How do you become an entrepreneur? - Duration: 1:54.
- How do you become an entrepreneur.
Somebody just asked me this question.
I find it fascinating.
You don't really become an entrepreneur.
You just wake up one morning and your are one.
Meaning, you just go and do it.
You just start a company.
You start a business.
You go and do your own thing.
There's no class on how to become an entrepreneur.
It's just an entrepreneur is someone who starts a business
with their dream, with their vision
because you see things differently than everyone else,
and you feel the necessity to do it.
You're just compelled, right?
That's, I think, what entrepreneurism is.
How do you know if you're really an entrepreneur
or ready to be one?
One, are you willing to take massive amounts of risk?
I don't mean gambling risk.
The reality is, there's no guarantees.
When you work for someone else, while there's
still no guarantee, you know at the end of every two weeks
that you're gonna get a paycheck.
When you become an entrepreneur and you go all in
and you do your own thing, there's no guarantees.
You're the person that controls the revenue.
You're the person that controls the income,
and the jobs, and the clients, and the customers.
So, are you willing to take massive risks
and potentially eat ramen noodles for years?
You're gonna make, initially, probably,
a lot less money than you would taking a job.
Are you comfortable with that?
Number one and number two, do you have some burning desire
to tell the world about your idea, your concept,
your product, your service
because you know everyone has to have it?
Then you're an entrepreneur.
Go and do it.
If you don't have that stuff,
if you don't have the drive, the fire, the passion,
then you're not an entrepreneur yet.
It doesn't mean you can't become one,
but you need to be willing to take risks,
you need to have some burning desire to get some
product, service, or idea out to the rest of the world
and be willing to eat ramen noodles for a long time.
That's probably going to happen.

Trinidad, Cuba | House of Peanuts (Casa del Maní) - Duration: 6:24.
We've arrived to Trinidad after a 9 hour bus ride!
We're going to explore the town. We have no plan.
Maybe we'll go on top of the viewpoint tower to see Trinidad from high up!
Apparently, Trinidad is one of the most beautiful colonial caribbean cities!
Trinidad is quite unique and is considered as one of the best preserved colonial cities in the Caribbean.
We've heard that it's as if time has stopped in 1850 in this town...
And it's true! We truly felt in another era.
This attracts a lot of tourists, which is what mainly finances the town, among other things.
All the streets are made out of cobblestone and there are many musicians a bit everywhere.
Trinidad is surrounded by mountains and the sea, which makes the town even more diverse and splendid.
It's so hot in Trinidad, eh?
Oh yes, we're sweating!
There are newlyweds right here!
They just got married.
It's so sweet.
And there are musicians too...
They're all dressed the same, I think that's rad.
Wow, I love it!
Now we're climbing high up in the tower.
Apparently this tower is the highest point in Trinidad.
And we can see the sea!
Almost there... there are many stairs!
Oh Gab, now that's a view!
Yay, we wrote our names with everyone!
Right now, we're walking towards the House of Peanuts, "Casa del Mani".
And it's a family which sells lots of products made of peanuts.
And actually, they make the best peanut butter we've ever tasted.
So here is the place, this is what it looks like.
It's filled with stuff made out of peanuts.
They sell peanuts, peanut butter, coconut-peanut pies...
(In Spanish) Hello!
Can we ask you a few questions?
Because we have a project about things in Cuba.
Would you mind answering them please?
No!
Okay the little lady doesn't want to answer our questions but her son, the owner, will.
So, what is this shop called?
It is "The House of Peanuts" in Trinidad.
And when was it opened?
We are open since January this year (2016)
Oh only this year!
So only 5 months?
No like... 4 months.
And this is your house, right?
Yes, yes.
And how did you organize everything?
Everything is made of peanuts.
And how did you get the idea to do this?
To make everything with peanuts.
Well, when I first opened this place, there were NO peanuts anywhere here in Trinidad.
Oh, no peanuts at all!
I go to another province and bring peanuts back here.
Oh ok, from another province! And you bring it all back here.
And the whole process is made here.
And is it because you love peanuts so much? And other people too?
Yes, the people like peanuts.
Yes us too!
Some people are addicted to peanuts, just like...
Like... like they're addicted to drugs or anything else!
Yes yes yes, totally!
Do we have more questions?
