Hi guys, it's me - Willy again with a new episode.
It's been a while since the last time,
I haven't had much time until now.
Some time ago, I met a guy with a particular talent.
Today, I will introduce him to you.
As I said earlier, I'm here today with a guest.
His Name is Linus.
- Hi!
We haven't known each other for very long,
and we actually started talking through Instagram.
He wanted to take photos of me
and I really liked his projects.
I didn't know what to expect,
when we met in Berlin a few weeks ago
because I didn't know much about it beforehand.
He had two suitcases with him
and I was highly surprised.
I didn't really know what was about to happen.
Then I realised what he was doing.
He created the account "Wigglepics".
Wigglepics are basically moving photos.
You may have seen them before.
The person in the photo isn't moving but the background is
and that's what Linus is doing.
In front of me, you can see his camera
- and actually it's made out of 16 cameras? - Yeah, 16 cameras.
He built it by himself
and you won't find it anywhere else in the world.
It's absolutely fascinating that he built it all by himself -
he even coded his own program.
He is going to tell you a bit more now.
- Thanks for those kind words, Willy. - With pleasure.
It all started when I first saw that effect in a Mura Masa music video.
That was 4-5 years ago.
I really liked it but didn't bother to look it up.
But after that, I saw the effect again in a music video from Lil Yachty.
I really liked the effect.
They only used analog photos.
But I thought there should be better and faster ways to make it digital.
There had to be ways to optimise it.
That's when I got the idea to create a new digital analog camera.
I started the project one year ago.
I've been developing the camera day by day since then.
So, you started 1 year ago
with the idea but without the know-how
and you wanted to create that camera?
Wow!
Interesting, keep going.
I started with a smaller prototype,
where I first connected 5 cameras with each other.
Just so I can see how it works with the digital cameras
and it did work out pretty well.
So I started with Stage 2,
to build a bigger one, which you can see in front of us.
- How many cameras are in this one now? - There are 16 digital cameras in here.
- Are all cameras the same model? - Exactly
It's the Sony RX100.
I've chosen this model because it's a small camera with decent picture quality,
that's also light in weight.
There is some weight with 16 cameras but it's still easy to carry.
As we can see, there are 16 cameras connected -
please explain how it all works.
They all need power as well.
Please explain how they work together as one camera.
I coded several microcontrollers
and synchronised all the cameras, so they work as one unit.
And now, you can use it just like a normal camera
because all the individual cameras are connected.
There is no need to adjust each camera individually.
- So you don't need to do it on each camera. - Yeah.
- That's super handy. - Exactly.
You coded the whole program by yourself?
Yes.
- So it works as one camera? - Exactly, that's why it's easy to use.
- It's easy to work with the camera. - Okay.
It's pretty close to using a normal camera.
Back in the day,
when we started shooting
I was wondering what the hell this piece was.
I was overwhelmed but also excited at the same time.
- Did you create the name "Wigglepics"? - Yes, I did.
- Many people are now using the word and you kinda started a hype. - Perfect.
Most of the people like it and wanna have it too
and with this camera, it's easier than the others.
When you set the camera up,
what do people need to know to get the perfect photo out of it?
Good question.
Just like other shoots, you need good settings,
nice people and good vibes.
The lighting is important as well but not for all photos.
Especially for the Wigglepics, it's good to have some dynamic in the photo.
Of course, you can just let the model stay there,
but it's way better if you can freeze something in the background
so that the effect works even better.
I can use a lighter in my hand.
That works pretty well.
- Fire is always a good idea.
- We used a shoe which I threw up in the air, - Yeah, exactly
You can see the photo next.
My technical understanding isn't that good
but I really like the movement.
I'm also amazed that you had the vision and worked day and night on it.
And here, after one year - we can already see the result.
- Have you gotten some jobs with it? - Yup.
Or what else are you shooting with it?
It's still in the beginning,
the development took some time
until it finally worked.
- I would have needed more than 20 years for that
I used all my free time to work on this project.
- Worth the hard work.
Thanks!
Last week, I worked with Adidas
we had two really good days.
First, the Tango League which was a soccer event.
Second day was with two rappers.
- Are you allowed to tell us the names of the rappers? - Yeah!
The first day was with Olexesh
and the second day was with Nimo and Capo.
It was a lot of fun!
I did it with a friend, Jonas.
- Shotout to Jonas! - Yeah, super nice dude.
Cool!
How did the rappers react?
Photo or video dudes will understand quickly, I guess
but did the rappers understand it?
