Hand Pulled Cotton Candy | How to Make Dragon's Beard - Duration: 10:03.

hey everyone its James from fun foods and today I'm gonna show you how to make this hand

pulled cotton candy now this is a great dessert because you can eat it just as

it is or you can use it on other types of desserts as decorations so keep

watching I'll show you step by step how to make this the first thing we want to

do is start off with a medium bowl and to that I'm gonna add two cups of sugar

I'm also gonna add 1/4 of a cup of light corn syrup next add a teaspoon of

vinegar and in a separate container I have 1 cup of water I'm going to add a

few drops of pink food coloring to it just mix this in a few more drops and the

reason we're mixing this in separately is we don't want to over mix our mixture

here so we're gonna pour that 1 cup of water with the food coloring in there

and we want to give it a gentle mix make sure you don't slosh things around too

much

now just take this over a stove we're going to heat it up until it gets to 269

degrees Fahrenheit now we're just gonna turn our burner on medium and we just

want to leave it be and let it reach temperature after about 5 minutes you'll

see it starts to boil a little bit just still leave it be and if you want you

can put your candy thermometer in at this time and just make sure it doesn't

touch the bottom of the pot set that up and we're gonna wait until it gets to

269 degrees Fahrenheit and occasionally you want to take a damp brush and wipe

down the sides so that we don't have any crystallization okay at this point is

reached 269 degrees Fahrenheit so I'm gonna cut off my heat and I'm gonna let

it sit there it's going to continue to rise in temperature don't worry that's

perfectly normal but it's only gonna rise a couple degrees now at this point

if you're putting it into a silicone mold

you can pour it straight into that mold I'm going to use this plastic container

so I'm going to let the temperature come down to about 212 degrees before I pour

it in this container so after your temperature has come down about 212

degrees Fahrenheit we can pour it into our plastic container now just let this

cool down and harden up now what we need to do is take some cornstarch and just

put it on a surface I have a baking sheet here and you're gonna need about 2

to 3 cups worth of this cornstarch and then we take our candy this has been

sitting and firming up for about 3 to 4 hours and we just want to kind of open

this up and see if we can pop this out if it doesn't come out no big deal take

it put it in the microwave for about 10 seconds and that'll make it easier for it to

come out alright so I'm just kind of working the plastic a little bit and

hopefully it'll pop right out

I'm gonna use offset spatulas try to get in there and loosen this up you use a

silicone mold it's much easier and I couldn't find a silicone mold that was

in the shape I was looking for now this is proving to be a real pain getting out

of this okay so now let's pop this out

and you should be left with this nice circular shape just pop it into your

cornstarch and what we're going to do now is kind of make a hole in the middle

here as we work this and make it like a big doughnut just slowly work it

there we go and now what you need to do is we're just gonna kind of squeeze this

together and pull it apart as we circle around and we're just keeping that shape

of that big giant donut and we're just slightly pulling it just a little bit as

we circle around and you kind of keep it dipped into the cornstarch as you circle

around a little bit and you see your doughnuts getting bigger and bigger as

you go and it should pull apart fairly easily it is a lot of work you don't

want to over pull it but just pull it enough and right when it gets to about

arm's length wide what we're gonna do now about this length is take it like

this and we're gonna twist it like a figure eight put it back and now it's

doubled right and again we're just going to go around just like we did the first

time but now with two strands and pull these

and when it's about the same length it was the first time take it again

figure eight it back together my arms already getting tired and we're

nowhere near completion alright and just keep doing it stretch pull stretch and

pull and again take the four strands twist it figure eight now we have eight

who you can take a break every once in a while this is a workout guys and just be

careful not to break them off you can kind of squeeze them together if they do

you just want to pull ever so slightly I pulled a little too much and broke one

of my strands off

alrigth and then twists

so I'm having some strands break off it's okay but you try not to break them

off be very gentle with them only cool a little bit we're just going through in

some of these real thick strands that have broke off I'll just kind of make

sure they're about the same size as the rest of the strands if they don't break

off it's much easier and you can see how hard it's getting to be with me because

I broke off some of these strands and really be careful as you break them off

it makes it much much harder but we're gonna keep going just remember to keep

it dipped in that cornstarch as you go you see it's coming along pretty nice

we're gonna twist and pull again now it's up to you when you want to stop it

it could you could stop at this stage it's pretty good but I'm gonna go one

more turn my arms are killing me this is crazy

all this for candy

alright guys so this is our hand pulled cotton candy Wow well now it's time for

the taste test I'm gonna try one I'm talking a little bit of the cotton candy

that I put on one of the sticks and see how it tastes

tastes like bubblegum to me like bubblegum flavor what's just me but it

definitely has a different texture than your normal cotton candy but it's good

well thanks everyone for watching I hope you enjoyed watching you make this hand

Why Was the Jungle Moon Spared?- Steven Universe Theory - Duration: 7:06.

Hey everyone, this is Hailey from Cartoon Universe!

I'm back with another Steven Universe theory that has to do with the latest batch of episodes,

also known as Steven Universe Stranded.

Specifically, I am once again discussing the contents of the episode Jungle Moon.

In fact, I am actually talking about the jungle moon itself and why it has been left intact

over the millennia.

This video topic was picked by my patrons over at Patreon in a weekly exclusive poll.

If you'd like to help me choose which video to make, all you have to do is support the

channel for as little as one dollar a month.

There are also some other cool rewards there, so make sure to check the page out!

Anyways, back to the topic at hand.

The Jungle Moon is the satellite we saw Stevonnie explore throughout the titular episode.

With few resources, they were forced to survive for a while until they were able to contact

Lars and get him to rescue them.

What we saw on this planet was unlike anything we had seen before in the show.

A place that was not earth nor an artificial environment.

This Jungle Moon was flourishing with alien life.

Not only that, but life has overrun the structure created by the Diamonds when they used to

occupy the planet.

Yet, as I just mentioned, there is clear Gem influence on this moon, as shown by the diamond

base.

So why is it not void of all life and turned into an empty husk, like the planet it once

orbited?

Well, it may be as simple as the fact that this was indeed just a moon, and the only

target the diamonds had in mind was the planet across from it.

Perhaps since the moon was too small, despite the fact that it had life, it wasn't worth

their time to also try and make kindergartens in it.

Or perhaps it didn't have the right combination of environments to allow kindergartens.

Yet we saw kindergartens on homeworld so it seems like they can be placed almost anywhere.

Combine this with the fact that colonies always need to have a diamond base, just as the Earth

had the Moon Base, and we can get an answer.

Another possibility is that the fact that it had organic life, which then made gems

curious enough to study this place further.

If you notice in the episode, the bird-like creature on this moon does do a move where

it rolls its whole body.

This is visually similar to the spin dash that Amethyst and Jasper can do.

Perhaps the gems replicated what some of these creature could do and used it when creating

new gems.

So those are some options.

But there is something that makes me very curious about what this moon looks like currently.

Okay, let's assume that my first idea is correct and the Jungle Moon wasn't worth the time

it took to try and suck all the energy out of.

Then why is the diamond base in such disarray?

I do understand it being overran by plants, as that is common with abandoned buildings

even here on Earth.

But, why is there still that crack on the glass that Pink Diamond created?

Shouldn't Yellow Diamond have quickly fixed that?

The colony looked nowhere near being finished when we saw it in the flashback/ dream sequence.

Colonies take many, many years to complete.

There's no way that planet could have gone from flourishing to barren in a matter of

days.

It is possible that the crack went unnoticed by Yellow Diamond and the rest of the gems

that resided there while the colony was being excavated.

However, since Pink Diamond applied enough force to actually crack the glass panel, surely

this would have made a loud enough sound for Yellow Diamond to hear it.

This base was a place where a diamond might live for a while, surely, they would want

it in tip top shape without it having any flaws such as a broken panel that could possibly

lead to the base being exposed.

But, perhaps it was not that Yellow Diamond didn't notice it, it was that she did not

care enough, despite it destroying the perfection of the place.

This was, after all, a temporary place that she would live in to watch over this colony.

But more importantly, it showed that she might have been purposely ignoring Pink Diamond's

actions.

This was just another way that Pink was acting like a child instead of a leader.

Bringing attention to all of her fits of rage would only make Pink do them more often so

she could get what she wanted.

And sure, other gems may have noticed it, but they probably would not have dared question

the action of a diamond and try and fix the panel without a diamond telling them to do

so.

So, there it stayed for thousands of years until Stevonnie stumbled upon it.

This does not explain, however, why the devices inside of the base still work.

You would think that if things went as planned, at the end of the mission everything would

be shut down properly once there was no longer any use for them.

That brings me to the conclusion that it was eventually left in a hurry.

Possibly this had to do with the war on earth requiring that Yellow Diamond bring all her

forces there.

Probably soon after this flashback PD did get Earth as her first colony, so this makes

sense.

As stated in a recent episode of the offical Steven Universe podcast, the planet across

from the Jungle Moon was a

successful colony, so perhaps they just didn't get to do a few final things like shutting

everything down.

Also, a quick side note is that this ruined planet doesn't look quite as barren as what

the Diamonds had planned for earth.

This could be because Earth had more potential resources, or the diamonds left this planet

in favor for another eventually.

Also, going back to why the planet looks the way it does, maybe gems really don't care

about keeping things running, and left it like this in case they need them later.

It's not like the code to use their devices is only 5 inputs long!

Oh wait... it is.

*shrug*

Did they really not think that there was other intelligent life out there that could possibly

take advantage of their technology?

I suppose not, but that would be a video for another day.

Now is the time in the video where I ask you guys your thoughts on this video!

Do you think it was just because the Jungle Moon was a moon that the diamonds kept it

as it was?

Or was it something more complex?

Let me know in the comments below and make sure to subscribe if you haven't already!

Also, thank you to all my patrons who help support the channel.

Like I said before, this video was picked from a list of ideas on what video to make

next.

Another cool patreon reward is that you get to request any show for me to make a video

on.

So if you are dying for me to make a video on, say, OK KO, this is how you get me to

do just that!

Thank you for watching and have an animated day!

Dangerous Minds Episode 1 - Cicero - Duration: 5:14.

Cicero was a dedicated citizen of the Roman Republic.

By the time he reached its highest office, that of consul in 63 BCE, it was

an institution that had lasted over 500 years.

Cicero would be one of its last defenders.

Cicero's most influential book 'De Officiis' or 'On Duties' was written at

the height of the conflict over the future of the Republic.

Cicero had refused to join the alliance between Julius Caesar, Crassus and Pompey,

known as the First Triumvirate, and even pleaded with Julius Caesar in order to

preserve the Republic. But it was all in vain, and in 44 BCE Caesar was violently

murdered. It was at this point when the Republic could either be restored or

destroyed forever that Cicero wrote 'De Officiis'.

In 'De Officiis' Cicero was making a direct attack on those like Caesar and

Mark Antony who were corrupting what he saw as the foundational principles of

the Roman Republic; primarily the sense of civic duty which lay at its

foundation. For Cicero our public life ought to come first, we should fix our

gaze on what it's good for the Republic not for ourselves. We have a duty to

human fellowship over and above any others. Furthermore, and importantly for

later thinkers, Cicero suggested that in working out what our duty is, we should

always assume that the good and honourable action is the same as the

useful or profitable one; no dishonest action can ever lead to the good of the

Republic. 1,500 years later, Machiavelli will have a thing or two to say about

this.

