Waching daily Oct 17 2017

It's October, aka breast cancer awareness month.

There's so much pink stuff everywhere that no doubt by now you are aware: breast cancer

exists.

But that doesn't tell us about what to actually expect when someone we love receives what

can be a very frightening diagnosis.

Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, after skin cancer

-- although anyone can get it.

Fortunately, the rate at which we're learning about this disease, and getting better at

treating it, means patients have a lot more options, and a lot better chances than they

did 100 years ago.

In fact, we're making progress SO fast that there are more options than there were 10

or 20 years ago.

And a year from now there will probably be more options than there are today.

So we're going to tell you how things have changed and what to expect.

Breast cancer was documented by the ancient Egyptians in a 3600 year old medical papyrus,

and for most of history between then and now, the best option available was to try to cut

it out.

The first modern breast cancer treatment was the Halsted radical mastectomy, introduced

in the 1880s.

It's even less nice than it sounds, and involved removing not only the breast, but

some of the underlying chest muscle, surrounding lymph nodes, and skin.

These days, surgery is usually more conservative, and it's often possible to preserve some

of the breast while removing just the lump or affected region.

One reason surgery today isn't as nasty is that we've developed more tools to fight cancer

since the 19th century.

Radiation like gamma rays can also be used to kill cancer cells.

This radiation causes physical breaks in DNA, and cancer cells with badly damaged DNA can't

divide, so those cells die.

Early radiation therapy used needles made of radium placed near the tumor.

These days, for breast cancer, radiation will often come from an external beam, or a doctor

may insert a small amount of radioactive material near the tumor during treatment.

Not everyone with breast cancer needs radiation, but those who do will generally receive it

after surgery.

Then there's the topic of chemotherapy.

It's a scary-sounding word, but it literally just means therapy with chemicals -- or as

we usually prefer to call them, drugs.

If we were naming it today we might be more likely to call it pharmacotherapy, or just

plain drug therapy.

But we're not naming it today, so we have chemotherapy.

The main goal of chemotherapy is to kill cancer cells, and these drugs employ a broad variety

of chemical tricks to do just that.

From cisplatin to paclitaxel, almost every chemo drug has a slightly different way of

killing cancer cells.

H

Chemotherapy reaches the entire body as it's taken in pill form or through IV.

That's good to catch all the nasty cells if the cancer has spread, but not great for

healthy cells that get caught by the chemo.

Chemo is really toxic to cancer cells but it's harmful for healthy cells too.

That's why it tends to have side effects, though for many patients those aren't so

bad.

And chemo isn't the only chemistry-based tool we've developed.

One way breast cancer is different from most other cancers is that its growth is often

driven by our hormones, notably estrogen.

Estrogen enters cells and binds to a receptor in the breast that tells them to grow.

Many breast cancers take advantage of this receptor to snag the estrogen signal and use

it to grow bigger.

The drug tamoxifen came into use in the 1970s.

Tamoxifen blockslatches onto the estrogen receptor in the breast, so estrogen can't

send its growth signal within the cancer cell.

This has been a huge success because so many breast cancers involve the estrogen receptor.

The major disadvantage is that eventually, cancer becomes resistant to the estrogen receptor

That is, it keeps growing even without the signal, so blocking it is no use.

Even with tamoxifen, patients might still need other chemo treatments.

Trastuzumab was introduced in 1998, which was another big breakthrough.

It is a targeted therapy, which is kind of a buzzword these days, but it's also a genuinely

exciting direction for cancer therapy.

Unlike chemo, which is distributed to the entire body, targeted therapies make a beeline

for the tumor, so fewer healthy cells are killed resulting in fewer sideeffects.

Trastuzumab is a kind of antibody, the Y-shaped molecules our immune systems use to target

and bind to harmful invaders like viruses.

Trastuzumab, instead, binds to a molecule on the surface of some breast cancers called

HER2.

HER2 is another one of those growth receptors, a bit like the estrogen receptor, and breast

tumors in roughly one in five patients have an abnormal amount too much of it on the surface

of their cells.

Trastuzumab blocks HER2 a bit like tamoxifen blocks the estrogen receptor.

And it works really well to improve the survival of the minority of patients whose tumors have

abnormal HER2.

Other up-and-coming therapies based on our immune systems are even more promising.

Some new options might help the patient's immune system spot cancer and destroy it,

and there's even talk of cancer vaccines.

But most patients aren't likely to see those just yet.

Someone being treated for breast cancer in 1917 didn't have much to look forward to

besides a nasty surgery with a relatively low success rate.

In 2017, they can expect much more: a combination of treatments tailored to the disease they

have and its molecular profile.

The chemistry of modern treatments is designed to target the biology of tumor cells with

unprecedented precision.

By the next time breast cancer awareness month comes around, there will probably be treatments

we didn't even think of when we were writing this thing.

Hey, if you're watching this in the future, what's it like?

Let us know in the comments, and thanks for stopping by.

[Deep Kyushu] UNTOUCHED LAND OF IWOJIMA 薩摩硫黄島に行ってみた - Duration: 10:03.

(bright funky music)

- Ah cool, look at this hangar.

Look at these little baby planes.

(speaking in foreign language)

- This is like, the kind of plane

that usually like...

- Goes to Alaska?

- No I was gonna say crashes.

I was really tired cause we got up at like 5 a.m.,

but now that I've seen the plane I'm like.

This is so cool.

It's gonna be fun.

(speaking foreign language)

With it's deep valleys, subtropical climate,

active volcanoes and natural hot springs,

Japan's southwest island of Kyushu,

is a fiery force of nature.

With some of the most breathtaking scenery in Japan.

Come with Tatsu and I as we travel across the island,

making new discoveries,

and visiting some old favorites along the way.

(relaxing music)

Today, Tatsu and I are heading to Iwojima,

off the coast of Kagoshima prefecture.

There are only two ferries a week connecting Iwojima,

to the rest of Kyushu.

So if you're visiting any other day,

the only way to get there, is by private plane.

It is home to Iodake, a currently active volcano,

that emits sulfur dioxide.

"Io" in Japanese means sulfur.

Thus the name "sulfur island".

There are actually a few sulfur islands in Japan,

so just to clarify, this is not the Iwojima

that was captured by the U.S. during the second World War.

Bye.

Bye.

(laughs)

Tatsu and I were just about to cross the road,

and we saw this guy and we both just screamed,

and freaked out. (speaks foreign language)

Bye.

(upbeat music)

How is it Tatsu?

- Oh wow, I was just. Holy, Oh!

(speaking foreign language)

Look at these. (speaking foreign language)

- This is very beautiful. (speaking foreign language)

- Ah, perfect.

- Awesome so we'll just park here.

And let's take some photos.

- Let's do it.

(yells)

- This is how Tatsu get's when he sees beautiful scenery.

(laughs)

- I can't pull out my seatbelt.

- I guess you're stuck here.

Oh my God.

(relaxing music)

Iwojima is a registered Geopark,

and the typical tourists who make the voyage,

all the way out here are generally the types,

that can appreciate this kind of natural,

untouched wild beauty.

Google Map is taking us through some weird back road.

(laughs)

So because it's an island the weather changes,

often very suddenly, without warning.

It just started raining, but hopefully the rain's not gonna,

continue for the rest of the day.

But we've just arrived at the famous hot springs,

on the island, and I thought it would be like a facility,

with like a parking lot, but it's not, this is it.

We've got our rental van parked right here,

and I think it's just right over there.

