AI and deepfakes: the future of fake news

Just like they put these words into Obama's mouth.
Luckily; this time we're not looking at an enemy.
This fake Obama clip aims to warn people about deepfakes technologies.
Because these technologies are increasingly becoming widespread.
So, how did we get here?
Year 1984.
This is the pre-Photoshop era.
We're at a computer lab in Boston.
Now, let's visit Hollywood, Los Angeles.
How do you think JFK, who was assassinated in 1963
shook hands with Tom Hanks
in the 1994 movie "Forrest Gump?"
Or what is Peter Cushing who passed away in 1994
doing in 2016 movie "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story?"
Making these Hollywood scenes
requires big studios
a couple of million dollars
and hundreds of staff.
Well, with the help of AI
a Reddit user manipulated this scene from the Matrix
by swapping Neo's face with Nicolas Cage's
in just a few hours.
It all started when a Google engineer developed
a new machine learning technique
called generative adversarial networks in 2016.
Shortly after this new technique was introduced
free deepfake applications built on that approach
began to appear on the Internet.
These applications enabled random Internet users
without sophisticated technical knowledge to manipulate videos
- the work that in the past only large Hollywood studios were capable of doing.
There is an AI technique called generative adversarial networks.
This technique involves two neural networks training each other.
One of them is working to create fakes.
And the other one is trying to detect them.
The two networks get better at what they do
by providing one another with constant feedbacks.
So, the system within itself gradually improves the ability to create fakes.
We don't know whether this technology will have any limits.
It's possible to create very sophisticated
fakes that even experts can't detect.
The two networks compete with each other
and there is no theoretical guarantee that
the one trying to detect fakes will be able to
catch the other one creating them.
Let's say you're now looking at shadow angles
while investigating whether a picture is fabricated or not.
This won't be an option for you anymore
when it comes to AI-supported fakes.
From education to art
and to interactivity and automation
scientists believe this technology will have many beneficial uses.
But if misused
this technology might well do more harm than good.
Early deepfake videos were weaponized to humiliate women.
Ordinary women's faces were deepfaked into porn videos
and these videos were shared on the Internet.
In February 2018
Reddit and Pornhub removed hundreds of deepfake videos
from their platforms.
The only thing those who create deepfake videos need is your pictures.
In a world where more than a million selfies are being shared online each day
this is an easy task for them.
Politicians who spend their whole careers in front of cameras are also easy targets.
Yes, it's possible to create fake videos by using their faces.
But what about audio?
With AI, that's not a problem either.
It's true that this technology can be weaponized to harm politicians.
But it also would give them the opportunity to denounce video or audio
proving their wrongdoings as deepfakes.
Deepfake technologies are not perfect yet.
Deepfaked video and audio still leave some defects behind.
But there is no question that the longer machines are trained the better results they'll produce.
The work of conversion is still leaving behind some marks.
Just like flavored beverages.
Let's say we have soda with orange flavor
And at the same time we have orange juice with gas mixture.
So we have an authentic orange juice and an artificial orange juice.
They can make it taste like authentic orange juice by using advanced technologies.
But it will still have some defects.
If we examine the artificial orange juice
we can detect chemicals in it that authentic orange juice doesn't have.
We can also notice some missing ingredients in it that authentic one does have.
Likewise, because this technology is not perfect yet
the manipulated videos created by swapping one person's face with another one's
still have some deficiencies and errors that careful eyes can detect.
We have people who create fake content. In our case they produce deepfakes.
On the other hand, we have people who want to detect them.
Those creating fake content will use more sophisticated techniques and approaches
and therefore will get better results.
And the ones trying to detect these fakes will also develop better ways to catch more sophisticated fakes.
For instance, if we don't have antivirus softwares that can detect viruses
and if this is a security breach or a threat for us as a country
the same goes for deepfakes too. We'll be defenseless.
Lawmakers in the US asked the intelligence community
for an official deepfakes assessment in September 2018.
Politicians warn that deepfakes technologies could be used
to manipulate 2020 US elections.
It's known that Pentagon is working with a group of researchers
to develop ways to detect deepfake videos.
Now, the question is: to what extent are digital forensic experts in Turkey aware of this threat?
We can't talk about digital forensics
without touching law and legislations
as they all go hand in hand.
A digital forensic expert has to be familiar with legislations.
There is only one clause in Turkish law regarding fake news.
It punishes those who spread false information during war times
for putting the nation's security at risk.
