THE ROLE OF YOGA IN HEALING TRAUMA - Duration: 6:20.

THE ROLE OF YOGA IN HEALING TRAUMA

Bad back?

Do yoga.

Feeling stressed?

Do yoga.

Want to sweat?

Do yoga?

Need to stretch?

Do yoga.

It seems like the ancient Indian practice of yoga has infiltrated the world with its

wisdom and healing benefits.

As an avid yogi, I can surely attest to its ability to bring stability into my life, but

also, to help me get through deep bouts of anxiety something I have suffered from

my entire life.

Upon meeting my partner, he told me he once suffered from severe lower back pain that

left him depressed, angry, and immobile for months.

Then he did yoga.

Everything changed.

And then theres my friend who was sexually assaulted as a child.

Yoga served as a release from the built-up trauma that made her hips always tight, her

mental state askew.

There are an estimated 10 million women like my friend in America who have been physically

assaulted at some point in their life.

Over a third of these women experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder with increased rates of depression,

obesity, and heart disease.

Then theres the kind of trauma that 26-year-old Missy Hart experienced growing up in gangs,

on the street, in the foster care system, and in institutions.

By age 13 she was incarcerated in juvenile hall for using marijuana.

It was here that she found herself taking part in a mandatory activity called The Art

of Yoga Project, which offers what it calls trauma-sensitive yoga to incarcerated

girls.

Hart found the poses and breathing exercises, over time, to relax.

She loved it.

According to Hart, the practice helped her cope with symptoms of bipolar disorder.

Plenty of research, in alignment with peoples growing interest in yoga for mental wellbeing

as well as physical wellbeing, has brought the ancient practice into the healthcare system.

Past research has found that mindfulness, which is a key part of yoga, could be helpful

in addressing the effects of trauma, as well as symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD

in particular.

Researchers believe that yoga works by promoting adaptive thinking and helping individuals

to decrease repetitive, negative thoughts and ruminations. While physical postures

can help tackle various mental health symptoms.

Now, a new report from the Center on Poverty and Inequality at Georgetown Universitys

law school, reveals that, for young women with traumatic experiences similar to Hart,

yoga can have specific benefits.

Focusing on girls in the juvenile justice system, the report reviewed more than 40 published

studies on the mental health benefits of yoga, and found that with participation in yoga,

fights go down on wards.

Furthermore, the girls request medicine less often, having fewer physical complaints.

Such findings come from speaking to experts in the field, as well as the authors of peer-reviewed

articles and some randomized, controlled trials.

Of the two Georgetown pilot studies examined, girls and young women who did yoga were found

to have better self-esteem and developed skills that they could use in stressful situations.

Such ongoing results of the positive effects yoga has on wellbeing are only increasing

educators and others attention to the science of trauma.

For people who have suffered physical trauma, such as sexual abuse, the Georgetown Law report

argues that yoga may be helpful in the sense that it is a body-mind intervention.

By practicing staying in the moment, sufferers of physical abuse can let the pain of the

past dissipate.

As someone who hasnt suffered physical abuse, I am the student in class who yearns

for the teacher to adjust them, or to give them a light massage in savasana.

But this could be incredibly triggering to someone who has, indeed, experienced such

trauma, which is why yoga that is specifically designed for victims of trauma has modifications.

Missy Hart explains that they always ask you if you want to be touched, for an adjustment

in a pose.

I see now that really helped me.

Other girls who have experienced sexual abuse, sexual trauma or are in there for prostitution

at the age of 13, 14, they had their body image all mixed up.

Being asked to be touched, it gave us a little power back in a place where all our

power is taken, she explained.

Were kids and were being strip-searched.

We cant even go to the bathroom, take a shower, or brush our teeth without asking.

The answer to healing trauma is not so easily defined, but to read of so much research and

personal accounts that praise a holistic practice

as healing is certainly promising.

How does a Doctor Diagnose System Racism Discrimination & Oppression? June 15, 2017 - Duration: 10:11.

okay I'm going to answer some questions here about why is sam's club

questioning my service dog and there's a lot of you have a lot of things you know

