things but mostly candy and pumpkins so first up on the agenda is Halloween

Pumpkin Carving Alternatives | Halloween Safety Tips for Parents - Duration: 17:38.
hey everyone welcome to a special edition of mom talks new year our ask a
children's Specialty Care Center with some special guests today this is doctor
Bullivant one of our pediatricians during the CSEC with kid docs and then
we also have lovely Maya Maya how old are you six and Timothy held our yellow
tint Ted and we are going to talk about Halloween safety some things we can do
to keep our kids safe and have a really good time this season
so dr. Beaumont what are some things we need to keep in mind to keep our kids
safe well since Halloween is a great time to
use their imagination costumes are really really important so I think of
costumes from head to toe you want your kids to be able to see clearly because
it's dark and so make sure they can see out of their masks might be even better
not to wear a mask make sure the eye holes are big enough
and then as they're walking just make sure that they're not carrying too many
things and maybe I think and down the stairs and as we work our
way down to its feet make sure that hems are short enough that we're not tripping
over things and everybody wear their everyday tennis shoes what cuz that they
get excited and will start running around and moms and dads are chasing so
comfortable shoes for mom and dad also recommended I I know that when we do our
big pumpkin carving at our house it is slight chaos everyone's hands are
leeches pumping and is pulling out guts and slimy gross things and we have sharp
objects flying around our house so we wanted to also show you guys some
alternatives to actually carving pumpkins so we have some glitter and
glue we have accessories so that's what Timothy and Maya are helping us with
putting up stickers and let us know if you have any questions on it maybe some
pumpkin carving alternatives or just Halloween safety in general because
that's what we're here for and that's what we want to fill you guys in on so
everyone has a really great Halloween so we talked about math so they get the
masks do we need to cut bigger holes if it doesn't look like they can see yeah
carving them out a little bit okay making sure that the mask isn't falling
off what about some alternatives to wearing a message maybe wearing some
make that person why might that be a better idea yeah that's better only
because then you don't have any falling over their face or falling off
or play Macbeth fallen over yeah and ended up it's certainly a good idea
there's a lot of makeup out there
non-toxic we should probably add you know you should use peat that is you
know don't go get your full paint or your your earth disguise yeah if
probably would have heard coming off too but a lot of chemicals on your child
again but coming off doesn't sound like it sounds very appealing one other thing
I was thinking about is I have a little girl and I grew up wanting to be put to
us and I wanted to wear my my heels and wear my long hems why are we talking

popular houses where it's known you can get Hansel's we can be yeah the kingside
swim the bar houses houses have lines and lines of crowds of kids
Timothy remind me what are you gonna be prowling um I'm gonna be like a more to

