what follows is another independent and honest buyer's guide that calls a spade
a spade, this time it's in review of the sitemark
tactical red dot model number SM13041, okay welcome back
now since recording the introduction about two hours of now passed even
though it would have only looked like about 10 seconds for you I'm embarrassed
to say that today it feels like I'm a living in a third world country even
though I'm not, we've had about six power cuts in the last yea over that last two
hours and with almost comic like timing the power cuts would always happen when
I was halfway through doing the start of the recording so if I look a little bit
nervous and glancing up at the lighting from time to time it's because I am
nervous about how long this power is going to last so we'll try and get
through this review quickly not only to keep the video short but also to
hopefully complete it while the power touch wood is still going, so first up
what shall we talk about the sitemark tactical red dot the first question is
where does it even belong in the market I can say that at the time of
researching it it was a $78 red dot give or take depending on which retailer I
was looking at and in my mind that well and truly puts it in this value category
or value part of the market now as in with any value product there are going
to be trade-offs because the manufacturer has to do something to
bring the price point down now that's fine as long as you know what the trade-offs
are and can make a judgement call as to whether they are acceptable to you
things that you're willing to live with so hopefully this video is going to go a
long way in assisting you in making that decision let's we get into it while the
power is still going, the format for this episode is we're going to be looking at
what the positive reviews highlight we are then going to talk about things to
consider which are not by themselves either a positive or a negative they are
just one of the things to consider in making
a decision and then we're going to talk about what the critical reviews
highlight having done so you should then hopefully be in a good position to make
a judgment call on this product so positive reviews the first thing I
identified or noticed with in reading the positive reviews is that a lot of
people talked about how they love the fact that with this optic you can do an
absolute co witness with your back up iron sights on an ar-15 now you know
obviously this being a tick it depends on whether you want to do that or not
but assuming that that is something you would like to do or to have the option
to do this is one of the positives that are talked about for this optic moving
on people like the fact that it includes pop-up caps although I do note that they
in the same positive reviews they say that they slide off easily so in
practical terms this means they'll be good for storage and transportation but
perhaps won't be good for you know run n gun 3-gun these sorts of things
where you're bouncing around the place etc nonetheless I don't want to distract
from the the the topic that people like the fact that these pop-up caps are
included with the optic at this price point so that's the second positive the
third highlight from the positive reviews is people saying that the glass
is not too green now for those of you who have looked at more than just a
handful of reviews about value red dots you'll know this typically goes with the
territory in regards to value red dots and that you can expect a noticeable or
strong green or blueish tint depending on who's describing it so in this case
it seems it's well within people's expectations and they consider it good
for the price point next up is the fact that the caps on this this optic are
tethered people appreciate that you may or may not have noticed that in the
pictures and lastly to sort of summarize why people like the optic there's sort
of a reoccurring theme in different positive reviews and I'm kind of going
to paraphrase it here, a lot of people making comparisons to an aimpoint which
of course is not an apples to apples comparison
and the aimpoint is you know a high-end red dot it's also a heck of a lot more
expensive but nonetheless people want to know how it compares and they talk about
this a lot in the positive reviews, now to paraphrase a user who has used
both the aimpoint and the sitemark tactical red dot and this is kind of
combining a few different comments together he's basically saying you can
definitely distinguish between the two but if you're not up to spending the
money on an aimpoint you'll undoubtedly be pleasantly surprised with the sightmark
now that's coming from someone who's had a good experience with the
sitemark this sort of sentiment is echoed by many other positive reviews in
which that's kind of the theme in that it's not an aimpoint but for the money
you're getting a lot, and if I were to write you know an honest sales pitch as
opposed to all the hype you get with a lot of the product descriptions out
there I would write something to the effect of for this product if you're
looking to the best out there this isn't it but it's surprisingly good
for the money so hopefully this sort of theme kind of
sums up for you why you might want to consider the sitemark tactical red dot
and what positive reviewers like about it
moving on to things to consider the sitemark this one the tactical red dot is
