A necktie in the Granite Stitch.

Hi Guys, I'm Kristen and welcome to Studio Knit!

This is a fun quick knit it's easy to memorize and oh so macho.

it's really fun to create new accessories with gorgeous knit stitch patterns this is created in

a high-quality linen yarn and it's a fashion accessory that guys will look

great in for years to come I have a link in the description below where you can

pin this pattern to Pinterest and I also have a whole playlist full of other knit

stitch patterns that would be really fun to make more neckties with as well after

this video make sure to check out my other seed stitch necktie pattern it has

been really popular all over Ravelry so let's get started with this beautiful

granite stitch knitting pattern for our necktie so to begin with our materials

now I am using a linen yarn and size 4 needles you can actually use any size

yarn and needles that you'd like along with tapestry needle scissors and a

measuring tape this is a fingering yarn and I want to make it a little bit

thicker so I'm actually going to be knitting with two strands at once makes

it go a little faster and the complete written pattern is linked down in the

description below from my website so of course we are going to begin with our

beloved slipknot we're going to be casting on any number of stitches to get

the desired width of your tie now because you will have different yarn and

needles the number of stitches is totally up to you

let's take a quick look at the granite stitch so Row 1 is simply knitting and

then row 2 this is a decrease stitch this is knitting two together and you

just do that all the way down the row and Row three is increasing it back up

so it's knit front and back and that kfb I have technique links down in the

description below as well and our last row row far is simply purling and we

just repeat this granite stitch until our piece is twenty-one inches in length

now if you think about an STI it gets thinner and that will actually make the

rest of this project go faster so we are going to be decreasing and then just

doing the garter stitch until our piece reaches 58 inches in length total and

from there all we have to do is just a regular bind off and then taking our

tapestry needle we are going to cut our yarn and weave in our ends super simple

now we're almost done I'm going to add a little keeper loop so right at 6 inches

here just you can use ribbon or you can knit up another little bit and garter

stitch here I knit four rows and garter stitch and then just go ahead and pack

it to your tie and there you have it on the back of your work and then you just

are able to put that thinner piece to the back of your tie to hold it in place

TRX vs Gymnastic Rings - Which is Better? - Duration: 7:45.

Gymnastic rings and TRX Suspension Trainer are both great pieces of equipment that let you train your whole body.

Both are compact and lightweight, so having either one of them in your backpack

is like having the whole gym with you everywhere you go.

However, in spite of being very similar, they also have a lot of crucial differences.

In this video I will tell you about pros and cons of each apparatus

and also share my opinion to help you determine which one is a better choice for you.

Gymnastic rings are as simple as it gets when it comes to its construction.

Two straps with a buckle and two wooden rings.

Due to their simplicity, they're practically indestructible

and can be considered a lifelong investment.

TRX has a little more complicated build, although still pretty straightforward.

The two rotatable handles are connected with a strap.

Another strap is used to attach it to a bar with a clip hook at the end of it.

There are also two buckles that control the length of the connecting strap.

The materials used are high quality and it certainly can be used for years without any damage.

However, because the handles are moveable there is a lot of friction generated in this joint.

In my old gym I've seen those straps almost cut through, but that's an effect of everyday,

all day use for months or years probably,

so as an individual user, there's nothing to worry about.

To conclude, both TRX and rings are practically a lifetime investment.

Both aparatuses are very small and compact, so they're perfect to travel with.

Their weight is similar as well, TRX weighing 850g (1.9 lbs)

and rings about 950g (2.1l bs).

I'm not reviewing any particular brand of rings,

but most of them cost between 30-50 US dollars.

TRX Suspension Trainer retails for 100 to 250 US

dollars depending on the type of the kit you choose.

There is a lot of cheaper knockoffs however,

with the prices ranging from 30 to 50 US dollars,

although I can't say anything about the quality as I've never used one.

Both TRX and rings are very quick and straightforward to set up.

It's also not very difficult to find proper hanging place for them,

as it doesn't even have to be perfectly horizontal.

Whether you're in the city or in the nature,

you should be ready to train after a few minutes of searching.

This is assuming that you use rings just as the TRX.

If you want to be able to hang from them, then it gets a little more difficult.

You're gonna need roughly horizontal element on a proper height.

Such place is harder find, but I never had any issue with it.

Unless you live in the middle of the desert you should be fine.

Let's now get to the most important aspect of this review – functionality.

TRX system is intended for training using only a part of your bodyweight.

It means that some part of your body is always sitting on the ground,

be it your feet or hands.

This is where TRX shines and outclasses the rings.

The rotatable handles work great in exercises like bicep curls,

tricep extensions or rollouts.

They are much more comfortable than rings,

where you either have to hold a false grip all the time or limit the range of motion.

Another great feature of the TRX are feet straps.

They allow you to put feet inside them and are much more comfortable and stable then rings.

Although there isn't a huge amount of exercises that requires your feet to be just above the ground,

the ones which do are much more convenient performed on the TRX.

The last aspect differentiating both apparatuses is the fact,

that TRX has connected grips.

This implicates a few things.

First, you don't have to adjust the length of the TRX precisely,

because after you put weight on it, the grips will level themselves.

Rings require a little more fiddling to get them to be equally long.

However this also implicates, that you are responsible for keeping the handles evenly throught the movement,

that can make exercises a little harder,

especially the ones that load the handles unequally.

Gymnastic rings let you do most of the same exercises that can be performed on the TRX,

they're just a little less convenient to do.

Up until now, the rings seem to get a slight beating from the TRX Suspension Trainer.

But that's about to change as it's time to talk about indermediate and advanced exercises.

TRX's functionality is basically limited to basic, functional exercises where,

as I mentioned earlier, you use only a certain portion of your bodyweight.

