My name is Paulo Gonçalves
I am the owner of Superfly records
with Manu Boubly and Nicolas Scleris
We specialize in the subculture
that is the research of old vinyl the most lost and obscure the better
I went to the UK in 1996
to get on with my studies and work a bit
and at some point I thought
"I almost in my 30s, it's probably time to start something greater"
and so I thought "Okay I'm going to go to Rio for a sort of gap year"
And when I got there, destiny happened quite quickly
On the second day I directly went digging in a record shop
and there I met I guy who owned another record store
who said to me : "On Sunday there is a record fair in Curitiba"
My name is Marcello Maldonado
I am one of the owners of Satisfaction Discos
I am the producer of Rio de Janeiro's annual record fair
and I have been on the LP market since almost 30 years now
This record shop is one of the oldest ones in Rio
I was a client of this store, Satisfaction, at the time when the old owners were here
and I thought that it was a shame to let the store die
so we thought that the investment in a physical location was worthwhile
I put my whole collection at the store's disposal
and today I feel much happier seeing someone coming here, buying an LP
which might have been mine. Or I listen to it with someone
This brings me great happiness
Rio de Janeiro's record fair is the result of the dedication and work
of a colleague that is not amongst us anymore
who's name is Marcos Oliveira
I remember, we were at the beginning, we were doing the pilot
which took place in Botafogo
We had 24 exhibitors
and we had absolutely no idea what-so-ever
of what public we might attract or what we would find ourselves with
and there is a story that I think truly illustrates that :
the fair was about to open its doors, it was supposed to open at 12:00 PM
and just 15 minutes before the opening
a security guard came to us, called one of the people in charge
and he asked "What is happening here?"
and the guy in charge answered: "It's an event, it's a record fair you know"
the guard said: "You need to open this thing like now, because there is a crowd of people waiting outside
And I get there and boom: it was this incredible record fair
and I felt I was in paradise
there were records everywhere
I didn't expect that at all
I hadn't seen such a concentration and fever of record shops,
of interest in vinyl, of passion
I was amazed
Record buyers come to a record fair to satisfy their clients' needs
who like our music
What we see today is also a local public
and groups that resist, but who show an interest
for this music, these artists of that time
I bought something like 300-400 records in a week-end
That is how I became a record dealer, without really bearing a kind of responsibility for it
the passion was becoming so strong, it had become almost irresistible
I think music bears something essential in life
and I think that anything considered as essential is meant to be shared
I think we have an important responsibility
of preserving and spreading of this culture to younger generations
also because they are the ones who are currently oxygenating the LP market
My name is Marcello MB Groove
I am a DJ, music producer
I am part of the "Vinyl é Arte" ("Vinyl is Art") collective
Which is a collective of 6 DJs
who are located in 3 Brazilian cities
Rio de Janeiro, in Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais) and in Sao Paulo
My interest in founded, in my DJ sets as well as in my productions
in the idea of building an imaginary bridge between: Africa, Brazil as well as South and North America
trace this path that was walked by the slaves at the time
what their music brought to each continent
and what was blended there, creating new things
this is the interest I nurture in the work I do
Building a DJ set where I will weave this type of music
and show to the public
90 % of what I have discovered in terms of other cultures, different settings
really was through music
what I have realized is that it is the best way to travel
because it is a passion that is mainly nurtured by curiosity
it is something that is constant evolution
and that's how the idea emerged
of bringing vinyl closer to the public
and we built a group to go clubbing all together
So Vinyl é Arte has this goal, to bring new people, new artists
within the vinyl sphere
So we have the "Lo-fis"
which are small records made from different material
which are more accessible
Bruno, in Sao Paulo, owns a vinyl press which is from the 50s
and we also have new presses aimed to experiment the use of new materials
Here in Rio
its is very hard
the conditions for a vinyl kind of DJ
Many venues don't have record decks
or the DJ's fee plus the renting one (for the decks) ends up being unbearable
So above all else, the DJ who works with vinyl needs to be a kind of warrior
Because it is a constant gamble
The only thing you can do is go all in and live this genuinely
Who suffers? The public
Who doesn't get the broad access it deserves
or ends up not knowing what's going on
Sao Paulo, economically, is much stronger
The real difference between Sao Paulo and Rio for such initiatives is the artists' quality
Rio de Janeiro, between us who survive
or re-open, as some of us re-opened stores for example
we are an extremely disorganized market
unfortunately
we are not united
we should be more united
because when you have a united market
you have true follow-up
and you can achieve dialogs with industries much more collectively
You can unite to release someone's record
You can unite to bring back someone of the time, that didn't get the recognition it deserved
to release a new piece, promote a series of shows, to commemorate or celebrate their work
