Hi I'm Mike.
Calves are being born all around the ranch.
Today I take you on guided tour of the calving season experience on our Wyoming life.
Welcome to our Wyoming Life.
Years ago, my wife and I left our corporate jobs to come help out on the family ranch,
and the day we left the city we knew our lives were changing forever.
For the good or the bad, we didn't quite know at the time.
If you would like to come along with us and explore the ranch life, make sure you subscribe,
we are going to give you the chance to escape your ordinary and see a life that you may
shock you, may make you laugh, sometimes cry but in the end, it will definitely make you
think.
When we came here it was a new beginning for us, we started our lives over and one thing
we had never dealt with, being the city folks that we were by then, was how many things
in our new life would start over again every year.
Life on a ranch is a cycle, the same major events happen over and over again, every year,
it's the stuff that happens in between that makes it unpredictable and interesting.
You cut hay in the summer, you feed hay all winter and, in the spring, new life emerges.
Whether its new grass growing in the pasture or new calves filling the ranch.
Calving season extends here from March until the beginning of June.
We start calving heifers early and today I am proud to say that each and every one of
them has now had a calf, but in no way does that mean that we are done.
Our older moms, the cows, are now having their calves, at the rate of about 3 or 4 per day.
Heifers require a lot of supervision during calving, the cows not so much.
They have done this a few times and most of them are well versed at what to do and how
to do it.
The only time we really have problems with cows is because of weather and today, its
going to be a beautiful day for calving.
Each day of calving starts with checking the cows shortly after sunup.
The cows are now confined to a little over 400 acres, we call it the home pasture because
it is close to home and if we do have to get a cow to the corrals, or the barn we can do
it.
This 400-acre pasture is far from flat, it contains a few hills, a couple of valley and
a few ponds, all great places for a cow to hide while having her calf.
The goal of checking cows is to find calves that have recently been born, those calves
we will take a look at, make sure they are able to get up and walk on their own and we
will also tag their ears with a numbered ear tag.
That number will be associated with them their entire time here on the ranch, it allows us
to keep track of them, their health, their weight, who their mom is and any other information
that we may need to keep them healthy while they are here.
It may seem like a bunch of pointless driving around, but a cow off by herself is a easy
indicator of a somebody who has either just had a calf or is getting ready to give birth.
50 to a 100 years ago, these cows would have been on their own.
Cows and calves would be out to pasture on the free range to fend for themselves.
If they had difficulty during calving, more than likely the calf or sometimes even the
cow would have died.
If storms rolled through, calves would freeze down, they would become hypothermic and some
would never get up again.
Now days, rancher take a much more hands on approach to calving.
Anytime day or night, you will find ranchers, hired hands and family members out checking
cows and if there is a problem, its going to be much more likely to be dealt with fast
and usually with a better outcome than if the cows were on their own.
The cows may not see it this way, but we are their lifeline and being able to check calves
and cows and staying on top of them as they calve makes for a better life for them and
the ranch.
Normally there is nothing to hard about it, you just have to have some nerve about you.
Getting out of the gator and facing a 1200 to 1500-pound protective mom can be a little
bit intimidating.
You can't show fear, they can sense it and they will use it to their advantage.
Each and every calf that is born we try to be there as soon as possible, we get in and
get done what we need to and get out.
Leaving mom and baby to bond.
Letting the calf get a drink and move on with their new life.
Calves are tagged in the order of their birth and although we run a few different colors
of ear tags on the ranch, red for ranch cows, and purple, pink and blue for the kid's
cows, we keep track of them just the same.
And occasionally we find a calf with no mom around.
These may seem like the easy ones, but I'd rather have a mom here staring at me in the
face.
This ones' mom has probably wandered off to eat, we cant pass up the opportunity to
tag it, but because we don't know who the mom is it's a bit of gamble.
Odds are it's a ranch cow, so we tag it with a red tag.
The calf gets up and its gone moving up over the hill.
This causes a few problems, because mom, probably knows where she left her calf and she is going
to come back looking for it and its going to be gone.
But we don't know who mom is yet, so we will head back out until mom reveals herself
and tag a couple more newborns.
Here's a nice surprise, see if you can recognize this cow.
This is Bambi, Mackenzie's pet cow.
Her mom died while having her and she was bottle raised and is probably the friendliest
cow on the ranch.
Mackenzie will be thrilled to know that Bambi has had her calf, but lets wait to tell her,
in fact lets bring her out here in a bit and show her ourselves.
Before wrapping up our first check this morning, lets head back and see what our lone calf
is up to and see if mom is looking for it yet.
At almost the exact spot where we tagged her calf, mom is now back and looking.
Number 117 and now our goal is to reunite mom and calf.
But first we have to find the calf.
Calves are great at hiding, especially in the sage brush so the only way to really find
them is to go for another drive.
We know the little one couldn't have gone far and we drive by calf after calf, looking
for his number.
Eventually though, we find him, hiding in some sagebrush.
Let's load him up in the gator and take him back to mom.
Where they both seem happy, and he left me a nice little surprise in the gator.
That's the reward for helping out.
Done with this check, its back to the shop, to clean up this mess.
Then its out to feed the cows, we feed after we check for new babies because when breakfast
comes out, a lot of the cows will drag their new calves into the herd to eat.
This will create more problems than leaving them separated off and checking babies, now
everyone can come get a bite to eat.
We will check cows multiple time during the day, usually every 4 hours or so, unless we
know that we have a cow in labor, like this cow, who is off by herself.
She didn't come into eat and we can tell by looking at her that She will have her calf
anytime now.
We will give her about an hour or so and come back and check on her and see how she is doing.
In between, we can knock out some other chores.
In the barn are our two healthy bottle calves.
Andy and our yet unnamed calf.
Both of these boys were part of a pair of twins and because a cow can sometimes have
trouble taking care of a set of twins, especially out on pasture we decided that they would
be better off with us.
They will eat about 4 of these bottles per day, about every 4 hours as well, so that
works out nice.
In the shop, we have another problem calf, lucky number 13.
He has been battling scours, a case of bovine diarrhea, which has left him dehydrated and
weak.
We are in the process of nursing him back to heath and because he can't drink a bottle
on his own, he gets the pleasure of being fed by an esophageal feeder, passing a tube
through his mouth, down his esophagus and directly into his stomach, really not a pleasure
for either of us.
After a quick break, and some playtime with the kids its time to head out and check again.
This time we get the girls to go with us and we can spring Mackenzie's surprise on her.
We are going to take a little treat of some extra cake for Bambi as well and off we go.
First though we stop by our cow that we knew what is labor and she has had her calf.
One quick tag later, and we are off to find Bambi.
Just over 60 calves now on the ranch, at with our 3 sets of twins we have had we are now
well over a 100% survival rate.
I cant tell you just getting the chance to give our kids experiences like these make
giving up the dog eat dog world of corporate America all that sweeter.
I never would have guessed I would be here, and now I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
Just like these calves, we were given a fresh start at life, a life we wouldn't change
for anything and one we are glad we can share with you.
I hope you continue to explore the ranch life with us and escape the ordinary.

Comparative: BMW Z3 and Boxster 986 - which one to choose? - Duration: 29:10.
Hello this is Piston Kirk!
In one of my previous videos,
whose link is in the description,
you could see that, for family reasons,
I ended up with two roadsters in my garage,
so here's the perfect opportunity to compare two of the most seductive cabriolets of the 90's
and find which car is the most interesting between the BMW Z3 and the Boxster 986
the rivalry between the BMW Z3 and the Boxster 986 is old
New or used, the press has often made comparative tests between its two great rivals.
So you're going to say : "Why make one more?"
Well ... Because most of these comparisons are focused on the price / performance ratio,
which makes less and less sense for a youngtimer.
Since these cars are technically outdated
and that few people will use them on a circuit,
our approach will be to see what are the strengths and weaknesses
in terms of comfort in everyday use.
But hey, before analyzing the practical aspects,
let's still do a little mechanical comparison to refresh our memory.
Point 1: Mechanics
Let's start with road holding
Although they are both powered
they have ABS
and that they came out the same year,
a gap separates them.
With its rear central engine,
the Boxster is a real kart that takes the curves as on rails,
while the grip of the rear axle of the Z3 on wet ground sometimes approaches that of
of a bar of soap.
I would like to add some nuances
because the BMW has, at least, the merit to warn you before completely losing its adherence,
which makes this car very fun to drive.
With respect to the Boxster, when you have reached the limit of adhesion,
it's often already too late to react
Fortunately, to overcome this problem,
both manufacturers offered (as an option)
electronic assistance.
To find out if the car you drive is equipped with this system,
you have to look at the switches in the center console of the dashboard.
On the BMW Z3, the switch is here.
If it is written on "ASC",
it's that you only have ABS and traction control.
On the other hand, if it is written "DSC", ie "Dynamic Stability Control",
you actually have ESP (ESC),
a much more rare option
but much more powerful to stay on the road.