(relaxing music)

(cheers)

- Yes you can.

Just gotta be fast.

(laughs)

Oh god, oh god.

(speaks foreign language)

So Tatsu is shooting the hot spring,

we've been keeping an eye on it,

to see of the waves are coming anywhere near it.

And they do get pretty high,

but they don't exactly envelop this one,

so we might have a chance to hop in there.

Oh no!

Oh he's fine. (laughs)

So I'm standing by.

Outside.

Naked, like it ain't no thing.

You might be asking yourself,

"like jeez isn't this incredibly awkward?"

Yeah.

(bright cheerful music)

Located at the base of the volcano,

these hot springs can get as hot as 50 degrees Celsius,

or 122 degrees Fahrenheit at the source.

Thankfully though, the splashing waves

help cool the pools down to a comfortable temperature.

But I mean this is exhilarating.

Would you rate this as a must-see location in Japan?

- I would say this is, a hidden place.

- This is something you should try once in your life.

I feel like when it comes to "onsen",

we are in our most natural state.

We're in a totally natural hot spring,

right in front of the natural ocean.

Which is unpredictable and wild, and a little bit scary.

And we're standing here, I'm standing here, naked,

which is also wild, and a little bit scary.

But you know it's a good experience.

I'm glad we did it.

- I don't want to say, but this is awesome.

Awesome. - Awesome.

- Awesome. - Awesome!

- My vocabulary awesome!

In the 1960's, at its peak, Iwojima was a mining town,

and it had around 600 residents.

In the 70's, Yamaha opened a resort on the island,

and imported peacocks to the facility.

The resort went bankrupt, the mine closed,

and the population fell to just over 100 people.

But the peacocks went on to inhabit the island,

where they run wild, even today.

I should also mention, there aren't any hotels,

or restaurants on the island either.

But this is a great oppurtunity

to stay in a locally owned guest house instead.

Besides, unless you've brought your own food,

it's the only way to make sure

that you get to eat every single day.

(speaking foreign language)

- And we've got some (speaking foreign language).

And some (speaking foreign language),

stewed fish with some (speaking foreign language) I think,

and then we got some fried fish over here,

this is really cool.

I love eating at other people's houses,

cause then you get to see what they would serve and stuff.

- It's actually like super good.

- I know, I'm really excited.

Because it's so hard to bring food to the island,

you really appreciate having a warm meal to go home,

or wake up to, and chatting with the guest house mama,

is always a treat too.

(speaking foreign language)

On this day, a typhoon is approaching the island,

and this ferry is the last ferry,

until the typhoon is passed.

Residents are drawn to the port

to say goodbye to the visitors.

And the resident western African percussionist group,

comes to welcome the incoming ship,

with a mix of percussion and dance.

(beating drums)

(speaking foreign language)

And just like that,

it's time for us to head back to the main island.

(speaking foreign language)

This ferry is pretty big.

And thankfully it has several rooms,

for passengers to rest and relax in,

during the long journey back to Kagoshima.

This is really comfortable.

So the ferry's gonna take four hours,

for us to get to Kagoshima,

so we won't get in until 8 p.m. tonight.

So I'm glad that there's beds and blankets,

so I can just take a nap.

So how about you?

Would you like to visit a place like Iwojima?

Let me know in the comments.

And if you wanna see more of this type of video.

Please show your support by liking, subscribing,

and sharing with your friends.

If you want to see more of Tatsu's work,

make sure you follow his YouTube channel, and his Instagram.

Thanks so much for watching.

Bye!

ANNOUNCER: RECEIVE YOUR COPY OF JOYCE'S NEW BOOK,

"UNSHAKABLE TRUST" TODAY.

[MUSIC]

JOYCE: STUDYING THE WORD OF GOD IS LIFE-CHANGING.

READING THE BIBLE IS GOOD, BUT STUDYING IT IS LIKE SO MUCH

BETTER THAN JUST READING.

AND SO, I'M ON A MISSION TO HELP PEOPLE LEARN TO STUDY GOD'S WORD

AND IN DOING THAT, I'VE BEEN TEACHING ON SOME OF THE BOOKS OF

THE BIBLE AND I'M ACTUALLY GONNA TURN THEM INTO BOOKS THAT I'VE

WRITTEN.

SO, WE ACTUALLY ARE IN THE--RIGHT TOWARD THE END OF

COLOSSIANS CHAPTER 3, BUT DON'T FEEL LIKE THAT YOU'RE GONNA FEEL

LOST BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT.

THERE'S SO MANY GREAT LESSONS IN EVERY CHAPTER THAT YOU'RE GONNA

GET A LOT OUT OF THIS.

SO, COLOSSIANS 3:16, WELL, FIRST OF ALL, COLOSSIANS 3:15 SAYS,

"LET THE PEACE OF GOD RULE IN YOUR HEART AS AN UMPIRE."

HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE SOME SITUATIONS IN YOUR LIFE RIGHT

NOW, YOU DID THINGS THAT YOU DIDN'T HAVE PEACE ABOUT AND NOW

YOU'RE PAYING THE PRICE FOR IT?

OKAY, SO, WE'RE GONNA LEARN FROM THAT MISTAKE TO FOLLOW PEACE.

IT'S ONE OF THE MOST PRIMARY WAYS THAT WE HEAR FROM GOD.

PEOPLE ALWAYS WONDER, "WELL, HOW CAN I HEAR FROM GOD?

HOW CAN I HEAR FROM GOD?

HOW CAN I KNOW WHAT GOD'S WILL IS?"

WELL, THERE'S MANY DIFFERENT WAYS THAT GOD LEADS US BUT PEACE

HAS TO BE THE UMPIRE IN OUR HEART.

THEN COLOSSIANS 3:16 SAYS, "LET THE WORD

[SPOKEN BY] CHRIST (THE MESSIAH) HAVE ITS HOME [IN YOUR HEARTS

AND MINDS] AND LET IT DWELL IN YOU IN [ALL ITS] RICHNESS, AS

YOU TEACH AND ADMONISH AND TRAIN ONE ANOTHER IN ALL INSIGHT

AND INTELLIGENCE AND WISDOM [IN SPIRITUAL THINGS, AND AS YOU

SING] PSALMS AND HYMNS AND SPIRITUAL SONGS, MAKING

MELODY TO GOD WITH [HIS] GRACE IN YOUR HEART."

NOW, I DON'T DO THE SINGING TOO WELL, SO I JUST HUM.

I'M PRETTY GOOD AT HUMMING, MAKING MELODY IN MY HEART.

YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS TALKING ABOUT REALLY?

IT'S TALKING ABOUT LIVING YOUR DAILY LIFE, KEEPING THINGS

INSIDE IN YOUR SOUL PRETTY SIMPLE.

IN OTHER WORDS, MEDITATE ON THE WORD OF GOD, THINK ABOUT

THE WORD.

NOW, JUST ASK YOURSELF, HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU ACTUALLY SPEND

THROUGHOUT THE DAY LETTING SCRIPTURE ROLL OVER AND OVER IN

YOUR MIND?

YOU KNOW, WE HEAR ALL THE TIME MEDITATE ON THE WORD BUT HEARING

SOMETHING DOESN'T DO US ANY GOOD IF WE DON'T DO IT.

ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO GET ROOTED AND GROUNDED IN THE TRUTH

OF A SCRIPTURE IS TO TAKE EVEN ONE OR TWO OF THEM AND JUST

THROUGHOUT THE DAY MEDITATE ON AND THINK ABOUT WHAT THAT MEANS.

