Waching daily Oct 7 2017

From sleeper hits like It Comes At Night to box-office record-breakers like It and Get

Out, 2017 has been a great year for horror.

But for every high-profile killer clown, there are a dozen low-key horror movies that slip

straight onto DVD or — more frequently these days — video on demand.

Here are the under-appreciated horror movies you may have missed in 2017.

The Devil's Candy

Mixing heavy metal and horror, The Devil's Candy follows a struggling artist, played

with an unsettling creepiness by Ethan Embry, who moves his family out to rural Texas.

When the previous owner of their new house starts making sinister nighttime visits, the

family's already turbulent lifestyle descends into terror.

The Devil's Candy made the rounds at horror festivals in 2015, but it wasn't until 2017

that the film got a more widespread release via video-on-demand services.

Written and directed by Sean Byrne, whose previous film was an equally unique horror

flick called The Loved Ones, The Devil's Candy plays with themes from old-school occult films

while confidently slipping into its own modern take on the genre.

"Just the gas?"

The Evil Within

It's impossible to talk about The Evil Within without mentioning writer-director Andrew

Getty, who spent more than a decade meticulously crafting this schizophrenic passion project

before passing away in 2015, two years before the finished film was released.

But he left us with a very well-made, highly visual horror movie that will surely leave

viewers with some very specific nightmares.

"Someone like me."

The Evil Within tells the story of a mentally handicapped man named Dennis, played by Frederick

Koehler, who lives with with his brother, played by Sean Patrick Flanery.

After Dennis's reflection starts telling him to kill people, things go downhill pretty

quickly — to put it mildly.

"Yeah.

Yeah, it's a good way of saying it I guess."

Berlin Syndrome

Stockholm Syndrome is a disturbing condition in which someone who's been kidnapped develops

a sense of affection for their kidnapper.

The film Berlin Syndrome plays with that idea by following an Australian tourist who has

a one-night stand with a man in Berlin, only to find herself locked in his apartment.

The struggle that follows is pure psychological horror that dives deep into the mindset of

survival and the subtleties of psychosis, all anchored by a phenomenal performance by

Australian actress Teresa Palmer and a bone-pounding musical score.

Sometimes touching, sometimes brutal, Berlin Syndrome is definitely a trip abroad that

you won't forget anytime soon.

The Blackcoat's Daughter

Writer/director Ox Perkins' slow-burn possession film The Blackcoat's Daughter was made in

2015, but didn't secure a release until 2017.

Starring American Horror Story's Emma Roberts and Dexter's James Remar, the film centers

on two girls who are left at their prep school after the rest of the kids go home for vacation.

It turns out that both girls are hiding a secret, and events start to spiral out of

their control in the worst possible way.

If you're looking for a gore-fest filled with jump scares, you're better off looking elsewhere.

But if you want to spend your night with an atmospheric horror film that bleeds tension,

queue this one up.

"It's fun to be scared sometimes."

A Dark Song

You couldn't ask for a more powerful directorial debut than A Dark Song, and Liam Gavin — who

pulled double duty as both writer and director on this smart, engaging portrayal of ritual

black magic — is definitely a director to look for in the future.

Gavin crafted a surreal, minimalist film that may be one of the most technically detailed

occult movies of the last decade, if not ever.

There aren't any jump scares, and very little blood, but the build-up over A Dark Song's

100-minute runtime is just as satisfying as the ultimate climax.

Dig Two Graves

Not your typical horror movie, Dig Two Graves is more of a hardboiled revenge tale.

The story centers on a young girl who makes a pact with a group of gypsy mountain men

to bring her brother back from the dead — if she's willing to pay the price.

This indie thriller premiered at the New Orleans Film Festival in October 2014, then quietly

sat in the shadows until it was released online in 2017, but it was certainly worth the wait.

Dig Two Graves blends revenge, thriller, fantasy, and horror themes into one twisted tale of

a girl who may have to make the ultimate sacrifice for her family.

"There are no cowards, there are no heroes, there is only the living and the dead."

Lake Bodom

While it may look like a run-of-the-mill scream-fest, Lake Bodom's twist is selling itself as a

teen slasher flick when it manages to be so much more.

If you've never heard of it, don't beat yourself up.

After a short festival run, this Finnish horror release slipped quietly onto Shudder, a video

on demand service specializing in horror movies, virtually ensuring that only a handful of

people outside of Finland would ever lay eyes on it.

But for horror purists, Lake Bodom is definitely worth tracking down.