On the Boxster, the switch that serves to disable the electronic control is here.
If you have a black cover with nothing written,
then, you only have ABS.
If you have a switch with written: "TC off"
then you have the option "Traction Control"
then you have the option "Traction Control"
In 2001, Porsche replaced this "Traction Control" with something a little better:
the "Pack Stability Managment", which is a kind of ESP (ESC),.
then the switch has changed its name,
to be called: PSM off.
It goes without saying that when it comes to safety,
these electronic systems are very usefull
and not only on circuit.
They can save you, even in common use
especially in rainy weather.
Moreover, for many journalists of the automotive press of the 90's
these options were strongly recommended.
If despite ABS and ESP you still end up in the wall,
you can count on the front and side airbags that equip both models.
In fact no...
It is true that the first years of production, from 1996 to 1998,
the Boxster did not have side airbags.
On the other hand, they were all equipped with a standard roll bar,
which was unfortunately not the case for the Z3
which proposed this security bar only as an option.
Now let's look at the engine,
in its beginnings in 1996,
the Z3 was equipped with 1.8L and 1.9L engines that had only 4 cylinders,
while a Boxster 2.5 L, output the same year, already had 6 cylinders.
In order to compete, in 1999,
BMW insert under the hood of its roadster a 6-cylinder in line,
but, chuttttt!
Shut up.
Listen...
The melodious roar of this engine has nothing to envy to that of the flat 6 of the Boxster
I hope you enjoyed this symphony
because with the anti-pollution standards that are getting ready,
we will soon have only half 6 cylinders.
But the sound is not everything,
In terms of power, what do we have?
Again, the Boxster takes the advantage.
The basic Z3 1.8 L had only 115 hp
while the 2.5 L Boxster started at 204 hp.
Although the Z3 weighs a little less heavy,
it was not enough to offset the weight / power ratio
which resulted in almost 3 seconds more at 0 to 100 km / h
To have a Z3 whose outperforms the Boxster the least powerful,
you have to look for the six cylinders from 2.8 L
However, in the 2000s, the Boxster also get a more powerful engines.
the Boxster S was equipped with a 3.2 L engine with 256 hp (260 hp between 2003 and 2004)
and at this level,
the only Z3 that can do better is the M version with 321 hp (but only 240 hp in the USA)
But hey, it's nice to speak about numbers, but it doesn't say anything about the pleasure of driving.
And here, I must admit that the flat 6 of the Boxster is distinguished by a great linearity in acceleration,
while on the Z3, you have to get high i rpm to find the power.
In comparison the engine of the Boxster gives the impression of never running out of power
which allows a greater flexibility in driving
which is particularly appreciable.
We have enough spoken mechanics.
Let's talk about the practical aspects
starting with one of the central points of these cars:
the opening of the roof
Point 2: The opening of the soft top
On the Boxster the electric roof is standard,
but to allow it to open, you must first pull the handbrake,
then, unlock the central handle of the roof,
then hold the switch down during the whole opening phase.
On the Z3 equipped with the electric roof option
it is not the hand brake that must be pulled,
but the brake pedal must be held down to allow the opening.
Then you have to unlock not one but two handles
Now open the roof and keep it ajar until you switch on the electric motor,
because there is a safety switch in the hinge.
Moreover, sometimes when the engine refuses to engage,
it's just that the switch is defective
Then, while keeping the roof slightly open with one hand,
use your other hand to press the opening switch.
On phase 1, this switch is located in front of you on the center console.
On phase 2, he was moved behind you between the two seat.
you must therefore look for it with your hand to activate it.
Frankly, I wonder how BMW engineers
have come to install it in a place that is not at all ergonomic.
So, on Phase 2, they asked us to put the clock in the middle.
The problem, as you can see, is that we have one less slot for the switches.
We will have to find a new location for the switch of the electric roof.
We could do like on the Z3 Coupe version
and put all the switches under the clock there.
Or, on the side in alignment with the window lift button.
Of course there is still room here.
Hold on !
What if we innovated?
We could do something new!
For example put it there behind.
Hmm ...
It's awesome !
Very creative!
Isn't it ?
But...
don't you think it's not very practical?
We see nothing...
and...
you have to twist your arm.
Maybe that's why nobody has done it yet.
Exactly,
we will be first!
We will be precursor!
Yeeees!
Validated!
Let's be honest,
the roof of the Z3 is a little less easy to open
and especially much less aesthetic.
While the Boxster offers a smooth and clean rendering,
the Z3 leaves the frame of the roof apparent.
It was so ugly,
that BMW sold as an option a leather cover for the roof
to smooth the lines of the car when the roof is open.
So, maybe it's very beautiful,
but it is long and boring to install.
But aesthetics is not the main fault of this roof,
there is a much more problematic design detail.
When you close the roof,
the two metal rods that are at its end
have a tendency to hang the rubber gasket from the windshield frame,
which ends by tearing it apart.
Then, as it is no longer waterproof,
the water trickles into the car.
In this case, the only solution is to replace the seal,
unfortunately it costs more than
350 euros at BMW
At this price, I preferred to repair it myself
with thread, a needle and some neoprene glue
Of course, it's not perfect,
but it's much better than before.
Even if in theory the opening of the boxster roof seems much more practical than that of the Z3,
it is necessary to put this judgment into perspective,
because they both have the same defect:
that is, a plastic window that forces you to comme out of the car in the middle of the opening phase
to tap the plastic window to prevent it from making a bad crease and breaking.
On this, the Z3 and the Boxster 986 are as boring one than the other
Well ... not all Boxster...
Ectually, Phases 2 produced from 2003 to 2004
had a new roof frame with a glass window.
So, we did not have to go out to tap the window.
The good news,
is that this new frame is compatible with Phases 1 produced from 2000 to 2002
and who are equipped with the new electrical system
that is, they have switches to open the front and rear trunk
and not handle with cable as on the first versions (1996 to 1999).
So, although it's great to be able to put a Phase 2 frame
the only small problem is that they are difficult and expensive to find used
As a result, some owners prefer to opt for a special sof top with a glass window
which is compatible with the Phase 1 frame
The disadvantage is that this window is slightly smaller than its plastic version.
The advantage is that it has an electric defrost
just plug in the hard-top plug witch is installed on all the Boxster.
If, despite all your precautions, you break the plastic window when opening the roof,
you must know that it is a real problem to repair it on the Boxster
because we have to dismantle all the soft top
which is long
complicated
and very expensive if a professional do it.
On the other hand, on the Z3, it's much simpler,
because the window is maintained by a simple zipper.
Since we only have the window to replace,
it is much cheaper and above all much faster.
Best of all, you can do it yourself without the help of a specialist.
Since prevention is better than cure
to limit the risk of breaking the window
and protect the soft top of the roof in winter,
you can use a hard-top that was available as an option on these two roadsters
Point 3: The hard-top
Personally, I love the hard-top of the Boxster because I find very elegant,
but if the manufacturer's one does not suit you,
know that there are two compatible versions inspired by the Cayman.
The first one is a normal hard-top.
The second version requires to remove the trunk to install it.
But in both cases, the result is very sporty.
We can also install a hard-top on a Z3,
but its integration with the car line is not as convincing.
It feels like the Z3 was wearing a helmet.
If you really want to hard roof on this model,
it is better to choose a Z3 coupe.
At least, the design of this car has the merit of not leaving indifferent:
you love it
or you hate it.
The only problem is that it is rather rare.
The coupe was produced with less than 18000 copies
against almost 280,000 for the roadster,
it's 15 times less.
It is therefore more difficult to find
and especially much more expensive than the convertible version of the Z3.
Well, we mentioned the hardtop, the opening of the roof but not its closure
so, before concluding this part, I would like to mention a little detail specific to the Boxster
on models from 2000
when we lock the roof it automatically goes up the windows.
So, sure, it's not essential,
but it's still a very practical function to use,
especially if you are in a hurry to close the roof because it starts to rain.
Well, come on, enough talk from outside it's time to enter inside.
Point 4: Driving comfort
When you think comfort, you think immediately: seat and driving position
and for having used these two roadster on long journeys,
I must admit that the Boxster has more comfortable seats.
We immediately feel that these seats were designed with the aim of driving on circuits.
You should know that these two roadster offered optional semi-bucket seats
which are perfect for those who have a sporty driving.
However, there is a small detail that bothers me about the Boxster:
If you are wide, it is better to chose standard seats
because semi-bucket seats tend to over-tighten at the ribs.
My wife loves them because she is narrower than me.
But personally,
even if I recognize that you are more stable on circuit,
I do not find them very pleasant over long distances.
About settings, the the back of the seat is electrical on all Boxster
On the other hand, to move from front to back, it is manual.
Curiously, on the Z3, it's exactly the opposite:
to move forward or backward the seat, it is electric
while to move the the back of the seat, it is manual.
