Waching daily Apr 24 2018

Hey everyone, it's an extra special day today because I am out thrifting.

As a frugalista, I don't always love to shop but I'll

make an exception for a great thrift store. Are you ready for the secrets to

thrifting success? Let's do this!

Ok, first things first before you hit the

store make sure to add a few extra things to your purse. Measuring tape

socks, in case you want to try on shoes, charged phone for all your research and

be sure to know the sizes of everyone in your family because you never know what

you're gonna find

Too much?

Now don't rely solely on stuff that's in a certain

size section things get moved around all the time so make sure to scour through

the racks because you're probably gonna find things that are going to fit

Go to valuevillage.com and sign up for the Value Village Super Savers Club this is

going to get you exclusive invites to super sale deals and great coupons and

guess what it's free

FREE!

Yay or nay?

If you get lucky and find something that you think is vintage pull

out that charged cellphone and go visit the Label Resource that way you can look

up the label and find out what year it was manufactured, you may have scored a

real oldie but goodie

SCORE!

I love checking out the scarf selection because they're cheap and you can

repurpose them in so many different ways. Steven once taught us how to wrap a gift

with a scarf I love that technique and this one is perfect for that

If you find an electronic that you love be sure to test it at a plug inside

Value Village before you take it home make sure it works.

Oh we got a live one

The housewares section is always so fun because we never find stuff like this at

the big-box stores and it's like a free trip down memory lane

Straight out of my mom's kitchen

Final tip if it makes you smile just get it, if you don't someone

else will right?

Happy thrifting!

through these beautiful girls

Thanks for explaining

Good morning

Listen friends, today I am at the Incheon airport, that is to say Seoul airport

Originally I had planned to come to this place next week for the trip to Dubai,

because this year I also have to travel to Dubai for work.

However, today I am also here in this place to experience a very interesting and curious place.

I'm going to visit a capsule hotel that is located at this airport

and I'm going to check what it has and what the atmosphere of that hotel is like.

I'm already so excited thinking about knowing this place

Look, this airport has some very interesting things.

It is a magnetic levitation train station.

How interesting, right?

Let's see, how it works.

It's a map of the airport.

I think we can pass through here only paying with a credit card

I would also like to know what this train is like and how it works

but I do not have enough time, so I'll check it next week when I travel to Dubai

What Is A Paradox? - Duration: 14:32.

Vsauce! Kevin here. And you have a dilemma. I have two envelopes and you can only choose

one. There's door number one. And there's door number two. Uhh.. Oh.There's actually

three envelopes here. Uhh great. Now we no longer have a dilemma.

Here's why.

Di comes from the Greek for "twice" and lemma means "premise". So a di-lemma involves

two premises from which you have to choose.

Adding a third envelope means this choice isn't technically a dilemma -- but it does

setup a very famous paradox. Wait. Let's dissect the word paradox like we just did

with dilemma to find out exactly what a paradox is.

Okay, Para comes from the latin "distinct from" and dox comes from doxa, meaning "our

opinion."

"Paradox" translates literally as 'distinct from our opinion.' So there ya go. Now.

Distinct from our opinion? That didn't really help at all. I thought a paradox was like

an unsolvable brain teaser? So how do three envelopes setup a paradox?

What is a paradox?

In 1961, Logician and philosopher Willard Van Orman Quine outlined the three categories

of paradoxes and I have them each hidden inside these three envelopes. One represents the

kind of paradox that you're most familiar with. Those that defy logic like the impossible

waterfall from this video's intro. The other two are… what?

Well. Let's crack one of 'em open and find out.

Falsidical.

This is why Achilles can never catch a tortoise.

We'll use this bootleg Rambo to represent Achilles and a Ninja Turtle PEZ will be our

tortoise. If the tortoise gets a 100 meter head start, then Achilles starts running,

by the time he gets to the 100-meter mark, the tortoise will have moved another meter.

It takes Achilles some more time to get to that 101-meter mark and in that time, the

tortoise has moved forward even further.

Achilles will always be catching up to the place the tortoise was as the tortoise inches

forward. The gap gets smaller, but the tortoise is always slightly ahead. According to Greek

philosopher Zeno of Elea, who dreamed up this paradox 2,500 years ago, the fastest runner

in the world can never overtake a tortoise in a race because you can infinitely divide

the distance between them as the tortoise advances.

But that's ridiculous. We know it's not true. Even with a head start I could outrun

a tortoise. And I'm no Achilles. So how can this be a paradox?

Zeno knew Achilles could catch up to the tortoise in real life, but he couldn't prove it mathematically.

He thought there would be an infinite number of new points for the tortoise to reach that

Achilles had to reach… because he didn't know that an infinite series of numbers could

add up to a finite value -- no one knew that for another 2,000 years. What we now call

a convergent series. ½ + ¼ + ⅛ + 1/16 + 1/32 goes on forever, but it eventually

adds up to 1. And at that 1 is where, mathematically, Achilles finally reaches the tortoise.

We knew that Achilles could catch up to the tortoise, but it took inventing calculus for

us to prove why. Which is why this paradox that confounded great minds for thousands

of years is falsidical. Described by Quine like this:

"A falsidical paradox packs a surprise, but it is seen as a false alarm when we solve

the underlying fallacy."

Okay, that's one paradox envelope downand- two to go. And behind envelope number two

we have: Veridical.

For this, we need a game show.

Okay I'm gonna replace the two envelopes we've already opened with some prizes. How

about we put a million dollars in one of them and the globglogabgalab in the other. It's

a good enough prize as any. The third envelope still contains the term for the final type

of paradox. Which we'll get to later.

Alright, I'll shuffle these up. So you don't know which is which. Now you've got three

envelopes. X, Y and Z. Pick the correct one and you win the grand prize.

After you make your selection, let's say envelope X, the game show host reveals what's

inside one of the two remaining envelopes. It's the glob. Now there are only two envelopes

left: the one that you chose and the remaining mystery envelope. He gives you the option

to switch your envelope. Should you do it? Does it even matter? I mean, your odds of

winning at this point are clearly 50/50, right?

No.

You should always switch. And here's why. The odds of winning with your first chosen

envelope are 1 in 3. So you have a 33.33%  repeating chance of being right and a 66.66%

repeating chance of being wrong. When the game show host revealed the glob it didn't

suddenly improve your odds to 50/50. The proof is in the options. After first choosing an

envelope, the thing revealed by the host will never be the money because well that would

ruin the tension of the game show. So if your initial 1 out of 3 pick wasn't the money

and the money is Y, then the host will reveal Z. If you chose wrong and the money is Z,

then the host reveals Y. If you luckily chose the money the first time, then the host can

reveal either Z or Y. It doesn't matter. No matter what you're still stuck in that initial

33% chance that you chose right the very first time. But if you switch, regardless of the

prize revealed, you now leap into the 66% zone. You've doubled your chances of getting

the money.

To put it another way, when you're asked if you want to switch, you're actually being

given a dilemma: Do you want to keep your single envelope, or do you want both of the

other two? It just so happens that you already know what's inside one of them. But since

the one revealed will never contain the money, the chances that the other unopened envelope

has the money are twice as high as the first one that you chose.

The 'Monty Hall Problem' blew up after a 1990 Parade magazine columnist advocated

switching doors in this same scenario from the game show "Let's Make a Deal." When

she told readers they should always switch to improve their odds of winning, nearly 1,000

people with PhDs wrote in to tell her that she was wrong. She wasn't wrong. They were.

So the Monty Hall Paradox, like the Potato Paradox we recently covered, is an example

of one that is a Veridical Paradox -- one that initially seems wrong, but is proven

to be true.

Quine said: "A veridical paradox packs a surprise, but the surprise quickly dissipates

itself as we ponder the proof."

Okay. There are paradoxes that seem absurd but have a perfectly good explanation, and

ones that seem false and actually are false because of an underlying fallacy… even if

it takes a major advance in math to prove it. This last envelope contains the kind we

all think of when we all think of paradoxes.

Antinomy.

The grandfather paradox where you go back in time to kill your grandfather when he was

a child but that means your father was never born so you weren't born so how could you

go back in time to kill your grandfather? It's ridiculous. MinutePhysics proposed a

solution to this but these types of paradoxes are not true or false. Actually, they can't

be true and they can't be false. As Quine put it, they create a "crisis in thought."

I am lying.

If I'm lying when I say that, then I must actually be telling the truth. But how can

I be telling the truth if I'm lying? The Liar's Paradox is an example of Antinomy,

which literally means 'against laws' and highlights a serious logical incompatibility.

Quine said. Quine said this tape thing was a good idea in theory but in practice not

so much.

Quine said: "An antinomy packs a surprise that can be accommodated by nothing less than

a repudiation of part of our conceptual heritage."

Here's the thing. Antinomies are paradoxes to us ALL. Falsidical and veridical paradoxes

are only paradoxes to those who don't know the 'solution', but they still have value.

