Hi welcome to asiangarden2table.
This video is about growing pumpkin, precisely Chinese or Asian pumpkins.
For different varieties, pumpkin's texture and flavor varies.
Generally speaking, Chinese pumpkin has fine and moist texture and nice sweetness
while western pumpkin tastes sandy and a bit dry.
Chinese pumpkin can grow well in big temperature range and has very good disease resistance.
The best growing temperature is 65~86 F. It grows fine at temperature higher than 95 degree,
while western pumpkin will start to suffer disease problem when temperature close to 86 F
In Florida, I can grow Chinese pumpkin from early spring to later autumn,
but only spring or autumn for western pumpkin.
The easy way to tell which pumpkin you are growing is the seed.
Chinese pumpkin seed looks like zucchini's, flat with rough surface;
western pumpkin is full with smooth and shining surface.
Pumpkin seed is easy to germinate so can be sowed directly.
At temperature higher than 68 F, emergence happens in 3~5 days.
From sowing to fruiting, there are early maturing varieties
which develop female flowers as soon as vines start to climb,
medium and late maturing varieties which grow vivid vines at the beginning
and grow female flowers later.
Early maturing varieties grow fruits early but bear less fruits per plant.
Medium or late maturing varieties grow vivid vines and bear more fruits per plant,
but may over grow and take up too much space.
Here is a frequent asked question.
Some gardeners find out their pumpkin grow female flowers first,
no male flower so pollination cannot be done.
This is normal and nothing to concern.
There will be more female flowers and male flowers grow out later
and will always be enough for fruiting.
In fact, pumpkin will grow many female flowers
and at the end only some of them will successfully set the fruits
,so no need to worry some female flowers are wasted.
Pumpkin flowers in the morning. Manual pollination will help to increase fruiting rate.
Personally I prefer Chinese pumpkin.
It is easier to grow.
Young pumpkin can be eaten like Zucchini, bigger one is great for braising
and old pumpkin develops great sweetness and fine texture.
To harvest old pumpkin for long time storage, keep the fruits on the vine
until the vines start to dry out.
The green skin will turn yellow or orange and become thick and hard.
The older the pumpkin, the longer it can be stored.
Younger pumpkin should be consumed as soon as possible.
Pumpkin is very easy to grow.
If you have enough space, you can let the vines crawl on ground to wherever it can go.
It will cover a big area and the produce may not be reliable.
The better way to grow pumpkin is to direct the vines on trellis and prune them properly.
It will have less disease and bugs problem and reliable produce,
at the same time your garden will look neat and nice.

Stanley Kubrick's Pragmatic Sensibility - Art Regard - Duration: 11:12.
Cinema is a mischievous media.
With an intrinsic cruelty, Film explores the irrational conditions of contemporary society.
It is through the film experience that we often separate ourselves from The Collective,
in order to point beyond the traditions that bind us to the social normative conventions.
But to reexamine culture is often to recreate it, to become a "master", an "auteur"
of your own journey.
Films are fragmented portrayals of this uncanny exchange: they express and question our Reality,
shaking our perception, inviting us to recreate normality beyond the diegetic space.
My fascination with Cinema lies in the frightening notion that the cinematic gaze of the world
has shifted my own.
Cinema stands face to face with absurdity.
The irrationality that is born in the confrontation between human nature and the deeply uncaring
external world.
Looking back to Stanley Kubrick's filmography only through the notion of Adaptation felt
incomplete to me.
It is clear that Kubrick's cinema reveals the cartography of a great philosophical system:
exploring Truth through a strong pragmatic sensibility, one that goes beyond the cinematic
experience only to mark the darkest corners of our imagination.
Beyond the aesthetic, beyond his pragmatic outlook on film as a medium, Kubrick unnerved
the spectator, creating a diegetic space in which the tension between the Self and the
Other was almost unbearable.
War, morality
Love, betrayal
Kubrick's themes are never easy.
Often highlighting what is the most negative of the human condition, presenting us a strong
emotional detachment, a discomforting parody of the world we live in.
Never unchallenging, Kubrick's films are as much about Man as they are about the relationship
between one man and mankind, the self and the collective, spectator and film.
But instead of raising mirrors of perception, showing us how to relate to the world of our
characters, Kubrick's films never take away from the audience its sense of autonomy.
Instead, Kubrick demands from the viewer to reexamine, to empathize, transmuting the classic
passive spectator into an active agent in the making of the story, the most important
puzzle-piece in his cinematic experience; a spectator that is not told but is guided
to critical thinking.
And just like that, Kubrick's cinema denies a passive nihilism, recognizing the monstrosity
reality of human condition, claiming Plato's essence of reality in a "brain cinema".
For as Deleuze noticed, "in Kubrick, the world itself is a brain,
there is identity of brain and world
as in the great circular table in Doctor Strangelove, the giant computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Overlook Hotel
in The Shining" (Deleuze).
Kubrick treats reality as part of a game: the entire world obeying a phantasmatic logic,
if not indeed a nightmare one, which no longer has anything to do with the real.
The effect is to break down characters, space, gesture, mise-en-scene.
The camera movement that leads us inside the story, creating new perspectives in an intense
configuration of elements, conveying a sense of something both dynamic and still.
It becomes clear that Kubrick's aesthetics choices result in a merging of what is represented
and what is representation itself.
However, Kubrick's simultaneous concentration on composition, careful disposition of color,
light, framing, only serves to reveal that to experience a meticulously planned film
photography is to experience the shifting perspectives it opens up.
To observe how the boundaries between reality and imagined, the inner and the exterior world
can alter our experience of meaning.
Faced with the human condition, armed with critical thinking, Kubrick's spectator now
deal with the confrontation of the irrational longing for clarity.
His films exploring what it means to be human, what it means to perceive through our human
bodies, conditioned by our culture and our relationship with our own existence.
Denying objectivity, often leaving us to find answers in an ambiguous use of archetypes
and allegories of the collective human experience, Kubrick depicts man as a violent amalgamation
of unconscious drives and desires, but with an increased capacity for reason.
Stanley Kubrick's storytelling was concerned as much with the ambiguity of Reality as it
was with human condition; our drives and hypocrisies, man's weakness and strength that shapes
the collective society one person after the other.
But if Kubrick's universe is cold, it is also godless, stripped of morality.
Art observing a universe devoid of meaning, not providing guidance or solace.
The cinematic language going beyond a symbolic space, attempting to question what is dogmatism
and rationality, provoking viewers to a mode of self-transcendence, seeking what Lacan
calls the Real, "that place where things exist in their material opacity and radiance,
prior to their negation by the symbolic, leading his viewers to experience nothingness and
emptiness in an almost material way".
Cinema as a wound, opening, and closing.
And as Kubrick's characters look beyond death, Kubrick's
beyond their animal roots,
Kubrick's pragmatic sensibility encompass the trauma of our existential fears
presenting us with an imperfect world
just like our own.
And while existence is subverted and questioned
undone, unworked
as it were, from within,
so is the Film.
