreciated if you feel it appropriate aside from that thank you for watching
and we'll see you next time just