Every time we resolve a scenario that runs counter to our or someone else's initial expectations,

every time we learn the how and why and share that information.... we're refining and clarifying

knowledge. Which makes all three types of paradoxes excellent tools for reasoning.

Whether or not something is paradoxical to an individual depends on the accuracy of THEIR

expectations. Today, modern mathematics has given us the ability to show that Zeno's

paradoxes are falsidical. But they were pure antinomy, unresolved to EVERYONE, for millennia.

Quine himself said, "One man's antinomy is another man's falsidical paradox, give

or take a couple of thousand years."

Who knows which antinomies of today will be solved in the future? Right now we struggle

with the paradox of the Faint Young Sun: our current knowledge of stars says that billions

of years ago, our sun wasn't hot enough to keep the Earth from being a ball of ice.

But our geological evidence shows an ancient Earth with liquid oceans and budding life

when everything should've been frozen.

How could the Earth have liquid water without a sun hot enough to melt ice? It's antinomy

until we fully comprehend the situation. Maybe our current understanding of the sun isn't

perfect. Or maybe our knowledge of early Earth is missing some pieces.

A paradox is a problem where the solution is, or is made to seem, impossible. Sometimes

they're purposely designed for fun because our minds like puzzles. Sometimes we just

stumble on a gap between what we know and how we talk about what we know, and what is

actually true. When we solve an impossible antinomy, it becomes falsidical or veridical.

Someone who knows the answer can see what the problem was all along: we tricked ourselves...

by knowing too little or by asking the wrong question. In one way or another, all paradoxes

come from people.

By challenging us to find the flaw or fill the gap in our knowledge, paradoxes help us

define and push our intellectual boundaries. There's always more for us to know. Whether

we know it or not.

And as always - thanks for watching.

6 Things EVERY Guy NEEDS in His Grooming Routine | How to Be Better Looking | Mens Grooming - Duration: 6:55.

Now a lot of other YouTubers love to make videos where they talk about the "10 GROOMING

PRODUCTS YOU NEED TO BE USING" and then it turns out to be some obvious bullshit like

a blowdryer or a hairbrush, and it's just like REALLY?

You're fucking kidding me right?

What are you gonna recommend I have a fucking bathroom and running water as well?

Fuck off.

Today I'm gonna hook you up with 6 tips that aren't super obvious shit like that.

But before we jump into that, I got a quick bonus tip from our sponsor Dollar Shave Club,

the fucking kings of the bathroom.

Right now because they love your boy Zeus so much and they wanna support my channel,

they're doing a special for just 5 bucks on their Shit, Shower, and Shave set which

includes their premium weighty handled Executive razor and a box full of cartridges.

They also hook you up with trial sized versions of their body wash, shave butter, and butt

wipes to make sure you're looking, feeling, and smelling great.

And after your first box, they'll send you a box full of cartridges for just a few dollars

a month.

Shaving is an essential part of your grooming routine obviously, and the fact that Dollar

Shave Club has you covered for everything in your bathroom is why I personally love

them and am happy they're supporting your boy, the god.

So if you're ready to stop buying cheap supermarket razors that are made for the generic

guy, and you also wanna support my channel, go to Dollar Shave Club dot com slash based

zeus to get your set for just $5.

Now let's get down to business.

#1 You need a schedule.

If you're like most younger guys, you probably don't have a scheduled time in your day

where you take a look at yourself to see what your grooming needs are.

So consequently, you end up walking out of the house looking like the fucking Pedo Bear

because you forgot to shave or trim your facial hair, neckbeard, eyebrows, and so on and then

by the time you realized you had to it was too late and you had to rush to school or

work looking like a homeless man in an alley.

Scheduling a time once a day or twice a week to shave and groom your face makes your life

so much easier because once it's scheduled and built into your routine, there's no

way of you forgetting or putting it off.

Some people need to shave once a day, while other people only need to shave twice a week.

Just find a convenient time that works best for you.

I actually struggled with this myself for a while and just recently started budgeting

a set time in my day to tweeze my eyebrows, shave my balls, and trim my beard.

And it's actually worked a lot better this way because then I don't have to rush to

do it once I realize it and I avoid walking outside looking ridiculous.

#2 A Konjac sponge.

Konjac sponges are sponges made from Konjac plants in Asia and if you want your skin to

glow like those hollywood actors and famous instagrammers then I highly recommend getting

your hands on one of these as well.

The sponges are super soft and help remove the excess dirt and buildup that clogs your

pores.

They're perfect for exfoliating and removing blackheads that can get stuck pretty deep

in your skin.

You know what I'm talking about, those painful blackheads that you get in your nose area

that are impossible to get rid of… the konjac sponges are good for getting deep into your

skin and removing those fuckers.

It's also a really good option for guys who have oily skin and get backne, yeah acne

on your back, it's gross but more common than you think.

Summer is coming up so you wanna make sure you clear that up before it's time to get

shirtless on the beach and chug beer off girls boobs.

It's super affordable so if you don't have one, I'll have one linked below for

you Basedlympians as well.

#3 An eyebrow comb.

This is actually something I just discovered recently that I didn't know about for the

LONGEST time.

Guys are hairier than girls, and thus grow hair on their face, including their eyebrows.

Girls typically get their eyebrows done regularly but guys rarely give their eyebrows the attention

that they need.

You should be trimming your eyebrows in the areas where they are growing too long to avoid

them looking messy and like an unmowed lawn.

Just like your sidechick, you gotta make sure you go in and plow that shit regularly.

You don't wanna have eyebrow bangs.

Not only do you need to trim them every so often, you also should comb them to make sure

all the hairs are in place and make them look neater.

This is something you should be doing every day.

The eyebrow comb is also really good at separating each individual hair which makes trimming

them with scissors super easy.

The eyebrows are the only defining feature on your face that you can change without plastic

surgery, so take good fucking care of them.

I use an eyebrow comb and scissors pretty regularly and the beauty is that they only

cost like 5 bucks, I'll have the ones I got from Amazon linked below.

#4 Moroccan Oil.

Moroccan oil is fucking dope and it's perfect for you guys looking to get that added shine

and sleekness to your hair.

It's also a good option for guys who have curlier or wavy hair because it helps reduce

frizz and helps make your hair more manageable.

I recommend using it before putting actual product in your hair because it'll help

make it more a lot easier to tame and manage your hair when you go to put in wax or paste

or whatever you use.

A lot of guys also like to use it as a prestyler before blow drying your hair because it acts

as a heat protectant and helps lock the moroccan oil into your hair.

Now I'm not gonna lie to you, a lot of girls use this stuff too so if you're masculinity

is too fragile you probably won't want to use it.

But I wouldn't be recommending it to you if it didn't work wonders for my hair as

well.

#5 A hair hydrating mask.

This is something I discovered pretty recently that not many guys know about.

A hair mask is basically a really deep conditioner that you use every 5-7 days to really hydrate

your hair, get rid of frizz, and make your hair shinier and more manageable.

This is perfect for guys with longer hair who like to rock stuff like undercuts, pompadours,

or even longer combovers.

It's also good for guys who blow dry their hair a lot because frequent blow drying tends

to dry out your hair and a hydrating mask is a good way to hit the reset button on your

hair, to hydrate it and make it a lot softer.

Now you're probably like "bro c'mon, what are you gonna recommend next, a fucking

mud mask?"

But I highly recommend you try out a hair mask at least once if you rock a longer hairstyle

to see how awesome it is because it's been working really well for me.

#6 A hair cream.

Hair cream is exactly what it sounds like.

It's cream for your hair and a lot of guys like to use it to style their hair.

It typically has no hold and is good for adding texture to your hair and a bit of smoothness

and shine.

But the way I suggest you guys use it is by applying it to your hairline on the front

and on the sides of it.

This works well to to push back and tidy up any baby hairs or hairs that are hanging off

and looking sloppy to make sure hair is looking clean and well kept.

And like I said before you can also rub some throughout your hair for added texture and

shine if your haircut doesn't require too much styling and you want to add something

in to make it pop without having to do much work.

And that's it.

IN summary

Make a schedule Konjac sponge

Eyebrow comb Moroccan oil

A hair mask And a hair cream

I'll have links to all this stuff below and be sure to comment and let me know which

tip you liked the best.

And don't forget to check out our sponsor Dollar Shave Club for their Shit, Shower,

and Shave set that they're doing right now for just 5 bucks over at dollar shave club

dot com slash based zeus.

The Untold Truth Of Verne Troyer - Duration: 5:25.

Verne Troyer, most famous for starring as Mini-Me in the Austin Powers franchise, passed

away on April 21, 2018, at just 49 years old.

A statement on the actor's Facebook page read,

"It is with great sadness and incredibly heavy hearts to write that Verne passed away today.

Verne was an extremely caring individual.

He wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh.

Anybody in need, he would help to any extent possible.

Verne hoped he made a positive change with the platform he had and worked towards spreading

that message everyday."