IT'S LIKE MEDITATING ON THE WORD IS EQUIVALENT TO CHEWING YOUR

FOOD.

YOU KNOW, YOU CAN GO TO CHURCH AND YOU CAN GET A SERMON AND YOU

CAN SWALLOW THAT DOWN BUT IF YOU WILL TAKE ONE OR TWO PRINCIPLES

THAT YOU HEARD AND YOU WILL THEN CONTINUE TO THINK ABOUT THAT AND

MEDITATE ON THAT, THINK ABOUT IT AND MEDITATE ON IT, IT WOULD BE

THE DIFFERENCE LIKE IN SWALLOWING YOUR FOOD WHOLE OR

ACTUALLY CHEWING IT WELL SO YOU GET THE NUTRITION OUT OF IT.

SOME PEOPLE GET INDIGESTION BECAUSE THEY DON'T CHEW THEIR

FOOD AND SOME OF US MAYBE HAVE WORD INDIGESTION.

WE'VE GOT SO MUCH OF THE WORD IN US FLOATING AROUND IN OUR HEAD

BUT WE'RE NOT ACTUALLY GETTING THE BENEFIT OUT OF IT THAT WE

SHOULD.

DO YOU KNOW AS MUCH WORD AS THERE IS THAT GOES FORTH IN THE

EARTH TODAY, THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE FOR THE CHURCH TO BE

SO IMMATURE.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: I MEAN, IT'S REALLY--I MEAN THERE'S A LOT OF GREAT

CHRISTIANS, A LOT OF GREAT PEOPLE THAT REPRESENT GOD WELL

AND JUST SO HONORABLE BUT THERE ARE SO MANY DINGBAT CHRISTIANS

THAT JUST RUN AROUND WITH THEIR BUMPER STICKERS AND THEIR

CHRISTIAN JEWELRY AND HAVE BEHAVIOR THAT IS JUST ABSOLUTELY

UNBELIEVABLE.

AND PART OF IT IS IS BECAUSE WE GET MIXED UP THINKING WELL, IF

WE GOT IT UNDERLINED, WE KNOW IT.

WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT?

YOU CAN COLOR IN YOUR BIBLE ALL DAY LONG, THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU

KNOW ANYTHING.

THE ONLY WAY THAT WE KNOW THAT WE KNOW IS IF WE'RE DOING IT IN

OUR EVERYDAY LIFE.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: SO, DON'T SPEND YOUR DAY WORRYING.

WHAT'S GOING ON INSIDE OF YOU?

ASK YOURSELF, "WHAT'S MY INNER LIFE LIKE?"

DON'T SPEND YOUR DAY WORRYING.

DON'T SPEND YOUR DAY THINKING ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT'S WRONG

WITH EVERYBODY YOU KNOW.

UH-OH, REWIND.

DON'T SPEND YOUR DAY THINKING ABOUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH

EVERYBODY YOU KNOW.

COME ON, JUST BECAUSE THE ENEMY OFFERS US A THOUGHT THAT DOESN'T

MEAN WE HAVE TO TAKE IT AND MEDITATE ON IT.

REPLACE THE STINKING THINKING WITH SOME OF THE PRINCIPLES IN

GOD'S WORD.

YOU KNOW, IN MY NATURAL ME, WHICH THANK GOD THAT OLD ME IS

DEAD, I JUST HAVE TO REMIND IT ONCE IN A WHILE THAT IT IS.

I WOULD TEND TO BE MAYBE A BIT SUSPICIOUS LIKE WELL, JUST,

YEAH, WELL, WHAT ARE YOU REALLY AFTER?

WELL, YEAH WELL, WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY THAT?

AND, YOU KNOW, VERY OFTEN MAYBE SOME KIND OF A BAD THOUGHT WILL

COME INTO MY MIND ABOUT SOMEBODY, AND YOU KNOW WHAT?

A BAD THOUGHT BEING PUT INTO YOUR MIND IS NOT SIN, IT'S WHAT

YOU DO WITH IT AFTER THE ENEMY PUTS IT IN THERE.

DO YOU TAKE IT AS YOUR OWN AND CONTINUE TO MEDITATE ON IT?

DO YOU KNOW THAT CAN JUST GET YOURSELF IN AN ABSOLUTE

EMOTIONAL TANTRUM JUST BY THINKING WRONG THINGS?

I MEAN, ANY ONE OF US CAN SIT DOWN AND GET OURSELVES EXTREMELY

UPSET ANY TIME WE WANT TO JUST BY THINKING ABOUT ALL THE THINGS

THAT WE DON'T LIKE AND ALL THE THINGS THAT PEOPLE DO THAT

IRRITATE US.

YOUR THOUGHTS DO BELONG TO YOU AND YOU CAN CHOOSE WHAT YOU

WANNA THINK.

AND THERE ARE NUMEROUS TIMES WHEN I WILL HAVE TO SAY, NOPE,

LOVE ALWAYS BELIEVES THE VERY BEST.

LOVE IS PATIENT, LOVE IS KIND, LOVE IS HUMBLE, LOVE IS NOT

JEALOUS.

LOVE ALWAYS BELIEVES THE VERY BEST.

REMINDING YOURSELF OF WHAT THE WORD HAS TO SAY IS WHAT HELPS IT

GET ROOTED DOWN ON THE INSIDE OF YOU SO EVENTUALLY THEN THE FIRST

RESPONSE IS NOT TO THINK THE WORST THING, BUT THE FIRST

RESPONSE BEGINS TO THINK THE BEST THING, AMEN?

AND I'M NOT MUCH OF A SINGER, BUT I CAN TELL YA, GOD'S GIVEN

US MUSIC FOR A GREAT PURPOSE AND IT IS HELPFUL JUST TO EVEN--I

MEAN IF YOU CAN SING, THAT'S GREAT, BUT IF YOU CAN'T, THEN

YOU CAN HUM.

YOU CAN MAKE MELODY IN YOUR HEART UNTO THE LORD AND IT KEEPS

ALL THE OTHER JUNK OUT.

SO, WHAT'S GOING ON INSIDE OF YOU?

IF IT'S NOT RIGHT, CHANGE IT.

COLOSSIANS 3:17, "WHATEVER YOU DO,

WHATEVER YOU DO, WHATEVER YOU DO [NO MATTER WHAT IT IS],

DO IT IN THE NAME OF JESUS."

WELL, WELL, HOW MANY THINGS WOULD HAVE TO CHANGE IN OUR LIFE

IF WE SAY, "WELL, I JUST THINK I'LL WATCH THIS MOVIE

IN THE NAME OF JESUS"?

[AUDIENCE LAUGHING]

JOYCE: HMM, ARE THOSE GUILTY LAUGHS OR LAUGHS OF AGREEMENT,

I DON'T KNOW.

[AUDIENCE LAUGHING]

JOYCE: EVEN SOMETIMES THE WAY--LET ME JUST MEDDLE

FOR A MINUTE.

EVEN SOMETIMES THE WAY CHRISTIAN WOMEN DRESS IT'S LIKE--

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: ANYWAY, I'M NOT GONNA CAMP ON THAT BUT, YOU KNOW, IF

YOU CAN'T--IF WE CAN'T DO IT IN JESUS' NAME, WHEN YOU GO TO

LUNCH WITH A FRIEND, IF YOU CAN'T HAVE THE CONVERSATION

YOU'RE HAVING IN JESUS' NAME, UH-OH.

