Is Human Hibernation Possible? Going to Sleep for Long Duration Spaceflight - Duration: 9:42.

We've spent a few episodes on the Guide to Space talking about just how difficult

it's going to be to travel to other stars.

Sending tiny unmanned probes across the vast gulfs between stars is still mostly science

fiction.

But to send humans on that journey?

That's just a level of technology beyond comprehension.

For example, the nearest star is Proxima Centauri, located a mere 4.25 light years away.

Just for comparison, the Voyager spacecraft, the most distant human objects ever built

by humans, would need about 50,000 years to make that journey.

I don't know about you, but I don't anticipate living 50,000 years.

No, we're going to want to make the journey more quickly.

But the problem, of course, is that going more quickly requires more energy, new forms

of propulsion we've only starting to dream up.

And if you go too quickly, mere grains of dust floating through space become incredibly

dangerous.

Based on our current technology, it's more likely that we're going to have to take

our time getting to another star.

And if you're going to go the slower route, you've got a couple of options.

Create a generational ship, so that successive generations of humans are born, live out their

lives, and then die during the hundreds or even thousands of year long journey to another

star.

Imagine you're one of the people destined to live and die, never reaching your destination.

Especially when you look out your window and watch a warp ship zip past with all those

happy tourists headed to Proxima Centauri, who were start enough to wait for warp drives

to be invented.

No, you want to sleep for the journey to the nearest star, so that when you get there,

it's like no time passed.

And even if warp drive did get invented while you were asleep, you didn't have to see

their smug tourist faces as they zipped past.

Is human hibernation possible?

Can we do it long enough to survive a long-duration spaceflight journey and wake up again on the

other side?

Before I get into this, we're just going to have to assume that we never merge with

our robot overlords, upload ourselves into the singularity, and effortlessly travel through

space with our cybernetic bodies.

For some reason, that whole singularity thing never worked out, or the robots went on strike

and refused to do our space exploration for us any more.

And so, the job of space travel fell to us, the fragile, 80-year lifespanned mammals.

Exploring the worlds within the Solar System and out to other stars, spreading humanity

into the cosmos.

Come on, we know it'll totally be the robots.

But that's not what the science fiction tells us, so let's dig into it.

We see animals, and especially mammals hibernating all the time in nature.

In order to be able survive over a harsh winter, animals are capable of slowing their heart

rate down to just a few beats a minute.

They don't need to eat or drink, surviving on their fat stores for months at a time until

food returns.

It's not just bears and rodents that can do it, by the way, there are actually a couple

of primates, including the fat-tailed dwarf lemur from Madagascar.

That's not too far away on the old family tree, so there might be hope for human hibernation

after all.

In fact, medicine is already playing around with human hibernation to improve people's

chances to survive heart attacks and strokes.

The current state of this technology is really promising.

They use a technique called therapeutic hypothermia, which lowers the temperature of a person by

a few degrees.

They can use ice packs or coolers, and doctors have even tried pumping a cooled saline solution

through the circulatory system.

With the lowered temperature, a human's metabolism decreases and they fall unconscious

into a torpor.

But the trick is to not make them so unconscious that they die.

It's a fine line.

The results have been pretty amazing.

People have been kept in this torpor state for up to 14 days, going through multiple

cycles.

The therapeutic use of this torpor is still under research, and doctors are learning if

it's helpful for people with heart attacks, strokes or even the progression of diseases

like cancer.

They're also trying to figure out if there are any downsides, but so far, there don't

seem to be any long-term problems with putting someone in this torpor state.

In a moment, I'm going to talk about a project that NASA is actually considering to test

out if this therapeutic hypothermia will be useful for long duration human spaceflight,

but first I'd like to thank Donald Jackson, Mike and Sherri Reed, Andrew Wasko, and the

rest of our 743 patrons for their generous support.

If you love what we're doing and want to get in on the action, head over to patreon.com/universetoday

A few years ago, SpaceWorks Enterprises delivered a report to NASA on how they could use this

therapeutic hypothermia for long duration spaceflight within the Solar System.

