The Power of Water for Kids: How Erosion by Water Shapes Landforms for Children - FreeSchool - Duration: 3:13.
You're watching FreeSchool!
The earth is covered in many different landforms.
Landforms are natural features of the earth's surface, like mountains, deserts, and plains.
Although they may seem permanent, they are constantly changing, and much of that change
is caused by a surprising force: water.
Water changes the land through erosion.
Erosion occurs when the surface of the earth wears away.
Water can break down rock and dirt and carry the particles away to another place.
This changes the shape of the landscape.
The ocean is a powerful cause of erosion.
Waves beat upon the shoreline, breaking up rocks along the coast.
Sometimes this forms cliffs.
Other times, it may form beaches.
Still other times it can create rock formations sticking up out of the water, called sea stacks.
The way the ocean erodes the shore depends on how the water moves and what kind of rock
the shore is made of.
Rivers can make big changes in the land, too, and the Grand Canyon is a famous example of this.
Over many years, the Colorado River has carried away particles of dirt and rock, carving its
path deeper and deeper into the ground.
Today the Grand Canyon is over 6,000 feet or 1,800 meters deep and 18 miles or 29 km
wide in some places.
Water does not have to be liquid to cause erosion – ice can do it, too.
Glaciers are sometimes called 'rivers of ice' because they are huge slabs of ice and snow
that move very slowly across the landscape.
As glaciers move, they break off and scrape away pieces of rock and stone.
Glaciers can create many different landforms, including deep valleys, lakes, and fjords,
as they carve their way across the land.
Although water is not the only force that changes the landscape of our planet, it is
an important one.
Whether it's a whole ocean or just some rain, a little water can make a big difference.
I hope you enjoyed learning about erosion caused by water today.
Goodbye till next time!

What Happens If You Eat Radioactive Food? - Duration: 3:44.
Hey there! Welcome to Life Noggin!
Wow that's a lot of bees!? Well this is good we need to save the bees! Okay!
Radiation can be pretty terrifying.
We've all heard the stories of what happened in places like Chernobyl and the dangers of
nuclear fallout.
But what if you weren't just /in/ a place like that, but actually /ate/ something that
was radioactive?
Well, this may sound a bit surprising, but you probably already have… at least to some extent
That's because many of the foods that you eat are actually radioactive.
This can happen in a bunch of different ways -- radioactive materials in the soil can get
into your crops, and fish and shellfish can pick it up from the water they're swimming
in or the seafloor.
Radioactive materials can even get into your /water/.
Radiation can also sometimes show up in your food after you humans perform nuclear tests
and discharge radioactive materials into the environment.
And you can find some of the more radioactive foods as you're strolling around your local
grocery store.
These may include bananas, which can contain a radioactive isotope
called potassium-40, and brazil nuts, which can have radium levels over 1000 times what
you might see in other foods.
And it's not just food and water.
Some amounts of radiation can be found all around you.
It can even be in the air that you breathe.
But before you get all worried and start walking around in a Hazmat suit, this isn't as bad
as it sounds.
The radiation we're talking about here isn't on the same level of what comes along with
atomic bombs and nuclear fallout.
So then what if you were to take a bite of food that was way more radioactive?
Something with more dangerous levels than what we just talked about.
Maybe some food that was affected by nuclear fallout.
While it can be hard to tell for certain what it would do to you, we can get an idea of
what might happen by looking at the effects that consuming radioactive material like that
has on other animals.
Let's look at a 2014 study done on the biological impacts of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear
Power Plant accident in Japan.
In this study, researchers wanted to know what would happen if larvae of the pale blue
grass butterfly consumed leaves that were tainted by radioactive materials, in this
case radioactive cesium, that they collected from the polluted localities.
When the larvae were fed the leaves, mortality and abnormality rates sharply went up at low
doses in response to the cesium that they were ingesting.
So basically, it wasn't good.
