We had bullying in primary school.
I was getting bullied. At that time, I got really hurt.
So they also accepted people that were different? - They accepted them.
Bullying has been a big issue in Japan recently and it's been featured a lot in the news
Today we are here at Bunka fashion college for their annual school festival
We are gonna ask Japanese people what bullying in Japan is actually like.
Let's go and Ask Japanese.
We had bullying in primary school.
What type of bullying was it?
We would not let that kid enter the classroom and such.
Or say "Don't come near me. You have some bacteria on you."
There was a lot of bullying.
How did those issues resolve?
They did not really resolve at all.
Our teacher would try to mention it in class.
What did you do personally?
I was just watching it. I didn't try to stop them.
Oh boy did we have bullying!
I was taller than the average so I got bullied for that.
Only me got treated differently and such.
I got bullied in school. That's because I have a foreign face.
And also, my skin is rather dark.
People would call me "Indian" and such.
In those days I got really hurt by it.
But thinking about it now, thanks to that bullying I have become a mentally stronger person
I am now mentally strong enough to celebrate my otherness.
I have become like this, because I was bullied. I try to think positively now.
Looking at other countries, Japan has a lot more bullying.
There is also the hierarchical system between juniors and superiors.
I am actually from France. In France we can speak freely with our seniors.
We don't worry about hirachy.
People don't become senior by age but by their mental experience.
So there is more bullying in Japan, I think.
He said he thinks there is a lot of bullying in Japan, what do you say?
At our fashion school there are many people who get tolerated for being different.
In Bunka you can find a lot of people who got bullied before

Compared to other countries, there seems to be more bullying in Japan.
Well, it's an island nation after all.
I think there is a lot.
Did you or your friends experience bullying?
I personally had none. None at all.
I don't understand it because I never saw it.
- Absolutely zero bullying? - zero.
In elementary, middle and highschool? - Not a bit.
Wow.
Were there efforts in place to avoid bullying at your school?
Like "let's not bully" and such.
We didn't need that because there was no bullying.
That sounds like the most peaceful school life ever.
Once a month we had to fill in a questionnaire if we were getting bullied.
We would circle yes or no.
Was there any bullying during your school life?
Well, I didn't see any.
You guys went to super happy schools.
There was no bullying at my school.
We were not interested in such a thing.
We were all already too mature, to grown up for bullying.
We would accept people for being different.
So even different students were tolerated. - Yes.
Did you hear about bullying from friends in other schools?
Oh yes there was a lot.
Many friends said there was a lot of bullying.
I heard bullying in Japan is different to abroad?
Japanese bullying is very sly and malicious.
Abroad, people seem to directly attack others.
Japan is more sly about it.
Everyone will group together shadily.
And all together they will totally ignore one single person.
So bystanders won't really SEE that bullying is going on.
But the person who is getting singled out will feel the burn of bullying.
In Japan there is no 1 on 1 bullying.
One person ignoring only one, that's unheard.
So all expel one. - Yes that's common.
If you were to see bullying, what would you do?
Well, what would I do?
I wish I could say "Please stop" but...
I hope I would be able to say it, but I doubt I could say it.
Since we are Japanese, we won't be able to speak out loud.
I don't think I could say "Stop it" and confront the bully.
I would maybe contact the victim. - Maybe send her a SNS message.
Maybe ask her "Are you ok"... man that's not enough.
We are too Japanese.
Why would you not be able to tell the bully to stop?
I would like to say something, but then I would become the next target.
Yeah I might get bullied instead.
But you would send a message to the victim afterwards?
I would do that. - Like "Cheer up.".
Maybe that's the only thing I can do.
Do you think there is a lot of bullying in Japan?
In my area there wasn't any at all. - None.
- We see it on the news. - Like bullying suicides.
If it was a close friend I would like to stop the bully.
If it was a third person, I would just watch it.
Why so?
It's a bit annoying.
I would find it a nuisance to take care of that.
If it was a third person, I would not get involved.
If there was someone who was getting bullied, would you help? Call the teacher?
What would you do? - I would help.
I would talk to the victim and ask them out for lunch.
That sounds good. What would you do?
I would get angry at the bully.
More like "Hey you, stop it."
You should team up.
You ask the victim out for lunch and
and you tell the bully off. Nice one.
Let's create a happier school life.

So bullying in Japan is a serious topic and it happens in
many schools. Because in Japan it's so important to be part of the group
getting picked out as one person, singled out, and bullied upon is
so hurtful. There has been lots of cases of kids withdrawing.
They won't go to school anymore, they will just lock themselves in their room
because the bullying has gone so bad.
Recently a big problem is, that it's not bullying in school but
cyber-bullying has become a huge issue.
There has been suicides by young people, very young people sometimes even
primary school kinds in Japan, because they have been bullied so much
cyber-bullied or by their classmates.
This is actually a very serious topic.
If you have problems with bullying, if you feel bullied please check out
helplines in your country and the most important is
Take care of your health.
Take care of your mental health.
And don't let it hurt you.
One of things many people have said, and that some of the
guys in this video have said is, it has made them stronger.
Don't let bullying destroy you.
Rather make it into something that makes you stronger later.
Learn from it, and don't let people get you down.
Very very important.