Currently, a trip to Mars takes about 6-9 months.

And during that time, the human passengers are going to be using up precious air, water

and food.

But in this torpor state, SpaceWorks estimates that the crew will a reduction in their metabolic

rate of 50 to 70%.

Less metabolism, less resources needed.

Less cargo that needs to be sent to Mars.

The astronauts wouldn't need to move around, so you could keep them nice and snug in little

pods for the journey.

And they wouldn't get into fights with each other, after 6-9 months of nothing but day

after day of spaceflight.

We know that weightlessness has a negative effect on the body, like loss of bone mass

and atrophy of muscles.

Normally astronauts exercise for hours every day to counteract the negative effects of

the reduced gravity.

But SpaceWorks thinks it would be more effective to just put the astronauts into a rotating

module and let artificial gravity do the work of maintaining their conditioning.

They envision a module that's 4 metres high and 8 metres wide.

If you spin the habitat at 20 revolutions per minute, you give the crew the equivalent

of Earth gravity.

Go at only 11.8 RPM and it'll feel like Mars gravity.

Down to 7.8 and it's lunar gravity.

Normally spinning that fast in a habitat that small would be extremely uncomfortable as

the crew would experience different forces at different parts of their body.

But remember, they'll be in a state of torpor, so they really won't care.

Current plans for sending colonists to Mars would require 40 ton habitats to support 6

people on the trip.

But according to SpaceWorks, you could reduce the weight down to 15 tons if you just let

them sleep their way through the journey.

And the savings get even better with more astronauts.

The crew probably wouldn't all sleep for the entire journey.

Instead, they'd sleep in shifts for a few weeks.

Taking turns to wake up, check on the status of the spacecraft and crew before returning

to their cryosleep caskets.

What's the status of this now?

NASA funded stage 1 of the SpaceWorks proposal, and in July, 2016 NASA moved forward with

Phase 2 of the project, which will further investigate this technique for Mars missions,

and how it could be used even farther out in the Solar System.

Elon Musk should be interested in seeing their designs for a 100-person module for sending

colonists to Mars.

In addition, the European Space Agency has also been investigating human hibernation,

and a possible way to enable long-duration spaceflight.

They have plans to test out the technology on various non-hibernating mammals, like pigs.

If their results are positive, we might see the Europeans pushing this technology forward.

Can we go further, putting people to sleep for decades and maybe even the centuries it

would take to travel between the stars?

Right now, the answer is no.

We don't have any technology at our disposal that could do this.

We know that microbial life can be frozen for hundreds of years.

Right now there are parts of Siberia unfreezing after centuries of permafrost, awakening ancient

microbes, viruses, plants and even animals.

But nothing on the scale of human beings.

When humans freeze, ice crystals form in our cells, rupturing them permanently.

There is one line of research that offers some hope: cryogenics.

This process replaces the fluids of the human body with an antifreeze agent which doesn't

form the same destructive crystals.

Scientists have successfully frozen and then unfrozen 50-milliliters (almost a quarter

cup) of tissue without any damage.

In the next few years, we'll probably see this technology expanded to preserving organs

for transplant, and eventually entire bodies, and maybe even humans.

Then this science fiction idea might actually turn into reality.

We'll finally be able to sleep our way between the stars.

Obviously, I'd like to know, would you do it?

Would you get into a device that allowed you to sleep through the journey to a distant

world or star system?

I'd love to know your thoughts in the comments.

In the next episode, we look at some newly announced missions to Uranus and Neptune.

That's right, I'm going to talk about sending a probe to Uranus to study its gas.

Time for another playlist, so you can dig much deeper into this really interesting topic.

First up, a cool video about hibernating bears.

Not sure if it's super useful, but aww, look at those baby bears sleeping.

An episode on the topic from SciShow.

A report from the Wall Street Journal about NASA's hibernation plans.

And finally, two lectures from researchers in the field of human hibernation.