Because spreading false information is not punished by the law
except during war times, digital forensic experts are not so interested in this.
We need to be ready when this technology reaches the point
where we can't tell whether a change has been made [in video and audio.]
Because then this technology will be so advanced.
Copying facial expressions and reanimating them is a deep learning process
and machines will get much better at it in time.
Manipulated video might leave behind some
inconsistencies, deductions, and instabilities.
In audio, there might be some blank spots and noises.
That said, in the future, when render technologies become much better
it will be extremely difficult to detect those anomalies.
Experts should work with the academia and the state
and invest in this area. If not financially, at least intellectually.
That would be an important step.
In the near past

If we don't act against this new threat now
AI-supported fake videos will blur the line even further.

Mirage Mastery Guide | Apex Legends - Duration: 5:24.
"Faking them out with a Decoy."
"Why are all of your freaking things 200 IQ?
All of your decoys are literally 300 IQ."
I wouldn't blame you for thinking that Mirage isn't one of the stronger Legends in the
Apex.
I mean, what does he really do for the team, right?
He can't teleport you out like Wraith.
He can't protect you like Gibraltar.
He can't help you escape or engage like Bangalore and Pathfinder.
So why bother playing him?
One of the amazing things about this game is that, you constantly find yourself in situations
where, had you been running a different Legend, you couldn't have won that particular engagement.
Well, that is as long as you play to your own strength.
The two staples of a good Mirage player, in my opinion, come down to Information and Opportunity.
So to ensure that you make best use of the Information you gather and seize every Opportunity
you find- Let's talk about How to Get Good, at Mirage.
Before we get to the more obvious things like how to use his Decoy, let's talk about his
invisibility.
Spoiler alert in case you didn't notice yet: You are not actually invisible.
So don't treat your ultimate like you would use vanish in World of Warcraft.
I'm bringing this up first because this is something that's very easy to mess up,
and probably one of the biggest mistakes new Mirage players make.
Vanishing act is not going to be useful when you play against a competent squad and use
it right in front of their face.
Summoning a bunch of decoys can definitely give you a couple seconds to react, but make
sure you run towards something that can block line of sight.
Well, that's if you are already in a fire fight.
If the enemy team hasn't noticed you yet, you can use it preemptively and have your
team engage without you.
It's easy to spot you if an enemy goes out of their way to do so, but if they have no
reason to feel like they have to be cautious for it, then they're not gonna look for
you.
So if you use it as an escape tool, make sure you break line of sight as quickly as possible
and get into hiding.
If you use it to engage on an enemy, don't just pop it in front of their face.
It's best used before they even realize that your squad has a Mirage player on their
team.
Okay.
Now let's talk about Decoys.
This is gonna sound a bit crude but, considering how popular this game is, you are going to
come across a lot very oblivious players.
Which means that Decoy is far more of a useful ability than you might think initially.
Most of the use cases for this ability are actually fairly straight forward.
Let it run down a long path that you expect to potentially be attacked from.
Let it check for an ambush on air drops.
And pop it down open fields to see if anyone is camping on high ground.
Seriously, while traversing the map, think about all the places that you assume somebody
could be hiding in.
If you were playing like a coward, where would you sit?
Probably somewhere that's difficult to see while still having line of sight to open fields
and zone entrances.
A lot of people will shoot on sight and if they hit your Decoy, they're immediately
giving away their position as well as allowing you to see how far they are away in meters.
That's what I mean by gathering information.
Knowing where the enemies are ahead of committing to a fire fight allows you to come up with
a plan.
Do we wanna take that fight out in the open, go for a zipline play, or do we just back
off and find another way around?
Mirage allows you to gather information in a way that no other Legend does.
Making decisions that otherwise come at the risk of your life, or a bunch of resources
that you would've rather used in the late game.
But obviously, if we are talking about the most blatant use of Decoy, you can use it
in 1 v 1 situations to bamboozle the heck out of a stressed out enemy looking to finish
you off.
Enemies often react in very panicking fashion when realizing that they just shot a decoy.
So if you happen to be the flanking type and have steady aim, that's something you might
be able to take advantage of.
When it comes to general tips you might or might not already know-
You can use your decoy while either healing or reloading.
It does not cancel any other action.
When using your ultimate, the decoys you summon will mimic your pose.
That means that if you are crouching, so will they.
And always remember that the decoy runs from your direction.
If you send one out from a stationary position, your enemies will know where to look for you.
So stay mobile.