In both cases,
it's a little frustrating that the entire seat is not electric
because it allows you finer adjustments.
Luckily on this point the boxster offers a solution by having optional
a complet electric seat with memory.
unfortunately it was so expensive
that finding a used Boxster equipped with it is a feat.
However, the heated seat is a relatively common option on both models.
It's not essential for a convertible,
but when you like to ride even in winter,
it is rather appreciable.
Well, adjusting the seat is good, but it's not the only thing that plays in the driving position.
There is also the steering wheel.
and at this level, the Boxster allows a deep adjustment,
but unfortunately not in height.
It's a pity, but it's still better than the Z3
which does not allow any adjustment at all
since the steering wheel is fixed.
Once installed, if you make a 1.80 meter like me,
it quickly appears that the roof of the Z3 is closer to your head than the one of the Boxster.
Clearly, when I ride with the roof closed,
I feel a bit crushed in Z3 while I do not have that feeling in the Boxster
Now that you have set the driving position, you can ride.
Then, what about the field of vision
On the Boxster, we have a more inclined windshield
and an frame on the windschied that is higher compared to the Z3,
On Boxster you have a wider field of vision than on the Z3.
Well, for now, the Boxster seems to be ahead of the Z3 at all levels.
But there is one point where the Z3 is much better than the Boxster:
the arm on the door.
Well, it may sound a little stupide said like that ...
but you have to know that puting the arm on the door in a comfortable position,
was part of the specifications of the Z3.
Why ?
Because its design was made for the American market.
And over there, driving a cabriolet with your arm on to the door,
it's almost an art of living.
Why do you think the amount of the door goes down?
it was to gain comfort.
On this point,
the Boxster is a little less good.
Of course we can put the arm on the door,
but as the door is a bit higher,
the angle your body makes with your arm being more important,
the position is a little less pleasant.
Point 5: Comfort of use and practical aspects
Let's start with the air conditioning,
you will tell me: "An air conditioning is useless."
Yeah sure, a cabriolet is made to ride with the roof open.
But, in fact... no!
In truth, it works especially for small trips.
On long journeys, when the sun beats,
After a while, I can not see the difference between my skin color and that of my jacket.
And there is also the problem of the highway.
Between the noise and the swirl of the wind, quickly, you only have one wish
it is to close the roof.
So once you have closed the roof in full sun,
it does not take long for the cabin to turn into an oven.
And in this specific moment, you realize that air conditioning is useful.
And that's why BMW offered (optional) manual air conditioning
while Porsche offered a slightly more advanced version
with an automatic regulation system,
where you just have to mark the temperature
which saves you from juggling all the time with air conditioning controls
This option was particularly appreciated,
since most Boxster are equipped.
Regarding the audio system,
on both models, the basic equipment integrated in the dashboard
is largely powerful enough to listen to the radio
even with the roof open.
But for music lovers,
both manufacturers offered as an option
additional speakers.
BMW housed them behind the seats,
and Porsche put a pair in the doors
and even offered an optional subwoofer on the back
In terms of accoustics, Porsche pushed the concept a little bit to far
since in their quest for the purity of sound,
they integratet on Phases 2 an optical fiber system,
which has the disadvantage of complicating things
when you want to change the car radio.
This excess of technology
does not make much sense
in a car where the sounds of the engine and the soft top are also present in the cabin
in fact the only time you can really enjoy the sound quality of your audio system,
it's when the engine is stopped.
Since we talk about the car radio, let's have a look on its antenna.
The Z3 has an apparent antenna located on the left rear fender.
Porsche opted for a much more discreet antenna
integrated into the windshield,
thus refining the design of the bodywork.
But en fact,
that's valid for the lucky ones who did not have the option "pre-equipment for the phone"
that is to say, that kind of small box to the right of the center console.
because in this case,
if you had a model from 1996 to 2000,
you ended up with a kind of antenna ersatz located at the top of the windshield.
whose aesthetic is ....
... not so good.
In case of small thirsts you will be surprised to find that the Z3 does not have cup holders,
which is rather odd for a model that was designed for the US market.
So, to correct this lack,
BMW created this accessory for the USA.
The Boxster has two removable cup holders
that it was necessary to unfold then to insert in the ventilation grid.
Since it was not cery convenient.
Porsche has commercialized a version with drawers on the American market,
then during the restyling of 2003,
they have serialized on all the Boxster
a retractable version much more practical.
Let's stay on practical aspects,
by now analyzing the storage
which are always useful to put caps, maps, GPS and notices.
Item 6: The storage spaces of the inside
On this point, apparently the Z3 is better than the Boxster
because it has a passenger-side glove box
The Boxster did not have one
but she will finally receive one the last two years of production
with the arrival of Phase 2 in 2003.
So having a glove box on the Z3 is a good thing,
the problem is that it is ridiculously small.
If you have a GPS that is not too thick,
you have a small chance of puting it inside.
I would be curious to see how they validate their ergonomic processes at BMW.
So, what are we testing today?
The glove box.
Validated!
Well, but what will do we do with that?
Slim...
it would be necessary to enlarge the glove box ...
No, it's too much work.
We'll put a little net here to tidy up.
But...
It's ugly.
It's not a problem, the driver will not see it.
But ... It's not going to bother the passenger's feet a bit?
yes, but it's not important
because the passenger is a woman.
Uh ... It's not a little macho?
Yes, completely ...
But we do not care!
It's a BMW: Bayerische Macho Wagon (Bavarian Macho car)
It's a car for men!
One might think that BMW's engineers finally realized that something was wrong,
since the Z3 sold in the USA
had a version of the glove box a little bigger than in Europe
in reality
if the design of the glove box has been reviewed
it is not to gain space,
but supposed to better protect passengers' legs in case of an accident
This American glove box model unfortunately has the double problem
to be less aesthetic, to creak
while offering minimal gain of space
which still do not allow to store in good conditions
the leather bloc containing the manual and the vehicle maintenance booklet
So,
on the American Z3 too, the side storage net was offered as an option.
On the early Boxster,
this leather bloc was stored in the pocket behind the back of the seat.
Since it was not always convenient to access,
in 2000, Porsche created a storage bin under the steering wheel
which will disappear in 2003
with the arrival of the glove box on Phases 2.
As a result, the pockets of the seat backs are released
which makes it possible to store flexible objects such as caps or scarves.
For objects that must remain easy to access
like bottles, scrapers, parking disks
or for fans of vintage stuff
CDs or paper road maps,
both roadster have in doors a storage bins.
Those of the Z3 are a little smaller and a little shallower than on the Boxster,
then, some objects a little too high can sometimes fall when you open the door.
Note also that on the Boxster
the armrest also serves as a cover,
which allows to hide these objects
giving a tidier and cleaner appearance to the cockpit
the small storage spaces of the Z3 located at the level of the handbrake and minimalist.
You can put at best: keys, a garage door remote
and a mobile phone.
The small storage spaces of the Boxster is better
since you have two much larger storage bins
located under the car radio.
You could even have optional CD dispenser drawers.
On the other hand, if you had a double DIN car radio,
you only had one storage bin left,
the other locations being occupied by the air conditioning controls unit.
For precious objects like:
sunglasses, GPS or the garage door remote control,
both manufacturers have compartments that can be locked
with the ignition key.
It will save you from having to close the roof every time you stop.
On the Z3, the key locks the glove box,
but also a set of two compartments,
including a particularly big one.
In comparison Boxster without glove box are much less convenient
Since the only compartment that can be locked
that just allows you to store a pair of sunglasses and a wallet.
Note that like the Z3,
the Boxster also had a storage compartment located behind the seats (optional).
Unlike the Z3 it could not be locked,
however, it had a much more direct access
because you did not have to switch the wind net like on the Z3
to access the storage by lifting the lid.
And since we speak about the storage,
Let's take a look at the trunk.
Item 7: The trunk
The trunk of the Z3 is very small
you really can not put a lot in it.
But, I have to admit it,
it is bigger than the boxster's trunk.
Except that the Boxster,
has another trunk in the front,
which makes it much more convenient than the Z3.
Especially on the latest models of Boxster,
because the opening of the trunk front and rear was done with the remote control of the car.
You will say:
"The practical aspect is not the priority when you buy a car with only two seats."
That is true !
But, being able to put luggage makes it possible to use this car
to go on long trips
and not just for short trips or walks.
To illustrate my point,
Here is the amount of luggage that can be put in a Boxster.
As we can see, you can go a away a week with two people.
Here is now what can be put in a Z3.
If you are going for a long rad trip, it is more delicate.
And that's why BMW offered as an option
a kit to install a luggage rack on the trunk.
The two trunks of the Boxster are not only useful for going on holiday.
This makes this car a very practical "daily car"
because you can easily put the shopping of the week for a family of four.
We can put the cold stuff in the front trunk
and since the rear trunk is located just above the engine block,
you can put the hot dishes
like for example pizzas,
like that, they stay at a good temperature.