Would you get into a device that allowed you to sleep through the journey to a distant

world - oh, let's go back.

'We will lay down our nuclear weapons' North Korea in shock announcement - DAILY NEWS - Duration: 2:19.

'We will lay down our nuclear weapons' North Korea in shock announcement

NORTH Korea is prepared to give up its nuclear weapons in a landmark deal with the United

States.

One of the rogue nation's ambassadors, Kye Chun Yong, admitted in an interview that a

peace deal was something Kim Jon-un is considering.

Speaking to India's Gravitas programme, Mr Yong said: "Under certain circumstances,

we are willing to talk in terms of the freezing of nuclear testing and missile testing.

"For instance, if the American side completely stopped big, large-scale military exercises

temporarily or permanently, then we will also temporarily stop.

"Let's talk about how to solve the Korean issue peacefully."

Tensions between the US and North Korea have never been worse after American student Otto

Warmbier died shortly after his release from the hermit state.

The 21-year-old was detained in Pyongyang in January 2016 and sentenced to 15 years

of hard labour for allegedly trying to steal a propaganda poster.

The regime released him last week but he had suffered catastrophic brain injuries while

in captivity and was in a coma.

He died on Monday just days after returning home.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly vowed to deal with Kim Jong-un's regime.

He has previously warned North Korea is treading on thin ice and sent a pair of B1-B bombers

theatre capable of carrying nuclear weapons to the Peninsula.

Queer Media Thoughts - Duration: 14:34.

Hello I'm Rogan and welcome back. Today will be one take, I will try anyway.

This is unscripted too, because—that's why I'm doing one take, I have no script.

This is all or mostly my thoughts. Before we start, I want to ask you all.

It just so happened that the past three videos for Pride month are all history.

About the flag, Stonewall Riots, the Pulse shooting and UpStairs Lounge fire.

It just happened, I didn't mean to, but sure that's fine. And a couple videos upcoming will be history.

I want to ask this - should I go ahead and make Queer History an official series on my channel, like I do for ASL Ponderings.

Should I go ahead and do that with Queer History too?

Like in the title then have the "__ | Queer History," should I do that? Let me know if that's a thing I should do.

Okay. If you already saw the title, I will be talking about movies slash—Media. Media in general.

I will be talking about When We Rise, Moonlight, and Gender Revolution, my thoughts.

I have notes here and on my laptop.

I'm going to start with When We Rise.

It's a series on ABC, it first aired on Feb. 27th and continued until Mar. 3rd, this year - 2017.

It's basically about queer history since… This starts right after the Stonewall Riots in 1969.

It starts around 1970 and goes to, well, now. It follows three main people in queer history.

Cleve Jones, Roma Guy, and Ken Jones. They're the ones that are most consistent in all four parts.

It includes Roma's girlfriend, then later wife, Diane Jones.

They also have appearances from Gilbert Baker, the creator of the flag; Cecilia Chung, a transgender activist.

I'll sum up what it's about first, then I'll give you my thoughts about it.

It's broken up into technically eight parts, but if you go to the ABC website—it's free, has captions.

It's split into "nights" and there are four nights in total. Night I & II happen during around 1970 to 1980s.

Like I said, right after Stonewall Riots, 1970.

It follows Cleve and his coming out as gay to his family, moving to San Francisco because he heard it was

really good for queer people there. So he moved, got involved with activism, all of that. The same with Roma.

Basically, that whole growing movement, queer movement, in that time.

Going until the 80s, that's around when AIDS started to spread. At the time, it was called GRID.

OH! Gay-related immunodeficiency (disease). There we go. Wow. Forgot the R for a moment. Anyway.

Night III jumps to 10 years later, in the 90s. Night III happens during the 90s, 1992, 1997, around that.

That's when Cleve Jones created the AIDS quilt and put it on the White House lawn.

Going to ACT UP, more political activism, Human Rights Campaign.

All of that, the establishment of organizations, more political activism than protests.

Night IV starts in the 2000s, 2008—I remember 2008 specifically, but a bit before that like 2006, 2008.

