hi everyone so today we're going to learn how to do the carlton dance
it's also known as the fresh dance from fortnite hence all my melee and range
weapons. so you guys know that I love cheesy dance moves I teach them in my
club dance programs, in fact I actually taught the Carlton dance but only
briefly because it's actually a tricky dance move and it was beyond the scope
of my program. so here's a brief history about the carlton slash fresh dance. the
dance originates from the 90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of bel-air hence the name
the fresh dance. it starred Will Smith but it also had a character in it named
Carlton played by the actor Alfonso Ribeiro. he was one of the most beloved
characters on the show because he played the perfect complement to Will Smith's
character. he was a nerdy little guy who just loved to secretly break out into
the Carlton dance to the song "it's not unusual" by Tom Jones.
now Alfonso Ribeiro is actually a pretty good dancer so to do the full Carlton
dance just like he does is a bit difficult. however I'm gonna show the
most popular segment and I'm gonna give beginners some variations so we can get
as close as we can to the way he does it. okay so let's get into how to do the
Carlton dance. so the fortnite fresh chance actually shows the best parts of
the Carlton dance and that's what we'll be doing so it can be broken up into two
parts the first part which most people identifies the Carlton dance it looks
like this
and the second part I call the duck walk it looks like this
okay so let's get into the Carlton dance we're gonna start with the footwork and
we're slowly going to build up until we have everything. footwork's pretty easy it
just starts with a step touch though it gets a lot different later on. so the
step touch is a move that I teach in my club dance for men program
it's a core dance move I call it a basic move because you can build off of it as
you can see I also teach a lot of variations so you definitely want to
have your step touch down. alright so as I do the step touch one thing to note is
that sometimes I actually don't tap the ground as the feet come together
because when we're actually doing the carlton dance
it's really low and fast so it's one minor thing to note
okay so let's integrate the arms down so the arms your swinging side to side like
that with your step touch so as you step to the left swing to the left stepping
up to the right swing to the right it's like that of course there's a lot more
nuances to it first thing you got to make it big it's like that and there's a
few reasons for doing that. one, for sure it's to get the proper look for it so
make sure you dance in front of the mirror and make sure that you're throwing
your hands up nice and high just like that, even if you bend your
arms like like Carlton does in some variations, you still got to throw them up. a lot
of beginners are hesitant to throw their arms higher than here, they don't feel very
comfortable but use a mirror, force yourself to bring your arms up. the other
reason for bringing your arms up is that when you swing it down it creates a lot
of weight and momentum which helps you get that natural look for the carlton
dance, so as you swing them down, it swings out kind of aggressively
and you can feel your arm weight kind of swing your body around. so you use that
momentum to swing you around. so try it with me on my count five six

seven eight good. so you'll notice that I'm really exaggerating it you probably
won't scoop as low when we're actually doing it but it's a good habit to overdo
it - it's better to overdo it and then scale it back. so let's do one more time

the carlton dance look more and more like the carlton dance or the fresh
dance. so the next thing we're going to do is we're going to integrate levels. so
we're gonna you have to do it nice and low that way you get more hip
pronunciation which gives it that classic carlton look. so this time same
thing where you're going to be in kind of a crouching position
it's like that and this is where you feel that you might not want to tap the
ground when your feet come together so try with me slowly on my count
swinging the arms with the step touch and down low five six seven eight one

okay next we're going to tune things up just a little bit to finish off with a
good beginner variation. so the next thing we're going to do is we're going
to integrate some timing, so if you just do like this
it looks kind of okay but it doesn't have that pizzazz. so one thing that's
happening with the carlton dance is you hold it up high and you delay it just a
little bit longer than you would like to and then you swing down fast. so the
swing comes really fast and the arms is kind of like a roller coaster and they
stop up there and then swing, swing, swing and stall so try it with me we're going
to integrate some modified timing with an aggressive fast swing again staying