The researchers also concluded that, at least for the pale blue grass butterfly, it was
realistic for them to have a polluted diet after something like a nuclear power plant
accident, and that the same could likely be said for other organisms living in the polluted
area.
Again, not that great of news.
So like these butterflies, your mortality and abnormality rates could go up after eating
highly radioactive food.
And according to the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry, one way radium can enter
your body is if it is swallowed.
If this happens, some of it can enter the blood stream and be carried to other parts
of your body, like your /bones/!
And if you are exposed to high levels of radium over a long period of time, it can result
in things like anemia, cataracts, fractured teeth, or even cancer.
So all in all, you're probably fine to keep munching on those brazil nuts and bananas
Or if you're like Triangle Bob I guess eat a giant thing of radioactive waste? Don't do that.
He shouldn't be doing that. You guys don't do that either.
Where you surprised to hear any of this? Let me know in the comment section below,
or tell us, what should we talk about next?
Have you seen our new series Dear Blocko

If a person gets rabies, it can be pretty serious. That's because it's a viral infection
that can affect your nervous system

Utah Film Industry & It's Effects on Rural Counties - Duration: 28:51.
How many major motion pictures and TV
series do you think have been made here
in Utah? Can you name some of them?
Stage Coach, Planet of the Apes,
Maverick, The Sand Lot, Grizzly Adams.
Well, the number isn't measured in
dozens, or even hundreds, it currently sits
at just under 1000. So along the same
vain, how much economic impact does
that translate into? In aggregate that is
hard to calculate, but just considering the
five projects currently underway in Utah,
the state estimates that they will have 36
million dollars of direct impact on Utah's
local communities. So that is what we
are going to look at today on the County
Seat. The State film commission and its
relationship to Utah's counties. We will
start with our Basics: a look at what lures
movie producers to Utah in the First
Place.
choose Utah to make a movie, what would be
on it?
Well, one thing to consider would have to be
scenery. Utah has some of the most Iconic
landscapes in the entire United States, perhaps
the world. Or maybe even the universe!
Doesn't matter what backdrop you want for
your movie scene, Utah is likely to have a real
landscape that will fit the bill.
Another would have to be proximity. You can
cross the state from one end to the other in a
period of 7 short hours. Most landscapes from
alpine to the surface of another planet are
within two hours, a modern city, and a small
town from the turn of the 20th Century, not
even 30 minutes apart.
You would have to include a willing labor force.
Utah is a right to work state meaning that film
producers can choose to use Union or a
nonunion labor force. There are five
universities and two community colleges
offering courses in film making across the state,
each with a long list of graduates.
Another plus is that Utah communities are quite
welcoming to outsiders coming in to take on a
project. Most communities embrace films
headed their way.
Finally, Utah is a very business friendly state as
far as creating an easy path to set up shop.
With so much going for it why aren't all films
made in Utah? Well, even with all the plusses
that Utah brings to the movie making table,
movies still take money, tons of it and with how
few of them make buko bucks, the risk to make
a movie can be staggering. That is why many
states (some with far fewer things found on our
list) are offering money to movie companies to
come spend their movie making war chests in
their local communities. To stay competitive,
Utah is also in the tax incentive game.
TO help bring movie crews to Utah's local
communities, the state of Utah has provided
Tax incentives to encourage films to come to
Utah. The state will pay up to a 25% tax credit
or a cash rebate! That's quite an incentive to
move your production here. But it is not just a
hand out for movie location bragging rights.
There are also strings attached to that money to
ensure that Utah benefits from being the "on
location" capitol of the world.
As an example: to qualify for the incentive, the
production has to use a percentage of Utah
Crew members on the production staff and
spend a good amount of the budget on Utah
goods and services. These strings prove to be a
windfall for local communities when a movie
does get the green light to film. Think about it;
sometimes a crew of a few hundred people
shows up to shoot in a certain location. These
people need a place to sleep, eat and places to
relax on the little time they have off. The
locations also get notoriety and exposure for
filming a movie in their town, exposure that can
lead to new tourist dollars in the future. Of
course it doesn't hurt a town to be known for
having a famous Hollywood actor stay there
either. So what does all this incentive look like
when it comes to a county? We will find out
when Chad comes back to talk to the state and
a local county film commission on the County
Seat.
