As English learners, we need to have a rich vocabulary.
We should be able to talk about different topics comfortably.
Topics like Economics, Astronomy, Psychology, Literature, Philosophy, ... etc.
I am not saying that we need to be experts in these disciplines and we also don't need
to learn the jargon.
What I am trying to say is that we need to learn the basics, we should know the basics.
In today's episode, as you can see from the background behind me, we are going to deal
with astronomy.
So, by the end of this episode, you will be able to talk comfortably about the astronomy,
about this wonderful science.
Let's do it.
Okay, let's start by asking the question: what is astronomy?
Well, astronomy is the scientific study of the moon, the sun, stars, and planets.
To help you understand, let's take an example.
Take marketing for instance, marketing helps us better sell our products and as a result
make more money.
Astronomy as a science helps us understand ourin the universe, where we are in the universe.
Because of astronomy we know that we are living on a planet called the earth.
This planet has a moon that is orbiting it.
By orbiting, I mean going around it.
The earth itself is orbiting the sun.
It's not the only planet however that is orbiting the sun, there are other seven planets that
are orbiting the sun as well.
Here they are.
The most famous of these planets, after the earth of course, is planet Mars.
These eight planets along with their their moons and the sun form the Solar System.
This System contains other smaller bodies such as comets and asteroids.
And is, I mean the Solar System part of a galaxy called the Milky Way, our galaxy.
But wait a second, what does a galaxy mean?
Don't worry, I will answer this question in a moment.
It's also because of astronomy that we are now able to understand and explain many natural
phenomena such as: moon phases (why does the moon appear to take different shapes as the
lunar month goes by), seasons, summer, winter, spring, and autumn, why do we have seasons?,
Sunset, sunrise, solar eclipse, lunar eclipse ... etc.
All these wonderful and mind-blowing phenomena are explained in detail by astronomy.
Not just that, astronomy also helps us understand that, for instance, a day is the time the
earth takes to complete a full rotation, or revolution, around its axis.
Astronomy also tells us that a year, which is about 365 days, is the time the earth takes
to complete a full orbit around the sun.
Let's now get back to the question about galaxies: what is a galaxy?
Well, a galaxy is system of stars, billions of stars, along with the dust and the gas
that is between them, all of these are held together by gravity.
The sun, our sun, is just one star of these billions.
That will be it for this video.
Thank you very much for watching it.
I hope you enjoyed it.
By now, you have a good idea about astronomy, I hope.
Subscribe for more videos and I will see you in the next one.
Until then take care and keep working on your English. ?
