Shrimad Rajchandra Vachanamrut Patrank - 875
At the Lotus Feet of the Supremely compassionate Great Sage,
Salutation with supreme devotion and reverence.
Wondrous are the nectar-like teachings,
Countenance and association of the Enlightened One!
They awaken the dormant consciousness,
Prevent the inclination from falling,
Simply beholding which makes one flawless and kindles the unprecedented nature,
They are the cause for right faith of the Self, restraint devoid of indolence (negligence),
And state of absolute dispassion and thoughtlessness;
Lastly, manifesting the state devoid of activities of mind, speech and body,
And causing abidance in the infinite, unobstructed nature of the Self!
Be victorious forever!
Om Peace Peace Peace
Today is Kartik Purnima,
The human form bearing the name Shrimad Rajchandra, was born 150 years ago.
That is, His life as Shrimad Rajchandra,
Began auspiciously, 150 years prior to today.
What is life?
Dates?
Situations?
Incidents?
The places associated with those incidents?
Time?
A combination of all this, is that all that life is?
Just as an elephant has two types of teeth;
One which can be seen,
And the other that cannot be seen, but help in chewing.
In the same way, there are two facets to the Enlightened One's life.
One is the external life and the other the internal life.
The external life comprises situations, incidents,
That can be seen and written in books;
And one is the Enlightened One's internal life,
The inner state that cannot be seen with the eyes.
From that perspective, it is invisible.
But the eyes of an aspirant 'see' it - that life.
External life means:
When was He born? Vikram Samvat 1924, 1867.
Where was He born? In the village of Vavania.
At whose residence was He born?
At Ravjibhai and Devaba's residence.
And so on…
When was He married? When did He become a renunciate?
How long did He live?
All this is the account of His external life.
And His internal life is that which is related to His Enlightenment.
The inner inclination, inner state,
Which is distinct from the body, which transcends circumstances.
And Enlightenment is related only to this distinctness.
Due to this, they are venerable and worshipped by us.
For the ignorant, circumstances are important.
Therefore, when and what was given up - this is what holds importance.
When did He leave the home?
When did He embrace renunciation?
When did He adopt the life of an ascetic?
These are the things he associates with.
Or, he is interested in what has been gained.
He is more interested in the Lord's samavasaran, (Grand Assembly Hall)
The ignorant one is less interested in His Omniscience and Dispassion.
But this is not why the Enlightened One is revered.
Because, this is the narrative of the body, And of the manifestation of karma.
House, wife, Ashram, number of disciples-
The Enlightened One is not associated with all these.
An aspirant places importance on the inner state.
The inner inclination holds importance.
Param Krupalu Dev has said:
'Whether I have a body or not is something I barely remember on recollection.'
An aspirant is interested only in that which gives the message of inner transformation.
True recognition brings true devotion.
Else, dates and incidents have no value from a spiritual perspective.
This morning, when I went up for the abhishek, (venerating the idol with water)
When he saw the abhishek taking place so beautifully, someone asked,
"Param Krupalu Dev would be very happy today, right?"
I replied, "This thought has not occurred to me and I don't have the courage to ask this."
If I were to ask "Oh Lord! You must be very happy today, right?"
He would say "Why? What has happened today?"
I would say, "The birth of the body; 150 years."
He would ask, "Whose body? What body?"
"If you are happy to celebrate that which I have never considered mine,"
"Then you will feel the pangs of separation on Chaitra Vad Pancham when I left it."
"And my message is simply this, Go beyond joy and sorrow."
Though I was rehearsing internally, if He says this then what would I say,
First I would say, "You are completely right."
"However, Oh Lord, in addition to being seekers, we are devotees too."
"And our devotion increases through such events, so we organise them."
"In Your eyes, these are all childish activities."
"And I accept that."
"Walking on Your path, when we become mature,"
"Then maybe all these things will not seem so important."
One who recognises the Master's virtues and venerates Him,
He will attain the purity of Right Perception.