Welcome back to the County Seat we
are talking about films in Utah today
what kind of impact they have on
rural counties joining us for our
conversation is Virginia Pierce head
of the Utah Film Commission
We are also joined by our good friend
Kelly Stowle from Kane County who is
the film director for Kane County and
Kelly has lots of stuff filmed all over
down there.
Another beautiful place to take
pictures.
Thank you all so much for joining us.
Were you the first county to do
movies or become recognized for it,
the Perry Brothers they kind of
recruited film out there didn't they?
Yes, Utah has an extensive history of
film making and it goes back to the
1920's the famed Perry Brothers who
are based out of Cedar City they went
to LA and promoted the area for film
and the first film came in about 1924
and they took the rail up to LA to
Cedar City and the rest is history.
How does the Utah state film
commission it seems to me they
became a powerhouse around the
time that Calvin Ramptom was
governor in the 60's and it was like
let's really make something about the
geography of Utah. Please tell us a
little bit about the film commission.
As Kelly said we have had a long
history in film and we have had some
boon periods and some smaller
periods I think in the 60's and early
70's there was another boon period
going and in northern Utah they
decided to say we need some state
agency that can help regulate and
encourage film production in the
state. So the film commission started
in 1974 and we really exist to market
the state of Utah the locations
obviously are number 1 selling point
we have the gorgeous red rocks and
the mountains and all the things that
people love about Utah we also
promote our crew and our talent and
our industry resources that we have
here and we are able to compete
against much larger film programs
and states because of the natural
resources that we have.
I find that interesting that you have
so much stuff here so many resources
if I were a film maker and I wanted to
be efficient say okay I need a small
town and a big city and I need a
remote location and within an hour I
can do all of them if I go down to
Kanab.
Exactly.
So I have all the things I need I can
send somebody out to find set
locations that should be an incentive
to get them there but we have to
compete with a lot of tax incentives.
How did that happen?
Yes, tax incentives have been the
name of the game for feature films in
the last 20 years. States like Georgia
and LA saw an ability to compete and
take some of the business from
California and they started a tax
incentive program really was a tax
credit back on what you spend and
Utah got in the game around 2004
and our current program has been in
existence since 2011 which is part tax
credit part cash rebate and meant to
allow us to compete with some of
those bigger states because it is most
states and countries around the
world do have some kind of tax
incentive program so it was really
build into the budget of most feature
films.
The incentives help us become more
competitive otherwise we would not
be getting some of these projects we
just have to be able to compete.
Does that make you feel bad that you
have all this beautiful film country
down in Kane County and you have to
bribe somebody to come out?
We don't have to bribe all of them a
select few projects that take
advantage of the incentive and we
have a range of projects from TV
shows to commercials music videos
all the way to the big production that
are big enough to take advantage of
the incentives.
if you want us to give you some of
our tax money what are you going to
do?
Incentive program is set up to allow
us to compete but also is an
economic driver. First and foremost
you have to prove that you are going
to be spending a significant amount
of money in Utah our motion picture
incentive program starts at 500,000
dollars spend and most of the films
we are looking at are spending over a
million that is on the ground
spending in Utah. That does not
include the Tom Cruise salaries as he
is not a Utah tax payer it is about
spending money in Utah with Utah
businesses and hiring Utah local
those are requirement to spend a
certain amount of money and to hire
a certain amount of crew.
So when you say a 500,000 dollar
spend that means you just cannot
spend 500,000 dollars on best boys
you have to hire best boys from Utah
to make the whole thing happen.
Does that really help counties out?
It does we have benefited greatly
from the film incentive program from
the Utah Film Commission in general I
hate to just focus on the film
incentive because that is just a tiny
little piece of it. We get a lot of
referral from the Utah Film
Commission for instance they
become the point of contact for a lot
of production companies and they
are able to help direct them to where
they need to go.