The Void

Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski first teamed up to write and direct the 2011 horror

comedy Father's Day, a neo-grindhouse tribute to the ultra-violent "exploitation film" genre

that hit its peak the '70s.

Their 2017 follow up, The Void, uses the same genre-specific cues as that film, only this

time to pay tribute to cult '80s body horror.

The Void is messy, weird, and a ton of fun.

It focuses on a police officer, played by Aaron Poole, who finds himself trapped in

a hospital when mysterious, hooded figures surround the building.

But while staying inside seems safe, he soon finds that the greatest terror is living in

the bowels of the hospital itself.

"It's disgusting, like Carrie levels of blood, like, very gross."

House on Willow Street

Admittedly one of the weaker entries on this list, House on Willow Street may fall a bit

short of the mark in pacing, but the premise and visual design more than make up for its

flaws.

The film is about two crooks who kidnap a young woman in the hopes of getting a ransom

from her rich father.

Little do they know, their victim is possessed, and soon she begins to turn the tables on

her kidnappers.

House on Willow Street doesn't do much to defy genre conventions, but it serves very

well as a bloody fun horror romp for a lazy evening.

The Dark Tapes

At this point, we've had our fill of anthology films.

The fad arguably kicked off with 2012's V/H/S.

"It's not haunted, I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation…"

Since then, we've had The ABCs of Death, A Christmas Horror Story, Holidays, and Tales

of Halloween, to name a few.

So when an anthology film comes along that not only exceeds expectations, but shatters

them completely, it's worth a mention.

The Dark Tapes successfully ratchets up the terror while avoiding all the pitfalls that

have doomed so many other entries in this genre.

If you want to be grossed out by alien monsters and scared senseless by paranormal visitors,

The Dark Tapes is the perfect choice.

And while we're on the subject of anthologies, 2017's XX is another quality entry in this

genre — and unlike The Dark Tapes, that one's available on Netflix.

"Wow.

That was intense."

GALLON SMASHING IS FOR LOSERS - WORST TREND ON YOUTUBE - Duration: 17:17.

What's Up player it's normally Conner how gallon smashing you might remember

the obnoxious trend from 2013 when a couple of kids decide to one day let's

go to a grocery store and throw a couple of gallons of milk on the ground break

them open and see if we can get a quick little laugh the video of course went

viral and people all across the country started trying to replicate this sort of

fool prank even though the creators of the original video were charged with

seven counts of disorderly conduct and destruction of property one behind the

UK even famously broke his jaw trying to do one of the gallon smashing videos and

I mean yeah it was crazy watch this

watch me talk 2013 was a weird year for videos because these sort of low effort

videos the compilations of you know gallon smashing or other weird

challenges we're hot on the streets everyone's who do making these like

weird even humiliating videos without even you know second-guessing themselves

as to how kind of cringy they actually work my friends and I were no exception

we made all sorts of just weird videos on coning carting pretty much any sort

of prank that we saw on the Internet we were trying to do it ourselves but guys

it's it's been four years right so you would think there's no gallon smashing

new videos on the Internet you'd be wrong they're still out there

it's bad I'm gonna think about myself because I haven't really found any of

these YouTube creators call out something that needs to be called out

which is the fact that gallon smashing still exists in 2017 and it needs to be

stopped because at this point there are youtubers who are literally trying to

make grocery store employees lives a living hell

someone needs to help them

a staple of the cringy prank videos of 2013 the Ghostbusters theme song I still

have no idea why anyone decided that that was just gonna be the anthem of

these 2013 like weird awkward videos but it was and like one of every three one

of those videos you'll find on the Internet has the Ghostbusters theme song

just stuck on top of it so these clips are so bad man like all of these

youtubers who want to do these gallon smash videos record like a million takes

and even though they have so many clips they're like well you know we filled out

when we got to put it in there even though even though it just makes them

look so bad I mean look at it's like some of these clips of gallons of milk

or whatever they're smashing don't even get smashed

just get a little dent in them I mean this guy right here's times prove my

point man psych his friend calls him an idiot and he's like oh I mean we

recorded the clip so let's just throw it in there yeah we smashed the gun for

this weekend nah but in the video we've got this Nick Crompton looking dude just

like slinging orange juice in the air his friends like nah man that's not

enough we gotta turn this island to a complete flood I think I'm gonna say it

a lot this video and I'm sorry if I do but it's been four years man like it's

2017 enough for the gallon smashing these guys are so late to the trend I

think I might be convinced that these guys like just discovered gallon

smashing and they're like we gotta make a video on that man like that's a genius

idea and like I said some of these shots just make these guys look so bad getting

