Hey Julian, you were able to watch the game at home.
We put in the work for you so that you'll be there for the next round.
Enjoy the Matchday Magazine!
Tailwind - the black and yellows aim to stay unbeaten for the 9th game in a row.
Wanting more - the last-16 draw has been made: a tie against Red Bull Salzburg is up next.
Overview - our midfield dynamo is today's guest on the Matchday Magazine.
Hello and welcome to BVB Total!
The lads are back in action tomorrow against FC Augsburg.
We've won each of the last meetings between the sides,
and of course we want to continue this winning run.
We at BVB Total! will be providing you with all the build up to the game.
Things are going well for Borussia Dortmund in 2018:
they have taken points from every league game so far,
are back up to second place in the table,
and are through to the next round in the Europa League.
Next up is FC Augsburg.
The first league meeting was decided by two wonder goals.
The team will go into this fixture confident
of creating plenty more joyful moments for the black and yellows.
And my guest today will most probably be taking part:
Julian Weigl, we're very pleased to have you here with us.
It's great that you found the time to do this for us.
You kind of get the feeling that things are going well in 2018.
Things are going better - what do you attribute that to?
It's difficult to say - the results are great, that's true,
and that was missing for a while at the end of last year.
I think it does everyone good to be back in second place,
that we are above the Blues, if I can put it that way.
But we know that we still have plenty of room for improvement,
and we still aren't playing the sort of football that we'd like to.
But the most important thing is the points, to put it simply.
And as such it was important that we put together a little run.
And now Augsburg are next - the first meeting was a particularly tight game.
What will you need to be ready for, do you think? How will the lads set up tactically?
Yeah - Augsburg have surprised me a lot this year, I have to say.
They've lost a few games recently, but up until now they've had a steady season.
They like to play football under their new coach,
It was always a bit of a battle against Augsburg, as they were often in a relegation fight.
I think that it's right that they're not down in the mire this season,
so it will be important for us to take the initiative, being at home.
We just need to play our football and put on a good performance for the fans,
and of course win the game, that's the main thing - as I mentioned previously.
We will analyse it closely, but it is never easy to play against Augsburg.
They will give everything, as it's always a great occasion for them to play here.
And of course they want to take something away with them.
As such it'll be difficult for us, with little space on the pitch. But we'll find solutions, I'm sure.
I'm crossing my fingers.
We now come to a game that is perfect for you - Question Time.
Five short questions and five short answers.
How did you feel when you scored your first Bundesliga goal?
It was indescribable.
And when will you score your next goal?
Tomorrow! Hopefully!
Of course, it's not all about scoring goals - what's your biggest strength?
Passing.
Why will we qualify for the Champions League this season?
We will qualify because we will have earnt it.
This summer, you will…
Hopefully be at the World Cup.
Ah, very good!
Before the summer, there will hopefully be plenty of Europa League as well as Bundesliga matches.
We managed to get past Atalanta in the Europa League,
and Julian and Manuel Akanji watched together.
How did you two find the match?
It was a very difficult match...
That's a nice way of putting it!
Yeah, it certainly wasn't our best performance, it wasn't easy there.
I wasn't there, but you could see that their fans generated a great atmosphere.
It was quite something for them to see their team playing in an international competition.
And you could feel that.
Sure, we conceded an early goal, which didn't play into our hands.
But the most important thing is that we are through,
and we threw everything forward and gave everything.
And fortunately Schmelzer got us the goal.
Our goalgetter!
Like me, he is someone who doesn't score that many goals,
but I was really pleased to see him back on the scoresheet following his long injury.
We'll now take a look back at the crucial goal from Thursday's match,
and look forward to the next challenge that awaits us.
The 83rd minute in Reggio-Emilia -
pure ecstasy,
on the pitch, in the stands and on social media.
Marcel Schmelzer scores with his right foot,
something he last achieved 2,316 days ago!
It fired the team into the last-16 of the Europa League.
BVB will meet Red Bull Salzburg in the next round, and the omens are good:
BVB have won each of the last 4 competitive fixtures against teams from Austria.
So Julian - Schmelzer with his right foot!
What was your first thought?
First of all, Akanji and I shouted out and were really pleased.
It was a very important goal, of course.
Seeing Schmelzer celebrating was an unusual sight,
but as I said, it was even better because of his injury and the setbacks he has had.
I think he really deserved it. And for us it was a really important goal.
Next up are Salzburg - what do you know about the team?
Do you know the team? Are you looking forward to the game?
I know little about the team, in terms of games and goals.
I haven't seen much of them yet.
I know the club, of course. It's not so far away from where I come from originally.
Your parents could walk there, I reckon?!
Exactly, they'll definitely come down.
I have actually played in the stadium before with Rosenheim, back in the day.
My team played against the U15s in the stadium, when it was still an artificial pitch.
I don't think it's like that anymore, but I know the stadium a little already.
I think it's a good draw.