I often told myself that pizza at home services
should seriously consider using this car as a delivery vehicle ;-)
and since we talk about temperature
let's take a look at the outdoor thermometer
Item 8: Thermometer and other gadgets
On the Boxster, the outdoor thermometer is standard
and the display is on the instrument cluster
On the other side, on the Z3, it was an option
and when you take that option,
the needle clock was replaced by a digital clock.
which only displayed the temperature within a few seconds
when it dropped below 37.5 ° F (3° C).
At this moment, a small "beep" sounds to warn you of the risk of ice.
So .... Maybein the 90's, having a digital clock was "elegant" and "modern",
but today,
it must be recognized that this rectangular screen in a round location
is very ugly.
So, I did replace this expensive "high tech" option
by standard needle version
because even if it does not have a thermometer,
she is still much more elegant.
Now let's talk about something less visible but very practical:
The Boxster is equipped with a timer
which turn off the lights inside the car and in the trunk after 2 hours,
even if you forgot to close a door or the trunk.
The Z3 does not have a timer,
but she also turn off the lights,
when she finished emptying the battery ...
Let's stay in the gadgets
evoking some elements present on the Boxster after 2000
and that the Z3 do not have.
there are:
the illuminated vanity mirrors,
the rain detector
or the central mirror that darkens at night
when someone lights you from behind with his full headlights.
By the way, speaking of headlights,
I would like to make a little parenthesis
on an element that is not present on any of these two young-timer:
daytime running lights.
Item 9: Daytime running lights
In some countries like Switzerland,
you must now turn on your headlights even in daylight
or then install daytime running lights.
On the Boxster, you have the choice between
put LED strips on the air vents of the bumper
or replace the original headlights with expensive aftermarket versions
with a modern design.
These two solutions have the disadvantage of moving away or distorting the original design of the car
which will not necessarily please purists.
The Z3 as a better choice
when you want to install daytime running lights,
because a manufacturer offers fog lamps with incorporated daytime running lights
that fit the car so well
that you could believe that it was like that when leaving the factory.
There are also kits or headlights like "Angel eyes",
unfortunately, they are not powerful enough to be considered as daytime running lights,.
I'm done with my parenthesis on the headlights,
let's move on to something else now.
Item 10: Maintenance and consumption
It must be admitted that so far the Z3 has had a little trouble getting out of the game
but rest assured, she will catch up in the home stretch.
First of all at the level of consumption:
In mixed use,
the basic Z3 1.8 L consumes an average of 9.2 L per 100 km
against 9.7 L for the basic Boxster 2.5 L
it's still half a liter of won 100 km
The counterpart is that it is less powerful 86 ch
but honestly,
do we really need more than 118 hp
to have a peaceful trip in a convertible?
The other big advantage of Z3
it is that its engine is much easier to access.
On the Boxster, to access the upper part of the engine,
it is necessary: to dismount part of the roof
remove the storage bin,
then remove the carpet
and finally unscrew the metal plate that covers the upper part.
But it is not finished !
To access the front of the engine
where is the belt,
alternator,
the air conditioning compressor
or the water pump,
remove a metal plate behind the seats.
In both cases, it is long and not practical.
At least, on the Z3, there is a big hood
which allows do-it-yourselfers to easily access all the elements of the engine block.
We must still admit that we need more often a second trunk
than to access his engine block.
Especially since some mechanical elements of the Boxster are accessible from the trunk
for example at the front is the battery,
the washer fluid reservoir
and the brake fluid reservoir.
in the back trunk is the access to the oil tank cap
and coolant.
You can not talk about car maintenance without talking about the cost.
Instinctively, one would think that the Z3 is cheaper to repair than the Boxster.
In reality for routine maintenance,
wear parts such as: belts,
filters, candles or platelets
are not especially expensive.
The only difference is tires.
On the Boxster, they are a bit wider
so they are much more expensive.
about bodywork or cockpit parts
like: the commodos
switches,
the shifter
or the handles,
whether at Porsche or BMW
they are both very expensive,
especially the Z3 M
whose owners usually say that
the cost of specific parts is twice that of a normal Z3.
Fortunately, today on Internet
you can easily find used or compatible parts
for a reasonable price.
So, as long as you do not let your dealer make the maintenance,
you can afford one of these two roadsters
without necessarily breaking the bank.
And since these old mechanics are relatively simple
there are many things you can do yourself with basic tools.
The last advantage of the Z3 is precisely its price.
If we except the M version and the coupe,
the Z3 is on average much cheaper to buy than a Boxster.
The 1.8L and 1.9L four cylinders have enough power
but if you have enough money,
go for a 6-cylinder
especially the 2.8 L which offers a very good price / performance ratio.
About the Boxster
although it is more expensive than the Z3,,
you must keep in mind that the Boxster seems to have reached a floor price.
so it can be a good investment
if it is well maintained.
Well, we reviewed the technical aspect,
comfort,
the practical aspect,
and the price.
It's time to do a synthesis!
Conclusion:
Even without counting the points,
we realized during this video
that in use the 986 is more practical,
more comfortable
and safer than the Z3.
Then you will say to me:
"If the result is so cleart, why do you still have a Z3 in your garage?"
Well, if I did not sell my Z3
it's because the purchase of a roadster is above all a story of favorites.
It's not like buying a minivan or an SUV,
the rationality does not necessarily have its place.
The Z3 has a very different design from the Boxster,
but I must recognize that they are both beautiful
and when you ride it with your hair in the wind,
This is pure happiness !
I sincerely hope that this little comparison will have helped you to make your choice
because personally
I did not make it...
See you soon !

Dissecting RoboCop Movie & Games | Nostalgia Nerd - Duration: 12:04.
I'd like to talk about Robocop, briefly about the film, and then about the games which followed.
Because, Robocop had a huge influence on my adolescent youth.
Now, being an 18 certified film, that may sound a little crazy, but this was the 80s,
and therefore to not watch a film underage would have been a betrayal of the time.
Besides, look at all the toys which followed.
They expected kids to be knee deep in this sh*t.
Observed from a high level, Robocop is simply a raw action film.
Many people still write it off as that, but it has so many layers of complexity, that
it's really like watching several films in one, and for me one of the best feature films
ever made.
Whoever thought it a good idea to create a 12 certified re-boot was a complete buffoon.
Because under that veneer of action, is a truly visceral and deep film, with a incredibly
clever and tense story line.
It's also littered with satire, parodies and quips on real life, which adds yet another
dimension to this complex cocktail of emotional excitement.
At it's heart we have a young cop, new to the police department, who wants to kick some
ass.
Obviously he decides to kick the wrong ass, and suffers the ultimate consequence.
Except, he's brought back from the brink of death, only to merge with machine and become
neither one or the other - what we'd call a cyborg.
A concept I was already quite fascinated with, thanks to this poster of the Spectrum game
Cyborg, which sadly never materialised in finished form.
This is the concept which fascinated me.
Not only do we have moral implications here, where death migrates to a different kind of
permanence, but we get down to a dark visceral dimension of merging something we consider
to have a soul; a living breathing emotional human, with something cold, mechanical and
unchanging.
I used to lay awake at night thinking about that these very notions.
How would it feel?
What does it mean to the concept of being alive.
Is this cyborg the same person, or has the programming seeping into his mind made him
something new entirely?
The concept and those questions bugged me all through the film, and lay at the core
of the action as you witness this new creation slowly come to terms with what he is, before
finally connecting to what he was before.
Remembering that, although he's Robocop, he was, and indeed still is, Alex Murphy.
On top of this concept is a very clear view of right and wrong, of justice and injustice..
your typical cops and robbers affair, and Murphy's view of that, although sculpted through
the film, remains unwavering.
Watching the film was intense and emotional, and I was left needing something more to appease
my thoughts.
I wanted to get an idea of what it felt like to be Robocop, and so the subsequent video
games of the time came to my rescue.
Robocop, the arcade game.
I'll start with the arcade experience.
The foreign setting of the arcade cabinet, deep in the arcade and away from the safety
of home, combined with it's impressive visuals, felt more connected to the film than anything
else at the time.
The attract mode, depicting key elements of the story, combined with the cold harsh serving
of the title screen, managed to instigate those visceral feelings of the film perfectly.
Of course, without the robotic, surreal music, adapted from the movie then this experience
would have been far less intense.
But as we'll discover, the music of the games, much like the film, is an essential part of
re-creating that almost operatic feeling of Robocop.
Of course, for the casual player, the arcade game is a tough cookie, and the levels don't
seem to bear a strong connection to the film-plot.
We get to wander through the streets, smashing thugs and motorcycles, before having a brief
confrontation with a huge ED-209.. and this is largely how play continues.
You might think that the lack of cohesion to the original story would be a negative,
but it worked well.
It was giving me something extra, on top of the movie experience, and after all, that's
exactly what I had hoped for.