…to 2015, ending in 2015. That section follows Prop 8 in California, Prop 8.

For making homosexuality illegal (excuse me being extreme), banning people from marrying, all of that.

The protests, Supreme Court overturning Prop 8, saying it's unconstitutional. All of that.

Obama signing papers. All of that.

It ends in 2015 when Supreme Court declared marriage is legal for everyone. That's when it ends.

Okay now that is a basic summary. Now my thoughts on it… Um.

Night I and II, a little of III, but Night I and II were really specific, in depth.

It actually had details of how things happened.

OH! I want to mention, all of the people I mentioned - Cleve, Roma, Ken - all were consultants on this.

Like, the real people were consultants on this show, so it's not like they made up the story.

No, they had the real people tell their story, and made a movie from it - I mean a series from it.

I feel a little bit…

The beginning had good details, was actually interesting but then starting around Night III, I felt mm… I don't know.

It could have been done a little bit better.

And it doesn't help that it had a different director for each of the four parts. So… That complicates things.

Night III and IV felt really superficial, not very in-depth.

The plot wasn't—yes, it's real life events but it didn't really add that many really touching, REAL stories so…

It felt a little bit lacking at the end. But… Overall, it's a good basic overview at history.

So yeah, I would recommend you watch it but only if you have a lot of time [laughs]

because each part is about a hour and halfish. Because of the two parts thing, so.

Yeah that is my…

I don't really have that many thoughts about it because I feel a little meh about it, the ending part of it.

Overall, good. I'm going to go ahead and move on.

Because of time, I just looked and oh it's already seven minutes, eight minutes. Moving on.

Moonlight. Really good! I watched it just two days ago, it's on Amazon Prime if you want to watch it.

It's so good. It deserves that Oscar.

It was a little bit unexpected. It's split into three chapters.

The whole thing focuses on one person, mostly his story.

The first chapter is when he's about 10 years old, I think 10? Second is around high school, so 16, 17?

The third part is in his 30s? 30s? Early 30s, late 20s? And… it is good.

One thing that I really liked is that they never actually SAID gay. They were vague.

He could be gay, he could be bi, he could be queer. But there was no specific labeling, "I am gay." Nothing.

I liked that. I liked that they left it ambiguous.

No, really it's good. I would definitely recommend you watch it.

I don't want to tell you too much because I want you to watch it, it's really good.

Okay, now Gender Revolution. It's…It has a connection. I have the DVD from National Geographic.

And I also have the magazine. I bought this in the store, because I don't have a National Geographic subscription.

But if you have a subscription, that specific issue will have a different cover.

That cover will be of a trans girl with very pink hair, you can find it online.

But yeah, I got that magazine when it was first released because I was like, I need this.

It…is fascinating, really good. And then this is, it's a little bit, hmm.

It's interesting because this is not, it's kind of like a documentary but it's with Katie Couric.

She travels the country, talking with people who are in different parts related to this,

like intersex, trans, whatever. And… I think it's good.

But I'm really, really disappointed that the special features don't have captions. They almost never do.

I'm always pleasantly surprised when they do actually have subtitles. But this doesn't.

So that's a little unfortunate. I'm hoping to maybe look online and find them with subtitles but. Anyway.

This is good because Katie Couric, she is learning in this, during this, she's learning about gender,

how people relate with it, about intersex, about trans people, all of that. So I thought that was cool.

But it's a lot of stuff that if you are trans, or if you are intersex,

or you have a good understanding of gender, this is nothing really new.

So I would recommend this to people who are struggling with understanding gender, and the magazine too.

The magazine is probably better because you can read at your own pace.

And the magazine has a little bit more specifics in it about certain things. So. Yeah.

That was a really, really quick overview.

What I would recommend most of these three, Moonlight.

[trying to figure out a better way of signing moonlight] Anyway. That's what I would recommend the most.

Watch that first, hands down. Watch that first, if you haven't already.

If you have, comment below and let me know what you thought of it. Okay.