Cicero followed his own advice, returning to politics as was his duty and doing

his best to pursue the honourable course. This meant opposing the rise of Mark

Antony. Cicero made a fundamental miscalculation, however, reportedly

stating that the young Octavian, later Augustus Caesar, could be used against

Antony and then "disposed of". Octavian did not take kindly to this; a year after

writing 'De officiis', Cicero's captured by Octavian's troops and killed. His head

and hands were displayed on the speakers' platform in Rome; a warning to those who

might think and write as he did.

The attendants were terror struck thinking

that more soldiers were coming and Laenas, who had once actually won a

court case with Cicero's support, dragged him from the litter and cut his head off.

It took three blows and some sawing through because of his inexperience.

He also to cut off the hand with which Cicero had written his speeches against

Antony, portraying him as a despot.

Cicero's head and hand for a long time were fastened to the rostrum

in the forum where he had previously played the popular leader. And more

people came to see his severed head and hand than had come to listen to him

speak. It is said that Antony had the head placed before his table at meals,

until he was sated with looking at the vile object.

The roman republic may have died shortly after Cicero but his ideas lasted long

after. The rediscovery of his texts in the Renaissance became the foundation

for a new movement, humanism. Civic humanists espoused the same ideals of

duty and sacrifice to the Commonwealth as Cicero, seeking to oppose the tyranny

of those who would rule it arbitrarily.

JFK " And so my fellow Americans -

ask not what your country can do for you...

...ask what you can do for your country."

controls everything so hopefully next Wednesday we should have some very good

news there is an interesting word there is a word in the English language that I

really love and that word is the word is adversity adversity

the word adversity means difficulty problems that come along that make

things difficult to do and I love this word now one of the hardest things in

life to get used to is adversity things going wrong the older you get the more

you realize that adversity is never very far away there is always a problem or a

difficulty or something that must be sorted out or rearranged just around the

corner it's true so at the moment I have quite a lot of adversity to deal with

I've had some technical issues but hopefully next week we will have some

good news so here we go then oh my goodness it's Sunday before I

continue did you see the livestream last Thursday I was actually on YouTube live

last Thursday did you see it I was on very late at night I I did a

very special livestream between 10 o'clock at night and midnight so I

stayed on for over two hours live just in case you missed it it is available on

my youtube channel I hope you've had a good week how is your week being mine

hasn't been too bad very busy lots of things going on including trying to get

my studio working normally so first of all can I just say before we go any

further if there are any problems today with the technical side if anything

suddenly stops working I hope you will bear with me but hopefully next week

everything will be back to normal whatever normal is so we have the live

chat of course hello to the live chat let's have a look shall we

oh hello - Julie hello Julie you are first today on the live chat

hello to you also alle at 1 hello to you also Pedro hello Pedro nice to see you

today I think I might have a cold coming so

today I might be sniffing a little bit I think I might have a slight cold coming

and the reason is because everyone at the moment here in the UK is sick they

are unwell there are lots of colds lots of fevers and worst of all lots of flu

going around at the moment influenza is a very serious illness

especially if you are very young or very old so many people at the moment in the

UK are suffering some type of fever maybe a slight cold or a slight fever or

maybe something very serious such as influenza and there are many different

types of flu at the moment we have an outbreak of a particular type of flu

which apparently originated in Australia it's true I'm not joking so the live

chat is up and running let's have a look because of course you are the most

important part of everything we do here coming up later on we're talking about a

lot of things exciting things happening next week of course because the Winter

Olympic Games begin next week in South Korea I nearly said North Korea but of

course it's in South Korea a place called

prong Chang pyeongchang Gooden to give it its full name so the Winter Olympics

begin I believe it's next Friday and they run

for around about two weeks something also to mention about this month is I

will be here next Sunday but I won't be here the Sunday after and the reason for

that is because I have a lot of things going on that week some very personal

things happening also I will be making some changes here in the studio so I

won't be here the week after next so next Sunday I'm here but the week after

I will not be here just to let you know so on the 18th of February I will not be

here because I'm going to take the studio to

pieces hopefully the computer problem will be solved as well and then the

following week which is the 25th of February I will be back and of course so

will mr. Steve a lot of people have asked about mr. Steve I've had some

messages concerning whether or not mr. Steve drinks and drives can I just clear

something up now mr. Steve does not drink alcohol and then go in the car so

he doesn't he doesn't drink and drive I don't know why the other night I was

saying some very outrageous things to mr. Steve I was accusing Steve of being

drunk and driving can I just say now that mr. Steve never does that ever ever

I'm glad we've cleared that up so what time is it it is now coming up to

quarter past two of course I just mentioned mr. Steve mr. Steve will be

here later on in a roundabout around about 15 minutes mr. Steve will be

right here back to the live chat oh hello - Hannon hello Hannon how are you

today are you ok I really hope so

hello everyone greetings from Buenos Aires and that of course is Belarusian

one of my very loyal viewers also a big hello to AG nan Zi also - Jill zero -

fat a fat a catch em says hello mr. Duncan Wow so many people already on the

live chat oh we have France watching at the moment a big Bonjour - France hello

to you Patricia is watching in France where are you mr. Duncan

and where is Steve well I'm here at the moment but mr. Steve will be arriving

soon he will be with me and also you in

around about 15 minutes so don't worry lots of people seem to really like mr.

Steve now hello mr. Duncan says Rossa hello rose sir thank you very much for

joining me again when Joe say Rodriguez says what ah yes which I believe is

hello hello from Quang Pham also Silvana wow so many people here already can we

make friendships in facebook says Allah at one of course you can and that is the

most amazing part of being on the Internet is that you can contact many

people you can create groups you can talk about your interests and of course

for me the most important thing of all is you can share your views and your

opinions and one of the things I love about nowadays is that we can all share

our opinions so some people believe this and some people believe

that and the beautiful thing nowadays is we can share our opinions we don't

always agree but what I always say is it is a good thing

that we are talking to each other and that is the most important thing of all

of course I just mentioned the Olympic Games the Winter Olympics are starting

next week next Friday and of course North Korea and South

Korea will be together in the games which I think is a pretty good thing a

very positive thing maybe some people don't agree with it whilst others do and

there we go we're back to opinions so some people think one thing and some

people think the opposite hello Duncan how are you today says canola

hello canola thank you very much for joining me yes I've had a very busy week

I'm okay but I think I might have a slight cold a slight cold coming so I I

hope that everything will be okay Wilson Alonso mr. Duncan we love you because

you are a real person you are not here to make money

well that's true many years ago I I started making videos on YouTube and I

did it all and I got nothing for it I did it for a very long time and I didn't

get anything for it but fortunately YouTube started giving a

little bit of money to the people who made videos but even now it is it isn't

very much trust me so not everyone on YouTube is a

multimillionaire it's true and I'm I'm one of those

people who isn't a multimillionaire because of YouTube it's true so thank

you very much Wilson Alonso you don't give up now I never give up as I

mentioned earlier doing this is not easy it's very very

difficult you have lots of technical problems to sort out of course you also

get a lot of hate as well so the moment you come onto the Internet the moment

you make yourself noticed to other people you will sometimes get hate from

other people as well so there are many things that you have to get used to

there are many things you have to become accustomed to to survive in the public

eye and for those who aren't aware I've been doing this now for over 11 years so

I've been here on YouTube making these videos for over 11 years this year is my

12th year on YouTube all the best mr. Duncan we know oh how are you doing are

you okay yes I'm okay as sonal a sonal man thank you very much van long is here

glad to see your livestream well I'm very glad to be here more than you will

ever know I am so happy to be here today you were really late on Thursday yes

it's true and all of my neighbours had gone to bed so everyone living around me

on Thursday evening they had already gone to bed and I was still up doing my

livestream but I hope you enjoyed it it's something that I might do more

often so I will do these things if you want me to do them I don't mind it is a

pleasure mr. Duncan have you fixed your computer I hope I will hope I will keep

my fingers crossed that's what I'm doing at the moment and for those who are

religious could you please say a prayer for my new computer because I'm hoping

next Wednesday that I will have some good news

news concerning the computer so next Wednesday I will give you an update but

for the time being I am keeping my my fingers crossed here we are again my

very best English teacher Oh Thank You Jer Jer Marc hey thank you

very much for that that's very kind of you I have received some very lovely

messages this week from many people watching around the world saying how

much they enjoy my lessons and also I have some messages from people who've

been watching for many years even this morning I received some lovely lovely

messages greetings from Russia hello Russia prove it to you

thank you very much Maria Markovic is here thank you very much I think I might

have a cold coming if I get a cold I'm going to be so annoyed hi there finally

sunday has arrived Tomic is here hello Tomic nice to see

you here as well lots of regular viewers here today thank you it's always lovely

to see my my long-term viewers and students hello from Frontera

in Mexico and that is from Adelbert Oh ed Alberto Rodriguez watching in Mexico

a big Ola to you as well my goodness so many people on today we are safe from

that I don't know what that means hello there in Madrid it's snowing in

Madrid and that comes from Mercedes Ferran des so apparently at the moment

it is snowing in Madrid wow you are so lucky talking of the weather I haven't

mentioned the weather today now normally the weather is the first

thing I mentioned but today it isn't but hopefully because it's such a lovely

day outside it's very cold but the weather is beautiful we have had some

lovely sunshine this morning so maybe in the second hour I will try to arrange an

outside stream now as I mentioned earlier I have some technical problems

at the moment with my computer and other things so I will try to go outside and

hopefully we will be able to spend a few moments outside live in the beautiful

weather it was very sunny earlier having said that is also very cold it's very

cold

my cat I don't know what that means Luciano is here thank you very much

Luciano mr. Steve is a big fan of you because he likes opera and all sorts of

music talking of which mr. Steve will be here a little bit later with some words

some terms some ways of expressing music and the way in which music is made and

performed Brazil is here saying hello to our very best English teacher Jer Markie

or Markie thank you very much for joining me today

Wow so many people are here I'm overwhelmed do you like my little bell

can you see here I have a little bell and this is to let mr. Steve know where

I am so he knows where I am all the time just like a cat so as I'm walking around

the house you can hear and that means that I'm nearby just like a pet just

like a pet isn't that lovely hi mr. Duncan says Juan yes mr. Steve

did have some beer the other night he did have a drink of beer but he only had

a little bit just a very small drink so he wasn't drunk the other night I can't

I can't make that clear enough I have to keep saying that Mika odhh is here

watching in Japan hello to Japan and hello - Mika many people at the moment

are suffering from flu in Japan as well fortunately I am well I'm very glad to

hear it please take care mr. Duncan don't become

sick I will try to avoid it but at the moment there are so

many people around who are unwell they have colds and fever and as I

mentioned earlier quite a few people are suffering from flu at the moment and of

course we mustn't forget that flu can be a very deadly illness it can and it does