No cause of death has been given as of the making of this video, but there's been an

outpouring of sympathy for the loss of the star, who was born with achondroplasia dwarfism

and stood 2 feet, 9 inches tall.

His Austin Powers co-star, Mike Myers, told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement,

"Verne was the consummate professional and a beacon of positivity for those of us who

had the honor of working with him.

It is a sad day, but I hope he is in a better place.

He will be greatly missed."

Though Troyer was often the life of every party and quick to make the world laugh, his

life was often difficult, and much darker than the funny man everyone thought they knew

from the screen.

He may have been depressed

After Troyer's passing, his team seemed to hint that he may have attempted to take his

own life, writing in a Facebook statement,

"Depression and thoughts of self-harm are very serious issues.

You never know what kind of battle someone is going through inside."

Just weeks before his passing, TMZ reported that police and EMTs rushed to Troyer's home

after a friend of the Surreal Life star had called 911, claiming,

"[Troyer was] extremely upset, drunk, and depressed."

He was hospitalized for "poisoning," and according to The Blast, following the incident he was

placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold.

Reps for the actor didn't comment on the nature of his hospitalization directly at the time,

but asked fans via Instagram to "keep Verne in your thoughts and prayers."

He suffered from addiction

In April, 2017, Troyer was hospitalized for alcohol addiction, after which he immediately

checked into rehab to battle his demons.

He told People,

"As you know, I've battled alcohol addiction in the past and while it's not always been

an easy fight, I'm willing to continue my fight day by day.

[...] I am voluntarily checking into a treatment center later this week to continue to get

the help that I need."

Sadly, it wasn't the first time Troyer had been to rehab for alcohol addiction, with

previous stints in 2002 and 2006.

And ex-wife Genevieve Gallen told News of the World in 2009 that Troyer was also a love

addict, something that directly led to the end of their marriage.

He had health problems

In March 2015, TMZ reported that Troyer suffered a seizure during a meet-and-greet with fans

at the Heart of Texas Comic Con.

Troyer had trouble breathing and was hospitalized, where he ran through "a battery of tests,"

but was given a clean bill of health shortly after and released.

That was just one of Troyer's many health issues.

Besides his struggles with addiction, Achondroplasia dwarfism comes with its own potential issues:

The National Institute of Health reports that those living with the condition may also suffer

from recurrent ear infections, apnea, curvature of the spine, back pain, and spinal stenosis.

In fact, Troyer revealed on Oprah: Where Are They Now that he almost died as an infant

because his Amish parents didn't have a way to get him to the hospital quickly.

"Luckily, you know, I had an aunt who already switched and she took me to the hospital in

her car."

Which brings us to...

He was raised Amish

Troyer's immediate family was Amish when he was growing up, but they left the church while

he was still a child.

Though he admits that their lifestyle, which shuns electricity and modern technology, wasn't

a good fit for him, he doesn't look down on it.

He explained to The Guardian,

"The best part of growing up Amish is that it's a very tight-knit community.

If you fall on hard times or something bad happens, your neighbors pitch in to support

you and get you back on your feet.

[…] Looking back, I wonder how I survived in the Amish community.

I can barely live without my phone and internet access now.

But when I go back I still get into that culture.

I can even drive a horse and buggy."

He had relationship issues

In 2008, Troyer's relationship with ex-girlfriend Ranae Shrider made headlines after Shrider

released a tape of the couple against Troyer's wishes.

According to TMZ, not only did Troyer sue Shrider for $20 million, he also accused her

of domestic abuse, alleging in court documents that she threw him to the floor and broke

into his home among other things.

Shrider denied the allegations, and just a year later, it was Troyer's turn to deny allegations

of abuse after another ex-girlfriend, Yvette Monet, alleged that the actor threatened her.

Her attempts to get a permanent restraining order against Troyer were denied after a judge

ruled that Troyer was not a threat to her.

He didn't take the M-word lightly

Verne Troyer had a fantastic sense of humor and often poked fun at himself and his short

stature first and foremost, but that didn't mean he accepted slurs about those lacking

in height.

When UFC fighter Jon Jones called fellow fighter Daniel Cormier a "mental m---et" ahead of

a scheduled match in April 2016, well, those were fightin' words.

Troyer told TMZ,

"It's not a proper term.

[The word is used by] people that just aren't very bright, and aren't conscious of other

people.

They're just naive and, I would say, stupid […] I think [he] shouldn't say it, but apologize,

yeah.

You just shouldn't say it.

Nobody should."

Months later, Troyer told Oprah: Where Are They Now that as a child, he punched out a

bully who called him the M-word, explaining,

"That's just derogatory slang — the proper thing to say is either little person or dwarf."

The National for Monday April 23, 2018 — Toronto Van Attack - Duration: 47:26.

(*)

(*)

>> Ian: I'M IAN HANOMANSING IN

TORONTO.

BEHIND ME IS THE SCENE OF A

HORRIFIC ATTACK.

THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE

ALONG YONGE STREET JUST AFTER

LUNCHTIME, FIRST RESPONDERS

TENDING TO PEOPLE ON THE

SIDEWALK WHERE A VAN JUMPED A

CURB AND MOWED PEOPLE DOWN ONE

AFTER ANOTHER.

A BEAUTIFUL SPRING DAY IN THE

CITY ENDING IN TRAGEDY.

TONIGHT WE'LL WALK YOU THROUGH

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT WHAT

HAPPENED.

>> Andrew: ALSO WHAT WE'RE

LEARNING ABOUT THE SUSPECT.

>> Rosemary: WHY OFFICIALS SAY

THERE ISN'T A LARGER NATIONAL

SECURITY THREAT.

>> Adrienne: AND HOW THOSE

VEHICLES

LIKE THAT VAN HAVE ALL TOO OFTEN

BEEN USED AS WEAPONS, INCLUDING

HERE IN LONDON.

THIS IS "THE NATIONAL."

(*)

>> Ian: 10 INNOCENT BYSTANDERS

KILLED AND 15 OTHERS INJURED.

THE MURDER WEAPON IS A RENTAL

VAN.

IT HAPPENED JUST HOURS AGO WHEN

THIS STREET BECAME THE SCENE OF

SUDDEN PANIC AND DEADLY

DESTRUCTION.

>> IT'S A HORRIFIC SCENE.

IT'S SOMETHING THAT I DON'T

THINK THAT ANYBODY CAN BE

PREPARED FOR.

>> Ian: ABOUT 1:30 p.m. A

WHITE VAN JUMPED THE CUB AND

PLOWED INTO A NUMBER OF

PEDESTRIANS BEFORE SPEEDING

AWAY.

FIRST RESPONDERS TREATED VICTIMS

ON THE BLOOD OF STAINED SIDEWALK

AND 10 PATIENTS WERE TAKEN TO

SUNNYBROOK HOSPITAL.

THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT UNDER

LOCKEDOWN AS A SAFETY PRECAUTION

BECAUSE NO ONE REALLY KNEW THE

NATURE OF THE ATTACK.

IT HAPPENED NEAR THE CORNER OF

YONGE AND FINCH IN THE CITY'S

NORTH END.

POLICE APPREHENDED THE WHITE VAN

SOUTH OF THE CRASH SITE AND

ARRESTED THE SOLE OCCUPANT IN A

DRAMATIC CONFRONTATION.

THE NAME OF THE ALLEGED DRIVER

IS ALEK MINASSIAN.

HE'S A 25-YEAR-OLD FROM RICHMOND

HILL, ONTARIO, NORTH OF TORONTO.

HIS LINKED IN PROFILE SAYS THAT

HE'S A STUDENT AT SENECA

COLLEGE.

THE GOVERNMENT SAYS THAT THE

SUSPECT IS NOT ASSOCIATED

WITH ANY THREAT TO NATIONAL

SECURITY.

AS WITNESSES TOOK IN THE

TERRIBLE CHAIN OF EVENTS THEIR

FACES WERE ETCHED WITH THE GRIEF

AND HORROR.

CBC NEWS HAS LEARNED A LOT MORE

ABOUT THE SUSPECT, MORE ON THAT

IN A MOMENT BUT, FIRST, IOANNA

ROUMELIOTIS TAKES US THROUGH

WHAT HAPPENED.

>> Reporter: THE HORROR OF THE

AFTERMATH IS IN THE DETAILS.

THE BODIES STILL LYING ON THE

PAVEMENT.

KENNETH WU SAW THE VAN STRIKE

THE WOMAN AND THEN LOCKED EYES

WITH THE MAN BEHIND THE WHEEL.

>> HE WAS LOOKING AT ME AND SAW

THAT OLD LADY AND TURNED LEFT

AND THEN HIT THE LADY ON THE

SIDEWALK AND STARTED DRIVING

DOWN.

AS SOON AS HE PASSED MY CAR HE

TURNED AROUND AND LOOKED AT ME

FACE-TO-FACE AND I SAW THAT HE

WAS A VERY ANGRY, SCARED YOUNG

GUY.