Of course, I wanted to bring this experience into my home, and thankfully Ocean Software
had served up the goods, with their own take for the 8 bit home micros.
Seeing that mesmerising iconic art on loading was something special, but even more special
was the title screen music.
I would load this game up, simply to listen to that music.
In fact, I probably spent more time listening to that music than playing the actual game.
It just seemed to fit so well.
Composed by Jonathan Dunn, it aligned with the story of the film; the transformation
from man to machine back to man again.
It almost brought a tear to my eye.
Now the game itself, was incredibly well written as well.
Because, believe it or not, not all film tie-ins were pieces of unrelenting crud back then.
The Ocean games stuck to the film much more faithfully than Dataeast's arcade cabinet,
and followed the well loved Ocean format of a platformer, sprinkled with mini-games capturing
key points of the movie.
It's a really well thought out package, and although it fairs better on some formats than
others, it mostly still manages to bring the film atmosphere directly into
the living room.
Now, as the early 90s panned out, this desire to play Robocop games didn't go away, and
playing Robocop on my mate's Atari ST was another moment of epiphany.
But this time, having had a year or so to get over the trauma of the film, I was more
concerned with the graphics.
To my 10 or 11 year old eye, they looked almost identical to the arcade machine.
Now clearly a side by side comparison now-days shows us otherwise.
But having come from a Spectrum to the ST, the difference was staggering.
Gameplay wise, it still doesn't hold a candle to the Ocean versions, but it gave me that
Robocop hit, at home and for free.
Of course, during those years, the second movie came and went, and although it was a
reasonable attempt, it was half the film of the original.
Still, it managed to conjure the same feelings of disconnected dred from the first, with
Kane now taking the place of the Robot, in a suit which resembled even less of a man.
Here we had simply a brain, trapped inside a metal can, with a screen seemingly it's
only human like contact outside of the cold, steel structure.
The second movie, despite its flaws, re-ignited my need to engage in the Robocop universe,
and just like before, I went to the arcades.
Now, Robocop 2's arcade experience is a very different kettle of fish from the first.
It's another outing by Data-East, but this time the experience is much more action orientated,
like beat'em ups emerging at the time.
Being a big fan of Final Fight, this was actually exactly what I was hoping for, especially
being able to share the action with a friend.
My brother and I, would often try and battle through these levels, each one controlling
a differently coloured Robocop, blasting whatever was in sight.
Again, connection to the film script is tenuous, but enjoyable... and just like the first,
home ports would follow.
I remember that my only experience at home this time around was from a cover tape of
Your Sinclair magazine, and for a demo it was hard.
I was also a bit older and potentially short on cash, so my the enthusiasm for the game
petered out and I neglected to play the full version until recently.
Of course back in the movies, Robocop 3 came and thankfully went again, and although the
game for the likes of the Amiga and ST is incredible, it's one which completely passed
me by.
Maybe I was still in denial about how atrocious the film was.
It would take a new and exciting title to re-invigorate my senses, and that title would
come in the form of Robocop vs. Terminator on the Sega Mega Drive.
But these are titles I'll be exploring another time, because despite my interest in Robocop
not diminishing, at the time, these latter games didn't connect with the original films,
and are thus unnecessary to this monologue.
I'm not sure if the interest I hold stems from watching the film when I was young, or
whether it would occur watching it afresh today...
I mean, at it's core the original film is asking what it is to be alive, and this concept
indulges to a very deep thirst, or maybe fear in my psyche, which I'm sure others share,
and I think that's why the original film and the moody, atmospheric games which followed,
were so captivating.
It's a similar story with the Alien films and even to a certain extent, the Matrix.
I often hear the question, is the game better than the movie, but it's a question I've always
found a strange one.
A game is a very different medium to a movie, and although you can enjoy one more than the
other, they trigger different feelings, and pander to different areas of your psyche.
What the Robocop games brought to the film franchise, especially with the original was
a sense of completion.
I don't think I would have felt satisfied watching the movie without a decent and engrossing
interactive experience to follow it up with.
Something to really trigger the imagination.
These games allowed me to explore a universe which I found captivating and scratch an itch
which needed scratching.
This is why it saddens me deeply when game adaptations of other great films are just
flushed down the pan, because it not only leaves a sour taste in your mouth, but it
also takes something away from the film experience.
Any imagination or suspension of disbelief you may have held to enjoy the film is snapped
back to gritty reality, when a crappy film tie in slaps it's cash grabbing hands around
your face.
Presented devoid of love or passion for the cause.
But Robocop was a movie and game experience which felt complete, and where-ever that beautiful
combination occurs, it's bloody amazing.
Although there are exceptions to this rule.
Stay tuned for more memories from youth, more Robocop and indeed, added Terminator, and
I'll be back.

ah right the emergency operator what is your emergency
my name's Harper Pendrell I just found a woman and she's really sick there's
blood everywhere I think it's Yaletown fever let's begin
with unforeseen incidents a game that appears to be a classically styled
interactive mystery within a handsomely hand-painted environment for us it's the
quality of the in-game art and the potential gameplay that sees it make
this rundown for me the overall look and feel suggests an atmosphere more likely
depicted within a graphic novel as offered by the muted and restrained
backgrounds alongside the depictions of the characters and their odd shaped
heads spidery bodies and overall color tone that sets it apart from the more
usual point-and-click adventures you'll play as Harper Pendrell an odd job man
from a small town who finds himself in the middle of a terrible conspiracy an
unknown disease is spreading across the country and having found a dying woman
in the street infected with it she asks him to deliver an envelope to a
journalist and only they together with a scientist and a reclusive artist hold
the keys in stopping this play the game features what's said to be a challenging
investigation smart dialogue and a rich cast of interesting characters and comes
with a full English and German voice acting unforeseen incidents hits the PC
May 24th with possible launches across mobile platforms at some point in the
future long term viewers will perhaps instantly
recognize yaku's Island Express which launches for the PC and all the main
consoles on May 29th here we have a mix of an open-world and a Metroidvania
style adventure that blends platforming navigation with pinball gameplay and
puzzle mechanics this one naturally enough sees you play as yaku a dung
beetle you having arrived on the island of Maca mana becomes the local
postmaster expecting an easy life soaking up the Sun and delivering
parcels on this tropical island this idyllic lifestyle is shattered when a
slumbering deity brings havoc to the island brought forth by its nightmares
occuring during its restless sleep yaku's island expresses a fairly unique
offering both on paper and on screen with its quirky handcraft visuals
glit gameplay methodologies the visuals are bold and bright with its contrasting
colors and full of strong organic shapes from the four-person team at villa
gorilla and founded by a triple-a industry veterans were hoping to pick
this one up for the switch where we think yaku will lend itself nicely for
on-the-go handheld gaming at number three world's adrift will launch into
early access exclusive to the PC on May the 17th a long time coming
this massively multiplayer online title comes honestly and correctly billed as a
community crafted game that offers players the ability to create parts of a
fantasy world amongst oceans of floating islands where the underlying premise
stems from the creation of emergent gameplay and stories driven by the
creators the studio's had originally set about to create a procedurally generated
limitless world this at a time when the excitement and promise of no man's sky
held much sway and yet as the game progressed these design ideas were
switched from procedural generation to one driven by the players themselves the
similarities the recently released sea of thieves is a fair comparison
and yet worlds adrift seems to be more sandboxed where there is no questing and
your ability and creativity with the available resources together with your
shipbuilding skills are key to the experience rather than carving out a
somewhat scripted path we've been playing the closed beta for a while and
we're happy to say worlds adrift is something quite different and if you
give it the effort it's hugely enjoyable be this exploring alone or with your
friends there's also the genuine excitement that's felt when you come
across other players be they on their own or within a group will they be
friendly or will they attack you and your craft and try to loot its content
well that's all part of the fun given the gameplay where you're largely
responsible for creating the fun yourselves this won't appeal to everyone
pricing the side and that 24 US dollars nearly twenty pounds this is expensive
for early access those looking for this type of emergent experience might fancy
dipping their toes into the water in forgotten an Maze Runner up we have a
game that hands down no question looks like a studio ghibli movie and will
launch on May 15th for the PlayStation 4 Xbox one and the PC the immediate appeal
of forgotten Ann comes from its overall beautifully handcrafted animation art
style hinged together with the clever use of background colorings and
industrial imagery that delivers an almost cinematic aesthetic more
associated with a feature-length high-tier animation studio rather than a
relatively small indie game studio you play as an a woman from our world who
finds herself with in a fantasy environment where mundane left behind
and forgotten items such as socks bits of paper and scarfs have come to life
with an a 2d adventure game that merges sections of platforming with puzzle
solving aside from this type of gameplay we're looking forward to see how the
game implements what's said to be a moral choice system where actions and
decisions have an ongoing consequence due to the game's multi branching
storylines we're hoping the storyline and events as you progress demonstrate
how your choices impact the environment unlike say the recently released
wargames from one of the creators of her story where the premise as we reviewed
at launched got lost within its execution alongside the visuals the
musical score seemed suitably fitting and comes from the Copenhagen
Philharmonic Orchestra as should be fairly obvious we're super looking
forward to getting hold of forgotten Anne and if the game is as grand as its
visuals and sounds we should be in for something rather special
at number one form a pillars of eternity two dead fire is a sequel to pillars of
eternity and drew 4.4 million dollars in a thick campaign back in early of last
year dead fire is a direct sequel to its predecessor and takes place in the world
of a hora once again players will assume the role of the watcher and in a clever
twist lairs actions and decisions from the first game can carry over into dead
fire and influence the gameplay and story in this sequel new players are
those not wanting to carry their game over into this game and choose their own
starting scenarios at the outset on the gameplay front as always were attracted
to these type of isometric RPGs with its immersive dynamic weather systems all
within an overall visual and sonic package that's a vast improvement on the
original putting aside how pretty this all sounds and looks we're encouraged to
hear dead fire offers multiple options and player choices quests can be
completed in numerous ways often with routes for a solution with or without
combat gone to with the original rest abilities with every character now
having empower points that enables them to enhance one of their other skills by
an impressive magnitude for example when using these empower points the magic
missle skill for example turns a salvo of 4 missiles into one containing four
times as many projectiles other changes include the tweaking of the stealth
aspects NPCs now have vision cones and you're able to distract them by throwing
objects you can also pickpocket enemies to take keys and other such items with a
well-timed slip of the wrist the largest changes of
course the new pirate theme together with the ship management systems which
serves as a mobile base for exploring uncharted islands and for engaging with
ship to ship encounters if that doesn't float your boat you don't need to get
involved too much in the way of ship based combat with the game being able to
be completed without ever engaging in such antics with 3 post-launch dlc
options already confirmed as plenty longevity here for fans of the series
while launching on may 8th on the PC Dead Fire will also come to the

