Inter-Korean railway projects, its symbolic meaning and future prospects - Duration: 2:36.

After having jointly inspecting the Donghae Line last Friday, officials from Seoul and

Pyongyang are conducting a joint inspection today on the North Korean side of the Gyeongui

Line.

Our Kim Hyesung reports on the meaning of the move and the future prospects for inter-Korean

transport projects.

On May 17th, 2007.

Two trains crossed the Military Demarcation Line that separates the two Koreas.

They traveled along two railways, the Gyeongui Line in the west, and the Donghae Line in

the east, in the first trial runs since the Korean War.

Jejin Station is the northeasternmost station in South Korea, about 6km from the DMZ and

10 km from the North's Kamho Station.

It's one of the stops on the Donghae Line that runs to North Korea's Mount Kumkang Station.

After being left empty for about a decade since train services stopped in 2008, Jejin

Station could possibly see trains from North Korea coming in again.

Officials from Seoul and Pyeongyang have begun joint inspections into the Donghae Line and

Gyeongui Line railway sections on the North Korean side as part of the Panmunjom Declaration.

Reconnecting inter-Korean transport links is also part of President Moon Jae-in's new

economic roadmap, which aims to connect South Korea with the North via the Donghae Line

and Gyeongui Line, and connect to Russia, China, and Europe through the Trans-Siberian

Railway and Trans-China Railway.

If completed, the railways would enable free movement of people and resources between the

two Koreas, and also cut transport times between South Korea and Europe by a third compared

to sea routes.

For it to succeed, however, experts say a step by step approach and funding is key.

"It's not just the railways themselves, electricity and other infrastructure would need to be

built in the North.

North Korean trains are also mostly outdated, and run at a speed of about 30 kilometers

an hour.

All this improvement requires enormous funding and years of work.

With North Korea under UN sanctions, direct global financing is impossible.

So in order to find sources of funding, cooperation with the global community would also be needed."

Under current UN Sanctions, technology transfers or direct economic projects in the North are

banned.

South Korea's transport ministry says it plans to start restoring the severed sections in

the South first, like the section between Jejin and Gangneung on the Donghae Line starting

later this year, as a first step towards reconnecting inter-Korean transport.

North Korea wants U.S. to make 'bold move' of establishing peace treaty: CNN - Duration: 1:37.

The future of North Korea's denuclearization could now hinge on the Trump administration's

willingness to establish a permanent peace treaty that will guarantee the security of

the Kim Jong-un regime.

CNN says this is what Pyongyang is calling for to continue talks with the U.S.

Kim Hyo-sun tells us more.

North Korea is reportedly insisting on signing peace treaty with the United States.

Citing unnamed sources, CNN says Pyongyang will not likely proceed further with denuclearization

talks if Washington is unwilling to make a (quote) "bold move" of replacing the armistice

agreement with a permanent peace treaty that will ensure the security of the Kim Jong-un

regime.

This can be interpreted as Pyongyang's willingness to establish a legally binding peace treaty,...

which requires the approval of two-thirds of the U.S. Senate.

The article also explains the North is pressuring the Trump administration to lift sanctions

against the regime,... believing they've been fulfilling their promises.

While the North says it has taken big steps by freezing its nuclear and missile testing,

destroying one of its nuclear sites and facilitating the upcoming repatriation of U.S. service

members' war remains,...

President Trump has reportedly expressed frustration over the lack of progress in denuclearization

talks with the regime.

Yet,...

President Trump has denied the report by the Washington Post on Monday that he's frustrated.

He slammed the report as fake news,... and tweeted he's (quote) "very happy" with the

pace of Pyongyang's denuclearization,... adding that all of Asia is happy as well.

Intense heat wave to remain _ 072418 - Duration: 1:48.

We just heard from Hee-jun's report about the sweltering heat in Korea,... but other

parts of the world have had similar weather conditions.

A major heatwave in Japan broke records with an all-time high of 41-degrees Celsius, leading

to over 40 deaths this summer.

And we get a check on those unfathomable weather conditions around the globe with our Lee Jee-hyun

at the weather center.

Jee-hyun, while some areas are barely getting through the heat,...

Beijing is facing another type of extreme weather,... with heavy downpours?

Right Semin, while Korea and Japan are braving the severe heat this summer, China has been

seeing lots of showers under the direct and indirect impact of typhoons.

The 11th typhoon of the season, Typhoon Wukong has formed southeast of Japan a couple of

days ago, but it's very unlikely that it will have an effect on the Korean peninsula.

As Semin mentioned, Asia isn't the only place dealing with searing heat.

Similar sweltering temperatures have been felt across many parts of the world... and

tens of thousands of people have been hospitalized for heat-related illnesses

Back here in Korea, Seoul and Daegu could see highs in the upper thirties... and we

could possibly see more record-breaking temperatures.

The heat will linger through the night and warm nights will only make the long heat wave

more dangerous.

This afternoon, Seoul will get up to 37 degrees Celsius, and Busan will hit 34 degrees.

We are seeing no relief from the heat, so drink plenty of water and avoid outdoor activities

in the afternoon.

That's all for me at this hour, back to you Semin.

Two Types of Fandoms - Duration: 3:58.

