South Korea being driven into difficult situation by GM Korea, U.S. trade policies: PM Lee Nak-yon - Duration: 0:57.

Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon says South Korea is being put in a tough spot... by General
Motors' decision to shut down one of its local assembly plants.
Here's the Prime Minister this morning.
"GM Korea decided to shut down its Gunsan plant, and the Trump administration is putting
together measures restricting steel imports.
Korea is being driven into a difficult situation."
GM said last Tuesday that it would close its plant in the southwestern port city of Gunsan
by the end of May, due to lower demand for its vehicles.
The move is expected to cost thousands of jobs.
Adding to that, the U.S. Commerce Department suggested slapping a 53-percent tariff on
steel imports from a dozen countries last week, including South Korea, in order to protect
the U.S. steel industry.
Prime Minister Lee asked related ministries to come up with measures to respond to that
risk.

It would appear that with the Winter Olympics, North Korea has backed off in its aggression
towards South Korea.
But according to the North's state media, when it comes to the U.S., the regime is "fully
ready for both dialogue and war," and is prepared to respond to any U.S. provocation with a
prompt counterstrike.
The Korean Central News Agency also took aim at the U.S. over what it said were moves to
stifle the thaw in inter-Korean ties.
On the annual joint military exercises by Seoul and Washington, postponed for the Olympics,
the North slammed the acting U.S. ambassador to South Korea for saying the drills will
be held in April.
The North's outburst comes a day after U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the
White House is willing to work with the North Korean leadership... and that Washington is
waiting to hear from Pyongyang that the regime is ready to talk.
That said,... Tillerson also stressed that the Trump administration will keep up its
campaign of maximum pressure on North Korea.

Q1 So the U.S. is planning to impose more heavy
tariffs, this time, on imports of Korean steel products.
The U.S. Department of Commerce has proposed the tariffs to the President, based on Section
232 of the Trade Expansion Act.
Could you tell us what
Section 232 stipulates?
Q2 This follows safeguard measures imposed on
Korean washing machines and solar panels.
How do you see the level of the U.S. government's protectionist measures?
Is it too much?
Q3 The commerce department has excluded some
of America's allies including Japan, Canada and Germany from such measures.
Why not exclude South Korea when Seoul has been a key ally to the U.S. for decades?
Q4 Based on the fact that Japan was excluded
from the list, some point out that the U.S. has a political motive behind slapping tariffs
on South Korean products, especially regarding President Moon Jae-in's softer North Korea
policy.
Your take?
Q5 Some also argue that the Trump administration
is not just targeting South Korea, but also China.
They point out that the import regulations on Korean products began after South Korea
made military agreements with China that go against Washington's interests.

KANE: Hey Jason... so, I'm still a little freaked out, but before I get to that, I should
start with the fact that I'm fine, Victor's fine, the bar is fine, we're all fine.
We're a bit shaken up, but other than that... we're fine.
We had a little situation downstairs.
Victor's Dad came here.
Apparently he saw our website open on the computer Victor used before he got kicked out or something.
He yelled a lot of homophobic bullshit at us, but didn't do anything more than that,
because when he started at it I began trying to get him to leave.
At first I tried the usual mundane methods, but he just kept getting angrier and louder,
so I tried to sort of... magically coax him to leave.
Tried to get him to calm down, and increase the likelihood of him leaving at the same time.
It was... tiring, actually.
I've never tried to use both types of magic at the same time like that before.
Apparently that's a pretty draining thing to do.
But it worked, and he left.
But it was still scary, to be honest.
Victor's upstairs in the living room having some tea, and I'm... well, I'm calling you.
Because when I get anxious these days I tend to think of you for comfort first.
I know I could go wake you up, but... there's no reason to, really.
The situation is dealt with, I'm just still feeling a little bit anxious about it.
So... hence the voicemail.
Anyway.
We'll probably talk about this in person before you even listen to this message, but it soothes
me to leave it.
I think I might go have some tea with Victor myself.

I won't let him think he can just walk in here and intimidate or even threaten us or our people.

Victor's pretty upset about it, but I told him we've got his back.

considering I'm the pacifistic one in this relationship, but... shit, I mean,
I think you did the right thing.
We can't let that sort of violent bigotry have any right to space in our bar, in our home.
Victor's doing pretty okay this morning, considering everything.
He's asked for some things to do to keep busy, so I gave him a few chores.
Once it gets to 3pm and QLife opens, I'm going to get him to call them so he can talk to
someone other than us about this stuff, too.
He needs as much support as he can possibly get during all this.
Also...
I know we only barely know what we're doing with this magic stuff, but
this stuff with Victor's Dad has gotten me thinking.