Ok that's all, thank you!
Here is a perfect example of people playing dominos.
And it's very common, people love it here.
We are in Trinidad, by the way, but we saw this in Havana, Viñales...
And we're going to Santiago, we will see if it's popular too.
But they're really concentrated and by the way, we pass by them multiple times a day...
And they're always here playing dominos, all the time, for hours and hours!
So yeah...
It's cool.
You know at the Casa del Mani earlier? (Ignore Maya's mask)
We bought a peanut block.
But what we did is that we added some peanut butter on the peanut block...
Man, we're kind of sad aren't we.
And it's delicious.
The Peanut Butter Song!
Hey! So we went back to the House of Peanuts.
We bought 7 thingies like this of peanut butter.
It's the best. If you come to Cuba, you have to come to Trinidad specifically to try this peanut butter.
No joke.
And we bought the block of peanuts again.
We're going to eat it with....
PEANUT BUTTER!!!
Woah, you have way more than me!
Peanut butter?
Maya didn't even want to go back originally.
But how can it possibly taste this good?
He puts drugs in it.
"La Droga".
Good morning. It's 7 am sharp.
We're leaving at 8 am towards Santiago.
At the extreme Eastern end of Cuba.
"El Oriente".

Ask A Bookkeeper Podcast Ep 2: Sekou Andrews Poetic Voice - Duration: 9:54.
♫ Ask me anything
♫ And I'll help you find your way for adventuring
♫ This could be our lucky day
♫ Never fear my dear
♫ If the answer is isn't plain to see
- Hi I'm Penny, the Practical Professional and this
is Ingrid Edstrom of Polymath Bookkeeping.
- And we are here on Ask a Bookkeeper today with
the one and only Sekou Andrews.
Welcome, thank you so much for joining us today Sekou.
Sekou is a fantastic speaker, trainer and poetic voice.
He is the founder and CEO of Sekouworld Inc.
And is joining us today from California.
Sekou, can you start off telling us, what is Poetic Voice?
- Well thank you for having me on the show.
Both you Ingrid and to you Penny.
- Yeah!
- It's a joy to be here with both of you guys and I
am the creator of Poetic Voice and the simplest definition
of Poetic Voice is basically a style of speaking
that combines inspirational speaking seamlessly
with spoken word poetry.
- Well and having seen you in action at Quickbooks Connect
the last few years, it's absolutely amazing so powerful.
- Shout out to Quickbooks Connect.
- Woohoo!
- Woo!
- So how does the Poetic Voice help small business owners?
Where does that branch over?
- The intention behind Poetic Voice was simply me saying
I believe that there was a more dynamic way to communicate
to lead and influence others, to create and experience
where audiences and clients don't have to choose
between the information and the inspiration.
And a lot of times as I'm sure you can relate to Penny,
when there isn't an existing space for you, then
you have to create that space.
- So true.
- And I wanted to create that space through Poetic Voice
that basically allows people to understand how their
data and information can be embedded and merged
more powerfully with their stories and information
to effect people on a human level while still delivering
the business messages.
That's how Poetic Voice can help small business owners.
- I own Penny's Pies, so why would I want to be
inspired to become a leader?
How would that help my business?
- A lot of small business owners don't think of themselves
as leaders, and don't train themselves as leaders.
I was included in that.
There was this sense of the only person that I need to lead
or keep up with is myself, my own hustle my own aspirations
and dreams, but the fact of the matter is
the moment that you begin to expand your business
beyond yourself then you are automatically in a position
of leadership because now you're saying I need to
lead others that are looking to me for guidance,
I need to lead my customers to my product,
I need to lead my customers away from my competition
and I need to lead my industry in a sense.
But even if it's just me recognizing that people are
looking to me as a representative of my industry.
- Well that definitely makes a lot of sense.
How would one start that process?
- The first part of it is surround yourself with community.
Surround yourself with community that is smarter than you
so that you can learn from them.
Surround yourself with people who you find incredible
value in and they also recognize and find value in you.
The second thing is to invest in your education.
Be a lifelong learner.
It's also to make sure that you strengthen and amplify
the power of your own voice.
- Sekou I love what you were saying about community
as well as education, particularly since that is exactly
what we're focusing on here by creating the
Ask A Bookkeeper community and this educational series.