Gymnastic rings, on the other hand,

allow you to train with all your bodyweight supported on them as well.

They practically give you the functionality of a bar,

allowing you to do hanging exercises like muscle ups,

chin ups, levers, ab exercises and more.

On top of that, you can get your body above the rings and do all sorts of exercises

like dips, L-sits or handstands.

These exercises are great for developing strength

and learning how to control and stabilize your body.

Which is better then? Gymnastic rings or TRX?

You cannot really decide without determining who is going to be using it.

If you're a beginner, and your goals are just to get in shape,

develop some strength and build some muscles,

but you're not aspiring to become an intermediate or advanced athlete,

then TRX is a better choice.

It's easier to set up and more convenient to use for all the basic exercises,

but still allowing to get in a great shape.

On the other hand, if you are more serious about bodyweight training

and you want to take building your strength and skills to the next level,

then definitely go for the rings.

They allow you to train as a complete beginner, almost as well as TRX does,

but don't limit your ambitions when you get seriously hooked on bodyweight training.

and most people use scotch tape but all I had was this tape so we're just going

to have to roll with it. So since you are the youngest I'm going to give you

the honors of being able to say the first word so you're going to kick off

this round. Kite, buy, cat, sad, dog, happy, animal, pen, chicken, emoji, emoji heart. Umm

I already said emoji so you can't say emoji heart that still has the word emoji in

it so Wow can't even rip tape. Ok, let's see here I'll start us off this round so

yeah I get the big one and you get the little, small one. This is still a pretty

no *weird noises* okay Angie it's your turn to start us off again so go cat, bag, dog,

Weekly Thoughts: 1984 and Reality - Duration: 6:37.

Hey ya'll so today I wanted to talk about the book 1984 by George Orwell because I

recently finished reading it and it is-I really enjoyed it first of all and it

has a lot of really interesting topics that it brings up throughout the book

and the main one that really has stuck with me and I've been thinking about is

whether there is such a thing as objective reality or truth and if you

haven't read the book basically it's in 1984 and it's following like this one

guy he's a regular citizen it's in a dystopian world and there's the party

which rules over all of the citizens and kind of controls their reality and

there's a couple of ways that they sort of do that it shows itself how reality

can be altered through the way that people accept the lies that the party

presents us truth and this quote is talking about that so I'm going to read

that real quick "And if all others accepted the lie which the party imposed

if all records told the same tale then the lie passed into history and became

truth 'who controls the past,' ran the party slogan 'controls the future who

controls the present controls the past.'" so one of the ways that they're sort of

creating this new reality is by controlling all of the information and

all of the things that these people have access to. One of the other ways that the party

sort of controls you know their people and creates this sort of new reality is

through their language that they're creating called Newspeak and it hasn't

been established completely but it's slowly taking over and newspeak is

becoming the official language basically newspeak is the English language

simplified they're taking out a ton of words from the English language and just

reducing it so that each word only has a very specific and well-defined meaning

with no room for interpretation as I was reading you know

the book and stuff and reading about Newspeak it really struck me I mean this

may seem kind of obvious but it really struck me that the bigger vocabulary you

have the easier it is to express yourself and to describe things and if

you're better able to express yourself to other people you're going to have

better relationships because of communication and this really shows itself

in like younger kids because as I've been working this past week with the

kids one of the teachers told me sometimes kids that are acting out one

of the reasons could be because they don't know how to express themselves

they don't have the right words to explain what they're feeling inside like

they may be angry but they don't know that that feeling is called anger so

they will act out throw things whatever because they don't know how to say

what's going on inside and there's a section in the book that sort of touches

on that topic so I just want to read that really quick the person that the

main character is talking about is this girl that he's involved with. "Talking to

her he realized how easy it was to present an appearance of Orthodoxy while

having no grasp whatever of what Orthodoxy meant. In a way the worldview

of the party imposed itself most successfully on people incapable of

understanding it. They could be made to accept the most flagrant violations of

reality because they never fully grasped the enormity of what was demanded of

them and were not sufficiently interested in public events to notice

what was happening. By lack of understanding they remain sane they

simply swallowed everything and what they swallowed did them no harm because

it left no residue behind just as a grain of corn will pass

undigested through the body of a bird." By continuing to reduce the information and

understanding of the general public in the book they sort of kind of

eliminate even the possibility of revolt there's a section in the book that talks

about that it says, "The masses never revolt of their own

accord and they never revolt merely because they are oppressed

indeed so long as they are not permitted to have standards of comparison they

never even become aware that they are oppressed." And that sort of reminds me of

you know when I talked about in the weekly thoughts video about a

"comfortable prison cell" you know if all you've known is this terrible reality

and you have nothing to compare it to then I mean it won't seem so terrible or

what whatever because you don't know that it could be better it's like when

you're in that dark cave and it-all you've ever known is the darkness and

it's going to be so much better to be out in the light but you've never been

out there so you have nothing to compare the darkness to you don't think it's

dark in there because you've never been in the light. You may be quote unquote

"happier" in the dark you know not knowing that you are imprisoned but personally I

would much rather be in the light being able to see my chains you know it's so I

mean I guess everyone's their own person and stuff like that but it's-it's

something interesting to think about that your reality is shaped so much by

your surroundings and the things that other people say all the messages that

you're getting all of these things like all of these topics in this book can

relate to certain aspects of your life or wherever you are in the world and

things like that. I want to end on a couple of things first I want to read a

little paragraph that one of the characters is telling the main character

talking about the party and you know reality and things like that it just

really gets you to think so I'm going to read that real quick. "You believe that

reality is something objective external existing in its own right you also

believe that the nature of reality is self-evident. When you delude yourself

into thinking that you see something you assume that everyone else sees the same

thing as you but I tell you Winston that reality is not external reality exists

in the mind and nowhere else not in the

individual mind which can make mistakes and in any case soon perishes only in

the mind of the party which is collective and immortal whatever the

party holds to be true is truth it is impossible to see reality except

by looking through the eyes of the party that is the fact that you have got to

relearn Winston it needs an act of self-destruction an effort of the will

you must humble yourself before you can become sane."