THESE ARE REAL THINGS--THESE ARE LIFE-CHANGING PRINCIPLES.

PEOPLE SAY, "I WANNA KNOW WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY LIFE."

READ THE BOOK.

IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, AMEN?

"DO EVERYTHING IN THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS AND IN

[DEPENDENCE UPON] HIM."

DON'T THINK BECAUSE YOU'VE DONE SOMETHING A HUNDRED TIMES AND

YOU'VE GOTTEN PRETTY GOOD AT IT THAT NOW YOU DON'T NEED GOD.

EVERYTHING WE DO, WE NEED TO SAY, "LORD, I DO THIS YOUR NAME

AND I DO IT DEPENDING ON YOU BECAUSE I KNOW THAT I AM NOTHING

WITHOUT YOU."

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: NOW, THE PART YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR,

"WIVES, BE SUBJECT TO YOUR HUSBANDS."

I WAS TEXTING WITH A FRIEND OF MINE WHO'S--ACTUALLY, HE'S OUR

ATTORNEY AND HE LIVES HERE IN TULSA.

AND I WAS TEXTING WITH HIM THIS MORNING HE SAID, "I CAN'T WAIT

TO COME OUT OF THAT MEETING WITH A SUBMISSIVE WIFE."

[AUDIENCE LAUGHING]

JOYCE: AND DAVE SAID THAT THIS MORNING, "I'M LOOKING

FORWARD TO HAVING A SUBMISSIVE WIFE."

I SAID, "YOU KNOW WHAT?

I'M AT THE MAXIMUM OF WHAT YOU'RE EVER GONNA GET SO--"

[AUDIENCE LAUGHING]

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: SO, THIS IS IT, THERE'S NO MORE TO GET.

I'VE GONE AS FAR AS I CAN GO.

[AUDIENCE LAUGHING]

JOYCE: BUT I WANNA--I DON'T WANNA JUST READ VERSE 18.

I WANNA READ 18 THROUGH 22 BECAUSE I--IT REALLY ANNOYS ME

WHEN PEOPLE KEEP PICKING OUT CERTAIN SCRIPTURES AND MAKING

A BIG DEAL OUT OF ONE THING WITHOUT READING EVERYTHING

THAT'S AROUND IT.

SO, I PERSONALLY AM MORE INTERESTED IN VERSE 19 THAN 18

AND 19 SAYS, "HUSBANDS, LOVE YOUR WIVES."

FIRST OF ALL, I TOLD DAVE THIS MORNING, I SAID, "YOU KNOW,

I LOVE THE APOSTLE PAUL BUT HE WRITES ALL THIS STUFF ABOUT

WOMEN.

HE DIDN'T HAVE A WIFE."

[AUDIENCE LAUGHING]

JOYCE: HOWEVER, PETER DID HAVE ONE, HE SAID THE SAME THING

SO WE CAN'T GET OUT OF IT.

SO, "HUSBANDS LOVE YOUR WIVES--" LET'S JUST READ THE WHOLE THING.

"WIVES, BE SUBJECT TO YOUR HUSBANDS [SUBORDINATE AND ADAPT

YOURSELVES TO THEM]," WHEW!

THAT'S HARD TO EVEN READ.

[AUDIENCE LAUGHING]

JOYCE: "AS IS RIGHT AND FITTING AND YOUR PROPER DUTY

TO THE LORD.

HUSBANDS, LOVE YOUR WIVES [BE AFFECTIONATE AND SYMPATHETIC--"

I LOVE THAT.

"AND DO NOT BE HARSH OR BITTER OR RESENTFUL."

THERE'S OTHER SCRIPTURES THAT SAY THAT IF A MAN DOESN'T TREAT

HIS WIFE RIGHT, HIS PRAYERS WON'T GET ANSWERED.

"CHILDREN, OBEY YOUR PARENTS IN EVERYTHING, FOR THIS IS PLEASING

TO THE LORD."

I LIKE THAT SCRIPTURE.

"FATHERS, DO NOT PROVOKE OR IRRITATE OR FRET YOUR CHILDREN

[DON'T BE HARD ON THEM OR HARASS THEM], LEST THEY BECOME

DISCOURAGED AND SULLEN AND MOROSE AND FEEL INFERIOR--"

DON'T YOU LOVE THAT?

A PARENT WHO CONSTANTLY IS NEVER SATISFIED WITH WHAT THEIR KIDS

ARE DOING, YOU'RE BUILDING INFERIORITY IN THEM.

YOU'RE MAKING THEM INSECURE.

"AND THEY BECOME FRUSTRATED.

[DO NOT BREAK THEIR SPIRIT.]

SERVANTS, OBEY IN EVERYTHING THOSE WHO ARE YOUR EARTHLY

MASTERS," THAT'S EMPLOYEES OBEY YOUR BOSS, "NOT ONLY WHEN THEIR

EYES ARE ON YOU AS PLEASERS OF MEN, BUT IN SIMPLICITY OF

PURPOSE [WITH ALL YOUR HEART]

BECAUSE OF YOUR REVERENCE FOR THE LORD AND AS A SINCERE

EXPRESSION OF YOUR DEVOTION TO HIM."

NOW, I DON'T CARE WHERE YOU WORK, WHEN YOU GO, YOU NEED TO

GO WITH THE THOUGHT IN MIND THAT YOU'RE THERE TO SERVE GOD.

SO, THEREFORE YOU APPLY ALL THE PRINCIPLES THAT YOU BELIEVE

WOULD PLEASE GOD LIKE EXCELLENCE.

YOU DON'T JUST DO WHAT'S RIGHT WHEN YOUR EMPLOYER'S LOOKING AND

WHEN HIS BACK IS TURNED STAY ON THE PHONE WITH PERSONAL PHONE

CALLS AND DOING ALL YOUR OWN PERSONAL EMAILS.

[AUDIENCE LAUGHING]

JOYCE: "WELL, BLESS GOD, THEY DON'T PAY ME ENOUGH ANYWAY."

THAT'S GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

WE DON'T GET TO DO WHAT'S WRONG BECAUSE SOMEBODY ELSE ISN'T

DOING WHAT'S RIGHT.

SO, REALLY, IN ALL THESE THINGS, WIVES, OBEY YOUR HUSBANDS.

HUSBANDS, TREAT YOUR WIVES RIGHT.

CHILDREN, OBEY YOUR PARENTS.

PARENTS, TREAT YOUR KIDS RIGHT.

EMPLOYEES, BE GOOD WORKERS.

IT ALL HAS TO BE A COMBINATION.

IT'S TALKING ABOUT--YOU CAN'T JUST PULL OUT, "WIVES, SUBMIT

YOURSELVES TO YOUR HUSBANDS."

YOU KNOW, PART OF THE PROBLEM THAT WE HAVE TODAY IN OUR

SOCIETY IS THINGS ARE SO UPSIDE DOWN COMPARED TO THE WAY

THAT THEY SHOULD BE.

YOU KNOW, I BELIEVE IN WOMEN'S RIGHTS AND THE LIBERALITY OF

WOMEN.

AND EVE WAS TAKEN OUT OF ADAM'S SIDE, NOT OUT OF THE BOTTOM OF

HIS FEET SO HE WASN'T INTENDED TO WALK ALL OVER HER.