The inner state needs to be understood,
Only then will it be said that, the Enlightened One's divine countenance,
Nectar-like teachings and association have been imbibed.
To understand this two things will need to be understood:
One is history, and the second is, Truth.
Truth is what should be there,
Anything other than this is not possible.
If you believe He is an Enlightened Being, then this is how it will be,
Anything other than this is impossible.
And history will explain what happened,
And in that, something different is possible.
This will need to be understood.
There was a historian named Burke.
He was working since 15 years to write the history of the past 1000 years.
He was working since 15 years collecting information, doing research and compiling it.
One afternoon, while working in his room,
He heard a noise outside and went to see what happened.
On asking the cause of the noise one man replied that,
Two people were fighting and in the fight one was killed.
The fight escalated so much that one person died.
It had been only 10 - 15 minutes since the incident occurred,
There were many eye-witnesses present.
When he asked someone how it happened, the person replied,
Two people were fighting and one of them fell to the ground.
Another said that two people were fighting and one killed the other by mistake.
A third person said that two people were fighting,
And one killed the other in self-defence.
The fourth said that two people were fighting,
And one intentionally murdered the other.
Burke realised that though he was collecting this information from eye-witnesses;
And the incident had taken place 15 minutes ago,
Still he was getting different versions of it.
And he was trying to write the history of a 1000 years ago!
Thus, history will always be debatable.
Hence, those writing history and those writing the Puranas,
Both have different cameras.
One merely records external events.
He collects, compiles and chronicles information regarding external occurrences.
And the other, writing the Puranas,
Notes the internal state during these external occurrences,
That is, he documents the Truth.
One records the circumstances, and one records the Truth.
Thus, history can reveal very little about enlightenment.
Thus, it is only through an Enlightened Being that another is recognised.
Because, after the description of circumstances,
Explaining that which is beyond circumstances,
Leads to the recognition of the Enlightened One.
A historian only focuses on facts.
So when the history of Jesus was written,
The historian was unable to accept, that after being crucified,
Three days later, Jesus was resurrected.
Historians are not able to accept this.
Those writing the Puranas can accept this, as it has a message.
Historians cannot accept that Jesus was born from a virgin mother,
Virgin Mary.
They ask how it is possible for a child to be born without association with a man?
And if that took place, then all it means is that the woman was immoral.
The ones writing the Puranas say, this exactly how it would be!
The birth of the Great Ones isn't related to the body of an unmarried woman;
It means that Mary's consciousness was so untainted and innocent,
That is what they wish to convey.
The birth of such Great Ones cannot arise from passions.
We travelled to Israel in the year 2012,
Someone in a church there said that Jesus is the son of God.
Close by there was a synagogue where someone said,
Jesus was the son of Joseph and Mary. He was the son of man, not son of God.
A historian can only accept, that He was the son of Joseph.
But the one writing the Puranas says, he had never identified Himself with the body.
He had identified Himself with the Soul and so He is the son of God.
When I was studying MA, in the early nineties,
Or rather late eighties.
I had studied Jainism.
In our class, one boy asked,
When Lord Mahavira was moving about in the jungles, during His spiritual pursuits,
A snake named Chandakaushik bit Him on the leg.
And milk started flowing.
How can this be possible?
Firstly, milk can be created only in the body of a woman.
How can it be formed in a man's body?
One student asked this question to the professor.
And even if we believe that milk flowed,
Then if His body was filled with milk and He was meditating in the sun,
Why didn't the milk turn into curd?
Who will explain?
The writers of the Puranas will explain,
This means that when the snake bit Him,
There was no grief or hatred in Mahavira's mind.
Thoughts like, 'I am miserable' or 'He is the cause of my misery,' did not arise.
Rather, He was filled with supreme love even for him,
What kind of love? Such love, that arises in a mother's heart,
Which leads to the formation of milk in her bosom; this is what happened.
Therefore, the records of the historian,
And the one writing the Puranas will be different.
As a historian will only pen the external circumstances,
Whereas the one writing the Puranas will note the inner state.
