(Episode 1688)
Hello, everyone.
I'm Shin Hyunjun of Entertainment Weekly.
It's the second week of September. This week,
we have lots of bad news. Lee Changmyeong
made controversy due to drunk driving.
And singer Gil was sentenced to jail time.
And an elder in the movie industry,
Director Kim Gideok has passed away.
We'll let you know the details shortly.
The first story we have prepared
is by our reporter who is talented and funny.
Or maybe just I think that.
Kim Taejin, I heard you met with a big star.
Yes, the biggest star of today.
A superstar.
I met with Kim Saengmin.
As of this month, Kim Saengmin has been
on Entertainment Weekly for 20 years.
So we had a special interview with him.
Let's check his rollercoaster of an interview.
We'll have it on soon.
I can't wait.
But first, we have This Week's Hot Clicks.
I was at the Seoul Drama Awards
at the red carpet a few days ago.
I'll share the details soon.
First, we have some bad news.
Elder Director Kim Gideok has passed away.
We have other news including that today.
Elder movie director Kim Gideok
has passed away at the age of 83. He was suffering
from lung cancer after being diagnosed
with it in April, and passed away on Sept. 7.
Many came to pay their condolences, feeling like
they lost a giant of the movie industry.
He got the diagnosis in April.
(Kim Euna / Daughter)
And he was doing fine on the day of his surgery.
But after, he had a respirator
and couldn't have water.
(Kim Suyong / Director) I feel heartbroken and empty.
To ensure he didn't leave all alone, many actors
that worked with him came to pay respects.
I did the famous movie "The North and South"
with Kim Gideok.
He was full of humanity.
And everyone liked him.
As someone in the industry, it's sad he passed away.
After his debut with the war movie "Five Marines"
in 1961, He filmed "Barefooted Youth,"
which starred Um Aengran.
He was a master of sci-fi movies, filming "Yonggary."
He did sports movies, including "Glorious Second Half
of the 9th Inning." He directed movies in
various dramas, expanding the base of Korean movies.
(He was at the Busan International Film Fest in 2011)
(Source: MBC) Leaving my handprint here
is not an honor to only me,
but to my family as well.
We will always remember the late Kim Gideok,
who was a giant in the industry and passionately
made movies up until his final days.
Rest in peace.
The entertainment world has many DUI cases.
I can't drink.
I didn't leave. The rain made the road slippery.
Lee Changmyeong was charged with crimes related to
drunk driving and going to court for it.
On September 5, he had his first hearing.
The prosecutors demanded
a sentence of ten months.
The prosecutors said that Lee was drunk
even though he stated he wasn't, because he called
a proxy driver, went missing for 20 hours afterward,
and his hospital records show he was drunk driving.
But Lee Changmyeong said the proxy driver
was for a producer at a TV station who was drunk
and said the hospital records were an error done by
an intern, denying he was drunk driving.
Whether he drove drunk is the biggest issue.
The producer who was drinking with him shared
his side. The producer who was there never testified
that Lee Changmyeong drank. The statement
has messed with the prosecutor's defense.
His verdict will be revealed on the 21st.
Singer Gil, who was caught drunk driving,
was sentenced to eight months in prison.
He parked his car in a suburb of Namsan, Seoul
and was sleeping there.
His BAC was 0.165% at the time.
That's enough to get his license revoked.
But the police brought him to court instead.
The reason is that he drank
in 2014 and 2004 as well, which is three strikes.
Gil said he would receive any punishment.
However, public reaction is cold.
We hope there are no more DUI cases.
(A glamorous door opens)
A festival for drama fans around the world
has begun.
A lot of stars participated in
the 2017 Seoul Drama Awards.
Let's check it out.
This is where we covered the event.
The emcees, Shin Dongyeop and Kim Jeongeun,
walked on the red carpet first.
(Q. How are you so good at hosting programs?)
Being nice.
Inseparable purity.
Don't only cheer for me.
This is Kim Saengmin's first prime of his life.
Our Saengmin.
Yes, Kim Saengmin...
I'm paying to see Kim Saengmin's "Receipt" again.
It's not easy to do that.
We talk about Kim Saengmin like that,
and he buys me lots of food and drinks.
Why doesn't he buy us any?
I buy him a lot, so he buys it back.
Stars known all over the world,
the top movie stars and famous directors,
and stars of TV shows
from all over the country came.
Awards ceremonies always have pretty dresses.
But you have to be careful of some people.
Oh my, be careful.
(Shoes caught on her dress)
We're always worried about that at awards shows.
I'm not used to these clothes.
I wore high heels specially for this.
I don't know what part of your outfit to focus on.
What's the best part?
You'll know by looking.
We were both embarrassed.
I came to cheer on Korean dramas in hopes
they'll develop and spread all over the word.
