Hello dear viewers.
Here we goes with the fifth video of
"Bangladesh Military Industries" series.
In the last video we said
our next video will be about Khulna Shipyard Limited (KSY Ltd.).
This is commercial venture of the Ministry of Defence (MOD)
of Bangladesh, operated by the Bangladesh Navy.
In 1994, the formation of Khulna Shipyard Limited was started.
Then East Pakistan Industrial Development Corporation
established the KSY with the technical help of West Germany.
KSY has almost 70 acres area with modern shipbuilding facilities.
It is situated in the bank of Kazi Bacha, a branch of Rupsha River.
KSY was handed over to the Bangladesh Navy with a large sum of debt.
And then, in 2008 KSY paid all its debt and started to make profit continuously.
Now it is the largest tax payer in the Khulna division.
KSY builds naval ships, as well as cargo ships, container vessels,
firefighting boats, patrol boats, steel structures for industry
and other infrastructures.
Commercial cargo & container vessels
made by the KSY has been exported to the overseas clients.
Here we'll discuss only about the naval ships built by the
Khulna Shipyard Limited.
Already this shipyard built Padma-class patrol craft,
Durgam-class ASW large patrol crafts, naval floating cranes tugboats etc.
BNS Durgam ASW LPC building is a new milestone for the KSY, as it's the country's first.

KSY currently negotiating with China regarding the project.

Achievements of the KSY Ltd is the Achievement of Bangladesh.
Already Maldives showed their interests to buy naval patrol crafts
from KSY for their coast guard force.
Hope more overseas
clients will buy KSY built ships.
And thus, we hope,
Bangladesh will be a warships exporter nation soon.

How do you celebrate a Communist takeover?
By going on vacation and buying lots of souvenirs!
The Chinese military wants you to know how awesome it is.
And finally, the most expensive bowl in the world.
It's worth its weight in Golden Grahams.

Hi, welcome to China Uncensored, I'm your host Chris Chappell.
The Chinese Communist Party knows how to get on people's good side:
indoctrinate them from birth.
And also, give them time off work.
This week was Golden Week.
An eight-day national holiday
that kicks off with the anniversary of when the Chinese Communist Party
liberated the people of China...
from their money...
and their lives.
This week also includes the Mid-Autumn Festival,
a traditional Chinese holiday celebrating Chinese princess
Chang-e and her voyage to the moon.
Making it part of China's sacred territory since ancient times.
And Golden Week isn't just about taking time off work.
It's about travel.
700 million people,
half of China's population,
are hitting the road,
and spending about 90 billion dollars on it.
Did I mention half of all of China is travelling?
This is what that looks like.
From scenic spots,
to train stations.
Or just taking a selfie with that guy who killed 100 million people.
And then there's that tourist spot north of Shanghai
where folks can watch pigs dive into a river!
That's all it is.
Time to move on, folks.
And among the 700 million Chinese people on the move,
more than six million will be going overseas.
The top three tourist destinations are Thailand, Japan, and the US.
South Korea, however,
is no longer the hot tourist destination it use to be.
I know what you're thinking,
but it's not because the Korean 24K gold snail face masks
aren't as good as they used to be.
It's because the Chinese regime
is discouraging citizens from going there,
because they're super mad that the South Korean government
installed that US missile defense system.
There's been a 20% drop in Chinese tourists in the first half of the year.
But even during the holiday week,
some people were still hard at work.
Like this drug smuggler.
Police busted him carrying 99 grams of methamphetamine.
He was surprised after being arrested,
telling the police:
"I had thought that you all would be resting
because of the long holiday
and that I could take advantage of Golden Week to move some drugs."
How stupid can you be?
What, is this guy on meth or something?
And you know who else still had to work?
Apparently the people of Xinjiang.
Civil servants, government employees
and some teachers and students,
"had to cancel their holiday plans and work through October--
including weekends--
while others were ordered to attend ideology classes."