kill thousands and thousands of people every year

Jamelia is here o Jamelia thanks for joining me I love your shirt yes I

thought today I thought I would wear a different shirt so normally I have my

smiley face shirt but today I thought I would dress differently and wear my one

of my purple shirts as I mentioned the other night I do like purple if I'm in a

particular mood I like to wear purple and today that's what I'm doing

are you coming down with something says temeka if you come down with something

it means you have become ill you have caught an illness maybe a virus so you

have come down with something it's a great expression actually so if

you come down with something it means you have become ill due to an illness or

a virus hi mr. Duncan how are you doing analytic brain is here analytic brain

analytic brain is now on the live chat that's your song I hope you enjoyed it

hi mr. Duncan how are you doing hope your new system is working well we don't

know yet we don't know we will find out next week what happens I'm keeping my

fingers crossed don't forget for those who like to pray

could you please pray for my new computer and I hope it arrives soon

germar cook maki says please come to visitors in brazil it would be a

pleasure well the other night mr. Steve was talking all about Brazil because he

loves coffee and also I think he really does want to go to Brazil one day I

think he's really fairly interested so if anyone would like to have mr. Steve

living with them for a few days in Brazil trust me you don't want to do

that definitely so mr. Steve is on the way we are coming

up to half-past two and it's Sunday afternoon and as you can see we are as

live as live can't be mr. Steve today we'll be talking about terms words

connected to music and performing music a big hello from Sicily hello Sicily

hello to Italy and Maria is here Maria LaRosa

oh thank you very much for that I am okay but I haven't fixed my computer yet

and that's the reason why everything looks very different still so we still

have a few days to wait before everything is sorted out but as I said I

hope there will be some good news next week next week

are you happy I hope so Giorgio is here are you happy Giorgio I hope so

well sir great I am from Pakistan hello to Pakistan and also hello to a Tula a

to Lacan I hope I pronounced your name right

English helps us to communicate and understand each other it's true as I

said earlier one of the things I love about nowadays one of the things I love

about living in the 21st century is the fact that it is very easy to

communicate with other people and I think really we we kind of take it for

granted that we can do it we don't even think

it now but it's amazing that we can live in this age where everything is so easy

to do and I think communication is always a very important thing just like

what is happening at the moment in Korea with North Korea and South Korea next

week joining together for the Winter Olympic Games so maybe it is the start

of something new who knows I always say that it is good to talk and communicate

hello mr. Duncan David sauce and also a tous car hello there I'm okay not too

bad even though I think I might have a slight cold coming so much blue in this

video and glowing lights and even you are glowing thank you very much I think

that's a good thing isn't it if we say that someone is glowing it

means that they they look very healthy so I hope I am glowing today could I

have your Facebook mr. Duncan yes you can find all of my details on my youtube

channel my youtube channel so my Facebook page and all the other details

are there Oh mr. Duncan you've got fans you've got lots of fans and also love

Thank You Swan I had a message just from Coventry I've lost it now oh by Dilla Oh

by Dulla Malad is watching in Coventry which is in the UK yes in the UK so not

very far away from where I am at the moment

say hello to Indonesia says Beema Beema official hello to everyone watching in

Indonesia it must be very very late now though is it very late or very early

I think it must be very late now I followed you and you are a very big

teacher of English thank you David that's very kind of you mr. Steve he's

on his way in fact as I look into the distance coming out of the mist across

the moor it's a little bit like weathering heights really here comes mr.

Steve across the the misty Moor come on mr. Steve Oh stand over here you can

stand there thank you hello everyone its mr. mr. Steve is here hello are you

forgot your water by the way I forgot my water left it on the kitchen table and

he might need that later when his throat gets a bit dry so I thought I'd bring it

in for him well you know what I think Steve I think I might have a cold coming

a cold I've been sniffing all morning I think I

might have a cold coming if you told me that I wouldn't have come in to down

don't particularly want to stand by you I've got a performance in two weeks I

don't want to get a throat infection no I don't I don't think it's serious I

think I think it's just a little sniff I I think I'm okay by this water by the

way is freezing cold ah but I heated it up in the microwave

oh so it's a bit warmer icees yeah so you've heated this water up just for me

yes because I thought that one what is a bit cold by the way they're the top

matches your what where's your normal t-shirt mr. Duncan you're very behind

the time Steve I've already mentioned today I'm wearing purple I'm in a very

purple mood that was a purple top on that on that water so the bottle top

actually matches my shirts look at that Wow should I put it over there for you

or do you want to take a swig no I'm going to put it on the floor so say

hello Steve hello Steve oh yeah hello hello

hello and it's me again yes I was here on Wednesday for an impromptu entry into

mr. Duncan's live Englishness and I came back Thursday night Thursday night and

he's I don't know what he's doing down there

he don't he told me he said whatever you do don't move around when you come onto

camera just stay in one position and he's already broken the rule that he

made hello being attacked by a polar bear oh there must be some penguins

nearby mr. Steve where do polar bears live they live in Africa

polar bears they live probably on the other is the south or the North Pole one

of the two and where do penguins live in a different place apart from in your

studio where they're both living very happily together remember penguins live

in the Antarctic and polar bears live in the Arctic North Pole yes they live in

the northern hemisphere let's hope we're right Howie

we're definitely right they they never live together a lot of people think that

polar bears and penguins live together I'm not going to say who thinks that I'm

not telling you who them now I was joking at the time when we made that

reference yes ago were joking you have sought to

bring this up yet again in order to try and ridicule me in front of all your

listeners you little liar viewers do you like mr. steve has given me a little

bell to wear so he knows where I am so well I'm walking around the house they

leave me I always know where you are mr. Duncan because I can hear you his voice

he never shuts up what are we going today then mr. Duncan well that's a very

good question I've prepared some things I have is well coming up today mr. Steve

is going to talk about musical terms because on Thursday night

when we did our very live and late live stream live in late you know I think we

might do something in the week what do you think do you think it's a good idea

what what do you think should we do an extra live stream in the week so we're

going to see today what what people say we're going to get a kind of vote it

won't be very accurate but we're going to get a sense of what you think so

would you like to see mr. Steve and myself war often so maybe during the

week so last thirsty we did a special live stream very late of one off it was

but it might not be a one off we might actually do it on a regular basis I

think we asked last week and quite a few people said yes will you you just use a

very interesting word by the way impromptu yes that means a unexpected

unrehearsed a sudden something that suddenly happens that wasn't expected

impromptu that's an interesting word so that very that correctly yes very good

so impromptu is something that you do kind of I suppose without rehearsal or

without any preparation you do it on the spur of the moment

another good phrase hello mr. Duncan what's happened have you still not fixed

your computer everyone is mentioning the computer the computer isn't fixed yet

that's why we're standing here in this very awkward way it's very very awkward

I feel so awkward it's working but it's got limited capabilities yes like it

keeps getting very hot and switching off but as I said on Thursday night mr.

Duncan has spent most of the week researching what new special occasion of

computer decays and I've come back knees up piles of paper printed out so shall I

get this one should I get that one do I need a bigger graphics card what size

motherboards should I get that processor all this

process at what I certainly don't know because I'm not an expert in technology

or computers that there is one thing that I'm getting there though aren't you

I have learnt I have learnt a lot about computers over the last few days there

so during the past few days I have learnt a lot about computers and and

what you actually need to do certain things and sadly the computer I have at

the moment is not working very well at all in fact I'm surprised we are still

on so if we suddenly disappear that's because my computer is melting away well

you've only got one camera on so I think it'll be all right that's if you work

mr. Duncan was going to even he entertained the idea of building his own

computer from scratch yes I was going to do it just can I can I just show you

something just just gonna hold that for me I will put that there

and what can see myself it's very unnerving yes mr. Duncan researched

because a lot of people who do gaming on computers and online need these very

high specification computers and because they're quite expensive a lot of them

build their own computers themselves so mr. Duncan thought what a good idea are

looking to that but I think when we looked at it the problem is if you build

your own computer and you need it for something as important as mr. Duncan's

doing live streaming English if it doesn't work who is he going to go to to

get it fixed so probably better to get a ready built one I think isn't that what

you've decided mr. Duncan who you gonna call computer repairman well

unfortunately my computer is beyond repair so I've decided to replace it but

I was going to build my own I just said that okay can you see this this looks

like some sort of adult toy but it isn't a torture device maybe what you're

referring to well maybe you did reveal that a few weeks ago your mystery

so just to show how prepared I was to build my own computer I actually bought

this and this goes on your wrist so you put this on your wrist and then you you

connect this you don't connect this to the electricity you connect it to it

would do it well he would you connect it to something called an earth an earth so

that safely discharges the electricity away and when you are repairing or

working on a computer when you are inside the computer touching it with

your fingers you must do something called grounding you ground yourself so

this has to be connected to something that sends all the electrical charges to

the ground static electricity you don't need that now because you're I'm not

building your own no but what I thought it was interesting to explain this

because it's it's quite it's quite interesting so I have this now but I

don't actually need it but who knows one day I might have to ground myself by the

way the word ground can also be used by parents towards their teenage children

when they've been naughty or they've done something wrong you might ground

them you stop them from going out you prevent them from leaving the house

because they've been very naughty it is often used in the United States so if

you ground someone it means that you stop them from going out you stop them

from doing what they want and in this sense to ground yourself or to ground

something is to safely discharge static electricity I love this this is great I

feel like I've been arrested you've been a very naughty boy mr. Duncan you can't

go out you're grounded I I I really feel as if I want to put this somewhere I

really want to put it somewhere my nose is running I'm I know I've got him

virus already you see nose is running how do you know that I didn't catch it

take that off mr. dink I might have caught that from you I have not had any

kind of cold or infection because I'm super healthy no you know I had a flu

jab I've had echinacea I've had zinc I've had everything known to man for

preventing the common cold but he still can't have a normal pot there mr. Duncan

well are you gonna leave that on for the rest of this lesson I like this this

this could be the new fashion accessory for 2018 I can wrap it around your neck

we can all walk around and ground ourselves so I've decided not to build

my own computer for two reasons one I really probably wouldn't know what I was

doing and I would probably become very nervous so I would be very worried about

making a mistake doing something wrong or maybe breaking

something whilst trying to build the computer so I've decided to to get a new

computer but someone else is going to do the building for me it's a bit like

going outside you go if you've got plenty of time and no particular

pressure then you could probably build your own but you might need a week it's

a bit like it's it's a bit like deciding that you're going to replace a tile on

the roof of your house you're not quite sure what you're doing it could be

dangerous and it could all go horribly wrong so I don't want that attached to

me mr. Duncan ticularly I'm trying to ground myself through

Steve yes I don't want your static electricity have you ever been struck by

lightning I have not are you sure in struck by lightning mr. Duncan yeah

there's anyone out there have you ever been struck by lightning what's it like

I've always wondered what it slice it like what's it like to be struck by like

I don't think it's Pleasant I want to know I'm suddenly very curious to find

out what it feels like when lightning strikes you is it Pleasant do you go all

all fuzzy now I should think you - I think it's very very unpleasant mr.

