You know what gets my goat?

Overpricing a product just so it be offered a huge discount.

It's not only a bit morally suspect, it can be illegal.

Hi there, I'm Jon May, like the month, from MarketingMountain.com and today I'm taking

a look at 'fake discounts'.

This is where a company advertises a product far higher than it's ever sold, just to market

it at a huge discount.

Just last week I saw a pitch for a product priced at $700 and it was discounted down

to $150 after watching a webinar.

Great deal you might think, but it got me wondering, is it ever sold at the higher price?

Turns out, no.

Every channel to the website, across multiple months and it was the same promotion.

It was never being sold at the higher price.

In England you can get in a huge amount of trouble for this.

Tesco in 2011, was fined a record £300,000 after it was caught selling strawberries at

supposedly half price, but in truth they were sold at the higher price for a week and then

at the "half price" for three months.

Discounts like this can only be advertised as having a lower price for the same amount

of time it was on at a higher price.

You might think a small business would never get a fine that big and that's probably true,

but trading standards could impose a fine that's as big as the misleading pricing - which

could be tens of thousands of pounds!

Deep discounts can make people a lot more willing to buy.

But if you unwittingly stray across the line in your pricing you could end up in court

and Trading Standards taking all your profit.

And that's what gets my goat.

Upcoming Movies That Will Leave You Terrified This Halloween - Duration: 4:10.

Halloween is fast approaching, and it's bringing a ton of new horror movies to terrify you.

Here's how the theaters will trick and treat you this Halloween.

The Nun

The Conjuring Universe is screaming back into theaters with The Nun, which will add some

backstory to one of Conjuring 2's most terrifying characters.

A priest joins forces with a young nun in Romania to investigate a death at a remote,

probably haunted abbey in the mountains.

You can bet they'll come face to face with a few unholy horrors creeping around those

dark hallways.

And they are having nun of it.

American Horror Story's Taissa Farmiga plays the lead, with Bonnie Aarons returning as

the demonic nun Valak.

The Nun will return to scare the pew out of you on September 7th.

Mandy

When critics rave that Nicolas Cage gave "the performance of a lifetime," you know it's

something special.

"So what you hunting?

"It's Crazy evil!"

From writer-director Panos Cosmatos, Mandy is a tale of backwoods revenge that pushes

the horror envelope in ways few filmmakers would even attempt.

Red and Mandy lead an isolated existence deep in the woods.

That is, until Mandy breaks that cardinal rule of camping she attracts the attention

of a psychotic cult leader.

Obviously, things go bad, leading Red to embark on a spree of drug-fueled vengeance.

Behold the insanity when Mandy debuts September 14th.

Halloween

Remakes and reboots of classic horror franchises haven't exactly been cinematic gold in recent

years, but Halloween might be the horror movie that finally, violently breaks the mold.

Eastbound & Down star Danny McBride and producer David Gordon Green came together to work on

the concept for the new film, which they pitched directly to the franchise's original creator

John Carpenter, who loved it, even though he never wanted a sequel in the first place.

Why this time?

"It's pretending the other sequels didn't happen."

This new film takes place after the events of the 1978 original, and judging by the trailers,

Halloween is going to be pure terror.

Take a look when it hits theaters on October 19th.

Overlord

A World War II-set horror outing from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production company, Overlord

asks the question: what's worse than dropping into a German-filled warzone?

Simple: dropping into a German-filled warzone along with goopy zombie-monsters.

The movie follows some American paratroopers who land in German-occupied France and find

themselves fighting for their lives against bloodthirsty monsters.

Since this is a Bad Robot production, it wasn't long before rumors started flying that Overlord

was yet another stealth entry in the Cloverfield universe.

Despite the speculation, J.J. Abrams says it definitely isn't.

And that's totally okay: a World War II survival horror movie sounds like a great time all

by itself.

Check it out when Overlord premieres on November 9th.

The Predator

The original Predator immersed audiences in an exciting blend of sci-fi, action, and horror,

and the sequel looks like it's going back to those terrifying roots.

