For "Story of Echizen Pottery", the pottery exhibition
which was started from January 13th、2017,
12 potters from Fukui exhibited their pieces.
The start of this exhibition was that
we made the calendar of the potters.
Fukui Kougeisha Craft Center,
we served as a bridge between those who made the calendar and the potters,
and it was the start of the exhibition.
There was a simple question from some people that
how the potters were chosen for each month.
I decided the potters for each month
and it has no particular reason for who I chose.
I took the all the photographs in summer.
I see that the photographs have the atmosphere of summer
and everyone is wearing summer clothing.
Therefore, I didn't choose the potters based on seasons and/or months for the calendar.
Mr. Miyoshi has the typical impression of potter which is serious and strict.
I was nervous because it was my first time meeting him
He was actually kind and he taught me many things about pottery.
He is a generous person.
Even from his potteries, I feel his generosity
and a peaceful impression of his personality.
I understand.
The amount of ash coating looks great.
The color of this pottery is greenish or it looks something like bidoro glaze.
The color is amazing.
The first thing that catches visitor's eyes is the color,
so everyone says that "the color is very beautiful".
Mr. Miyoshi is the director of Echizen pottery as well.
He is the person who will keep bringing the whole Echizen pottery scene together.
He has several posts.
He is a friendly person.
He often uses a pottery wheel.
I think that he uses the pottery wheel well.
The potteries which he exhibits for the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition, "Nitten"
tend to have dark image.
It's like near-future science fiction.
Sure.
These are made by Mr. Maeda.
There were sparrows flying around at his studio and it was impressive.
Every year, there are 5 or 6 sparrow nests here.
I saw sparrows flying over Mr. Maeda and I while he was using the pottery wheel.
He makes several different kinds of potteries including tableware.
He makes large ones as well for the japan Fine Arts Exhibition, "Nitten".
I see.
He makes the large ones.
He takes the large ones out to the yard
and I took photographs of them.
I see. That's incredible.
Mr. Kondo is well known for "nejitate" (a coiling technique).
That's right.
That's I've heard about Mr. Kondo
so I asked him to show me the skill of making the nijitate coiling techinique.
That was why I decided to take photographs of Mr. Kondo and his works.
By using the pottery wheel, edges are done round and sharply.
As he adds mold clay,
he gets to make the perfect round edges in the way he wants.
Surprisingly, he is a relaxed person.
He makes potteries with his wife.
He has his own style
so I think that he is a strong-minded person as well.
Oh, he might be.
He looks like the person who would say "anything is fine with me"
but I'm sure that there is a few things that he can never compromise.
These are made by Reiko Koen.
We can tell clearly that she loves arranging flowers.
Some of the potteries have interesting shapes.
We can't tell if we don't look at the potteries from above.
When we look at the potteries from above...
We can see some spirals.
and other patterns with the potteries.
According to Reiko Koen,
these leaf potteries were designed to look like Houttuynia cordata leaves.
I see. Oh, these are Houttuynia cordata leaves.
Yes. You can't tell what these are at a glance.
These are cute.
Yes, they are.
I think they are nice.
He is a tall and well built man,
but he makes the potteries which are quite delicate.
That's right.
The gap between his appearance and what he makes is quite surprising.
Tableware including cups and dishes,
Mr. Kasatsuji uses a pottery wheel well.
Mr. Kasatsuji is a young potter
but he started exhibiting his potteries
for the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition, "Nitten" at an early age.
Therefore, I think that he is the person
who lead future pottery's field in a lot of ways.
These are made by Mr. Fukushima.
This is amazing.
The pottery which has an image of sunset looks dramatic
and it catches people's eyes.
This one, you couldn't tell how this was made.
There is made with an airbrush painting technique that
people spray painting onto their pieces.
Oh, that's what Ithought he used.
Yes, it does look like he used the airbrush painting technique.
I see.
Actually, he did not spray the painting, he carved to make it look like this.
It's amazing!
They are not exhibited here today, but there are pottery of owl series.
And the pottery of owl series are Mr. Fushima's major works.
When I visited his studio, there were many pottery owls.
These pottery owls are famous for his pieces and
they are very cute.
He makes every pottery in a kiln.
He also makes the glazed ones in the kiln as well.
The pieces with inlay, his wife helps making them.
I see.
She carves.
Mr. Tsuchimoto said that he likes sake.
I see.
I think he's good at making sake cups.
We asked him to bring many sake cups for this exhibition.
It looks like people can tell
when the sake cups are made by the people who like drinking sake.
Mr. Sokura looks stylish with his hair permed and everything.
He looks very cool and his appearance doesn't make him look a typical potter
who look very traditional and serious.
He also seems to be a young responsible one as well, so that
I think he will continue carrying on the tradition to future generations.
I also think that he acts as a cordinator for the young ones as well.
It's not here now but, he makes Kappa (folklore) ones as well.
Yes, there are photographs of Kappa (folklore).
When I took those photographs in summer
there were some things look liked like Katorisenko (Mosquito Coil).
I saw Katorisenko (Mosquito Coil)lined up outside and they were cute.
The shape of these potteries are simple.
Speaking of Mr. Sokura, he makes potteries with polka dots pattern.
Since you mentioned it, I realized that every pottery of his has polka dots on it.
That's right,
every time I see these patterns recently, I think of Mr. Sokura.
These are made by Uchiro Oya.
He said that he wants to make formative potteries mainly,
but he also likes making vessels so he makes vessels mainly.
By looking at his potteries,
we can see his personality which is warm.
They are cute.
They are cute.
The vessels that he makes has paintings of animals.
Yes. There are penguins, dolphins and so on.
Shochu (a type of alsohol beverage) Glass has stars
such as the constellation Orion and the Big Dipper.
I see.
I think they are quite romantic
every time I see the potteries like these.
He has the typical impression of potter (he is indeed a potter/he is so a potter/strict)
but he is actually a friendly person.
I see.
He uses a kiln.
For this exhibition,
there are many potters who use kilns.
Yes, there are many of them for this exhibition.
That's right.
This is the first time for this many potters
who use kilns were gathered for an exhibition.
This is very cute.
Yes.
This is like a small greyish jar.
That's right.
These are made by Shimizu.
His studio is far away from Fukui City.
That's right. His studio in the south part of Fukui Prefecture.
He uses original glaze which has metallic color.
When people look at these potteries with the metalic color glaze,
it's hard for them tell what they are.
At first, everyone does not think that these are potteries.
Everyone says "what is this?".
There are several different colors.
That's right.
This is yellowish.
Yes, this is yellowish.
This is blue.
That's right.
There are black and blue.
Yes, this is interesting.
Mr. Shimizu's potteries were the most difficult one for me to take photographs.
Yes, I'm sure.
These potteries, yes, they are very memorable.
I understand.
Visitors tell me sometimes that
simply making potteries in general is amazing.
Because we are from Fukui
so we would like to support the potters from Fukui.
Moreover, the potters for the exhibition are chosen equally
and some young ones are famous ones.
Therefore, people say that
we have made such a great exhibition.
What did you think about the potters by actually interacting them?
It was fun.
I see.
Yes. I met the potters and they were interesting.
At first, I was quite nervous.
That's right. It was first time for you to meet the potters.
It was my first time meeting them.
Moreover, I had this image of potters that they must be serious and they're difficult to talk to.
That's what I was worried about.
When I talked to them,
they were actually nice and friendly.
They actually participated in the photo shoot nicely.
I feel that the studio is unusual place.
The atmosphere is different from daily life.
The time seems to be passing by differently in the studio.