Duncan maybe it maybe it's the opposite maybe it's really nice and I don't think

it is lovely I've never seen anybody interviewed on television that's been

struck by lightning it says all that was a pleasant experience I'd like to do

that again next time there's a stall I'll go and stand under that big tree on

the hill and hope I'm struck again I will stand oh no you don't stand under

the tree stand away from the tree don't is how you get a stroke no we know

that's true you shouldn't stand by a tree either

I'll make your mind up you should apparently if you're caught in a storm

in an exposed area you're supposed to lie flat on the ground okay

a sink hello a sink thank you for asking me to sing no right okay on the first oh

here we go on the first day I find myself lucky I found something worth

watching on YouTube is that as oh thank you very much I feel very honored now

thank you very much - a sing there must be something better than this is there

is there anything better than this it's a bit like in the olden days when when

because here in the UK we used to just have four channels on the television so

if there is if there is nothing on television on four channels you had

nothing to do you just sat there staring at the wall no people used to do things

before a television they used to so an it the women used to do that I'm not

about before television I'm not about when television was here or multi

channels you mean when we only had four channels I don't think he's listening to

me there are always things to do for example read read learn a new

language how about that are theirs tuned for starters Zook at 77 in Swindon

I think Swindon is where they are out I went to London in 2011 and had a

beautiful visit to Canterbury beautiful town so you went to London and then you

visited Canterbury and of course Canterbury is very close to London

there's a very nice Cathedral in can it's true I would imagine that that's

where you went Canterbury Cathedral your friend Luciano

is here Oh Pavarotti's here hello hello i love mr.

steve says so cat here in argentina it is very sunny and very hot the weather

here is quite nice today we had a lot of sunshine even though it's freezing cold

the Argentina I say I heard you mention him before I came in about somebody

about me going to Brazil Argentina is fine I'll go there as well yes you know

go by there are many countries that I still want to visit I want to visit

Japan one day I'm very fascinated by the Far East and of course I used to live in

China so I'm very fascinated but I would like to do do more traveling to the

other side of the world so maybe South America or that way but not Australia

yes oh I'd love you to go traveling I think you should mr. Duncan just go far

far away please please somebody if you can find somebody and an

all-expenses-paid trip though mr. Duncan please please take you away from I get

the feeling Steve is trying to get rid of me oh do you want me to read any of

these pre-prepared yes well what are you producing this show suddenly well I just

thought not much happening yet BAM I did something what we've been talking for

for 20 odd minutes when you got wooden spoons down there this is a new feature

that I've started this week and it's called no your spoons it's true let's

see how well so let's have a look I'm going to test mr. Steve now I'm going to

see how well mr. Steve knows his spoons spoons what is that to know about a

spoon mr. Duncan there are many different types of spoon that's why so

Kay first of all here's the first spoon I'm going to show mr. Steve the first

spoon and of course you can join in as well it's time to play know your

spoon so there is the first spoon items

you're holding it up to the camera it looks gigantic so everybody watch it's

not a big spoon okay I will show you the scale of the spoon next to my head there

we go that's better so now you can see that the spoon is

quite small it is a small spoon but mr. Steve for 20 pounds

what is this spoon called it's a tea spoon mr. Duncan yes mr. Steve has got

it right this is a teaspoon teaspoon so this is a small spoon quite often used

for serving sugar and very small amounts of maybe ingredients for a recipe so if

you are adding something you might have one teaspoon or maybe two teaspoons and

of course as I said you put sugar if you have

sugar in your tea you will put sugar in your tea one teaspoon two teaspoons or

in his case three teas three teaspoons so if it's my cup of tea

I put three teaspoons in yes in a traditional cup of tea you always have a

teaspoon by the side to stir your tea with so there it is a teaspoon why it's

called a teaspoon and of course there is there is a song called a teaspoon of

sugar helps the medicine go down in the most delightful way and that's from is

it now I can see it but I can't name it now don't tell me it's not GT bang bang

no her over the hills is it from that one over the hills

which runs it from then come on teller I don't is there a show called over the

hill I'm thinking of a song from it oh I see Chitty Bang Bang well I think

you're getting very confused there it's the sound of music that's the one best

similar but it's not from that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go

down I always thought it was from Mary Poppins it could well be cor blimey Mary

Poppins I do I do declare that yamaneika tenors call blowing me Mary Poppins

anyone was watching those musicals just must have been made in the 1960s they

are remaking Mary Poppins and I think it's being released this year there is a

new version a new version of Mary Poppins the comments mr. doom can

they've all vanished no they're there somebody who could tell

as you see can I take control here here we go there it is so a teaspoon of sugar

helps the medicine go down but which show is it from I think it's from Mary I

think it's from Mary Poppins but mr. Steve thinks it thinks it's from Chitty

Chitty Bang Bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang somebody said yes it's a film made in

the 1960s a musical all about a car that's got a sort of personality of its

own it can fly can fly it's a magical car also in that film is Dick Van Dyke

and who's the other famous actress with a wonderful voice it is is it it's not

Caitlyn Jenner a bit before her time I think is it Caitlyn Jenner no it is not

is it Caitlyn Jenner I can't remember her name which is why I asked you that's

my answer to every question you can't remember either every question that

people ask me now I always say is it Caitlyn Jenner I've seen here half an

hour and all you've talked about is a spoon so here we go so there it is yes

mr. Steve was right it is a teaspoon so you've won twenty

pounds if I wouldn't know but it's not from The Sound of Music it isn't

I love the way that mr. Steve speaks and his sense of humor Thank You sweetness

you've gotta have a sense of humor when you're around mr. Duncan okay here's the

next spoon we are playing net no your spoons soaked for another 20 pounds yes

what is this spoon it's not a big spoon but then it isn't a small spoon so there

it is I will show you the scale next to my head there it is

so mr. Steve can you name this spoon let's see if anybody else has got it yet

a coffee spoon not quite yes it is from Mary Poppins I me I was right so yes a

spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down

somebody's look that up for yes there we go juniors got it right it's a dessert

spoon dessert spoon there it is so somebody somebody said Simona said

soup spoon very close very close yes a soup spoon is normally round it's just a

bit rounder yes so a soup spoon looks like this but the the spoon part is

round so the dessert spoon so this is a dessert spoon normally used for serving

dessert there we go somebody said Alice said tablespoon coming up close again

but a dessert spoon is just a bit is smaller than a dessert then up than a

tablespoon so this is a dessert spoon them together you know there might be

riots in the streets later with people disagreeing on what type of spoon this

is there might be an international incident today caused by this spoon I

doubt it but if you share it together with the next one the logical one to do

next mr. Duncan will be that one Thanks mr. steve is producing the show again do

you like that well I'm helping okay you are helping are you helping

hard or hardly helping so lots of comment and helping I'd be in the

kitchen so here's another spoon oh look at that now this is quite big it's not

huge and take any notice of the color it's a it's a very unclean example of

this type of spoon this is a very old split is antique I think it's

silver-plated it needs a clean it needs a good clean

so this this spoon is quite tarnished tarnished so yes there we go

Jamila has got it right it is in fact a what is it mr. Duncan come on

it's a tablespoon is it not it is it is a huge table but you can also call it a

serving spoon as well so some people refer to this as a serving spoon so mr.

Steve has the dessert spoon however now you can see there is quite a difference

between them quite a tablespoon I've got it wrong now dessert spoon

table spoons so yes often you use a table spoon as well to four servings

which people have said serving good I love mr. Steve helping he is brilliant

oh thank you very much oh you are very misguided so there we go right any more

spoons mr. Duncan you have two more now this this is a good one this is easy

this one so this one mr. Steve what do you think this one is it has been used

many times let's see if anybody else can get this what type of spoon is this I'm

having a look I'm taking control of the the chat on mr. Duncan's phone there we

go not fair Judy said she was first with

something so apologies but that I think Julia is getting

now Julia says I was first sometimes the messages go too quickly and we can't yes

for cooking Ching says for cooking that is that is correct

Julia you got it right again and it is a wooden spoon Julie jeez

yes Julie gee a wooden spoon yes as a lot of people have also pointed out it

is used for cooking and making jam yes you can use it for making jam

in fact this spoon has many many uses it's often used in cooking you use it

whilst cooking yeah and you know why mr. Duncan why you use a wooden spoon for

cooking I think this is something you mentioned last week actually because is

it because of the material yes because the wood is soft so it doesn't scratch

the bottom of your saucepan so this is very good for using in sauce pans or

things that you don't want to get scratched because if you use a metal

spoon it will scratch the sauce but but taken if you've got a a saucepan that's

coated in a nonstick coating if you've got a non-stick pan you don't want to

use metal spoons with that you want to use a wooden spoon and this one has been

and you can get wooden spoons and all sorts of sizes you know I want to be

when I grow up I want to be I want to be one of those people on on game shows you

know when they showed the prize is and then someone stands there and they show

the prize I want to be that person now normally it's a very sexy girl or a sexy

woman but now I want it to be be me instead so so they might say tonight the

star prize is a wooden spoon and then I will show the spoon I will go Jim zero

to have said it said it's a Russian spoon I I'm not sure what a Russian

spoon is but you could be right there oh yes here we go in Russians with wooden

spoons a type of musical instrument musical instrument I didn't know I could

bring it on mr. Duncan's head you you use this as an instrument to play

music Teflon yes Teflon there we go Teflon why have you

said that because I read a says nonstick is Teflon yes if which is rustic if a so

if a saucepan is nonstick you know normally they put Teflon on the saucepan

and then the saucepan doesn't if you burn something which mr. Steve does

quite often and as aridaias said the coating Teflon is actually poisonous so

if you use a metal spoon you'll scrape off little bits of it and then it'll be

in your soup or be in whatever you're cooking and then your you'll you're

actually ingested in this poisonous so yes non-stick pans very important to use

a wooden spoon ingest if you ingest it means you eat and then it goes into your

body it is absorbed you ingest Oh somebody's asked whether you've got any

children if have I got any children no definitely not no we the government have

been castrated many years ago they said it was for the good of humanity that I

didn't produce any offspring so no somebody said they're like this spoon

this spoons big so we can't Eugene says we can hit two spoons together to make

it rhythm what switch that's an annoying sound

that's a rhythm yes you can play the spoon and play this bit yeah I was going

to do that if you put the spoons together like that I know need some sort

of but I think you have to hold them in a certain way and sort of a sort of dude

that's blown your microphones there we go so there's neatly segue into the

weave I'd done that he just shouted at me so here's here's a lovely spoon I

love this this is my favorite spoon in the whole world if anyone asks you what

which spoon does mr. Duncan love the most this is my all-time favorite spoon

isn't that nice it's lovely and this is very useful for many things

you can you could bang nails in with it so if you have you have to clearly jeez

getting quick with a salad spoon yes you can use it as a salad yes you can toss

with this it's very good for tossing a soup spoon by God you gotta have a big

mouth to get that in I don't think this is a soup spoon maybe maybe this is one

of you know you know the story Goldilocks and the three bears maybe

this is this is daddy bear's spoon Alice says Nadel for eating is it's not really

a lei yes you could use it as a lathe Legos are usually mundo metal yes I

think it looks very much like a ladle it is kind of but that's what I mean this

this actual spoon has many different uses you can stir stir I love that word

by the way stir because it has a lot of meanings the word stir if you stir it

means you move so what what would you call that could you mumble while I'm

talking more often somebody says here too much spoon too

much spoon yes this spoon is the best spoon ever I advise you to have one of

them I think I think I think they mean we've been talking too much about spoons

I think that's what you you can't talk too much about a spoon serving space

terrible what a terrible spoons are brilliant stir you see if you stir you

can you can move you can wake up if something starts to move you can say it

stirs if something comes to life after being very still you can say oh I see

now it stirs too many types of spoon make me confused let's go through them

very quickly again so we've gone from having too many spoons to doing it all

over again right in order let's hold them up I'll hold these too you hold

that one it's almost as if we didn't rehearse this

and that one so starting with the smallest teaspoon slightly bigger

dessert spoon over to you mr. Duncan bigger again this is this could be used

as a serving spoon a tablespoon and also as a tablespoon so this one has more

than one use and of course we have the wooden spoon we do which you can use for

stirring things and this won't cooking this won't damage your saucepan and also

apparently in Russia you can use it as a musical instrument and finally my big

stirring spoon or maybe later you can use it as a ladle ladle so yes I like

that a stir so stir also can mean to make trouble or problems for another

person so maybe you stir trouble you stir it you say something that creates

trouble or problems for other people you stir you stir something if you have a

big mouth you can use it well mr. Duncan could easily use that as a dessert spoon

