Anyone for a French Dip sandwich?! I'm Tess and today I'm going to show you how

to make a beef French Dip sandwich using the slow cooker. Stay tuned.

(intro music)

I'm starting by seasoning both sides of a chuck roast with a little salt and

black pepper, placing it in a medium high heat pan with a little oil.

I want to brown each side for about three to four minutes until it gets a

nice golden crust which means a lot of flavor. After it's done I'm removing from

the pan. I'm turning my heat down to a medium and in the same pan and oil I'm

adding two large sliced onions. I kept the onions a little thick because

I want them to hold up in the cooking in the slow cooker. Cooking and stirring the

onions for about 5 to 10 minutes or until they soften and start to

caramelize and turn color. Just a reminder that you'll be able to find

this recipe, the list of ingredients and much more in the show more section below.

I've also included links where you can purchase online some of the ingredients

and equipment that I use in this video recipe. If you have a chance please check

it out. Now for the sauce. I didn't have any beef

broth so I'm cheating and using some homemade chicken broth and adding some

better than bouillon beef base. If you wanted you could also substitute half of

the broth for beer to give it another depth of flavor. it's all good. I'm adding

in some soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, onion flakes, sliced garlic, Italian

seasonings and black pepper. I'm not adding any salt as the soy sauce and

bouillon base will have plenty. Giving that a good stir and setting to the side.

Now let's put this all together. In my crock pot I'm adding the onions on the

bottom, then the roast and all its good juices, and this is optional but I'm

adding in some sliced mushrooms and finally pouring the sauce all over the top.

Giving everything a good stir, placing on the lid and cooking on high

for four to five hours or on the low setting for about seven to eight hours.

It's been four hours and the house smells amazing!.. and the beef is done!

You can see the meat is falling apart. I'm taking out the roast and letting it

slightly cool for about 15 to 20 minutes. The sauce or Au Jus looks and smells

wonderful! Now I'm taking two forks and just

shredding the beef. I'm going to try and keep the beef in chunks, not too small or

shredded. I'm also removing any big chunks of fat.

Next, I'm straining and laddling the onions and mushrooms from the sauce and

placing them in with the shredded beef. Adding in a little of the sauce and

giving that a good mix. I just can't resist I have to give it a taste.

So let's make these french dip sandwiches. I have some sub rolls that I'm splitting,

buttering and lightly toasting in my cast-iron pan. Laying in some cheese on

the seam of the buns so the juices don't escape. I'm using mozzarella cheese but

you can use any cheese that you like. I also like Swiss cheese on my french dip sandwiches.

Putting in a couple good scoops of the shredded beef and don't be chintzy.

And finally placing more cheese on top. Baking at 400 degrees Fahrenheit

for 5 to 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and nice and bubbly.

And here it is! A beef French Dip sandwich served with a classic side of Au Jus and

some fresh veggies.I guess I don't have to tell you that these sandwiches were

beyond awesome. They have a good rich beef flavor and the onions add a lot of

flavor and a little sweet note. Let me cut the sandwich so you can see the inside.

Look at that! I'm going right in, giving it a little dip in the Au Jus and

taking a bite. I hope you give these beef french dip sandwiches a try and enjoy.

Magical Girl D.Va Cosplay Review - Bhiner.com - Duration: 6:55.

Hi there, guys! This is Koto and welcome to my channel!

Today's video is a review of my Magical Girl D.Va cosplay

Many girls contacted me wanting to know more of it, so I decided to make this video to show you the whole costume!

Answering the most asked question, the cosplay was sent by Bhiner!

Bhiner is a Taobao agent.

Taobao, in case you don't know, if one of the largest online shopping platforms

The bigger problem is that most of their stores don't ship to western countries aaaaand the website is written in chinese

So here's where Bhiner helps you: they can place an order for you or you do it and send the package to their warehouse

After that, they'll ship it to your home!

This is the third costume Bhiner send me

First one was Kurumi, that I also reviewed here (link is above)

Second one was Star Guardian Janna, which I reviewed as well (link above!)

And now Magical Girl D.Va, from Overwatch

This is not an official skin. It was inspired in a fanart by the artist Shourca

So, let me get started by showing you the box the cosplay came in

Everything came inside this box, kinda big

It's big 'cause it came with EVERYTHING. Costume, shoes, wig, props,...

