Hello guys!!!
Today, I will meet a friend of mine.
If you've seen the other videos, you probably saw him
The video's called "Zach the Pho-mate" or something *link in description
So after my travels, I'm back in Saigon now
at least for a couple of more days
and haven't met this guy for a long time so I gotta catch up
and today we meet at this barbershop
I just got a haircut last week
but I'm gonna see what he's doing
Hello!
Hi! -Hey! -Is Zach here? -Not sure
-Hi, I'm Till. -Tom -Hi Tom, nice to meet you. -Nice to meet you
Hi. -You're the founders here, I guess? -He's the founder
Hello buddy! -Hey, how's it going? -Looking sharp
What do you do with that?
-Beard? -It's beard oil. Oh yeah, this is beard growth oil
Uhmm.. -In a sense, it's not a magic potion
it's not that you magically grow a beard but
if you're planning to grow a beard, if you want to help it
and you have some beard growth, then this can help because
especially in the beginning
sometimes it can be really itchy
once you start growing your beard -Yeah
and it nurtures the hair
Especially the thin hairs which usually break easily
and it tries to make it stronger and
it will support the growth of the beard
kinda like evens everything out. - Yeah
But it's not if you don't have a beard growth
it will not magically grow. -Not really, yeah
We started in Hanoi, we started our roots are in Hanoi
we also used to live in Hanoi
So Hanoi is the most... to start. -That's reason you started out
and then after 3-4 months, I think about this time we started
heading for Saigon. In June we started a new training process
because we train our own barbers.
Because there's no barber education or
here in Vietnam, it doesn't exist.
So yeah, they had to step out of their comfort zone
find people on the street, bring them in
and they started perfectly, we are looking for in barbers is passion
and there are people with a lot of passion
but we cannot afford to live for 5 months
with our income. -Yeah
and or let alone pay enough for a barber course so.
We didn't want to do that, we didn't want to
rule out all the people we cannot afford
doing this so we want to give everyone a fair and equal chance
so that's why we paid them a salary
while doing the training
How many people applied?
In Hanoi, we started with 50 people
and through three rounds
so the first round one was like speed dating
like, to see if we have some kind of click
if the passion was there.
And then from there, we went to.. I think about 25 people
to 2nd round, then we did some basic exercise like
holding scissors, shaving... to see if they had that feeling
and then from there, we took 15 people to the 3rd round
and the 3rd round was quite fun
because what we did was that we went to an Escape Room
and we put them in the Escape Room with 2 teams
and they had to escape the room
and what we wanted to test with it is to see if they were team-players
because you can really really easily figure out
who are team-players and who are individualists and
we always say this company
"We don't run this company, what we run is a family"
We are our family for each other
and well, in a family, you want team-players
you don't want to have individualists so
the 3rd round was a lot of fun and
from the 3rd round we picked 5 barbers and..
those were the 5 barbers that started working with us
for Saigon we're trying another 4
I think beginning in July, we're gonna start a new training program
for another 4 barbers
Awesome! - So yeah, recruitment is starting now
Women like, go to a nail salon.
Why can't men have room
especially a place to have whiskey and cigars
yeah, we call it, in a way, "a men's spa"
it's a place for men to hang out, relax, chill
just to leave the busy-ness in life and
just to escape for 2 hours. -Yeah and especially like
there's a lot of option like people tell me
'Oh we can get a haircut for 40,000 and you can get a haircut over here
and this', and I was like 40,000 is just what gets you
to a guy that kinda takes the
buzzer like... kinda quickly cut your hair
took like a little bit of variation.
But there's nothing else than that, you're just in then you're out
But here you come in, you're cared for
People greet you, I mean the whiskey doesn't hurt
and I mean, I can't say too much about like the environment
like a, there's kinda one thing in Vietnam, as much as I love the country
and I have no plan on leaving, but there's too much like pop music
and too much of that hip, hipster vibe type of thing so..
like you coming to a place that's like laid-back..
got a swing playing, you got the nice chairs like
this is how it should be, it just feels right. - You cannot
really compete to the 40k on the streets, it's different
Completely different. -Yeah
Are you getting a haircut now? -I am
Well actually, I like cold showers in general
Yeah. -A lot better.
Cold shower in the morning, is like a wake-up call right?
You don't need coffee. -Yeah
Looking good, looking good!
All thanks to Mr. Lin
Actually the video of us two, it's in one of the higher views
to my channel. -The -It's got like 600 views already
I guess when you have 2 guys that are attractive.. it's kinda... -Yeah
that's it! -Hard to keep the views away -That's it!
It's like loads of girls just sharing
but I think Vietnamese is like, it's a fun language -Uhmm..
like people joke around but it's very warm
I think the grammar makes a lot of sense
I like the words generally so it's..
it's.. I felt kinda bad that my Vietnamese was this bad
before but the more I talk to people that are
actually really good in Vietnamese.. like Till over here or
all their friends, like they've all been here and they've been
learning Vietnamese for like 5 years so.. -Wow!
I've only been here for like 8 months so I don't feel that bad anymore
How did you learn English Lin?
When I was a student, I had a part-time job
as a waiter, as a bartender..
at some restaurants, I worked at a hotel too
and there was a lot of Western people there
Yes, please
Yeah, it's a mustard
Hmm... It's the cheese
I cannot be your focus, you've gotta be focus on..
building something to kinda contribute to people
and like when you're focused on changing things and
helping people, the money will come
as long as you do things the right way
Ok Zach was just dropping some business nuggets
which we're gonna dig into now again so..
Zach, what do you think about the entrepreneur, wantrepreneur culture?
There's a lot of people that really wants to be entrepreneur or..
they think it's appealing, like "Oh look at Elon Musk!"
and all that he has done but
all they that really see is the massive financial success
right now, they don't see all the hard work that went into
the people and all the struggles that he deals with on a daily basis
I mean if you look at the guy's schedule and what he's been through
it's ridiculous, like there's a big reason I mean, there's a lot of reasons
that he is where he's at now
But a lot of people just kind get hung up on the money
and they wanna have that financial success
but big thing about business or..
honestly the most important thing is to..
be interested in changing people, helping people
and kind of changing the world
and the money will come after that
assuming everything else are done right
Honestly, if you're focus on the money..
it's not gonna fulfill you as much, but if your focused on
helping people and growing things.. improving the world
the money will come later and it's gonna be so much more
fulfilling and that's what's really will drive you
but if you don't just push yourself to get started
if you don't kinda get over your hesitancy, you're not
gonna get anywhere.
You either fail or you succeed and if you fail, that's a good thing
then you could learn how to succeed
I have this friend, and he's very successful just..
sold his company for a couple of million and
there is a thing that I didn't know about him, I only
got to know that when I talk to more people was that
he was failing a couple of times, like, a lot of times but
it's always in a small scale, always like matter of month
or something then he will switch something
he was putting a product, didn't work
stash them, just put them away
I feel like Asia always..
you're going to Asia.. and whatever happens you
always leave as a better person
at least a different one. -At least a different one!
But I would still say as a better person
definitely Asia made me more resilient
big time. Big time, more resilient!
Yep, finishing up! Finishing up!
That's a finish!
Zach is paying now. I hope you liked this episode
that I went into the deeper conversations and..