We use our regional film
commissioners a ton we need those
people on the ground around the
entire state to help us someone
wants to shoot in Kane county I don't
want to answer those questions I
want to look to a local who knows
the resources and knows the area
Kelly has done an outstanding job of
really knowing his area in the
businesses and resources he has to
offer.
and do you go out to recruit those
sort of things. What do you do bring
people to Utah other than tax
incentives?
We make quarterly trips to LA we are
spending a lot of time talking to
studios talking to commercial
production houses commercials are a
huge part of the investment that
happens in rural Utah because they
do come for the locations so imagine
you are a tire or car commercial
trying to think of others.
There is more products in the world
than ever right now and it is my goal
that we have something being filmed
all the time.
So we really use those trips to LA the
same way that the Goulding's did in
1940 went out to LA showed pictures
of Monument Valley to John Ford
convinced him to come to Monument
Valley to shoot his film Searchers and
stay at their lodge, very smart
business move. We are doing the
same thing we are showing locations
we are talking about the resources
the great crew we have and we have
built up such an industry here it is an
easy place to work.
How big of an impact is this for
somebody like Kane County got what
Virginias point we get a lot of repeat
business so we form relationships
with the production companies and
we become the go to place for them
and we have a lot of landscape
diversity you got everything from the
high mountains to forests to desert to
whatever you need.
I was going to say it speaks to Kelly's
ability to kind of get out there an
hustle the market and the county and
I think other counties could learn a
lot from that because it is about
someone who shoots a commercial in
Kanab and knows now that Kelly
knows all the people and knows how
to get what they need when they are
thinking of shooting their next
commercial they could go wide
variety and place or they could just
call Kelly and he could set it up for
them.
have all these people coming here a
commercial let's say a 30 second
commercial they pick the location
how much money does that actually
bring to a community. How long are
they there how many rooms do they
take.
It depends on the size of the crew
and how long they stay. Some of
them can be massive and
unmanageable and overwhelming
but some are small we like the big
projects the big projects spend write
big checks.
Give me an example of one.
Well Room Ten a Nicholas Cage film
shot in Kanab 2 years ago and there
Utah spend was a little over 2 million
dollars. I would say at least half of
that was pend in and around Kane
County they came for a month to
shoot the film and shot several local
businesses including the hotel that
usually closes down for the winter so
this was a shot in the arm for them
that were able to stay open and they
did a big makeover of the hotel and it
was a really fun project and it instills
a lot of community pride as well
there is a direct spending and the
direct economic impact but I think
there is this whole other side of it as
it makes your proud to be where you
are from and people are posting
pictures of the hotels and Nick Cage
is here is making a movie.
What kind of things does a movie
crew buy when in town? Obviously
they rent the sets location rentals.
Yes, hotels huge part of it. Meals.
Food. Local crew salaries we try to
have a crew base that we can plug in
as much as we can sometimes these
jobs are highly specialized and we do
not have that so they do bring in a lot
of their own people. Gasoline and
equipment rentals?
Do they wipe out the hardware
stores?
Yes, they do, Construction lumber.
We had a movie in a couple of years
ago they ended up painting the inside
of a cave out on some private
property and they spent several days
painting the inside of this massive
cave and they bought a lot of paint to
do that and the local hardware store
was just great they just loved it they
meet them early and did whatever
they needed to do to take care of
them that is the attitude we try to
have business friendly and the can do
attitude.
Does Utah have a good base of
people that permanently reside here
that are specialist in film?
We definitely do have pockets. All
along the Wasatch Front we have
probably around 800 highly
specialized highly skilled professional
crew members that have been
working a long time in the industry
St. George we have less than that but
still a few significant professional
crew. Moab another pocket it is
about we are trying to help regional
communities basics what we call PA
so production assistant so the go to
run around do errands but know how
to behave on a set so we have a
program where we are helping
regional communities train those
people up so they can say sure we do
not have a camera operator that can
work at the level on a Nick Cage film
that you will need but we do have
plenty of people that know how to
behave on set they know how to be
quiet wear their headset and talk on
the radio and all those things you sort
of take for granted.
