MY NEW "EDIT BAE" NAS - Synology DS916+ Review - Duration: 7:25.
I made the switch to full 4K video - both for desktop tutorials and on-camera videos
- back at the end of 2016.
Between the higher resolution and bitrates and the higher bulk of b-roll being shot with
the increase in production value for the channel, my typical "Store everything locally and
archive to little NAS drives as I go" strategy couldn't keep up with my storage needs.
I needed a solution.
A bigger drive?
Not enough.
A PETABYTE SERVER?
I wish.
A realistic solution was needed.
I needed a DiskStation.
I'm EposVox, here to make tech easier and more fun today reviewing the Synology DiskStation
DS916+ - a 4-bay (plus expansion capability) NAS with a quad core Intel Pentium processor
and 8GB of RAM.
This is a beast of a NAS on its own, and I've got mine loaded up with 4 6TB IronWolf hard
drives, which were generously donated by Seagate to sponsor this video.
Synology has sponsored tutorial content on my channel in the past, but is not paying
for this review, seeing it before it's posted or anything like that.
This is still a standard review for me.
For my configuration, I decided to go with Synology's hybrid raid system and Btrfs,
leaving me with roughly 15TB of usable space to store all that sexy b-roll and voiceover.
This thing has been serving me well for a few months now.
I reviewed a Synology NAS in the past, and the physical overview is about the same.
Great metal chassis, glossy, dust-clinging removeable front panel, some nice rubber feet
on the bottom.
The front also features a status indicator LED, indicator LEDs for each of the 4 drive
bays, a USB 3.0 port, and the power button and power LED.
Over around the back, we've got a Kensington lock, power input, eSATA connection for the
optional expansion dock, dual gigabit ethernet ports, and two more USB 3.0 ports.
You can hook up external hard drives or flash drives to these ports to add additional storage
or run backups.
This is an important part of my workflow, as my main working video data resides on the
internal drives, and my finished projects footage archive gets moved to external drives.
The NAS's "killer feature" is the crazy powerful Synology DSM (or DiskStation Manager)
operating system that runs on it.
This is like a full-fledged computer operating system with a package manager, control panel,
and everything.
This lets you install your own line of apps to meet your needs - for media servers, email
servers, wikis, and so on.
I love this software, it's the same setup used to configure my router from Synology
that I reviewed previously.
It makes managing the NAS so much easier.
Not only can I manage the file system, apps, network traffic, and so on - but there's
even a special health monitoring tool built-in just for these IronWolf and IronWolf Pro hard
drives.
This lets me view power-on time of the drives, temperatures, SMART status, and so on.
Then you can run a dedicated IronWolf health scan to test each drive, spitting out an output
code to use to diagnose problems if something is wrong with the hard drives.
The Seagate IronWolf Pro drives also come with 2 year complimentary Rescue Data Recovery
Service, which is great reassurance that your data is safe.
One more detail I wanted to mention is that this NAS is running a Pentium Processor and
isn't vulnerable to the Atom SOC burnout issues that some NAS devices started experiencing
last year.
I have the DS916+ hooked up with both ethernet jacks to my big Netgear switch in my server
rack from my $15 Server Rack Adventures videos and it acts as my Edit Drive.
All of my active footage for ongoing shoots gets stored on here - currently occupying
9.1TB.
I also store my video resources such as background music, sound effects, intros, lower-thirds,
and so on here, too.
I have folders divided up between "Active Projects," for projects I'm working on,
"Finished Projects," for projects that I've edited and uploaded but haven't backed
up to Amazon Cloud Drive yet, "Vlog Storage" to keep our vlog channel stuff separate from
this channel's footage, and a few other folders.
I also sync my phone's photos and videos to a "Mobile Backups" folder via Synology's
DS file app from a sponsored tutorial I released a couple weeks ago, too.

I also have 2 USB 3.0 drives connected to the DS916+.
One contains my Software archive along with some scrap files I haven't sorted yet, and
the other contains my Footage Archive for video projects and my YouTube uploaded final
export archive.