I see.
While we were covering the event,
the one we were all waiting for,
Park Bogum, arrived on the red carpet.
It's Park Bogum. (So handsome)
You're at the top.
At the last awards, Song Joongki said he
wanted to do a role with you. Any role.
I want to work with Park Bogum sometime.
I want to act as brothers with Joongki.
But I'm fine doing any role with him.
We'd like that too. We hope to see you act together.
The 2017 drama awards is becoming a global
awards show, having the most shows
and is the only exclusively drama awards show.
The Hallyu Drama Actress Award.
Congratulations, Park Boyoung!
The highlight of this awards show was the Hallyu
Drama Actress Award, which went to Park Boyoung.
The Male Actor award went to Park Bogum.
(Greeted fans from all over the world)
(He said thanks in 7 languages)
Thank you all. I'm blessed. Thank you.
Hold on.
Please say something to Joongki and Hyekyo.
Joongki.
I remember you getting this award last year.
I hope you live happily ever after
with your future wife Song Hyekyo.
It's early, but congrats on your wedding. I love you.
We have to hear how they felt on the award.
I'll work harder in the future.
- Thank you. / - Congratulations.
Thank you. Good work.
We thought he was leaving like that,
but he's giving fan service.
The person he's taking a picture with
is the nation's refreshing actress, Lee Yuri.
I got outed as a fan of Park Gogum.
My heart was racing.
You were a presenter today,
- but your role... / - Yeah?
Do you hope to win the Grand Award?
No, I'm not even dreaming of that.
I just came to see other celebrities.
How cute.
I'll be back in a good project.
So please love and cheer for me.
Thank you so much.
Thank you, Entertainment Weekly.
The American drama
"This Is Us" won the Grand Award.
We hope to see all the award-winning stars
in other projects soon.
- Congratulations. / - Congratulations.
(The special star of today)
Without even dreaming of being the star,
reporter Kim Saengmin is going to see the star.
The seat that always makes him nervous.
We're having special time with a special star.
Introducing the real star!
It was a hidden camera prank.
The fossil of Entertainment Weekly.
Congratulations on 20 years.
We appreciate your devotion of 20 years...
Such a handsome guy with sweet voice.
(Special present for 20 years on Entertainment Weekly)
20 years, to someone in their youth,
is nearly an entire lifetime.
To Saengmin, who worked hard for that long
in the early morning and late at night for the show.
I'm rooting you on, even from far away.
Saengmin!
You did it, kiddo.
You didn't hit it big, not even for 20 years,
and you got married and had two kids.
Now you have a fan site and fan club. How?
Congratulations, Saengmin. I love you.
(The 20 years that flashed by in an instant)
Starting in 1997,
this year he's been on the show for 20 years.
The national reporter,
Kim Saengmin is the real star of today.
(Commemorating 20 years on Entertainment Weekly)
Great!
Congratulations on 20 years.
Don't cry!
This is sadder than we imagined.
Please introduce yourself again.
You're the star of today.
This is such an honor. I'm the star of
Entertainment Weekly's interview today.
(First time not being a reporter in 20 years)
It took 20 years,
but I think I could've done it faster.
Thank you so much.
Let's talk about life changes.
How is walking down the street different today?
Nobody asked me for autographs,
but I've given autographs
and taken pictures with people.
They smile a lot.
If they have, it's because they've seen "Receipt"
I'll ask you about how your pay has changed soon.
My income
will go up no matter what.
He cried then laughed.
You'll get in trouble!
Did you want this
golden age?
Or did you not think about it?
I'd given up on it
about 2-3 years ago.
I told this to Taejin, and he said
to give up.
To live quietly.
I had said it a lot.
So I didn't expect this to happen at all.
(20 years as a reporter on Entertainment Weekly)
This wasn't just coincidence.
Kim Saengmin worked endlessly, moving forward.
What kind of stories do the countless stars
that Kim Saengmin met and the time
he spent with Entertainment Weekly have?
Let's check it out.
We're in a small theater.
We prepared a video.
Don't cry this time.
Let's check it out.
They seem like oil and water.
(1997, his first time on Entertainment Weekly)
It was prerecorded then.
(The freshness of Kim Saengmin in his 20s)
I'm the cutie of Entertainment Weekly, Kim Saengmin.
Won't the plates break if 3 girls get together?
What happens if three men do?
(Embarrassed)
Your first episode was with
Kim Baekcheon and Lee Ikseon.
Yes, in 1997.
But you weren't nervous at all.
Didn't you feel what Im Baekcheon just said?
I'm just saying what I prepared.
I was scared then.
I was in high school back then.
Seeing you on that show...
That was one
of my wishes.
I think I've always said that.
The next video is legendary.
The thousandth episode of Entertainment Weekly.