Let me show you each piece of the costume!

Starting with the weapon

I believe it is made of EVA foam

It's really light in weight, so it's easy to carry around at cons

It came in great conditions, no damages because of transport

I believe it came intact because it was really well packaged!

The headphones and weapon came inside this package that was full of air, so they couldn't get damaged during the transport

The headphones. I think it was also made out of EVA foam. It has this tiara to keep it on your head and avoid it from falling

The wig is this one I'm wearing. It's exactly the color of D.Va's hair, this chocolate brown shade.

And this is the lenght, it reaches this far of my back

The quality is just amazing, the fiber is great and I'm in love with it!

The costume pieces came well protecter in these plastic bags

I'll show you every accessorie now!

This is one of the arm accessories.

It has this elastic to attach it better to your arm

It goes after the gloves, that I'll show you next

It has a wire inside to keep it in the right place

The gloves. This one came as a pair, but she only wears it in one hand

The other hand she shows the fingers

It's a simple white glove, pretty cute

This is the other arm accessories. Basically just like the other, but without the wire part

It goes in the same place as the other

This is the left tight accessorie. It also has an elastic to prevent it from falling and to keep it attached to your leg

This is one of the stockings

It is simple, white and stretches a lot, which is amazing since I'm tall

This is the other stocking. It's just like the previous one, but it has this cute lace, just like the character design

It also has this pink detail for you to attach the pink ribbon I'll show you next, so it won't be sliding down

This is the pink ribbon you'll attach on the stocking I just showed

It's made out of a very soft fabric, so it's great to have that attachment spots on the stocking

This is one of the gloves

It's also pretty elastic and it has these 'petal' details matching character's design

This is the other glove,

It has this white details (two layers) and it's attached to your middle finger, like this

This is the hand which she shows fingers, no white gloves

It's super long, to fit me exactly!

This is always my favorite part: BOOTS!

It's just AMAZING! It's made out of a leather-like fabric

It's closed with a zipper

And has this cute heel

If you know me, you know my fave part of any cosplay is the shoes!

I absolutely love boots and high heels for cosplay, so I was basically dying when I saw this boots for the first time <3

This is the dress. It's AMAZING

It's strapless and closes on the side with an invisible zipper

In the center we have this heart, with a silicone strap to prevent it from deforming the heart-shape

These two bows. They're attached by pins but I keep them attached 'cause it's easier to get dressed

On the back of the dress we have this big bow, also attached by a pin and I also keep it attached permanently

This blue part is attached to the main dress, so it's only one thing to put on, which makes it way easier to get ready for a con

It also has these details to attach an invisible bra strap, that also came

Here's the neck part. It has this heart on the back, and the white lace stays around your neck

It's attached with a velcro and then the bunny stays on your neck

The skirt is pink, with a little tulle inside to add volume, and then another brown skirt under it

The dress in general has a lot of volume, which is amazing for a Magical Girl cosplay!

This was it! This was my review of my Magical Girl D.Va cosplay, from Bhiner!

I'll let Bhiner's link in the description so you can take a look at their website!

The cosplays are really wonderful, the ones they sent me are my favorites and they have an AMAZING shopping service!

How To Create A Morning Routine / Ritual - 2018 - Duration: 8:09.

Hi I'm Dal Sahota of dalsahota.com and in this video I'm going to show you how

to create your perfect morning routine using seven simple steps. And make sure

you watch until the end of the video so that you can get your FREE guide and

cheat sheet on how to create a morning routine that's going to suit you and

your lifestyle.

With all the hustle and bustle of kids, work and life it can be

hard to make time for ourselves. It takes real commitment and dedication but it's

definitely worth it. Mornings can be the most magical part of

the day and forming new habits can seem daunting but the more you repeat your

habits daily, the more ingrained they become. So try not to worry about how

effective your habits are to start with, start by implementing them and watch

their quality improve over time. So start with small wins watch them grow and

become more powerful. So, let's start by setting your alarm 15 to 30

minutes earlier.

Tip number ONE... drink a glass of water.

This is going to help to

rehydrate your dehydrated body. When you wake up after a long sleep your body is

naturally dehydrated. No matter how much water you drank the day before, you have

used up your stores and it's now time to refill the tank. So, the first thing

drinking water after waking up will do is provide your cells with much-needed

hydration. It's also going to help flush out toxins,

fire up your metabolism,

fuel your brain

and it's completely refreshing.