Yeah, I'm already at 12 minutes, and I don't want to edit. [text: Still edited a bit lol] So I'm going to shut up now.

I do want to add one more thing. Spoiler warning! Spoiler alert for Madam Secretary.

If you watch that TV show, and you haven't caught up on all the recent episodes,

and you don't want to be spoiled, stop now. [text: Jump to 14:00]

But the last episode of the most recent season, I think season three? Anyway, it's online.

There is one character that came out as bi. Aaaaaahhh! Finally!

In media, in general, there aren't really any good representations of bi characters. Bi specifically, bi.

Gay—yeah, we still don't really have good representation for "mainstream sexualities" --

gay, lesbian, trans (not a sexuality!). It's still ehh representation for those, but bi people? Pfft forget it.

They don't get representation for them. So.

When I saw that they had someone come out and say they are bi, ah, yes!

And the way they did it, beautiful. It wasn't… It was done really well, did it really well.

So far, it's only this character to Madam Secretary. No coming out to their co-workers.

Oh yeah, I didn't say who the character was! The character is Blake Moran.

The whole series, people think he's gay, he looks gay. But no, he's bi. So I'm like yes!

Thank you for making him bi, not gay. Thank you!

Okay I'm approaching 15 minutes, so I'm going to stop now.

Thanks for watching, let me know all your thoughts about all of this down below. And yeah.

Scary Things Recorded in People's Homes

Have you ever caught something creepy on your camera ? Maybe even in your own home ? This

idea for certain might be one of the most terrifying things that could happen to you.

And in today's episode, we will take a look at some videos that have caught scary and

unexplainable things on tape.

While this man is recording himself during his piano practice.. he hears an unexplainable

noise that seems to be stemming from the kitchen.

According to him, he was haunted for quite some time already when this video was recorded.

According to the author, this boy is talking about a recently deceased family member and

walks through a little chapel, which is located in the backyard of his uncle.

The exact place, where they had stored the deceased one.

A video from YouTuber An Everyday Canadian.. let's hear him explain the situation that

is taking place here.

This clip was recorded in an abandoned house in Asia, in which the owner had passed away

recently.

Could the person behind the camera capture a spirit?

Due to an upcoming move, this man was about to film the storage unit in his basement.

But he captured something else.

The women moved into her new house recently, and noticed strange occurrences now and then.

This night, while she is home alone, she's up for another surprise.

Thank

you guys for watching.

ONE JUROR TOLD ABC NEWS THAT 10

OF THE 12 JURORS AGREED THAT

COSBY WAS GUILTY ON TWO OF THE

ASSAULT COUNTS.

THE GROUP DELIBERATED FOR MORE

THAN 50 HOURS AND THE MOOD WAS

THIS IS WORKING NORTHWARD.

ON THE RIGHT, YOU SEE

THUNDERSTORMS.

THEY ARE PUTTING THE WATCHES OUT

TO 3:00 IN THE MORNING.

THEN MOVING INLAND IT WILL LOSE

ITS CHARACTERISTIC QUICKLY.

EARLY MORNING, FRIDAY, DOWN TO

THUNDERSTORMS MORE THAN ANYTHING

MASS, THEY ARE ALL GONE.

WE WILL HAVE MORE TO TALK ABOUT

FOR FRIDAY.

I WILL HAVE THE DETAILS.

BEN: AN ATTACK ON A POLICE

OFFICER INSIDE THE AIRPORT

TERMINAL IN FLINT, MICHIGAN

BEING TREATED AS A POSSIBLE

TERRORISM INCIDENT.

TONIGHT THE OFFICER IS

RECOVERING FROM A NECK WOU

WHILE THE SUSPECT'S ACTIONS AND

WORDS ARE UNDER SCRUTINY.

THE ATTACK HAPPENED INSIDE THE

TERMINAL.

A MAN RAN UP TO A POLICE OFFICER

AND STABBED HIM IN THE NECK.

THEY COULD BE ASKED TO VOTE ON

IT NEXT WEEK.