Pro Tip: If you're not sure where an enemy is that attacks you from range, you can send
your decoy into any source of damage to find out where they are.
That includes gas clouds, thermite grenades and even airstrikes.
And when it comes to weapons of choice; It depends on how you want to take your engagements.
You can use your Decoy to get people to show themselves and then pop them with a sniper.
If you want to be on the flank and get in close, consider the Peacekeeper.
My personal favorite loadout is the Hemlock in single fire mode and the Wingman.
Because I just prefer taking mid range battles to then close in on the enemies and finish
them off.
But I definitely wouldn't scoff at an R-301 either.
Assuming you want to go for a sneaky, flanking kinda playstyle, try to always have some Arc
Stars on you.
They instantly shred armor and if the enemies don't expect you, it's a great way to
engage a fight.
The whole, "Using your Decoy while mid air" thing you can do at the start- I don't really
find it all that useful.
Sure, you can stress out some inexperienced players who think you landed nearby, but if
you're not close to them, it's not like you can take advantage of it.
And if you land together with a competent squad on the other end, you're only going
to alert them anyway.
Which is not necessarily a good thing.
And with all of these Mirage Tips out of the way, I guess we're at the end of the video.
I know that he has a bit of a reputation for not being very team compatible, but whether
I queue in solo or play with my friends, as long as I know what I'm good at, I've
never had a problem helping my teams out.

hello and welcome to this episode of sewing is hard with American Duchess I
am Abby and I'm Lauren and today we're talking about skirts. 1830s skirts. Woo! 1830s
skirts! So Abby what is the biggest takeaway that you would have from making
your 1830s skirt? I don't know that's a good question actually cuz they're not... I
think it's always something we talk about a lot people want to overthink
1830 skirts but there's actually not that much to think about
they're just rectangular panels 1820s skirts and 1810s skirts they're gored
and they're shaped, a little confusing. Post 1830s you get back into gores, you get
into some weird stuff just a few decades later, but 1830s is the return of
simplicity and normalcy when it comes to skirts. And very full skirts to, our
panels were about 56 inches wide each and we did two and a half so
mathematically that's about 137.5 inches in circumference. And that is a
big skirt you guys! It's a lot of skirt. Looking at work woman's guide it says that if
it's a very clinging material or thin material you're gonna need to use more
to get the same effect, but if it's a stiffer hand you can use a little bit
less
Now something that I think is really important that we both learned is the
length of the skirt in the 1830s. It had to be just slightly above the ankle-ish.
You don't want it too long because it really does mess with the portion of it.
It's like this little fairy princess proportion... Like like a doll... yeah I
actually had to shorten my skirt. So this is my little mess-up her. I put the hem
in and then I realized that was too long so I rehemmed it again. Double the work,
double the fun! I also still had it too long because it
was coming down over my corded petticoats and then sort of collapsing
at the bottom because it needs to be right about the same length as the
corded petticoat and the organdy petticoat that I wore underneath.
Now something else that's really important about 1830s skirts is the hem facing on
the skirt and how stiff and how deep it
is. So how why did you make your hem faceing?
Well, mine I did in organdy and it was about 11 inches wide and that was
not wide enough for mine because my silk was kind of lightweight. When you look at
fashion plates you see the line is pretty much up to the knees and I didn't
think that was necessary and I was wrong. Now yours wasn't. No, my silk taffeta has
a firmer hand to it. So, I actually did four inches of him facing also in
cotton organdy and the reason I did this in work woman's guide she when she talks
about facing the skirt she actually says the height of the person can also be
affected because if you have that stitch line so high up it can cut the body and
I am very short legged and so I always err on the side of enlongating my
lower half. Now the original gown it's made of lutestring. Lutestring is plain
weave silk that's been gummed and that gum reactivated with the steam and that
textile is like paper. And this original gown which I think is a little bit
earlier than the 1830s I think it's mid to late 1820s it still has a facing in
it and it's a bit of a weird one to be perfectly honest but it's still
interesting so you can see the brown plain woven textile either a linen or a
cotton has been put into this hem of the skirt and they've attached it with very
small running stitches just about an eighth of an inch from the top here.
I did my down skirt openings in kind of a weird stupid way. No, I wouldn't say stupid...
