We've lost the place of our promise in this world,

We started A.N.D. about 5 years ago.
Me as a volunteer.
So I'm the design partner.
We're a small fairtrade partnership and we started really to support disabled artisan.
And disabled artisan make all our bags, clutches, all the wood carving and that's all done by
a team of young men in wheelchairs with polio, mostly polio and some speech and hearing difficulties.
The bags are all made by various, mostly polio disabled or landmine disabled artisan.
The main fabric we use is our handweaves.
We have three or four weavers now that do different kinds of silk, tie dye or ikat or plain silks.
The weaving comes from farming families who do weaving as a supplementary income.
We don't have workshops, we don't have factories.
They're scattered all over three or four provinces and they work not in the house, under the
house where they have the big loom in the shadow of the house under the stilted house.
That's where all the weaving comes from.
We do a lot of clothes.
We have a full time team of lady and gentlemen sewers.
They are mostly village tailors who come in to Phnom Penh for a better job and a better wage.
All our staff can have free accommodation.
Shop staff and sewing staff.
So they have safe accommodation in central Phnom Penh and we do full health insurance,
maternity leave.
We want them to stay with us so hopefully that's kind of what we do.
We don't have photographs of disabled artisan.
Some shops do that and I've been asked why we don't have people.
You know, we're a fashion store to be honest.
And if people want the story we put a leaflet in with every purchase, the story's on there.
And they can talk to us you know.
Number one is they like the stuff, number two is the story.
To me.
Our customers come from everywhere, they can buy a Prada bag, they can buy a Chanel bag,
they can buy a GAP bag or whatever they want.
But they've got to come in and say, "Wow, that's quite a nice bag."
We're not doing sympathy buys here.
We're doing buys because we're a design led fair trade partnership.
So I don't have a great philosophy, I'm not very analytical about what I do at all.
I just see beautiful things and I want to make more beautiful things.
It makes sense to me, you know.
And along the way we have people who are charming to work with, fun, great sense of humour and
they're doing nice things.
There's not more you can really ask, really.
Today is a Buddha day.
Buddha days are very good because we get fruit and we do light the incense and everything.
Every shop has a little alter.
We're in a Buddhist country.
And then we get to eat the fruit afterwards.
So it's a win, win situation.
The Buddha gets a choice.
If he wants a banana he has to be quick I can tell you.
Nothing's wasted here.
Buddha's quite good to us actually.
Every time we open a new shop we have like a big blessing.
They're throwing water everywhere.
So we have monks come in and it's a lovely occasion.
And we're scattering lotus petals, it's all very romantic.
We have a very good relationship with the local temple just across the road.
I mean, not just across the road that's an apartment block.
We have a sort of contract, a loose contract with a monk to come and do the blessing and
make sure they do it, and make sure it's blessed so we sell things actually.