3 Mind-Blowing Recent Dinosaur Discoveries - Duration: 5:10.

Paleontology may be the study of long-dead creatures, but as a field of science it's

very much alive.

Take dinosaurs, whose remains are a scientific treasure trove.

Even in the past year, some key studies have taught us huge things about what they are,

what they looked like, and how they lived and died.

And there's still lots to discover!

There's a new dinosaur species described around one every two weeks – we haven't

come close to "catching 'em all" yet.

But as new species are being added to the branches of the dinosaur tree of life, there's

rumblings of a big shake-up at its base.

A paper from March this year defies a 130-year-old widely-used classification system that divides

up dinosaurs into two groups, based on the orientation of a bone in the hip called the pubis.

If the pubis points tailwards, like in triceratops and stegosaurus, it's an Ornithischian.

But if the pubis faces the front, it's a Saurischian.

This group includes sauropods like Diplodocus, and theropods like T. rex and Velociraptor.

To put this simple classification system to the test, the researchers scrutinized fossils

of 74 early dinosaurs and their relatives, measuring 457 characteristics as objectively

as possible.

Using some heavyweight computing power, they suggest that theropods like the T. rex fit

better with the Ornithischians than their traditionally-assigned group!

This new group, which they called Ornithoscelidans, shares 21 criteria, like the shape of the

thigh bone, ridges on the upper jaw, and fusion of certain ankle bones.

So maybe the hip-based system division is deceptively simple, after all.

It might be tricked by convergent evolution.

Basically, if a front-facing pubis evolved more than once in different species, even

though their hips looked the same, they might not be as closely-related as we thought.

After such a strong proposal, there's probably gonna be a lot of discussion and disagreement

about how we look at dinosaurs.

Whether textbooks get rewritten, or a flaw in the new research means we stick with the

status quo, it's still good for old ideas to be put to the test!

This next study goes beyond bones, and tells us more about dinosaur outsides.

It's well-established that many dinosaurs had feathers, from a bunch of fossilised impressions.

And a 2016 paper literally added a whole new dimension to the study of these feathers!

It described – for the first time ever – a 99 million-year-old feathered dinosaur tail,

trapped in amber and stunningly preserved in 3D.

The unfused bones in the tail, called vertebrae, give it away as a non-avian dinosaur rather

than a bird.

And these feathers had some never-before-seen details – stuff that's hard to spot in

flat impressions.

The feathers have alternating branches, known as barbs, poking out from a central stem – which

is different than the paired barbs on bird feathers we see nowadays.

Also unexpected, the barbs are complete with many tiny barbules, a feature that gives feathers

some more structure and wasn't thought to have evolved until later.

From the size, it's thought to be from a juvenile dino, so we don't even know if

this is adult plumage or if it goes through a big molt as it grew up.

But even if there's a lot we don't know, this one discovery shows that there were probably

a lot of different dinosaur feather types that died out with their owners.

And, finally, besides how they looked, paleontologists also want to know how dinosaurs lived and died.

This includes the mass extinction 65 million years ago, which wiped out all dinosaurs except

a few – the avian theropods – that live among us today as birds.

Turns out, something about the very start of dinosaur lives might have been partly responsible

for the end: they took too long to hatch.

Compared to reptiles, bird eggs are speedy hatchers, taking somewhere between 11 and

85 days on average.

Getting up-and-running quickly has its advantages.

As a hatchling, you can move around to escape from predators, or find a better habitat if

your old one gets too cold or floods.

But stuck inside an egg, you're at the mercy of the outside world.

As the closest relatives of extinct dinosaurs, it was assumed that dinosaurs would be speedy

hatchers too, but we don't know that much about their development.

A 2016 study took another look at some rare embryonic Ornithischian dinosaur fossils.

By examining daily growth-lines in their teeth, researchers could estimate how old they were.

Turns out, they think the dinos took around 3 to 6 months to hatch – much longer than expected.

This slow development presumably worked fine during the Cretaceous, but not when a whopping

asteroid and intense climate change hit!

Being stuck inside the egg for so long might have made late-blooming dinosaurs less adaptable

to this harsh and changing world.

The avian theropods had probably already evolved this quick-hatch lifestyle before the asteroid

hit, and that happened to save their lives.

Evolution is just a series of lucky breaks and adaptations, after all!

incredible choreographed fights, stunt doubles make most of the silver screen's biggest blockbusters

possible.

Here's a peek at what they really look like, and more about their amazing stunt resumes.

Tanoai Reed is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

The Rock's cousin Tanoai Reed has worked as his stunt double in nearly 20 different roles.

From 2002's The Scorpion King to 2017's Baywatch, Reed has been performing stunts for his world

famous cuz.

In addition to being practically as close as brothers, Reed and Johnson frequently collaborate

behind-the-scenes on aspects of their combined performance.

Reed has won two Taurus World Stunt awards over the years for his work, as well as working

as an actor and motion-capture performer for the 2011 video game Thor: God of Thunder.

Paul Darnell is Robert Pattinson

For the last ten years, Paul Darnell has been working as a stuntman — when he's not busy

competing in parkour and freerunning competitions around the world.

Darnell was inspired to start freerunning and doing stunt work after watching a 2003

episode of Ripley's Believe it or Not! which featured parkour.

Not only is a talented stuntman, but Darnell has also been a two-time finalist on the popular

television series American Ninja Warrior.

