The newer aids should not whistle and the technology is fantastic when it comes
to reducing that but it is also important that you have the
right piece on the end.
um so we'll make sure that you have the right piece
It is also important to have at least 2 appointments um because they say something like 30% of
people walk out at the first appointment with the perfect setting but you really gotta go
out and use them for about two weeks as much as you can.
So that when you come back if you do get things like feedback you can let us know and we can
fix it.
righto no worries so you'll need two appointments
thank you so obviously there are lots of different types
of hearing aids for us to recommend the best ones for you
we need to know exactly what situations you want to improve your hearing in.
um does it tend to be mostly quiet situations? or is it noise?
well when I'm with the kids that's the main part.
Is that just around the house?
yeah if we go out for a counter meal and that you know.
WE are trying to get a when you go out for a what sorry?
lunch.
OK.
Is that like in a cafe or , no just at one of the hotels
in a hotel?
yep.
So imagine it gets a little bit noisy.
yep it does that's only once every month so.
once a month?
OK. and what are the other situations?
so when you are with them is it pretty quiet?
apart from the hotel?
yes its quiet but as I said, you know my daughter and them they're just at me all the time,
especially the 2 youngest ones.
OK and is it when you are talking to them and they're not facing you?
or is it even when they are facing you?
yeah yeah and my granddaughter is the same, she says I can read your lips but they cant
so yeah.
IT is really important to use good communication strategies even with the hearing aids in,
so obviously getting people to come and face you, not talking to you while they have their
head in the dishwasher, that's important.
And all those good things will give you even more benefit with the hearing aids in.
so at this stage were you old ones, were they a behind the ear style?
yeah yeah with a tube.
yes so you had a piece behind and a piece in your
ear.
yeah did you like that style?
No I didn't.
you didn't like that style?
no Didn't.
Suppose I'm being fussy but.
what was it about that style that you didn't like?
NO just me, as I said it was annoying all the time.
So the piece in your ear was annoying you?
No they just were squealing and then you had to take them out.
It wasn't uncomfortable?
No No, it wasn't too bad no.
Because there are 2 different styles of hearing aids
There is the similar one to what you got so a piece behind the ear which is a behind the
ear style.
That's the ones I had yeah.
yep, I just have them in front of her now.
great there is also what's called an in the ear
style.
which is custom made for your ear. and there is nothing behind (the ear)
that would be all right, yeah.
do I have to pay extra for that?
so there are different levels of technology and we can talk you through that.
that would be good.
the only thing I should say is... and it is definitely up to you.
the in the ear style can make some people feel a little bit blocked up.
your low pitch hearing in particular where it is pretty good we don't want to make you
feel too blocked up.
sometimes that's what can happen with the in the ear style.
oh alright. with the behind the ear you have whats called
an open fit.
so there is less feeling of blocked up you don't feel quite as blocked up.
but totally your decision.WE can now look at the different options.
so whats that one?
that's a little Ace so that's a behind the ear
yeah that's a little tiny one yeah yeah
and it has a little receiver on the end. and you don't need that thing in your ear?
yeah you still do but not a big thing.
yeah um and then this one here is the fully subsidised
one yep
so you have to pay extra for that?
yes and carol will just show you all of the different options.
Do you want the book Carol?
yep if you have it there great.
So in terms of the behind the ear there are different sizes so the piece behind the ear
don't need to be really cumbersome, you can get quite small styles.
that little baby one the little Ace that's really small.
yes really discrete
You don't have anything like arthritis, or anything that would make it difficult to get
the hearing aid in or out?
No just arthritis in my hips.
OK your hands and fingers are OK?
yep so it sounds like you would manage something
that size?
yeah yeah so what happens with the government one.
I have them all here great
that's what we call a behind the ear that's the one I had.
yes sounds like it.
OK, the piece behind the ear that gets smaller, those ones are partially subsidised.
so the fact that you are due for new hearing aids means the government contributes and
you just pay the gap.
so the prices are subsidised.
yeah, I'd have to see what they were, what the prices say.
If you have private health No I haven't
so the behind the ear smaller style for 2 of them they start at, level 2
I can write it down here for you great so we can give you all of the different
prices obviously the most expensive ones, you are
basically paying for the features so features are things that go in the hearing
aids to help with things like reducing background noise, things being clearer.
It doesn't sound like you are in a huge amount of noise?
So I dont think you need the very very top level.
IT sounds like around once a month you are in a bit of noise.
there might be a bit of noise around the house.
So it sounds like in the middle would be a good starting point
so a level 3 But we will give you all the prices, just
so that you know what hearing aids are worth Gives you a bit of an idea.
So for that's for one in each ear, so for the two.
That's $6500? Yes they are an investment.
If you want, If you aren't sure, if you
want to try them?
With any of those ones where you pay the gap you can try them for a whole week.
So that the Gap?
yes With your subsidy, so they would be more expensive
if you weren't due for new hearing aids.
yeah, its a bit out of my range.
the ones just above the governments still comes in that smaller behind the ear style
so it doesn't need to be as big.
that one? you can actually get it in the same size as
the Ace, sorry, not the ace a different name.
Its basically the features, so the level 3 has more features than the 2.
the 3 will cope better when you go out to the hotel.
so if you are looking for the size, if size is the main thing the level just above the
government one comes in that smaller one as well.
that's this level level 2 $1350.