5 6 7 8 good ok so next thing we're going to do is integrate head movement but
just for beginners. so carlton actually does it with a really crazy head
isolation which is too difficult for the scope of this lesson however you can
still integrate head movement to make it nice and cheesy looking and it's just
simple as looking where you're gonna throw your arms
like that so we're just gonna integrate some
looking. sometimes he stares forward and he's just like smiling with this huge
cheesy grin but we're gonna do looking just for this one and that's gonna
finish our beginner variation so on my count
few things to consider when approach low swing aggressively and integrate looking

okay so now we're going to leave the beginner territory and modify it so it
looks more like the Carlton dance or the fresh dance whichever you prefer. so
first thing we're going to do is we're going to modify the step touch so it's
not just a step touching low but we're going to integrate hips like that as
well as kind of a heel toe twist so I'm twisting on the toe and I'm turning on
that and you can see that as I do the step touch I don't really tap the ground
anymore and the biggest thing is you really gotta stick your hip out because
that gives it that Carlton look. so once again I will explain it slowly, I'm going
to do a step touch but you can see that I'm pivoting on the toe to twist in the
direction of my turn to that
so don't worry about the arms for now, let's just try to get that pivot as well
as the hips. keep your butt cheeks sticking out, like that
so try it with me on my count, gonna step touch with a pivot on

your toe. okay so I know that move was a bit tricky so I'm going to try it, I'm
gonna show it to you guys facing away from the camera so it
looks like this this step
making sure that you stick out your hips and you pivot on your heels so you have
this heel toe thing going on each time hit on your toe stepping on your heel as
well as sticking out your butt cheek don't forget your butt because that's
important you want to get this variation okay, so let's do it slowly thinking
about a few things - we're going to stay low, we're going to stick out the butt
cheeks each time and we're going to do that heel toe pivot that. so on my count

just do it again slowly on my account five six seven eight one two three four

good okay so you're going to have to practice that heel toe pivot few times
and make sure you're able to do it independently on its own before
integrating anything else. you might want to pause the video here just practice it
a few times okay so I know that was a tricky step so if you
don't think you got it feel free to rewind it and try it a few
more times 'cuz you have to have it automatic before you integrate the arms
back. now if you're ready to integrate the arms let's do it so we're going to
start with this foot movement and we're going to bring in the arms
so a lot of things are going on here. again you're swinging your arms down
aggressively bring it nice and high doing that step where you pronounce your
butt cheek each time as well as pivoting on your toe and stepping out with your
heel let's do it nice and slow with me on my count

okay so that in itself is a pretty good variation that you should practice
slowly and slowly build up the speed until you can do it faster. okay so that
variation was pretty darn complete it looked pretty snazzy however I will
suggest that for most of you just practice it slowly and then build it up
until you can dance it more of a regular speed. and that it's pretty good enough but
for the you - the completists - if you want to, then you're going to add in some head
movement. again this is totally not necessary it's pretty good in the form
of the last variation so what's going to happen is you can either integrate
looking like before
with that step or you can do it a little bit more like Carlton. but it's hard to
do exactly like Carlton because he's got a perfect head isolation. what you can do
is just kind of follow your head swooping with your arms so as the arms
swoop out its going to pull your body and then your head. in an exaggerated
form, what's happening is so you can see arms, body, and then head so you got to
keep those neck muscles not too tight so you can have that natural swing of the
head with your arms that, so I'm really exaggerating what's happening there as
you do it, it's going to be a little bit more tight. again this is really tricky
and you'll only do it when you've totally perfected the dance down I would
suggest just putting in looking is good enough. so what's happening is your
arms are swooping and then your head feels like it's kind of swooping with
your arms so it's actually easier to do when you kind of get some rhythm and
some momentum with it so it's actually I think it's a little easier to do at
regular speed because that you can actually feel the weight of your arms
pull your body and your head, but let's try it really slowly
the final variation on my count everything integrated
so going low five six seven eight one two three four five six seven eight

good that was pretty tricky not sure if I
communicated it right because I feel like a dancing monkey here. I'm
doing the move, trying to integrate all the components, while keeping the timing
and talking to you guys. anyways that was the Carlton/Fresh dance. practice it, and let's
move on. okay so it's time to do a slow practice some of you are gonna find
that this practice might be a bit too fast so just go back to the lesson and
practice it slowly with the lesson. okay so we're gonna start with the simplest
variation of the Carlton dance and we're gonna move into the more complicated one
so we start with a step touch with the arm swinging on my count