1.3 Podcast en Español - El Verbo "Estar" [Spanish Podcast] - Duration: 5:56.
Hello friends. Welcome to another podcast with Ana and Diego.
Remember that in this series I will play the role of a teacher named Ana.
And I will play the role of a student named Diego.
In this series we talk about grammar and vocabulary topics.
These podcasts also follow the same order as our Complete Spanish Course.
And don't forget to activate the subtitles in your native language.
Click on the subtitles button below.
Let's start, guys!
Present Indicative: To Be
Hi, Ana. How are you?
I'm very good, Diego. And I'm also happy to see that you are prepared for our lesson today.
And how do you know I'm ready for our lesson today?
I don't even know what the topic is.
Today we are going to talk about the verb "to be"
and you just used "to be" in a sentence to greet me.
You asked me "How are you?"
Ah, of course. It's because a few days ago we talked about how to say hello
and we saw several examples that used "to be" to ask about the condition, the mood,
or someone's feelings.
And remember that in another lesson, we also already talked about the verb "to be."
The verbs "to be" and "to be" are similar but they are not interchangeable.
We use "to be" to talk about characteristics more permanent of someone or something
and we use "to be" to talk about temporary states
such as mood or feelings, as you mentioned.
And we also use "to be" talk about location.
So to review we use "to be" with feelings, temporary states, and location.
And what else do we need to know about the verb "to be"?
Well, do you see the conjugation table in the center of the page?
Remember that we said we were going to see this type of table frequently.
You can see that we have the same groups of pronouns as always: six in total.
And each one has its corresponding conjugation.
Let's see some examples to help us.
Okay. If you ask me, "How are you, Ana?" I could answer saying,
"I'm sad because we lost the game."
We are talking about a game that just happened and at the moment I am sad
but I will not continue sad forever.
It is a temporary feeling.
If you feel bad about the defeat we suffered I can say, "You are also sad."
You can see how the conjugation changes depending on who we are talking about.
Of course. Changing the conjugation depending on the person
is something that we already saw when we speak of the verb "to be."
So, let's continue to the next example in the second box.
"They have a fever, they're sick." Since "being sick" is something temporary
and we expect that they will recover, we use the verb "to be."
We say, "They are sick."
Also in this example, we see how the conjugation "are" corresponds to the pronoun "they."
And in the third box we have another example to show that we use "to be" when we talk about location.
If I say "Where are you now?" I'm asking about your temporary location.
But remember that we use "to be" to talk of locations that are not likely to change.
We would say that "Spain is in Europe,"
even though we know that Spain is not going to simply get up and go elsewhere.
Just the same, we use "to be" with permanent and temporary locations.
And finally, what can you tell us about the present progressive?
The present progressive is a verb tense to talk about actions that are happening
at the current time, that is, things that are happening right now.
We'll learn more about that in a later lesson.
For the moment, you just have to know that the progressive present uses a conjugation of "to be".
Well, it looks like we are coming to the end of today's lesson.
I'm a little sad.
But don't worry, Diego. We'll be back with another lesson very soon.

The fire is already on
The barbecue is burning with the meat
And we're going to play for you
A song: "Glen Coe"
We play it as a tune
It's from a massacre
by Clen Coe
in 1692
And after that we play a few reels:
"Pumpkin's Fancy"
It's the first tune I ever learned with slides in it
It was then a hornpipe
I play two parts of it
And after that we're playing "Crossing The Minch"
I used to play it for the dancers from Carike
And now we play it a little bit faster as a reel
And, eh, now..

The First Mithridatic War ended and Lucius
Cornelius Sulla returned to Rome to deal with his political enemies
Mithridates retained control of his Pontic Kingdom, but was forced to give up
all of his gains. This unusually lenient agreement rendered the Republic's
situation in Anatolia unsustainable. The treaty, as well as Mithridates'
ambition for further conquest, made the next two decades of conflict inevitable.
Welcome to our account of the second and third
Mithridatic wars.
The fragile peace achieved at Dardanos in 85 BC couldn't last for long.
After Sulla's withdrawal Phrygia, Galatia and Cappadocia, as well as the legions in
the are were placed under the command of his trusted general Lucius Licinius
Murena. Meanwhile, as his Black Sea holdings rebelled,
Mithridates started raising a new army and navy.
The king's favored general Archelaus, who lost a few battles against Sulla in
the previous war, was afraid for his life and defected to Murena. He stoked the
fears of the Roman general, claiming that Mithridates is planning to break the
truce, so in in 83 BC Murena attacked Pontic
territory on the border with Cappadocia and took a few towns.
Mithridates sent envoys to invoke the former peace treaty, but this was ignored.
We have almost no details on the conflict that would be later known as
the Second Mithridatic War, but it seems that in 82 BC Murena invaded Pontic
territory once again, while Mithridates sent his general Gordius to retaliate
and plunder the province of Asia Minor.
After much maneuvering Gordius' army encountered the legions of Murena, with
both taking up a defensive position with the Halys river between them. The two
commanders initially waited on the opposite sides of the river. But soon Mithridates
appeared and reinforced the waiting Gordius with a much larger contingent.
Despite the desperate Roman defense of the crossings, the Pontic army forced the
river with their superior numbers and crushed
Murena's troops.
After this defeat, Murena received a message from Sulla ordering him to end
the war and make peace with Pontus. He obeyed, but the damage had already been done:
Mithridates restored his prestige
and the smaller kingdoms in the region started looking up to him again.
Pontic king used that respite to subdue the unrest in Colchis, he then returned
to his capital at Sinope and sent ambassadors to Rome, to sign the formal
peace agreements. Meanwhile the Roman appointed King of Cappadocia
Ariobarzanes complained to Sulla that Mithridates was still occupying some
Cappadocian land. Mithridates was reluctant to relinquish
the territory, but Sulla commanded him to do so and the Pontic King obeyed to avoid
a new conflict. However, in 78 BC Sulla passed away and that changed the balance
of power in the region yet again.
Mithridates once again asked his son-in-law, the Armenian king Tigranes II
to invade Cappadocia in order to avoid being seen as the aggressor.
While these events were taking place in Asia, a rebellious Roman commander in Hispania -
Sertorius, was warring against the Senate and big part of the Roman army was in
the area fighting him. Members of his faction came to Sinope and suggested to
Mithridates to becomes allies. Sertorius then sent some advisors to
assist Pontus. But the main reason for war was that the childless king of
Bithynia Nicomedes IV made Rome
the heir of his realm. Mithridates couldn't allow Rome to gain
more power in the region, so when Nicomedes passed away in
74 BC, the war became inevitable.
Mithridates made his move in the same year and invaded Bithynia once again.
Meanwhile two consuls of the previous year
Lucius Licinius Lucullus and Marcus Aurelius Cotta were appointed the
governors of Asia Minor and Bithynia respectively. They devised a plan:
Lucullus was to attack via land from Asia Minor into Pontus, while Cotta would
lead the fleet along the coast. Waiting for Lucullus, Cotta started gathering
his fleet in Chalcedon, but was too slow. Pontic fleet blockaded Roman
vessels in the harbor and then proceeded to destroy or capture most of them.