SHE WAS TO WALK BESIDE HIM AND THEY WILL BE PARTNERS

TOGETHER.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: I BELIEVE IN THAT, BUT TO BE HONEST, SOME WOMEN

HAVE TAKEN IT SO FAR TO SUCH AN EXTREME THAT IT'S NO

LONGER BIBLICAL.

AND THEN MEN, BLESS THEIR DARLING HEARTS, NOT IN ALL CASES

BUT IN SO MANY CASES, MEN WANNA BE THE BOSS BUT THEY'RE NOT

THE HEAD OF THEIR HOME.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: THEY'RE NOT TAKING THE RESPONSIBILITY THEY SHOULD TAKE.

A LOT OF MEN DON'T WORK TODAY BUT EVEN IF THEY DO WORK, THEN

THEY THINK THAT GIVES THEM A RIGHT TO COME HOME AND PARK

IN A RECLINER FOR THE REST OF THE DAY ALL LEANED BACK DOING

WHAT THEY FEEL LIKE DOING.

WELL, THE WOMEN TAKE CARE OF THE KIDS, THE WOMEN PAY THE BILLS,

THE WOMEN TAKE CARE OF THE REPAIRS, AND THAT'S NOT

THE WAY THAT IT'S MEANT TO BE.

THIS HAS TO BE A COMBINATION.

SO, THE OBVIOUS QUESTION BECOMES--SINCE I'M NOT GONNA

SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON THIS, LET'S GET TO THE OBVIOUS

QUESTION.

OKAY, IF I HAVE A HUSBAND WHO'S NOT TREATING ME RIGHT, THEN AM

I STILL SUPPOSED TO SUBMIT TO THEM?

ALL RIGHT, WELL FIRST OF ALL, I DON'T THINK THERE CAN BE

ONE BLANKET ANSWER.

I CAN'T SAY YES OR I CAN'T SAY NO BECAUSE EVERY SITUATION HAS

TO BE LOOKED AT FOR WHAT IT IS.

MY MOTHER WAS WHAT WOULD APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN A VERY SUBMISSIVE

WIFE WHILE MY FATHER RAN AROUND WITH OTHER WOMEN, CAME HOME

DRUNK VERY OFTEN AND WOULD SLAP, AND HIT, AND SOMETIMES EVEN

BEAT HER.

HE WAS SEXUALLY ABUSING ME AND SHE KNEW THAT AND DID

NOTHING ABOUT IT.

AND I WANNA TELL YOU, THAT IS NOT A SUBMISSIVE WIFE.

THAT IS PASSIVITY, AND LAZINESS, AND STUPIDITY.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: GOD HAS NOT CALLED YOU, AS A WOMAN, TO BE PUSHED

AROUND AND TREATED AS IF YOUR OPINION DOES NOT MAKE ANY

DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD.

NOW, THAT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT THING THAN LET'S JUST SAY THAT

MAYBE I HAVE A HUSBAND THAT DOESN'T TREAT ME RIGHT

AND THERE'S SOME THINGS I'M GONNA HAVE TO STAND UP AGAINST.

I DON'T THINK THAT YOU SHOULD LET A MAN TELL YOU THAT YOU

CAN'T GO TO CHURCH, THAT YOU CAN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO

WITH GOD.

YOU KNOW, THERE'S CERTAIN--YOU CAN'T--YOU CAN'T SUBMIT TO

SOMEBODY WHO'S TRYING TO BRING YOU INTO SIN.

REMEMBER IT SAYS TO SUBMIT AS IT IS FITTING IN THE LORD.

SO, THERE'S SOME THINGS THAT ARE JUST NOT--GOD'S GOTTA COME

FIRST, AMEN?

GOD HAS GOT TO COME FIRST IN OUR LIVES.

AND SO, THERE'S SOME THINGS YOU'RE GONNA STAND UP AGAINST

AND SAY, "HEY, I LOVE YOU, I'M SORRY, BUT I'M JUST NOT

GONNA DO THAT.

THAT'S NOT WHAT GOD WOULD HAVE ME DO AND I'M NOT GONNA DO IT."

BUT THEN ON THE OTHER HAND, THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT YOU SHOULD

RESIST EVERYTHING AND START A WAR OVER THINGS THAT YOU COULD

JUST LET GO AND IT DOESN'T MAKE THAT MUCH DIFFERENCE.

AND JUST TO BE CLEAR, AND IT MIGHT BE SURPRISING TO SOME OF

YOU, I ACTUALLY AM A SUBMISSIVE WIFE.

NOW OBVIOUSLY, I'M FEISTY, AND I'VE GOT MY OPINION, AND I'M

A STRONG WOMAN, AND I'M DOING THINGS.

AND, YOU KNOW, DAVE DOESN'T TRY TO RUN MY LIFE AND TELL ME WHAT

TO DO ALL THE TIME BUT THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS LIKE THERE WAS

SOMETHING THAT I WAS GETTING READY TO DO AND HE SAID LAST

WEEK, "I JUST REALLY DON'T HAVE PEACE ABOUT THAT,"

AND I DROPPED IT.

I LET IT GO.

SO, YOU HAVE TO LEARN THE DIFFERENCE IN STANDING UP

AGAINST SOMETHING THAT IS REALLY JUST NOT THE WILL OF GOD FOR YOU

AND THEN JUST BEING BELLIGERENT ABOUT EVERYTHING BECAUSE,

"BLESS GOD, NOBODY'S GONNA TELL ME WHAT TO DO."

SO HERE AGAIN, THIS WHOLE THING, VERSES 18 THROUGH 22, I THINK

A LOT OF IT IS TALKING ABOUT THE ATMOSPHERE THAT GOD WANTS US

TO LIVE IN.

HE WANTS US TO LIVE IN PEACE.

HE STARTS IN 3:15, "LET PEACE BE YOUR UMPIRE."

SIXTEEN, "KEEP THINGS INSIDE OF YOU PEACEFUL.

MAKE MELODY IN YOUR HEART UNTO THE LORD.

DO WHAT YOU DO IN JESUS' NAME.

DON'T BE DOING THINGS THAT WAR AGAINST YOUR SOUL."

NOW, IN YOUR FAMILIES, "WIVES, BE SUBMISSIVE TO YOUR HUSBANDS.

HUSBANDS, LOVE YOUR WIVES.

CHILDREN, SUBMIT TO YOUR PARENTS.

PARENTS, DON'T MISTREAT YOUR CHILDREN.

DON'T TAKE YOUR ANGRY, UNDUE CHASTISEMENTS OUT ON THEM.

WHEN YOU GO OUT IN THE WORLD AND YOU GO TO WORK,

BE A GOOD EMPLOYEE.

BE SUBMISSIVE TO THE PERSON THAT'S PAYING YOUR SALARY,"

AND ON AND ON AND ON.

SO, IT'S A PACKAGE AND WE DARE NOT JUST PULL OUT VERSE 18 AND

MAKE A HUGE ORDEAL OUT OF HOW WOMEN NEED TO SUBMIT TO THEIR

HUSBANDS.

AND I'LL BE HONEST WITH YOU, I THINK SOMETIMES THAT ONE'S BEEN

OVERDONE AND THE REST OF THEM WE HAVEN'T PAID ENOUGH

ATTENTION TO.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: SO, I'M GOING TO MOVE RIGHT ON PAST THAT NOW AND GO ON

TO SOMETHING ELSE.

