In my studies of Third John I recently discovered that the combination of testifying and also
truth is something that is characteristic of the writings of John.
If you look in Third John chapter one and verse three it says, "For I rejoiced exceedingly
of brethren coming and testifying of your truth, just-as you are walking in truth."
And I recently did a word search for this word for testifying and also truth, and I
found that only John has these two words together in the same verse.
Whenever you look in other gospel writers, such as Matthew, Mark, or Luke, this combination
of these two words is shockingly absent.
But whenever you look in the Gospel According to John we see it multiple times.
In John chapter five and verses thirty-one and following, the idea of a testimony or
testifying is referred to over and over again.
"If I testify concerning myself, my testimony is not true.
It is another who is testifying concerning me, and I know that the testimony which he
is testifying concerning me is true."
And then it says in verse thirty-three, "You have sent people to John, and he has testified
to the truth."
And again in chapter fifteen and verse twenty-six, "But whenever the Helper has come, whom I
will be sending to you from the Father, who is the Spirit of the truth, who travels from
the Father, that one will be testifying concerning me;" Then at chapter eighteen and verse thirty-seven,
"Therefore Pilate said to him, Therefore are you not a king?
Jesus answered, You are saying that I am a king.
I have been born to this end and I have come into the world to this end, in order that
I might testify to the truth.
Everyone who is from the truth hears my voice."
Finally at First John chapter five and verse six, we find the words, "This is he who came
through water and blood- Jesus Christ; not only in the water, but in the water and in
the blood.
And it is the Spirit who is testifying, because the Spirit is the truth."
I found this combination of testifying and truth over and over again, to be something
that was, again, something surprising for me, specific to the writing of John, and I
simply wanted to share this finding with you.