This left Mithridates almost unopposed in Anatolia. He left a small portion of his
army and a fleet near Tenedos to block any Roman reinforcements and set out to
siege the coastal city of Cyzicus.
In 73 BC Lucullus entered the region. He now had 3 legions under his command
and a number of allied troops for a total strength of 30,000 infantry and
2,000 cavalry. Lucullus quickly defeated the forces
left at Tenedos and marched towards Cyzicus to confront the Pontic forces.
However, there was only one narrow pass leading from the west and Mithridates had
a strong guard here. But, as Sertorius was assassinated in Hispania, advisors
he sent to Pontus were eager to restore their position in Rome and have begun
a secret, subversive communications with Lucullus. They convinced Mithridates to
allow the Romans through the pass, claiming that two of his legions were
ready to desert. This was a lie. The Pontic guard left the pass and
the legions then fortified a hill near the Pontic camp so that Mithridates could
not be supplied by land. Nevertheless, as he had more than 50 thousand troops under his
command, he continued the siege.
The king initially sent 3,000 Cyzican prisoners on the ships so that the citizens
would let him in, but that failed. Then a massive tower erected on two ships was
pushed towards the walls from which a bridge was projected, allowing the Pontic
soldiers to enter the city. The defenders were surprised by the device,
so this succeeded at first, but eventually the Pontic troops were pushed
out and had to retreat. Meanwhile, land forces attacking with siege towers and
rams were repelled three times in a single day.
Finally, a section of the weakened wall gave way in the evening, but the
defenders built improvised fortifications behind it. The assault had
had failed. Soon after all the siege engines of Mithridates were destroyed after this the King's engines were all destroyed by a large
storm. At this point Mithridates decided that his
cavalry was not useful in a siege and sent it away in order to save supplies.
However, the Romans, who had been waiting on the hill, charged down as the cavalry
was crossing a river, capturing thousands and killing many more. Supplies could not
reach the Pontic army when winter came, and many of the men died of starvation
and plague.
Seeing this, the defenders began to sally out frequently, and this convinced
Mithridates to lift the siege. In early 72 BC the king evacuated with his
fleet while his army withdrew over land. More Pontic troops died crossing
a swollen river. Lucullus also attacked them here and
caused more casualties. Back in Cyzicus, games were instituted in honor of
Lucullus which were celebrated for centuries after, called the Lucullean
games.
Lucullus continued to advance against Mithridates, with both sides winning and
Mithridates had to escape to Armenia
in the east with only 2,000 cavalry, whilst the Romans captured key cities
within the Pontic heartland, finally capturing Sinope a few weeks later.
By 71 BC most of Anatolia was under the Roman control.
In the same year, Lucullus sent friendly envoys to the son of Mithridates,
king of Bosphorus Machares, who betrayed his father and agreed to become
the client of Rome. He also demanded
Tigranes to surrender his father-in-law, but the latter refused
The Armenian king controlled Eastern Anatolia, Cilicia, parts of Syria, Iran and
the Caucasus, and was confident. Roman general spent 70 BC building up the
Roman military and administrative presence in Anatolia. In 69 BC he finally
moved against Tigranes with an army consisting of 35 thousand infantry and 10 thousand
cavalry. Meanwhile, Tigranes was supported by the kings of Iberia and
Albania, and had more than 80 thousand under his command. He was eager to engage
Lucullus and ignored Mithridates' advice to avoid the open battle. While
Tigranes was still recruiting troops, Lucullus marched straight at Tigranocerta
and besieged it.
Soon after, Armenian army approached, and the Romans fell back behind the river.
Tigranes started forming up in front of
a hill with a small group of phalangites in the center surrounded by the melee
infantry and missile troops in front. His heavy cavalry – cataphracts were
placed on the right flank, while a bigger group of horse archers manned the left.
Lucullus knew that he is outnumbered, so he formed most of his army in a single
line to avoid being outflanked. He had legionaries in the center with an
equal number of cavalry on the either flank. A force of light Bithynian skirmishers was
screening his infantry. Initially, Lucullus intended to make a running
charge into the Armenians with his infantry, so that their missile units
would not have as much time to grind the Romans down, but at the last moment he
pulled his men back to try something else.
Lucullus knew that the cataphracts were the greatest danger to his infantry,
so the Roman and allied cavalry was sent against the Armenians, but retreated
slowly without committing to the battle. This feigned retreat distracted the
forces of Tigranes and allowed Lucullus to personally lead two maniples
of his infantry on a wide flanking maneuver across the river and around
the enemy's right side, in order to occupy the hill behind the Armenian army.
Coming to the top of the hill, the Roman commander saw that the relatively
undisciplined enemy forces had broken their formation in pursue of the Roman cavalry.
He decided this was the moment and charged down the hill into the rear
of the Armenian cataphracts. Armenian cavalrymen were surprised and attempted
to escape but crashed into their own infantry
causing a massive panic in the center, which began to break rank en masse.
Tigranes escaped with his baggage train. Casualties for this battle are disputed,
but the Romans probably only suffered moderately, whereas the Armenian army was
almost entirely broken and their capital surrendered.
Lucullus continued his campaign and pushed Tigranes to the East. A year
year later, in 68 BC the Romans won another battle at Artaxata.
Unfortunately for Lucullus, Mithridates left Tigranes and returned to his
kingdom in 67 BC. The Romans had less than 10 thousand troops defending the area
and Mithridates utterly defeated them at Zela. Lucullus was forced to
retreat from Armenia to avoid encirclement. His army mutinied and in 66 BC
he was replaced by Gnaeus Pompey. At that point, the Romans were outnumbering
Mithridates and his pleas for peace were ignored.
Pompey defeated the king at the battle of Lyceus. At the same time the Romans
entered in alliance with the Parthians, and when the latter attacked
Armenia, Tigranes was forced to become the Roman client. Mithridates was forced to
withdrew north into Colchis in 65 BC. Pompey was pursuing close behind.
The Romans defeated the Iberians and Albanians along the way. That gave Mithridates
time to murder his traitorous son Machares. He was aiming to attack Rome
again, but the populace was war weary and backed his younger son Pharnaces in
rebellion in 63 BC. This betrayal was the last straw, and Mithridates tried
to commit a suicide by poison. The poison would not work, and his bodyguard killed him.
The third Mithridatic War was concluded. Pompey continued his campaigns in the
East and the wars with the Pontic kingdom were far from over, but that is a tale
for another documentary.

10 Current WWE Wrestlers Who Would Have Been Perfect For The Attitude Era - Duration: 11:17.
"Mah gawd almighty he is broken in half!"
- "Tyson and Austin, Tyson and Austin!"
We get it.
The Attitude Era was the greatest period in wrestling history.
Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, The Undertaker and Mick Foley, in their
prime, under the same roof.
It's the sort of line-up that we can all agree featured the greatest main event scene in
wrestling history, and some of the whackiest stories.
Whether it be classic moments like Austin's beer bath, the Montreal Screwjob and Foley's
Hell in a Cell crash or the sexist and sometimes even racially insensitive undercard stories,
WWF Raw is War featured the sort of non-stop Action and Controvery approach that the company
has tried to replicate in the near 2-decades since.
Comparatively, the current WWE roster could be argued as having the deepest pool of talent
the company has ever seen, with a higher potential for top quality matches than at any point
in history, only with less potential for the same degree of controversy and a (some would
argue) criminally low amount of d*ck jokes.
So what would happen if some of the current crop were able to express themselves in the
same way as those in the attitude era did?
Which wrestlers would flourish opposite the likes of Steve Austin in the main event, Billy
Gunn and Road Dogg in the tag division or Steve Blackman in the mid-card?
To help make up your mind, we've compiled this list with our picks for the 10 Current
WWE Wrestlers Who Would've Been Perfect for the Attitude Era.
I'm xxx from cultaholic.com.
Join us!
-------------- 10.
Dean Ambrose When first establishing the criteria for the
perfect Attitude Era star, the most obvious characteristic you can look for in a contemporary
talent is... well... attitude - and nobody personifies the same no-f*cks-given attitude
of the Attitude Era better than Dean Ambrose.
There's a reason he's been dubbed the modern-era's Brian Pillman.
In his current persona, the former Shield brethren is a grand slam champion in his own
right, but given his history as a hardcore wrestler by the name of Jon Moxley, there
seem to be many more elements to this current day superstar than may first meet the eye.
Sure, his current "whacky Dean" persona would likely be pushed WAY over the top in an attitude
era setting and his seemingly hard to work with attitude - see the Steve Austin podcast
- may have been more of an issue back in the day, but the potential for him to be an unhinged,
hardcore maniac of the Pillman or Mick Foley ilk would have been way higher, and his (at
times) lacklustre in-ring style disguised by gimmicks, personality and those oh-so-impressive
facial expressions.