A former gymnastics champion at Virginia Tech, Darnell has built up an impressive stunt reel

over the years for himself, including his work as a double for Henry Cavill in Man of

Steel, Adam Sandler in You Don't Mess with the Zohan, Paul Walker in Fast Five, and Robert

Pattinson in Water for Elephants, Remember Me, and the Twilight saga — a gig that Pattinson

thanked Darnell for when the film won "Best Fight" at the MTV Movie Awards.

Since the early 1990s, Canadian stuntwoman Marny Eng has racked up more than 100 roles

working as a stunt double and stunt coordinator, and has been twice nominated for a Taurus

World Stunt Award, among many others.

She's doubled for dozens of women and men over the years, but the actress she's performed

stunts for most frequently has been Reese Witherspoon.

Eng has been her double in at least three different roles, including 2015's Hot Pursuit.

Eng is also no stranger to acting, and you can spot her as Tabitha — a spoof of the

character Samara from The Ring — in the 2003 horror comedy Scary Movie 3.

Jack Gill is Will Ferrell

There's no question that the hilarious NASCAR comedy Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky

Bobby required a lot of fancy stunt driving, and Jack Gill is the man behind that action.

Since the 1970s, Gill has worked as a stunt performer and stunt driver on over 170 films

and television shows, including as the primary stunt driver on both The Dukes of Hazzard

and Knight Rider.

"We had a good time on the show and it was one of those types of shows that was like

a family.

A really tight-knit group."

Over the years, Gill has branched out into stunt coordination and second unit directing,

including on several of the Fast and Furious films.

With a metal plate in his neck, 23 broken bones, and eight concussions over the course

of his four-decade career, there's unquestionably nobody more qualified than Gill to testify

about the difficulties of the job.

Gill has also been instrumental in the push among the stunt community for an Oscar or

two recognizing the achievements of the stunt men and women that make so many of today's

movies possible.

Luci Romberg is Melissa McCarthy

For the last decade, Luci Romberg has been at the top of her game as a stuntwoman.

The Hollywood native is a former champion gymnast and also competes as one of the few

females in high-level freerunning competitions around the world.

"Fell in love with it and haven't gone back."

Over the course of her career, Romberg has doubled for Melissa McCarthy several times,

including in Identity Thief, Spy, The Boss, and Ghostbusters.

Greg Fitzpatrick is Ben Stiller

In the world of stunt performers, getting a job as the preferred stuntman or woman for

one of Hollywood's top stars is the ultimate gig.

For Greg Fitzpatrick, that opportunity came relatively early in his career, when he was

picked as the stunt double for Ben Stiller in the 2003 film Duplex.

Since then, Greg has become the preferred double for Stiller, and has since appeared

in more than a dozen films as Stiller's stuntman.

In addition to his resemblance to Ben Stiller, Fitzpatrick is also a talented stunt performer

and coordinator — he's won two Taurus World Stunt Awards and doubled for Robert Downey

Jr. in both Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

"I'm so happy to be working — to be allowed to work in a business that I love.

And I just want to continue to do it."

Vic Armstrong is Harrison Ford

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Vic Armstrong reigns as the most prolific

stuntman in the world.

Additionally, Armstrong is one of the few stunt performers to ever break the Academy

Award barrier, winning a Technical Achievement Academy Award in 2001.

With well over 100 stunt credits in a career that spans five decades, it probably would

not surprise you to learn that Armstrong doubled for some of Hollywood's biggest roles, including

as James Bond, Superman, and Indiana Jones.

"I'm not into drugs or anything, but when people talk about a high, you do stunts you

get a natural high that I guarantee you nobody in the world can match."

Reportedly, crew members frequently confused Armstrong with Harrison Ford on the set of

the Indiana Jones films, which resulted in Ford sending Armstrong a photo of the two

of them with the humorous inscription, "If you learn to talk, I'm in deep trouble!"

Billy Lucas is Arnold Schwarzenegger

Since 1990's Total Recall, stuntman Billy Lucas has had the sweet gig of working as

Arnold Schwarzenegger's stunt double on the set of most of his films.

From Kindergarten Cop to the Terminator series, if you saw Arnold do some crazy action scenes,

it was most likely Lucas' work that you were watching, not Arnold's:

In addition to his roles as Schwarzenegger's stunt double, Lucas has worked on over 100

different movies and TV shows as a stunt performer and coordinator.

Despite his undoubtedly busy schedule, it seems that Schwarzenegger and Lucas have become

close over the years — the former California Governor even shared a story of how Lucas

saved his life during a risky scuba-diving shot on the set of The 6th Day, saying "I

was trapped.

Then a hand grabbed me and pulled me out.

It was my stunt double, Billy Lucas.

He'd been watching from below with a tank and goggles and realised I was in big, big

trouble."

Randolph LeRoi is Will Smith

A Haitian native who immigrated to Brooklyn as a child, Randolph LeRoi grew up playing

sports and training in taekwondo.

As an adult, LeRoi got involved in modeling and also became a firefighter in Miami.

A spot as "Mr. May" on the fire department's promotional calendar began to land him roles

in commercials and TV spots in Florida, which prompted LeRoi to move to California to try

his hand at acting and stunt performing.

After being picked as the stunt double for Will Smith on 1995's Bad Boys, LeRoi and Smith

have become close friends.

Since then, LeRoi has doubled for Smith on nearly a dozen films, like in 2007's I am

Legend.

Eddie Yansick is Nicolas Cage

Only a few short years after his stuntman debut in 1993, Eddie Yansick got picked to

be Nicolas Cage's stunt double in the 1997 action film Con Air.

Since then, Yansick has doubled for Cage in more than a dozen roles, including Lord of

War, Matchstick Men, and Ghost Rider.

