Hi guys!
Hi!
Hi!
Oh! Dim sum!
Har gao.
Xiao long bao.
OH MY GOD!
I love dim sum.
Okay, the standard is...
siew mai, har gao and chee cheong fan.
pork rib with the black bean sauce, carrot cake, fried prawn dumpling, spinach dumpling,
Oh and the lotus rice thing. Wah, I always order.
Next time, I go with and then you order and I just eat.
So I always have to end it with liu sha bao.
It's almost like a dessert.
Like a dessert.
Ya.
I only try the one at Swee Choon.
Okay what, the one at Swee Choon is nice.
Canton Paradise.
Oh yes! Canton Paradise.
The one that comes in pigs.
I will poke the butt right,
so it will look like it's shitting out liu sha bao.
Cannot be too sweet.
I feel like I've ever eaten some liu sha bao that they are so sweet right,
it loses the salted egg feeling.
And I like that it is grainy,
because liu sha bao must be grainy one,
you cannot have one nice custard texture,
then, that one not nice already.
Must have enough sauce to flow out,
when you eat.
And cannot be curdled up together,
you know sticky sticky one.
then, the bao outside must be soft,
yet firm enough to hold!
Ooo!
It's orange.
I confirm got eat this before.
Wah! Damn orange.
It's so shiny.
It reminds me of you know Filet-O-Fish bun.
Ohhh, like very smooth right.
It looks like you know Chinese New Years, you want to go visiting.
And, I like that it is very small.
Because if not, it will be very mesy.
I feel people will scold me if they see how I eat.
But normally, I will let the thing come out first.
Because you know when you eat right,
I want to have each piece to have exact amount of sauce.
I can see that it is coming out already.
Like, "Xenia, I am coming out!"
Ohhh! Wahhh! Ooo!
It definitely flow out.
Wah, smells amazing.
I think this sauce is really quite oily,
you can clearly see the separation.
Mmmm.
So the smell of the salted egg is not very strong,
but the taste is very strong.
It's not too coarse
but when you eat right,
there's these very fine grains that linger on top of your tongue.
The salted egg can be a little bit punchier,
right now it's just creamy
and there's not much salted egg yolk taste.
The bao doesn't taste fresh.
To me, I don't think it's amazing.
Xenia: [gasp] Jia Hui: I'm sorry but it didn't blow my mind.
Xenia to bao: Ssh I know it hurts.
But I loooove you!
This one is huge!
Oooooh
It's really very big ah.
Wah I feel like this one will have a lot of sauce.
Damn oily eh, you see, you see.
There's a lot of bun as compared to the filling.
The custard is a very pale yellow.
Wah tastes very different from just now.
Too gao (thick) already the filling.
Maybe, they wanted the filling to be more flavourful
and then to have more bun right, but it doesn't work that way.
Whatever hits your taste buds first is that filling
which is too sweet,
and then you eat the bun and it's damn plain.
Doesn't complement each other well.
Wah but it's damn sweet eh the inside tastes like condensed milk.
But I like this kind of taste la.
Not gonna lie.
I feel like the bun is a little bit dry as well.
So when you bite into it it's not really fluffy, like how baos are like.
Is it Halloween?
Xenia: It's confirm some charcoal salted egg Jia Hui: Yesss, I was thinking charcoal
But it's nice leh I feel that they put in effort.
This one still has grooves.
I have no idea why charcoal and salted egg yolk go so well together.
I don't know if it's just the colour or what.
Katie [singing]: Black and yellow, black and yellow
Ya siaaaa like the bees
Wa eh damn nice eh
I'm hoping the bun tastes different, I mean 'cause grey colour.
Just to show you how much there is.
It's very gooey.
Yah
Like it sticks to the top of your...what is this called...
Your mouth?
Ya it sticks here!
I like this one, I think.
I like this one too, the bao is also quite soft,
The salted egg taste is much stronger.
To me it's okay leh.
I think the flavour profile is nice eh.
It hits sweet and savoury, it's slightly grainy.
For the taste of the custard itself, the taste was a lot more balanced
compared to the previous ones.
But not bad, I feel like the bun quite soft.
It's very fluffy, yet not soggy.
I just wish there was more, like it was bigger.
This is so familiar
I think this dolly paper
makes it feel very homemade, like your ah ma made it, you know.
This looks exactly like the one I get from Swee Choon normally.
But mine bigger than yours.
That means it's handmade ;)
Both: Ooooooh
And because it's so small right, the filling really gao gao (very thick).
Very xiang (fragrant) eh.
Jia Hui: Oooh, yes Xenia: I don't know why but it smells like Chinese New Year.
This is my favourite.
Although you get a lot of zhap (filling) right,
but then like,
too much then I feel like I'm (just) eating this custard.
The salted egg just bam (punches) you, you know.
There's a big grain of salted egg yolk eh.
Ya, it's damn different from the rest.
It's like the person making this bun right, is purposely telling you
Eh I use the real salted egg
don't say I use custard hor
I give you chunks of real salted egg orh
It's very buttery,
very heavy,
but it's more on the savoury side,
there's not much sugar to it.
It has this added taste.
You know the egg roll, the love letter?
It can get quite jelak after a while
but if you like salted egg right,
then you will like this.
I appreciate the bigger grains
because it adds texture
and has a nicer mouthfeel when you eat.
Both: Wow!
It's so cute.
It has sesame seeds on top.
They purposely make it so small that you can finish it in one bite.
Hah!
It's a nice vibrant colour,
The consistency is thick,
and it's not super watery.
It smells like a mantou.
Is this liu sha bao?
Really ah.
The texture is there, a bit of grainy texture
and it's quite velvety and luscious,
but then,
it is not sweet, it is not savoury,
there's no salted egg yolk taste,
there's no milky taste,
it tastes like rice.
Wah this is a very accurate description.
One thing I like about it is
the ratio, the bun to filling ratio.
and that it's very small,
it is convenient to eat, it is not messy at all.
This liu sha bao right,
is like when we are going through our teenage years,
you going through identity crisis,
you don't know who you are,
do I want to be a sesame bun or do I want to be a liu sha bao?
If nothingness had a taste right, this would be it.
Oh no!
Savage.
Wah so competitive one.
Of course lah!
I Eatbook girl eh
Must at least get one correct!
NTUC!
The grey one!
I would imagine it's frozen, right,
so the filling wouldn't be that great,
it wouldn't be grainy,
it would be more custard-y,
smooth and creamy,
like the fake salted egg filling lah.
NTUC
Surprisingly good, yes.
Wah I'm really impressed that NTUC beat Crystal Jade,
beat Tung Lok, beat Victor's Kitchen
and all these have long queues,
especially Victor's Kitchen.
I know it's mainstream, I know it's basic, but
Crystal Jade!
It's popular for a reason lah.
It is very simple, yet delightful lor.
I'm surprised by Yi Dian Xin,
for a coffee shop dim sum place right,
they really made it very gao (thick) eh.