officially a 5 MOA dot size as in five inches across at 100 yards but a lot of
reviewers suggest that it in practical terms that's actually they believe it to
be bigger than that, they didn't actually put a number on it but they are saying
they don't think the official specifications are actually correct in
that regards, so suffice to say it is a bigger red dot even 5 MOA is
getting to the big size so perhaps at 6 or 7 o.a MOA sorry
in practical terms now this can be a positive or a negative for you bigger
dots are good for speed shooting short range shooting quick target acquisition
transitions all the sort of stuff good on a carbine for that type of shooting
conversely if you're wanting to push out longer ranges or do more precision type
shooting then an optic with a smaller dot size is going to serve you better so it
just depends on what application you're looking for this one is very much geared
up for the short-range speed shooting type applications next up the second
consideration is the battery type now this optic has what some people refer
to as oddball type batteries I'm not quite sure if I'd use that terminology
but they're definitely not batteries that I see on a lot of red dots that I've
reviewed personally basically it uses two LR44 batteries so the question to
ask yourself is are they commonly available where you live what sort of
price point are they at yep that's it really moving on critical
reviews and hopefully we'll get through this all the lights are still going I
still feel nervous the critical reviews now first up before we get into the
nitty gritty about the critical reviews I noticed that on the Amazon
website under the product description that they devoted most of the paragraph
to talking about troubleshooting tips now this is kind of interesting first of
all it tells you that there have been multiple issues that they've been getting
feedback about it also tells you though that to Amazon's credit they're being
proactive and they're telling you about it and in recommending what's going to
avoid these problems or resolve these problems but none the less for you as
you know a decision maker as to whether you're going to buy it or not its
interesting to see because obviously these issues must to come up frequently
enough for Amazon to go to the effort to write up these troubleshooting tips that
they actually put in the product description so I could just send you up
to read them but it's basically on two topics I'm talking about an issue with
the unit shutting off and that its they're recommending a specific way of
installing the batteries and a way to avoid installing the batteries I'll let
you read there you can check it out on the amazon website the link is below
just look in the product description, the second thing they're talking about is
the mount coming loose and talking about the the torque specification that you
need how tight you need to tighten up the the nut or the bolt if you will to
keep it tightened a bit of Loctite I would add and some of the critical
reviewers also add would go a long way to helping with this issue I don't want
to dwell on this for too long because you can read that on the amazon product
description so those were two issues suffice to say that they must have come
up a decent number of times for them to noted those two issues let's we move on
the second thing I've noted down under critical review highlights is that a lot
of people describe the brightness settings as being a joke and basically
describing settings 1 to 3 as basically being the same and too dim for
outdoors use whereas settings four and five they say are usable in sunlight so
you know this is something you might be happy to live with it is a value red dot
and at that price point of 78 you know your expectations do have to be
realistic nonetheless I pass this on to you so that you know that the the
subtle differences in brightness settings that you might be used to in
some other red dots or maybe some have more expensive red dots are not
necessarily what you're going to see with this product
enough said number three officially the battery life is 50 hours in practical
terms I can say from my research that most users report that they get
somewhere between 15 and 20 hours practically out of the batteries so a
lot of users talking about it's important to keep spare batteries at
hand and some people using some colorful
wording to describe basically that they're are not too impressed with the battery life I'm
just going to pass you the data fifteen to twenty eight hours is kind of a
message that I'm getting for most of the reviewers so it's probably fair to say
battery life is not particularly flash so this is part of your consideration
look at how much you're going to be spending on these LR44 batteries and are
you willing to change them out frequently that's part of the
consideration the other consideration is that will affect the practical uses for
the optic let's we move on the product is made in China
once again you know there's trade-offs it's a value red dot but I pass that on
to you so you've got the straight information now on this topic of quality
control and on this topic that Amazon touched on about the mounts coming
loose there is a lot of negative feedback about the mounts coming loose
loosening up very easily people calling it you know a junk mount even tighten