In addition to his over 70 stunt credits over the last three decades, Yansick also works

as a stunt coordinator, actor, and a second unit director.

In 2001, Yansick distinguished himself with his stunt work when he won a Taurus award

for best driving for his performance in a Gone in Sixty Seconds chase scene between

a Mustang and a police car.

Tony Angelotti is Johnny Depp

Tony Angelotti is primarily known for his work as Johnny Depp's stunt double in the

Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise, a job he's held at significant personal cost.

An accident on the set of Dead Man's Chest in 2005 nearly ended his career — and his

life.

While rehearsing a "human yo-yo" stunt, everything went drastically wrong …

"Whoa!

Oh s--- ! Oh!

Oh my God!

Ow!

Oh!

Oh!

Get me down!"]

… the tension on the line was incorrect, and the centrifugal force whipped him around

so hard that when Angelotti hit the end of the line, his pelvis was split apart like

a wishbone on a turkey.

It may not look that bad, but while prepping this sequence, Angelotti broke his pelvis,

suffered injuries to his knees, legs, and bladder, and lost a massive six units of blood

from internal bleeding.

But he hasn't let his injuries keep him down.

He doubled again for Depp in 2007's At World's End, and continues to work in the stunt field

today.

But not every stunt performer can walk away from injuries and return to the job.

Olivia Jackson is Milla Jovovich

Olivia Jackson's promising stunt career was cut short in 2016 when she suffered a near-fatal

accident on the set of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, where she was working as Milla

Jovovich's stunt double.

Prior to her role in that film, Jackson had worked as the stunt double for Charlize Theron

in Mad Max: Fury Road and for Elizabeth Olsen in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

In the horrific incident, the motorcycle that Jackson was riding in a scene crashed into

a camera crane arm when it malfunctioned and didn't move out of the way fast enough.

Jackson was in a medically-induced coma for 17 days because of her injuries, which included

serious facial trauma, a punctured lung, a crushed arm which had to be amputated, and

debilitating damage to her spine and neck.

The accident wouldn't be the only incident to plague the set of Resident Evil — not

long after Jackson's crash, a crew member on the set died when a Humvee slipped from

a sling and crushed him beneath.

For her part, Jackson is fighting bravely to move on with her life, and recently shared

some photos of herself on the road to recovery.

Praise the Lord.

It is a joy to once again meet you all through this episode.

In the last episode we saw about the quality of the Lord Jesus Christ.

I felt like speaking about each one of His quality in each episode.

That day we saw how the Lord humbled Himself ñ

A God who totally humbled Himself in such a way that He stooped to wash menís feet.

We cannot merely talk about His humility in words.

I donít know how it would have been.

I donít know how Peter and others took it when He ñ the God and the Messiah - began to wash the Apostlesí feet.

It might have been a ësuper subjectí. Thus we saw about that quality.

Today we are going to see how a soul ñ it is nothing but man ñ can get rest?

Why does he need it? Who would give it? Why and how?

We are going to see about ëRest to Soulí.

Who will give rest to soul and why it is important for a soul to get rested?

We are going to see about this in the Bible.

The term soul is referred to as ëNefeshí in Hebrews.

Nefesh denotes a man.

It is said that in the time of Noah, 8 souls got into the ark.

It means 8 people got into it.

Similarly if I say that there are nearly 7,500 crores of people,

it means that there are nearly 7,500 souls on this earth.

I am telling this as an example.

So, the word Nefesh originates from the Hebrew language.

This term soul is referred to as Psyche in Greek which again denotes a man.

I hope you are clear about this.

When we see the Bible, we are going to see a small angle of the soul.

A soul has no rest.

Today we are like that ñ there is no peace,.

I am not going to teach you that Jesus could give you peace.

Rather I am going to talk on why this does not happen systemically and why we suffer.

Christians too suffer.

Of course we believe that Jesus alone could give us peace.

But, how many Christians do have this peace?

To a person who does not know God, I may say,

Jesus is the Prince of peace. If you are saved, you will get this peace.

But what about the saved people who are in Jesus? What is their problem?

Why donít they have peace?

Today we are going to see about this.

This is for those who know Christ but still do not have rest in their lives.

It is said in the Bible, He has moved my soul far from peace.

I have forgotten prosperityÖ (Lamentations 3:17).

This is said by a man, to God ñ God has moved my soul far from peace.

Hence there is no prosperity for me.

You should understand this clearly- If there is no peace for a soul, it has no rest.

I may do ministry well; I can get on the stage and talk well in the mike;

I can show good growth in my business; my family is happy. Good.

But still my soul would wonder, Whatís this?

I donít know what to doÖhow to live anymore? What should I do? ñ

Often we think like this. The reason for this is that there is no rest for that soul.

Nothing else. I guess you have got my point.

I have a problem; I am not peaceful; there is no help for me;

I am depressed; I have everything but still something is missing ñ

if you feel like this, the reason is that you are missing the peace.

Why so? It is God who has kept it far from us. Do you know why?

I wouldnít say that it is God who has kept it far. It was the scenario in Lamentations.

It might have happened because of their wrongs.

It was a different matter and I am not going to talk about that.

Today, let me give an answer by reading Psalm 62:5: My soul waits silently for God alone,

for my expectation is from Him.

It says only when I wait for Him, I would get everything ñ peace, joy and rest ñ that I need from Him.

Let me show you yet another verse in Exodus 33:14,

My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.

In the first verse we saw, that when our soul looks only up to God, there is no problem for us.

The next thing is when God goes before me and leads my life, I would be at rest.

Today, these two alone make us lose peace.

One, I am not waiting on the Lord and the second thing is

that the Lord does not occupy the first place in my life.

The problem with me today is that I donít focus my life towards the Lord.