Yes, there's no better way to maintain peace
and order in an unstable region,
by forcing them to watch propaganda films over the holidays.
Then again, I guess I do watch Independence Day every Fourth of July.
And in a similar vein,
the Chinese Communist Party knows what people really want
to do on their Golden Week Holiday.
Watch a documentary on state-run TV
about how awesome the Chinese military is.
Granted, the PLA might not be able to fight off aliens.
But there's nothing like an eight-episode documentary
produced by the Political Work Department
of the Central Military Commission
to get me excited for my Golden Week vacation.
It's better than a movie!
At least, a movie produced by the American running dogs.
China only allows 34 foreign films a year
to be played inside China.
And those that do,
only get to keep 25% of their box office revenue.
Ideally.
But the Motion Picture Association of America
just audited ticket sales from China
and found they were coming up a little short.
"The audit found that the Chinese ticket sales from 2016
were underrepresented by about 9%,
amounting to roughly $40 million in lost revenue."
But despite getting stiffed by China at the Box Office,
Hollywood considers China a critical market.
Especially since in the US,
people seem to care less and less.
China is the second largest movie market in the world
and can turn a flop into a success.
Take Transformers: The Last Knight.
In the US, it only earned 45 million dollars on its opening weekend.
In China, 120 million.
But hey, even 45 million dollars in the US isn't bad.
You can do a lot with 45 million dollars.
Like buy a 900-year-old Chinese bowl.
And still have money left over
to buy a giant house in the suburbs.
Or a tiny condo in Manhattan.
This bowl comes from the Northern Song Dynasty.
But...I still think it was a bit overpriced.
I mean, you could have gotten this one
from Bloomingdale's for just $12.99.
And then had even more money left over
to buy a huge mansion in the 'burbs
with swimming pools, tennis courts, and a 12 car garage.
Or a medium size condo in Manhattan.
But supposedly what makes this Song Dynasty bowl so great
is the ice crackle style used to make it.
That's where cracks form during the cooling process.
I wish I had known about that in my high school ceramics class.
Instead of getting an F,
I could have been a millionaire.
900 years from now.

Why this awful sounding album is a masterpiece - Duration: 10:04.
This is Trout Mask Replica. On the album cover is Captain Beefheart, a fish on his
face and a top hat on his head. The image is surreal, it's grotesque, and it's the
perfect visual depiction of the music you're about to hear.
My smile stuck. I cannot go back to your frownland.
the 80 minutes of music on Trout Masks Replica by Captain Beefheart and his
magic band have been compared to rusty barbed wire, and the New York Times once
said that Captain Beefheart's voice makes Tom Waits sound like Julie Andrews.
But, here's the thing, 41 years after its release in 1969 this cacophonous double
album was inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording registry
right alongside Al Green's classic "Let's Stay Together" and the American standard
"Take Me out to the Ball Game". Not only that, a number of iconic musicians, visual
artists, and creative thinkers have named Trout Mask Replica a shining point of
inspiration for their work. How can an album that sounds like the musical
equivalent of barbed wire be recognized as such a significant piece of American
culture?
Let's start with Don Van Vliet known as Captain Beefheart. He grew up in
California on the edge of the Mojave Desert and by the age of 10 was an
incredible sculptor. Growing up he became captivated by the blues perfected by
musicians like Muddy Waters and Howlin wolf some 2,000 miles away in the
Mississippi Delta just as much he was entranced by the free jazz of Ornette
Coleman and John Coltrane by the late 1960s he had an album and a small-time
hit a cover of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy." For his next project he signed to
his former high school classmate, Frank Zappa's, label with the clear request for
unbridled creative freedom to do whatever the hell he wanted for his next
project. By 1969 Trout Mask Replica was created and those years were a glorious
mess for everyone involved in its making.
