Waching daily Jun 27 2017

I decided to become a teacher because it was inspiring to me for the fact that I had teachers

who were able to make an impact on my life and I feel like I wanted to be able to do

that with some students myself.

I feel that getting a master's degree will help you to apply techniques and theories

to students' education that you didn't know was possible before.

My name is Todd Boyer and I'm a teacher at McClure High School.

I've been teaching for nine years.

I have a wife and two kids.

I have a daughter that's four and a half and a son who is eight months.

I first learned about Capella and their programs with professional development courses.

I'm able to use these professional development courses in the FlexPath program which allows

me to save time and money.

This will also help me to be completed with my master's degree at a quicker speed.

I want to get my master's in education so that I can advance my own career to be a technology

coach or a curriculum coordinator across the district.

It would also allow me to expand on the support that I'm able to give my students in the classroom.

FlexPath is different because it's completely self-paced as opposed to the traditional four

quarters or two semester type of program that most educators have taken themselves or that

we put our own students through.

FlexPath allows you to move through the curriculum quick or slow depending on what your schedule

allows for in your personal life and in your career life.

I feel like it's a great opportunity to achieve what I want to achieve in the timeframe that

I would like to achieve it in.

It's really important to me to have that flexible time so that I can still enjoy doing things

with my family.

One of the benefits of the FlexPath program is you get a 12-week tuition rate where you

can take on as many courses as you can complete in that time comfortably.

You can work as quickly through those courses in 12 weeks as you can or you can work at

a slower pace and it all costs the same rate for 12 weeks.

The master's program is 100% competency-based.

This allows me to learn information on my own time and immediately turn around and use

that in my classroom with my students.

For teachers looking into the FlexPath program, I would recommend it because of its self-paced

nature and the opportunity just to increase your experience, your own knowledge at your

own pace.

FlexPath Movement | Todd: Balancing my schedule - Duration: 2:15.

Hello, everyone.

My name is Todd or Mr. Boyer, as my students call me.

I'm a sponsored FlexPath student in the master's of education program.

Today I wanted to share with you a little bit about how the FlexPath program will allow

me to balance my life, my career, and my education.

First of all, when you look at the FlexPath program, and you compare it to traditional

programs, you'll realize the FlexPath program allows you the opportunity to be flexible.

In traditional programs, you have quarter deadlines.

You have semester deadlines.

All of these things before you can even move on and take the next course.

With the FlexPath program, I'm excited because it's going to allow me to work through the

courses at a pace that I'm comfortable with.

I will be able to be independently driven and choose the times that I want to work when

it works for my schedule.

I work 40 hours a week.

I have a family.

I'm excited to be able to have this flexibility with my schedule.

As I pursue my master's degree, one of the things I'm most excited about with the Flex

Path program, is there are no posts.

There are no forums.

There are no weekly deadlines.

I can work independently through this course, or through these courses, to earn my credit.

I don't have to do all these little assignments.

I can apply my knowledge directly to the assessment for each course.

If I feel the need to learn more about a certain topic before working on the assessment, I

will be provided opportunities to do that, as well.

The FlexPath program is an excellent opportunity for anyone who just cares about their time

and wants to work around their schedule, and have the flexibility to do the things that

you enjoy doing.

I recommend this for all teachers, and I think that it's a great opportunity for anyone looking

to pursue that next level and advance their academic knowledge, and just their overall

experience in education.

That's a little bit about what I wanted to share with you today.

I will be sharing more with you about other topics in the future.

Thanks for joining me and I look forward to talking to you again.

FlexPath Movement | Coni: Leveraging my experience - Duration: 2:11.

Hi everyone, I'm Coni and I am here today to talk a little bit about FlexPath and how

this whole process works.

You know the thing I truly appreciate about FlexPath is it really does let me work at

the pace that is comfortable for me.

Unlike some of those traditional online college courses where you are slotted in a course

for a certain number of weeks, having to do group assignments, or group discussions, FlexPath

is really me just sort of competing with myself to do the coursework.

And for those classes that I have a lot of familiarity with, I've been a working professional

for 30-plus years, I can leverage that knowledge to move through a class a little bit faster

than I would a class, say like, Financial Accounting, that may be something I don't

get a lot of opportunity to spend time doing.

So FlexPath lets me take longer to do those classes that are a little bit of a stretch

for me, and for those classes that are a little bit of a stretch, I have the opportunity to

leverage coaches or tutors, or colleagues, other working professionals or friends who

might be familiar with the topics that I am working on that take a little bit more energy

for me, and work with those folks to help understand the content and be able to get

through that class and then take what I've learned back to my job and be able to use

it and apply it, which is the best part of learning.

It really allows me to leverage those things that I already know and do day to day very

well and move through the coursework quickly.