Tip number TWO. Silence and meditation.

If you are new to meditation you can start your practice with just two minutes a

day. Yes, that's right just two minutes.

why? Because starting with a tiny habit

is the first step to consistently achieving it and following a guided

meditation is a great way to learn how to quieten the mind,

listen and relax

through the process.

Meditation is also going to help to improve your

self-awareness,

balance your emotions,

make you feel less anxious ,

you'll have better focus

and more creativity and compassion.

Tip number THREE. Affirmations

a simple morning affirmation such as "I am healthy" can go a very long way.

By affirming positive statements, it makes you aware of your daily thoughts and

words and helps keep negativity away.

You can use the following affirmations,

just to give you some ideas

"today is going to be a great day."

"good things are coming into my life every day"

I like my job

So, by doing this daily and first thing in

the morning,

you will help keep yourself surrounded by the things you want to

keep in your life and this in turn will encourage and motivate you to keep up

this powerful practice.

Tip number FOUR. Visualization

visualizing your desired dreams as already complete can rapidly accelerate

your achievement to those dreams, goals and ambitions.

I am a huge fan of vision boards

and you can look at your board each morning to mentally picture

yourself doing the work you have to do today in order to make progress.

For example,

if you want to learn how to play the guitar

imagine yourself touching the strings and placing your fingers the right way

for certain chords.

If your dream is of starting a family, imagine holding your

new baby and feeling those emotions of love,

if you dream of going on a world

trip, imagine yourself on the plane and reaching your desired destination,

this is very, very powerful and you can truly get towards your goals much quicker by

visualizing on a daily basis.

Tip number FIVE. Journaling

writing in a journal is a great way to get your thoughts out of your head and

onto paper.

Think about the lessons you've learned

and what new commitments

you plan to make for your future.

Pick small commitments and limit them to the

day, so for example, "I will drink eight more gl asses of water today"

you can also

make this your gratitude journal.

It can be very easy to forget how good you

really have it in this fast-paced world. this is why gratitude helps you stay

positive and you should definitely practice this daily.

when you think of something to be grateful for

break it down and think about the details that

you are thankful for...

so, as an example

"I am grateful for my health" you could say

that you are grateful for your eyes, which allow you to see this beautiful

world around you.

Or if you are grateful for your job

think about what aspects of it make you feel thankful for

for example, the salary that allows you to take holidays

and keep a roof over your head

if you would prefer, you can also type out your journal entries. This can

make life easier for some people who are more tech savvy.

Tip number SIX. Reading

in the morning, your mind is more concentrated, fresh and crystal clear

and this makes it a great time to read a page or a chapter from an inspirational

book. Reading on a daily basis will help to teach you new ideas and you will

learn more and more as the days go by. Like any other muscle in the body; your

brain and mindset require exercise to keep them strong and healthy.

Reading will help to keep you focused,

improve your knowledge,

your memory and

strengthen your mind-reading abilities

Tip number SEVEN. Exercise.

Your mind should now be fully active so now it's time to activate your body.

Exercise in the mornings not only energizes you and gets your blood flowing but it also

helps you feel more accomplished and good about yourself because you were

actually able to make this happen.

it will improve your heart health; giving

you great cardiovascular benefits,

it will also help to boost your brainpower

improve your focus, help keep your weight healthy and provide you with more energy

you can exercise in a number of ways

you can go to the gym you can go walking or

running outside,

you can do DVDs at home

and there are a number of apps that talk

you through some quick exercise routines that use high intensity interval

training, so check them out too.

So there you have your seven tips to help you

form a great morning routine for a successful day and life.

And remember

that consistency is the key to making the sequence of habits

work for you.

Always start small and as time passes; you will start to see all

the positive benefits of waking up early and accomplishing so much to help you

maintain a strong and healthy mindset.