This is Samuel Andreyev. He's a composer who studied composition and music
analysis at the Paris Conservatory. A number of things, first of all it's an
album that I'm personally obsessed with. I think it's a phenomenal work of art.
it is mind-bendingly creative and honestly pretty difficult to listen to,
but its uniqueness can be discovered within its songs, especially Frownland.
Well the purpose of Frownland as an album opener is to just plunge you
headfirst into a maelstrom of just absolute strangeness.
Here's something interesting you can do as an experiment: compare it to a piece
like "You really got me" by the Kinks. Okay so the main guitar riff in that song da
da da dum da da da da that's two notes okay and that's what the song is built
out of. The most important thing is at the rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass, drums,
and vocals are all locked into one rhythm - they are playing in sync. So
contrast that with "Frownland" where in minute 40 seconds you have no fewer than
I think like 23 individual motifs - it's actually 21 but that's still a whole lot -
and these 23 motifs are all individually rather complex. Added to that is the fact
that they're all heard stacked on top of each other all the time. Not only that
the traditional roles of rock instrumentation found in songs like you
really got me we'e just completely thrown out the window. Just listen
closely to the first five seconds of the track.
You'll immediately notice that the rhythm is off-kilter. That's because the
rhythm guitar and the lead guitar are playing a five over seven polyrhythm.
That means one guitar is playing five beats per measure at the same time the
other is playing seven. Okay so try clapping five beats in one hand and the
same time you clap seven. Not only is a piece polyrhythmic, it's also
polytonal. Both guitars are playing in different keys throughout the piece
against each other and often they're changing keys. Typically the bass would
ground the harmony and the rhythm but here it's treated like a third guitar so
it lives in its own world as well. And, it's playing chords which just rarely
happens in rock music. And on top of that you have these insanely virtuosic drums
that have another function altogether. The drummer is trying to take elements
of what the guitar is doing and what the bass is doing and basically glue them
together so that the piece coheres. In the end you have a really condensed song
with multiple instruments constantly changing keys tempos and time signatures
and across the entire album this happens. Trout Mask Replica is a masterpiece
because it does something that is almost impossible hard to do, it comes from a
very rare place of art making. So art scholars talk about the sentimental
versus the naive. On one end of the spectrum you have sentimental art - art
that comes from a place of a lot of formal training. At the other end you
have naive art - art that is almost childlike. It exists purely because the
compulsion to make it was so strong. The great thing about Trout Mask Replica is
that they literally splice together naive impulses into a structure. So it
sounds totally improvised it sounds like they're making it up on the spot but
they rehearsed these pieces, that's really hard. So how do you teach these
musicians to play your music? A kind whip. A kinda quip. A kind well
hell you know tape with the piano. A tape. Captain Beefheart was the singular
creative force behind Trout Mask Replica and he composed every song on the piano
without knowing how to play it. He pretty much didn't play any
instrument, but he had his magic band which consisted of remarkable young
musicians like Zoot Horn Rollo, Drumbo, Antennae Jimmy Semmens, and Rockette Mornton.
Their job? translate Captain Beefheart's avant-garde approach into a
blues and free jazz inspired rock album based on the music he created on an
instrument he really didn't know how to play. Let that sink in for a second. A
piano has 88 keys and with two hands you can easily play the lowest and the
highest keys at the same time if you wanted to.
Don Van Vliet expected those same sounds from his two guitarist and a bassist
who's instrument ranges were just vastly different. Here's Bill Harkleroad, you
might remember him as Zoot Horn Rollo. Oh I think it was just that there were
parts and then well why can't you play those notes what's wrong with you? Why
can't you play that note that's not on the guitar or seven notes at a time?
So there was no choice but to do it. He used to say you think you got a hard job man
I got a sing to that shit. And that is John French, the drummer. He had the
arduous task of helping other members of the band learn everything that came out
Don's piano. Sometimes I wondered I wondered if he knew that it was in a
different time signature you know, but he didn't know what time signature was.
They painstakingly rehearsed over the course of a year until they were able to
record the entire double album all the way through in just a few hours.