DONALD TRUMP: I HOPE WE'RE GOING

TO SURPRISE YOU WITH A REALLY

GOOD PLAN.

YOU KNOW, I'VE BEEN TALKING

ABOUT A PLAN WITH HEART.

SAID, AT SOME MONEY TO IT.

BEN: A SURPRISE IS CERTAINLY

WHAT IT IS.

CHUCK SCHUMER: THEY ARE ASHAMED

OF THEIR BILL.

THEY DON'T WANT ANYBODY TO SEE

IT.

BEN: FOR WEEKS BEHIND CLOSED

DOORS, GOP SENATE LEADERS HAVE

DRAFTED A BILL TO REPEAL AND

REPLACE OBAMACARE, ANGERING

DEMOCRATS AND SOME REPUBLICANS.

JOHN MCCAIN: HAVEN'T SEEN IT,

HOW CAN I PUT MY SUPPORT BEHIND

IT, OR NOT BEHIND IT, IF I

MITCH MCCONNELL: A DISCUSSION

DRAFT WILL BE MADE PUBLIC

TOMORROW.

EVERY MEMBER OF THE SENATE WILL

HAVE IT.

THE BILL

WHICH IS SIMILAR TO THE PLAN

PASSED BY THE HOUSE LAST MONTH

WITH A COUPLE OF BIG CHANGES,

LIKE SUBSIDIES TO HELP PEOPLE

BUY INSURANCE WILL BE TIED TO

INCOME NOT AGE, AS IN THE HOUSE

BILL.

THE SENATE PLAN ALSO ROLLS BACK

THE EXPANSION OF MEDICAID, A

PROGRAM RUN BY THE STATES FOR

LOWER INCOME INDIVIDUALS, BUT IT

DOES IT MORE SLOWLY THAN THE

HOUSE BILL.

AND THE SENATE PLAN REPEALS ALL

OBAMACARE TAXES, EXCEPT THE TAX

ON VERY EXPENSIVE, SO-CALLED

CADILLAC HEALTH PLANS.

IT'S NOT CLEAR IF SENATE

REPUBLICANS HAVE 50 VOTES FOR

THIS BILL.

DEMOCRATS SAY THEY'LL FIGHT IT.

ELIZABETH WARREN: ARE YOU READY

TO FIGHT BACK FOR EVERY HUMAN

BEING IN THIS COUNTRY?

BEN: YOU KNOW IT IS UNCLEAR

, TONIGHT HOW THIS SENATE BILL

WILL HANDLE THOSE PRE-EXISTING

CONDITIONS, IF IT WILL LET

STATES CHANGE THE RULES TO ALLOW

INSURERS TO CHARGE PATIENTS WITH

PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS MORE

MONEY.

BECAUSE IT'S CLEAR THAT, I

THINK, ACROSS THE BOARD IN THE

DEMOCRATIC PARTY, WE NEED NEW

LEADERSHIP

IT'S TIME FOR A NEW GENERATION

OF LEADERSHIP IN THE PARTY.

THE MORNING FOR DAY NUMBER OF

TWO DELIBERATIONS IN THE MURDER

TRIAL OF MICHAEL MCCARTHY.

HE OF COURSE IS ACCUSED OF

BEATING TWO-YEAR-OLD BELLA BOND

TO DEATH BEFORE DUMPING HER BODY

IN THE BOSTON HARBOR.

BUT THE DEFENSE BLAMES THE

GIRL'S MOTHER, RACHELLE BOND,

WHO WAITED MONTHS TO REPORT HER

DAUGHTER'S DEATH, THEN TESTIFIED

FOR THE PROSECUTION AS PART OF A

PLEA DEAL.

WHEN HIS 11-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER

GIRL DESERVED TO BE DISCIPLINED,

AND THAT HER BOYFRIEND DIDN'T

USE A BELT.

BEN: INVESTIGATES, DISCOVERY

TONIGHT OFFICIAL COURT REPORTERS