down it slides under force a lot of strong recommendations for using Loctite
liberally and you know in really cranking up the mounting bolt to make
sure it doesn't come loose so in their regards I'm just going to refer back to
the Amazon troubleshooting tips they are recommending tightening it too a certain torque
level so I'd recommend if you do buy this that you follow the Amazon
recommendations plus you know slather on some Loctite to avoid this issue number
five there is actually a significant or noticeable number of critical reviews
reporting a disappearing red dot or the red dot simply ceasing to turn on or
turning off after each shot now these sorts of complaints are typical
complaints that you will see about other value red dots but in this case I did
notice a higher number of such complaints so I think the fairest thing
to say is if you buy this value Red dot you could be very well pleasantly
surprised that the value get for the money but you need to probably understand that
realistically you are rolling the dice a little bit you could get a good one you
could get a lemon so if you decide to roll the dice on it you know make sure
you get it from a retailer with a good returns policy check it through
thoroughly check all the functionality make sure you've got a good one while
you're still in the returns period now where we up to again some other quality
control issues quite a few complaints saying the optic looks good but it sort
of falls apart quickly or they started having issues quickly yep enough said on
that next up the site view there were some critical reviewers saying that the
site view isn't very good some people's perhaps who were not very
impressed said that it would be okay for airsoft but not something that trust
their life on, yeah up to you how much weight you put on that there were these
sorts of comments coming up so I think you kind of get the picture this is
definitely not a high-end product the site picture may not be perfect the
battery life may not be perfect there are some quality control issues if you
buy it you kind of just need to go into the eyes open knowing that you could
have some of these issues and it's not I mean it does have some limitations so
you need to realistically know what it is for the price point at the same time
it seems a lot of users have purchased it and just been very happy and avoided
all the issues now in regards to the numbers for if you're like a gambler or
you know you want to calculate your chances of getting a good one versus a
lemon what I can say is this particular product had a high number of critical
reviews compared to other value red dots I looked at so just to give you
an example from the Amazon reviews 28% of the total number of reviews were
critical reviews and by that I mean one or two star reviews so that's you know
almost one and three reviews are critical and usually because of these
issues that we just run through so this is why I think
it's very fair to say you've got a good chance of being pleasantly surprised and
getting very good value for money but at the same time you're the one in
three you could luck out so seriously my
strongest recommendation here is if you're willing to roll the dice and hope
to be one of the two out of three who are happy that's great but just buy it
from a retailer for good returns policy when you get the optic make sure you
check each of these items that the critical reviews have highlighted make
sure you don't have any of these issues while you're still in the return period
probably enough said I'll let you make the judgment call on that now moving on
to suggested applications I'm going to suggest this optic is perhaps an option
to consider for uses one through to four but I'm definitely rolling out home
defense law enforcement and military use military use easy to you know write it
off to that this is a value red dot it's not intended for those sorts of
applications in regards to home defense and law enforcement as with some other
value red dots I've reviewed it's not that it couldn't be used in those
applications but I wouldn't recommend it especially with the 15 to 20 hour
battery life that people are practically reporting personally I think that's too
short for the sort of serious applications like home defense law
enforcement and in those applications if I were in that situation I'd not want to
be worrying about the battery life when I really needed it so that's my take on
it I'll leave it with you to make your judgment call
I'm very glad that the power hasn't cut off as yet we'll quickly move on and
wrap this video up thank you okay so we're still here that cameras still
going the lights are still going so it seems the power gods are smiling on us
at the moment nonetheless we have now reached the end and this concludes this
buyer's guide in review of the sitemark tactical red dot I do sincerely
hope this video has been of some value to you in making the judgment call or
making a judgment call about this optic if you are interested in the optic or
you want to read those troubleshooting tips on amazon
I'll put all the major retailer links in the description below lastly as always a
thumbs up is very much appreciated and does help the channel grow so if you
feel it appropriate it's definitely appreciated thank you for watching and
we'll see you next time thank you