(Engrossed in memories)
I'm going up to the sky!
Kim Saengmin, who had a fear of heights,
went on a security plane for Entertainment Weekly.
It's safe. We're landing.
We're going up again!
(Embarrassed x100)
Please show love to Entertainment Weekly!
He's incredibly passionate.
And award ceremonies, where reporters must go.
Kim Saengmin was not the exception.
I'm at the 36th Cheongryong Movie Awards.
I'm on the red carpet.
It's so cold here right now.
We hope you still go to awards ceremonies
even though you've become a star.
He looks very cold.
He's here!
He's gone! He just left.
When you arrive on the scene,
all the other reporters line up alongside you.
Is there a reason for that?
They know I'm older and am working hard,
and the stars come close and wave...
But isn't it sad that I'm excited over that?
They're coming because I'm pitiful...
Is that the right place to wear an armband?
I'll ask what the public is thinking.
Do you earn more from working that hard?
You already know.
You only work four days a week at the most.
But if it's live, it's five days.
But the pay is the same.
I'll ask a bad question.
You've gotten this far,
and you said you spend lavishly on your family.
We hope that you'll buy us coffee
or dinner sometime.
I want to pay back Shin Hyunjun
$330 in the next six months.
Really?
He's talking about dinner, right?
I love Entertainment Weekly that much.
(Hahahaha)
I'm very generous.
$330 is a lot. He's amazing.
It was an honor to interview
on Entertainment Weekly.
I'll keep working hard.
I hope you all continue
to do your best as well.
Thank you.
Please call the viewers great.
Viewers, you are great!
Thank you.
The shining beacon who silently drew other
stars to him for 20 years and did his best to bring
stories of stars to us, Kim Saengmin.
We all thank you for your honest interview today.
(Money fairy)
Congratulations, Kim Saengmin!
Thank you.
I'll take the rice.
Money fairy!
Thank you.
Saengmin was congratulated by many.
From Entertainment Weekly, congratulations again.
Congratulations.
For Saengmin, who's been here for 20 years,
we'd like to hear his thoughts.
How do you feel?
I'm so thankful.
Let me get this out of your hair.
My first time on the show in 1997 feels like yesterday.
I'm the father of two children
and I'm happy that I can continue
to sit here.
I'll continue working hard in the future.
Thank you.
I was tearing up when I saw the video earlier
and right now.
You worked very hard to get this far.
There's something I want to ask you.
Do you remember your first interview on our show?
Yes, of course I do.
My first interview was with the late Shin Haecheol.
He was a huge star, so it was difficult.
He told me to not be nervous and treated me well.
It's not easy to be in the same position
on one show for 20 years.
But Kim Saengmin succeeded in doing just that.
We hope he'll be here for 10 or 20 more years
as the permanent dinosaur of Entertainment Weekly.
We hope he becomes a fossil.
Congratulations once again on 20 years.
Please give a round of applause.
Long live Saengmin!
I'll remember the $330 within six months, too.
I get to eat for free!
The next story is by Lauren Oh and Kim Taejin.
It's time for Guerrilla Date.
The star is actor Kim Namgil.
He captivated the citizens with his sweet charms.
But during the interview, he chatted a lot,
doing a direct 180 in his charmingness.
We'll check out his charms soon.

The movie "V.I.P." is under controversy
for its portrayal of women.
What's the source of this controversy?
Despite the fact that "V.I.P." can't be viewed
by minors, it's a huge production.
But as soon as the movie came out,
ratings dropped a lot and reservations dropped.
A misogyny controversy is a killer for movies.
So I prepared this.
You even prepared this for the segment?
A segment within a segment.
This shows a massive change.
They're all 1-star or 10-star reviews.
I see.
On the first day, 209 people gave it one star.
And that changed to 643 on the second day.
In addition,
there's the netizen score and the viewer score.
People are saying not to see it
because it's a misogynistic movie.
So lots of people give 1 star without even watching it.
You can feel it from the graph.
In our society, misogyny and misandry is common.
So a topic that people argue over is
how prevalent it is in media.
What's the reason that "V.I.P." was
caught up in controversy?
There's a scene that was an issue.
A psychopath entered
and just kills people without reason.
But most of them were women.
It was hard to watch that scene,
which was long and had lots of women being killed.
I thought that as I watched the movie.
I thought it was excessive and long.
I think it's hard to see that scene as misogynistic.
- On the contrary? / - Yes.
I do feel it's uncomfortable to watch.
The character played by Lee Jongseok
is explained in that 10-minute scene at the start.
We have to understand him
in order to feel enraged at him.
But that explanation was excessive.
It was at the start.
Then the controversy grew,
partly because in the credits,
the women who were killed
were written as "female corpse."
They ended up changed that part though.