Sadly, this isn't a complete archive, as I lost quite a lot of footage last year, hence
my locking down on archiving and backing up data.
This all gets shared over my network.
All local computers can access it, which is incredibly handy.
Better yet, I actually edit from this NAS!
Yes, all of my active projects STAY on this NAS and I edit straight from it.
The network transfer speeds I get of over 100 megaBYTES per second make this super easy.
I usually use 1/2 or 1/4 quality preview playback anyway, and I almost never experience any
hiccups scrubbing through the timeline in Premiere or playing back edits.
I use a local SSD as a cache and scratch disk to speed up edits and renders, and the combined
performance allow me to smoothly and quickly edit and render videos with no performance
loss, while taking full advantage of the 15TB available on the NAS.
Honestly, I've been blown away by the performance here.
I've experienced no slowdowns at all.
Every once in a while a certain effect may slow down timeline playback, or it just has
a brief hiccup - but it smooths out quickly, and these things happen to local editing,
too.
I just wish other editing platforms had the same optimizations as Premiere does, because
editing over the network with Vegas Pro and Cyberlink Powerdirector was a very slow and
unenjoyable experience.
I haven't tried to use Resolve over the network just yet.
The NAS doesn't get too loud, and doesn't beep at me anywhere near as much as my QNAP
NAS does.
Drive swapping is simple and toolless - like REALLY simple - and easy to set up using Synology's
QuickConnect "find my NAS" URL system.
Then mounting the network shares in Windows takes only a couple of clicks and you're
off to the races.
I guess it's worth reiterating that this doesn't have to be an editing or production
NAS by any standpoint, that's just my use case.
With the plethora of available configuration settings, packages to install, and so on,
it can do just about anything.
Even has a Plex server, or their own "Video Station" alternative.
Plex performs alright.
It choked on a full 10-bit HEVC file, but did fine playing back normal 720p and 1080p
movie files.

On the whole, this is a badass little NAS, and the Seagate IronWolf Pro drives give me
tons of space with the security and reliability to keep my data safe.
Plus the IronWolf Health tool is pretty handy, too.
This has been a great experience moving my video footage off of my main rig onto a more
centralized network location, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have set this up.
This has significantly boosted my productivity this year, while still keeping up with my
4k video production needs.
Now I just want to look into getting the expansion bay and filling it up too, haha.

Best Google Secrets and Easter Eggs - Duration: 10:41.
Hey how's it going guys, I'm ThioJoe.
Now I'm sure most of us use Google pretty much every single day, for searches, email,
or whatever.
But what you may not know are all sorts of hidden features and easter eggs built into
Google that are only accessible by searching certain phrases.
Some of them are just for fun, and others are a little bit useful.
There are a whole bunch of these, but I'm going to go over what I think are the coolest
ones out there.
So let's get started.
First let's start off with some hidden games that Google has made.
We can begin by just typing in "solitaire" and pressing enter to search.
At the top of the results you'll see a knowledge graph box that says "Click to Play" and if
you do, no surprise, it brings up a game of solitaire.
And you can choose either medium or hard difficulty, and just play it.
Pretty neat.
The second game you can play is tic tac toe, and it's the same way, just type in tic tac
toe, and you can choose either easy, medium, or impossible difficulty.
With impossible, well, it's impossible to win, you can only tie.
The third game is Pacman, a classic.
And this one is kinda funny because it's not the original pacman layout, but it actually
says Google.
I thought that was a nice touch.
For the last game, you actually have to go to Google Images, not the regular search.
Then you type in "Atari Breakout", and it will turn the Google images page and results
into a game of breakout.
You move the cursor at the bottom to control the platform, and bounce the ball to break
all the tiles above.
And as you win each level, it gets faster, and you can see the multiplier at the top
left.
In addition to games, there are a few of what I guess you could describe as "tools", which
I guess might even be useful at times.
The first one is the ability to flip a coin, so you just type in flip a coin, and it will
randomly select heads or tails.