How do we encourage our community to step up to that
challenge, each of us within our own businesses
and with each other?
- I took an amazing trip to Israel.
Taking a trip that was through the Schusterman Foundation
a trip called Reality, where we went to just sort
of explore collaboration and entrepreneurship and
social impact with Israel as a backdrop.
After the long flights and landing you know
gathering everybody's baggage and figuring out how
to get our cell phones operational and meeting everyone
and so forth and just that time you're just like okay,
let me just go to the hotel and just decompress,
take a shower and relax, maybe get a little room service,
pamper, pamper, pamper, you know the way that we like
to do it, no instead they sent us out to the middle of
a goat herding field.
(goat bleating)
It was sort of like sheperding 101.
So they said go, get these goats from point A to point B.
One of the things that they were saying is one of the
most effective ways for you to shepherd is from the back
and part of the problem is that we kept trying to
shepherd from the front.
In leadership often happens from the back because
what we were doing is we were blocking the vision.
And so leadership from the rear became an incredibly
important lesson for us, and I think it's a great lesson
for others, how do I impact this business, impact my
community, impact this industry on whatever large
or small scale that I'm trying to impact it,
because we are trying to impact it.
Even as Penny's Pie Shops.
You got into Penny's Pie Shop because you said,
I can make an awesome pie and I'm tired of tasting
these horrible pies and I know that pies can be better.
And I guess nobody else is gonna do it,
so I'm gonna do it myself.
- Yeah!
That's right.
- But at the end of the day, the moment you step into
that space, you are stepping into the space of a leader.
- Oh, that's amazing.
- Absolutely, and I think that that's something that
is particularly potent for accounting professionals
like myself, and Penny in your pie shop.
You're at a great position to be able to do that.
Checking in with your customers when they're buying pie,
finding out what is their background, why are they
coming to your pie shop.
- The first thing I try to get you to do is say you
have to tell a story.
And what that does is it makes you remember that
you are a storyteller.
And all you need to do is build the bridge between
the stories that you tell naturally, your personal life
and the business stories that your customers want to
hear as people.
Because they are persons.
How do you connect your business objectives and messaging
to them as people?
- There's a new pie shop that just opened up just a few
blocks away, and it's caused me a little bit of stress.
I've already lost a few customers.
See they're selling their pies cheaper than I am,
but I feel like they're not as good of quality.
So what can I do to set myself apart from them?
- It's what you as a small business owner can learn to do
when you are selling pies, Penny.
You can tell the story of each pie, you can
create a story for each type of pie that you have.
Or, you start asking other people about their stories
related to pie.
What is your favorite pie story?
And you begin gathering these stories, and you get people
connected to each other through your product.
- If your competition is charging just a little bit
less than you are, then they're just competing with
you on price, there's other areas that you can compete on.
- I guess that's where it really feels like is, they might
be starting to sell more pies than me, but I'm really
building up a community.
I tell stories, they tell me stories and most importantly
we create stories.
- Can you tell us a little bit about the classes
that you do and what kinds of business owners might
benefit from your classes and where they can find
that information?
- I certainly welcome you to visit my website,
SekouAndrews.com, S-E-K-O-U Andrews.com.
And learn more about what it is that I'm doing
and if you want to be part of one of my upcoming
speaker trainings I do a free webinar training,
make sure you go to rockstarspeakersecrets.com
I would love to help you get mighty on any stage you touch.
- Sekou I love the fact that on your website
SekouAndrews.com, you've got a bit button that
says inspire me.
(laughing)
So I want everybody to go to Sekou's website right now
and click that button, Sekou has a fantastic email list
and when you get that first email, reply really quick
and let him know that you heard about him from
the Ask a Bookkeeper Show.
If there's one, one big juicy takeaway that we would
love to leave our audience of small business owners with,
what would that be?
- My big one juicy takeaway would be.
Get to know your puppets!
(laughing)
Get to know your puppets, baby!
Puppets are gonna help you rule the world.
Mine is Cookie Monster up until now, but now, Penny
and Cookie Monster share a little space together.
- Oh, I'm honored, thank you Sekou.
- Well thank you so much Sekou, we really appreciate it
and we will talk with you more soon.
This is Ingrid Edstrom and Penny the Practical Professional
thanks so much Sekou Andrews for being on our show.