In the work woman's guide it described a wrap front closing bodice having a drop front skirt, so it's
all sewn together in the back but then you have this sort of like round gown
thing and that's what I tried to make it didn't really work at all so what I
ended up doing was stitching the waistband into the bodice like up
underneath there and and then finagling the skirt to where it would wrap over
and I had this whole system of hooks. I don't know how accurate that was but it
seems like something that 1830 seamstresses also would have come up
agains. Trying to make the front closing bodice. So, with a back closing down and a
back closing skirt you need to put a slit in there and it needs to be about
7 to 12 inches so that way you have enough room to pull a skirt on over
everything or over your head and it doesn't get caught. You're gonna hem it up and
just make sure you put some tacking stitches at the bottom of that slit to
help reinforce it.
Originally I did my skirt on a waistband just like the original gown. That proved
a little bit problematic the original gown at the center back it has a tacking
stitch right about there but I found that I had to sew it all the way along
to get my waistband to not gap between the bodice and the skirt. I turned my top
over I just pinked it and I did stroke gathers here. So the waistband of the
gown it has been top stitched to the bodice and the skirt has been whip
stitched right sides together and I left it raw on the inside I don't recommend
this but you can see I pinked one part of the waistband and then the
bodice I left some seam allowance and just quickly, very coarsely, overcast it
over the raw edge and you can see this the waistband itself I didn't actually
even bother to pink underneath
Pocket Slits! Pocket Slits! 1830s dresses do have them just like 18th century
dresses do. I know right guys isn't that awesome! There is an assumption that
detachable pockets like you see in the 18th century, weren't worn anymore
because reticules came into fashion but in the 1830s they were worn there are
patterns for them in workwoman's guide. Walk around in your 1830s gown and be
like oh my gosh that gown is so cute! Like thanks, it has pockets! So we both put them
in mine has them on both sides. Mine's just on the one side, my right-hand side
because I only ever wear one pocket. I only have one pocket and yet I always
put two pocket slits in. I dunno. Maybe it's because you wanna work on looking real cool, like thanks it has pockets! One's not a real pocket!
Try to see if you can line up a seam so you don't have to cut into the fabric that's obviously the best. Yeah
definitely. But if you do have to cut into the fabric cut in about 7 to 12
inches hem it up very, very carefully put a few tacking stitches. Reinforce the ends there.
And you'll be fine and just keep in mind that you want the pocket slit to line up
with basically right where your underarm is because there's nothing worse than
having a pocket slit that's like on your butt. Yeah you're trying to reach back there
and like right there. Alright guys well that is it for 1830 skirts really

just trying to browse the Internet then on top of that I type pretty fast or
whatever and so like my typing side was not matching the laptop like my laptop
couldn't keep up with my typing y'all what in the world so in the beginning of
the video you saw that my new low weigh-in is 175
I'm so happy and so grateful for hitting that number y'all I know the best is yet
to come though like we ain't stopping there so I buckled down and got serious
about keto around November 2018 y'all you know um well if you remember my starting
weight at that time was 190 my highest weight in like starting keto y'all was
around 212 pounds 214 pounds so like when I had got close to that like 200
pounds I was like you know we need to dabble back into keto I think all of
us kind of like have this number where we know we've been eating too much and
like right now 190 is that amount for me because it lets me know that I'm Way too
close to 200 and we're not trying to do that again y'all however I feel so happy
right now y'all being at 175 like I feel better like in my opinion I look better
like like I said I know the best is yet to come could you know you girl trying
to get some ABS but y'all I literally feel so good yes y'all we love the
benefit of how keto allows us to lose weight but the way it makes me feel
y'all like I'm literally such a different person like I'm so bubbly I'm
so happy like I love this side of me and then y'all it's so funny because even my
mother y'all she she joked about this like before I got serious with keto and
she would be like um are you back on your diet because even she knows like
when I'm not on my diet versus when I'm on my diet because when I'm eating a
whole bunch of carbs y'all I can be very very cranky like not playing any games
like I'm a completely different person but like on keto y'all I'm literally
such a happy person like I'm so bubbly I even when I watch my videos I'd be like
dang girl like calm down sometimes cuz sometimes I feel like I'm just so
energetic that even I scare myself I know that keto isn't like ideal for
everybody but like I really did want to like shout it from the rooftop to
everyone be like"Join Keto... Join Keto" cuz it's so freakin awesome
I know I feel so lame y'all but that's literally how I feel like you know well
you have some good news you want to share with everybody not only is keto
allowing me to lose weight and just like mentally making me
feel better y'all but like I feel like I've met some great people on here y'all
and I'm so so happy like I would have never met y'all I am so so thankful to
