hey folks this is rhykker with my expanded science analysis video of the
new overwatch map horizon lunar colony yesterday we posted a video fully
examining the lore but in the interest of making the video shorter I cut out
some parts where I geeked out on science in this video we're going full on nerd
mode and we're going to analyze the computer displays and rant about some
bad science on this map to start let's take a look at some of the display panel
starting with the defenders spawn room the maintenance Bay amidst the panels on
this display you can see a satellite Explorer 2000 this appears to be the
exact same satellite that we have here stationed for repairs on the right here
we have a familiar sight if you've seen the teaser which we examined in a
previous video this is an overview map of the lunar colony itself and we know
that station I over here corresponds to the observatory which will be featured
in this map in the top right corner we can see that the numbers for antenna
gain transit frequency and wavelength are all varying and if we look down a
little bit we'll find some additional data after doing some research I
couldn't find anything noteworthy that these numbers are terms tell us about
the moon base so I'm just going to chalk it up the flavor with no hidden message
but if you've gained any insight from this do leave a comment as for this
little computer screen panel over here we can see some star mapping at play and
on the left here we see some statistics about planet Earth the radius the age
the mass the area these are all statistics on earth and they're all
correct the orbital period below as well that's how long it takes a planet to
make one full revolution around the Sun in other words how long a year is and on
the right here this globe still represents Earth the giveaway is the
gravity figure that corresponds to Earth's gravity and on the left here we
have a radio telescope so in our previous video and we're looking at the
teaser we learned that these antenna settings these transmit frequencies
these correspond to radio wavelengths radar
type of telescope here on the left would be specialized in picking up radio waves
we have radio telescopes today on earth you've likely seen those enormous
satellite dishes they're so big because radio waves
coming from very very very far away ie space are going to be very faint so we
need these huge dishes to receive the signal at the bottom here we have
mention of gravitational waves which is pretty interesting because this is a
very emerging branch of astronomy while gravitational waves were predicted back
in 1916 by a certain genius scientist that scientist named Albert Einstein it
was only a year ago that scientists made the first direct observations of
gravitational waves the observed waves originated from a pair of merging black
holes and what a gravitational wave is is basically a ripple in space-time the
fact that we have a blinking alert here is definitely noteworthy and I'm
wondering if there is some form of gravitational anomaly that has been
detected this might hint towards some impending threat or possibly some
impending breakthrough in the physics in the overwatch universe next we'll take a
look inside the hydroponics lab where we found the email interactions into that
in the teaser now also in this room where you can see some consoles that
tell us some science things from this station v in the moon lab we can see
that carbon dioxide was being extracted on the right here it says Arabic DOCSIS
which is a genus of flowering plant no worthy as being the first plant to have
its full genome sequence it was also the first plant to flower and produce seeds
in space this is generally seen as essential to maintaining a long-term
colony on another world I will get more into that in a bit off to the left here
you can see oxygen farm and I guess we didn't have to wait all that long to get
into it so basically plants breathe in carbon
dioxide and breathe out oxygen they do the opposite of what humans do since
there is no readily available source of oxygen off-world you can effectively
farm ox ghin by having a bunch of plants around
and that's exactly what we see happening on this moon base and in this particular
lab you can see a lot of different experiments going on with different
types of plants this little panel here just seems to be for flavor
then this panel here is just orbital GPS tracking this appears to be the tracking
of various satellites both natural and unnatural around Earth on the right here
we see orbit 364 first up I'll specify that it is very bizarre for a scientific
display to not show units I don't know if this is 364 days or kilometres or
what but this does sort of make sense as 364 thousand kilometers because that is
a possible orbital distance for the moon the moon's distance from Earth varies
between three hundred fifty six thousand to four hundred and seven thousand
kilometers but then gravity doesn't make sense
12.5 the standard unit for gravity is meters per second squared
12.5 is well above Earth's gravity it's even higher than Saturn's gravity it's
not quite as high as Jupiter but it definitely raises questions as to what
any of this can mean and it's just to me like a bunch of pseudo scientific
poppycock to look good these panels just say initialize
sequence and that covers everything that's not redundant in here most of the
other displays on this map are either redundant or very similar but here is
one other unique one I found we see earth and we see initialize sequence
again it's very bizarre to have scientific displays with no units one
little additional thing I wanted to point out in this video is that the
station's computer calls out various things as you move around the base for
instance that you enter the break room the computer will say feeling hungry if