up in front of the camera pretending this slip just like moaning on the

ground and you get so bad to the point where one kid is like no I'm not going

to smash my jug cuz that's just like overkill at this point in the original

Gallants matching videos is one of the big trends was to slip in front of

people watching you so that they're like oh my gosh this kids slipping let me

help them or whatever I'm just funny because the kid keeps

falling and can't get up the problem is these kids are these these like videos

today don't understand that no one's behind it you like no one is watching

you slip so there is no point to you doing that it's not it does it defeats

the whole purpose of the video being fun at the end of the day dog you just look

like an idiot this next one might be the cringe is man like this just like walks

up to a couple girls like what's up just like throws a couple of gallons of

orange juice in the air turns it like the island to a river like he looks at

the camera like like watch those chicks are gonna call me later man trust me not

if your Mama's gonna be calling you over the grocery store intercom like Jimmy I

told you an hour ago we need to go home now you have homework to do if you want

play xbox tonight if it was 2013 these kids falling on the aisle over the floor

would probably get some attention from the adults but you know every one of

this one is seen gallon smashing these kids are so late to the trend like look

at this dude this guy doesn't even care the kids are fine he's he's seen the

videos before his kids showed him the video and he's like dude are you guys

really such big losers you've never seen gallon smashing before and here's like

watch ever and this guy's gonna lose his mind when I pretend to slip now dude

he's got face this guy doesn't care at all there's no middle ground B schools

now let's throw the gallon on the ground so softly it just like leaves a little

dent or they're just flooding the entire aisle like trying to evacuate the entire

store with like eight bottles that are just smash it's just an aside but I

never understood why these kids who want to look so cool like never even put in

the effort to editing their videos like watch out this is the actual outro to

one of their videos

like what is that man like it's a clip of a guy's butt and then it's a creepy

piano song outro what is that do you buy it for like five bucks and like what we

spent the money we can't take it out now the video supposed to be fun but you

know not having that like one ounce of effort just makes it have such a weird

vibe that no one's gonna watch it I feel like all of a sudden some kids still

like Tebow on me I have no idea what to do like we're in the past right now I'm

convinced it's 2013 we're done with the first video what's more on the next one

we know we going up like every night up on the hills in the oh every wannabe

prankster has these just ridiculous channel intros but I'm pretty sure they

spent like you know ten bucks on it they all have like the loud music in like the