what are you saying are you saying I have a big mouth there we go

I'm getting the hang of this now Steve's getting what is a ladle it says Rianne a

ladle is something used for serving usually soup yes so it's a big you can

use it it's got it's got a very big and you can serve what a big Earth what's an

Earth it's used for serving large quantities of something so if you want

to serve a large quantity of something it's almost like a little Bowl on a

handle so you can serve something in a large quantity and pour I'm saving the

soup and I got a poor one bit into yours one bit into yours

that's a ladle also it's a very good weapon so if you're walking

around at night keep one of these in your pocket and if someone comes up to

you just just clunk them hit them on the head a few times and they won't bother

you again yes a lathe is a long handed spoon for serving liquid food thank you

very much there we go very well put whoever said that Alice very well put

indeed oh if somebody just asked you about your wristband oh no please don't

don't ask him about the wristband you have to watch the beginning of the when

I came on to find out that you have to you have to watch the livestream again I

did explain the the wristband it's gone now by the way it's gone I magically

made it disappeared I did something here Swan wants to know can we show knives

and they're different you well unfortunately unfortunately mr. Steve

has been told he can't handle all have a knife in his hand unfortunately so

unfortunately a couple of his doctors have told me that Steve can't have sharp

objects maybe we can do knives next week or should I go fetch a selection of

knives I have a feeling mr. Steve might be getting a knife out in a moment and

sticking it in me so ten past three mr. Steve I believe you have some words to

show us now on Thursday night we were talking all about music weren't we oh

yes we did touch on that subject I was talking about my favorite music from the

1980s and I thought today it would be a good idea to hand everything over to you

and for you to talk about some words connected to music or performing because

there are quite a few now I think you have quite a list so what I will do I

will stand aside and our like let mr. Steve take over oh and there you are

thought you were going to stay here and comment

oh really would you like that now go away I thought you would be glad to see

me go yeah I thought why you can do you can just stay there not too far away in

case I need you right so these are birds musical tones but they're also

terms that are commonly used in everyday English as well so they're connected

good so I haven't just gone for musical terms that you might not that only be

used by musicians I've gone for terms that can be used in everyday everyday

speak so here's the first one tempo tempo is the speed of a piece of music

the speed of a piece of music the tempo for example a funeral march would be

said to be in a slow tempo and you can have a slow tempo a fast tempo a medium

tempo many musical terms dozens and dozens of musical terms are used to

explain to a musician how the composer wants the speed of that music to go and

I'm not going to go through all those but a couple of them would be Allegro

which is fast and Largo which is slow so tempo is just the speed of a piece of

music but if we're talking about non musical use of the word tempo we can

also describe it if you look in the dictionary it says tempo is the pace of

any movement or activity so the temp for example the tempo of the war is

quickening so we're just saying that the speed of the battle is getting faster

and faster and the pace is gathering another word for tempo would be pace the

pace of something or the tempo of something the tempo of the football

match has slowed down the runner needs to increase his tempo if he wants to win

tempo just means the speed of something so you can use that in everyday English

so here's another one

harmony harmony harmony in music is the sound of two or more notes played

together that sounds Pleasant or desirable a chord - three or four notes

played together will form a harmony so that's in music where you've got musical

harmony notes played together that sound nice or alright

but in a non-musical way you would say that harmony means that you are in

agreement with something or somebody you are in harmony with that person

harmonious is another word wave using that word it means sweet sounding or

free from disagreement or ill feeling so if you are in harmony with someone it

means that there's no ill feeling you agree everything's very pleasant

harmonious it's connected with music where music sounds nice nice harmony so

if you were in harmony with somebody everything's Pleasant everything's nice

everybody's getting on well together so mr. Duncan and mr. Steve are in

harmony with one another well when it comes to teaching English sometimes we

have our disagreements we would say to be in disharmony but I think most of the

time we are in harmony so there's a word that can be used musically and also in

everyday speak as well harmony are we in harmony mr. Duncan

would you say are we in harmony I suppose I suppose you might say

something is harmonious two people who get on well together are in harmony

together yes so a man and wife that gets on very well together they're in harmony

okay here's another one chord Duma chord so technically a chord is a combination

of notes usually three or more played together and when those notes are

played together they make a harmony so a chord is a combination of notes usually

three or more played together so you might you might so could you give an

example like of the notes because some some notes don't go together well as

chords is that right that's right and slowly sang-doo common musical chord

would be a major chord or a minor chord a major and minor major chord is we're

not really getting into musical oh no it's funny but a major chord is is is

the certain combination of notes in a scale of notes that forms a major chord

a major chord sounds right if you play a major chord chord it sounds people know

what if they're musical that what that means a minor chord sounds slightly

scary so so it hits it hits the ear in a pleasant way yes a major chord is a

pleasant sounding chord a happy chord people call it whereas a minor chord I

won't go into the technicalities of that today but a minor chord is one that

sounds just a little bit scary maybe so or not scary slightly depressing a minor

chord music played in a minor chord is is is a bit sort of depressing not

depressing I'm looking for the right word but you would say it was same as

miserable no miserable miserable miserable and then you change to a major

chord and everything brightens up so I wasn't going to really go into that much

of detail so it's the difference between some of them it's very somber and

something that's very pleasant often love songs are in minor chord because

you often get particularly if it's if it's a a song about about baby love that

isn't going very well then it will be played in a minor chord

whereas if something's all happy it's played in a major chord and of course in

any piece of music you switch between the two depending on the mood that you

want to create but in oh so that's the musical way of

using the phrase cord but in everyday English you can say for example it you

can strike a chord with somebody if you strike a chord with someone it means

that you agree with them or you agree with their point of view so for example

you could you could listen to the a politician speaking and he might say

something that that you really agree with you you can say oh that really

struck a chord with me what that politician said yes so if something

strikes a chord it makes you sort of think suddenly or maybe you suddenly

become aware of something instantaneously yes that strikes a chord

with me it may be one two or three separate

little things that somebody said that all come together to form one little

idea it's a bit like a proper chord on a musical instrument two or three notes

played together and if somebody strikes a chord it means that there's a number

of elements coming together that makes that really resonate with you and sound

like it's true and we've all heard politicians that can say things that

make us believe that you know what they're saying is true so if you strike

a chord with somebody it means that you're in agreement with them so that's

that one that's chord will have a will have a

couple of more and then what and then I also have some new words that have been

introduced this week into the Oxford English Dictionary yes those lovely

people at the Oxford University Press have added some new words this week to

the OED the Oxford English Dictionary so we'll

have a little look at those later on as well this one's been around for a while

pitch pitch Pete ITC H that is in musical terms that's the degree of

lowness or highness of a musical note or a voice so a low-pitched note is a low

you sound low a high-pitched voice first guy to be talking very high up like that

would be a high-pitched noise pitch hello my name's high pitch Eric but I'm

going to speak in a manly low-pitched voice it's actually somebody on YouTube

called high pitch Eric m'kay he's a really huge guy but he has

this amazing high voice he sounds like Mickey Mouse and he hello my name's high

pitch Eric high pitch whose high pitch right so can you pitch a note mr. Duncan

there's another use of the word to pitch a note what do we mean when we say can

you pitch a note that means can you copy that exact note that somebody has played

either on a piano or somebody says demonstrates that no can you equal it

can you do exactly the same note so if I were to go hello can you copy that and

do the same thing me yes well say go on I know you can do it no that was it go

on can I play the spoons instead no go do what I just did then la la here we go

mr. Duncan has pitched the same note if you were to do hello you wouldn't be

pitching the note you see so picture note means do exactly the same frequency

basically Alice says there is an expression to pitch your voice higher

which is to raise your voice yes and when people when people start to get

excited they start to talk higher and higher because they make themselves

sound and everybody can hear them oh my goodness that's what people do and they

start to get excited if you get excited you may speak in a higher pitched voice

and in fact you can say that your voice has reached fever pitch when you're

having more and more excited and you can't stop and you're getting really

upset about something you can say I'm talking in fever pitch is that not right

missus I don't know yes I do I have a pitch do I have to call an ambulance

there we go is there a doctor in the house

but other uses of the word pitch that I've got nothing to do with with notes

at all you could pitch a tent which means to erect a tent so if you're

pitching something if you're pitching a tent it means you're putting it together

you're erecting the tent and pitch you put it in place you can pitch a ball

pitch example in baseball where the though the person is throwing the ball

should a batsman that's pitching the ball you know what I throw like a girl

are used as are you surprised when I throw a ball this is how I throw a ball

I go right so another use of the word pitch is a football pitch so a playing

field a playing field for a sport like football or cricket or baseball that is

called the pitch the area that the game is played in usually on grass or

something like that so that's the like a football pitch apparently also you can

say pitch dark or pitch darkness you can I think that means absolute yes because

pitch is is is tar that's it which is black that's it used for use for making

road so if you say something's pitch black it says literally as dark as pitch

so pictures like thing stuff they put on the road it's very sticky and black so

absolute darkness so when it's completely dark you can't see anything

you can say that it's pitch black as dark as pitch so we've had playing field

and now as another use of the word pitch is a salesman's persuasive

talk he's pitch his or her pitch if somebody is trying to sell you a product

they will go through all the benefits of the product and they will talk long and

enthusiastically about it and that's their sales pitch yes

Tomic has just said pitch an idea yes the same thing you are trying to put

something across house right to persuade another person to accept what you are

saying you pitch so a sales pitch or if you are pitching and either you pitch

the idea you are persuading persuading another person to accept your idea

so in the film industry the film business show business if you write a

story and then you go to a film company and you want them to make the film of

your story you have to pitch your idea and that you could do that at work

you could be a group of colleagues and you're trying to persuade them the best

way of doing something at work and you would put your pitch forward and and

they might agree with you mmm so many uses of the word pitch of course we were

mainly looking at the the musical term which is the Highness or lowness of a

note can you pitch a note if you some people can some people can't you've

either got that ability or you haven't I like this one do you yes okay can you

show this one don't say anything just hold it up coming in 2019 the next

terrible Star Wars movie the next movie that will make everyone go what have

they done to Star Wars why is Star Wars so bad now do you remember in 1978 when

everyone got so excited about the original Star Wars movie and now now

they've just destroyed it what if they don't hold the sign up again what's it

got to do with solo mr. de solo is the name of the next Star Wars movie why are

we advertising the next poor Star Wars movie well I'm

not advertising it I'm making a social comment about it it's a bit of social

commentary so there it is so solo as in Han Solo who is a

character from the original Star Wars movie they are making don't think you'll

find that in the Oxford English teacher they are actually making a movie about

the young Han Solo I'm sorry I'm sorry that is going to happen I think it's

about time to leave this planet let's talk about what the word solo actually

means according to the dictionary mr. Duncan we are definitely not in harmony

at the moment solo it's a musical term for a musical piece should I say written

for one voice or one instrument a solo a solo singer or a solo violinist to do

something on your own piano solo well I'm coming onto that obviously in non

musical tones to go solo means to do something on your own fly a plane solo

for example I do many things solo so there we go

you could to go solo also means you break away from a group and go and do

something on your own so many many pop singers start off in a group and then

they decide to break off on their own and go solo go solo yes and can I think

about can you think of a well-known situation one is George Michael of

course George Michael used to be in a group called Wham and then he left and

he went solo he decided to have a career in singing on his own he went solo

Michael Jackson Michael Jackson of course was with the Jacksons and then he

went off on his own and formed a solo career and the rest is history

yes but of course you could do that at work

for example you could be within a group of people and it's not working so you

decide to go off and do it on your own because you think you can do it better

than the group because they're arguing all the time so you go off and go solo

and do it do it your own way often that means that could be another

use of the word you just do something your own way yes I do that at work all

the time you are a very solo person I am I've got lots in this you see you've

upset the order of the way I was doing things now don't worry about it can we

just do one more okay how about this what we've got to do two more because

these two go together you are so awkward rhythm rhythm rhythm

rhy th m there's a very strange spelling of a sound rhythm it's a very strange

words a very strange word is in musical terms it's the pattern produced the

pattern and produced by the emphasis and length of notes in music so it's a

pattern a regular recurring pattern so in nature there are lots of rhythms in

nature the Communist rhythm that we all know about is our heartbeat or heart

rhythm boo-boom boo-boom boo-boom but that's a regular repeating cycle or

seasons is that the sound your heart makes boo-boom boo-boom

something like that it doesn't sound very healthy to me so it's a pattern and

emphasis and the length of notes in music a regular recurring that motion or

repeated pattern over time so that could be repeated over over seconds or minutes

