Hey, hello everyone, welcome to a brandnew video
A video at the start of fall season,
Because, let's face it, the fall almost starts,
And as you can see, the weather sucks big time.
But the fall is the perfect period
for topwater fishing
I usually use topwater frogs for that
Those hollowbody topwater frogs
You know?
Thos hollow floating rubberfrogs with 2 stingers at the top
And i know they have a reputation
for losing fish on them, i hear that quite often..
I know these lures are very challenging
but at least they're honest baits..
It's between you and the fish
it's very simple,
consider it as a fight
..Or the pike wins
or you'll be the winner
In this video i'll tell you how i fish with these lures
And who knows, maybe it'll help you
to catch more fish on them
so i would say,
stay tuned
Catching pike with froglures
Pike are real bastards
little jerks if you will,
They're always hidden
the problem is
You don't see them, or hear them
and than while you pass a pike with your frog,
BAMMMMM!
They bite
What happens next?
Something weird happens up here
It happens so fast and the first thing that pops into your mind is this,
You try to hook it
That's an incredibly stupid thing to do
because you'll lose it or miss the fish completely
Take a look at this videoclip
You'll see what i do wrong
It's just an example
I spotted a small pike in this pond
The pike follows the frog through the plants
I decide to stop the frog for a second
This is the perfect chance for the pike to attack the frog
Out of a reflex, i lift my rod to hook the pike
Way to early, and i missed the pike completely
As you could see
If you are too fast, you'll miss the fish
That's too bad, and there's nothing you can do about it
I can honestly say, it sucks big time
Of course you had that cool bite,
that's cool but you also want to catch that fish right?
But that fish is laughing its ass off, because it won
So what can you do to catch that fish?
That'll be waiting
Just wait for 1 or 1,5 second before you strike
Whenever the fish swims away with the frog and it makes traction,
Then you know the frog's stuck in there
Then you strike as fast as you can
Let's take a look at this next videoclip,
Then, you'll see that's the key to succes
In this beautiful clear pond,
I see a small pike in the ambush,
waiting for a nice tasty snack
I'll pass this pike with a frog lure, from the side
The pike attacks the frog and i wait a second before i actually strike
Bad luck for the pike, because now it's hooked properly
it's hooked nice in the front of its mouth like it should be
First i have to say sorry, the camera was faced down
So unfortunately you've missed the attack on the frog
But you could see that fish can be caught fairly easy with a topwater frog
no problems at all
When you just wait before you strike
Just wait for a second or 1,5 second
And you'll have more chance to hook it
If it still goes wrong for some reason
Because that'll happen sometimes
It's still no guarantee that you'll catch the fish
Then there's really nothing you can do
There's one thing that might help
Rigg your frog with a treblehook
You really can rigg them wit an extra hook
I made a seperate video about that
and you'll find that video on my youtube channel
You'll find the link to it, in the video description below
So i you want to know how to that,
Just click on the link and watch the video
That still's no guarantee,
but it gives you a better chance
If you want that more certainty, build a seperate rig in your frog
and it might help you hook more fish
When using topwater frogs,
there's one thing really important.
Don't you dare to give up
Really, never give up
You'll almost never will hook a fish in just one strike
Most of the time, when a pike attacks the frog
which are normally described as a very careful and small bite
It's an amazing indication that the fish is still out there
That little jerk is yours to catch
So the only thing left to do,
is keep on casting near the attack spot, and the fish will attack again
And this time, you are mentally prepared for this..
And maybe you'll catch that same fish eventually
the problem is though,
there's still no guarantee, that you'll hook the fish at all
Take a look at this videoclip
Sometimes it just, isn't your day..
Here i cast the frog past the lillypads
Frog lures have a very cool advantage...
you don't have to worry that it hooks itself on vegetation
There's a pike hunting between those lillypads
The pike's chasing the frog, and attacks
I'm too fast this time
Besides, the pike didn't had the lure in its mouth, so it's a missed chance
I'll cast near the lillypads for the second time
This because i want to reel in the frog near the reed
The pike attacks, and this time i feel the pike's making traction
Unfortunately i've lost the pike again
I'll try a third attempt, i just don't want to give up
The pike attacks the frog yet again, and this time..
i lost it again...