Or if you want a few more options, you can have it roll a die, and it will spit out a
number between 1 and 6.
Then there's another one that's kind of fun, if you just type in "spinner".
It's another number generator, but this time you can have a wheel anywhere between 2 and
20 numbers.
Or if you want to just skip all the animations and pick any random number, you can simply
type in, "random number."
By default it will pick one between 1 and 10, but you can choose any parameters.
Though if you pick one too big it just shows this emoji, that's kinda funny.
So those are all the "tools", and now we can move on to some easter eggs that are basically
just for fun, not useful at all.
If you do a search for "Google in 1998", you'll see that the results page has the really old
Google logo, and a layout that looks a lot different than you're used to.
I'm not sure if that's exactly how it looked back then, but I'm guessing it's pretty close.
One of the funny things is at the bottom, it used to have links to all the old search
engines like Altavista, infoseek, lycos, Yahoo and some others.
Next, another search you can type in is "Super Mario Bros", and in the knowledge graph on
the right, you'll see a question mark box that's blinking.
If you click on that, it just does a little animation and plays the sound effect from
Mario.
In a similar fashion, you can type in "Sonic the hedgehog", and in the same spot this time
you'll see a little picture of sonic.
It's not blinking or anything so it's not that obvious, but you can actually click on
it, and when you do it has him spin and play the sound effect from all the games.
Yet another video game one for anyone who's played Starcraft, is when you type in "Zerg
Rush".
With this it will have a bunch of O's come down from the top of the screen and start
to "eat" the results.
The idea is it's like in Starcraft where you'd just immediately start building zerglings
and attack the opponent.
And you'll see when it's "attacking" the page, there are little health bars.
Another funny thing is if you wait, the O's will move and arrange themselves to say GG.
Moving on, a fun one for the holidays, is to type in "festivus".
And on the left side it will show a festivus pole that extends the length of the page.
And if you don't get that reference, first of all you've been missing out, but it's from
an episode of seinfeld.
It's a made up holiday and instead of putting up a christmas tree, you put up a "festivus
pole" and it's literally just an aluminum pole.
It's a classic, definitely watch it if you haven't seen it.
Next, if you do a search for "recursion", it will suggest the spelling correction of,
recursion.
Wait a minute, isn't that what you just typed in?
Well if you click it, you'll realize that yes, it just puts you in a never ending loop,
which is exactly what recursion means.
Another search you can do is to type in "askew", and as you can probably guess, will show the
results page tilted.
So that one's pretty simple.
Anyone who's been around the internet long enough to remember the HTML "blink" tag, which
for some reason got used way too often back in the day.
Well you can relive that nightmare by doing a search for "Blink HTML", and as you might
expect, it makes the word "blink" do just that anywhere on the page.
Now this next one, I'm sure we've all wanted to know forever.
Turns out Google does indeed know The answer to life, the universe, and everything.
If you type it in, Google will spend 7 and a half million years thinking about it, and
then present you with the answer, which is of course, 42.
And if you have no idea what I'm talking about, it's a reference to The Hitchiker's Guide
to the Galaxy Books and or movie.
Also classics you'll want to check out.
Next up we can go over one that isn't really search related.
It lets you use Google in alternate languages, including some funny ones.
If you go to the bottom right and hit Settings, Search Settings, then Languages, and show
more, you'll get a big list you can choose from.
Ok, what's so special about that?
Well there are a few notable ones such as, Hacker, which changes all the words on Google
to "l33t speak".
There's also Pirate, which for example changes "I'm feeling lucky" to "I be feelin' lucky".
And there's even klingon, which I have no idea how to read at all.
But you can look through the languages and might find some other neat ones.
So those are a bunch of easter eggs for the main Google Search page, but there are actually
a few for Google Maps as well.
For example, try getting directions from "Snowdon" to "Brecon Beacons", and it will give you
the transit times of varios methods, including by dragon!
Which apparently takes 37 minutes.
And funny enough, they actually show a little easter egg symbol next to that one, I guess
in case someone literally thought you could ride a dragon.