Co-writer and director Shane Black promises that The Predator will carry a hard R rating,

giving the alien hunter free reign to do what it does best: take loads of guys.

The film's suburban setting should provide even more opportunities for thrills, because

the scariest monster is the one in your own backyard… and we don't mean your Weird Uncle

Charlie.

Activate your heat vision and look for The Predator in theaters on September 14th.

Venom

While it may not be a horror movie in the classic sense, Venom is shaping up into something

terrifying.

Director Ruben Fleischer is promising a horror-tinged film with a Venom who isn't afraid to get

bloody and chomp on a few heads.

"So many snacks, so little time."

All signs point to Sony getting things right with their second crack at the deadly symbiote

and we'll see just how right when Venom hits theaters on October 5th.

Stossel: These Students Know More Than Politicians - Duration: 4:08.

Are you smarter than a politician?

Anybody?

The answer is yes if you were among the

millions of students who,

thanks to the charity run by this high school teacher,

get to watch my videos in class.

It should only take you a couple of minutes.

Actually, not all the videos are mine but

the charity's called Stossel In The Classroom

because I offer free videos to

any teacher who wants video teaching aids

for courses in economics, government,

critical thinking, and current events.

Watching and discussing the videos gives

kids new perspective on things.

But the people that accept welfare, over time

they lose the incentive to work.

Every year we hold an essay contest.

Winners get money plus a free trip for them

and their teacher to visit us here

in New York City.

This year's contest invited students to

write about price gouging,

a practice hated by the media and most politicians.

Jeff Sessions and the President of the United States

will not tolerate gouging.

Gouging becomes an issue every hurricane season,

because after storms, some merchants

raise prices.

They're taking advantage of us.

That leads politicians to pass laws that say:

During a state of emergency,

you cannot substantially raise prices

whether it's a hotel room, fuel,

commodities such as water, generators,

you cannot raise prices substantially

and that's what these bad people are doing.

Fortunately, our students get to hear a

Nobel Prize winning economist

give the other side of the argument.

The gougers deserve a medal.

The gougers are heroes,

said Milton Friedman

because they take risks to bring in goods

that people desperately need.

After Hurricane Katrina,

one so-called gouger was John Shepperson.

Watching news reports about Katrina,

he learned that people desperately needed things.

My wife just got out of the hospital.

She's very sick, and we need a generator.

So John bought 19 generators,

put them in a rented U-Haul,

and drove it 600 miles to

part of Mississippi which had no

electricity.

Five million people in this region are without power.

John offered to sell his generators

for twice what he paid for them.

People were eager to buy.

People were excited. We had a product they needed.

But Mississippi police wouldn't let John sell them.

They called that price gouging.

Instead, they confiscated his generators

and locked John up in this jail.

So did the public benefit?

No.

What do we need? Come on guys.

Generators, water, food.

Somebody needs to bring these products

to people

when there are disasters and emergencies,

and this is gonna be one person

that's not going to be there that

they took out of the equation.

Students who entered our video essay contest

expanded on that point.

In modern day, you see countries like Venezuela

suffer from the fact that their

governments continue to place price controls

on all items.

17 year-old Annelise Kofod

of Raleigh, North Carolina submitted this video

and won our high school award.

34 the 50 US states have laws against price gouging.

As I did more and more research,

I was like, okay maybe price gouging

isn't such a bad thing.

Erika Lewis of Towson University won the

college-level category.

Sellers are able to earn more profit and buyers are

capable of getting the supplies they desperately need.

Actually the price gougers are the moral ones.

17 year old Maggie Hroncich of Grove City,

Pennsylvania

won her high school essay contest.

If you just look at the economics,

the most people are helped

if you keep the government out of it.

When people hear price gouging,

they think, oh gouging

this awful thing that you'd think of,

but it really is kind of just another name

for supply and demand.

Wisdom from students helped to look at

all sides of the issue

by teachers who use our videos.

Next year's essay contest will be announced soon.