>>> Reporter: WU SAYS THAT THE

VAN BRAKED AND THEN DRIVING OFF

AGAIN, DRIVING ON THE SIDEWALK

FOR SEVERAL MORE BLOCKS --

HITTING ONE PEDESTRIAN AFTER

ANOTHER.

KASRA EBRAHIMI WATCHED WITH

HORROR.

>> I SAW IT WAS A WHITE VAN AND

AS I REMEMBER IT WAS EXACTLY ON

THE SIDE WAY AND IT WAS LIKE A

MOVIES, IT WOULD FLY AND THINGS

LIKE THAT.

IT WAS SUPER SCARY, YEAH.

>> Reporter: ONE PERSON RUSHED

TO HELP A WOMAN WHO TRIED TO

JUMP OUT OF THE WAY.

>> A LADY WAS COMING NORTH AND

COMING NORTH BESIDE A BUS AND

SHE SAW THE CAR COMING AND SHE

TRIED TO STAND OUTSIDE BUT SHE

WAS NOT LUCKY AND SHE GOT PINNED

INTO THE BUS SHELTER AND WITH

THE GRASS.

AND SHE WAS PUSHED BACKWARDS,

LYING DOWN WITH ALL OF THE GLASS

ON TOP OF HER, BROKEN GLASS ON

TOP OF HER WITH CUTS.

>> Reporter: THE TERROR

CONTINUED FOR SEVERAL MORE

BLOCKS.

WITNESSES SAW A BABY STROLLER

FLY INTO THE AIR AND SAW THE VAN

PLOW INTO A GROUP OF PEOPLE

BEFORE FINALLY STOPPING.

>> I SAW -- I DON'T KNOW HOW CAN

I SAY IT -- THE CAR -- THE CAR

SEAT WITH THE BABY GOING ALL

LIKE THAT.

I DON'T KNOW THE BABY --

HOPEFULLY -- YEAH, HOPEFULLY THE

BABY WAS FINE.

>> GET DOWN!

>> Reporter: AFTER A DRAMATIC

POLICE STANDOFF THE MAN WAS

ARRESTED AT THE SCENE.

>> THIS IS GOING TO BE A LONG

INVESTIGATION WITH MULTIPLE

WITNESSES AND A LOT OF

SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS.

>> Reporter: HOURS LATER

DOZENS OF OFFICERS AND THE

CORONER WERE STILL HERE

ASSESSING THE CARNAGE.

THE VICTIMS ARE STILL HERE TOO.

AND PEOPLE CONTINUE TO LINE THE

STREETS.

COLIN GERVAIS LIVES AROUND THE

CORNER.

>> I CAME OUT TO PAY MY RESPECTS

TO THOSE PEOPLE BECAUSE IT COULD

HAVE BEEN ME EASILY.

IF I HADN'T HAD A DOCTOR'S

APPOINTMENT TODAY AND MY

SCHEDULE MIGHT HAVE BEEN

SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT IT MIGHT HAVE

BEEN ME WALKING IN FRONT OF

HERE.

>> I COULDN'T BELIEVE THAT IT

WAS BASICALLY OUR DOORSTEP.

AND IT MADE ME REALLY NERVOUS

AND SAD TO KNOW THAT A LOT OF

FAMILIES HAD LOST THEIR LOVED

ONES OR THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHERE

THEY WERE AND THEY COULDN'T

SITUATE THEM.

SO I'M JUST GLAD THAT WE'RE SAFE

BUT, YEAH, OUR HEARTS ARE WITH

THE FAMILIES WHO LOST SOMEBODY

TODAY.

>> Ian: AND IOANNA IS HERE NOW.

THE POLICE CHIEF IS SPEAKING

THIS EVENING.

WHAT IS THE LATEST WITH HIM?

>> Reporter: THE CRIME SCENE

IS A BIG ONE, STRETCHES ALMOST A

KILOMETRE DOWN THAT WAY.

WE SPOKE TO A COUPLE OFFICERS ON

THE SCENE AND THEY'LL BE HERE

FOR A COUPLE DAYS.

POLICE ARE PLEADING WITH THE

PUBLIC TO SEND IN ANYTHING THEY

HAVE, SNIPPETS OF VIDEO, ANY

EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS, BECAUSE

THEY LITERALLY DO WANT TO PIECE

THIS AND CONSTRUCT THIS TIMELINE

AS ACCURATELY AS POSSIBLE.

>> Ian: AS SOON AS THIS HAPPENED

AND THEY STILL HAVE QUESTIONS ON

MOTIVE WHAT DO WE KNOW ON THAT?

>> Reporter: THEY'RE NOT

SPEAKING SPECIFICALLY ABOUT

MOTIVE AND THEY'RE NOT RULING

ANYTHING OUT YET.

HERE'S WHAT THE TORONTO POLICE

CHIEF HAD TO SAY ABOUT MOTIVE...

>> WE'RE ALL PUTTING OUR PIECES

TOGETHER TO SEE EXACTLY WHAT WE

HAVE AND AT THIS PARTICULAR

POINT IN TIME THERE'S NOTHING

THAT DOES AFFECT THE NATIONAL

SECURITY FOOTPRINT.

WE ARE LOOKING VERY STRONGLY TO

WHAT THE EXACT MOTIVATION WAS

FOR THIS PARTICULAR INCIDENT TO

TAKE PLACE AND AT THE END OF THE

DAY WE'LL HAVE A FULSOME ANSWER

AND A FULSOME ACCOUNT TO WHAT

THE CONCLUSION OF THIS IS.

>> I WILL JUST SAY TO PEOPLE

THAT I HOPE THEY WILL

UNDERSTAND, AS I KNOW THEY DO,

PEOPLE THAT COME TO THIS CITY

FROM AROUND THE WORLD THIS IS

NOT THE TRAGIC INCIDENT THAT IS

NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF HOW WE

LIVE OR WHO WE ARE OR ANYTHING

TO DO WITH LIFE IN THIS CITY ON

A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS.

AND THAT I HOPE THAT PEOPLE WILL

REFLECT ON THAT, WILL REAFFIRM

THAT, WILL GO TO WORK TOMORROW

AND PERHAPS OFFER AS SOMETIMES

IS THE CASE IN CHURCHES A SIGN

OF PEACE TO EACH OTHER.

JUST IN SOME SMALL WAY TO

ACKNOWLEDGE THAT WE'RE GOING TO

CARRY ON WITH HEAVY HEARTS BUT

THAT WE'LL CARRY ON WITH THE

LIFE THAT IS ADMIRED AROUND THE

WORLD.

WE DOLL THAT IN THE WAY THAT

TORONTONIANS DO THINGS.

>> PEOPLE ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE

THINKING ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING

HERE IN TORONTO AND THINKING

ABOUT THE FAMILIES AND THE

VICTIMS.

SO I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE WHO

HAS BEEN SO READY TO SUPPORT AND

TO ENCOURAGE ANYONE WHO HAS

INFORMATION AS THE MAYOR AND THE

CHIEF HAVE SAID TO COME FORWARD.

>> Reporter: SO REASSURING

WORDS FROM THE TORONTO'S PREMIER

AND THE MAYOR BUT THIS

INVESTIGATION WILL TAKE A LONG

TIME AND FOR SURE THERE WILL BE

MORE TO HEAR ABOUT TOMORROW.

>> Ian: IOANNA THANK YOU VERY

MUCH.

>> Reporter: YOU'RE WELCOME.

>> Ian: AS WE HEARD OFFICIALS

SAY THAT THERE'S NO NATIONAL

SECURITY THREAT, NONE THAT THEY

HAVE FOUND, BUT CBC NEWS HAS

LEARNED MORE ABOUT THE SUSPECT

IN CUSTODY, ALEK MINASSIAN.

HERE'S WHAT MAY HAVE MOTIVATED

HIM... DIANA SWAIN IS LOOKING

INTO THAT ANGLE AND, DIANA, WHAT

HAVE YOU LEARNED?

>> Reporter: WELL, AS YOU HAVE

SAID THERE'S NO INDICATION SO

FAR THAT AUTHORITIES HAVE THAT

THIS WAS MOTIVATED BY TERRORISM

OR BY POLITICAL VIEWS.

WHY THEN?

SO HERE'S WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED

SO FAR ABOUT THE MAN BEHIND THE

WHEEL AND WHAT MIGHT HAVE

MOTIVATED HIM TO DO THIS.

[SIRENS]

>> THIS CELL PHONE VIDEO SHOWS

THE DRIVER AS HE STEPS OUT OF

THE VAN AND INTO THE LINE OF A

POLICE OFFICER WHO HAS HIS

WEAPON DRAWN.

THAT DRIVER HAS NOW BEEN

IDENTIFIED AS 25-YEAR-OLD ALEK

MINASSIAN.