Did they want to see the results asap
or where they more chilled about it?
They really liked it and were fascinated as well.
Not many people know it
and they haven't seen a camera like this before.
But after they've seen the photos, they're all fascinated.
Photographers will know what a normal camera weighs.
I have a small one which is super light
but even a DLSR has some weight,
and then there is your camera over here.
You can't hold it the whole time or?
So, how do you handle it?
I'm using a camera belt so that my hands are free.
-That's super smart. - Yeah.
Not like the typical tourist with a small camera.
I still remember how all the people were looking in Berlin when we did the shoot.
Great job!
- Thank you!
I see you even built your own luggage case
so you can travel with the camera,
which is fascinating as well.
Please tell me more about it.
Not only did he build a special camera, he also built a special case for the camera.
I knew I needed the camera to be mobile so that I can take it with me wherever I go.
There was no way I could take such a big piece with me.
I wanted the camera to be easy to carry around.
That's why I bought a Rimowa case
which is the standard cabin size.
- A small black standard rimowa case.
Then I started to modify this case.
The first step was to take the straps and cushion from a backpack.
Then screw and stitch it onto the back of the case.
So that I can use the luggage case as a backpack.
The camera is tough but it's better when it's in an extra case on my back.
- And there's even a fan inside? - Yes, in case it gets too hot inside.
I can't imagine a better way to carry a camera around
but have a look yourself.
Now, the most important question:
If you wanna talk about it.
How many working hours did you put into that?
and obviously, how much money did you spend on it?
The working hours were way more than the money I spent on it.
- Just roughly so we know.
We're talking about 500 to 1000 working hours.
It was a lot of time because I had to develop most of the things on my own.
As there wasn't a camera like this before.
- That's why you here today, to support this great work.
Thanks again.
The costs were quite high since it's made out of 100% carbon.
The Sony cameras weren't cheap either.
We're talking about more than €10,000.
- Wow, €10,000!
So, if you thinking about creating something special, make sure you have enough time
and money as well.
But as you can see, the result is unique.
I'm so impressed.
But, there's still a topic we have not spoken about yet.
If you take photos with the camera,
how do you get those out of the camera onto your computer?
Are you using a cable like most of the other photographers
or a SD card
or is there any program?
- Please explain it. - Good question.
My idea was to make it easy and fast to use.
So that you have fun using it.
That's why the camera has a USB-C port
so I can easily connect it with my MacBook.
- All of the cameras together have one port? - All the cameras are linked with each other
- so only one USB-C port. - Okay, I get it.
I also developed a program for my MacBook
which takes all the photos from the camera and converts them straight into a Wigglepic.
The program does it all automatically.
So after you take some shots, you connect the camera to your MacBook
and the program you coded creates the Wigglepics instantly?
- Exactly, the photos get converted automatically.
But what if you had different shoots?
Can you still select the photos?
The program itself has several adjustments,
so you can edit a lot.
It's crazy.
I can't say it often enough -
It's so fascinating,
even if I'm only understanding half of the things you're saying.
It's good to know that there are still people who believe in something
and are ready to put so much effort into it.
You need focus to make this happen.
He had to build the camera all on his own
and even coded his own program for the photos.
I couldn't do it.
It's insane.
Thanks a lot for your time showcasing the camera.
- Pleasure.
We're gonna head off and take some more shots,
which you'll see next.
Linus, to sum it all up
is there anything else you wanna tell us about this camera?
What are your plans for the future?
Since you're still trying to improve it every single day -
Do you wanna make the camera smaller?
Or work with a company to make it available for more people?
The camera is super nice but still a big piece.
It's a bit of an effort to carry it around even with your custom suitcase.
What are your plans for the future?
There are many ideas for the future.
How to further improve it -
This won't be the last edition of the camera.
I'm going to keep on developing the camera.
But, I can't tell you more secrets about it for now.
Fair play to keep the secret to yourself,
since you built it all by yourself.
Keep it as your baby.
Hopefully you guys enjoyed the video about Linus and his Wigglepics.
Make sure to check his Instagram,
we're gonna show it next
and you can find it in the descriptions below as well.
Make sure you check out his photos.
He's super talented.
I'm super happy that we met.
Thanks again for explaining the camera.
I'm very thankful for your time.
Thank you as well for making it happen.
Let's greet mum quick.
- Hello, mum! - Hello!
That's it for today.
We're heading out to take some more photos.
Stay tuned.
Peace.