The problem is followers and critics, both are interested in the external circumstances.
The follower is interested in proving how great Mahavira was,
That milk flowed in His body, and not blood.
So he too will like this story very much.
And a critic will also will wonder how something so absurd is possible.
Followers and critics will be interested in,
Incidents related to the body and external circumstances.
But one who is an aspirant, who yearns for liberation will be interested in the inner state.
His camera moves from the body to the consciousness, towards the Soul.
Thus, he sees something different.
He does not see the outer container, he sees the flame.
And seeing the flame, 'His inner state alone is the reason of my liberation.'
With this understanding, he focuses his mind on that.
Recognising the inner state.
During the manifestation of certain karmas, during certain situations,
What was the internal state of the Great Ones,
This is what the aspirant focuses on.
Because an aspirant is like a scientist,
He wants to experiment.
He wants to experiment and attain.
And the tips and the message that he needs for experimenting,
Can be found only by understanding the Enlightened One's internal state.
Focusing on the inner state is beneficial.
Only the one, who regularly introspects his feelings,
Is interested in knowing the Enlightened One's internal state.
He is interested in seeing that inner state.
On one side are foolish beings, and on the other are true aspirants.
Foolish ones want to compare one saint with another,
One God with another.
They want to do a comparative study between two Enlightened Ones.
This much was similar, this much was different;
He was wearing white clothes, He was wearing orange clothes.
Thus, he wants to compare them in different ways
An aspirant also wants to compare.
He compares his inner state with the Enlightened One's inner state.
Oh Wondrous Lord! You are so vast! So great!
Why am I like this?
With the slightest increase in heat, why do I get so agitated?
Why do I become the doer or enjoyer in any incident?
You are continuously immersed in divinity. Why am I involved in worldly passions?
You constantly remember the Lord,
And I can't remember Him even for a moment. Why is that?
And how do I attain the same state as You?
He constantly contemplates and reflects upon this.
He meditates, experiments and attains it.
He compares his shallow feelings, on one hand.
With the elevated state of the Enlightened One on the other.
And makes a firm decision that if I establish such a Great One in my heart,
And allow Him to permeate it, then, I can undoubtedly blossom.
He doesn't get dejected. He becomes enthusiastic.
Why am I like this? Why am I so bad?
He doesn't entertain such thoughts and become passive.
But I too can blossom and become a flower like You.
Winners are what?
Winners are losers, who tried one more time.
Once more he tried and he won.
Not stopping merely at worship, recitation, singing His glory, performing abhishek etc.,
To gain inspiration and strength for spiritual practices,
It is necessary to take the support of the Enlightened One.
Let us take inspiration, experiment and ultimately attain the same state as Him.
It is necessary to take His support to follow Him, and become like Him.
There is only one motive in taking the support of an Enlightened Being:
To go within.
To accomplish the aim of turning within,
Scriptures command ceaseless devotion towards such an Enlightened One.
To achieve the aim of turning within,
Param Krupalu Dev Shrimad Rajchandraji is a highly benevolent instrumental cause.
He is a living, throbbing, invitation to turn within.
Today Maulikji said He is present, that is why I added:
A living, throbbing invitation to turn within.
Shrimad Rajchandra is not an event of the past.
I am not ready to believe it was 150 years ago; or is a historical event.
Whenever boundless love for Him arises within,
From that moment, Shrimad Rajchandra has taken birth within you.
He is already born as a bud;
Now, when you turn within and abide in the Soul,
When you will blossom as a flower,
At that time you will be considered as Shrimad Rajchandra.
Thus, Shrimad Rajchandra is not a person,
Shrimad Rajchandra is the name of a happening.
And that can take place time and again.
Taking the support of this Great Being, when this happening takes place within us
Shrimad Rajchandra is not the founder of some sect,
It is the attainment of a soul who has traversed the path of the Dispassionate One.
Or I can say, Shrimad Rajchandra is the path to self-realisation.