NOW, HERE'S THING, IF WE'RE ALL SUBMISSIVE TO ONE ANOTHER--SEE,

IF WE GO BACK AND LOOK AT COLOSSIANS 3:16, IT TALKS ABOUT,

"LET THE WORD [SPOKEN BY] CHRIST (THE MESSIAH) HAVE ITS HOME [IN

YOUR HEARTS AND MINDS] AND DWELL IN YOU IN [ALL ITS] RICHNESS,"

NOW WATCH THIS, "AS YOU TEACH AND ADMONISH AND TRAIN

ONE ANOTHER IN ALL INSIGHT."

DO YOU KNOW A HEALTHY BODY OF BELIEVERS THAT ARE ALL IN

COMMUNITY AND TRYING TO LIVE TOGETHER, IT'S NOT JUST

ONE PERSON WHO DOES ALL THE TEACHING?

THEY SAID YOU SHOULD TEACH AND TRAIN ONE ANOTHER

AND ADMONISH ONE ANOTHER.

YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS?

IF YOU SEE A BROTHER OR SISTER THAT'S GOING IN A WRONG

DIRECTION, LOVE 'EM ENOUGH TO TELL 'EM THAT "YOU REALLY

SHOULDN'T BE BEHAVING LIKE THAT.

YOU KNOW, YOU REALLY SHOULDN'T BE GOSSIPING ABOUT THAT PERSON.

YOU REALLY NEED TO LET GO OF THAT BITTERNESS THAT'S

IN YOUR LIFE."

DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO EVEN BREATHE A WORD OF

CORRECTION TO ANYBODY THESE DAYS?

"BLESS GOD, NOBODY'S GONNA TELL ME WHAT TO DO.

NOBODY'S GONNA TELL ME WHAT TO DO."

AND SO, IT'S ALL ABOUT AN ATTITUDE THAT WE--THAT WE

LIVE WITH.

HE SAYS, "DO THIS AS A SERVICE TO THE LORD."

OKAY SO, LET ME JUST TELL YA SOMETHING, THERE'S A LOT OF

THINGS THAT I COULD DO BECAUSE I LOVE GOD THAT I WOULDN'T REALLY

WANT TO DO FOR ANY OTHER REASON, AMEN, INCLUDING KEEP MY MOUTH

SHUT SOMETIMES AT HOME.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU, BUT I MUCH PREFER TO HAVE THE LAST

WORD AND ALWAYS BE RIGHT.

[AUDIENCE LAUGHING]

JOYCE: NOBODY ELSE IS LIKE THAT?

HOW ABOUT YOU, MICHELLE, YOU WANT TO HAVE THE LAST WORD,

BE RIGHT?

AMEN, BUT FOR THE SAKE OF THE LORD, BECAUSE I LOVE HIM AND

IT'S WHAT HE'S ASKED ME TO DO, I--SOMETIMES I EVEN LET DAVE

THINK HE'S RIGHT WHEN I KNOW HE'S WRONG.

[AUDIENCE APPLAUDING]

JOYCE: I JUST DON'T EVEN TELL HIM ANYMORE BUT I KNOW

HE'S WRONG.

[AUDIENCE LAUGHING]

JOYCE: HA, HA, HA.

[AUDIENCE LAUGHING]

JOYCE: ALL RIGHT, COLOSSIANS 3:23,

"WHATEVER MIGHT BE YOUR TASK, WORK AT IT HEARTILY (FROM

THE SOUL), AS [SOMETHING DONE]

FOR THE LORD AND NOT FOR MEN."

DIFFICULT CHOICES ARE MADE EASIER WHEN WE DO THINGS

FOR GOD.

COLOSSIANS 3:24 AND 25, "KNOWING [WITH ALL CERTAINTY]--"

BOY, I LOVE THIS SCRIPTURE.

"KNOWING [WITH ALL CERTAINTY]

THAT IT IS FROM THE LORD [AND NOT FROM MEN] THAT YOU

WILL RECEIVE THE INHERITANCE WHICH IS OUR [REAL] REWARD."

NOW, YOU KNOW WHAT?

PAYDAY'S COMING.

REWARDS FOR RIGHT BEHAVIOR ARE ON THEIR WAY BUT, UH-OH, REWARDS

FOR WRONG BEHAVIOR ARE ALSO ON THEIR WAY.

WE DO REAP WHAT WE SOW.

REWARDS, LET'S TALK ABOUT REWARDS FOR A MINUTE.

IF YOU'RE WILLING TO DO THE THING FOR THE SAKE OF THE LORD

THAT'S HARD FOR YOU TO DO IN THE NATURAL, GOD WILL REWARD YOU

OPENLY, THE BIBLE SAYS, AMEN?

GOD WILL REWARD YOU OPENLY.

I LOVE REWARDS.

HEBREWS 11:6, "GOD IS THE REWARDER OF THOSE WHO

DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM."

HOW MANY OF YOU LIKE PAYDAY?

IT'S EASIER TO DO THE WORK THE CLOSER PAYDAY GETS, RIGHT?

MATTHEW 6, "WHEN YOU GIVE IN SECRET, GOD WILL REWARD YOU

IN THE OPEN.

WHEN YOU PRAY IN SECRET, GOD WILL REWARD YOU IN THE OPEN."

LET'S JUST MAKE A DECISION, AND I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT

THIS A LOT THIS YEAR.

I'VE EVEN TALKED TO A COUPLE PEOPLE ABOUT IT.

YOU KNOW, WE CAN JUST GET OURSELVES SO UPSET WHEN WE'RE

DOING THINGS FOR THE WRONG REASON.

IF YOU'RE DOING THINGS BECAUSE YOU EXPECT PEOPLE TO APPRECIATE

YOU, YOU MAY GET DISAPPOINTED A LOT.

BUT IF YOU DO WHAT YOU DO UNTO THE LORD, COME ON, DO WHAT YOU

DO UNTO THE LORD, YOUR REWARD WILL COME FROM HIM.

EVEN WITHIN THE CHURCH, HOW MANY PEOPLE SOMETIMES WILL WORK

REAL HARD IN THE CHURCH AND THEY VOLUNTEER A LOT OF TIME AND,

YOU KNOW, MAYBE YOU WORK EVERY SUNDAY IN THE NURSERY AND NOBODY

EVER REALLY SAYS, "HEY THANKS, WE APPRECIATE YOU."

AND SO, YOU BEGIN TO MEDITATE ON THAT, HOW THEY DON'T APPRECIATE

YOU AND YOU'RE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF BUT NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN,

YOU'RE GETTING IN A BAD MOOD AND LOSING YOUR JOY.

WELL, YOU NEED TO REWIND AND SAY, "WAIT A MINUTE,

WHY AM I DOING THIS?

AM I DOING IT TO BE APPRECIATED OR AM I DOING IT AS A SERVICE

TO THE LORD?" AND WHAT I DO UNTO HIM, IF, IF,

IF, EVERYBODY SAY, "IF."

IF I DO IT WITH A GOOD ATTITUDE, THEN MY REWARD WILL COME

FROM HIM.

MY REWARD WILL COME FROM HIM.

JOYCE: WELL, TODAY IS A GOOD DAY TO MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT.

WHATEVER YOU FIND YOURSELF DOING, SAY, "I'M GOING TO DO

THAT FOR THE LORD AND NOT FOR PEOPLE,"

AND WHEN YOU DO THAT, YOUR REWARD WILL COME FROM GOD

AT THE RIGHT TIME.

IT WILL MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN YOU ENJOYING EVERY DAY OF

YOUR LIFE.

