Waching daily Jun 13 2017

Hi community of awesome, I'm Ava Jae, and this is bookishpixie.

So my first drafts actually tend to lack in description.

For me, description is something that I tend to focus on in revisions.

The reason being, for me I tend to be a lot more plot and dialogue-focused when I'm first

drafting, so I don't think as much as I should probably about what's going on around the

character, or what their environment is like.

But, you know, filling in those gaps is what revisions are for.

But how much description is too much?

The idea when writing description is to give enough information that the readers can picture

the characters' surroundings, but not so much information that you stop the action completely

to go on and on and on about the environment.

I like to blend description into the action, so a little bit upfront as the character enters

a new environment, and then they'll also notice things as the dialogue and action happens.

That way you never stop the action and kill the pacing with a giant mountain of description.

A really important thing to remember is your description should be filtered through your perspective character.

What one character notices about an environment, and what they think about it, is very different

from what another character might think.

The words you use to describe said environment should always reflect the perspective characters' language.

It should sound like them.

Because remember, you, the author, aren't the one describing—your point of view character is.

To give you an example, I'm going to read a quick sample from BEYOND THE RED, of Eros's

impressions of the palace complex in Elja for the first time.

I think it gets to the point that I'm describing that the description should sound like your

character because this very uniquely sounds like Eros and not Kora.

Okay, here we go.

"Everything here is white and red.

Endless red sands stretch far into the horizon.

Strong, smooth white walls reach to the stars.

Glistening white stone buildings shimmer different colors under the heat of the suns, all draped

in red flags and banners with the Eljan insignia.

Eljan citizens of all ages walk quickly down the streets, doing whatever they voiding do

in the city, every adult marked with varying degrees of black unreadable text on their bodies.

All the buildings have darkened windows and closed doors—the people here are just *so* friendly.

Reflective black spheres the size of my fist zip in and out of the crowd, ducking around

buildings and between heads.

Paved white pathways wind between the buildings, around the wall, and into the palace complex,

where I'm sure it's even more disgustingly elaborate, but we're not headed there."

So I mean, the obvious key points there being that Kora obviously would not think that her

palace complex is "disgustingly elaborate," and she wouldn't say "voiding" and she'd,

um, probably not pay as much attention to the tattoos that everyone has because everyone

has them and they're normal to her—things like that, they're things that Eros would

notice and the way he notices them, and the way he thinks about them are uniquely his.

So main takeaways, don't describe everything all at once because you will destroy your

pacing, and always make sure you describe through your perspective characters.

So that's what I've got for today!

How to Set Up a Charcoal Grill Like a Pro | Food Network - Duration: 3:27.

[music playing]

Great grilling starts with setting

up your equipment correctly and safely to get the perfect fire.

These tips will teach you about indirect and direct heat,

and will make you a grill master.

First, put the grill in a safe location.

Next, choose your charcoal.

You have two options-- charcoal briquettes, hardwood charcoal.

Charcoal briquettes have medium heat and last a long time.

Hardwood charcoal burns hot and fast and adds amazing flavor.

We like a combination of the two for a fire

that has the flavor of hardwood charcoal, but lasts longer.

The safest, most efficient way to light a charcoal grill

is to use a chimney.

Fill the top of the chimney with briquettes

and hardwood charcoal.

Place the chimney on your grill's lower grate.

Carefully light the newspaper under the chimney.

The flame will travel upwards to ignite the coals.

When the coals look like this with a live flame and just

starting to ash over, the chimney is ready.

For both indirect and direct heat,

bank the coals on one side of the grill.

This will be the hot side with direct heat.

Indirect and direct heat gives you

a hot zone for a quick sear, and then a cooler spot

to finish cooking.

Direct heat-- spread the coals in a flat layer

on the bottom of the grill.

The heat is hot and even this way.

Ring of fire-- looks like it sounds.

Place a small aluminum tray in the center of the lower grate.

Carefully pour the coals around the tray in a ring.

The food sits on the top grill grate in the center,

and the heat circulates around it much like an oven.

Put the cover on for best results.

Last steps before grilling-- put the upper grate in place

above the coals to preheat it.

A well-preheated grate keeps your food from sticking.

Make sure the vent on the bottom of the grill is slightly open.