As disciples it is our duty,
To remain alert, that if we get stuck in sectarianism,
Then, it is a great irreverence, disrespect, lack of devotion towards this Great Being.
By taking the support of such a One who is abiding in the Soul,
If we become established in the Soul, and attain self-realisation,
This alone is our true devotion towards Him.
Finding such a Great Being is extremely rare.
I told someone, "God was very tired after creating the world."
"And He needed some rest."
"He wanted to go for a retreat!"
"But He shouldered the responsibility of the welfare of all the living beings in the world."
So He said, "How can I take a vacation?"
"How can I go to the Himalayas for a retreat?"
"When there is so much work!"
He created Shrimad Rajchandra.
Thereafter, Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh all took off on a vacation!
Since 150 years they are still on vacation!
Now this Great Being will uplift the world!
So much chanting was performed, austerities were undertaken,
So many pilgrimages embarked upon, and auspicious deeds performed,
And through these, the stock of merits increased,
It is then that we received the company of such an Enlightened One!
Once I was telling Nemiji,
'Who am I?' this needs to be discovered,
This was when he embraced renunciation.
But before that determine this,
'Who do I belong to?'
I found refuge in this Great Being,
He accepted me as His disciple,
In just knowing 'who do I belong to', the work will be accomplished!
If one finds such a Great Being,
And devotion for Him arises,
That devotee is not even concerned about liberation.
This morning Morari Bapu also said the same thing.
Those surrendered to such a Great One, move around with liberation in their pockets!
Let me talk about myself,
Liberation is in my pocket,
I am not encashing it because I still want to do a lot of bhakti.
Once I encash it, I will be unable to do bhakti.
Thousands show the path, but only a Sadguru makes us reach our destination.
The dream of self-realisation, as I said earlier as well,
He gives us this dream, and He fulfils this dream too.
After hearing the chirping of a cuckoo, who would care for any other chirping?
And after devotion arises for such a One, how can worldly passions hinder us?
If you sit next to a gambler, after ten-fifteen minutes,
You will also feel like taking a chance,
Having been in the company of such a Great One,
Then, there can remain no interest in activities that would increase worldliness.
Shrimad Rajchandra is such a window, through which you can see the infinite sky.
Earlier, you could not even see the destination.
Once you took refuge in this Great Being,
You could see the destination, but very far away.
And when pure devotion towards Him arises,
It is as if the stream of water is close at hand,
My destination is within reach,
It is straightforward, easy to attain,
And the feeling arises that by His grace it will certainly be attained.
This is an opportunity to realise all our dreams.
And all our dreams means only one - the direct experience of the Soul.
This is the opportunity to realise this dream.
Let us not miss it.
Let us not fall short in our effort.
Let life not pass by in negligence,
We must ensure that.
Or else, this rare human birth will not be considered rare,
Rather, just a mixture of five elements.
Supreme devotion towards such a Great Being,
Constantly remaining in the feeling of gratitude,
And obeying His commands with unison of mind, body and speech,
This alone is true devotion.
It was said this morning that the birth of such a Great One is not the outcome of karma,
He takes birth out of compassion.
I would like to say: He was born for me!
He took birth for me, for my upliftment.
And now we all have to become His posters.
After seeing us, no one will read books about Shrimad Rajchandra,
After seeing us, they will form an opinion of how Shrimad Rajchandra must have been.
So singing devotional songs, is very easy,
But your entire life should become a devotional hymn!
Your entire life should be such that it sings His praises.
We were at a place in America,
Where, someone said, "Rakeshbhai, You are matchless!"
And I made a face.
I asked the person next to me, "Why is he saying this?"
I am connected to the Lord,
He should say I have a Divine Match, why matchless?
Supreme devotion towards this Great Being,
And practising the fundamental religion of the Dispassionate Ones,
That alone should be the aim of our life.
In the end, only this,
Call it a blessing if you wish, call it my prayer to the Lord if you wish,
'May the refuge of Param Krupalu Dev bear fruit for all!'
'May it bear fruit for all!'
'May it bear fruit for all!'
Om.