When I first came across Trout Mask Replica, I was instantly captivated by
the sound of those three words strung together. Every song title made me laugh
and so I listened to it and it instantly expanded my understanding of what music
could be. For some people it can be offensive it sounds like they're
deliberately flaunting the rules I don't think I don't view it that way I don't
think anyone's deliberately flaunting the rules I think I don't think it's
contrarian for the sake of being contrarian I think rather what it is is
its artistic for the sake of being original. Hey all thanks for watching

WHETHER HE WAS PREACHING THE ABSOLUTE ANTITHESIS
TO IT.
WHAT LUTHER REDISCOVERED WAS SIMPLY "GRACE."
AND IF ANYONE HAS THE IDEA THAT GRACE IS SOMETHING
THAT YOU EARN BY YOUR GOOD LIFE OR YOUR GOOD WORKS,
YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT GRACE IS.
GRACE IS THAT WHICH IS TOTALLY UNEARNED, TOTALLY
UNDESERVED, TOTALLY UNWORKED FOR.
IT IS FREE; IT IS GIVEN TO PEOPLE WHO DESERVE THE
VERY OPPOSITE.
IT IS HEAVEN GIVEN TO PEOPLE THAT OUGHT TO
GO TO HELL.
IT IS THE ASTOUNDING, AMAZING GRACE OF GOD
WHICH IS UNLIKE ANYTHING IN THIS WORLD.
AND WE SIMPLY TURN IT AROUND AND MAKE IT INTO
SOME KIND OF MERIT OF OUR OWN.
BUT CHRIST, IN THE EFFULGENCE OF HIS GLORY
AND THE WONDER OF HIS GRACE, DIED ON THE CROSS
AND ROSE FROM THE DEAD AND OFFERS SALVATION FREELY,
GRATUITOUSLY, GRACIOUSLY TO EVERY UNDESERVING,
UNWORTHY SINNER WHO WILL BELIEVE IN HIS CROSS.
UNDESERVED, UNEARNED- THAT IS GRACE.
AND IN 1483 IN THE HUMBLE HOME OF A WOODCUTTER, A
LITTLE CHILD WAS BORN NAMED MARTIN LUTHER.
MARTIN LUTHER NEVER SET OUT TO DO ANYTHING GREAT.
HIS ONLY DESIRE WAS THE SALVATION OF HIS OWN SOUL.
YET, AS THE GREAT WRITER CARLYLE SAID, LUTHER WAS
GREAT NOT IN THE SENSE OF SOMEBODY WHO SET OUT TO
ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING, BUT GREAT AS A MOUNTAIN IS
GREAT- JUST BY STANDING THERE.
AND THAT MOUNTAIN CHANGED THE COURSE OF HISTORY, AS
GOD IN HIS MARVELOUS PROVIDENCE REVEALED TO HIM
SOMETHING THAT WAS NOT GOING TO REMAIN WITH HIM
FOR LONG.
AND SO LUTHER GREW UP, WENT TO COLLEGE.
HE WAS GOING OFF TO LAW SCHOOL TO STUDY LAW, AND
HE AND A FRIEND WERE WALKING BACK TO THE
UNIVERSITY AND THE SKY BECAME GLOWERING AND IT
DARKENED.
THE CLOUDS GATHERED AND THE RAIN BEGAN TO DESCEND.
THEY WEREN'T PARTICULARLY INTERESTED, HARDY FOLKS
THOSE, UNTIL SUDDENLY THERE WAS A FLASH OF
BRIGHTNESS THAT ALMOST BLINDED LUTHER, AND A
THUNDEROUS SOUND AS LIGHTNING STRUCK HIS
FRIEND RIGHT AT HIS SIDE, KILLING HIM INSTANTLY,
THROWING LUTHER ONTO HIS FACE IN THE MUD, FILLING
HIS HEART WITH TERROR.
