AI UX | Minimize Intrusion | Intel Software - Duration: 4:00.

This is AI UX, a miniseries focused

on 10 guidelines created to assist you

in the design and development of AI-based systems.

I'm Daria Loi, an Intel researcher.

And today I will talk about guideline number two,

adopting the minimize intrusion mantra

with a less is more data approach.

The more data you fit into a system,

the more the system will learn, improving its algorithm's

efficiency and accuracy.

Having said that, you must be thoughtful in your data

approach.

When designing and developing AI systems,

use minimalism as a compass.

This means to only collect the data that is necessary for you

to successfully achieve the requested transaction.

For instance, if I recorded you 24/7,

the likelihood for me to accurately understand your life

and use algorithms to predict your future behaviors

would be higher than if I only had

data from a handful of motion sensors in your home.

Yet 24/7 monitoring would be intrusive and exhausting.

You would probably be hesitant to let someone collect data

on you all the time, as your personal privacy

would be compromised.

Just because a massive data collection

could make your AI-based system more advanced,

it does not mean that it should be pursued fully.

There has to be a level of respect and anonymity

for your users to ensure that people will embrace and use

an intelligent system.

Research interviews I conducted made

it clear that the more someone becomes

familiar with an intelligent system, the more they trust

and feel comfortable in using it.

To establish familiarity, careful design

and considerations are needed.

One of the participants in my research

was originally skeptical of smart home systems,

explained that she considered the technology

only after her husband purchased the system.

Once the system reached their home,

she took some time to get familiar with it.

As she grew more familiar and her comfort with the system

increased, she started exploring advanced capabilities

and felt open to embrace more systems

to refine her smart home abilities,

even if that meant allowing her systems to collect more data.

She was able to do this after realizing

the value of the technology through daily use, validating

that it was a safe technology, and after realizing

that the system value-add justified additional data

collection.

Familiarity and trust are crucial if you want someone

to feel confident using your AI system.

This process takes time, patience, and respect

for user preferences.

Based on these findings, I have concluded this recommendation.

Adopt the minimize intrusion mantra and a less

is more data approach.

The minimize intrusion mantra is something

you should always be saying to yourself while designing

for user experience.

You can follow this mantra by setting

the system default settings and a basic level

with basic function.

Additionally, the less is more data

approach should be followed by collecting, using,

and storing only the necessary amount of data.

Make it so the user can change these things

later on once familiarity is established.

A smart system should dynamically

change settings based on direct user's request or feedback

loops.

Keeping your design less intrusive

and being thoughtful about your data collection and usage

will greatly improve your user experience design

and will help the user be comfortable enough

to try your experiences again.

Intent vs Interpretation - Duration: 4:16.

Hello, Earthlings!

You're watching Adam the Alien, and today I want to talk about authorial intent versus

reader intent.

More specifically, I kind of want to know what people think of, uh, some things that I wrote.

But I don't want you to be tainted by what I intended when I wrote it.

Now recently, I uploaded two video adaptations of old poems I wrote.

Like, back in 2003, 2004, something like that.

And already, I have seen people making assumptions about what these poems mean symbolically.

Things that I didn't really intend.

Which is great!

One of the things I have always loved is when I write stories with a lot of imagery,

people will tell me, "Oh!

I see how you did THIS or THAT, or how you inserted THIS idea.

And I thought that was really cool, thematically related to THIS."

And I'm sitting here going, "I did not do any of that, but thank you for the credit."

Nothing makes a writer look better than a reader who digs really deep in for meaning.

Now, that isn't to say things don't have meaning, but any kind of art is one of those things

that is going to have different meanings according to whoever's looking at it at the time.

So if you haven't seen the two poetry videos I made recently, there are links in the doobly-doo.

Possibly somewhere on the screen, depending on what platform you are watching this.

The first one was titled "Nowhere".

It's very short.

It has creepy dolls. It's great.

[DEEP VOICE] Ghosts enslaved

Restrained by their feet

And the second one is called "Drowning".

I wake up unable to move

This time it's gushing down

So what I would like you to do, if you're willing, is go to those videos.

Okay, so if you're watching this now, you should have already watched the "Nowhere"

and "Drowning" poetry videos.

You did that?

Good. Okay.

They don't have any meaning.

I mean, I'm sure they do, but I don't actually know what it is.

Because not only did I write these a long time ago, both poems were based on dreams.

The imagery used in the poem is literal.

I just wrote down, in a poem form, what I saw in my dreams.

The second one —"Drowning"— I do actually know what caused that dream, and that was

the fact that I was having a nosebleed in the middle of the night while I was asleep.