you can see through it okay and you're gonna be one color what color are you
gonna be black black okay we're going to touch on that in a minute and miss Maya
what are you gonna be for Halloween Moana now are you cold this morning cuz
it's kind of a warmer climate than we have here in st. Louis it's just us have
to walk fast I have your snowsuit on underneath your
work I know I've done it more MORE um so so with wearing a darker costume
obviously maybe it's not a more suit did I say that right yes okay good maybe
it's autumn or see if maybe it's just a black paint or a glass black coat how
can we make sure our kids are being seen in the target well there's a couple ways
I think that you can get blow sticks now almost anywhere you I'm not going for
the fourth of July but those come a lot of places dump those in there yeah
also reflective tape is a good idea at those different stores
carrying the flashlight yeah we also have yeah little black shirt
though they might I'm easily seen it on India right so it's very important that
your kid be seen pedestrian accidents are actually the number one risk for you
on Halloween for you and your children because there's lots of people out it's
typically after dark and there's also a lot of cars out full with kids and
everybody's very excited most of the time
last about two hours sorry has to be very hectic to our periods - I'll cover
so how about very careful when you're out absolutely
partisan on the street so how about that a told added of having your parents
check your candy before you I don't think it's a pretty good idea I think
probably a lot of candy crickets Jackson true but I still think it's a pretty
good idea to glance over the key to make sure back to be in terms of yeah some
safety tips for kids who are going out with you're treating with mom and dad or
maybe even without I would say that they need to be in a group probably more than
just a couple of kids to always know where they're gonna be so
you need to sit down and talk with them about where are you going
to be it's an advantage these days to be able to check in on them
and know where they are I think it's good to have a shorter amount of time
that they're going to be out by themselves
schedule t-shirt if you have any questions make sure you let us know let
us know where your kits gonna be prowling my oldest son Connor is gonna
be a SWAT police officer very specific on that because the helmet said spot
which I'm pretty sure is the only reason we bought the costume and so then the
three year old twins because they don't have a say just yet get to be little
prisoners which is the meter created um and like we were talking about the house
last year the twins or Dalmatians because Connor wanted to be a
firefighter and the Dalmatian cross champion with these like little slip
over their shoes booties and those things we had to pull off by the second
house because they were tripping over them that huge so like you were saying
about the tripping hazards it's not just like the fun little high heels or the
hands it can sometimes be the accessory upon of the costume that that gets you
so yeah that's when my kids are gonna be so I was just thinking him when we're
talking about going down the street in neighborhoods how important is it to go
on a lighted street or you know in an area maybe are a little more familiar
with I think it's definitely important to go in an area that you're familiar
I think if you're gonna go in an area that you're not familiar with and again
go with the group stay with the domes and I wouldn't go in
any area that's not like it because again it's just that time where
pedestrian accidents are hot so be smart about that
here's another what are some resources if my child does fall down or gets hurt
on Halloween what are some resources here at Children's don't take care of
them morning-after or moving before yeah well
hopefully most of those things are going to be mild we have an After Hours
service or for five kids that you can call and make a triage with if it seems
like something that's more severe than that and certainly you should call your
doctor Children's er is always a great place to go if it's clearly an emergency
situation that would be a hard fall immediately I'm like the heart fall off
the curb that's what yeah you know that's one today maybe that's why
Connors wearing a helmet yes that is wise new white Smith's because we also
realized Connors very first time trick-or-treating we didn't get the
chance to check this candy because we found out that he was eating the candy
as he received it because it's very very excited and so then we got done with
going to like three houses because it was only like three years old so we're
like okay we'll just go to these very close neighbors it'll be a fun cute
thing and then we'll call it a night and we're like okay buddy let's see what
you got and there was nothing but wrappers and we realized oh boy all this
can and of course all the neighbors all copper were so excited were giving
hinges handfuls of candy what do we do if we're seeing the homemade treats
unless you know the person I think if you know the person that I think of my
three things or yeah otherwise I don't think it's very common yeah
otherwise I think I would reject it okay I just don't know and then that also
brings up in my mind told me treats are always always a no-no for any kids who
have allergies oh it's been at least one out of every 20 to one out of every 25
kids has some type of food allergy hi a whole nother ballgame for them in terms
of having to read labels and not eating as much of the candy so having some
different sources so I think that's good simply so tell us about our stickers
that we have on our exam there what is the teal pumpkin the teal pumpkin
project is a project from the food allergy Network which is a national
network here in the United States and worldwide as well and it is a support
network for families of children with food allergies they publish information
about labels that may have been wrong to assume you have been properly labeled if
you're part of their organization they publish cookbooks that may not have
that we don't have eggs or milk in the recipes and in general they're just a
very good
so something definitely something I think about as the candy distributor may
be having some not you know if you're gonna do M&MS maybe having a peanut free
M&Ms as well as as well as peanut and asking and seeing or maybe some loot
free options I don't think most candy has an egg in it but you know ma so the
two projects specifically to have candy or maybe the pretzels or something that
is peanut and nut free
and three ads to be not made
which could be really serious for a kid with allergies and coming into contact
with you know right places and everything it could really have a really
bad night for that so yeah kids aren't used to seeing yeah and I think it's a
good idea for not pennies though I don't know but it'll make Breyers I can accept
penny don't be I think we have to revisit our artists really quick this is
so cool Maya might have gone above and beyond and literally is decorating the
stem my Ocoee turning around and hold it up oh my goodness I know she's not done
yet guys can we see it can we see it look at this
this is terrifying it looks almost like an alien like a
glittery Lady Gaga alien thing alright we're here at shot your cat so no that
is so cool no sticker or nip no scissors nothing sharp to poke so maybe an
alternative to think about if your child maybe isn't quite at that hardcore
carving stages we were also at me in debate I painted this one at my house
last night I am NOT an artist I am NOT crafty but this is how I came out I say
donut I had a couple people say cupcake is delicious so something to think about
and I have to call off this pumpkins I almost forgot this is from her friends
from the magic house they made it and brought it to us and so if you ever come
to the CSEC before halloween this is where you'll see when you come in so
thank you so much to our friends at the magic house for that also I want to
bring up if you want to see some real pumpkin carving experts by profession
yes I mean wow this Sunday we are doing chefs vs. surgeons along
with STL mag and we're gonna have six of our st. Luke's Children's Hospital
Surgeons we're each going to drop the scalpel kiss the pumpkin carving knife
and carve pumpkins and then we're gonna have six chefs from the st. Louis area
that are also going to be participating they're gonna go head to head
we're gonna figure out who's about the best chops
oh yeah okay so that is a Hyundai and since it is st. Louis we would be remiss
if we did not talk about families jokes you know I never heard of this until I
moved here so that's a local thing for any of our viewers outside of st. Louis
st. Louis tradition is to get your candy you have to tell a joke it does marriage
geez it doesn't matter how long it is you have to tell a joke so if you've got