HE WAS ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN ANOTHER BOLT WAS GOING TO
FALL AND HIT HIM, AND HE LIFTED UP HIS MUDDY FACE
AND HIS DIRTIED HAND TO HEAVEN AND SAID, "HELP,
ST. ANNA, AND I WILL ENTER A MONASTERY."
AND SO HE SET OUT TO DO HIS GOOD DEEDS TO EARN HIS
MERIT, TO GET ALL OF THE MERIT BADGES HE COULD TO
SAVE HIS SOUL.
AND WHEN HE ENTERED INTO THOSE DOORS OF THE
AUGUSTINIAN MONASTERY IN ERFURT, GERMANY, AND THOSE
GREAT DOORS CLANGED CLOSED BEHIND HIM, MARTIN LUTHER
WAS DEAD TO THE WORLD.
STAUPITZ, THE HEAD OF THE MONASTERY, ONE OF THOSE
FEW PEOPLE THAT REALLY HAD GRASPED THE GOSPEL IN THE
MIDST OF THOSE DARK AGES, SET HIM TO TEACHING THE
SCRIPTURES.
AND TOLD HIM TO TEACH THE BOOK OF ROMANS, FROM WHICH
I READ TODAY.
AND LUTHER CAME ACROSS THAT PASSAGE IN ROMANS
1:17, WHICH IS CALLED THE "BIRTH TEXT" OF
PROTESTANTISM.
IT IS CARVED INTO THIS PULPIT IN FRONT OF YOU:
"AS IT IS WRITTEN, THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH"
ROMANS 1:17.
AND LUTHER CAME ACROSS THAT VERSE AND HE COULD
NOT UNDERSTAND IT.
STAUPITZ DECIDED ABOUT THIS TIME TO SEND HIM AS
AN EMISSARY TO ROME, HOPING THAT THAT MIGHT DO
SOME GOOD FOR HIS SOUL.
NOW, MARTIN LUTHER WAS THOROUGHLY CONVINCED THAT
THE CITY OF ROME WAS INHABITED BY ANGELS AND
SAINTS.
BUT HE WAS IN FOR A VERY DISAPPOINTING SHOCK.
WHEN HE GOT THERE HE RAN LIKE A CRAZED PILGRIM, HE
SAID, FROM ONE CHURCH TO ANOTHER, FROM ONE SHRINE
TO ANOTHER, FROM ONE RELIC TO ANOTHER, SAYING ALL OF
THE PRESCRIBED PRAYERS AND ADDING UP THE NUMBER OF
DAYS OF INDULGENCES THAT HE HAD EARNED, UNTIL AT
LAST HE CAME TO THE SCALA SANCTA.
THOSE WERE THE ACTUAL STAIRS UPON WHICH CHRIST
HAD STOOD 1,500 YEARS BEFORE THAT, THAT LED UP
TO PONTIUS PILATE'S PALACE WHERE HIS SEAT WAS, WHERE
HE PASSED JUDGMENT.
AND THEY HAD BEEN BROUGHT 300 YEARS AFTER THAT BY
THE MOTHER OF CONSTANTINE INTO THE CITY OF ROME.
AND NOW THE PILGRIMS WENT UP THESE STAIRS ON THEIR
KNEES PRAYING THE VARIOUS PRAYERS ON EACH STEP.
AND HE GOT PART OF THE WAY UP WHEN HE THOUGHT THAT HE
HEARD A VOICE.
IT WAS BUT A WHISPER, BUT IT SAID, "OH MARTIN, THE
JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH."
BUT HE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND THAT.
AND HE WENT UP SEVERAL MORE STEPS AND SAID THE
APPROPRIATE PRAYERS, AND THAT VOICE, WHICH WAS BUT
PIANISSIMO, HE HEARD AGAIN- THIS TIME FORTE:
"THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH."