Which, as it started to run down my throat, translated into a dream of me drowning in

blood as I just kind of endlessly WOKE UP and WOKE UP and WOKE UP.

It was one of those stupid, annoying dreams where you don't know if you're ever awake.

And then when I finally did wake up, and there was still blood, I--I wasn't sure if I was

awake or not.

So, hopefully, before you got that explanation, you had already gone and watched

and interpreted those poems.

So now I want to know: how does knowing the inspiration and intent of the author change

any of that for you?

And do you still think you can get something out of it that I didn't intend?

What Is microLED? (is it better than OLED?) - Duration: 3:35.

microLed is Probably Something that you've heard at least once in the past few months,

most recently being in the announcement that Apple is planning on Using microLed for their

displays.

But what Exactly is microLed, How does it work and is it any different than the OLED

displays which we are used to?

microLED is a flat-panel display technology first developed by two professors of Texas

Tech University while they were at Kansas State University in the year 2000.

So the tech essentially is a couple years old.

It isn't relatively new but it isn't obsolete either.

microLED displays comprise several microscopic LEDs, which self-illuminate per display pixel

- just like an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panel would, only microLED uses inorganic

material.

This brings the benefit of ultra-low black levels, just like OLED, but with higher peak

brightness.

These tiny LEDs, consist of 3 sub-pixels that can each emit their own light.

The inorganic compound used in the production of microLED panels is called Gallium Nitrade

(GaN), and apart from an improved lifespan, it also offers as much as 30 times higher

total brightness than what OLED can produce.

This also means no burn-in, which is actually a big problem on OLED displays.

Also, I should mention here that microLED displays are much thinner than OLED displays

and therefore we might soon see thinner Smart Tv's and smartphones as time passes by.

There have been no commercial MicroLED products released, but the individual red, green, and

blue LEDs are microscopic.

Therefore more pixels can be fit into a screen and this means that we could see higher resolutions

on displays than we are currently used to.

More outstanding displays and at higher resolutions.

So, the question is :Why Don't We Already Use microLED displays in our devices.

Well, the simple answer is that it is expensive.

MicroLED isn't even all that new, it's just currently extremely difficult and expensive

to produce.

Without Getting directly into the specifics, microLED displays require extreme accuracy

to manufacture, especially since these displays have so many pixels.

Each needs to be calibrated individually and if one wrong step is made then that could

possibly mean an entire batch going bad.

Until production really scales up, MicroLEDs are going to be expensive; some estimates

say three to four times as expensive as OLEDs.

Eventually, if a lot of large-scale MicroLED factories come online and the manufacturing

process becomes more reliable, the cost should drop quite a lot, eventually reaching parity

with OLEDs and potentially even as low as high-quality LCDs.

But that's still a good bit of time away.

Top 10 Longest Books on My TBR - Duration: 7:53.

Hi, it's Maija here, and today I'm going to talk about the top 10 longest books on

my TBR. So I have seen this sort of video going around a while ago and most

recently I watched Cass from What Cass Read do this, and then I thought why not

do it myself. I was sort of curious at how long the longest books on my TBR

were. So I'm only going to be talking about the books on my owned physical TBR

and not my ebook TBR or my whole Goodreads TBR or anything, just the books

that I own. And I am cheating a bit, I am including 11 books, because two of the

books on this list are from the same series, so I thought why not add one more,

and also because that made the cutting off point at 500 pages, so these are all the

books over 500 pages that I own. It also works out because 500 pages is sort of

the point where I usually go "Do I want to read this book now or do I want to

pick up something shorter and read this later?" So since I haven't read these,

I can't tell you a lot about each of these books, but let's go and see what are the

books that I own that are over 500 pages. So just making this list at 508

pages is the Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. And this is perhaps the book

that I've owned the longest out of this pile. And I originally picked it up because I

was interested in the circus theme and also the fact that this was originally

written as a NaNoWriMo novel. I don't know anything else about this than it is

about circus and a couple of rival magicians,

I believe. Next up is Corambis by Sarah Monette at 513 pages and this is part

of a fantasy series that I bought all of the books - there are four books and this

is the final one in the series - I bought all of them at eBay in one bunch, and I

haven't read the rest of the series yet, so I can't have read this final book in

the series. This is a dark fantasy series, I don't know much about this, I just know

that I loved The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison which is a pen name of

Sarah Monette's, so I wanted to try out her other books. Next up comes a new release,

The City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty. And this is one of those books that was

bought to me as a birthday gift in December and I am planning to read this

quite soon. This is 532 pages. This is nominated for the BooktubeSFF Awards in

the Debut Novel category, I think it was. It is about djinn and I think it's set

in Cairo - 18th century Cairo. So it is a historical fantasy novel and

I don't really want to know much about it. I think the main character is a young

woman who perhaps has magic and she meets this djinn. At 561 pages comes

Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey, which is the first book in the Expanse

series. This is also one that I've owned for quite a while, a long while

before the TV series started. And I have actually watched the first season of the

TV series which I quite enjoyed, so I am looking forward to this. It's about this

group of people on this ice miner and then also this one detective looking

into a missing girl, and they all get tangled up into this political

tangle. I'm waiting to feel like reading some space opera and then I will pick

this one up, but one thing that is deterring me a bit is that I know that my favorite

character from the TV series, I think she is called Avasarala, isn't in this book yet.