You know there are probably people out there who would.
And similar to that one, you can do directions from "Windsor Castle" to "Buckingham Palace",
and then go to public transporation options.
In this list it will actually give you the option to travel by royal carriage, and it
takes about an hour.

Here's one for those of you out there who are Doctor Who fans, and by the way if you're
not, again you don't know what you're missing.
Anyway, this easter egg takes a few steps but it's worth it.
First go to Google Maps, and go to the address "238 Earl's Court Road, London UK".
Then you go to Google street view, and you should see a tardis down the road, so click
towards that.
Now you're supposed to be able to click near it and directly go inside, but I'm not sure
if that works anymore, though you can still do it another way.
At the bottom left, you'll see a mini map, so expand that and zoom in.
You'll see blue and yellow circles, and the yellow ones represent areas where you can
go inside.
Find the one on the map that is in the same spot as the tardis, click on that, and it
will take you inside.
Now just like in the show, you can actually move around within the whole set just like
regular street view, and explore a bit.
It's kind of tricky to navigate, but you can go up on the catwalks, and walk around the
main console as well.
Pretty neat to check out.
This next one uses a feature in Google Maps street view that you might not have even known
about, so this is kind like a double secret.
If you go to a place in street view, at the top left it will show the date the images
were taken.
But you might not have known that you can click that little clock, and it will give
you the option to go back in time, and see what the street view images looked like in
years past.
So this is already pretty cool, you can compare how things have changed.
But here's the easter egg.
If you look at the Street View guy on the map, you'll see he's changed, and now he has
turned into the character Doc Brown from Back to the Future.
With the wild hair, goggles, lab coat, and he's holding a clock.
And finally, we have not so much an easter egg as it is a hidden feature, is the new
I'm Feeling Lucky button.
As you know, how it used to work was you'd type in a search term, and you could hit that
button and automatically go to the first result without seeing any others.
That ended up becoming obsolete when Google introduced instant search, where it shows
you results as soon as you start typing.
However, the I'm Feeling Lucky button is still there, it just does something different now.
Now-a-days, if you hover over it, it will rotate between a few phrases starting with
"I'm Feeling", whatever.
Clicking it will take you to one of several pre-selected pages on Google, anywhere from
Google Trends to a search for restaurants.
Might be kind of neat to do if you're bored one day.
Though I should point out that you CAN still technically use the I'm Feeling Lucky button
the way it used to work.
To do so, simply click settings on the bottom right, go to Search settings, and select "never
show instant results".
This makes Google behave just like it used to a few years ago, I'm Feeling Lucky button
and all.
So, those are all the cool Google easter eggs I thought you guys might like.
There are lots of others you can look up, but I think these are the best.
Of course there might be new ones later on.

What Tiger Woods' Ex Is Up To These Days - Duration: 3:55.
Cheating scandals are par for the course for celebrities.
But in 2009, the world was shocked to learn that golf champ Tiger Woods was a serial cheater,
who admitted to having numerous affairs while married to Elin Nordegren.
It was devastating, but since then, the Swedish-born former nanny and model has gotten back on
her feet again and is doing better than ever.
With Tiger continuing to make headlines for his off-the-green course, there's no better
time to ask: where is Tiger Woods' ex-wife Elin Nordegren today?
Getting her degree
After attending night classes since 2005, Nordegren graduated from Rollins College in
Winter Park, Florida in 2014, where she received the Outstanding Senior Award in psychology
after earning a 3.96 GPA.
She told the Orlando Sentinel "I want to continue to study and learn, but I am not exactly sure
how yet.
My passion has always been psychology, but my interests continue to broaden."
Nordegren was selected to speak at her graduation, during which she made a few lighthearted jabs
about her divorce from Woods and the media's obsession with the scandal.
"And it was right after I had taken Communication in the Media that I was unexpectedly thrust
into the media limelight.
And I probably should've taken more notes in that class."
Living large
In 2012, Nordegren used part of her reported $100 million divorce settlement to construct
a mansion in North Palm Beach, Florida.