AND HE SAID MORE PRAYERS AND WENT UP SEVERAL MORE
STEPS, AND THEN THE VOICE CAME AGAIN- THIS TIME IT
WAS THUNDERING, AS IF IT FILLED THE ENTIRE
CATHEDRAL.
THIS TIME IT WAS FORTISSIMO: THE JUST SHALL
LIVE BY FAITH!
SUDDENLY, LUTHER LEAPED TO HIS FEET.
HE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND THAT EVERYBODY IN THE
PLACE DID NOT HEAR THIS VOICE.
HE LOOKED AROUND AND IT SEEMED THAT SCALES HAD
FALLEN FROM HIS EYES, AND SUDDENLY HE UNDERSTOOD
THAT WE ARE JUSTIFIED BY FAITH.
IN FACT, THE GREEK TEXT ACTUALLY SAYS:
THOSE JUSTIFIED BY FAITH SHALL LIVE.
AND CONSEQUENTLY, THOSE WHO SEEK TO BE JUSTIFIED
IN ANY OTHER WAY SHALL NOT LIVE.
AND HE RAN DOWN THE STAIRS AND OUT OF THE CITY AND
BACK TO WITTENBERG, AND HE BEGAN TO PREACH THE GLAD
TIDINGS OF THE GOSPEL OF THE FREE GRACE OF GOD.
AND THE GOSPEL CONTINUED TO GROW THERE IN
WITTENBERG UNTIL, AT LENGTH, A MAN BY THE NAME
OF TETZEL CAME HAWKING INDULGENCES.
INDULGENCES WERE SOMETHING THAT IN THAT DAY THEY
BOUGHT TO PAY TO GET LOVED ONES OUT OF PURGATORY.
AND LUTHER WAS UPSET BY THIS.
HE STUMBLED OVER A MAN LYING IN THE GUTTER AS HE
WAS GOING HOME, AND THE MAN HAD A PIECE OF PAPER
THAT WAS SIGNED BY THE POPE THAT SAID THAT ALL OF
HIS SINS HAD BEEN FORGIVEN WHEN HE PURCHASED THIS.
AS TETZEL SAID, "WHEN THE COIN FALLS INTO THE
BUCKET, THE SOUL RISES UP OUT OF PURGATORY."
AND LUTHER, KNOWING THAT THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS
THIS IN THE BIBLE, SAT DOWN AND WROTE 95 THESES,
STATEMENTS WHY THIS WAS CONTRARY TO THE TEACHING
OF THE BIBLE.
AND ON OCTOBER 31ST, 1517, HE WALKED ABOUT A MILE
FROM HIS HOME TO THE CASTLE CHURCH IN
WITTENBERG AND NAILED THOSE THESES TO THE DOOR.
THEY WERE WRITTEN IN LATIN.
THE PURPOSE FOR THEM WAS TO HAVE A DEBATE BETWEEN
OTHER SCHOLARS AND THEOLOGIANS ABOUT THAT.
BUT PRINTING HAD ONLY RECENTLY BEEN DISCOVERED.
THE THESES WERE TRANSLATED INTO LATIN AND THEN INTO
GERMAN AND THEN OTHER LANGUAGES, AND SOON THEY
SPREAD ALL OVER EUROPE, AND THE WHOLE CONTINENT
WAS ABLAZE WITH THIS.
ECK, DR. ECK, THE GREATEST DEBATER IN EUROPE,
CHALLENGED HIM TO DEBATE.
LUTHER WAS BUT A HUMBLE MONK, BUT HE ACCEPTED IT.
AND BASED UPON THE SCRIPTURES, PEOPLE WERE
ASTONISHED TO FIND THAT HE HAD BACKED ECK RIGHT UP
AGAINST THE WALL.
SO NOW IT WAS DEMANDED THAT HE COME TO THE DIET
OF WORMS.
I REMEMBER A STUDENT IN SCHOOL SAID THAT LUTHER
WENT TO A COUNCIL WHERE ALL THEY ATE WAS WORMS.