or long periods of time in music it's typically repeated in in quite short

periods of time when we talk about rhythm sometimes we also mentioned

something called B P M beats per minute yes so the rhythm of something well

that's the tempo or the etre of the rhythm yes the tempo that's the

tempo people get tempo and rhythm mixed up but they're very different tempo is

the speed of the music the rhythm stays the same but the rhythm might speed up

if the tempo is faster so if you've got to a combination if you've got set a

dead ur dead ur dead ur dead ur dead urdead but if you that's the rhythm dead

ur dead urdead but if that was ya can be played at a slower tempo dead ur dead

urdead or it could be faster did it that added depth so that's the rhythm is the

repeating notes the pattern and the tempo is the speed of the rhythm so you

are wrong mr. Duncan wrong sometimes you're such a know-it-all oh dear so

there we go in nature we've as we said there's lots of different rhythms even

animals walking and running it's everything's got a rhythm the way

the waves crash against the beach it's a rhythm a pattern repeated over a period

of time life has a rhythm so exactly yes so in music a very common rhythm is the

or beat is the four-four beat four beats to every bar so that's dead dead

lots of lots of dance music pop music is a very common time signature so four

beats in a bar repeated rhythm all the way through another one is 2 4 which is

the March sort of a March a much faster Dada Dada Dada Dada Dada Dada that's the

sort of March rhythm and then we've got the the three-four rhythm or the 3/4

beat which is the waltz dadadada

we haven't rehearsed that are ten by with only rehearsed so that's the common

ballroom dancing rhythm or waltz music as it's called and I've got something

poetry poetry is has as rhythm to it because you stress certain phrases don't

you mr. Duncan you're very good at poetry and that often has repeating sort

of rhythms and sounds so that's a rhythm in poetry and the way the reason I said

that waltz got a gossiper CR mentioned waltz which is the 3/4 time rhythm the

ballroom dancing for couples which we just demonstrated there we didn't

actually dance and we won't demonstrate that because I'm not very good at

dancing so the waltz is a flowing melody in a

3/4 time it sort of is it like don't and yes that's ether you are familiar with

music that a lot of you will be the Viennese waltzes are very common by that

famous composer Strauss most of his pieces of music were in 3/4 and mr.

Duncan is ballroom dancing with a penguin which I don't think it's

probably ever been seen before live anywhere Shane Dawson's never done this

far so Strauss music the Blue Danube the Blue Danube a famous piece of music a

Viennese Waltz done there's a very famous piece of news that the same as a

Viennese slice well not quite a venus lice is a kind of cake derp derp derp

derp derp derp derp derp derp derp derp derp derp derp derp derp derp derp derp

derp derp want everyone good one wanted they don't attend unite

disagreement at the end at that but waltz also has another way you can use

this phrase in other ways in English so if you move in a casual or confident or

bold manner you can be say to be waltzing into the room so you move in a

casual confident manner she came waltzing in here like she owned the

place so if he waltz in somewhere it just means you walking in a very

confident manner and everybody hates you because you're just so confident you

know there's a fool of yourself there's another word swag swag swag yeah

swagger is free swag in that's a more modern use of the phrase to waltz in

apparently jay-z the rapper jay-z was the first person to to introduce swag

into the vocabulary of people so if you walk into a room and you casually stroll

in in a nice rhythmical manner and you look like you own the place

people are saying oh look at him just waltzing in here like he owns the place

a lot of people say mr. Duncan has got lots of swag there we go another if you

if you win something easily that's another use of the word waltz so that

for example the thieves just walked in and waltzed off with the TV and nobody

made a comment so you just waltz in grab something and off you go yes you can do

that or you can get it you can come into a room everyone's for example in a party

everyone's all the men have been eyeing up this girl all night and I think

eyeing up yes they've been attracted to this girl I've been looking at or trying

to build up the confidence to go and ask her for a dance for example or ask her

for a number you can't do that nowadays and okay let's just you need if you do

it nowadays you went you end up on the front page of the New York Times but I'm

saying mr. Duncan that you can't ask her ask a woman now to dance so somebody is

a terrace trying to build up the confidence to go

and talk to a young or a girl trying to talk to a boy somewhere and then you've

probably waited an hour or what should I say what and then somebody else just

comes in walks straight up to them waltzes in and ask them a few questions

get them run off they've gone Qingdao is watching so win something easier to

waltz in and grab it hello Qingdao we've got Qingdao watching

someone in China Gillian Gillian or Gillian is watching in Qingdao which is

in China yeah getting in another one here is a musical term upbeat

oh yes that's me upbeat that means to be optimistic so a conductor does this with

his baton that's called the upbeat but if you are upbeat in life it means you

are optimistic happy raring to go what's the opposite of that is when a conductor

is doing that with his baton that's called the downbeat of his baton but if

you use downbeat in everyday language it means that you're pessimistic down beats

very down beans oh do you think anyone's going to be watching you I don't think

anyone's gonna be watching us today what what's the point what's the point of

doing this no one's watching us go come on Steve let's go that's good nobody's

watching nobody's watching us girl you've been downbeat negative but on the

other hand I'm going through them all now mr. Duncan told me not to grab

haven't got a few left now maestro maestro maestro I'll say three zaimes

maestro is the a conductor in music he's the conductor he's the person the

accomplished person it means somebody who was very accomplished very able they

know everything about that subject the maestro some what some people say that

I'm the maestro of English the the maestro of English the maestro

yes well I was going to use that an example we mr. Duncan so big-headed

you could use your wooden spoon dad dad dad dad dad can I go through the rest of

these now I might as well

I'm just conducting Steve mr. Steve is the maestro of crazy nothing crazy is

that it now got some more just do one more I can't do one more because this is

a set a sect doing that means a collection of thing that can go through

very quickly though no in that case in that case we're not doing any more of

those we're moving on to something else can you guess what it is is very

interesting mr. Duncan some new words were introduced so it and then we can

come back to mine afterwards so prepare these for nothing do ever clanking these

spoons if I'd done that have you noticed in in every live stream I make a noise

you do he gets very annoyed at me doing that there's normally a lot of noise

coming from your mouth and but he's making clanking all these spoons

together which is your throne on the floor okay Steve what what note is this

so Steve knows about music so I'm gonna produce a note now on this spoon so what

what note is this sounds like sounds like a bee or a sea to me look Dean

oh no that's flat it's flat I haven't got perfect pitch if I have perfect

pitch you know what the note is one one more time what with which note sounds

like a sea to me see yes there's no answer right without the keyboard I

don't know because I haven't got perfect pitch you look a bit like a sea thanks a

lot your breaths a bit stinky by the way I think he's cleaned his teeth - that

wasn't my breath get this computer sorted that is not

that is not my bad breath that's just a fart so will that curry he had on Friday

night Oh curry would you like to see stepping on

these spoon they're gonna have an accident in the studio any minute

there is an accident taking place it's been taking place since 2 o'clock and

get a drink of water I'm a bit a bit part we're gonna round we're gonna have

a break now would you like to see mr. Steve and

myself in the kitchen making curry really yes would you like to see that

mr. Steve and myself and also this particular segment has subtitles as well

so stay there Steve I'm going to work though I hope so if it doesn't work it's

been fun being here now just in case everything breaks is that can I stay

here while you go but you stay you don't need to be with me you don't have to

hold my hand I'm okay I'm a big boy now I'll just carry on doing this solo mr.

Duncan until you until you flick a few switches only computer press a few

buttons and show a clip of us making a curry which we made on Friday night

did we not are you ready mr. Duncan do you want me to count you down oh and now

mr. Duncan is going to show a clip a film of us pre-recorded when we were

making a curry on Friday night

oh hello there welcome to my kitchen it is now Friday night and I am busy here

preparing my special Friday night treat mr. Steve will be coming down soon to

help me but for now I am here by myself and can you see what I'm doing I'm

peeling some potatoes we need to have some potatoes peeled peel it's a very

interesting word the word peel can actually be used in many ways for

example peel can mean to remove something slowly for example you peel

the skin from a potato you peel the potato also peel can be described as

removing your clothes slowly so again it is something you are taking off very

slowly so you peel your clothes off also the word peel can mean to ring Dean

Dean a bell the sound of a bell ringing can be described as peal and of course

the thing that you remove from the potato can also be called peel so the

word peel can be used in many many different ways so as I mentioned where

we are having curry tonight ah yes every Friday night mr. Steve and myself we

always have a delicious curry so mr. Steve will be joining me very soon here

in the kitchen and between you and me he will be doing all of the hard work all I