They were regarded as not actresses,
but just objects in the credits, some say.
"Midnight Runners" had a similar case.
The victims names were all there.
For example, who played a female college student.
The media affects society.
It's dangerous that people can see that movie
and think, "So there are people like that."
How is it compared to other movies?
The movie "Hope" dealt with child sexual abuse,
which is a similarly intense concept.
They decided to take out that one scene.
The scene was eventually forgotten.
Director Lee Junik, who shot it,
said he tried his best to not make it improper.
From the point of view of people who accept that,
they have to rethink their decision to accept it.
And many think that directors are the ones
who are in a position to be criticized.
Director Park Hunjeong, what do you think?
I said it wasn't gender-sensitive
and that it was missing something.
The funny thing about that, from some point of view,
is that I've made a series of films with similar
elements in the past.
"I Saw the Devil" and "New World" were like that
and target to male audiences.
- They were male-centered. / - I did many of those.
A few years ago, when those
kinds of movies came out, there wasn't much
general criticism for misogyny.
But now, those sentiments are being expressed,
I think that if people thought this way back then,
"I Saw the Devil" would have a similar movie score.
The power of the public is surprising.
What's the reason women are angry now?
Gender inequality and misogyny
have always been present.
But the reason they're expressing themselves over it...
What's the reason now?
It's because of a big issue from last year.
The murder at Gangnam Station in 2016.
This is an issue of survival to them.
They feel that as women, they can be murdered
or killed just for being a woman.
They see this as a way for them to survive.
And social media is widespread nowadays,
so people can give feedback together,
and they have a platform for that.
As a person who has studied abroad.
- You did? / - Yes, you didn't know?
I was in Australia for two and a half years.
Really?
Why are you so surprised?
You've got more layers than an onion!
I do have many.
When I was young, I saw the world as
men and women weren't seen differently, and there
wasn't much of a separation between the two.
But coming back here and thinking about it,
our parents' generation was like that,
and now we're in a period of change.
So this transition period must pass
for misogyny and misandry to change.
Now we're in a transition period, so things are more
highlighted, and that's where the conflict stems from.
I can understand and concede a bit to that.
Some people that say that this is an issue,
but they can understand it to a certain extent,
may be criticized by others for not being able
to recognize problems and get attacked for it.
So that's how the conflict is invited even more.
I'm a bit saddened and frightened
listening to such a rough topic.
As the host, I'll sum things up quickly.
So we can all understand.
Jeong Junho and I
are very different.
I don't like him, but we're close enough
for me to recognize our differences.
Actually, I don't think we're all that close.
The thing we haven't taken notice of
is what's included in sexual discrimination.
In recent dramas,
men grab women's wrists and pull them, (Source: SBS)
which are not problems at all in Korea.
But Korean dramas are exported.
Some foreign fans say those scenes
are a problem and feel uncomfortable.
There's something called ambivalence in psychology.
They want to be treated the same as men
but on the other hand, and this may be due to
clinging to the past or gender sensitivity,
but they still want men
to lead the way,
so in dramas,
just like Park Hyeonmin just said,
women won't feel butterflies.
Not long ago in an interview with Seol Kyunggu,
he said something,
probably since they were so close,
but he had to apologize for it.
I was there, and as soon as he said it...
I was so scared.
I was there.
Kim Namgil didn't introduce himself like that,
but as soon as Seolhyun was introduced like that,
I knew that would become an issue.
It seemed like he said that because she was
sensitive, but now I think he was being dull.
- Completely? / - No, everyone.
Many phrases have issues like this.
There's the word "actress."
We use it without thinking.
We think, "Well, a female actor is an actress."
But why do we only change the word for women?
There's no word for that for actors.
That's what they think.
That's presented as a problem.
But hearing this, from
what I've heard from Lee Miyeon and Kim Hyesu,
being an actress in Korea
is extremely difficult.
I don't understand actors that say that.
If an actress says they have it tough,
people will think that she saying
that it's tough because she's a woman.
(Director Mun Sori's movie had a similar theme)
I think we should express one thing again.
My KakaoTalk username is "Beautiful actor."
In Korean, the word implies female actress.
Do you mean your looks?
I think that's a false report.
Who?
Wouldn't it be best to change your ID?
Can't it be longer?
I don't know if you're laughing or crying now.
I think your ID is great.
Let's call it "cry-laughing."
(#ID: cry-laugh)
(Misogyny is a sensitivity issue - Jang Deokhyeon)
(I want movies anyone can watch relaxedly)
("Not knowing there's a problem is a problem")
(by Park Hyunmin) What do you all think?
Midnight Dinner Talk will be back next week.
That cry-laugh scene came out again.
That's all the news we have for today.
We'll be back next week.
Everyone, be happy!