NO, THE DIET OF WORMS, AS IT IS PRONOUNCED, IS NOT A
DIET OF WORMS; IT WAS A GREAT CONVENTION OF BOTH
THE AUTHORITIES IN STATE AND CHURCH THAT MET TO
CONSIDER THIS NOW VERY CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE OF
WHAT WAS THE GOSPEL.
AND LUTHER WAS TOLD NOT TO GO.
"REMEMBER JOHN HUS," HE WAS WARNED.
A HUNDRED YEARS BEFORE THAT JOHN HUS, WHO WAS A
PROFESSOR IN BOHEMIA WHO HAD MADE THE SAME
DISCOVERY, WAS INVITED TO COME TO THE COUNCIL OF
CONSTANCE.
HE WAS GIVEN SAFE CONDUCT THERE AND BACK, BUT WHEN
THEY GOT THERE THEY DECLARED HIM TO BE A
HERETIC, CANCELED HIS SAFE CONDUCT, SAID THERE WOULD
BE NO DEBATE, AND BURNED HIM AT THE STAKE.
"REMEMBER JOHN HUS," THEY SAID OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
"DON'T GO TO WORMS."
LUTHER SAID, "THOUGH THE DEVILS BE AS THICK AS THE
TILES ON THE ROOF, I GO TO WORMS."
HE WAS CONVINCED THAT THEY WOULD ALLOW A DEBATE.
AND SO, IN A LARGE WAGON PULLED BY A COUPLE OF OXEN
HE SLOWLY WOUND HIS WAY ACROSS THE COUNTRYSIDE
OF GERMANY TO THE CITY OF WORMS.
AND TO HIS AMAZEMENT THERE WERE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF
PEOPLE GATHERED THERE.
HE WENT INTO THIS GIGANTIC HALL, LARGER THAN THIS,
WHERE THERE WERE 5,000 PEOPLE INSIDE, AND THERE
AT THE HEAD, SEATED UPON A GREAT THRONE CHAIR, WAS
THE NEWLY CROWNED AND ELECTED EMPEROR OF THE
HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE, THE SPANIARD, CHARLES V-
JUST A VERY, VERY YOUNG MAN HIMSELF.
AND BESIDE HIM WERE THE ELECTORS FROM THE VATICAN;
ALEXANDER, AND ECK.
IN ADDITION THERE WERE ARCHBISHOPS AND BISHOPS;
AND THERE WERE DUKES AND COUNTS AND PRINCES; THE
FIVE ELECTORS OF THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE, INCLUDING
FREDERICK THE WISE, WHO WAS LUTHER'S ELECTOR, WERE
ALL THERE.
THIS WAS AN ISSUE OF GREAT IMPORTANCE.
AND OUT IN FRONT OF THE THRONE CHAIR WERE SEVERAL
LONG TABLES COVERED WITH BOOKS, AND HE WAS TOLD,
WHEN HE WAS BROUGHT OUT INTO THE ROOM, CLOTHED IN
THE HUMBLE GARMENTS OF A MONK, THAT HE WAS NOT TO
SPEAK UNLESS HE WAS SPOKEN TO.
AND HE WAS ONLY TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS PLACED TO
HIM, AND HE WAS TO ANSWER THEM FIRST IN LATIN AND
THEN IN GERMAN.
AND ECK ASKED THE QUESTION: "ARE THESE YOUR BOOKS?"
HE WALKED UP ONE SIDE OF THE TABLE AND DOWN THE
OTHER AND SAID, IN LATIN AND GERMAN, "YES, THEY ARE."
HE ASKED HIM THE SECOND QUESTION, "WILL YOU RECANT?"
IT WAS AS IF A SPEAR PIERCED HIS HEART.
SUDDENLY HE SAW IN HIS MIND'S EYE THE FLAMES
CONSUMING THE FLESH OFF OF HUS.
HE COULD NOT BELIEVE THEY WERE DOING IT AGAIN.