have to do is peel these potatoes I think some of these potatoes have

actually become a little bit rotten so I'm gonna have to be very careful

or peeling these potatoes I have to make sure that all of the rotten parts are

removed because of course no one wants to eat rotten potatoes of course not

mr. Steve will be joining me a little bit later on the live stream and also

here in the kitchen because mr. Steve will be cooking for curry so all I'm

doing for now is preparing the meal preparing the potatoes but to be honest

with you mr. Steve will be doing most of the work we will wait for a few moments

for mr. Steve to come down the stairs and join me here in the kitchen so as

you can see mr. Steve has now joined me in the kitchen so what are we eating

tonight mr. Steve curry having a curry tonight so I've got everything that I

need laid out here and it's a strange curry this because it's my own sort of

concoction here's a word concoction option and it's mr. Steve's special

mixture special recipe it's a bit of this a bit of that so I'm starting off

with some red split lentils there we go chopping those close to the camera

lentils because I like mentors in a curry and they're good for yes lentils

are very good for you so this particular curry is going to be a fish curry and

also with the lentils as well and what style of curry is it Steve so this is a

particular style of courage dialect okay these take about 20 minutes to cook

must say we are enjoying the banging so

banging away in the kitchen so I'll just put this onto the stove or the cooker

and we'll get that cooking so I'm going over here so how long do we have to cook

the lentils for how long did they take Steve right the lentils take about 20

minutes which is what I just said oh right so this is what we're having look

at this we're having buna style curry if you can

give it a bit more else buna buna style which is in the thing I

think the thing I love about this Steve is that this this tastes is good as a

curry that you would have in a restaurant so if you went to a

restaurant and had had a buna it would taste as good as this stuff in the jar

we're not being sponsored by the way just in case you think we're being

sponsored by this company we're not loitering but should you wish to contact

us and and ask her to sponsor and we would be very happily do so because yes

just in case Loyd Grossman is watching and you would like to sponsor my English

lessons please please get in touch thank you very much well let's give him

another plug because there's lots of other flavours that was the buna which

is essentially a very curry based around onions and tomatoes onions and tomatoes

well I think there's all Curry's about onions in heaven over that one got a lot

of tomatoes in we could also have a Rogan Josh there we go a Rogan Josh

which tomatoes and fried onions with ginger and coriander are delicious I

must admit there's one thing I love about curries it's when it has lots of

ginger in it not many people like ginger some people hate ginger and what's the

other one Steve the other one is the old favourite tikka masala

you know if you're not keen on a strong curry that's the one to have tikka

masala so that's quite a mild one right a mild one with with lots of cream and

the yogurt in it so it's a bit more fattening than your average calorie so

that particular one isn't very healthy now I bought these they were on offer

today really yes they're normally around 2 pounds 20 a jar ok but they were on

offer today for a pound a pound each so I got it a dozen of them twelve of them

today so keep them in there and so you know saving a lot of money I tell you

what they used to do there's only I'm being very pedantic here pedantic

there's another word but antique means very picky a person who picks the fine

details or the faults out of everything when they first brought these curries

out years ago they used to have 425 grams per jar and then they shrunk the

jars down and charge the same price well there's a lot nowadays you know you know

the same thing happens to chocolate bars as well they keep making chocolate bars

or boxes of chocolates smaller and smaller and every time they do that they

don't reduce the price so they make the product smaller but they don't lower the

price they charge exactly the same thing it really annoys me yes and the problem

is that's not quite enough for - the jar isn't quite big enough for two whereas

previously it was so I have to bulk it out with some lentils I had a bit more

of my own curry powder into it and well you'll see what else I add in to turn

this from what is what they're already very good but I added some extras to it

to spice it up even more so mr. Steve uses this particular mix but also he

adds his own little magic ingredients as well right I'm going to keep my eye eye

on those lentils because they boil Oh very easily I've just realized I'm

starting to sound like Loyd Grossman this is how Loyd Grossman talk hello my

name is Lloyd Grossman I don't think anyone will know I don't

think anyone will know who Loyd Grossman is but anyway he used to be on

television all the time but nowadays he nowadays he

is a celebrity Shep

okay so while those lentils are cooking I'm going to prepare some other things

so mr. steve has just rinsed the rice we really do like sweet potatoes so much

just one just one Oh Vidya yes

the lentils are very prone to boiling over the lentil so I shall just peel

this sweet potato like so and I like to cook the sweet potatoes in with the rice

rather than cooking them separately because then you'll retain a lot of the

goodness that comes out of it and it saves a saucepan retain I love that word

retain if you retain something you keep it back you keep it back you preserve it

you retain those in with the rice like that and there we go oh yes there we go

and so that in with the rice and I'll put those on for a slow cook

and I'm also going to educate rid of the rubbish here I'm gonna put some extra

tomatoes in well but I'm also going to rinse the tomatoes to get rid of the

pesticides which you might think sounded strange this is something that Steve

does a lot actually he does it all the time so this is something Steve does he

always he rinses everything and I mean everything in vinegar even his

strawberries when he has strawberries he even does does it with the strawberries

so he puts the strawberries on vinegar because he he thinks it will get rid of

all the horrible additives and pesticides that are on the vegetables

and also on the fruit it does this is a mixture of water vinegar and salt and

then I just five minutes soak any fruit or vegetable well not all fruit and

vegetables but ones that I think are going to be prone to collecting the

pesticides and like strawberries things like that strawberries and I like to

wash tomatoes strawberries and dududu with blackberries Steve yes fruits any

any fruit that could have been sprayed so most fruit most fruit I don't bother

with if it's not organic if it's organic then I don't bother but if it's not

organic I will always rinse it just in case there are a few pesticides lurking

on the outside you might notice here by the way that these potatoes these sweet

potatoes are organic can you see on there can you see they are actually

organic sweet potatoes so with the rice and so was

are the lentils now let's see how the lentils are doing because they need a

stir so I've got my wooden spoon now I'm gonna give them a stir so I'm going over

here right so the lentils nicely cooked

so next stage is to add the curry sauce boom no we're going off so I'll put that

in yeah swing it out with a bit of water

because just to get all the lovely juice out of there a bit of quick stir I'm

slaving away in the kitchen slaving away it's an expression often used to

describe someone who's working hard in the kitchen some garlic granules because

I can't be bothered to buy fresh garlic and cut it up that is better but this is

a substitute so I'll add some garlic granules I will add the fish so I've got

mackerel in spring water which I've drained and I'm going to add those in

now is this some I'll say one thing Steve it's very fishy the smell but

macro is one of the smelliest fish it's very smelly but in that curry it's

very nice and it's very healthy because it's got lots of healthy fats in it

mackerel and we've just got a small tin in there so we've got some protein hmm

and I shall bring that to the boil I will add my tomatoes which are now

happily devoid of pesticides devoid that's a great word if something is

divor it is it is without it is without it it

is devoid there's already a lot of tomatoes in this curry sauce but I like

to add some fresh tomatoes as well just for a bit of added flavor so we can

leave that to cook but when it's come to the boil and just before we serve it I

will have this as a final addition and it's my favorite it's garam masala we

saw that earlier because earlier earlier we were talking all about

Somozas Somozas at the start of today's livestream we talked about Somozas and i

said that mr. Steve likes to put that in his baked beans I add this to everything

it's absolutely delicious its aromatic spicy it's not it's not strong in the

sense that it's it's hot it's just very flavorsome so you can add this to

everything oh I just love the smell of it so I'm going to add that in in about

five minutes time

for those who have just joined us hello this is mr. Steve and mr. Duncan on a

Friday night but for those who are worried that this is not a live stream

don't worry it is we will be back live in a few moments but at the moment we

are cooking curry if you just want to cook some fish and give it a little bit

of flavor you can just sprinkle this on to fish to meat to anything just to give

it a bit of a bit of an Indian sort of curry flavor but without making it too

hot I love it and it's lovely in baked beans that is one of the problems with

curry because some people don't like it too spicy but they do like the flavor

and the aroma of the spices but they don't want it too hot they don't want

the curry to burn their mouth out yes and what makes a curry hot of course is

the chili and that's what makes it very hot whereas this is everything but it

doesn't have the chili in it so it gives you the flavor without the heat spice so

I'm ready to add the garam masala now because this is all cooked the fish is

already cooked anyway the lentils are cooked so I'm going to add this in

I need a teaspoon

as we said earlier mr. coop here we go here comes the garam masala only a

teaspoon because otherwise you can't taste anything else

oh all the smell coming off there absolutely my mouth is watering at the

prospect of eating this lentil fish curry and as I speak the rice is coming

to the boil and we've got the sweet potatoes in there as well cooking with

them so that's coming to the boil so I think that's about it we're nearly ready

to eat now give it ten minutes oh no I'm gonna go ahead and do the exercise mr.

Steve is going upstairs he almost forgot there did you see that he forgot that he

had to go and do his exercises upstairs don't worry you won't see that right bye

for now I'm back in the studio or are you gonna film is eating this we'll just

carry on shall we so we will be back in a moment at the dinner table so we will

actually be sitting at the dining table ready to eat the meal right now through

the wonders of modern editing so there it is our Friday night curry is ready to

eat and now we will return you back to the studio

no mr. Steve that's my potato

okay so um thank you for watching that video mr. duncan and i cooking a curry

on friday now as you can see we are outside now mr. duncan has used that

camera brought it outside while he was playing that pre-recorded video and

pitched the camera see we used that word earlier he's pitched the camera outside

here on this piece of grass so mr. Duncan is at this very moment walking

from his studio over to this camera now we had some lovely comments I was

reading the comments coming in about us cooking the curry and I've learned

something I didn't know that garam meant salt so thank you for that whoever said

that I didn't know it meant salt but I do like to add the garam masala in just

before the curry is ready just to give it a few little extra a little bit of

extra flavor Oh mr. Duncan's coming now and it's very

exciting we're all very upbeat because we're outside now mr. Steve is very

excited he always likes to go outside during the live stream so I'm very

pleased to see that everything is still work is it he's sure we're still on I

think I think we're still on are we still on I think so so now we are

outside live and yes apparently garam means salt I just said that however I

didn't I did I didn't hear that you see so that's my excuse no there is an

interesting word in the English language before I get on to the new words because

this week many new words have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary but

edie yes the OED of course and what particular word that I do like now it

isn't a new word but it's blag blag have you heard of this word Steve blag blag

ah yes it means that you're sort of faking it in a way yes you normally you

black when you are trying to get into a place

or two to do something by slightly exaggerating your abilities or maybe the

things that you've done in the past so blag B L a G

it means you talk your way into a situation and sometimes people when they

are trying to get employment they might flag their way into a job by changing

some of the details of their experience in the past so some people say it's

lying but I don't think it's necessarily lying sometimes you might exaggerate

your abilities or maybe you change things to give you give yourself more of

a chance of doing something so the word is blag blag so there we go means you've

got a gift with words in promoting yourself above what you're probably

capable of so here we go some new words have been added to the oxford english

dictionary this week that it's true yes so here we go the first word this has

been added this week I'm sure a lot of people will recognize this word there it

is a shopping e shopping I do lots of that mr. Duncan yes so this is a new

word that's been recently added to the Oxford Dictionary and a shopping means

what what does it mean do you think Steve shopping online yes shopping on

the internet many people now do e shopping e shopping so there it is the

word shopping it's a new word and it has recently been added to the Oxford

Dictionary this week yes this week here's another one oh this is a good one

again a very modern one can you see it can you see the word

there it is I don't know what you've done there I'm just making sure that we

still got people watching is that's nice so there's another word co-parenting now

this is a very modern very trendy word now this means that in a family unit the

mother and father both take charge of raising the children so maybe sometimes

the father will stay at home and maybe sometimes the the wife will stay at home

so they are co-parenting they are sharing the responsibility of being a

parent it like cohabiting it is a bit doing something together being together

Co gloves on so when you use Co as a prefix it means to do something together

in a group in a group next one yes baby can you see it and this is an

interesting word it's called can you see it hangry hangry now do you know what

this means Steve is it like hungry yes it is it is when you are it is when you

feel hungry and also angry at the same time so because you are so hungry you

want your food straight away so we can say that you are hangry hangry

is it also sometimes when you're hungry I get very irritable and I'm hungry and

sort of argumentative because I think my blood Sugar's drop is that the same

thing it is you say I'm hangry when I'm just getting bit bitter and a bit nasty

because I'm I'm just hungry yes when you're when when mr. Steve gets hangry

it means that he's very hungry and also he feels angry because he he hasn't

eaten yet just hold the other end of that

want to now just hold the end go on grab hold of it both hands so there it is can