Next I have A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness and this is a chunky

hardcover that clocks in at 594 pages. I believe this is part of an urban fantasy

series, it has witches and vampires and it might be a trilogy, and it might be

called the All Souls trilogy, but I'm not a hundred percent sure. I basically picked

this up because it was very cheap and it had vampires in it. Almost moving on to

the 600 page mark we have Lois McMaster Bujold's Cordelia's Honor at 596 pages.

This is actually two books in one, this is Barrayar and Shards of Honor,

and these are the books that are recommended to read first in the Miles Vorkosigan

series, which is this long-running science fiction series where the main

character is called Miles Vorkosigan, but these books tell about his mother,

Cordelia. I found this at a thrift store for under one euro, so of course I

picked it up. I've been meaning to read something from Lois McMaster Bujold for

ages, but I think I'm gonna start with the Curse of Chalion, which has been on my

fantasy TBR for ages - it's on my eBooks, so let's not talk about it more now.

At 599 pages we have another chunky hardcover and that is Illuminae

by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, and this is a young adult

science fiction book featuring two teens and an AI on a spaceship... that's all I

know. It was pretty popular, it is pretty popular even still on booktube, and I

won this in a giveaway from Libby like a year ago and I still haven't read it.

Sorry, Libby, I'm gonna read it this year. So now we're moving on to books that are

over 600 pages, and at 630 pages I have Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch.

This is the second book in the Gentleman Bastard series, and I think this is

featuring pirates. I did quite enjoy The Lies of Locke Lamora, not as much as a

lot of people did, but I did really like it and I found it fun.

This is also one that I've owned for a long while and been putting off because it's

so long. Please tell me in the comments that I should finally read this book. So

this is a high fantasy series about this group of thieves and it manages to be

quite clever at times. Also at 630 pages I have Fool's

Assassin by Robin Hobb, the trilogy where we return to Fitz and the Fool once

again. And I'm sort of dreading reading this: I know I'm going to love it, but

then there will be perhaps no more Fitz and the Fool books? I don't know. I'm sort

of feeling both excited and hesitant to jump onto this trilogy. So this is of

course a part of a long-running high fantasy series, Realm of the Elderlings

by Robin Hobb. The first book in the first trilogy was called Assassin's

Apprentice and that is the one that you should start with. So there's the

Farseer trilogy, the Liveship Traders trilogy, the Tawny Man trilogy, and the

Rain Wilds Chronicles, which is four books, and then there's this Fitz and the

Fool trilogy. So if you want to read about a royal assassin and a royal fool,

pick this one up. The second longest book on my TBR is The Historian by Elizabeth

Kostova. This is again one of those books that have been on my TBR for ages,

and this is 704 pages. This is once again a vampire book, I have shown this many

times before, I've always said that I will read this once I have reread Dracula,

I've been saying that for about two years. I really need to reread Dracula.

So yeah, Dracula actually, I think, features in this book, so I need to do

that. And the longest book on my TBR is perhaps a bit anticlimactic because you

saw one other book from this series in this video before, and that is The

Republic of Thieves by Scott Lynch and this is 722 pages.

This is the third book in the Gentleman Bastard series. I don't know what they do

in this one because I haven't read the second one, the pirate one. It sort of

looks like this Venice Carnival mask thing, and I'm all for that.

So those were the top ten longest books on my TBR.

I think Illuminae is the one that would go by the fastest, because it is written in

sort of these interviews and stuff, but the one that I am most excited to read is

The City of Brass, so I will read that quite soon, I think. I was going to say

"let me know if there's a hidden gem here", but I think the majority of these books

are quite well known and quite well loved on booktube, so just try to

encourage me to pick up some longer books in the comments. And also tell me

what do you consider a long book? I do get that hesitant feeling at

the 500 page mark, even though I like to read long fantasy books. These-

none of these were, like, 900 pages like some of them are. I think the Fool's

Assassin is actually quite a short book for a Robin Hobb book at six hundred and