I do everything but my conscience shows me that I donít have peace.

What does this mean?

It means that I am not focused towards the presence of God

and secondly God does not go ahead of me and lead my life.

In that case, it is the devil who goes before me and leads me

since I have given room for him in my life. This is the truth.

What is spirituality?

A man, hating his physical life and trying to develop his spirit and soul,

being concerned about it, is spirituality.

If any religion or organization says that we should shoot with a gun

or beat others with a stick or torture others, our soul would be raging.

This kind of religion is not a religion at all.

It is not an organization at all.

Rather these are all the plans of the devil and nothing else.

For every man ñ whether he is a beggar or a rich man or middle class

or a daily wager, or wealthy ñ his soul would cry out.

If the soul is surrendered to the presence of the Lord and to Him it would live peacefully.

I remember a short story:

A deer was about to give birth to its baby and went deep into the woods.

Suddenly there was lightning and storm which set on a forest fire.

So the deer decided to turn back and go to the plains.

But it was shocked to see a hunter standing near with an arrow aiming at it.

The deer was scared and turned to the other side where stood a hungry lion

waiting to devour both the mother and the baby to be born.

Thus the deer was surrounded by troubles on three sides.

So the deer turned to yet another direction towards the river and headed there.

However, because of heavy rains, there was flash flood in the river.

Now the deer had troubles on all four sides. There was no way of escape.

The deer went to the Lord and said, Lord, I commit my soul ñ myself ñ to You.

I give my babies in to Your hands. You will protect us

Do you know what happened when the deer said this with faith?

Even as the deer was talking to God, a small ant bit the hunterís leg

and the arrow darted out and struck the lion which died on the spot.

When the hunter again aimed his arrows, he was struck down by a lightning and fell dead.

Since there was a heavy rain the fast spreading forest fire was put off.

The flood was stopped. Now the deer had a big escape.

I am telling this as a parable to you.

Today we may have troubles on four sides of our life.

Wherever we turn, we face problems ñ if we step out of our house,

there is a problem outside, problem in the family, ministry, in the job,

in the society and spiritual battles in the spiritual world ñ

spirits of lust, lies, jealousy, poverty and so on.

All these trouble us on one side.

If you are in any kind of problem, the only solution is just telling the Lord,

Lord, there are so many problems in my life. I surrender my soul to Your presence.

The moment you take this decision, you would get rest from then on.

If you sit in the Lord ñ do you know how you would live?

Isaiah 57:2 says, He shall enter into peace; they shall rest in their beds,

Each one walking in his uprightnessÖ

Today, if you go to the Lord and tell Him, Lord, give me rest.

Remove my problem O Lord. You alone can do thisÖ

When you go and stand before the Lord you would get peace.

This peace would be with you permanently until you walk in to rest in your beds.

Today go and tell God, Lord, I have come with troubles.

I have been facing problems from yesterday.

Today I have committed my soul to You. I have committed myself to You.

From now on I am going to obey You. So protect me Lord.

How to confirm this? Today I am with the Lord; my soul is with Him.

As said in Isaiah 57 :2 you would walk in righteousness.

As you keep walking in righteousness you would enter into peace and lead a restful life.

Today it is not important what kind of ministry we do or what job we do.

Wherever you are, if you are able to give rest to your soul

there is no cleverer person than you. What we need today is peace.

Every man, every nation, every kind of profession, and every kind of politics need peace.

There should be a peace treaty.

Today, everybody is raging because there is no rest in any one.

When a soul does not rest it goes here and there and

there would not be any stability or consistent growth.

Again I say that soul refers to you.

Today if you do not live a life that gives rest to your soul,

your life on this world thus far is a waste.

Today we have many questions ñ Why am I not growing in my spiritual life?

Why donít I have anointing? Why donít I understand many things?

We may wonder that our life is slothful and lukewarm and blasÈ.

It means that first of all you have not surrendered your soul to God.

No soul can live without rest or peace from God.

Only when you are restful in God you would keep growing in the spirit.

If not you can never grow in the spirit.

You have to understand this. Today why do we lack rest in our lives?

It is very important that you grow in your spiritual life.

More than that, your rest is important.

Most of us have a wrong notion that there would be no rest and joy in the path of ministry.

Problems would be there. But there would not be lack of rest and joy.

Understand this well.

It is clearly said in the Bible that when you stand for God,

you would face problems from all sides and you would be constrained.

But you would not lose your peace.

God says, I am the living water. He, who drinks Me would never lose his peace and assurance.

Today we do ministry but we lose rest.

In that case what kind of life do we lead? We should think about this.

It is nothing but a self examination ñ I am doing ministry; I am Mohamed Ajhas.

I am a soul. I work, do ministry, and everything.

Yet, why do I lack peace in my life? why do I lack rest?

ñ If I think in this vein, it means that I am absolutely not right with God.

Period! I learn a lot; it is good.

I study the Bible; I am called for meetings and so on.

But this is not life.

What ministry can I do, having lost peace in my personal life?

I can talk on pages after pages of the Bible and say,

God, who gives peace, is coming; Come running to HimÖ

Yet in actuality I would not have any fruit.

Why? I am telling a lie. I should live a fruit bearing life.

The Bible says that I can live a fruit yielding life only when I am in God and in King Jesus.

Fruit yielding life refers to peace, long suffering, love, and so on.

However you see, all the verses take us towards the experience of fruit yielding ñ the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

It is nothing but being aligned with the Holy Spirit.

A life in God is the actual experience of fruit yielding.

Today you have to live as people who enjoy peace in your life,

ministry and job and not as people who spoil peace.

Why does God want to make you live with rest?

Only when you are restful you would grow in your spirit, peacefully.

You would keep growing to build good characteristics and build the Kingdom of God.