WATCH AS HE GESTURES, APPEARING

TO TRY TO PROVOKE THE TORONTO

POLICE OFFICER INTO FIRING ON

HIM.

>> GET DOWN!

>> Reporter: AND LISTEN AS HE

YELLS AT THE OFFICER TO SHOOT

HIM.

>> COME ON, GET DOWN!

GET DOWN!

>> Reporter: TONIGHT MINASSIAN

IS IN CUSTODY AS POLICE SEARCH

FOR A MOTIVE, ONE POSSIBLE

EXPLANATION IS CIRCULATING

ONLINE, SUGGESTING THAT

MINASSIAN WAS ANGRY OVER BEING

REBUKED BY WOMEN.

IN WHAT APPEARS TO BE A POST ON

FACEBOOK WHICH A MAN WITH THE

SAME NAME

AND PICTURE OF MINASSIAN REFERS

TO THE SUPREME GENTLEMAN ELLIOT

RODGER.

>> HI, ELLIOT RODGER HERE.

>> Reporter: IN FACT, ELLIOTT

WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR A VIOLENT

RAM PAIN THAT KILLED SIX PEOPLE

AND INJURING OVER A DOZEN MORE.

>> TOMORROW IS THE DAY OF

RETRIBUTION, THE DAY IN WHICH I

WILL HAVE MY REVENGE AGAINST

HUMANITY.

>> Reporter: A VIDEO RODGER

POSTED JUST BEFOREHAND RAGED

ABOUT SUCCESSIVE WOMEN TURNING

DOWN HIS ADVANCES.

>> OH, BECAUSE GIRLS HAVE NEVER

BEEN ATTRACTED TO ME.

>> Reporter: IN THAT VIDEO MEN

WHO ALWAYS SEEM TO WIN WITH

WOMEN WERE REFERRED TO AS

"CHADS."

"STACIES," THE WOMEN WHO TURNED

MEN DOWN, RENTING THOSE LIKE

RODGER INCELS OR INTOLD TARILY

CELIBATE.

THIS POSTING SAYS THAT THE INCEL

REBEL ONE HAS ALREADY BEGUN.

WE WILL OVERTHROW ALL OF THE

CHADS AND STACYS.

CBC NEWS IS NOT ABLE TO

INDEPENDENTLY VERIFY THE POST AS

BEING MADE BY MINASSIAN.

THERE IS NO INDICATION SO FAR

THAT HE TARGETED ANY SPECIFIC

PERSON AS HE PLOWED DOWN THE

SIDEWALK BUT, RATHER, AIMED HIS

VEHICLE AT ANYONE IN HIS PATH.

>> Ian: SO, DIANA, A LOT TO

DIGEST THERE.

DIGEST THERE.

TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU KNOW

DIGEST THERE.

TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU KNOW

IN THIS CASE?

>> Reporter: THERE'S NOT A

WHOLE LOT MORE ABOUT HIM ON

SOCIAL MEDIA, IAN.

WHAT WE DID FIND IS HIS LINKED

IN PROFILE WHICH SAYS THAT HE'S

A

SENECA COLLEGE STUDENT, A

COLLEGE HERE IN TORONTO.

HE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A

STUDENT THERE FOR SOME TIME,

FROM 2011 TO PRESENT DAY, SO

TALKING SEVEN YEARS.

IT SEEMS THAT

HE WAS DEVELOPING AN APP, AN APP

TO HELP YOU TO FIND FREE PARKING

SPOTS IN TORONTO.

BEYOND THAT BASED ON THE FOOTAGE

WE DON'T BELIEVE THAT HE WAS

SERIOUSLY INJURED IN ANY WAY AS

HE WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY.

>> Ian: ALL RIGHT, DIANA SWAIN,

THANK YOU.

>> Rosemary: AS DIANA

MENTIONED THERE IN HER PIECE, A

GROUP NAME THAT YOU HAVE

PROBABLY NEVER HEARD OF ABOUT --

INCELS OR INVOLUNTARY CELIBATES

AND THEIR BRAND OF CONVERSATION

HAS BEEN BANNED FROM WEBSITES

LIKE REDDIT AND WHETHER

MINASSIAN CONSIDERED HIMSELF

THAT, BUT WHAT DOES IT

MEAN ANYWAY, TO BRAND YOURSELF

AS ONE?

ISHMAEL DARO IS WITH BUZZFEED

WHO HAS DUG INTO THIS.

GOOD TO SEE YOU.

WHAT IS THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE IF

YOU WERE TO BREAK IT DOWN FOR

US?

>> WELL, IT'S IN THE NAME,

RIGHT, IT'S INVOLUNTARY

CELIBATE.

THESE ARE YOUNG PEOPLE, MOSTLY

MEN, WHO FEEL THEY HAVE BEEN

FORCED INTO CELIBACY, THAT THEY

HAVEN'T HAD SUCCESS WITH WOMEN

IN ROMANTIC AND SEXUAL

RELATIONSHIPS AND OVER TIME, YOU

KNOW, THAT CAN REALLY CURDLE

INTO SOME REALLY RESENTFUL

SENTIMENTS ABOUT WOMEN IN

GENERAL.

>> Rosemary: DOES IT OR HAS IT

-- I GUESS THAT IT HAS -- BUT

DOES IT NORMALLY TAKE THE FORM

OF VIOLENCE?

>> WELL, I THINK THAT FOR A LOT

OF PEOPLE, YOU KNOW, THESE

TERMS -- THERE'S A HEAVY

LAYER OF IRONY.

SO IT'S NOT UNCOMMON FOR

SOMEBODY BETWEEN RELATIONSHIPS

TO JOKINGLY SAY THAT I'M

INVOLUNTARY CELIBATE.

BUT FOR PEOPLE WITHIN

COMMUNITIES WHERE THEY VERY

SERIOUSLY SELF-IDENTIFY AS THAT,

IT IS A LITTLE MORE BARBED AND

THERE IS OFTEN VERY STRONG

ANTI-WOMAN AND ANTI-FEMINIST

LANGUAGE WHERE THESE YOUNG MEN

OFTEN FEEL THEY ARE OWED

RELATIONSHIPS AND THEY'RE OWED

SEX.

AND WHEN THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN

THEY CAN GET QUITE ANGRY.

>> Rosemary: SO WOULD YOU SAY

THAT A SUB-GROUP OF SORT OF

MARGINALIZED YOUNG PEOPLE?

OR IS IT SOMETHING SLIGHTLY MORE

DANGEROUS AND NEFARIOUS?

>> WELL, I THINK THAT IT'S

IMPOSSIBLE TO TAKE THIS

OUT OF THE LARGER WORLD OF

ONLINE IN COMMUNITIES WHERE

OFTEN YOUNG MEN -- THEY MIGHT

JOIN AND NOT REALLY HAVE THEIR

IDENTITIES TOTALLY MOLDED YET

BUT OVER TIME YOU SEE THIS IN

COMMUNITIES LIKE REDDIT AND

POSTING ENOUGH AND FINDING THIS

COMMUNITY THAT CAN RADICALIZE

YOU FURTHER THAN YOU REALIZE

WHEN YOU FIRST JOINED THIS

GROUP.

YOU MIGHT HAVE ONLY WANTED TO

POST SOME MEANS OR

TRADE SOME JOKES WITH OTHER

YOUNG MEN.

>> Rosemary: YOU USED THE WORD

"RADICALIZED" WHICH IS AN

INTERESTING CHOICE OF WORDS

HERE.

I WONDER IF THERE'S CHATTER

TONIGHT ABOUT THIS INCIDENT?

IS THERE SOMEONE CLAIMING

RESPONSIBILITY OR THE GROUP

CELEBRATING IN SOME WAY?

>> I THINK THAT IT'S STILL VERY

EARLY AND PROBABLY TOO EARLY TO

SAY, BUT I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED

IF ON SOME OF THESE DARKER

CORNERS OF THE WEB WHERE A

CERTAIN KIND OF REACTIONARY

POLITICS HAS DEVELOPED IN THE

LAST FEW YEARS, IF YOU WERE TO

LOOK TONIGHT I THINK THAT YOU

MIGHT SEE -- YOU MIGHT SEE SOME

SYMPATHY.

AGAIN, IT'S VERY EARLY TO SAY

BUT I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF

HE BECOMES AN ICON, SORT OF LIKE

ELLIOT RODGER BECAME IN THE SAME

COMMUNITY.

>> Rosemary: AGAIN, WE HAVE

NOT

CONFIRMED THAT THIS ASSOCIATION

IS THERE ON THOSE WEB PAGES THAT

DIANA MENTIONED.

WOULD IT SURPRISE YOU TO SEE

THAT IT WAS?

OR IS THIS MAYBE MORE COMMON

THAN WE THINK?

>> I THINK THAT, AGAIN, IT'S TOO

EARLY, BUT THE FACT THAT THIS

POST THAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT

DID SPECIFICALLY CITE ELLIOT

RODGER WHO HAS BECOME A BIT OF A

STRANGE MARTYR FIGURE IN CERTAIN

PARTS OF THE WEB, I THINK THAT

YOU CAN SEE THAT CONNECTION.