It could have been worse, or at least colder!
Certainly colder! But yeah, who knows?
It is often pretty cold in Austria, too.
Trips to Spain, England, Cyprus, Italy and now Austria.
Does it really matter where you go?
Yeah, certainly.
We hoped to avoid a huge tie in the last-16,
but any opponent deserves to be there so must be taken seriously.
For me, apart from not wanting the three big clubs left, it was fine.
We are of course looking forward to the journey to Austria.
And now we come to the segment "Tell Me Something".
Last time it featured a question from Roman Bürki about Instagram,
and this time we take a closer look.
Julian has posted something.
So, first of all Julian, what sort of shooting technique is that?!
You have to explain it.
Marco Reus scored a goal last week with this technique. What is it?
We call it the knuckleball, when the ball dips like that.
I think Marco is the specialist there.
How… do you approach the ball?
I run up very straight and hit the ball with my entire instep.
I make it go up - I don't know really.
I have also played - do you get obsessed with it?
Yeah, you do. But it's more about making the ball rise quite high and then drop.
Then the goalkeepers often have problems. It also moves a lot in the air.
When did I start doing this? I think it was a year, a year and a half ago after training.
My shots almost never go in, so I thought I'd try something.
I watched it back and practiced it more and more.
I would also practice with Joshua Kimmich when on international duty,
and it's slowly getting better, in training at least.
Would you take free kicks, if you're practising them?
I think we've already got a few lads who enjoy doing that,
but I could certainly see myself taking one or two, why not?
And maybe it'll go in!
And Marco can do it even better than you? -Perfectly.
Really? -Absolutely, yes.
I've often stood and watched how he does it.
We've taken the mick out of each other!
We practised free kicks two weeks ago, and Marco did it perfectly in training.
Every third or fourth shot would be good, but Marco fired it in one after the other.
It's an incredible talent to have, you have to say.
The goal against Gladbach was not a real strike...
It flew so weirdly through the air!
Firstly, the goalkeeper couldn't see where it was going,
and secondly he maybe thought it was going over because the ball went so high.
But it suddenly dropped and went in off the bar - amazing goal.
The goalkeeper was completely baffled, he couldn't do anything.
So you'll be taking free kicks now, is there anything else you plan to do?
A few things!
Of course, you always have a few things planned. But you stay quiet
and keep your cards close to your chest!
Now we come to something that I always plan to do,
and that is beating my opponent in the Head-to-Head.
Nobby against Julian.
I didn't come out of it very well last time, I think.
You probably don't have that on your card, do you?
Last time I won 2-0 - see, it's there.
You've obviously written it in bold, haven't you. -No not at all!
Okay, it is slightly highlighted. -Very well!
So - three scenarios,
black or yellow, let's go!
HEAD-TO-HEAD
HITS THE PRESS OR HITS THE DOG
Do they mean the shot?
I don't know, I have no idea what this is. I don't know.
3... 2...1...
Oh good, different answers.
No idea, perhaps a dog runs on the pitch.
Ah yes.
That was obvious.
Why did I think there'd be a dog?!
I think they are members of the press and that I have the first point.
Yes, unfortunately.
Great.
Hits the dog! How can you even think there would be a dog?!
DESTROYS THE NET OR SHOUTS AT THE POST
Destroys the net... shouts at the post…
These are weird things - goal or no goal would be easier…
Well we are obviously much more intellectually developed. -That's true.
3… 2... 1...
It looks like he goes up to the post and shouts at it.
I couldn't really see "destroys the net" happening.
That's Flemming Povlsen, isn't it?
And now he goes to the post.
SHOUTS AT THE POST
You wonder what the post had said!
He was definitely upset.
I'm still leading.
DIVE BY DEDE OR PITCH INVADER FROM THE SKY
What does "pitch invader from the sky" mean?
I don't understand it either.
3… 2… 1...
I don't think there would be a dive... -It's like the game is stopped or something.
It doesn't look like Dede...
PITCH INVADER FROM THE SKY
Is that real? He just flew in? -Yeah, it is.
Quickly in, quickly out. And then he was gone.
So let's take a look at the latest scores.
Nobby 39, all other guests 36.
What's your first thought upon seeing that?
It's not over yet, is what I think. There's a few more to come.
You're just upset!
Still, you can be happy for now, but...
You're a very welcome guest, by the way.
I know I beat you on my first Matchday Magazine appearance,
but for some reason it's not working anymore.
It's like on the pitch, sometimes the passes don't make it when they did before.
I need to change something, shave my head or something.
No, from tomorrow it'll be fine.
That's it for today's Matchday Magazine.
You'll score a goal tomorrow,
maybe from a free kick even, I'm not quite sure.
I'm crossing my fingers, of course.
It was great that you took the time to be here. -Thanks, always a pleasure.
Julian, all the best, and keep fit!
Cross your fingers at home. -Exactly, it's important.
See you next time. Goodbye from Nobby and Julian!