I'm hiding in my bedroom because

the neighbors decided to start jackhammering

I never thought -

I never really like, *got* why every Youtuber in the city

would complain about the noise but suddenly I understand!

Hi friends! BarefootVlogs here. As Xenolilly said,

This month we're talking all about fandoms and tranformative works!

I think it's interesting that there can be fandoms of fictional things and

fandoms of actual real live people

so you know, there's like, the Doctor Who, Harry Potter

Game of Thrones, any TV show, umm...

kind of fandom

And then there's fandoms for actual celebrities,

and like the Vlogbrothers and the McElroy brothers

...and... anybody else... I don't...

it's bad that the two real live people that I think of

are like, brothers who've built an empire

and now I'm realizing maybe I need to diversify

some of my uh... consumption there

ANYways...

so yeah, I don't really know if there's really a point to it,

because I think both fandoms are valid

and like, it's really more about...

what the fandom kind of represents and how

they as a community work together on things

and you know, don't tear each other down and aren't too toxic

things like that.

and less about like, you know,

the fact that it's a real person vs fiction

I think it's good to remember that even with celebrities

or like, vloggers or

whoever else is who is in the social media public sphere

it's important to remember that even though

they are real people

and you're a fan of what they do and

what they've done in the past and blah blah blah like..

They're also still showing you a filtered side of them

umm... and I think it's always good to remember

that even though they're real people um.... it's still

in a way a fiction of their real life

um... so I guess there's that

I don't know, I think what Xenolilly said

was a really good point of like,

fandoms and transformative works

really help you like, engage in the world

in a more optimistic and hopeful way

of like, maybe actually like things will work out okay

and even though it will be hard right now

and even though life is difficult, like,

if someone else can do it, I can do it

um... even if it's a story.

and that's why I think storytelling is so important

because through stories and telling each other -

that's how culture's built, but it's also how culture can be changed

and it's also how you can be changed

by hearing more about different stories and how um...

whether they're real or fictional just how someone

was able to overcome odds

or able to develop im-- EMpathy... or...

I don't even know!

There's just something about

certain stories that just grab at your heart

and won't let you go

and make you realize just like,

all of the things that are possible in the world

and I think it's really important to have that kind of hope

Yeah! What do you think?

What kind of stories have you um, listened to

over the years that have helped you um,

in times of crisis?

For me, Harry Potter and the Sacred Text

is a podcast that has gone through the

Harry Potter books and and kind of treated it like

a sacred text and they've done different um...

like spiritual practices to delve deeper into the text

and different meanings and stuff

and at first I was a little um...

hesitant you know it was a little like, okay they're using

Christian practices but talking about Harry Potter

but also I love Harry Potter

and I love that spiritual practice so why not?

So I listened to it and I love it!

and um...

I think it's a very interesting way to delve deep

into um a particular work like Harry Potter

and um

understand more about the lessons in it

that maybe JK Rowling never even like, thought of

All right, I proly have rambled enough

so I will talk to you next month

Two Koreas to inspect railway lines along west coast of North Korea - Duration: 0:54.

Let's begin with the latest instance of inter-Korean cooperation... that has been blossoming ever

since the big Panmunjom summit in April.

Officials from the two Koreas are conducting railway inspections north of the border on

this Tuesday.

Seoul's Unification Ministry says South and North Korean officials will inspect rail lines

along North Korea's western coast.

The authorities will check the section between Kaesong station and the Military Demarcation

Line... and hold a meeting afterwards.

Seoul is sending a 15-member delegation led by the railway bureau chief of the transport

ministry... and Pyongyang is sending a six-member delegation headed by a senior official from

its railway ministry.

The move comes as Seoul and Pyongyang agreed to modernize railways in North Korea as well

as those that cut across the inter-Korean border at their railway talks last month.

North Korea begins dismantling Sohae Satellite Launching Station: 38 North - Duration: 0:52.

Despite reports emerging about the supposed lack of progress on North Korea's denuclearization,...

it appears Pyongyang has taken a first step toward fulfilling its June 12th Joint Statement

with the U.S.

According to U.S.-based North Korea monitoring website 38 North on Monday, new commercial

satellite imagery of the Sohae Satellite Launching Station, the regime's main satellite launch

facility, shows the North has started dismantling key facilities.

They include the rocket engine rail-mounted processing building, where parts for space

vehicles are assembled.

As the facilities are believed to be important parts of the regime's ICBM program, 38 North

says such efforts are a significant step by North Korea.

The launching station is believed to be the one North Korea promised U.S. President Donald

Trump it would take down during their summit in Singapore.

Aram…what's the latest?

Well Semin...Just over a dozen others are said to have been injured in Sunday's rampage

along Danforth Avenue.

After an exchange of gunfire with police, the 29-year-old suspect, identified as Faisal

Hussain, was later found dead.

It's unclear if he was killed by police or if he took his own life.

Investigators are trying to determine the gunman's motive.

His family said in a statement late on Monday that he was suffering from severe mental illness.

However police said they are also considering terrorism as a possible motive.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences in a tweet, while Toronto Mayor

John Tory condemned what he called the despicable attack.

The South Korena embassy said no Koreans were among in the injured.