So, now you know the steps required to

create your perfect morning routine and don't forget to download your free guide

TL Olleh on laning with Doublelift, his relationship w/ Cody Sun & Season 8 ambitions | NA LCS 2018 - Duration: 5:43.

welcome to the NA LCS I'm joined by Team Liquid support Ollen. Team liquid

has fielded an entire new roster 5 veterans from a whole bunch of different

places what has it been like so far with this new team in Team Liquid oh actually

like everyone knows how to play so like we didn't need to tell them how to do it

like we just need to discuss like oh maybe we should done this and maybe on

this play will be better like we didn't really point out someone's problem like

we are kind of giving feedback each other not like blaming each other so

yeah I think our team like mood is very nice like we are like okay right Wow

even though we lost all we have we learned something then I think their

attitude is the best so I think I love that you actually came over to this team

with former teammates of yours in pobelter and xmithie in the mid and

jungle respectively what's been the biggest difference between Team Liquid

and immortals is an organization that you've seen thus far

oh actually I don't feel the most difference because like I only play

League of Legends and yeah so like I cannot I couldn't be anything different

at least I could fear that like Timmy kid has lots of that resource to post I

don't know like the YouTube video like we have one of Studio and then they took

lots of videos and then like it's very nice quality so sometimes I enjoy it

those like kind of documentary or drama so yeah I think that's most big part is

it fun being on camera do you do you like to in content like that

Oh like sometimes I say something wrong and I believe they just a bit well yeah

I think yeah I love that hey we're no stranger to doing that here

either when we have to oh wait you played against Cody Sun today someone

who you're credited with kind of helping him find his play style his confidence

from being on immortals last year how is what do you think of his growth as a

player and what do you think's changed for him on heart thieves now on his new

team actually after we lost our championship

I did talk with Cody I how like how he was and then how I want him to be so

like we kind of discuss for our future but we didn't we didn't expect we gonna

be an enemy first I didn't expect unbalanced in any again so I was giving

him like oh I think this part you were your bed so I wanted to fix those

problem and yeah he was really happy to listen to my opinion and yeah he

promised that he will solve his problem so I think he did well like he had been

really doing well and I think that's how he beat us today do you guys still keep

in touch like you guys still to talk about battling strategies or anything

like that or is it different since you guys are on different teams now Oh

actually we cannot exchange our strategy I'm plan so but we only talk about how

how is being like how are you like so like even today before mesh we talk like

for like tammini likes just some more stuff like oh your team environment is

good or are you happy now adays like yeah we just just catching up basically

yeah well that's really cool you're now in the bot lane with double

lift which people found very interesting given his lane dominant playstyle and

you've always been known for your big rooms and your big play making what's it

like playing with double lift in the bot lane so far this year um I think Peter

knows lots of stuff to communicate because I didn't my English is not

perfect in gaming so like he has been helping me like how to call how to

communicate how to tell the information to our teammates so um I have been

learning so I think like are we are we better

are we better English speaker with him yeah well your English is already pretty

good so it's really great that you're improving though in-game with your

communication Olli this is the most talented roster team liquid to put

together on paper I think that's indisputable here but

we've seen them put rosters together before and it hasn't worked out the way

the fans have wanted why is this year different last year for I am

he lost to TSM in the final so like me and Jake I'm Eugene it's just one win it

SES really seriously and w2 already got champion last year but he want to prove

himself to were championship and impact also like he D we're on our championship

but he say he didn't do well in any areas so but everyone has their goal and

then passion so that's yeah that's how we work well we certainly look forward

to seeing you guys continue to do that oleh thank you so much for the interview

is there anything you'd like to say to the TL fanbase out there um now like

Timmy kid yeah today we lost it feels bad but I believe our team we always

come back and like today we lost and yeah our conversation was like oh we

learned something and yeah we just play played next time better and would be

much better don't worry guys so yeah I think you guys don't need to be really

worried because one lose so yeah thank you

SMOKED HOMEMADE CHICKEN WINGS || CHICKEN WINGS WITH THE MINT DIP (SUPERBOWL 2018) || CHICKEN WINGS - Duration: 10:34.