3d graphic it's like they're trying to be like the next box office hit I think

h3h3 productions put it really well on one of his old videos on fatality so I'm

just gonna show you a little clip here that kind of explains it's a parody of

you know what these intros are

hey buddy wasn't a crazy stupid crack today we're going to be playing here yay

dude that's my clip is still gold alright so what's going on guys you're

more calmer than make it to today we're doing a gallon splashing video at

Walmart there's just like no effort in these videos it makes no sense like this

guy is in a Starbucks with tons of background noise can't even get the word

right it's going smashing not gone splashing dog like wow where have you

been so they'll get a game bro you're trash oh you're smiling for the camera

like let's go guys then just throw a couple of wires in the air Gallants

and whatever right like it's not that bad it's not funny it's kind of just

there but his reaction his commentary on the video is just so out of nowhere I

don't understand it here is okay I know it sounds like I'm gonna Pringles can

right now but I'm trying to figure out what his dude grab him for in this

situation so this guy's pretty I mean this is great that I'm giving this guy

credit but he provides more commentary on his video than anyone else who's

making these videos in 2017 and that's when he came up with and if you think

that's that they can get worse trust me I don't you live in a bathroom right now

so I'm gonna wait as I clean it up and then I'm gonna do it again and then I'm

probably gonna head to another store screw this guy man I mean just clean up

your mess to clean up your mess it's really not that hard it's water but he's

like not like I'm gonna film these guys while they're like cleaning up the spill

that I made what are you doing dude and then he says I'm gonna do it again when

they finish like nah dude homie you're a loser and it's weird man all these

pranksters talk about their videos like it's some sort of life or death

like live situation like people are just watching them as they're doing it like

hey guys I'll be back in three minutes after I do this crazy prank like dude

yet we can see that you're still here because the video continues oh I always

just found that the concepts really just weird get some friends man I mean this

video is it's just weird like it's so low effort he doesn't even have the

water ball hitting the ground in his one frame just put some energy into your

video oh yeah he's playing this like gangsta music as if it's some like

ghetto move to go into an Albertsons and throw some water on the ground record

people's reactions I would definitely make a part to a

gallon splashing so leave like if you guys want to see that

please don't another one do you want to see the most boring gallon smashing

prank of 2017 I think it probably not but you know I already did the work so

here it is

like what is that dude oh yeah and then there's this gem this is why I put in

the video all right nothing these guys who don't have any Prisma here's one of

my favorite prank crews on YouTube what's up guys back here doing your

dares parkour going down right now we got eight hundred comments already

chunky has a whole bunch of comments too we're out here we got chunky on dress

Conor and then we got Taz hey what's up guys you've got Dylan

spicy we've got salad dressing over here and yeah there's Joe over there

there's workers everywhere - I feel like when we walk into any Walmart we go - I

feel like they just know us already these guys are smart man they're so on

top of these Walmart people figuring out who they are when they come into the

store yeah maybe if you're coming with a giant camera and like a million kids

following you you're probably gonna be doing something it also doesn't help

when you're like screaming at the top of your lungs with in like seconds of

entering the store which is why this guy shows up within one minute Mike don't

think like I'm like doing a good deed for everybody at Walmart you know he

might break half ass up in the store but he puts it back like a good boy where it

belongs okay he's a good guy guys one of the

Bears was to climb to the top of the bike rack so hopefully we can get one of

these kids to do it if not I guess mine are there to do but these kids know us

so see what they want to be not you that's some next-level stuff right there

man pulling off your pranks on your viewers and being like oh well this is

our payment to you it's like you being in our video that is like I'm gonna do

that one day of course we got a whole bunch of dares to go gallon smashing so

this kids about to get it I think we're gonna do two gallons smash them together

it'll be way more funny and way more savage savage

right there screaming for us we gotta go

just clean up your mess man just clean it up like honestly I probably wouldn't

have that big of a problem with gallon smashing pranks if kids just like did it

in the corner of the store and then clean it up themselves cleaning up

spills is the worst part of a grocery store employees job which is terrible

because we're here the grocery store RT is the worst job on earth these pranks

judgement you don't even know you don't even know in this particular video

there's a lot of clips that I left out but this one is just it it goes to show

kind of who these people are believe me I got the receipt we pay for it right

there we're gonna use it in more video so that's why we have to pay for it

they're telling their viewers look we bought this air horn because we're gonna

use it another video it was I mean it wasn't we wouldn't have bought this if

you were just gonna do it once okay but we're doing it multiple times

okay guys they paid for it like they might be blasting this into the store

and a comma in three seconds okay they bought that airhorn so just give them a

break here's one type of clip I always loved seeing these videos cuz there's

just no reason for it to be there but the kids are like well we record it so

we're just gonna put it in this is the guy that's like hyping up his own prank

like you guys ready and he's like oh yeah this is gonna be so lit dude this

is it's gonna be crazy watch watch you'll see you ready for this challenge

it's very good now

guys isn't working right there there's everything just oh by the way not a good

look for me to share name with this guy Kahn is just gonna rip the airhorn

inside the story and get everybody's attention so that'll end it off let's

get it no yeah probably should've picked a different video which is actually

possible because in 2017 like I've said a million times people are still making

gallon smashing videos like what is this man here's the last one

and it's kind of the most important one I wanted to show you look the first two

videos I showed you both had under 100,000 views okay kind of harmless but

the last video you saw had 650 thousand views and this one was made by a guy who

now has a million subscribers moved to Los Angeles and drives a nice m7 this

guy's example number one of how you can still make terrible content in 2017 and

somehow turn that into a profitable YouTube career it's ridiculous every

video we start in the bathroom just kind of like get rid of this the uses and

release the savage juice you know we have this guy is the worst

I mean sigh but his friends peeing dog suits channel is mega cringe

what is that yeah Savage roaming a boat on the floor of the store savage man

I'll give these guys credit this is probably the most intense gal smashing

video of this year but again it's 2017 why are we still seeing these videos why

man oh yeah the last dare this is what people wanted

us to do yeah you go bro Oh chill you're right

yeah these good you gotta hit subscribe for that man do you see that video that

was sick dude subscribe for more content like this I

mean there's not much else to say gone smashing sucks and if you liked it yet

trash I'm gonna let one of these pranksters record my outro for you but

thank you so much for watching if you enjoyed it leave a like if you want to

see more similar content give that trifa to subscribe whatever I don't know but

it's my first youtube video I'll be making more videos starting next week

there will promise you there'll be a video on the channel next week

you know what I'll do this too if this video gets a million likes or where I

have the next video so with that I'll see you next week

that's guy ending off

the tale of two suggests we go we go