Just imagine Ambrose and Foley in their prime.
Truly worth salivating over.
9.
Braun Strowman Besides attitude, there is one thing the WWE
had a lot of back in the attitude era, and that was "big, sweaty men" - it truly was
the land of giants!
And there are no bigger, sweatier, or more "gianter" in the current era than Braun Strowman.
This near 7 foot tall bohemoth is the sort of wrestler who could've made it in any era
given his stature and athletic capabilities, but the former strong-man competitor has also
proven to have the comedic timing and believable bad-assery necessary to have existed at the
peak of the attitude era.
Can you imagine Braun Strowman coming face to face with attitude era Kane?
Squashing Kai En Tai?
Being a member of the Ministry of Darkness?
The possibilities are endless, and given how his on-screen antics have become more and
more reminiscent of the attitude era over the course of his career - think smashing
a double bass over Elias, emerging from a garbage truck, yanking down some conveniently
placed scaffolding - Strowman has already proven himself worthy of earning his spot
in those forever beloved attitude era highlight reels.
8.
EC3 Another vitally important aspect of the typical
attitude era WWE wrestler was their body image.
At the top of the card, the solid builds of Steve Austin, The Rock and Triple H reigned
supreme, with the impressive muscle definition on the likes of Ken Shamrock and Val Venis
impressing lower down the card.
While there was always space for the less body-builder-image physiques of The Hardys,
The Dudleyz, Big Boss Man and, of course, Rikishi, the unspoken rule at the time was
to look and be larger than life - the type of man a man would want to be, and a woman
would want to be with.
Nobody in current day WWE personifies this unspoken rule better than newly re-signed
NXT star EC3.
Not only is he attractive, well tanned and well oiled, but he most importantly has the
build.
Is there anyone in current day WWE with more muscles popping out of more places than this
man?
He's somewhat of a poster boy for the era to look at, but his on-the-mic comedic sensibilities
and smarmy, one-percenter persona would also prove to be an excellent foil for the rough
and ready hard men of the time, making him a potential friend of the McMahons and an
unmissable part of the action each and every Monday night.
7.
Gallows & Anderson When thinking back to the attitude era, it's
tough to look beyond the tag division.
Whether it was Edge & Christian, the Hardys, the New Age Outlaws, the Dudleyz or even the
short-lived return of The Road Warriors, it seemed there was always something interesting
and potentially show-stealing on offer.
People even look back on Too Cool with fond memories, and they were a couple of guys dressed
in baggy pants and sunglasses dancing to white-people-hip-hop...
Looking at the current WWE roster, there are a few standout teams that spring to mind as
great fits for such a division: The Usos, The Authors of Pain, The Bludgeon Brothers,
even The New Day could all provide exciting matches with any number of attitude era teams,
but none of them would reap the out-of-the-ring benefits of more adult content and the ability
to provide off-the-cuff moments of inspiration than Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson.
The 2 former Bullet Club members have proven inside and outside of the WWE that their comedic
timing and ability to cut a believable, realistic promo is second to none, and this is only
reinforced when they're given the opportunity to run with more adult content - see Gallows'
Sex Ferguson persona on the independents (changed to Tex Ferguson on WWE's Southpaw Regional
Wrestling), for a prime example.
Importantly for the era, the team is also made up of two pretty big dudes, making a
tag team feud with any number of teams - including the likes of the Brothers of Destruction - a
believable route for them to take; a fact that only reinforces how perfect they would
have been for the attitude era.
6.
Lana If there was one element of the attitude era
that has undeniably been improved in the years following, it's the women's division.
We've come a long way from the bra and panties matches between Sable and Jacqueline, the
public strip teases and the man-on-woman violence.
Happily, the WWE have also moved beyond their preferred look of big breasted blonde bombshells
and into a realm more representative of women of all body types.
But, if there was to be one current WWE women's wrestler who could've fit into the mould of
the attitude era's greatest women's wrestlers, it would be Lana.
The supremely attractive Mrs. Rusev would not only have the blonde bombshell thing going
for her, but she'd also have the gimmick.
In an era where "foreign heels" were often Canadian, a pro-Russia gimmick in the women's
division could've done wonders as regards getting Lana over as a top female character
on WWE programming and would've likely resulted in a prominent managerial role or a run or
two with the women's gold.
It would have been money.
5.
Chad Gable Thinking back to the later years of the attitude
era brings memories of a solid mid-card of hard-working, incredibly talented grapplers
like Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Perry Saturn, Dean Malenko and Eddie Guerrero, and if there
was to be one contemporary WWE talent that would be able to mix it in the ring with the
same technical prowess it would be Chad Gable.
Gable has moulded himself after technical wrestling legend Kurt Angle, adapting his
comparatively as legitimate competitive background to a grappler's style in the squared circle,
creating a somewhat timeless aura to his offense that would be well suited to matches with
any of the attitude era's greatest.
While there are arguably better in-ring workers around in WWE at the moment, few possess the
unique style and ability to pull it off as Chad Gable does, making him the ideal candidate
for a work-horse role in an attitude era roster.
4.
Big E There are some wrestlers who come along at
the right time and in the right place, and one such a wrestler who would've been just
those things during the attitude era is Big E. The New Day's powerhouse front-man would've
fit the look of the day, has a sense of humour unlike anyone else in the WWE right now that
would have felt right at home during the era, and has proven throughout his time with the
New Day that he isn't afraid to tackle sexual innuendo from time to time; a key aspect of
any attitude era mid-carder, I'm sure you'll agree.
He would have, of course, been a great fit for The Nation of Domination given his tag
team credentials and how almost every black WWE star of the time was associated with the
group, but it's in his in-ring work - which doesn't rely upon just his frightening strength,
but goes above and beyond that into something altogether more entertaining - that the former
Big E Langston could have become a real player in an attitude era roster; enhancing the slower,
methodical matches of those with super-strength into faster and more entertaining match-ups
that would have separated him from the rest and made him into a memorable attitude era
star.
3.
Fandango If there's a current WWE wrestler who could
benefit the most from a more adult-orientated product, it would be Fandango.
As one half of the fashion police, Fandango has been packaged in a family friendly manner
unbecoming of his more adult sense of humour and terrific comedic timing, though glimmers
of his more edgy side do remain.
The man with the dancer gimmick wouldn't need to change much, just go all-in on his slightly
creepy, live-the-gimmick persona, and really push home those circular thrusts.
He wouldn't ever be a main event player, but he'd be a good foil for the likes of The Godfather,
and may have even been the sort of character considered as a potential member of Right
To Censor, and who doesn't want to see that?!
2.
Elias The attitude era was all about celebrating
personas as close to the real person behind them as has ever been the case in the history
of wrestling, but that doesn't mean there wasn't room for gimmicks.
Most wrestlers had their personas born out of such gimmicks, and many others created
gimmicks out of such personas, but just as is the case now, there was always room for
a musician, especially one with the self-worshipping delusion and cheap heat capabilities of this
generation's Elias.
Who wants to walk with him?
Of course, some small elements to the character would have to be altered to fit in with the
times.
For example, Walk With Elias wouldn't quite work in an era branded as WWF and not WWE,
while his hipster-inspired get-up would not quite hit home in the same way as it does
in the contemporary landscape.
His grunge-inspired look and style of song would, however, be just as provocative, if
not more so, to a WWE fan of the time, and if ever there was a stereotypical audience
to draw legitimate hatred out of through home-town insults, it was the incredibly vocal attitude
era crowds.
In the ring, Elias could cover for his lack of speed by instead focussing on drawing heat,
and he could always cover up a loss by smashing someone over the head with his guitar.
He'd be a solid fit for a hardcore match, especially with so many clamouring for his
comeuppance, and if they ever did turn him babyface, they'd have a chart-topping music
artist on their hands.
It'd be a win for the WWE and a win for Elias.
1.
John Cena If you look at modern era WWE stars who can
talk the talk, walk the walk, look the look and backstage politic like a backstage politician,
then there are none more iconic than John Cena.
The 16-time world champion could out-talk almost anyone - as proven in his 2-year-long
programme with The Rock - and his never-budging good-guy persona would be one hell of a feather
ruffler for someone as anti-everything as Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Cena's even proven in recent years that he's capable of some great matches!
Imagine the promos between Cena and Austin or Cena and McMahon, the ways they could switch
his wholesome persona into something to be hated by an audience begging for blood and
controversy.
It'd be fantastic!
Feuds with The Ministry, The McMahons, Austin, Triple H, Mick Foley and The Undertaker would
be blockbuster events, and could you imagine him as the leader of an undercard stable with
Too Cool and Rikishi?
It would be priceless!
Cena is the sort of performer who has it all, and seeing him be able to mix it with the
very best of the best on a regular occurrence is a simply mouth-watering prospect.