hi friends today I'm going to show you a super delicious quick and easy chicken

wings recipe I have added the twist by adding the smoked flavor to them they

are very easy to make with minimal ingredients I have also made this mint

dip to go with the chicken wings these are really yummy and very delicious

let's look at the ingredients

I have taken here about fifteen or sixteen chicken wings and I have removed

the skin from each of these so they looked like these

half cup of chopped mint leaves half cup of chopped coriander leaves two

teaspoons of red chili and garlic paste you can use any brand I have used this

one one teaspoon of black pepper salt to taste 1 TSP of turmeric 3 teaspoons of

cumin and coriander powder 3 teaspoons of ginger-garlic paste the piece that I

have made I made it a little thicker not exactly a paste

two to three teaspoons of lemon juice and about 1/4 cup of rice flour the

first thing we are gonna do is take a wide plate and marinate our chicken

wings so start off by adding our fresh herbs add the coriander

mint leaves

red chilli garlic paste black pepper

cumin and coriander powder turmeric ginger garlic thick paste lemon juice

and salt to taste now remove all your finger rings and get your hands dirty

and mix all the ingredients really well in the chicken wings marinate them well

and cover them and keep them aside for half an hour or so once chicken marinate

let's make our mint dip we need chopped mint chopped coriander and a small piece

of ginger salt to taste

two tablespoons of ricotta cheese

two tablespoons of whole milk yogurt you can use any brand this is the one that I

have used all we have to do is take all the ingredients and put them in a

grinder so I had one by one and give enough space for the to mix well in the

grinder look at that lovely green color that has come to our main tip now let's

take it out in a serving bowl

the min tape is now ready you can garnish it with some coriander leaves

now the chicken has marinated well for the past hour or so I'm going to take

off the lid and start sprinkling the rice flour on one side and similarly do

it on the other side this is to give our bangs a nice crispy flavor you don't

want to add too much just enough to coat them well toss the chicken wings with

the rice flour just like this

chicken wings are ready now to be fried let's take a nonstick pan and put it on

a medium-high flame add about four to five teaspoons of oil spread the oil

across now start adding the chicken wings to the pan just add enough that it

will give you space to move around don't add too much now give them a little toss

and cover them and cook it on one side for about five to seven minutes after

about seven minutes or so we are going to turn each of the wings and also cook

it on the other side

careful while turning them you don't want to remove any of their marinade or

the covering so do it carefully

now cover and let it cook on the other side as well for about five to seven

minutes after about seven minutes or so turn them on the other side the side on

which it's not cooked or has not touched the pan again do it carefully use a

spoon or a fork if you need to just like I'm doing it after about two to three

minutes turn the chicken wings to the side that has not touched the pan and

let them cook on that side for a few minutes again

now cover them and let it cook for about two to three minutes after about three

minutes or so the chicken wings are almost ready toss them around are the

sides that you feel need to be cooked a little bit but you don't need to cover

it anymore just turn around the wings that need to

be changed and then your chicken wings are pretty much ready if you like you

can also add some food color to them to look them like really red but I have

kept them natural now the chicken wings are ready this is our first batch so

take them out in a plate now let's go ahead and cook our second batch

similarly take out the remaining cooked material had two teaspoons of oil and

fry our second batch

you're gonna follow the same process that we did for the first batch so turn

it toss it and cook them let's check our meat you see that the meat falls off

easily let's check one more piece just to make sure and you notice that this

one to the meat comes off easily now what I'm doing is to impart that smoky

flavor to the wings I am taking a charcoal and burning it on the flame so

takes about 4 to 5 minutes and they will turn really red and hard go ahead and

switch off the flame the charcoal is ready now our second batch is also well

cooked go ahead and add the wings from the first batch to the pan make some

space in the middle and switch off the flame what we're gonna do now is take

that hot charcoal put it in the middle and add a teaspoon of coconut oil to it

you can add any fat I have taken coconut oil cover it immediately you want to

make sure that all those smoky flavors transfer to our chicken rings let it sit

for about change of in it 15 minutes just like that I cannot wait to eat

those chicken rings mmm now open and check you will feel the flavors in the

whole room now go ahead and take out that charcoal carefully

our chicken wings are now ready serve them hard they look so yummy and super

tempting take a small bowl and serve the main tip

try out this recipe on the coming Super Bowl Sunday I'm very sure your friends

and family will love it let's not wait any more

dig in if you've liked today's recipe please don't forget to Like subscribe

Chicken-mu (Pickled radish: 치킨무) - Duration: 8:09.

(knife chopping)

(upbeat music)

- Hi, everybody.

Today, we are going to make some special side dish.

Very easy and simple.