Accounting for Beginners #90 / BALANCE SHEET in Five Minutes / ACCOUNTING 101 TUTORIAL / FAST & EASY - Duration: 5:01.

yo CPA strength here back with another video this is accounting for beginners

number 90 balance sheet in five minutes I have a whole other series you can look

on this playlist over here for anyway so let's get into this balance sheet in

five minutes we're gonna start off with our dc-8 large you don't know about GCL

or if you have instead of videos watch some other ones have our base for

everything and now out of that we have our balance sheet which is assets equal

liabilities plus equity All Right see here's the dc-8 ler asset see the

balance sheets in there so this is the balance sheet and then this is the line

are these always this is always equals here and the balance sheets in there if

you can't remember what the balance sheet is just the balance sheet is

assets equal liabilities plus equity now let's just think about that it balances

write the name of it as balances so if you can remember what each side of it is

write one side is asset see the asset is one side and the other side is

liabilities plus equity that means you know both sides okay you know you know

the two sides okay one is assets the others liabilities and equity and they

balance so this is my kind of balance beam or whatever these are you know

these have to equal and they balance the same values you know if you have five

thousand over here this has to be five thousand over here I got a question and

said hey assets is like money and stuff you have and then liabilities and stuff

you owe to somebody so I don't understand how they equal so I think

they're forgetting that equity was equities part of its liabilities plus

equity we're gonna do cash twenty thousand dollars and we're gonna do a

vehicle twenty thousand dollars so that means our assets are forty thousand

dollars so that's what we have in the company we have cash $20,000 and

a vehicle $20,000 or $40,000 their assets so that means what has to balance

on the other side of this what has to be either a liability or equity is $40,000

what is a liability is what you owe somebody liability is Oh somebody equity

is what we have in it what we own what we have in it what we own okay

so us so what is this comprise of liabilities own it to somebody the

equity is we own it so do we own it or owe it side of this

$40,000 out of this $40,000 right you can say how much liability do we have

we're gonna say 10,000 liability and how much equity we're gonna say 30,000 in

this first example so in this example we have $20,000 cash $20,000 vehicles of

$40,000 assets so we have to equal that with our liabilities and equity now in

this example we have $10,000 $10,000 liability and $30,000 equity you know I

have what liability is comprised of in other videos and I have what equities

comprise their other videos as well but basically liabilities is what the

company owes somebody and equity is what the company owns so in this one in a

brief second you can see the company has $40,000 worth of assets they owe

somebody 10,000 to that and they the company controls 30,000 of that so it's

kind of looking you know like a decently strong company all right let's reverse

let's reverse facts they still have $40,000 in assets but we're gonna just

switch this ten in third we're gonna switch the liabilities and equity

we're gonna go $30,000 liability and 10,000

equity that means that the $40,000 the asset they have with $20,000 cash and a

$20,000 vehicle over here on the asset side that means what is it comprised of

year we know this is in the business but do they own does the business owner do

they owe all that to somebody else when you look in three corners over $30,000

$40,000 they owe to somebody else so they don't even have that in theirs so

anyways that's five-minute balance sheet remember they always have to balance

assets equal liabilities plus equity and we get that off DC abler this is CP a

strength they love doing this and let's see I'll see you tomorrow

THERE'S NO TRANSLATION FOR "SAUDADE" (AND OTHER MYTHS) - Duration: 6:00.

There are several myths that for some reason or another

many Brazilians take as truth.

But for gringos, they're quite strange. Today, I'll debunk them.

MYTH 1: Portuguese is a very difficult language

First, Portuguese is a very difficult language to learn!

I've even heard Brazilians say it's the most complicated language in the world!

Look, Portuguese is a lot of things. It's beautiful. Hearing people speak Portuguese when I arrive in Brazil

always makes me happy.

The sound of the language, the rhythm of the words, the way Brazilians speak, the accent...

especially the Minas Gerais accent...

[MAN SPEAKS WITH THICK ACCENT]

served with [these two delicious dishes].

But Portuguese is not complicated, especially if you already speak a European language.

Let's see why. First, it's written with the Roman alphabet, A, B, C, D, E.

I didn't need to learn any other alphabet to understand.

which would have been necessary to learn Arabic or Russian or Korean.

And don't even talk to be about Chinese, which uses ideograms instead of letters.

Second, it's pronounced the way it's written,

If you show me a word in Portuguese, and I can tell you how it's pronounced.

with the exception of some vowels and, of course, my accent.

"Today" [mispronounced] we start our special series

English is not like that.

Third, the pronunciation is complicated, but only compared with other European languages.

It's not tonal, like a lot of Asian languages, you have to sing to speak,

because the same sound in a different tone means different things.

"ma, ma, ma, ma" - I just said 4 words with very different meanings.

Whoa. Fourth, verbs are complicated in Portuguese! But no more complicated than verbs in Spanish or French.

Fifth, you think conjugating verbs is complicated? What about languages that "conjugate" nouns?

Well, it's not called conjugation, it's called declination,

but in languages like Russian and many others, the noun changes depending on its positioning in the sentence.

And you don't even want to know about the grammar of many indigenous languages around the world,

that are so complicated I don't know how to explain them.

MYTH 2: Buenos Aires, capital of Brazil?

The second myth is that: Americans think that the capital of Brazil is Buenos Aires!

That's a Brazilian invention.

When I was a reporter in Brazil, I came back to the United States to survey 50 American tourists

waiting for the boat to the Statue of Liberty in New York. Of the 50, eight got it right, Brasília.

Eight others said Rio, which was the capital, that makes sense.

Thirteen said São Paulo, but the most frequent response was simply, "I don't know."

Sixteen people. Of the fifty people, not a single one said Buenos Aires.

That rumor, I think, comes from various mentions in Brazilian popular culture.

There's a song by Tom Zé,

🎵 Our capital was Buenos Aires... 🎵

A viral video in which George Bush wants to invade Brazil and bombs Buenos Aires...

The Brazilians think they have defeated me. But I have the final word...

Type the name of the capital of the country you want to destroy.

MYTH 3: "Saudade" has no translation

"Saudade," a word with no translation.

That's a lie. Of course it does. Just open the dictionary.

Saudade: longing, yearning. Or in the context of "Estou com saudades," I miss you.

Now, you might respond that "I miss you" is not exactly the same.

But no translation is exact. Many words are like this.

For example, how do you say "smart" in Portuguese?

"Inteligente"? But it's not exactly that, because "intelligent" is also "inteligente"

and smart and intelligent are not the same thing.

The truth is you don't have an exact equivalent for "smart".

But I can't say it "doesn't have a translation."

Ah, by the way, I explained the difference between "smart" and "intelligent" on Instagram "seuamigogringo"

last week - follow me!

But don't worry! Portuguese still has many words that don't have an equivalent in English.

The prettiest is "cafuné," a marvelous word of African origin.

You can explain it in English, but not with

one single word. Wow, that's free of charm.

OK, two more, "comanda" [a paper that serves as your running tab in bars], a system we don't have

and so we have no translation.

And of course, finally, "cartório" [privatized government certification offices, like notary publics times 1000]

which also doesn't exist here, thank God.

ISIS Đưa Trung Quốc Vào Tầm Ngắm | Trung Quốc Không Kiểm Duyệt - Duration: 9:35.

On this episode of China Uncensored

ISIS is now going after China

And now the Chinese Communist Party versus ISIS

No, not that ISIS,

though now I have a cool idea for season 9.

