(MARKER SCRATCHING)
(ELECTRONIC VIDEO GAME CHIME)
So, I get to talk about video games again today which is pretty great
and I get to talk about one of the games that I've been playing the most
and that is Fortnite.
If you would like to see me play Fortnite,
I do have a Twitch channel, RikkiPoynterPlays,
which I will have a link down below in the description box and in the comments.
So, I actually made a video about Fortnite earlier in the year
talking about how accessible it was to someone who is deaf,
has hearing loss, etc, etc.
And in a nutshell, it wasn't really all that accessible.
I mean, obviously it depends on how much hearing you have
or, you know, what kind of hearing you have,
what you can and can't hear, blah, blah, blah,
because, again, deafness is a spectrum.
And now there's something that's a bit of a game changer.
So, with season five comes a brand-new update with two accessibility features.
One is for blind people and, as a not blind person,
I can't really comment on that.
Maybe James Rath will talk about that
because he has played Fortnite, we've played Fortnite together.
But, for deaf people, we now have visuals
and I can't remember what they called it
but, essentially, it's taking the sounds of chests, footsteps, battles, battling
and letting you know, hey, it's happening
and this is the direction that it's in.
So, what was a good accessibility feature already was that,
when you got shot, it would tell you where you were getting shot from.
So, that's always been there which is great
because I don't think PUBG has that.
Actually, people confirmed in another video that PUBG does not have that.
So, that was a bit of a struggle
but, with Fortnite, you got that accessibility.
However, that's the only accessibility that you got.
Now, I have been able to hear footsteps,
when they're running, anyway, also not all the time
because I've definitely been ambushed without knowing it
and some guns, yes and no,
but, chests, I can't hear chests at all.
Like, it's just impossible for me.
So, what you get with this, I'm gonna try to find a picture to put up here.
So, you get a circle around your character and it comes up little icons.
You get chests and they're, like, a yellow-orange colour
and then there's like a little fire
that kind of insinuates that there's battling going on.
There's footsteps and, you know, the basic sounds that are happening,
you get notified that they're there.
And that is so awesome.
I love being able to have that.
I mean, with the battling and whatnot,
I don't really have a problem with that most of the time.
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.
But the chests - again, I can't hear them at all.
So, to know that it's gonna let me know that I missed one
is absolutely fantastic and I never want that feature to go away.
So, those are the good things.
There's one thing that is a negative, that I really don't like,
and that is the fact that this accessibility feature
acts like a cochlear implant, OK?
When you turn the feature on, everything else is off.
So, there's no sound whatsoever.
One - you can't hear your teammates.
I tried it with a friend and the talking went 'poof'.
Maybe that was a glitch on my end somehow
because we only used it once but I never used it again
with that setting because how am I supposed to play squad or duo?
I mean, I can't understand everything that my teammates are saying
but, you know, it was still nice to have something.
Now, if you're playing by yourself, it doesn't really matter as much, I guess,
depending on, like, if you like absolutely, like, zero noise
or if it just doesn't apply to you,
maybe you're 100% profoundly deaf,
maybe you do have a cochlear implant and you shut it off today
because you don't want to deal with it, well, it's already quiet.
Or if you're just, like, really, really deaf without the hearing aid.
You know where I'm going with this.
If you're deaf, you know what I'm talking about.
But, as a streamer, this is the most boring thing.
It makes streams so boring and I lose viewers whenever I use it.
So, I was testing out and it was so boring because I'm focused on the game.
I can't always be as entertaining as I want to be when I'm focused on the game,
especially because there's no sound,
so I have to focus only on the visual part of it
which I really only need a visual part of it for chests.
So, if you've got hearing streamers, they're gonna get bored.
Of course, if they like you enough, they're gonna stay
but overall it's just really boring.
I like...because I still have enough hearing
to be able to hear the explosions
and the shots and, you know, whatever else,
I mean, not as loud, not as well as hearing players
but there's something in there, it's nice to have that
and I do feel like I focus a little bit better.
With the visual thing, it is kind of small.
So, sometimes I'm like, 'Wait, what is this?'
And then I'm not entirely focused on the rest of my surroundings.
Why can't we have both the visual and the audio?
Like, to me, it doesn't make any sense
to not have the audio part in there as well.
Have the audio and also have the visual.
I mean, there's gotta be some audio in there anyway, somehow,
with some sort of programming because how else would you have the visuals?
So, it's a problem for all of those.
All of those, you know, ways of playing, all of those systems
have zero audio when turning that feature on but mobile still has sound.
And if you don't know, the accessibility feature,
that particular feature was on mobile to begin with.
So, why did they not transfer that to PC, to console, to Switch?
So, hopefully, maybe that's just an oops in the system
and, you know, with the 100,000 updates that they do already,
maybe that can get fixed because, just based on that fact alone,
I did not want to bother with using it again.
I mean, I still will probably go back and forth just to test it out
but probably only when I'm playing Fortnite by myself
and not on stream which really is not that often.
Overall, I appreciate it, I love that it's an option
but I think that's one major thing that needs to be changed.
So, yes, fellow deaf Fortnite players,
please let me know if you've used it and let me know your thoughts on it.
I know one guy didn't buy a battle pass until this feature came on
so, obviously,
this is the power of accessibility in providing that accessibility.
You get more customers.
People need to realise that. It's a great thing.
When you make something accessible, you're gonna get more people,
whether you're offering a free service or a paid service.
And if you are a blind Fortnite player,
I'd love to know your thoughts on the accessibility feature
that they have for you all.
Obviously, it's not gonna work very well for me.
I mean, I could probably play with it just to see what it looks like
but I'm not gonna know how accessible it is.
Again, don't forget to follow me on Twitch - RikkiPoynterPlays.
I stream Sunday through Friday,
sometimes on Saturday but that's only if I'm not filming.
And before you go, if you haven't, consider being a pledge on Patreon.
You get exclusive perks like music playlists once or twice a month,
written content that you won't see anywhere else
and Pen Pals if you go up high enough.
And I will see you later. Bye.