This is side dish for Korean chicken,

Korean fired chicken, yangnyeom-tongdak, dakgangjeong,

or with Korean roasted chicken.

So, we call this even chicken mu.

Mu is a radish in Korean.

So, chicken mu, or pickled radish, or mu pickle,

this side dish is never served as a side dish for rice.

It's only served with the chicken.

This pickled radish is so easy that I thought

that I don't have to make this into a recipe video,

but I met a couple of my readers,

They really have requested this recipe.

"Maangchi, I go to a Korean chicken place,

and they serve this white cubed radish.

It's like sweet and sour. Can you upload the video?"

So, I decide to make it.

First, we have to find the real good quality radish.

Sometimes, radish is not good,

and I just give up making because the radish

should be really juicy, firm, sweet, and crispy.

Usually, the peak time for radish is late fall,

but sometimes you can find really good quality radish,

even though it's not its peak time.

The other day, I went to a Korean market,

I found really, really nice, beautiful, gorgeous radish!

Here you go.

I love all of these three radishes.

You see the green part? More green part than white part,

that means sweet, and also it should be really firm.

When you just press it just a little bit,

it should be firm, and the skin is shiny, and smooth.

This is a real Korean radish, and nice, good-looking radish.

Sometimes, really, plump one like this.

Oh, by the way, if Korean radish is not available,

use daikon, you know, daikon is also good.

Very fresh, and very tender,

but Korean radish is more sweet.

Sometimes, it's very cute, like this!

a really small size, less than one pound.

This is, I think, more than four pounds, it's really heavy.

I would choose this guy

because it's very handsome and good-looking.

First, I cut off the top. (knife chopping)

And then, around one pound. Maybe this-- this amount.

(crunching knife chopping)

I'm going to make it with one pound.

So, one pound of radish.

One pound and three ounces.

I'm going to peel off the skin,

so probably it will be one pound exactly.

(metal clanking)

Good tip for you! Don't throw away,

this radish skin is very clean

because I washed it. Just add to your stock,

to make it sweet.

I'll just put it here, later I will use. Now we have one pound of radish.

Then, I'll just cut it into cubes.

Before cutting, I'll just make brine.

1/3 cup sugar.

This is white vinegar,

1/3 cup (liquid sloshing)

plus 1 tablespoon of vinegar.

So, this is sweet and sour, we needed some salt.

1 tablespoon salt.

Just mix together.

Water, I'll add 3/4 cup.

Half a cup plus quarter cup.

This is sweet, sour, and a little salty brine.

And mix well until all are well dissolved.

And then, let's cut. Around 1/3 inch,

between 1/3 inch to 1/4 inch

Cubed radish: pickled radish

should be very small.

Sometimes, I see big chunks. It's not tasty.

Big chunks are for kkakdugi, kkakdugi, radish kimchi.

But, for this one, it should be really small-sized pices.

So that they easily absorb the brine.

(knife chopping)

Cubed!

(knife chopping)

I'll make these 2.

(knife chopping)

So, this is 1 pound of radish, all cubed.

When you go to a Korean fried chicken place,

you have to order separately. Sometimes it's very expensive.

for just a small bowl,

you know, more than 3 dollars. Expensive!

And then, (sloshing noise) mix all together.

You can put it in air-tight container, close the lid,

and refrigerate it . Around 12 hours later,

it will be more delicious because all are pickled and

the brine is absorbed, but you can start eating

just in a couple of hours. That's what I'm doing.

But, it has to be really, really cold and refreshing.

If this is not cold, not tasty, isn't it?

(cheerful music)

To eat this pickled radish,

I'm making dakgangjeong, Korean fried chicken.

(sizzling noise)

(cheerful music)

Today's recipe is mu pickle, radish pickle,

but I made this dakgangjeong,

Korean fried chicken, and I wanna show you

how you guys can enjoy dakgangjeong more than before,

with this radish pickle.

And also I like to have this with my coke.

Chicken, coke, high calories, but I don't care,

because this is delicious. Once in a while it's okay, isn't it?

(crunching noise)

Mmm. Mmm! (chewing noise)

(slurping noise)

Wow, so cold and good! Radish pickle, let's eat.

(crunching noise)

After one bite of chicken, then radish pickle,

it will make you really feel refreshing,

because sweet and sour with a really crispy texture,

they really go well together.