Extras a pool of extras we did a
casting call for a large production last
October and over 3000 people
responded who all across the state.
For each of you one last thought
what is the one thing people should
know about the film industry in Utah
that our viewers do not know.
On a state level the film industry
brings in almost 70 million dollars last
year which is a significant part of our
diverse economy also as Kelly said it
brings in cultural pride we can all
point to the Butch Cassidy and the
Sundance Kid, The Searchers,
Stagecoach, all these classic films that
have been shot in Utah that many of
them in rural Utah, 127 Hours or
Thelma and Louise that we want to
continue to have those films shot in
Utah so that the next generation can
have those classics movies too.
Of the 70 million how much did you
pay in tax incentives?
It's around 20 percent that we pay.
So come out ahead locally.
Kanab is known for being little
Hollywood it would not be little
Hollywood without some filmmaking
going on and just like it was
happening decades ago it's still
happening now and we would invite
people to get involved and get
registered with the state film
commission if you are interested in
working in the business and a lot of
colleges have programs so people
should get involved and it's a great
business to work in.
Great thank you both so much and
Kelly thank you for driving all the way
from the movie set to come up to our
little humble studio set. Virginia I
appreciate it very much and thanks
for taking the time. When we come
back we will take a personal look
inside the movie industry to see how
advanced it is here in Utah when we
come back on The County Seat.
Welcome back to The County Seat. I
have had the opportunity to work on a
couple of major films here in Utah when I
was much younger and more dashing. As
is the broadly accepted perception, I was
working with Hollywood directors,
photographers and casting agents. But
did you know that for many prominent
film makers, Utah is not a place they rent
to make a film, it is a place they live. As
we find out "On the Ground".
Been shooting in Utah 16 years, 17 years have
done productions all over the state, St George
to Northern Utah,
And we love Utah because of the great diversity
on locations here; you can go from snowy
mountains and down to the desert within a half
hour drive.
So one of the reasons that Utah is such a great
place to film is that we have such talented crew
such talented actors and also that film studios
are being built there an amazing film studio in
park city that is state of the art
We are at Utah Film Studios it opened in June of
2015 with the TV series Blood and Oil from ABC
they were in the building for about 6 months
and we have had an assortment of independent
film commercials music videos corporate events
ever since and now we are hosting the TV series
Yellowstone, The studio serves as a platform for
a number of different things of course job
creation when a show chooses Utah and
ultimately choses the studio that leads to a lot
of jobs in the film industry in all different
departments a platform also for local economy
the hotels, the people who rent out condos,
hardware stores ,the laundry facilities and
restaurants all benefit from having a show like
Yellowstone or another shows that are here for
months and months at a time.
All our key crew members are from Utah so our
production designer our costume designer our
cinematographer our writers our producers
they are all local Utah base because we have a
great talent base here,
Utah is such a wonderful state for a support
system for financial support as well as physical
support as any amenities you need in the state,
rental houses are very prevalent in the state as
well as talented actors and crew pool
The film commissions excellent the crews here
are amazing the landscapes are amazing we do
a lot of science fiction and fantasy and in those
genres its important to not look like earth or try
to have something fantastical or imaginary and
there is nothing more impossible and
outlandish then Utah landscapes we shoot in a
lot of remote locations and do a lot of stuff all
around the state to get the very best that there
is in Utah
We love filming here and that's what keeps us
here is the vast a array of beauty that we have
available to us
We will be right back with a closing look
at the movies here in Utah.
Welcome back to The County Seat. We
thought we would close the show back
where we started. Trying to recount the
movies that have been made in Utah
through the years. From practically every
corner of the states at some point in time
a movie or a TV series has been made
here. So we leave you today with a few
of the images from the thousand films of