IT WAS RECANT OR BURN, AND LUTHER WAS STUNNED.
HIS KNEES GREW WEAK; HE ALMOST COLLAPSED ON THE
FLOOR.
AND HE SAID, "SINCE THIS IS A MATTER OF SUCH GREAT
IMPORTANCE, THE ETERNAL SALVATION OF HUMAN SOULS,
I ASK FOR SOME TIME TO CONSIDER MY ANSWER."
THEY BOOED AND HISSED, LAUGHED, AND HE WAS GIVEN
TWENTY-FOUR HOURS.
THEY DIDN'T KNOW THAT HE SPENT THAT NIGHT ON HIS
KNEES PRAYING TO GOD FOR STRENGTH FOR WHAT HE KNEW
LAY AHEAD.
THE NEXT DAY HE WAS LED OUT AGAIN.
"WILL YOU RECANT?"
LUTHER SAID, "SINCE SOME OF THESE BOOKS DEAL WITH
THINGS SUCH AS THE LORD'S PRAYER AND OTHER THINGS
THAT WE ALL AGREE ON, HOW CAN I RECANT ON THESE
THINGS?"
AND ECK SAID, "I WANT A CLEAR ANSWER DEVOID OF
HORNS OR HOOFS.
WILL YOU OR WILL YOU NOT RECANT?"
AND HE SAID, "SINCE YOU DEMAND SUCH, I WILL GIVE
YOU AN ANSWER WITHOUT HORNS OR WITHOUT HOOFS.
SINCE MY CONSCIENCE IS BOUND BY THE WORD OF GOD,
UNLESS I AM REFUTED BY CLEAR TESTIMONY OR
ARGUMENTS FROM THE HOLY SCRIPTURE, AND SINCE IT IS
UNWISE TO GO AGAINST CONSCIENCE, SINCE IT IS
OBVIOUS THAT SYNODS AND POPES HAVE BOTH ERRED, I
CANNOT AND I WILL NOT RECANT ANYTHING."
THERE WAS A HUGE UPROAR FROM THE 5,000 PEOPLE THERE.
"HERETIC! BURN HIM. BURN HIM."
AND THEN LUTHER PRONOUNCED THOSE FINAL WORDS THAT
HAVE EVER ETCHED THEMSELVES INTO THE MINDS
OF MEN WHO LOVE LIBERTY.
HE SAID, AND HERE RELIGIOUS LIBERTY WAS BORN
FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER: "HERE I STAND.
I CANNOT DO OTHERWISE.
GOD HELP ME.
AMEN."
HE WAS CONDEMNED TO BE BURNED AT THE STAKE, GIVEN
20 DAYS TO CHANGE HIS MIND, AND HE MADE HIS WAY
SLOWLY BACK, AND THERE WAS THE THUNDER OF HORSE'S
HOOVES, AND A GREAT GROUP OF MEN CAME GALLOPING DOWN
BESIDE HIM.
HE THOUGHT THEY HAD CHANGED THEIR MIND AND
WERE GOING TO KILL HIM RIGHT THERE.
SUDDENLY HE WAS LIFTED OUT OF THE WAGON ONTO ONE OF
THE HORSES.
THESE WERE THE MEN OF FREDERICK THE WISE, WHO
TOOK HIM TO THE TEMPLE IN THE THURINGIAN FOREST, TO
THE FORTRESS RATHER, AND THERE IN THAT FORTRESS HE
WAS UNDER GUARD FOR ONE YEAR, DURING WHICH TIME HE
TRANSLATED THE WHOLE BIBLE FROM THE HEBREW AND THE
GREEK INTO GERMAN- A BOOK WHICH TOTALLY DETERMINED
THE GERMAN LANGUAGE FROM THAT TIME FORWARD.
AND THE REFORMATION SPREAD.
THE GOSPEL OF GRACE WAS HEARD AGAIN, AND PEOPLES
LIVES WERE CHANGED.
