and my sister Aleya played Bawang Merah.
So.. I think that's why it has such memories lah.
And that transcended into real life.

What do you think of the depiction of women in Malaysian film? Or the depiction of a celebrity?
I think in the past 5 years, things have changed.
It's this Kim Kardashian thing where the person is bigger than their craft.
Or the person doesn't even have a craft.
It's all about, 'me me me', 'I I I',
'Look at me', 'make money', 'I influence people to think a certain way'.
And that's a job. That, to me is scary.
Because I don't believe you need that particular handbag to be of importance in life.
I don't think you have to upload a billion pictures of your child,
who is not even 5 or 6 years old.
I don't think it's right to have a show where you put babies,
celebrity babies, and you vote for the cutest one.
But it is happening.
It's capitalism dude.
It's sad.
What do you think is the state of storytelling in Malaysia now?
It's quite sad.
This is my point of view.
Because of our identity...
A lot of people are very fixated with this money thing.
So they have to make blockbusters, they have to make it... They want to get rich.
They want action. They want crashes. They want pretty girls.
But some of the movies that are being made and being awarded
and making a lot of money, kind of deal with identity, as well.
But what is being depicted is... women getting raped, marrying your rapist.
That kind of stuff.
Sometimes what appears on TV is more despicable than what you see in the movies.
Punching the wife.
Raping the wife.
Yeah, that's all fine.
Then we ask the question, " Why is our society like this?"
Every day, prime time, in your house, brainwashing you.
Everyday. Wake up.
This is what they're doing to you.
I'll give you 5 more years, just you see what happens to Malay girls in Malaysia.
"Yes, dear. Anything you say, dear."
Just see what the Syariah court does.
I just did a short film yesterday about divorce.
156 divorce cases per day.
Wow.
You ask me why there are babies in garbage bins and being flushed down.
You ask me why, when you are infecting your citizens with things like this everyday.
But that's the thing,
we have dramas that teach us 'please fall in love' but no sex education.
And then of course, blame people like us cause we are urban, westernized,
English speaking, "it's your fault".
It's like, "okay..."
Yeah it's my fault.
My mom told me what to do and what not to do.
There was dialogue in the movie 'Sepet',
initially when I said it at 17, it went over my head and I didn't get it.
But when I think about it now, oh my God... it's so strong.
Orked says something like
"who cares if a person likes another person because of their race"
"It's when they hate them - that's the problem"
So simple.
Who are your heroes?
Thank God, I have been blessed with a lot of strong women in my life.
Both my grandmothers. My mom. Yasmin (Ahmad), of course.
My sisters. People closest to me.
Oprah. I love you, Oprah!
What traits do you like about these people?
These are people who lead by example.
They do their own thing and if you like it, that's good. If you don't, they don't care.
They don't force you to follow them.
It kind of sounds like a sense of self-confidence that you're attracted to.
Very much.
And a sense of self-assurance, as well.
I aspire to be like that lah.
Self-love, being comfortable in one's own skin.
Of course they care to a certain level, but not letting it affect them.
Love lah, an abundance of love. I don't know how to explain.
What do you think it takes to have these kind of qualities?
I think faith... in whatever it is.
You know... it doesn't have to be a God or anything.
But it's faith in one's self.
Faith in a higher power.
Faith in everything is going to be alright
and we are not here forever.
So I think faith is something that I need.
Faith in believing that I will catch or find this 'Berlian Sungai'.

it's also the faith in knowing that it is not the time.
