Umu: So now we'll be reacting to a short film that is actually a highlight medley for AKMU's 2017 winter album.
U: This came out as a teaser before they released anything else, and it features I believe around 8 of their songs.
U: It starts off with a song called "Will Last Forever", and it doesn't actually mention it in the video anywhere, so just by the way.
U: Otherwise, throughout the video, there will be a little title that pops up on the left handed side, saying which song it is from the album.
Katie: Are you ready for this? Jarod: Yeah, as ready as I'll ever be.
J: Alright. (Katie and Jarod together): 3, 2, 1...
K: Begin! J: Pshhhhh~
J: I mean, can you really start any like video without like soft piano.
Elizabeth: I like the octaves.
Hugo: That's really pretty scenery.
James: Oh woah.
H: Oh my god, I love you guys.
Henry: I love them.
H: They're my favorite.
Kevin: Goddamn it! Ugh! Yunyi: (laughs)
Jarod: Filming a film, pshh pshh pshh. Katie: Filmception.
J: Filming, no, filming the filming of a film.
James: Don't forget about me, okay. Hugo: Aww, poor baby.
J: Oh.
Jarod: Ooh.
J: Smack them.
Elizabeth: Dude i'll straight up insult my brother in his face. I hate that.
Kevin: Yeah, I bet it's hard for siblings to be like a group... I bet these things happen...
Yunyi: Yeah. K: quite a bit.
Henry: (gasps) Elizabeth: I feel like you, you can't both do the same thing as siblings forever and like, not expect to have issues.
Peyton: He's very dramatic.
P: It went from like zero to one-hundred very quickly. Charlotte: I know!
C: Like what?! P: You're a bad sister. WE'RE DONE!
Henry: I definitely love my sister with all my heart, but like I could never work with her.
H: Like...
H: I love her, but like... you just work so differently.
Lindsey; Oh, is she back on the playground they were on in the other video?
L: I recognized those, those things.
Umu: The footage of those videos were taken from this. L: Okay.
L: Woah! I like how they just switched to acoustic in the middle, that was awesome.
Fiona: Yeah, that was really cool.
L: Oh he's like in, this is like his song-writing process, sitting in the back of a truck like...
F: He's trying to make it without her and like all the crew. L: Yeah.
L: This is him being like I'll show them by doing everything by himself.
Henry: I like them- that's funny... I like them both together, but they're also so great like apart.
H: I don't know.
Katie: (singing) Pachelbel's Canon...
K: Ooh, modal mixture.
Fiona: With the third girl, the third girl he finds.
Lindsey: He should just go back to the other girl from um... Give Love.
James: Man, that suitcase is heavy.
J: Ah, nah, it's fine.
Hugo: (laughs) I love this so much.
H: Bet you that guy's hot. wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it...
Peyton: Oh my god! These effects are killing me! Charlotte: I like it, it makes things clear- only if we had that in real life!
P: Can you image if every guy that was into you, his frickin' cheeks lit up red and then there were hearts around his head like...
C: You know, I think it'll be a lot easier, 'cause everyone's like ughh I don't want to tell you that I like you, 'cause then you'll know that I like you.
C: But then I'm like, isn't that the point?
P: (sigh) There's just so much... C: Like the worst that I'm going to say is that I don't like you in that way,
C: and then you can work on getting over me rather than having this whole like I don't know if she likes me or not, and it works the other way around too.
P: Some guys are scared of that.
Lindsey: (imitates singing)
L: Oh I love scat.
Jarod: Yeah! That's pretty cool.
Henry: Hilarious tech-piano effect.
Jarod: It's very like campy, which is very much what they're experiencing right now, this kind of experience.
Katie: This almost reminds me of like Mario. J: Yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah.
J: They're all on their little adventure. K: All the sound effects.
K: Yeah totally.
K: This is so funny.
Charlotte: Can you believe a world like that, you know you saw a tree in your dreams and you spent your whole life finding the tree,
C: and you know how many people are gonna pass you, and then which one would be like the-it person,
and then you just stand there and be like where are you~ like boy number 7!
Peyton: And you'll know they're right for you 'cause there'll be little bubbles around their heads.
Elizabeth: So the acoustic guitar seems to be his... Henry: Man mode. E: Yeah.
E: It's interesting they're both looking for other people.
E: But I assume they'll find their way back to each other eventually. Henry: Of course.
Kevin: What a...