like Christie says they can ask you that question is your dog a service animal

it's on the government ada website they can also ask you what train task or work

he does to help you with disabilities but not what your disabilities are well

I don't have to answer I don't have to answer that's my right I don't have to

answer and the thing is how do you how do you diagnose oppression how do you

diagnose generational abuse and so so there's two things that here okay so I

think in my neighborhood I think they've been doing dog training and that in and

of itself I think can be abusive because um we have like one of those

neighborhoods where they have investors and they can do like the air B&B or like

people can come in I think there's been dog training going on in my neighborhood

I feel it in my spine so so there's some sort of techniques or training or

something that they use to train these dogs and so and I'm thinking you know I

get it for some folks you know everybody has a different disability of some sort

something that affects them in a certain way and I always wondered like why why

why did I bite my fingernails for all these years and it's kind of like the

answers were becoming more and more clear and I'm thinking it is it maybe it

was because of the my history and you and you know it's okay I've done a

little research looking up on the American Indians and and it's like so

how do you how do you diagnose generational abuse and and if we look

here it talks about many children died while in

custody at Indian schools the 1928 Miriam report noted that infectious

disease was often riot widespread at schools due to malnutrition overcrowding

poor sanitary conditions and students weakened by overwork the report said the

death rates for the Native American students were six and a half times

higher than any other ethnic group but the thing that I also say too is that

even even when I was a kid in school um we

everything was regimental and I think it was for a lot of people um well I don't

know I mean I don't know because well I say a lot of people where I was from

we were we were west of the Mississippi River

everything was regimental for us you know we get up go to school at a

specific time we got in trouble if we were late we got tardy notices we had to

stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance so we were pledging allegiance to the

flag we had the goofy little haircuts like

they talked about they said that a lot of the kids oh here here in this article

this is on Wikipedia it says to spread a unified national vision and assert

settler color colonial sovereignty over the land the US federal government

undertook a policy of assimilation of diverse people specifically assimilation

of the Native Americans from 1810 to 1917 the US federal government

subsidized the creation of an education with admission and boarding schools by

1885 106 Indian schools had been established many of them on abandoned

military installations using military personnel and Indian prisoners Native

American boarding schools in the United States or seen as the means for the

government to achieve assimilation of Native Americans on the mainstream of

American culture assimilation efforts included forcibly

removing Native Americans from their families

to Christianity and preventing them from learning or practicing indigenous

culture and customs and living in a strict military fashion and yet the

thing is it's like that's a lot of this stuff I mean it's like I granted we

didn't have we didn't have to clean things and stuff like that on the floor

but we still had a very very strict culture and I mean I don't know I the

history makes sense because because they even did include religion in school and

you know it's and it was kind of like if people didn't go to church it was kind

of like they were getting in trouble you know they felt like they were gonna be

punished or something I mean so how do you you know how do you how does a

doctor diagnose that who's never lived my life you know or when you're a little

kid in your tote stop crying stop crying by your parents stop crying stop crying

it's not okay to cry stop crying over and over and over again hat and and

the thing is I understand that my parents went through the same thing so

it's generational it was it was driven into them too I get that part you know

but but at the same time like even now then there's people are like just get

over it just get over it my husband said that to me just get over it you're a big

girl now you need to get over it how do you deal with that and it's like your

whole past of who you are who you wanted to be who you wanted to be just

naturally it's like I remember that when I was a little kid things I wanted to do

I couldn't because there was a society told us something different

so how do you die out how does anyone how does it any doctor how do you train

any doctor to diagnose something like that how do you tell me that how do you

diagnose how does a doctor how do you train a doctor or any physician anyone

to diagnose something like that they can't they can't there's no way there's

absolutely no way this is systemic racism this is systemic discrimination

and so the big fat lie is the fact that somebody came up with this bullshit of

Christopher Columbus and Thanksgiving in the cracked Liberty Bell and all this

bullshit story just to try to get rid of and erase the Native American ancestry

that's what it's about that's what it's about how is this any

different than the Holocaust in Germany I mean the the the information that's

coming out now on the Internet is talking about the little kids who were

killed and murdered and then the evidence was destroyed how is this any

different but yet all this other stuff is worship worshipped from the UM you

know related to the propaganda machine and that agenda but how is this any

different that's what I want to know and so maybe just maybe maybe I've gotten

down to the root cause of why I would do this for 47 years that well the years

that I remember I'm 54 but I could have been doing that or some other things

that I wouldn't remember maybe that's what and you know the thing

I think about too is that when we were in the schools I often wondered like

always we would have Native Americans coming in and dancing at the school and

it kind of had me wondering you know now not not back then back then it was like

I kind of felt like I wanted to participate it was like it just there

was just something about it I wanted to participate but it was like we had that

thing like no we can't you know we're not supposed to you know they're they're

different than er and and then then my grandparents

were always like into rocks and things like that and they just loved exploring

and you know so I don't know it's almost like there is people trying to tell us

things indirectly but how do you pick that up when you're a little kid you

don't you don't you mean when you're told you're told this is this is what

you're supposed to do this is what you're supposed to be and then it's like

if you don't do it or assimilate in the way that they want it's almost like then

there's a some sort of a shock back into well it's them against us you know that

you're not supposed to be that way they created it somebody created who who

created this who did this that's what I want to know who did this I mean who in

the American government is there documentation that's what I want to see

what's the documentation of who designed this who created it what was it just the

Board of Education I mean really this everything needs to be put back into the

hands of the American people because the American people are going to run it a

whole lot better than these corporations because the corporations have just

really ran it into the ground that's what I see but yeah just let me know and