Whoever invented this radish pickle,

he or she must be so genius.

On and on I keep, keep eating.

Today, we made radish pickle,

it's always served with Korean fried chicken,

or roasted chicken.

By the way, my next recipe video

will be roasted chicken, which has a longer history

than this kind of Korean fried chicken.

Enjoy my recipe, see you next time! Bye!

Black Minds Matter: A Focus on Black Boys and Men in Education - Duration: 5:35.

Ben: Hello Ashford, my name is Ben Gothia, and this is Promoting Awareness and Wellness

in Students.

For the past few months, many Ashford staff and faculty have taken advantage of access

to an online course titled, "Black Minds Matter."

This February, in honor of Black History Month, the PAWs team caught up with one of the community

members who coordinated this opportunity to ask him about the course, his takeaways, and

how students and staff can access this learning opportunity.

Welcome to PAWs.

Ben: As a key coordinator in Ashford's role as a streaming site, Dr. Justin Harrison,

the Dean of the Division of General Education, shares how Ashford was able to host this learning

opportunity.

Dr. Harrison: The Black Minds Matter course was a course that is provided by San Diego

State University.

I found out that they were looking for streaming institutions.

So I indicated that we wanted to be a streaming institution.

Essentially, we met during the same time period that they were meeting on San Diego State's

campus.

We ran our own session; we would view the lecture component, the interviews, and then

we had an hour long discussion time period.

We invited people to join through Adobe Connect, online, as well.

Ben: Recognizing that many have not had a chance to participate, Dr. Harrison offers

some detail about the course curriculum.

Dr. Harrison: The course is about educating black men and boys.

Initially it was kind of provocative and it got some negative feedback because of the

focus, but really, it was just the researchers and the people that were being interviewed;

that was their specialty.

They were interviewing multiple leaders in the field of black male education, but also,

they had the founder of the Black Lives Matter movement and they interviewed other black

leaders like Malcolm X's daughter, and other people affiliated with promoting the interests

of African American and black culture and people.

The course was primarily a mixture of everything; what are the best techniques for engaging

these populations?

How can we support this group?

How can we connect?

Just empower the group rather than have this mentality that black men and boys are criminals

or that they are not as intelligent.

That was the foundation of the course.

Ben: Discussion being such a critical part of the learning process, Dr. Harrison shared

a few of his takeaways and a bit about the discussions throughout the course.

Dr. Harrison: One thing that came up regularly throughout the course is inherent bias and

how all humans are biased.

One thing that I thought a lot about, I studied critical thinking and this is a huge part

of critical thinking as well, but just thinking about how our biases affect our perception

of other people; especially people that are not like us.

One thing that they regularly said was that all humans are biased, but that doesn't

make you a bad human, it just makes you human.

The key is understanding your own bias and actively trying to combat your bias, so you

can be objective and provide the most respect and justice in all of your actions with students

and with other people in general.

Another thing that I really got out of it is that all students want caring teachers.

All students want to be affirmed.

Often what happens with black boys and throughout their entire educational experience is that

they are in a certain sense criminalized or behavioralized; they get these markers placed

on them.

Really, what you have is a boy who wants to be affirmed; who wants to know that they are

good at math, or good at reading, or good at English.

They don't get that affirmation.

They don't get it from their teachers.

So, one liberating and empowering thing that we can all do is treat our students in a caring

fashion.

Promoting their learning, complimenting them when they do a good job, pushing them further

than they thought they could go, and just being there for them in their time of need.

Ben: With the development of a second course underway, Dr. Harrison closes with some information

on how you can access the course in your own time.

Dr. Harrison: The course itself has its own website.

If you get on YouTube, and you just look for Black Minds Matter, there are all the interviews

that they did, and the introductory lecture components are also there, so you can access

those.

The discussions were not open and they were not recorded; that was purposeful so that

people could be honest and not feel like things that they said could be held against them,

which is totally understandable.

That's the way to access the course materials that we have gone through together.

As I mentioned, they will be doing this again, Black Minds Matter, but with a focus on black

girls and women.

We will let everyone know when that is going to occur.

I'm hoping again that Ashford can be a streaming site for that course and that we can engage

with the lecture component and then have these discussions and hopefully let these discussions

influence our own environment and context.