you enter the classroom the computer will welcome you and ask you to take a
seat and we won't play them all because most of them aren't really noteworthy
but there is this one that's very special it's a pretty rare voice line
that happens when you enter the classroom
this is a brilliant origin story two Winston's famous line and one last
computer interaction that I thought was worth highlighting is this
so that you may see
now we're going to get into our science rant in a moment here but before that I
just wanted to point out something we missed in our last video
Winston's voice line when he's looking through the telescope is the first day
or so we all pointed to our countries the third or fourth day we were pointing
to our continents by the fifth day we were aware of only one earth now I found
it odd that Winston would say this it didn't really make sense or pertain to
his situation Winston was either born on the moon base or brought there when he
was so young that he has no recollection of earth so why would he or the other
gorillas be pointing back at countries on earth was he may be referring to the
human scientists being the ones that were doing the pointing as it turns out
it's actually a quote from Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz al-saud did I get
it right who was the first Arab to fly into outer space and the first member of
a royal family to be an astronaut he was one of seven members of an international
crew aboard the space shuttle discovery in 1985 he was only 28 years old at the
time and he still holds the record for the youngest person to ever fly in a
space shuttle hat tip to kiss Kalu for recognizing the quote now lastly we'll
end with our science rant which has to do with going out onto the lunar surface
and interesting to note about being out here is that there's almost no sound
there's basically no sound and it sound returns as you re-enter and that's some
nice attention to detail from Blizzard as I'm sure you've all heard there's no
sound in space in space no one can hear you scream right and it doesn't matter
whether you're in literal outer space or just on the surface of the Moon to
understand why we don't hear anything we have to understand what sound is so
sound is a wave that vibrates through something that's something could be air
it could be water it could even be your neighbors wall at five o'clock in the
morning while I'm trying to get some sleep for
you see sound doesn't require air that's why you can still hear while underwater
and sound is actually excellent at traveling through solids
that's why subwoofers do an excellent job at shaking things up but sound isn't
great at changing from one medium to another like from a solid back to air
but the key here is that for sound to exist there need to be particles that
can be vibrated sound is the vibration of particles and in space in a vacuum
there are so few particles that sound basically can exist so while I applaud
blizzard on the correct depiction of sound or the lack thereof on the lunar
surface I do have to nitpick and this isn't a
big deal but we got to pick the airlock so first off what is an airlock an
airlock is basically used as a safe way to pass between two environments that
are of drastically different either pressure or atmosphere or even medium
say water and air in the case of the moon you have an airlock to take you
from a no air environment a vacuum into an oxygenated pressurized environment so
an airlock is generally a room with two doors one door leading into one
environment and one leading to the other environment and these doors are airtight
if you wanted to go on a spacewalk then you would from inside open the door to
the airlock go into the airlock have the door closed
behind you and then have that room depressurized this allows for a gradual
change in your environment allowing one your body to adapt to it but also to
prevent any negative effects like getting sucked out into space the moment
the other airlock door opens because you see if that airlock door opens
immediately while the airlock is still pressurized then you're creating a
vacuum effect a vacuum is basically just emptiness and the reason a vacuum sucks
is because you have an area of high pressure the area with air and an area
with low or no pressure where the vacuum is so all the air
wants to rush out to equalize the pressures pressure wants to be equal
gases want to equalize pressure so there's going to be a big woosh and all
the air is going to get sucked out into the openness of space and what's going
to get sucked out with it whatever is in that room
now again the most important part of an airlock is to have only one door ever
open at a time because what happens with both doors open at the same time
well what first office not even an airlock but second of all what's going
to happen on the moonbase all the air is going to get sucked out of the moonbase
you're going to vacuum suction out everything and look I get it for game
mechanic reasons they made the airlock operate this way but I'm still going to
nitpick the science here because it's a bit silly it's like why even have hair
flock to be fair that last message from Winston was that the airlock was
malfunctioning so maybe this is the malfunction in the airlock that both
doors are opening at the same time actually if there is no greater lore
reason behind that if literally they just made that up to
explain why both airlock doors open at the same time then Bravo to Blizzard for
explaining away bad science with lore reasons that the airlock is
malfunctioning still doesn't explain why things aren't getting sucked out into
space that could actually make for a fun mechanic but maybe a bit too difficult
to pull off or maybe too annoying and that wraps up this video leave a comment
with your thoughts do you think the airlock is working as intended thanks