K: The tone of this short film was way different from what I expected. Yunyi: Yeah.
Peyton: Not gonna lie, borderline creepy.
Charlotte: (singing) Gymnopedie, but like really messed up.
P: Hey girl come here! You wanna be in my music video?
C: It was like Gymnopedie and Pachebel's Canon had a baby just now. P: It's good.
Elizabeth: These songs have been kinda funky so far, it's very groovin'.
Henry: Their bass player's really good.
Jarod: That's groovy. Katie: Mhm.
K: Me, I'm like uhhh.
J: They're good in like minor blues.
K: Oh... shit. J: Yeah, go girl!
Peyton: Yikes. Charlotte: I still can't get over that.
C: Like the sound of Gymnopedie but Pachelbel's Canon, but then thrown in with some other weird chords that don't belong there.
P: Hey, those chords have a place.
C: (singing) weird.
Kevin: Choco-lady? Umu: Get ready.
K: My gosh.
K: Oh hey.
K: My goodness. Yunyi: (stammers) She returned it!
Henry: Ooh! Got his ass.
H: Can't you just be like, hey, can you be in my music video, not that hard. Elizabeth: Yeah.
Jarod: I like how when everything's like going not so well, the music isn't going so well either. Katie: Yeah, oh yeah that's true.
J: (imitating) Macchiato, oh my god I love it, I love it.
K: Ok, I think I know which one is going to be my favorite already.
Henry: It's also definitely like a real group. there you go.
Elizabeth: yeah there's been a lot of acoustic instruments in this.
Lindsey: What the heck was that? He just... he grabbed her hand and breathed on it.
Katie: I love- Jarod: A jazz song about coffee, I am behind that. K: Yeah, literally.
Fiona: I love, like how it started off with like the setting in the coffee shop with like the proper instrumental sounds.
Lindsey: Yeah.
Yunyi: Ahh~ Kevin: Dorian man.
Y: All of these songs are so great, the fuck.
K: Hey, I remember that mountain from one of, some other music video.
Fiona: I like how he pronounces vanilla and hazelnut. Lindsey: Yeah, the accent. F: Macchiato.
L: Oh, we saw this one, is this the...is this the...Last Goodbye one again?
F: Yeah. L: There was a campfire.
L: I recognized the shot of like the trees. F: I recognized the campfire. L: Very good.
F: Is she going to be bad at singing? L: Probably.
F: And like you can't beat a sibling duo for the harmonies, like their voices genetically are similar. L: Yeah.
L: But also... F: They just have that like great combo.
L: But also they've been together forever and you can't just go find someone like at a coffee shop to replace your like forever singing partner. F: Ooh, you're hot, you'd be good.
Charlotte: Yeah, effective way to a girl's heart, wanna make a constipated face at you.
Peyton: She mistook a kissing face for a focused face.
C: I just got constipated so it really wasn't that clear.
P: Yeah, see, he had the audiation stare.
P: Last Goodbye.
Yunyi: We heard this song before. Kevin: That's true, but...
Umu: This is Last Goodbye. K: I remember the songs!
Y: This is a very basic progression. K: Exactly.
Elizabeth: Man they really like taking like a little fragment of, like a little motive, and then repeating it.
Henry: Mhm. E: It's not like a really smooth line, their choruses, kinda choppy.
H: Well, one of my- another thing I really liked that happens um... kind of specifically about the vocals
H: that they do all the time, is that especially with English words, they focus on one specific part of the word and they repeat it,
H: but it's not like the operative part of the word really,
H: like for the word reality, they didn't repeat real, they repeated ality, which like doesn't have any like meaning on its own, you know.
H: It was just kind of funny, they do that occasionally.
Jarod: A new partner...
J: but will it last?
Katie: Dun dun dun. Oh she fell in, yo that must be cold.
J: And, ruining expensive clothing. K: Yeah.
Kevin: Scat singing?
Yunyi: Yeah, she does that a lot.
Elizabeth: I really like her voice.
Henry: Her voice is the greatest.
Lindsey: Woah. That's not what I was expecting the beat to be like in this.
Charlotte: We went all tropical.
Jarod: Yeah, it's got that really like sandy beach kind of guitar sound, you know like the...
Katie: Oh yeah. J: I don't know how to describe it other than it meets the kind of sound you usually hear in sandy beaches. K: There's bongos?