I'm talking about the real ISIS.

The one so evil that it forced the writers of Archer to quietly drop the name from the show.

This ISIS,

also known as ISIL,

one of the world's most brutal terrorist organizations,

ISIS has killed tens of thousands of innocent people.

Well, ISIS is now targeting the Chinese Communist Party

which is also one of the world's most brutal organizations

and has killed tens of millions of innocent people.

So who do you root for?

It's like Alien versus Predator,

whoever wins, humanity loses.

Back in March, ISIS released a video threatening the CCP.

ISIS said it would come to China

to clarify to you with the tongues of our weapons

to shed blood like rivers

and avenging the oppressed.

The oppressed?

In China?

Sorry you'll have to be more specific about

which group of oppressed people in China you're talking about.

But you get the gist.

It's a threat.

But you know there's something I don't get.

It's not like China is sending its troops into the Middle East to fight ISIS.

Actually, the United States has been complaining

that China isn't doing its part in the fight against global terrorisma .

And in some ways, the Chinese regime is doing the opposite.

Like, when they defended their close ally Pakistan,

saying Pakistan is totally not a harbor for terrorists.

And that came just months after ISIS killed two Chinese nationals in Pakistan.

And the Chinese regime just to prove it really really didn't care,

blame the Chinese victims.

ISIS killed those Chinese citizens because they were illegally preaching Christianity in Pakistan.

Although to be fair,

that could have been their fate for illegally preaching Christianity in China, too.

The Chinese regime has basically stated,

'It won't join the global fight against ISIS.'

This is not to say the CCP is buddy-buddies with ISIS.

It's mainly that their strategy for dealing with the complexities of terror in the Middle-East

is basically: 'Nah, you guys sort it out.'

I mean, I told you in the last segment

that other BRICS countries got China to sign a joint statement

to express concern about ISIS.

And that's considered a big win

but still doesn't require China to do anything.

As Business Insider puts it,

while relying on the region for oil supplies,

China has tended to leave Middle Eastern diplomacy

to the other permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Take Iraq for example,

the US initially led the war effort to liberate Iraq...

from its oil reserves.

But now it's China buying up most of Iraq's oil,

the Chinese regime also recently announced

an almost half a billion dollar construction deal in Iraq

to rebuild after the defeat of ISIS.

I mean, not that the Chinese regime is specifically planning for the defeat of ISIS.

it's more that the Chinese regime wants to include Iraq in it's One Belt One Road Initiative.

And by and large,

this has been the Chinese regime's international strategy in the Middle East since the Cold War.

"An 'offend no one' and 'attached no string' strategy"

Offend no one and attach no strings,

sounds more like my friend Chad's dating strategy.

And much like Chad's love life,

the Middle East is still a hot mess.

So how did ISIS get so offended by the Chinese Communist Party?

I mean, they seem so reasonable

Well, it's because the Chinese regime is fighting a war against terrorists.

And by terrorists,

they mean the Uyghur people in western China in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

In China, an autonomous region is like a province,

autonomous means self governed

in the same way that People's Republic of China means it's run by the people.

Because in the case of Xinjiang,

the CCP has been ridiculously heavy-handed.

And how things are run?

About ten million of Xinjiang's 22 million residents

are the Turkic-speaking Uyghur people.

Who are these Uyghur people?

In a lot of ways, they're just like you and me.

They enjoy riding horses through golden hills on a warm September day,

eating spicy noodles at the local street market,

sitting through boring college PowerPoint presentation,

and loading up on carbs when they know they really really shouldn't

but it's my [cheat] day so don't judge me.

Of course, there's one thing that distinguishes the Uyghur people for most other Chinese.

A lot of them are Muslim, mostly secular Muslim,

although of course there's lots of religious Muslims there too.

The Chinese regime has effectively labeled all Uyghurs as a threat.

But it's not like they've singled them out for their religion or anything.

Remember over the years,

the Chinese regime has persecuted all sorts of groups,

Tibetans,

intellectuals

wealthy people,

poor people,

Christians,

lawyers,

activists,

and even those people who just sit there quietly in yellow shirts.

It's equal opportunity oppression.

I'm sorry Uyghurs, you're just not that special.

But according to this policy paper,

over the years,

the Chinese government gradually turned Uygur national identity and Islamic practices

into national security threats.

You see, after 9/11,

the Chinese regime realized they had a golden opportunity

to finally get international support

for one of their crazy persecutions.

Because these victims were Muslim.

So any locals who were angry at the CCP for, really, any number of reasons

were suddenly labeled as terrorists.

And you don't want to stand up for terrorists, do you?

And the CCP thinks

that nothing is as effective at stopping terrorism

like going after people's traditions.

So the CCP banned burkas and abnormal beards.

Plus, they ban traditional Muslim clothing

the [nomad] helmet

and fasting during the holy month of Ramadan for students and civil servants.

The CCP has also put extreme surveillance measures in place in the entire Xinjian region.

Like requiring a GPS in every car

and forcing residents to install spyware on their mobile phones

that tracks everywhere they go

every website they visit

and every text message they send.

Yeah, that's not gonna make anyone mad.

Of course to keep them in line,

the CCP has added a heavy military presence in Xinjiang.

Incidentally, the Communist Party chief in charge of Xinjiang

is this guy.

Previously, he was in charge of Tibet for five years.

He did excellent work in Tibet,

making sure no one there had freedom either.

So after years of the CCP treating its Muslim population horribly,

guess what?

It actually ended up driving some of them to terrorism.

Over the years,

there have been several acts of terror

carried out by Islamic extremists in Xinjiang.

Like the 2014 car bomb attack that killed 31 people.

Actually, Chinese state-run media has labeled about 15 incidents in Xinjiang to be acts of terror

in the past two decades.

Although it's hard to know how much of that is really terrorism

and how much is just regular crime

spun by state-run media as terrorism

to justify the heavy-handed treatment of locals.

None of the incidents were claimed by ISIS.

But, after ISIS became an evil global sensation in 2014,

ISIS tried to take advantage of Uyghur people's widespread anger with the CCP.

This study from a US think-tank

found that a hundred and fourteen ISIS fighters came from Xinjiang.

And now, you have ISIS actively recruiting in Xinjiang.

Even rolling out slickly produced songs in Mandarin to do it.

And ISIS is threatening the CCP.

But as I mentioned, the CCP kind of created their own problem.

For instance,

if the Chinese regime hadn't actively destroyed Tibet,

killing monks, burning temples, trying to wipe out their culture

and instead treated everyone reasonably well,

there'd be no anti China movement in the Tibetan community.

And the world might never have seen the Beastie Boys and Smashing Pumpkins

together on the same stage, at the same time.

And in Xinjiang,

the CCP oppression has also bred resentment.

Most of the Uyghurs there are very moderate in terms of their religion

and just want to be left alone by the CCP.

Don't we all?

But once the CCP started destroying their culture,

monitoring their every move

and labeling them as terrorists,

it's no wonder some of them have turned violent.

And it's no wonder ISIS is now trying to use that anger

for its own terrible agenda.

Although actually,

in a region with 10 million Uyghurs,

ISIS has only been able to recruit 114 fighters,

which is really really few.

And the number of Islamic terrorist attacks in Xinjiang

has also been pretty small compared to the size of the population at least.

But it's a great excuse for the world's biggest totalitarian regime

to blame the world's scariest terrorist group

and oppress millions of innocent Uyghurs just in case.
