Albert Woodfox has spent 43 years in solitary confinement.
He becomes the longest- serving U.S Pisoner in solitary confined.
Just imagine being locked away in a prison cell for 43 years, for 23 hours a day with
no lights, no human contacts.
The only voice you can hear is the one in your mind.
Solitary confinement can have psychological and physiological effects on you.
This is one of the worst form of punishment.
So just imagine being punished every single day of your life for 43 years and on top of
this one Albert Woodfox was innocent.
The sole purpose of solitary confinement is to break people but how do you break people
who are innocent.
What happens to the minds of the innocent?
What thoughts are racing through their heads?
So this right here is the insane prison life of Albert Woodfox.
"Intro"
Back in 1972 Albert Woodfox was convicted for murdering a prison corrections officers.
He was convicted along side Robert King, and Herman Wallace and together they were given
the nick name of the Angola Three.
So what has happened to the Angola Three?
The Angola three were destined to not stay silent about what has happened to them and
over the years they have shared there story.
Well this story starts back in 1971 after each of them were convicted of armed robbery.
A year later while in prison Albert Woodfox and his friend Herman Wallace were convicted
of killing 23 yr old Brent Miller who was a prison guard at Louisiana Department of
Corrections.
Brent Millar worked at the prison for less than a year before he was stabbed 38 times
Not going lightly on the sentencing both Albert Woodfox & Herman Wallace were sentenced to
solitary confinement and they were left there for over 40 years.
"Insert 10-15 seconds of prison music and images of solitary confinement and prison
images, +some text stats about confinement on the bottom of the images"
Black Panther party members released that these men were in prison for possible a crime
they didn't commit so they started an investigation themselves.
The Black Panther party was an organized political group that was active in the United States
that fought for justice and they wanted to monitor the behaviors of officers of the Oakland
Police Department and they wanted to challenge police brutality in Oakland, California.
Woodfox and Wallace joined the black panthers party and became activists seeking to improve
the conditions in Angola.
The
Black Panthers involved showed to be very effective because in 2001 after 29 yrs in
solitary confinement Woodfox and Wallace was released from prison.
The case was quickly appealed and overturned so before they were able to leave prison they
have to now keep fighting to be released from prison.
In 2008 there was another break in this case.
After 46 yrs of solitary confinement they were sent to a maximum- security prison.
During that time in 2008 and 2010 Woodfox had two appeal hearings in which he was granted
full habeas corpus.
Habeas Corpus which means Woodfox was able to stand in front of a judge for them to determine
if he has been in prison unlawfully.
If it was determined than he would be immediately released and then he would have to hope that
it doesn't get re-appealed.
Well things took a turn and for Woodfox it just seems to not go according to plan he
was so close from becoming a free man.
Woodfox appeals was overturned and he went back into solitary confinement.
In 2013 a federal district court judge in New Orleans overturned Woodfoxs conviction
for the third time.
Lousiana attorney general James Caldwell decided to make a promise to appear the district courts
decision.
James Caldwell said, we feel confident that we will again prevail at the fifth circuit
court of appeals.
However if we do not we are fully prepared and willing to retry this murderer again.
It just seems like Woodfox is not going to get a break here.
After all these years there was actually no DNA evidence, no physical evidence that linked
Woodfox to the murder of the 23 year old Brent Miller.
The only thing keeping this man in solitary confinement was one main eyewitness.
Finally at 4 decades in solitary confinement Albert Woodfox was released from prison.
He was walked out with his brother who knew he was innocent.
The media and the public surrounded Woodfox when he became
a freeman.
Well there you guys have it that was the prison life of Albert Woodfox the man who was innocent
the whole time.
Let me know in the comment section whose prison life story I should talk about next.