J: There you go. K: That's why. Congos actually, congos are the deep ones.
K: Smooth. J: Smooth, smoother than I'll ever be.
Kevin: I like the bare-bones instrumentation in this.
Yunyi: But the upbeats are stronger than the downbeats, you hear that? There's like nothing on the downbeats.
Elizabeth: See, there's a sentence where they have like small fragment, small fragment, and then they sort of complete the idea.
E: They do that in all of their songs. Henry: Yup.
Peyton: Yeah, it's kinda an interesting mix like of like the guitar and then like drum things but like also the electronic sounds. Charlotte: Yeah.
Lindsey: She misses her brother, what was I expecting. She's, oh! Woah, it now it says I miss my brother.
Peyton: for a sec I thought- Charlotte: Is that Pocky? They have Pocky?
Umu: They're in Japan by the way.
C: They have Pocky?! P: They do have Pocky. C: I love Pocky!
P: Ooh! Nord. I love it.
Fiona: Oh my god~ Lindsey: So cute. (both squealing)
Katie: And I bet these are real home videos.
Jarod: That's adorable.
K: That's so weird!
K: I've never seen the word umbilical cord in a song ever.
Lindsey: And now we're flashing back to when he lost his beanie.
L: Oh wait! It's his sister.
L: Oh, she was the third girl, like he left to go get his hat and missed it. F: Yeah.
L: eh- that's what I'm guessing.
Elizabeth: So this is the first one that I've noticed where like the male's layered...
E: voice's layered in different notes to make a harmony. Usually I feel like I've just been hearing them each singing individually.
E: It's less harmonically driven.
Peyton: Oh we going double? Charlotte: You got me.
Elizabeth: Yeah, just leave the other girl in the middle of the prairie.
Henry: Just be like, uh see ya. E: Peace.
Fiona: See ya, enjoy this field. Lindsey: Bye.
L: Oh, Way Back Home, that makes sense for a title of a song that would happen at this point in the film.
L: Oh, his voice sounds really deep in this.
L: But also still, that, it's got that distinctive timbre.
Yunyi: But where did the other girl go.
Kevin: The moment he thinks of his sister, she disappears. Y: God!
Y: Maybe she was a figment of his imagination. : Yeah.
Y: Maybe they were both figments of imagination. K: Yes.
Jarod: nice little back beat-esque kinda thing going here.
Charlotte: It's got like an old like 2000s pop R&B summer day vibe.
C: It's interesting, I really like it.
Henry: Aww, now I miss my sister.
H: I've definitely have talked about her before, AKMU reminds me of my sister so much.
Jarod: I like, this is like the song that they're getting back together and I feel like the harmonies in this one are the most wholesome.
Katie: It's unison. J: Exactly. It feels wholesome, you know. I don't know, it just feels...
K: This is the first time I guess they're singing the same pitch together.
Kevin: I like the last song, it did this thing where it was A minor, and then it turned into A major which is the dominant of the main key,
K: so it was like a play with minor v and major V.
Charlotte: It's back! Peyton: It is. It's coming to haunt you.
C: See, and then they stop it and they're like suspenseful chooord and then you're like where's the rest of it it never happens.
P: Well, sometimes people like to use melodies from other songs, reharm them and put them in their own songs, so it's just the world we live in honey.
C: Caramel macchiato. (together) Caramel macchiato! P: Macchiato!
P: Gotta get into that nasal part- C: Also I think this video has inspired me like literally with every person that I just think is beautiful, I'm just gonna go, "Hey gorgeous."
C: And that's going to be socially acceptable now. P: Yeah.
Kevin: It could have been shot and edited in a way that is more tear inducing, or more, yeah.
Yunyi: I don't know, it's quirky. K: Yeah, I think the very last scene is very good, it's just a one take of them
K: like, reuniting but they're still teasing each other, it's really nice. Y: I don't know, 'cause it's just like AKMU is never really tear inducing,
Y: like no matter what they do, they touch on like dark, darker subjects but they always do it in a really light-hearted way. K: Yeah.
Y: And this is kind of what it was. K: Yeah.
Elizabeth: This is, this is actually a really good teaser for their album I think.
E: 'cause you got a sense of like all the songs but they were woven into the story so, it didn't feel like you were watching an advertisement.
Henry: Yeah that's definitely true.
Lindsey: Woah, it does not feel like it has been 20 minutes.
Umu: Yeah, so out of those 8 songs, which one was your favorite?