THIS THING CAN SHOOT ARROWS?! *Archery Sling Shot Challenge* - Duration: 11:42.
what is that fair one welcome to another episode of world record Wednesdays where
we break or set a world record every single Wednesday now this video is not
sponsored by this company but the company called the pocket shot
sent me some of their products and I just really thought I'd make a cool
video and I think you guys would enjoy it this is the pocket shot so this thing
is like a a slingshot you put your ammo in there you pull back so we're gonna
test its accuracy we're gonna have a little challenge between Cathy and I
we're gonna see how strong it is how strong it shoots and then at the end of
this video we're gonna do a world record using some of the attachments including
this thing and apparently you can add this attachment to have it shoot arrows
like a bow and arrow so that's gonna be the last thing we do
make sure you watch the end here we go so I've literally never taught this
thing before we've got the practice and Moe just their little plastic pellets
they also sent like the metal real bb's before I start just to see if I can hit
this red cup with one of the practice pellets okay so I'm going to put the
plastic pellet in here I'm gonna hold on to it shoot first first attempt ever
it's hard to know it so here's what we've learned shot number one it is
powerful I should be wearing our protection and we should not shoot with
a metal background so hold on one second look at that I actually brought a target
on why I didn't put that up first got it alright third a 30 tips hit my target
from there a decent decent distance it's pretty cool it's it's great it really
isn't mean so just so small it is called the pocket shot you can put your bucket
boom so it's pretty accurate didn't take me
that long to hit the target a couple times I was thinking be more difficult
because there's no sights there's no like any like scope or anything to look
through you just gonna have to hope it shoots straight it is definitely
powerful but I want to test and see how powerful it is and I think I brought
something they'll be a good test for that okay we've got 10 plates lined up
and we're gonna see how strong the little pocket shot is you guys might
remember that video we did with the crossbow
and so we're gonna do the same thing we did there so leave a comment how many
plates you think it's gonna shoot through I think just one thing call 10
somewhere between pause the video right now and leave a comment
alright let's figure it out go 3 2
it didn't go all the way through so went through four plates I not gonna lie I
was expecting to go through all ten but that was just with the practice pellets
let's see what happens with the the bb's the metal balance okay so now we are
using the metal pellets the the real ammunition for this thing I'm pretty
sure it's going through going through all ten in ten all the way through
here's this level
Wow the slo-mo was going over 400 frames per second and you can still barely see
the pellet moving at all you just see the plates kind of move so we're gonna
slow down the slow-mo camera even slower to almost a thousand frames per second
you see if we can capture that that little ball take a look that slow-mo
this one that time that put some pretty serious holes through the plate and you
can even see in the slo-mo the little pieces of plate just like flying out
pretty cool also you guys know we always refer to this gym as the really hot gym
but Texas Texas is Texas and so when from being really hot to really cold
well Castle I think we've we've tested out pretty good are you ready to try it
out yeah and I'll give you a few warm-ups and then it's time for a
competition all right Cassie's gonna get a couple attempts first and show me what
you got so this is the like a hand mount
definitely easier to hold pull back a little bit harder than that hey you know
that was good last practice out great okay good you ready now it's time for
the challenge okay so Cassie and I will both get five shots there are six cups
the little ones are worth two big ones are worth one most points win Cassie how
do you feel I hit the board twice that is true miss you're nervous no how about
now okay a little nervous you've got two more attempts to get some points on the
board
my shot one point I got one neither of us are experts that was not not a very
good impressive performance so Cassie just
has to hit one of those green cups or two red cups to beat me miss miss miss
are you nervous Oh
last one
all right it's a shootout okay so if I hit if I hit something
I win you win back to you Oh almost hit on the way back okay well I'm not even
that happy with myself because this all this competition proved that neither of
us are that good yet now it's time to attach the the function to make this
little thing into a bow and arrow okay so we're swapping out with the
arrow pouch gotta unscrew this
okay so it's ready to shoot arrows now and we have some arrows here and
including some some rubber tips so that they're not gonna do much damage here in
the gym as I get used to this archery or very long time that's pretty sweet it's
so crazy that like you know usually you have some big big bow but all you have
is this little thing you know try

this like piece of rubber and a ring is and it's insane that it not only shoots
a little balls but the arrows I don't you thinking Josh this is really weird
specific world record pull up I'm gonna pause it right there almost done at in
this video I never want to apologize for my content I always want to put out
stuff that you guys will love and that I'm proud of but I'm only the first to
say that was not the most impressive world record that's ever been done in
this series but I want to make it up to you by showing you some clips from
upcoming world record Wednesdays