>> Rosemary: OKAY, ISHMAED

DARO, THANK YOU FOR

HELPING US TO UNDERSTAND

SOMETHING THAT NONE OF US REALLY

KNEW ABOUT UNTIL TODAY.

>>> THE FEDERAL SECURITY

OFFICIALS AND ALL LEADERS FROM

ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT ARE

KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON THE

SITUATION IN TORONTO TONIGHT.

KATIE SIMPSON HAS MORE ON THE

SECURITY THREAT IN THIS COUNTRY.

>> Reporter: CANADA'S PUBLIC

SAFETY MINISTER IS BEING CAREFUL

WITH HIS WORDS, SAYING IT IS

IRRESPONSIBLE TO SPECULATE.

>> THERE WOULD APPEAR TO BE MORE

NATIONAL SECURITY CONNECTION TO

THIS PARTICULAR INCIDENT.

>> Reporter: RALPH GOODALE

HAPPENED TO BE IN TORONTO TODAY

TO HOST A MEETING OF PUBLIC

SAFETY AND SECURITY MINISTERS

FROM G7 COUNTRIES.

HE SAYS THAT THE INCIDENT IS

UNRELATED TO THE MEETINGS AND

THERE'S NO NEED TO RAISE

CANADA'S NATIONAL SECURITY

THREAT LEVEL.

>> The Hon. Ralph Goodale: I

THINK THAT IT'S IMPORTANT TO

STATE THIS -- THERE IS NO

INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO ME AT

THE PRESENT TIME THAT WOULD LEAD

US TO CONCLUDE THAT THERE SHOULD

BE A CHANGE IN RISK LEVEL.

>> Reporter: THAT THREAT LEVEL

SITS AT MEDIUM, WHICH IS WHERE

IT HAS BEEN SINCE THE 2014

SHOOTING ON PARLIAMENT HILL.

AFTER THAT ATTACK MAJOR PUBLIC

EVENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY,

INCLUDING CANADA DAY

CELEBRATIONS, NOW INVOLVE

INTENSE VISIBLE SECURITY.

THAT LEVEL HASN'T CHANGED EVEN

AFTER HIGH-PROFILE INCIDENTS

LIKE THE U-HAUL ATTACK IN

EDMONTON, AND THE THWARTED ISIS

ATTACK IN STRATHROY, ONTARIO,

AND THE MOSQUE SHOOTING IN

QUÉBEC CITY.

>> Prime Minister Justin

Trudeau: OUR THOUGHTS ARE

OBVIOUSLY WITH THOSE AFFECTED BY

THIS INCIDENT.

WE'RE STILL GATHERING

INFORMATION AND AS SOON AS WE

CAN WE'LL SHARE MORE INFORMATION

WITH CANADIANS.

>> Reporter: THE PRIME MINISTER

AND NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCIES

ARE MONITORING THE SITUATION AND

COOPERATING WITH TORONTO POLICE

AS IT LEADS THIS INVESTIGATION.

THE RCMP WILL ONLY TAKE OVER THE

CASE IF IT IS A NATIONAL

SECURITY INCIDENT.

>> WE ARE ALL UNSETTLED AND VERY

DISTURBED BY A SITUATION LIKE

THIS.

I THINK THAT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE NOT

TO BE.

IT'S FRIGHTENING.

>> Reporter: TOMORROW'S G7

NATIONAL SECURITY AND PUBLIC

SAFETY MEETINGS WILL GO AHEAD AS

PLANNED AND WHILE THIS INCIDENT

IS NOT A NATIONAL SECURITY

INVESTIGATION, IT CERTAINLY WILL

BE DISCUSSED AMONG THESE ALLIES.

KATIE SIMPSON, CBC NEWS,

TORONTO.

>> Rosemary: THE PRIME

MINISTER RELEASED A STATEMENT IN

RESPONSE TO THE ATTACK THAT

HAPPENED THIS AFTERNOON.

AND IT SAYS IN PART...

HE ADDS, OF COURSE, THAT THEY

ARE AND THEY CONTINUE TO WATCH

THE SITUATION CLOSELY.

ADRIENNE IS IN LONDON AND

HAPPENS TO BE THERE ON ANOTHER

ASSIGNMENT FOR US TONIGHT.

BUT YOU ARE, ADRIENNE, ON

WESTMINSTER BRIDGE AND WE SAW A

VIOLENT ATTACK THERE LAST MARCH?

>> Adrienne: INDEED.

ROSIE, LONDON HAD TO LEARN VERY

QUICKLY HOW TO DEAL WITH THESE

SORT OF VEHICLE ATTACKS.

LAST YEAR IN THREE SEPARATE

VEHICLE ATTACKS A DOZEN PEOPLE

WERE KILLED INCLUDING A CANADIAN

AND SO WE'LL HAVE A LOOK AT HOW

THE UNITED KINGDOM IS TRYING TO

MITIGATE THAT THREAT IN A

MOMENT, BUT, FIRST, LET'S HAVE A

LOOK AT HOW AND SOMETIMES WHY

VEHICLES ARE BEING USED AS

WEAPONS.

QUÉBEC, 2014, MARTIN

COUTURE-ROULEAU SAT IN A PARKING

LOT FOR TWO HOURS BEFORE

STEPPING ON THE GAS AND RAMMING

HIS VEHICLE INTO TWO CANADIAN

SOLDIERS.

WARRANT OFFICER PATRICE VINCENT

WAS KILLED AND ANOTHER PERSON

WAS INJURED.

>> IT'S A DELIBERATE ACT.

WITH REGARDS TO HOW FAR IT WAS

PLANNED IT'S REALLY HARD TO SAY.

>> Reporter: MARTIN

COUTURE-ROULEAU WAS STOPPED AND

KILLED A SHORT TIME LATER.

VEHICLES HAVE BEEN USED FOR

DECADES TO KILL PEOPLE BUT IT

WAS IN 2010 WHEN TERROR GROUPS

STARTED INSTRUCTING EXTREMISTS

ON HOW TO USE RENTAL VANS AND

TRUCKS.

IT SEEMED TO BE EASY TO OBTAIN.

>> VERY EASY TO OBTAIN.

YOU CAN STEAL A DRIVER'S LICENSE

IF YOU HAD TO AND STILL GET ONE

OF THESE RENTAL VEHICLES SO

THEY'RE UBIQUITOUS.

IT'S A WHITE VEHICLE, VERY HARD,

BLENDS INTO EVERYDAY SOCIETY.

AND IT CAUSES GREAT, GREAT

DAMAGE.

AND NOT ONLY THAT IF YOUR THE

DRIVER YOU'RE SOMEWHAT

PROTECTED.

>> Adrienne: EVEN AS POLICE

AROUND THE WORLD ARE MORE AWARE

OF THE THREATS, THE ATTACKS ARE

GETTING DEADLY.

IN JULY 2016, 86 PEOPLE WERE

KILLED WHILE CELEBRATING

BASTILLE DAY IN FRANCE WHEN A

MAN IN A RENTAL TRUCK PLOWED

THROUGH A PROMENADE.

MORE THAN A DOZEN PEOPLE DIED

WHEN A MAN IN A RENTED VAN

RAMMED INTO A GROUP OF

PEDESTRIANS ON A STREET IN

BARCELONA.

IS IT LONDON WAS ATTACKED FLY

TIMES ON THE LONDON BRIDGE AND

HERE ON WESTMINSTER BRIDGE.

SO AFTER THE WESTMINSTER BRIDGE

ATTACK HERE THERE WAS PANIC IN

THE CITY AS YOU CAN IMAGINE AND

THERE WAS AN EFFORT BY SCOTLAND

YARD TO LOOK AT SOME 33 BRIDGES

IN LONDON AND TO PUT BARRIERS UP

ON ALL OF THEM.

A DECISION WAS MADE TO NOT PUT

IT ON THE LONDON BRIDGE AND THAT

WAS 24 HOURS BEFORE THE ATTACK

ON THE LONDON BRIDGE.

SO THERE'S PHYSICAL PROTECTIONS

THEY'RE UNDERTAKING.

RENTAL CAR COMPANIES, ROSIE,

HAVE SAID WHAT CAN WE DO?

SO THEY'RE LOOKING FOR A WAY TO

DO REAL-TIME CHECKS OF CLIENTS

AGAINST NATIONAL TERROR

DATABASES TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY

FIND OUT THAT THEY'RE NOT

RENTING A ELECTRONIC TO SOMEONE

ON A WATCH LIST.

POLICE HAVE NOW BEEN TOLD THAT

THEY CAN SHOOT AT MOVING

VEHICLES.