In fact, she actually bought an existing home for $12 million, but had it completely torn
down because it was structurally unsound, though some salvaged parts were donated to
Habitat for Humanity.
The new beach-side home she built in its place has nine bedrooms, mini-golf course, a home
movie theater, and a lavish pool, meaning there's plenty of space for her two children,
Sam and Charlie to grow up.
Holding grudges
Even though Woods cheated on her with multiple women, Nordegren allegedly had a tough time
when he moved on after their divorce.
Case in point: she was allegedly furious when Woods started dating Olympic skier Lindsey
Vonn in 2013.
According to Us Weekly, Nordegren even wanted to restrict Tiger's visitation rights with
their children because she didn't want them around Vonn.
And the bad blood continued even after Vonn and Woods broke up.
In 2016, Page Six reported that event organizers were asked to seat Vonn and Nordegren apart
at a party during the Kentucky Derby.
A source told the tabloid "the staff was being told over a walkie-talkie that Lindsey was
on her way over and must be put in a different area from Elin."
That didn't keep them from snapping a selfie together, though, so...who knows?
Looking for love
Woods isn't the only one who's moved on.
In 2013, Nordegren began dating billionaire coal tycoon Chris Cline, a relationship that's
been on-again, off-again ever since.
In 2016, during one of those off-again periods with Cline, she also became linked to musician
Gavin Rossdale — the cheating, former husband of Gwen Stefani.
That union has generated plenty of tabloid headlines, but at this point, she's pretty
used to that.
Making up
Woods, a serial cheater who admitted he had affairs with numerous women while married
to Nordegren, now calls his ex-wife his "best friend," according to the Huffington Post.
Woods told Stephen Colbert, "It becomes two simple things, okay?
We have Sam and we have Charlie.
And we love them so much that we are going to whatever it takes to make that work.
That's how it happened."
"I've talked to her about so many different things
and she does the same thing with me.
We go back and forth.
And we communicate so much better now it's incredible."
And it seems Nordegren feels the same.
She told People in 2014 "I have moved on and I am in a good place.
My relationship with Tiger is centered around our children and we are doing really good
— we really are — and I am so happy that this is the case, he is a great father."

What's Up for June?
Plan a planet party and compare Saturn and Jupiter.
Hello and welcome! I'm Jane Houston Jones from
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.
Why not meet at midnight for a planet party,
when you'll be able to see both Saturn and Jupiter in the sky
at the same time?
The best time to try will be a few hours after
Saturn rises at sunset
and before Jupiter sets.
Jupiter sets at 3 a.m. at the beginning of June
and 1 a.m. by the end of the month.
To see cool details, you'll need a telescope.
Saturn reaches opposition on June 14
when Saturn, Earth and the Sun are all in a straight line
with Earth in the middle.
Opposition provides the best and closest views of Saturn
and several of its brightest moons.
If you just see one, that's Titan.
Titan is 50% larger than our own moon.
It orbits Saturn about every 16 Earth days.
Our moon takes 27.3 days to orbit Earth.
Through a telescope you'll be able to
compare the cloud bands on both Saturn and Jupiter.
Saturn's cloud bands are fainter than the bands of Jupiter.
On Saturn you'll see
delicate shades of cream and butterscotch,
while Jupiter's bands are shades of white, rust and ochre.
A telescope will also show
Saturn's rings tilted toward Earth about as wide as they get:
26.6 degrees.
The sunlight reflecting off the ring particles
makes the rings look even brighter.
You'll also have a ring-side view of the Cassini division,
discovered in 1675 by Giovanni Domenico Cassini,
namesake of NASA's Cassini spacecraft.
The spacecraft has been orbiting Saturn since 2004.
Cassini is on a trajectory that will eventually
plunge into Saturn's atmosphere
and end Cassini's mission on September 15, 2017.
NASA's Juno mission recently completed
its sixth Jupiter flyby.
Through binoculars Jupiter's four Galilean moons --
Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto -- are easy to see.