On one side your soul will be resting in God and

on the other side as your spirit rests, it would keep growing.

Today I tell you unless your soul rests, your spirit will never grow.

The Lord is not a strict military officer.

He would never say, Ok, Youíve grown half way in your spiritual life;

I would achieve things through you.

Never should you think, OK I havenít grown and done what God wants me to do.

Itís alright. Time is flying and so God will take me with HimÖ

Rather God is waiting patiently for your soul to rest.

It means God is telling you, Have you come to My presence?

Are you sitting in My presence looking up to Me? I will lead your lifeÖ.

Thus the Lord looks at you and waits.

If my life is not so, I would suffer all the more. Thatís all.

Ministry is necessary; job is necessary; life is necessary;

sermon is necessary; Bible reading is necessary; prayer is necessary.

However do you know what is the checklist that is far more important than these

Is my soul today at rest with God?

That is, Am I living in God, having reconciled with Him totally?

About Enoch it is said that Enoch lived for 300 hundred years and suddenly could not be found.

He was taken by God.

Enoch had such a great pleasure on the Lord that He walked with Him.

In the Bible it is said God calls Noah, Noah, who does righteousness!

Righteous Noah! How was Noahís time?

Today our world is an open one where there is Tasmac, adultery, and fornication in mobile

and we can talk to even ten harlots and develop wrong relationships.

The Bible says that this is how Noahís time was.

May be they did not have cell phones but sin was abounding.

May be 50 crores of people lived in his time.

I am not sure. But how many people would have lived in those 2000 years!

Those days everybody lived for 900 years.

So they might have been advanced in age.

When those great many people did wrongs, Noah and his family of 8 members did not do any wrong.

In that case how much they would have committed their souls to God!

God Himself calls Noah, Doer of righteousness.

In that case how strongly would have Noah presented His soul

before the presence of God and lived righteously.

Such people would live an established life in God and His Kingdom.

I always say, My first need is that I should be saved; my family should be saved;

my soul should be in the presence of God.

If I do not minister to myself or to my family but minister only to the public,

I am not a Christian of Godís expectation.

Today, your family may not be saved; your husband may not be correct;

your wife may have gone backsliding; your children may not be proper.

You need to understand this clearly: Set right everything and then come to do ministry.

When you do ministry when your family is not right,

you can certainly never live as a person whom God wants you to be and

you would always have no joy or peace or rest in your life.

Today, when I rest in the Lord, there would not be any problem in my life.

I can live well in God.

But if I donít rest in the Lord, all problems would assail me and

I wouldnít be able to face them and eventually would backslide and

land into an experience of not being saved.

The verse that I prefer among the verses I have read today is

Psalm 62:5. My soul waits silently for God alone for my expectation is from Him.

The simple thing is, you should see whether your soul is at rest in your life.

Or if you say, No I struggle; I donít get any answer; there is no rest for me; I am always troubled.

No problem, just wait on the Lord; commit yourself to the Lord for Him to lead your life.

When you thus live, you can live with rest for your soul, which God expects from you.

Shall we pray? Thank You loving Lord. Loving heavenly Father, thank You for this time, O Father.

Whether in this world or ministry or job we failed to live a good life

and have lived in many difficulties, reproaches, problems, struggles,

accusing our soul and not taking care of it.

But O Father today, give rest to our soul O King.

Lord, give peace to our soul!

We know that King Jesus is the God who gives peace.

You are the one, who created our soul. You are the one who created us. Give us peace O Lord.

We humble and commit ourselves to You so that we would not lose our peace

but grow more and more in Godís Kingdom.

Change every cry in the lives of those who attend this meeting and hear this message,

O King, just as how the deer in that story placed its complete faith on You

that You would protect it at that critical situation,

I know that in my life too the Lord God would protect me and whatever problems may come in my life,

there is no worry for me and You would help us, O King.

Today we commit our souls in Your presence. We commit our spirits in Your presence.

We commit our bodies in Your presence. Let Your will prevail.

Give me rest O King. Only when I am with You I can get this experience.

Bless all the people who hear this prayer.

Father, fulfil their needs. I commit them to You to lead a good and disciplined life in You, Lord.

All glory and honour O Father, be to You.

I pray this in the name of the living Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,

who has redeemed and saved us.

Amen.

When I was at Chico about 40 years ago

there weren't that many options when you got a business degree.

There of course were the powerhouses of accounting and Finance.

And everybody wanted to get into accounting and finance.

And then management and marketing. And then,

The Rodney Dangerfield of options

called, back then, personnel and industrial relations.

Now known as Human Resources.

I think part of the reason that it was the Rodney Dangerfield,

and got no respect,

was because it was wasn't appreciated or valued the way it could have been.

When I think back in my beginning of my career

it was kind of like where you sent people that weren't working elsewhere.

But let me put out some challenges some questions to you about business.

How do innovations and ideas get turned into products?

How do products get to market?

How do strategic plans get executed?

I'm going to give you one word

that says how that's done.

That one word is people

and there's really the opportunity for human resources.

Now when I first started back in 1978 in my career

there was the basic blocking and tackling of what human resources did.

Your job was to attract retain and motivate employees.

Year, after year, after year,

we kept asking for a seat at the table.

At the corporate table. At the board table.

To add more value.

And they said... "ok you want to add more value to the business?"

"Start functioning like a business and start acting like a business person."

For example we want you to partner in executing to the bottom line.

We want you to partner in developing business strategy.

And we want you to partner in creating the business culture.

That's where you can really add value from a human resources perspective.

So we did.

I'm going to share three stories with you

which helps to illustrate what human resources can do in the organization.

And by the end of these three stories

I expect all of you to change your majors to human resources.