Fire needs air to burn.

Now check for your hot spots.

Carefully move your hand over the grill six

inches above the grate.

Pause.

If you can only hold it for three or four seconds,

that's the hottest part of the grill.

If you can hold it for six seconds,

then that's a cooler spot.

Knowing where these spots are will help you take advantage

of the heat when you grill.

Next, clean your grill if you have to.

An inexpensive wire brush from the hardware store works well.

Oil the grill with tongs and an oiled paper towel.

When the oil is smoking, you're ready to go.

Now that your grill is set up correctly,

it's time to show off your grilling know-how.

What is she saying?(31) (Listening Practice) [ ForB English Lesson ] - Duration: 2:15.

Hi everyone and welcome back to another lesson here at ForB's English.

In today's lesson, you are guessing what I'm saying.

So, here we go.

Forget it.

Forget it.

Forget it.

Can you guess what I'm saying?

Let's try it one more time.

This time with a hint.

Forget it.

Forget it.

Forget it.

Could you catch it this time?

Let's try it a little bit slower.

Forget it.

Forget it.

Forget it.

The answer is, "Forget it."

And at natural speed in English, in American English, in particular.

The "t" sound is dropped on the word forget, so it becomes forget, forget it.

And also, in British English in natural native speed, the "t" sound will become softer as well.

Sometimes it sounds like American English too but we will always have it become a stronger "t" sound

so we might say, "Forget it.", "Forget it."

And we will practice it a little together now.

So please repeat after me.

Forget it.

One more time. Forget it.

Excellent.

Now let's try it a little bit faster. Native speed.

Forget it.

And three times. Native speed.

Please repeat after me.

Forget it.

Forget it.

Forget it.

Excellent.

Good job.

So you can use this phrase if you want to say to your friend or colleague,

let's forget that idea or I give up on something and just forget it and move on to the next point.

Hope you find it useful.

Thank you very much for watching this video.

NORMALITY - Duration: 11:56.

Hello,

How are you?

What do you have to say, Pawel?

Surely nothing...

(Band playing in the studio next to ours)

I will go to them and ask if we can play together, myself on drums!

Hello, 6,5 km

considering my aching tooth, it's not so bad.

The tooth really made my night a misery...

And as it is, typically,

today's morning I have very important meeting!

which I should attend rested

and with clear mind...

Instead, I haven't slept anything past night...

What can I do... I hope that morning jogging helped me out a bit.

I wish you a fantastic day!

Let's talk about "normality". I have a feeling that this feature is in demand,

being normal.

First of all, because being normal diffrentiates us from all these people who try to be

special.

Secondly, I really have a feeling that nowadays

normal person (with balanced life) is a rare thing.

Normality.

It is not that I feel like dividing people in better and worse category.

Well, actually I do...

I actually do feel like it. What I want to say is that nowadays, it is really difficult to meet someone who is "normal".

In a sense that they have pretty normal life,

that they don't have any major problems.

People who do sports, eat healthy, have good relationships with their families and treat they colleagues in normal manner.

But this normality, at times, is also shown in the lack of logical thinking

and unability to predict the consequences of the actions.

To give you an example from this morning.

I tried to leave the house, but our gate got broken and I could not open it with remote control. I had to do it manually.

I called two repair shops which

are in our neighbourhood

to say that I would like someone to repair my gate.

I would like them to come over, take a look what is the problem

and fix it.

One person said "ok" but on Monday.

Well, I prefer someone to come over today or tomorrow.

(it was Friday, Friday morning).

So he said: "Well, I have nothing to write on, so please call me back at 4 pm".

I responded that he can put a reminder on his phone as well.

Asking me, as a client, to call him, is pointless...

If he wants me as a client, he can call me up at 16.00.

He remained persistent and asked me to call him back.

I hanged up and decided to call someone else.

If someone cannot call the client and ask about details...

It means that they won't manage to fix my gate as well, or will do it in a sloppy way.

Second repair shop was a bit more professional,

but when it came to setting up an appointment,

the man on the phone told me it is fine to see each other at 8.30 the next morning,

when I wanted to give him my address...

He said "no no no", because he wasn't next to his laptop.

He asked me to send him a text!