you see that one no mansplain mansplain does anyone know

what mansplain means man splain anyone know there it is it's a word that's been

used a lot recently and it has been added to the oxford dictionary this week

mansplain mansplain is an occurrence I don't know why I keep doing that yeah

after this it's going up on its own I know it disappears off the screen yes

don't worry about it oh dear mansplain mansplain is to talk in a very

patronizing way so if you talk to someone in a very patronizing way as if

they are a child normally this refers to a man talking to a woman so he explains

things in a very simplistic and almost patronizing way so mansplain mansplain

so if I was if you were a woman I would say oh no I do you want a drink you want

something to drink do you feeling thirsty yeah or how does a how does this

mobile phone work and maybe you go oh it's it's pictures that come from the

sky they come from the sky and then they go into your magic box that you look at

yes and that's mansplaining so the man will simplify things too much man

explaining yes and splain so mansplain is a combination of man and explain I

bet I bet if a woman takes her car to a garage for servicing I bet the men there

but you would how they describe the car to always assume a woman doesn't know

anything about a car yes and that's what it is the assumption that a woman does

not understand the thing you are talking about yes very good okay I think we'll

just do one more and then we'll have to go because we are now doing Oh

time and it's cold out here I can't believe that this is still working there

we go so this one is ransomware ransomware and

of course we have been talking about computers today and there is a very

relevant one very relevant word ransomware refers to a virus that goes

into your computer and it locks your computer and what happens is someone

will demand money from you to make the computer work again so they hold they

hold your computer to ransom they take over your computer and then you have to

give them money and then they will let your computer work again perhaps that's

why your computer's not working perhaps someone will send you an email and

demand money to make it work again

sabotage just maybe puter maybe maybe I'm being held to ransom oh yes

maybe mind you no one wants your old computer Bella says malicious software

yes malicious software malicious or harmful or something that is done with

nasty and negative intent there it is and one more this one's for mr. Steve

this one I think this one is very suitable for Steve self-diagnosis that's

miss there's a new word it's a new yes of course it is yes self hobby is self

diagnosis has now become a common word in fact it's become so common it has now

earned its place in the oxford dictionary self diagnosis is when is

when a person tries to work out what is wrong with them themselves and by that

they mean normally going on to the internet again the internet so they go

onto the internet and they go to these websites that talk all about illnesses

and then they put their symptoms into the computer and then the

computer start saying you have five minutes to live

and then the person starts panicking actually doctors I know this for a fact

a lot of doctors now are sick and tired of patients going in and telling them

what they think is wrong with them yes because they've already gone online and

put their symptoms in and they think they've got this particular problem yeah

so what happens it can tired of it what what happens is the patient goes to the

doctor and then the patient tells the doctor what is wrong with them exactly

and then the patient will say yes doctor RI we'll need some aspirin and some

painkiller antibiotics and then the doctor goes wait a minute I'm the doctor

not you well I I went on the Internet you see and I I did I did some self

diagnosis so I diagnosed my own illness and this is something a lot of people do

nowadays the Internet is very good for looking at facts about subject but when

it comes to a a very complicated broad-based subject like medicine it's

very difficult unless you've got the the background knowledge to work out what's

wrong with you yes self diagnose very dangerous thing

to go on the Internet yes so try and diagnose your problem well of course it

causes a lot of stress and anxiety because you might think you have

something wrong with you something very serious but in fact you don't so maybe

you think that the headache you have is brain cancer or maybe you are about to

have a brain hemorrhage or something I think you did that once didn't you a

common thing that people do is that they the symptoms of indigestion can often be

confused with the symptoms of having a heart attack yes and a lot of people get

that wrong and then rushing to the hospital having a heart attack

apparently one of the most common things that people go to hospital for they

arrive at the hospital and they have chest pains but quite often if you have

pain in your chest sometimes not always it can be just indigestion although

having said that it is always a good idea if you have pains if you have pains

your chest you should always call the doctor or go to a hospital if you have

pains in your chest right okay that's it I think we will leave it there because

we are way over time what time is it now let's have a look I D it is now 20 past

4 it's still light and of course it's still light so we thought we would come

outside to spend a little time with you so I hope you've enjoyed today's

livestream we are going now it is absolutely freezing it's so cold make a

nice hot cup of cocoa yeah I think we made a lot of people feel very hungry

that's good cooking that curry yes yes we had a lovely curry the other night

and I hope you enjoyed watching and I hope you enjoyed sampling your own

recipe yes so maybe later today you will go into the kitchen and make your own

curry so I hope you enjoy it I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed ah it's

time to go mr. Steve parting parting is such sweet sorrow we will be here next

week next Sunday and also during the week we will do a short livestream on

Wednesday and we will tell you what is happening with the computer I'm amazed

that the computer has worked today we only got one camera plugged in what

we're only using one camera so we can't do very much

well mr. Duncan was playing the video of us doing the curry this same camera that

you saw was inside he walked out with it pitched it here on the graph I was it

all in I was working like a madman I was working like a like a madman trying to

get all this setup so this is the same camera the same microphone is in the

studio I have to run out here and set everything up that's great fun crazy

we are very upbeat about all this today your live stream is very informative

have a great week and thanks for the two hours thank you very much

Alice for that also long Nguyen says thank you very much

and also thank you you are awesome says Louise Thank You Lewis for that we

are going we are going now say your good-byes mr. Steve goodbye everyone and

hopefully I'll see you in the week if I've got time I might be coming back

from a rehearsal and then I can just do a quick half an hour yes it is last

Thursday last Thursday so goodbye to everybody have fun learning English and

see you all soon see you later mr. Steve is going to make a very delicious hot

cup of tea now because my hands can you see my hands they are turning purple if

he's so cold out here today so it's time to go it is now 20 minutes past 4:00 and

I will see you next week and of course don't forget a little surprise

livestream during the week as well this is mr. Duncan in the birthplace of

the English language saying I hope you've enjoyed today's livestream

indoors and outdoors as well see you during the week and of course see you

next week two o'clock UK time and of course you know what's coming next...

finally before I go I must say...

ta ta for now 8-)

This NASA Mission Uses Cold War Planes To Map The World's Largest Island - Duration: 3:49.

This is inside the cockpit of NASA's operation IceBridge, the largest airborne survey of

Earth's polar ice ever flown.

The scientists aboard are hunkered down in their command stations, gathering critical

measurements on thinning sea ice, shrinking glaciers, and calving ice shelves.

Flying in 8-12 hour shifts, multiple days a week, they're taking the vital signs of

the Arctic.

It's an unprecedented, birds eye view of what climate change actually looks like.

Temperatures in the Arctic have been rising about to two to three times the global average.

So over the next century, we expect Greenland to experience a lot warmer temperatures, continue

to melt, and then continue to raise sea level.

That's Nathan Kurtz, a project scientist with Operation IceBridge.

He's part of a team of over 30 glaciologists, engineers, and pilots who survey the massive

ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland on this flying laboratory.

We probably do 60 to 70 flights per year.

Then once we're up in the air, we transit at high altitude but then we'll descend down

to low altitude, so 1500 feet.

The P-3 in particular is meant to fly low and slow.

First constructed during the cold war to track Russian submarines, the P-3 is an ideal reconnaissance

aircraft for polar surveys.

The crew will follow a meticulously planned flight path, with specific targets in mind.

The goal is to create a consistent and continuous data stream of the changing ice, bridging

the gap between the decommissioned ICESat satellite and the ICESat-2 that's expected

to launch in 2018.

Hence the name, Operation IceBridge.

The P-3 is outfitted with a suite of instruments -- and one of the most critical is the laser

altimeter.

It shoots out tiny green pulses straight at the ice sheet.

Along with laser altimeters, there are radar instruments, GPS, gravimeters, and of course,

a digital camera system that captures images of the terrain below.

We're measuring how thick the ice is in total, and then mapping what the rock structure is

underneath the ice.

These tools reveal what's invisible to the naked eye, transforming Greenland's massive

ice sheet into a 3D picture with incredible detail.

We're trying to figure out how the surface changed year to year to year, and so Helheim,

what's called the calving fronts of the end of the glacier, has been retreating for quite

a while.

And out of the nearly ten years of flying zigzagging patterns across the poles, the

data points to an irreversible trend.

We've had large changes in sea ice, and this is changing the albedo of the surface

so sea ice is bright, reflects a lot of the sun's energy, but as the Arctic has been warming

we've been seeing a decrease in the amount of ice, and that in turn exposes open ocean,

which absorbs more of the sun's energy.

This feedback loop is what keeps scientists like Nathan coming back to the poles for month-long

missions.

Retreating sea ice will increase global temperatures, which leads to widespread surface melting

of Greenland's ice sheet.

The amount of ice that's on Greenland, if it were all to melt could raise sea level

by something like 8 meters, so over 20 feet.

Basically, Nathan wants to arm the people in charge of making huge environmental decisions

with the facts.

And all of the data collected during each flight mission is actionable.

They help climate scientists more accurately predict how the poles could change in the

future; because even though the ice looks peaceful from above, there's a whole other

story underneath.

Inside a 'Culture of Abuse' at U.S.A. Gymnastics | NYT - Duration: 3:12.

"I started gymnastics in 1976.

I loved it.

And I had a certain aptitude for it.

I was a national team member for eight years.

And I was a national champion in 1986.

I think it's dangerous to assume that we

have a one guy problem with Nassar and that with him gone,

the sport is now safe,

and these girls are now safe."

More than 250 women have come forward

to say they were sexually abused by former U.S.A. Gymnastics doctor

Larry Nassar.

The scandal has highlighted what many gymnasts

say is a culture of abuse within U.S.A.G.

"The standard and the expectation if you want to win

is an environment that is rife with physical

and emotional abuse.

And I think this creates the conditions where

sexual abuse can occur."

U.S.A. Gymnastics has complaint files on 54 coaches

from 1996 to 2006, according to documents obtained

by The Indianapolis Star.

For decades, U.S.A.G. empowered itself

to investigate complaints before deciding whether

to contact law enforcement.

Former U.S.A.G. president Steve Penny once said in a deposition:

"To the best of my knowledge, there

is no duty to report if you are a third party to some allegation."

These gymnastics coaches were accused of sexual abuse.

Here's how U.S.A. Gymnastics handled their cases.

Don Peters led the U.S. women's team

to a record breaking eight medals at the 1984 Olympics.

"The head coach of the American women's team

is Don Peters, one of the most respected men in gymnastics."

In 2011, three gymnasts told The Orange County Register

that Peters had sex with them when

they were teenagers in the '80s.

Peters was banned for life by U.S.A. Gymnastics

two months after the report was published.

He was also removed from the Sports Hall of Fame.

Marvin Sharpe was the U.S.A. Gymnastics 2010

coach of the year.

U.S.A.G. got a detailed account of abuse involving Sharp in 2011,

but it wasn't until a 14-year-old

came forward in 2015 that the federation contacted police.

Sharpe was arrested in August 2015

and committed suicide in his jail cell one month later.

Stephen Infante was a popular coach in New England gymnastics.

In 1997, gymnasts accused Infante of having sex with them when

they were teenagers.

After an internal investigation

U.S.A. Gymnastics barred Infante for life,

but the organization didn't go to the police,

and Infante continued coaching girls at gymnastics summer camps.

Infante was charged with raping one of his former athletes

a decade later and was convicted in 2010.

Last year, a nonprofit called the U.S. Center for SafeSport

was put in charge of preventing and handling abuse

in Olympic sports,

and in the wake of the Nassar scandal

the entire U.S.A. Gymnastics board has been forced to resign.

Many athletes and victims of abuse

say these actions are too little, too late.

And some wonder if it's truly enough

to transform a culture that failed

to protect its young women.