As you can see, three times in a row
After that, you'll get angry on yourself
After this, you realize that something went horribly wrong
And ot's important for you to realize like i said earlier,
Don't you dare to give up
Never give up
You'll catch that little jerk later
A pike for example is a territorial fish, and it lurks mostly in the same area..
Just wait for a while and come back later
And than you'll catch that fish eventually
It's another time,
in exactly the same pond. I cast in the frog near the reed
Again, i did it all wrong,
way too fast
So reel in, and try again quickly
And on the exact same spot, the pike strikes again
This time i hooked the pike properly
An attack on a frog is an amazing feeling,
but if you manage to catch the fish, it'll be even a better feeling
You have seen some of my footage now,
and you might onder about one thing,
Did you just reel in that frog?
It looks like i do, but i don't
Of course i reel in the frog, which makes sense,
but i use a special technique while i reel in
I use the American style to do this
In Europe it's a bit of a weird way to use a topwater frog
But it's such a fun technique to use
It's like this, i cast the frog in,
While i reel in the frog,
I give very short bumps to the frog
as fast as possible,
That works just great!
on the watersurface,
The frog will give off some extra vibrations,
The frog will bump its way on the surface, sort of speaking
The fish get's crazy and want the frog as a snack
The most common way to reel in a frog is the good ol' classic swimming frog
That's what a frog normally do when it swims
Like us people
That's also a perfect way, although it's a bit more slow
it's a matter of taste i guess,
Whatever works for is just fine
Just try to find the technique you like the most
What also, is a very fun thing to do,
Is that you so now and then, combine both techniques
I've an example to show you what i do, let's take a look
Let's start with the American way,
While bumping the top of my rod,
when reel in the froglure,
It'll make a lot of vibrations on the surface of the water
It looks like the frog is in a hurry
For me personally, it's the most effective way
The most common technique, the classic swimming frog, is the most used way to do this
While reeling in the frog, you'll add some speed with the top of your rod,
Now the frog will perform a classic swimming action on the surface of the water
Of course, you can combine both of these techniques
first the fast American way and then the classic swimming action
Stop the frog for a couple of seconds so now and then
A lot of you already gave me some very cool reactions on Facebook on some of the videoclips i used
Thanks for those, they were awesome!
And many of you asked me what i use for a leader
I use titanium leaders from Fox Rage
The brand doesn't really matter, i use titanium leaders
Of course you can use steel leaders if you want, they work just fine
There's one material you shouldn't use, fluor carbon
My experience with that stuff, is that pike for example, bites through it fairly easy
Because pike's a very violent fish
So just use steel or titanium,
Those materials work great!
You need the perfect situation if you want to fish with topwater froglures
So, what is the perfect situation?
No wind
That's the perfect situation
If there's no wind blowing, the watersurface will be smooth
That'll give the froglure that extra dimension
When it bumps on the surface, the fish will attack
Of course another important thing is,
Where to fish with a froglure?
Let me tell you one thing, canals won't work
Find those shallow ponds,
with clear water
Lots of reed and vegetation,
Those spots are succesful guaranteed
Between reedcollars and lillybeds, there's Always a pike in an ambush
Be careful though, whenever the pond is overgrown with lillies,
pike will not see the watersurface properly,
And won't see the frog.
Make sure you find a spot where you have some open areas
If you have such a location closeby, clear water,
lots of vegetation and shallow waters
consider yourself Lucky, that's your chance
That's where the pike lurks, a lot of them actually
Than you might wonder,
'Okay, i have such waters closeby, but where do i need
to cast in to catch those fish?'
I'll show you
These very shallow inlets, seem very effective during daytime
You see pike attacking the lure very quickly
Reedcollars are also perfect hiding spots for predators
During the evening, you might expect the predators in the middle of the pond
But the sides are still the best spots to lure the fish to attack the frog
Well my friends, i'll end for now,
I hope you find this video useful,
and i really hope the tips i gave you were useful as well
And ofcourse i hope you catch a lot of predators on topwter frogs
Because it's such a cool lure to use, it's fantastic
Imagine the adrenaline rushing through your body when your frog has been struck by a predator
Then the real fight starts,
It's between you,
and the fish.
who will win?
See you next video!