And for those things I need a little bit of extra time, I can have them, take the time

I need to learn and then be able to bring that back and apply it to the things that

I do every day and just make me a better version of myself while doing my job.

That's it.

Thanks for listening, and we'll talk to you next time.

FlexPath Movement | Kati: Taking the plunge - Duration: 6:04.

What's up guys?

Kati Kleber here.

I wanted to do a short video just to talk to you about my experience with the trial

course with the FlexPath that Capella offers.

So, basically I recently decided to go back for my master's, and I was really excited

about this whole FlexPath way of learning, a way of higher education.

And, when I saw that the MSN, and I'm doing an MSN in nursing education.

When I saw that that was an option with FlexPath I was super intrigued, but I was a little

nervous to really take the plunge into that without really knowing what it's like.

So, they offer this trial course that I tried out.

So, you go to capella.edu/flexpath and they have a free one that you sign up and you can

just do it.

Basically what it does is it shows what the classroom is like, and what your classroom

would look like, and then you get your assessment.

It's competency-based.

So, no exams, but it's competencies and assessments.

So, you get your assessment at the top and it says, kind of like a paper prompt or a

project explanation, or a presentation explanation, whatever the assessment may be and whatever

the form it may be.

And, here's the assessment.

Below it is has context.

So, why are we asking you to do this.

Well, what is the value in us doing this?

Below that is resources, which I loved because it's like, okay, I got the resources right

there within my class that I need.

I don't need to go log into a different database to find research and things, it's all within

my assignment.

And if I have some questions there's a link on the left side for the syllabus, which I

love because the syllabus for every course is very, very important.

And, it's one of the things you cannot lose.

I remember in nursing school, like, holding onto those like protecting them, because it's

like I need to make sure I know this has the deadlines, the expectations, if something

happens then you look here.

So, you're incapable of losing your syllabus, which is wonderful.

But, here's your resources, and then so you do it, you complete it.

Oh, one of the things that, I'm sorry, let me back up.

The most important thing is you set your own deadline.

So you read this, and you say okay this is what's expected of me.

It's very clear.

How long is it going to take me to actually do this?

Do I think I can get it done this week?

If I do a little bit every night do I think I can get this totally done this week?

Or do I need another week?

Or do I have a wedding I'm in this weekend?

Do I have something else I'm doing, or a commitment, or whatever that would prevent me from being

able to do this this week or something?

So you set your own deadline, which I love.

It's not this, you must turn this in by this date.

It's I'm picking the date because I know my schedule, I know my commitments, I know what

I can commit to without being overwhelmed.

So, then you set your deadline.

So when I did my assessment course I'm like, okay, my deadline's tomorrow, or something

like that.

And then I did the trial, and then I submitted it, and actually got feedback, which was kind

of cool.

I saw clearly someone had written that to what I wrote, and it was kind of nice to see

that.

So, you actually get feedback, and I think it says within two business days.

So, I got feedback in two business days from someone, and it showed what it would look

like and how your scored, and what not.

So that was really cool to see on the trial course.

So then I applied, and the application process at Capella was way, way easier than I have

ever done.

I applied to a lot of schools because when I was out of high school I want to a state

school for one major, decided that wasn't for me, and decided to go back to a community

college, got my nursing pre-req's and then went to another school.

So I applied multiple times, and I went to three schools.

So, when I was looking at my master's it was like, what do they ask for?

Your transcripts.

They all want your transcripts.

That makes sense, right?

But getting transcripts from everybody you got to pay for it, you got to get the addresses,

and you're relying on these other institutions to do this, and you're kind of the middle

man, and it's a little frustrating.

I hate applying to schools, y'all.

That made it as smooth as possible because you know what you do it you say, I have transcripts

from these places, here's their addresses, here's my consent for you to get them for

me, and they get your transcripts for you, which is like amazing to me.

So, then I'm assigned an enrollment counselor, what's up Sara?

Sara's my enrollment counselor, and she's super easy to get to.

I've got her number in my phone, no big deal.

And then I also have her email, and she gets back to me really quickly.

If she's not going to be in the office one day I get an email that says, "hey, if you

need something call Mandy."

What's up Mandy?

See, I mean, I haven't even started yet and I know them.

So, I just appreciate the very clear, consistent communication.

I know what's expected of me, and I know my resources, I know exactly who to go to and

where when I have a question, which is really nice.

So yeah.

So, I really also appreciated also that their website is really, really well done.

Very user friendly, about as user friendly is it can be.

I mean, they've been an online school for I don't know how many years, so you can definitely

tell that in the structure of the website, and the way that their resources are.

So, just something I appreciate, and I can definitely tell they put a lot of thought

into the way things are structured.

So, if you want to try a trial course, you go to capella.edu/flexpath.