THAT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT YOU

COULD DO HERE BUT THE DECISION

HAS BEEN MADE THAT IT'S TOO

IMPORTANT THAT IF IT'S STILL

GOING THERE'S CHANCES THAT IT'S

PART OF AN ATTACK AND YOU NEED

TO STOP IT.

>> Rosemary: THOSE ARE EXTREME

AND PREVENTATIVE MEASURES.

AND CANADA IS TRYING TO PREVENT

THIS.

WHAT ARE AUTHORITIES DOING HERE?

>> Reporter: YOU ARE SEEING IT

MORE OFTEN.

AND YOU ARE SEEING DUMP TRUCKS

ACROSSED ACROSS PEDESTRIAN

STREETS WHEN THERE'S FESTIVALS

UNDERWAY.

AT THE START OF BASEBALL SEASON

IN TORONTO A LARGE PART OF THE

DOWNTOWN CORA ROUND THE STADIUM

WERE BLOCKED OFF TO CARS.

THAT WAS NEW BUT THIS IS PART OF

THAT AWARENESS THAT POLICE HAVE

AND THAT THESE ARE JUST, YOU

KNOW, FOR ATTACKERS THESE ARE

CRIMES OF OPPORTUNITY AND THESE

VEHICLES ARE SO EASILY OBTAINED

AND IT'S SO LOW TECH, THEY BLEND

IN SO EASILY AND ALL OF THAT IS

SO FRUSTRATING FOR POLICE.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE, ROSIE,

THAT WE ARE HEARING TONIGHT FROM

THE COMPANY THAT RENTED THAT

VEHICLE TODAY AND THAT COMPANY'S

NAME IS RYDER.

IT ISSUED A STATEMENT AND SAYING

IN PART, "WE

ARE SADDENED BY THIS TRAGIC

EVENT AND OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHIES

GO OUT TO THOSE IMPACTED.

WE TAKE THE SAFETY AND SECURITY

OF OUR ENTIRE FLEET VERY

SERIOUSLY AND WE ARE COOPERATING

FULLY WITH AUTHORITIES."

WE HAVE MUCH MORE FOR YOU ON

THIS DEVELOPING STORY TONIGHT.

>> Andrew: 10 FAMILIES ARE

GRIEVING, 15 MORE WORRIED ABOUT

THEIR INJURED LOVED ONES.

WE'LL TELL YOU WHAT WE KNOW

ABOUT THE PEOPLE BEHIND THOSE

NUMBERS.

>> Rosemary: WE HAVE MORE ON

THE POLICE OFFICER WHO TOOK DOWN

THE ALLEGED ATTACKER IN A

REMARKABLE ACT OF BRAVERY.

>> Ian: TORONTO IS A CITY WHERE

MANY ARE MOURNING BUT ALSO A

CITY WHERE TENS OF THOUSANDS OF

PEOPLE HAVE GATHERED TONIGHT FOR

A HOCKEY PLAYOFF GAME.

WE'LL TAKE YOU THROUGH TO THE

SECURITY MEASURES AND THE MOOD.

THIS IS "THE NATIONAL."

(*)

>> IT'S VERY CLEAR TO SAY THAT

THE ACTIONS LOOKED DISTRIBUTE.

>> Andrew: THE LATEST FROM

POLICE AS THEY INVESTIGATE

TODAY'S DEADLY VAN ATTACK IN

NORTH TORONTO THAT LEFT 10

PEOPLE DEAD.

WHAT THEY'RE TRYING TO FIGURE

OUT IS MOTIVE -- WHAT THE DRIVER

WAS THINKING.

THE SUSPECT, 25-YEAR-OLD ALEK

MINASSIAN, BUT BEFORE TODAY HE

WASN'T ON POLICE RADAR AND SO

FAR THE OFFICIALS SAY THAT

THERE'S NO SIGN THAT HE'S

CONNECTED TO ANY TERRORIST

ORGINISATION.

TONIGHT, OF COURSE, THERE ARE

MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE

SUSPECT.

BUT WHAT LIKELY MATTERS MOST TO

THE INJURED VICTIMS AND THEIR

FAMILIES RIGHT NOW IS RECOVERY.

10 OF THEM WERE TRANSPORTED TO

TORONTO'S SUNNYBROOK HOSPITAL

NOT TOO FAR FROM THE SCENE OF

THE ATTACK.

THAT'S WHERE CBC'S NATALIE

KALATA

IS STANDING BY.

NATALIE, YOU HAVE BEEN THERE FOR

A FEW HOURS NOW.

DESCRIBE THE SCENE TO US, WHAT

HAS BEEN HAPPENING THERE?

>> Reporter: WELL, IT'S NOT

SURPRISING WHEN YOU'RE OUTSIDE

OF A HOSPITAL TO SEE FAMILY

MEMBERS RUNNING INTO THE E.R.

BUT THAT'S WHAT WE HAVE BEEN

SEEING FOR A LAST WHILE AS WE

KNOW THAT PEOPLE INSIDE, THE

HOSPITAL OFFICIALS AS WELL AS

POLICE, ARE TRYING TO TRACK DOWN

THE FAMILY MEMBERS OF THOSE

INSIDE WHO ARE BEING TREATED.

WE KNOW THAT INSIDE WAS AN

EMOTIONAL PLACEMENT WE SPOKE TO

ONE MAN WHO SAID THAT HE KNEW AT

ONE POINT THAT THERE WERE

INDIVIDUALS WHO DID NOT MAKE IT,

WHO HAD DIED, THAT HAVE PASSED

AWAY, THAT WERE IN THE E.R.

HERE'S WHAT HE HAD TO SAY, TAKE

A LISTEN...

>> YOU COULD TELL THAT THEY

PULLED THE CURTAINS AROUND HER

AFTER THE WHOLE TEAM WAS IN

THERE WORKING ON HER.

BUT IT WAS VERY, VERY SAD.

SO MUCH GOING ON.

AND THEY WERE ALL -- THE DOCTORS

AND THE INTERNS WERE ALL SO COOL

ABOUT IT WAS WHAT WAS AMAZING.

>> Reporter: AND OF COURSE,

THE PEOPLE THAT WE SPOKE TO SAID

THEY ARE TRYING THEIR BEST TO

COMMUNICATE WITH THOSE

INDIVIDUALS INSIDE WHO WERE

VICTIMS OF THIS ATTACK WHO CAN

COMMUNICATE AND TRYING, OF

COURSE, TO GET AS MUCH

INFORMATION AS THEY CAN AS THEY

CONTINUE IN THEIR INVESTIGATION.

WE KNOW THAT THERE IS A LOT TO

GO THROUGH.

WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY AS WELL

TO SPEAK TO AN ACTING

SUPERVISING INDIVIDUAL WHO WORKS

WITH THE PARAMEDICS AND THE

E.M.S. SERVICES, TO TALK A

LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT HE SAW ON

THE SCENE COMING OUT OF THE

HOSPITAL HERE AFTER HE HAD BEEN

HERE.

HERE'S WHAT HE HAD TO SAY...

>> YONGE AND FINCH AND SHEPPARD,

PURE CARNAGE.

DEBRIS EVERYWHERE AND THIS

AREA -- YOU CAN'T EVEN DESCRIBE

IT -- IT'S JUST VICTIMS

EVERYWHERE.

>> Reporter: NOW EARLIER IN

THE EVENING WE WERE TOLD OF THE

10 PEOPLE BROUGHT HERE TO

HOSPITAL TWO ARRIVED WITH WHAT

THEY CALLED VITAL SIGNS ABSENT

AND WERE PRONOUNCED DEAD.

FIVE WERE AT THE TIME REPORTED

IN CRITICAL INJURY, CRITICAL

CONDITION.

THREE WITH SERIOUS -- IN SERIOUS

CONDITION, BUT THAT, OF COURSE,

IS EXPECTED TO EVOLVE AS THE

NIGHT PROGRESSES.

ANDREW?

>> Andrew: ALL RIGHT, NATALIE

KALATA OUTSIDE OF TORONTO'S

SUNNYBROOK HOSPITAL, THANK YOU

VERY MUCH.

>>> LET'S TURN BACK TO IAN

BECAUSE AS IS OFTEN THE CASE

WHEN WE TALK ABOUT SURVIVORS OF

A VIOLENT ATTACK, THE HOURS AND

THE DAYS TO COME CAN BE A

DIFFICULT TIME, SOMETHING, IAN,

YOU COULD SAY IS TRUE FOR THE

WHOLE CITY?

>> Ian: THAT'S RIGHT, ANDREW.

THE CITY IS CERTAINLY PULLING

TOGETHER TONIGHT.

TAKE A LOOK AT THIS SHOT OF THE

TORONTO SKYLINE, THE C.N. TOWER

IS DARK TONIGHT IN THE WAKE OF

THE ATTACK.

FROM A DISTANCE TORONTO LOOKS

JUST THE SAME AS ALWAYS.

IT FELT THAT WAY TAKING THE

SUBWAY NORTHWARD TO THIS SCENE

BUT IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY,

ESPECIALLY AROUND HERE, A LOT

HAS CHANGED.