Fiona: Probably the Choco-lady, because I love how he pronounce like vanilla and macchiato and like, everything was just so cute, and then,
F: I love the instruments.
L: What was the one I commented on? I can't remember, it was one word. U: Reality?
L: Reality. Yes, that was the one. That one was so cool sounding, F: Yeah, Reality.
L: kinda jazzy, kinda rock, kinda like an old rock and roll kind of feel to it, but then also kind of poppy, I don't know, it was just really awesome.
Hugo: I like the one where you get the jazz band together, it was like Umu: Choco-Lady!
H: It was jazzy, it was cool, it was fun. I liked a lot of them.
James: I liked the one where he's looking back at camcorder and you watch all the home videos.
U: The one that mentioned the umbilical cord? H: Yup. J: Yup, that one.
H: Get it, 'cause it's an umbilical cord, 'cause it's an umbilical cord. U: That's so funny Hugo.
Charlotte: I liked Chocolady.
Peyton: I think Live was my favorite one.
Katie: I think we have the same favorite, I'm assuming, I could be wrong. Jarod: Yeah.
Umu: Cho- oh... K: 3, 2, 1, Chocolady? J: Yes.
J: I forgot the name of it, but it's the one about the coffee and the jazz, I'm just like oh shoot I don't know the name but that's the one I liked. K: yeah, jazzy coffee one, same.
J: Yeah, that one, no I really liked that 'cause there're like talking about my favorite things, jazz and coffee.
K: Same, it was awesome. Also it was just like really good harmonies and like instrumentation.
Yunyi: I actually think it's Chocolady. It was a really good track, I'm going to go back and listen to that one. Kevin: Oh yeah, it was a really good track.
K: I think my favorite is the upbeat one he sang in his car the one with (singing) Umu: (singing) Reality~ Reality ality ality.
K: That and Chocolady, Reality wins by a little bit.
K: Wow.
Umu: So, what did you think about the layout of these songs in this short film? Did you like how it was laid out, or did you feel it was really sudden, or did you think it conveyed what was going on story wise?
Charlotte: Chocolady conveyed what was going on 'cause he was like can I buy you a coffee, what do you like to drink, you're hot like hot chocolate, can you be in my music video?
Peyton: Damn girl, gna get you some coffee bc you so mm mmm mmm like caramel macchiato.
Henry: I liked that this was like you don't get a full song, you just get little flavors of like, if you liked everything about this, then you'll love the album, sort of like see the soundtrack you know.
Umu: Okay, so you enjoyed Reality, what did you like about what you heard of Reality?
Elizabeth: Uhh, I just thought it was peppy, I'm not a fan of like the sort of more romantic, slower, sweeter songs, I'm like no, come on, when I listen to music, I wanna be energized.
U: What about you Henry? Did you have a favorite from these?
H: I thought they were all great, I liked them all. I mean, I don't know, that's such a bad answer.
H: But like, I guess I really liked the song he was singing in the coffee shop. U: Choco-lady! H: Yeah, that one was great.
H: I liked this vibe of like doing a, teaser movie, short film you know.
Yunyi: Wow, so that's it. Kevin: It was more melancholy, it was a nice yeah.
Y: But just like the opening scene of them like all my friends are gone, it was like aww, that's real, but I'm glad it took a different turn than that,
Y: 'cause if not, I might have been crying for this whole thing.
Katie: Yeah, I liked this idea, and I thought they executed it well.
Jarod: Yeah, no I really, I really dug this because at first I'm like woah, a 20 minute short film on, you know, K-pop? This is gonna be pretty heavy.
J: But the thing is like it played really well, I really liked it actually, like I wish there was like more of this,
J: because what I think it does a really good job of is it highlights the album, you know.
J: it highlights the story of the album, it kind of brings everything together because very often times it's like we listen to a ton of tracks,
J: we listen to like, you know we listen to whatever the hit is of the album, but we don't get to listen to it as a whole,
J: and this sells it as a whole and I really like that because it's like ideally, when you release an album, everything kinda tells a story together,
J: everything kinda works together, but often times that's not how it's listened to, everything is kinda listened independently,
J: whereas I liked this focus on the wholistic product, and it was just really fun 'cause- it was just really fun.
J: You get a little taste of everything and you want more, you want more of Chocolady, you want more of everything, J: but again, as you said, it's a teaser, so, snap.