So you go there, and then you can do your trial course for free.

Check out what I saw, see what you think, and get kind of a peek into what it would

be like to do a FlexPath course.

So, thank you guys so much for watching.

Have a great day.

FlexPath Movement | Todd: What I'm excited about - Duration: 2:35.

Hello everyone, this is Todd and I'm a sponsored FlexPath student in the master's of education

program.

Today I wanted to share some information with you about some perks to enrolling in the FlexPath

program.

One of the perks that I first learned about was that my previous graduate credit hours

and professional development credits transferred into this program, so I didn't have to start

at zero.

This was exciting news to me because it saves me time and money and I can start advanced

into the program so that I'm not starting at zero.

This allows me to pursue my master's degree at a faster pace so that I can achieve my

educational goals.

Another thing that I was excited about as I prepared to enroll in this program was how

the pacing of the class is self-paced.

It's independently driven and there are no set schedules.

Whenever I complete a course I can move on to the next course and keep earning credits,

and I get graded immediately.

Compare that to a traditional program where you have set schedules, you have quarter deadlines,

you have semester deadlines.

Those things are not part of this program, so you're able to move freely through it as

you're comfortable, so if you need to work quick or slow as your schedule requires you

to, you can do that.

It's a great opportunity for teachers.

The next thing is just being able to use information that I learn right away.

I learned that this program is 100% competency based, which is great news for teachers because

as you learn information you should be able to apply it to your classroom the next day,

even.

So I look forward to learning new information, new teaching methods, new theories, the reasons

why we do things in the classroom.

I'm excited to learn and ultimately I'm excited to be able to implement these new methods

into my classroom right away.

I'm always looking to inspire my students and to improve my own knowledge and skills.

So these are some of the perks that stuck out to me as I began to consider enrolling

in this program, and I just wanted to share those with you.

I'm just happy that you joined me today and I look forward to posting some new updates

in the future.

Talk to you soon.

FlexPath Movement | Kati: Getting prepared to start - Duration: 5:31.

What's up guys, Kati Kleber here.

I wanted to a little video, as I'm kind of mentally preparing to start my MSN next month.

Next month y'all.

Start my MSN.

I'm doing the Capella FlexPath MSN in nursing education.

I'm pretty excited about that.

I'm going back to school y'all.

I haven't been in school since 2010.

That's like seven years ago ... And you know this is the FlexPath thing.

It's not this normal, or I guess traditional online setting, where it's like, "These are

the due dates, and you gotta do these."

It's up to me to make those due dates, and ... I really feel like I have to make sure

I structure myself to stay on task, to really get my goal.

My goal is to get this program done in one year.

Okay?

12 months.

I'm kind of mentally looking at it like my nursing shift.

Your shift is 12 hours long.

You kind of closely plan out the beginning of your shift.

You know the things you wanna get done by the end of the shift, but you're not gonna

say, "Okay I have to do this at this time."

It just kind of depends on how the beginning goes and how things progress.

I have a goal.

I wanna get four or five assessments done in the first four weeks.

That's kind of my first block, that I want to accomplish.

As I set my deadlines, because you know, you check out your assessment, and then you say

how long you think it's gonna take to complete that assessment.

I wanna be able to consider not only how long it's gonna take me to get that done, but also

in the big picture too.

If I'm pretty stressed, and I've got stuff going on, and I could give myself another

week to get something done, to allow myself a mental break, or some time to ... Extra

time to get something done.

When I consider the big picture, that enables me to do so.

Okay, I'm actually ahead by a few weeks, to meet my goal, so yeah, I'm allowed to have

another week here, or ... You know what?

I'm a little behind.

I wanna kind of kick it into high gear.

That way, when I get to this course, which I know is gonna be more challenging, I'm allowing

myself more time.

That's kind of how I'm mentally preparing I guess.

You never know till you get in.

I have this kind plan, but then we'll see when I get in.

I'm excited to see how it goes, and how things flow.

This is a different format that I'm used to.

I like change.

I like new things, so ... Interested and really excited to get started.

Couple things that I'm nervous about, y'all.

I'm a little nervous there's this aspect of it called, the practice immersion ... It's

not me at home working on stuff.

I'm in the practice setting, so whatever that may look like ... If I'm gonna follow a nurse

educator at a hospital, or a clinical instructor or something like that, for nursing students

... You know, that may be ... I don't know what it'll be, but I'm a little nervous about

that, cause I don't know now.

You just get nervous when you're in a new environment with new people, and ... Are they

gonna like me, and wanna teach me, or am I gonna be a burden.

I mean, I don't expect that at all, but you know, those normal freak outs.

I'm excited, but a little nervous about that, just being in that environment, but it's a

good nervous.

Before the game nervous.

And then, there's another aspect.

Clearly this is graduate level courses.