THAT REPUTATION OF A SAFE AND

WELCOMING PLACE IS IN DOUBT FOR

MANY TONIGHT.

THE ATTACK SHOCKING SO MANY

PEOPLE.

AND AS DAVID COMMON LEARNED IT'S

WASN'T A WEAPON.

PART THAT WE SAW THERE.

WERE YOU SURPRISED AT POLICE

RESPONSE AND HOW QUICKLY THAT

WAS CONTAINED?

TO THE OFFICER.

HE CLEARLY RECEIVED VERY GOOD

TRAINING.

HE FOLLOWED THAT TRAINING TO THE

NTH DEGREE AND HE NEUTRALIZED A

GUY WHO CARRIED OUT A HEINOUS

ATTACK.

NOW THE GUY IS ALIVE AND NOT

DEAD WHICH MEANS THAT HE CAN

QUESTION HIM.

HE CAN HOPEFULLY FIND OUT WHAT

HE DID AND WHY HE DID IT,

SO I THINK THAT THIS IS A

TREMENDOUS KUDOS TO TORONTO

POLICE SERVICES, AND THE

TRAINING THEY GIVE THEIR

OFFICERS AND THIS PARTICULAR

OFFICER WHO DID WHAT HE WAS

TRAINED TO DO.

>> Rosemary: OKAY.

AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT

POLICE WILL WANT TO KNOW IS

OBVIOUSLY MOTIVE HERE THOUGH IT

APPEARS FROM GOVERNMENT SOURCES

AND ELSEWHERE THAT THERE'S NO

NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT.

SO WHERE DOES THE INVESTIGATION

GO FROM HERE IF THAT IS THE

CASE?

>> YOU KNOW, I LISTENED TO MARK

SAUNDERS AND I LISTENED TO THE

MINISTER TALK ABOUT THIS.

WHAT THEY'RE REALLY SAYING,

ROSEMARY, AS OF NOW THERE'S NO

INFORMATION AND NO INTELLIGENCE

TO SUGGEST A NATIONAL SECURITY

LINK.

BUT WE'RE, WHAT, SEVEN, EIGHT

HOURS AFTER THIS SO THERE'S A

LOT TO BE LEARNED.

SO WHAT THEY'RE GOING TO DO IS

BASICALLY ASK HIM -- MAYBE HE'S

COOPERATING AND MAYBE HE'S NOT

BUT MAYBE HE'LL TELL THEM WHY HE

DID WHAT HE DID.

AND THEY'LL PROBABLY GET A

WARRANT TO LOOK AT HIS CELL

PHONE AND TO LOOK AT HIS EMAIL

AND A WARRANT TO SEARCH HIS

APARTMENT OR HOUSE AND THEY'LL

TALK TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND

TALK TO WORK MATES.

THEY WILL SEE IF THERE WAS

ANYTHING AMISS, WAS THIS GUY

GOING DOWN A CERTAIN PATHWAY AND

WAS ANYTHING NOTICED.

SO IT'S CONCENTRIC CIRCLES, IF

YOU WILL AND START WITH THE

SUSPECT AND GO FROM THERE AND

SEE WHAT YOU CAN FIND OUT.

>> Rosemary: YOU KNOW OFF THE

TOP WE TALKED ABOUT

THINGS THAT LONDON HAS DONE TO

PREVENT THESE KINDS OF ATTACKS

BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL TOO COMMON

IN THAT CITY.

THINGS LIKE

EVEN PRESCREENING PEOPLE WHEN

THEY RENT VANS.

IS THERE A WAY TO PREVENT AN

INCIDENT LIKE THIS, A LONE

ATTACKER IN A RENTED VEHICLE?

>> I DON'T THINK SO, ROSEMARY.

UNLESS HE'S ALREADY ON YOUR

RADAR OR UNDER SURVEILLANCE OR

UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR ANOTHER

PURPOSE IT'S REALLY, REALLY

HARD.

AND YOU TALK, WELL, YEAH, RENTAL

PLACES SHOULD

DO BACKGROUND CHECKS.

HOW MANY VEHICLES ARE RENTED IN

TORONTO ON A GIVEN DAY, HOW CAN

YOU DO THAT IN REAL TIME?

AND YOU CAN PUT IT OUTSIDE

A.C.C. OR OUTSIDE OF

PARLIAMENT OR QUEEN'S PARK BUT

YOU CAN'T PUT BOULDERS UP AND

DOWN

YONGE STREET.

SO WE HAVE TO BE REALISTIC.

AND, SURE, LOCKDOWN AND SECURITY

IN THE VENUES BR YOU EXPECT A

LOT OF PEOPLE BUT WE CAN'T MAKE

THE CITY INTO A FORTRESS.

AND YOU DON'T WANT TO EVEN GO

DOWN THAT PATHWAY.

>> Rosemary: SO THE ONLY WAY

THEN IS, WHAT, SORT OF WATCH FOR

AND TO MONITOR CHATTER AND TRY

TO GET AHEAD OF THESE PEOPLE?

EVEN ONLINE IT'S DIFFICULT TO

MONITOR SOMEONE 24/7.

>> YOU CAN'T.

WE LEARNED THAT WITH STRATHROY

WITH AARON DRIVER.

HE WAS ON A PEACE FILE BUT HE

WAS NOT BEING MONITORED BECAUSE

THEY HAD OTHER PRIORITIES AT THE

TIME.

PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE

HOW MUCH TIME AND EFFORT IT

TAKES TO MONITOR SOMEONE.

IF YOU ARE WATCHING THEM YOU

MIGHT GET LUCKY BUT THE VAST

MAJORITY AND NOT WATCHED 24/7,

NOR SHOULD THEY BE IN A

DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY LIKE CANADA.

>> Rosemary: THANK YOU FOR

YOUR PERSPECTIVE, I APPRECIATE

IT, SIR.

FOR THOSE WHO SAW WHAT HAPPENED

IT WILL STAY WITH THEM FOR LIFE.

AMIR BAHMEYEH WAS HEADING TO

HE SAW THE ATTACK AND WE HEARD A

BIT FROM HIM EARLIER IN THE SHOW

AND HERE IS A BIT MORE WHAT HE

HAD TO SAY ABOUT IT...

ONE AFTER ONE.

AND THERE WAS LIKE -- I SAW

AND THE PEOPLE LIKE SCREAMING

AND GOING AROUND.

Armored Warfare - Kornet-EM Developer Diary - Duration: 3:33.

Hello everyone!

Today, I'm going to tell you about a new vehicle that we announced some time ago.

It's the Kornet-EM.

Like in real life, it's an armored fighting vehicle based on Tigr-M with Kornet ATGM launchers.

In our game it's a Tier 10 AFV available via a new dealer Oscar Faraday.

The main feature of this vehicle is the ability to switch firing modes while in battle.

It has two modes of fire.

The first and the main one is the mode where both launchers are active.

That means 8 missiles in total.

And the player can fire all 8 missiles roughly in 11 seconds.

The disadvantage of this mode is that you can only fire forward in an arc of approximately

90 degrees.

The second mode is different from the first one in the fact that only one launcher is

active, which means only 4 missiles, but the firing arc is unlimited.

You also have to take into account that the launchers are reloaded from the inside of

the vehicle and require a significant amount of time to return to their firing position.

You can switch modes at any point in battle but it takes a bit of time and you can only

switch once per 30 seconds.

At first glance we it might seem that the vehicle is simply terrifying since it can

fire 8 missiles in 11 seconds, but that's not the case.

It has two major weaknesses.

The first one is its hit point pool and armor.

The average armor value of this vehicle is 5 millimeters.

That's like standard armored car anti-bullet protection.

The second major disadvantage is the fact that it has no gun.

That's why it's not the best choice for PvE.

We discussed the vehicle's mechanics but there are two more things about this vehicle.

First, as its name suggests, the vehicle is carrying Kornet ATGMs.

Those are currently the best ATGMs in our game.

They have higher penetration, deal more damage and fly faster than other missiles.

We already have these missiles in the game on the T-15.

But, unlike the T-15, the Kornet-EM has a self-guiding module.

What that means is that the vehicle can fire the Kornet missiles in fire and forget mode.

The second notable thing is that this is currently the fastest vehicle in the game.

Its maximum speed is 140 km/h.

All in all, what we made is quite an interesting and unique vehicle which, I believe, will

find a number of fans.

It's for those who love to fire at long distances to kill tanks someone else spotted or who

like to go really fast and let the others destroy the targets they spotted.

Try it out, we hope you'll like it!

- [Narrator] Unconditional love is an amazing thing,

even when we try mom's patience,

time after time.

And as we get older, they keep on loving us for who we are,

just the way we are.

So this mother's day, when mom says don't get me anything,

do what you did when you were a kid,

don't listen to her,

because unconditional love deserves an unforgettable gift.