You know when you think about product pricing

depending upon which business you're in

your product price is anywhere from 20 to 90%,

personnel, people related cost,

labor, labor associated costs.

If you're in the services industry it's probably close to 90%.

When you were in the aerospace and defense industry like I was, manufacturing,

it's more like 20%.

In no other industry

do people not worry about an element of production cost

when they're delivering a product.

Except for when it comes to people.

So if you had a commodity that you needed

you wanted to get your suppliers to get the cost down to the bare minimum.

But for some reason people would come to me and say...

"our people aren't paid enough."

You're telling me you want to increase your price of your product

because your people aren't paid enough.

One of the jobs that I had in Lockheed Martin

was doing compensation

and part of my job was to go out in the marketplace

and measure the market.

To see what our people should be paid,

and then I would publish rate ranges.

The managers would come back to me and say

wait a second I can tell by all the information you give

me my people are underpaid 7%.

And I said...

"That may be the case but I've done one other thing with that data."

"I've taken a look at how our product market competitors grade their people,"

"if they have six grades as we do because we use the same survey"

"I find that our average technical employee is in grade 3.7."

"The survey is 3.3."

"Your people are over leveled,"

"You're comparing them to the wrong marketplace."

Ohhh pshaw pshaw.

So I put it on paper

and I gave them those very numbers right there.

Yeah your people are paid about 6% below market

but you're over leveled. You're comparing it to the wrong market.

And when I compute what it should cost

by saying ok if we paid at market and we look like our product market competitors

as far as a leveling that we had.

We would be 1% over market.

Ehhh 1%.

I said... "it's $63,000,000!"

That changed the song right there.

Developing a business strategy.

You know one things that HR people have to worry about

is do you have the right talent

to execute in your existing markets and in your future markets?

If there's a longest lead item of anything when it comes to producing products

it's people.

I used to say...

"That every engineer and scientist that we were going to hire,"

"has already been born."

And it's true.

The problem is.

When we worked in aerospace and defense people had to have clearances

we couldn't import talent from outside the United States they had to be US citizens

to be able to get a clearance.

And we knew what the population profile looked like in America.

It wasn't getting that big.

And frankly a lot of the students

weren't going into science technology engineering and math curriculums.

They weren't going to become engineers and scientists,

if they weren't doing well in math and science,

in elementary school,

in middle school,

and in high school.

We had to change that vector.

So we sent our engineers into the classroom

to generate excitement for careers in science technology engineering and math.

That my friend is strategic planning when you're planning twenty years out

for the person you want to hire that's just been born.

For those existing markets that already have people that we want to go hire you

you have to ask yourself.

Are we an employer of choice?

And if not why not?

What we found was we weren't always attracting the people we wanted to at the universities.

We had the best products to go work on.

I mean we just had the sexiest things.

If you wanted to work on a state-of-the-art aircraft

you came to Lockheed Martin.

But that wasn't what all the new graduates wanted to do

they wanted to evaluate the character of your company as well.

And what we found is it wasn't so much what we did

it's how we treated our employees.

And we talked to the students they were as concerned about sustainability and how we operated

as we were how we treated our employees.

All of our employees!

And one thing we heard loud and clear was

how you treat your LGBT community

is indicative of how you're going to treat all of your employees.

So back in the late 90s we put in domestic partner benefits.

Before I left the last thing I did was put in transgender surgery

as an option that we would pay for under our healthcare.

That kept us going at the Human Rights Campaign with a 100% rating

and allowed us to not just appeal to the LGBT community

but to everybody that had an affinity for that group as well.

One last story,

I'm going to put the human back in human resources.

They aren't just a resource for production,

they are people as well.

Culture.

Developing a culture.

How you treat your people is critical.

David Caldwell at Santa Clara University

talks about culture as being the invisible glue that holds your organization together.

How do we treat one another?

I'm going to give you a case study on second chances.

When I was hired back in 1978 there was an HR VP who was the HR God.

I found myself 25 years later after he had retired in his chair as the HR VP

and a decision before me.

His daughter who had been a long-term employee,

with a very spotty employment record performance record,

was found to have returned to work after lunch inebriated.

I asked for the records.

The recommendation was for termination.

I looked at the records and it said that she had a blood alcohol content of .08

Now I had discretion pretty much on our process and our policy up to .08

as to what I would do.

But we had never not terminated somebody after .08

So I terminated the HR God's daughter.

She called me next week she says... "that can't be."

"I only had two drinks!"

Now I've used that line before.

So I called the medical department,

I said... "I'll look into it."

I said... "Can you read me back the reports?"

She says yes we tested her twice.

1 was .04 1 was .041

I then realized that we had made a mistake,

although I had the discretion to fire her,

I didn't have to.

I called her back,

I said...

"You're a long service employee I'm going to give you a second chance,"

"under one condition."

"You get clean and sober."

She says... "I will."

So she went into a program.

She said... "I'll call you at the end of December when I'm done."

End of December came she didn't call.

End of January came she didn't call.

End of February she didn't call.

She called me early March

and she says...

"I'm ready to come back to work."

I said... "I expected you to call in January."

She says... "I wasn't ready,"

"I wanted to see whether I could stay clean and sober."

"And I have."

I said... "we have a job for you, come on back."

A model employee from that point forward.

Fast forward a number of years before he died.

The HR God called me and said...

"I want to thank you."

And I said... for what? firing your daughter when I shouldn't have?

I didn't say that.

He said... "You saved my daughter's life."

"Thank you."

It's then when I learned

that how you treat an employee in a moment of crisis

sets the culture for how you treat all of your employees.

HR (Human Resources) has a very powerful message and a very powerful opportunity.

II want to leave with you a saying from Steve Wynn from Wynn Las Vegas.

It says...

"Human Resources isn't a thing we do it's the thing that runs our business"