Well, I couldn't send him a text, because I was driving.

I don't want to risk my security and send you a text while driving.

Luckily, he managed to solve the situation promising to call me back in half an hour.

It is great, it is professional.

but why do we even have to have conversations like this?!?!

How come people cannot estimate consequences of their actions?

I know that it is more convenient to ask your client for a text,

because you don't need to take notes...

but in the relationship client - service provider, it is a client that needs convenience,

not the way around.

This is something that

for me is normal, I would feel stupid to ask my client to send me a text.

I make my notes myself.

And actually in majority of cases, I remind my colleagues things,

that's how good my notes are!

I would feel silly to ask my client for something like that, my client who I will ask

to pay me money for a service... to ask for text with details at 4 pm. And maybe to remind me what to do.

It just confirms the fact that there is still a lot to do when it comes to user experience

in Poland.

What I am really happy about, because I find it fascinating

and I will comment the changes.

Regularly.

There was a lady, living in Washington,

who decided to wear the same clothes, every day, for one year.

She came up with an idea and she made it happen.

For 365 days, she wore the same outfit.

I will skip the details...

So every day, 365 days, she wore the same things.

How many people, do you think, noticed that she is all the time dressed the same?

There was one person who noticed something, you know what she said?

"How do you manage to wear red belt every day, with some many different outfits?"

I want to show you something cool.

Only 1000 people have in in the world.

So not that bad...

It is called "Hammerhead" and it is GPS to be used when cycling.

You mount it to the handlebar and the tool shows you how to ride.

In a really pleasant way.

Take a look!

We are riding,

looking at the road,

(not in the camera)....

The dot shows us that the next move we will need to do is to turn right; we are still far away from the turn.

For now, it shows to go straight.

Now, on the next crossroads, we need to turn right.

So we do so!

And we proceed.

It is a really cool thing, I got it on Kick Starter 3 years ago, I backed up this project.

It is one of the best things I ever got on Kick Starter.

Now, the next turn is to the left.

Cool, isn't it?

I simply love it!

You don't need to listen to it, you can see it in the dark,

you can see it in the full sun... it is simply great!

That's a shame that only 1000 people got to get it.

I managed to arrive!

Led by the Hammerhead.

Casey Neistat in his last video gave some tips how to vlog,

quite valuable information I gotta say.

First tip, he gave the exact method he uses for his vlogs.

He says that alright, this is my method

but don't copy it, because if you copy it 100 %

it will not be original.

And that's true. He was the first one who did it.

It is his original method and copying that does not make sense.

In vlogging, what is the most important is being yourself.

and to have an idea for your image.

The second tip was the fact that he does not show all his life,

he does not plan the subject of the episode. He records a lot during the day

and then tries to put together a story.

This is something I will implement on my vlogs.

I won't plan the theme of the vlog from now on,

I will record everything and then decide at the end the topic.

I will choose the pieces for my vlog at the end.

I hope you enjoed my video!

Great Molasses Flood of 1919: History in a Minute (Episode 29) - Duration: 1:51.

Good day, good day everyone. This is Mr.

Philip Campbell with Homeschool

Connections History in a Minute. I am

your bearded nerdy history guru. Have you

ever heard of the Great Molasses Flood?

Yeah, it's definitely a real thing that

happened in the city of Boston on

January 15 1919, when a gigantic storage

tank full of molasses, belonging to the

United States Industrial Alcohol Company,

ruptured spilling 2.3 million gallons of

molasses into the streets of Boston. The

flood was massive. Eyewitnesses say that

the surging wave of molasses crested 35

feet at one point, covering a whole city

block in sticky goo. Unfortunately

several people were caught off guard by

the wave of molasses. 21 people actually

died, buried in the molasses flood and

150 others were wounded. The cleanup took

months and months and months. And they

say that Massachusetts Bay was brown

that whole summer because all the

molasses that got pushed into the bay.

Investigations later found that the

company was guilty of neglecting

essential safety measures. That the tank

had even been leaking molasses ahead of

the disaster. And the company had painted

the tank brown so nobody would notice

the molasses leaks.

Boston locals said that the city smelled

like molasses for years afterwards

whenever it got hot out. Anyhow

definitely one of the more bizarre

man-made disasters in American history.
