What is Taps? - Duration: 4:46.At military funerals in the United States, it has become customary to play "Taps."
Who wrote this piece of music?
How long has it been in use?
Taps is a piece of music that is not only played at military funerals, but is also played
each night on military bases to signal "lights out".
There are multiple stories related to the origin of Taps, as well as how the piece of
music received its name.
There are some who believe the name "Taps" was derived from the old military term "tattoo".
A military tattoo was a tune that was played each evening to inform the troops that it
was time to extinguish the lights.
However, there was also a practice of striking a drum three times after the playing of the
tattoo.
These drum beats became known as "The Drum Taps" and was later shortened to simply
"Taps".
This is most likely how the legendary tune received its name.
The tune itself was arranged by Brigadier General Daniel Butterfield of the Union Army,
during the Civil War.
He adapted it from an older "lights out" tattoo that had been used by the French Army.
By the end of the war, "Taps" was being used by both the Union and Confederate forces
to signal "lights out".
There are at least two well-known stories related to how "Taps" came to be used
at military funerals.
One story suggests that a man named Robert Ellicombe, an officer in the Union Army, asked
that "Taps" be played at his son's funeral (who was in the Confederate Army).
This story claims that Ellicombe had found the tune written on a piece of paper in the
son's pocket.
However, this story has been proven to be apocrypha (a story of doubtful origin) because
there is no record of a Robert Ellicombe serving in the Union Army.
The more readily accepted story is that of Captain John C. Tidball.
A corporal serving under Captain Tidball had died, and Captain Tidball wished to bury the
young man with full military honors.
This would have included a three-gun salute.
However, for military reasons, he was not allowed to fire the guns.
As a substitute, it struck him as appropriate to have "Taps" played.
The song seemed appropriate to those in attendance, and it quickly caught on.
In 1891, "Taps" became a standard feature at all U.S. military funeral services.
It is also still played on military bases to signal the end of each day.
While "Taps" is usually played instrumentally, with either a bugle or trumpet, there are
also lyrics which accompany the melody.
The lyrics of the first verse are as follows: Day is done, gone the sun
From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky, All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.

November 2018 Member of the Month - Andrew Bellush - Duration: 7:12.I don't think I've ever been member of a month
this is some fucking cool shit
oh you're sitting
yeah
there we go, good
Ok
All right
is it going right now?
Hi, this is Chris from East Ave. Barbell I'm here with November's member of the month Andrew Bellush.
So Andrew you just had a strongman show a few weeks ago...
Yes
what for the name that show?
It was Orange Elite IV... it was Orange Elite IV
I don't remember which number, he's done a bunch but it was the Orange Elite... it was Oktoberfest
Octoberfest, cool
and it was fuckin it was a sweet competition we ran really well yeah you
placed fifth out of 13 I believe yeah okay a middleweight class nice are you
probably didn't look at the scoresheet
I knew I didn't win so yeah I just uh
yeah but that's cool I didn't realize that I would I had actually I think I
knew I had a place fifth I didn't realize that many people competed in there
yeah middleweight class was always really really stacked yeah but it's
probably the hardest class to compete in. How long have you been competing?
been consistently strongman for four years at this point
I used to Olympic lift a little bit and also competed in that as well
Yeah I'm sure that's a pretty good foundation for the strongman training
it helped with the speed you know the general I had I had like I felt I just always felt like I had the
opportunity to you know use my jerk when I needed to
yeah could always jerk it
Yeah?
better than most guys so
excellent. But just kinda backtracking a little bit so on the show
actually there was a couple events that really stood out to me and the two events
were the stone to shoulder event which you placed
third place in that event and also the Keg carry for distance in one minute you
actually got second place in that with the total of 276 feet what was kind of
your strategy going into those two events?
a good buddy and mentor Tony
Tony Kalisz so he deficits you know yeah it's it's all about how much work are you
willing to put in and especially with the carry it was you know alright pick up the
heaviest keg you've got put the put the timer you know put the timer to a
minute and just go, go until you can't see anymore. so big a big part of it and
if this goes on with a stone as well and a lot of it is just pain tolerance you
know so like for instance in the Keg [carry] you feel tired you know ten seconds in
yeah you know you want to put it down but can you hold onto it for another 50
seconds and with the the stone I've always felt like I had a really good
foundation in stones because when I first learned how to do them with
Michael Gill out in Buffalo we used to do like 20 rep sets you know and you
would just learn that hip snap motion over and over and over and so I feel like that was helpful
How do you think you performed overall?
I feel like something I've seen in the past 3 shows that I've been lucky enough to do, the one thing
that I had to celebrating is that I've never you know I've never bitched out at
the end of the show so I finished strong in the last three shows of that done
where I had the conditioning to go all the way up to the last minute and
complete the last of it not to say that people who didn't finish were bitches or
anything like that I'm just saying for me personally I felt really good that I
was strong enough to finish those shows with good performances
excellent
you know I did'nt... I wasn't gassed before then
yeah having the endurance to finish the entire show is actually it's a big deal you know
so what's next for you what's next for Andrew Bellush? I'm gonna go to sleep
I uh, yeah I think, um, trying to stay healthy is always difficult not
difficult but just like that's like always my number one so like just
working through any imbalances and trying to address those as I continue to
train there's a show coming up in January the strongest co-ed Team [See link in Description!] okay
I'll be competing I have just asked Meg to do it with me, yeah so right now we're we're partnered
up on that we're looking forward to that now apparently it's also a qualifier so
I would really like to qualify you move on to to start training and looking
forward towards nationals I honestly just feel really cool it
feels really good given where I started that I get to roll
with the big boys you know like I don't think I don't think I ever even dreamed
in my life that I would ever break like 200 pounds yeah you know like I wasn't
built like that really so it's been really cool to just match myself up
against some of those monsters and continue to try to become a monster myself
Excellent you know, the pursuit of strength, you know, it just goes a long way. So why do you love East Ave. Barbell?
Uh, It's been my home now since I was I mean I think seven years it was before it was East Ave Barbell
then to have it come in and be a place now that has its
you know a name to it and has a crew has surrounded by like-minded people
surrounded by people and really more than just training partners right you've
got a group of friends you've got a group of people who are there for each
other I love that aspect of anywhere that I train I've always noticed that I
felt the most understood by by people who I train with because I think that we all
share something of a similar insanity yeah so so it's a worthy obsession a
righteous obsession right and that's that's what you get here is you get a
group of people who come in you've got a shitty day
you and this happened at work and as soon as you go through the door it
doesn't matter you're here now so that's East Ave Barbell.