Right?

I looked at the courses I need to do.

Clearly multiple ones are heavily based in evidence-based practice, which is wonderful.

You know, diving into research, which is so necessary, especially at this level.

But really analyzing that stuff on a totally different level, than I did in my bachelor's.

I'm excited for, but a I'm a little nervous about it.

I know that's probably gonna be a challenge for me.

I'm probably gonna have to lean on some of the resources that Capella has for, you know,

diving into the statistical side of those things ... That was a challenge for me in

nursing school.

When I took a statistics course, and when I had to do the research course ... I enjoyed

it, the research aspect of it, but the understanding the statistics was a little challenging.

I know I'm not gonna be in an actual statistics course, but I'm to apply statistic principles

to what I'm doing.

I'm a little nervous about that, but that's probably because maybe it's my weakest area.

You know, that means I need it.

It's kind of what I'm thinking about, time management-wise, but I'm nervous about, but

excited to get rolling, excited to get started.

I looked at the course list, and there's not one of them that I'm not interested in.

And then they have this list of electives, so you pick the electives.

I'm like, "Can I just take all of these?

I feel like all of these are going to be very helpful to me, so let me just take every single

one of them.

Thanks guys."

So, yeah.

Starting soon.

Hope you guys enjoy having a sneak peak into the journey that I'm gonna be going on.

Excited to show that and share that with you guys.

Stay tuned y'all.

Hope to be seeing you around.

Have a great day.

Kati Kleber's journey to get her MSN with FlexPath - Duration: 2:54.

I think when you're a nurse, getting a master's degree is essential.

It's honestly like the sooner you can do it, the better because you just have so many options

of different things that you can do.

I'm Kati Kleber.

I am a certified critical care nurse, the nurse behind the FreshRN podcast and blog,

the author of five books, and a FlexPath student at Capella University.

I'm a mom and a wife.

I have a 15-month-old daughter, Hannah Joy, and I have two rescue dogs, Mac and Tosh.

Getting an MSN in nursing education is going to change my career I think substantially.

FlexPath is really possible of fitting into my busy life for a few reasons.

One of the biggest ones is the fact that you can set your own deadlines.

It's up to me.

Someone else isn't setting this for me and I have to make my life fit around that.

I make this fit around my life.

That flexibility is so valuable when you have so much going on in your life, but you have

these goals you want to achieve and it's so customized to you.

A program that's self-paced I think is important to really understand what that means, right?

It's not the traditional system that was so ingrained into us.

This is quite different.

I love that it's different like this in that whether it takes you two weeks to finish your

course or 12 weeks, it's totally up to you.

You dictate that pace.

Then when you get done, the next day you start the next course.

I think it's much better and a much more innovative way to look at higher education.

With FlexPath, you really leverage your knowledge as you progress through the program.

I can focus on the things that I'm not as experienced with that I need more education

with, and that I'm not spending this predetermined amount of time on something I've already proven

I'm proficient at.

One of the other things I really like about FlexPath is the different cost structure.

A lot of us are familiar with that per credit hour structure.

I pay this much for this credit hour, but FlexPath is quite different in that you're

paying this flat amount for 12 weeks, a block of time, and it's up to you to get done as

much or as little in that amount of time.

The faster you do it, the less it costs.

I also appreciate when you combine that with things like employer discounts, because Capella

works with a lot of different employers, and if you can also add that into it, it really

makes this a lot more affordable.

I truly would not be doing my master's right now if it wasn't for the FlexPath option,

but having the FlexPath structure and learning model, I can do it.

FlexPath Movement | Coni: Setting my own deadlines - Duration: 1:34.

Hi, I'm Coni, and I'm here today to talk with you about FlexPath and setting your own due

dates.

You know, as a busy working professional, I find myself often working 50 plus hours

a week.

So, I really appreciate that FlexPath lets me decide when my assignments are due.

You know, at the beginning of every class I get the opportunity to preview the material

and determine how much time I think I need to do each assignment.

I take a look at what's going on personally and professionally, select my due dates, and

submit my plan, start my homework, and off I go.

But, you know, often happens, life gets in the way, and sometimes you need to make adjustments

to those due dates.

But FlexPath lets me do that.

And this just recently happened to me prior to going on vacation.

I submitted my plan with the intent of working on my assignment while I was on vacation,

and while I did, I didn't progress as far as I thought I was going to.

So I needed a couple of extra days to finish that assignment and submit it with the quality

that I wanted.

But FlexPath let me do that.

I was able to adjust that date, resubmit my plan, work my assignment, get the quality

that I wanted.

It took the stress level way down, it kept some balance in my life, and things are great.

I'm back on track, I'm following my plan, and my assignment is done.

So, that's it.

Thank you for listening and we'll catch you next time.
