Hey welcome to Rona's Roadshow ! This is
Joshua
Joshua. No 1 grandson.
And I'm the groovy granny who's taking him out.
Where are the grandads? That's what I wonder...
The plan was to scope out my 1st 4WD club trip
for the Getaway 4WD Club
and...
to take my grandson
4 wheel driving.
2 birds with 1 stone. Come on Josh. Let's go!
Here's Josh Learning how to use the pressure guage
and he's just letting them out.
We're taking these down before we head up the road
We're on the track now
This is the Jarrahdale railway line
We're going to follow all the way up to Jarrahdale.
That was my Joshie driving just then. He's just learning.
How did that go? Pretty good.
What do you reckon you're good at
and what could you improve on?
Probably improve on my starts and
getting up the hills. Yeah.
I will admit he's my favourite grandson,
he's my only grandson!
But I do think
his road positioning was superb
Rebel Rouser (sax music) by Sax and the Single Girl
Josh! Say that again. No bloody way
Now that was one side of a very steep slope.
Now here's another. Get a load of that!
If we're keen..! Josh said he's going to do it next time.
laughter
Don't laugh Rona. It could be your car he's in!
Looks like a Subaru Imprezza.
And there's another one over there.
Oh my gawd!
Let's have a look.
I haven't seen a wreck like this since I been on the
Canning Stock Route!
Do you reckon it was a 4WD?
Oh...no
You don't reckon love?
I reckon someone's brought it out here to burn it.
To burn it? Yes. Look. That looks like a 4WD Josh
Wow. All burnt out.
The fact that all the tyres are gone
makes me think that it's been stripped.
What do you think?
Same with that other one too
But now a brief word on the importance of
correct packing.
My favourite water container
4 wheel driving...bang! Hole straight in it.
So, 9 litres of water gone.
And i am looking for a new one of these. Damn.
We drove on a bit further
and it was at this point we thought to ourselves
you know what?
I think we've overshot the runway!
Rebel Rouser song by Sax and the Single Girl
Too right we'd overshot the runway!
This is the Albany Highway!
Quick correction. We're heading back to Jarrahdale
in search of the best burgers in Western Australia!
Rebel Rouser Song
Lunch was awesome. Best burgers.
Fabulous chips.
Time to go though. We're in search of a swim.
Diesel motor
Ok let's go and have a sticky (look).
I was so excited. I haven't been to Scarp Pool in years.
Here's the toilets
That's where the cars park.
And through there. Don't know if you can see it.
That's where people used to camp all along up here
SIGH!
Josh, time for a swim
Isn't it fortunate that nature never disappoints us?
Well, there's plenty of water down here
at Scarp Pool. This is the main pool,
the bottom one.
There's 3 pools.
Here's No 1 grandson coming through the middle pool
We've been in the top one.
He's coming down through the pools
and I'm going to walk down.
I'm walking down with you know who.
That Lucy, she's no water dog.
Here we are at the bottom pool
Young Lucy has made it through
Beautiful
It's got a nice beach entry
Nice sandy bottom
which beats the rocks and
logs and snags.
So that's it folks, i'm going in.
No camping at Scarp Pool.
Nanga is packed,
so forget that one too.
So me and Josh had to get moving
We're in search of a campsite for tonight.
So what we're going to do... Look for a track
Yeah we're looking for a track
because we gotta camp somewhere
Whoa! What have we here?
A side track! Hopefully going down to the river
Diesel motor running
Lovely out here
and it's looking pretty gorgeous we have to say...
Oh oh! Spoke too soon!
Gawd! we've come to the end of the line.
Damn! Get the chainsaw out. (Laughter)
Going to see how far down it is, Josh?
Do you want me to come with you?
Yes. I'll go and get Lucy. Hang on.
We were just too far from the river so we did a 28 pt turn
on that tiny skinny little track,
with all that branches and everything overhanging,
and back we went to the main drag
We were on the hunt again
and guess what we found
Background chatter
Oh wow! did you see the kangaroos? Yes.
Oh yeah there's one.
Yeah they're having a dust up alright
Look at them all!
They're in the mood for love I think
Background chatter
Now these hills are deceptive.
They's a lot steeper than they look.
Diesel motor running
When you're doing the other ruts
your back wheel came off the ground.
I bet it did.
Bet you any money that's the river throught there
Yes!
Look out! Dead end.
We have come down some hell tracks, mate
but there's the river.
The only thing is poor me and Josh
have to carry everything down
It's fairly steep down here.
Josh wanted me to drive down here
and I said no because we are on our own.
What a stunning place Josh.
Look. Yeah.
What's left of it.
Josh pointed out a rope swing.
It had been chopped down.
What a world. You get some dummy
who jumps in without checking the depth
becomes a paraplegic and then we all get punished.
For goodness sakes. Anyway, we had a wonderful dinner
Set up a beautiful camp. We were in bed early.
Those mozzies were absolutley ferocious!
Early morning at our beautiful spot.
Listen to those birds.
Lucy slept well.
She's a bit stiff
from all the climbing
up and down to the car.
Put the kettle on. Most important
There's Sleeping Beauty.
Have a cup of tea before he gets up.
Seeing as Joshie was still asleep I thought I'd go
and explore that other track
Just check out the ruts in this thing
We could have made it down but...
being that we're on our own
I decided to err on the side of caution
and not do it.
So we ended up going down that track there
It's a lot smoother
And down the bottom of the track
which we called Rut Road
Looks like this is a bit of a river crossing
So it can't be too deep then.
I may go and have a look at that
Just walked it
It's pretty high in the middle
Just under a metre.
but anyway it's all blocked off over the other side
so don't bother folks.
Ok let's get back to camp. Time for my 2nd cuppa.
Just made the cuppa
Here comes the little prince
How do you like this? Didn't have a table so I thought
this is a good idea. Just use a bit of a cardboard box
Adds a little focal point, you know what I am saying?
There you go
There's the river...nice
Now I don't know about you folks but when I'm out here
in the ferocious wilds
I always feel safer having the attack dog on patrol.
Here's Lucy on guard
at the camp.
Now as you can see Josh's tent
is a little bit skewiff (twisted)
It's time for another one
They only cost about $40 folks. Stop being stingey.
I actually like this little one. Dead easy to put up.
I don't waste my money on those mozzie tents (Mozzie Domes)
Nearly $200. You can buy one of these and
its got a fly so you can put the fly on if you want
and it's quicker to put up.
Taking my grandson away was
a treat in itself
but I also had another bonus!
Look what I found in it. I was absolutely stoked.
I haven't used this tent since I've been in the Kimberley
taking tours.
That was not 2017, that was 2016
and here's this watch that I've been
looking for and I'd given up.
It is amazing what you find in tents.
Yo! We're back from the wilds!
And we even named our own new road. What's it called?
Rut Road. Rut Road.
Ruts 6 foot deep. I'm exaggerating
But the Jarrahdale Track is fabulous
We found a great camping spot
down at Dwellingup didn't we? On the river.
Complete with mosquitoes.
But brilliant
Out of 10 how would you rate it.
8 or 9
8 or 9! Gawd he's a hard marker.
Now personally I would rate that trip an an 11 out of 10
Pretty good.
