Hey all, and welcome to my vlog! My name is Erin and this is some spooky stories
from around Canada. So in honor of it being October, the month of Halloween,
I wanted to go through and talk about some of the really cool places that I've visited
that are the center of hauntings around Canada.
I don't tend to watch, read, or write horror because I'm actually a huge baby with all that stuff and it freaks
me out for months after, BUT for some reason I really love haunted places.
I love the stories that come with them, I love the way that it weaves history
and it just gives you a more fun and rounded picture of the location that you're in.
These are all locations that I have personally been. History is full of tons of terrible things and events
and haunted places are one of those really neat spots where that all kind of coalesces.
Number One is Skeleton Park or McBurney Park in Kingston, Ontario
McBurney Park is nicknamed Skeleton Park for the simple fact that it is grass on top of a graveyard.
Over the years the headstones have started to push up through the grass and they found
multiple human remains. It was used as a cemetery until about 1865 but at
that point it was filled to capacity of following a string of epidemics
including malaria, typhus, and cholera. About 1,000 of the bodies were
reinterred but there are still about 9,000 left in the ground.
Number Two is Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria, British Columbia.
Craigdarroch Castle is not officially recognized as being haunted, at least by the people who run it.
But despite that there have been multiple ghost sightings over the years
including a little girl, a maid, and a pair of women's feet on the stairs.
The castle was commissioned by a Robert Dunsmuir and construction completed
in 1890 but he unfortunately died the year previous so he never actually got to enjoy it.
After the end of the First World War it served as a military
hospital and afterwards it was associated with Victoria College and in
the 70s it became a museum which you can now visit.
Number Three is Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia The Legend of it's name comes from the
story of a shipwreck where supposedly only one young girl survived, she was
adopted into a family they named her Peggy.
There's also a report of a ghost named Margaret who supposedly wanders the rocks mourning
the loss of her children. Peggy's Cove actually suffered a modern-day tragedy.
In 1998 Swissair flight 111 crashed into the water just off Peggy's Cove and it
resulted in the loss of everyone on board.
Number Four is the West Point Lighthouse on Prince Edward Island.
The lighthouse is supposedly haunted by the inns first keeper named Willy. Most of the ghostly happenings
appropriately revolve around lights turning themselves on. The lighthouse was built in 1875 and
they added an inn portion to it in 1984 so you can go and stay in the haunted lighthouse.
Number Five is the Frank slide in Frank, Alberta.
Frank slide is the site of a massive rockslide that took place in 1903 when the side of
Turtle Mountain broke free and demolished part of the town in the middle of the night.
The exact number of people that died is unclear but
they estimate it being around 90 people, most of which are still under the rocks.
A lot of the deceased residents were never removed from the rubble simply because
they weren't able to. The rocks there are enormous and would be very very
difficult to move. Today it is a popular tourist attraction and provincial
historic site so you can go visit if you're ever in the area.
And Number Six is Pembina Hall at the University of Alberta
Pembina Hall at one point in time served as a hospital during the Spanish flu epidemic and it now serves as a
student dormitory. So it's not really any surprise that if there was a building on
campus who was going to have ghosts, it would be Pembina, considering all the
people that probably died there. The most common ghosts that are reported
is that of a nurse and a soldier who died during the epidemic. Strangely as
far as I can tell the only ones that have ever seen the nurse ghost are men.
I don't know if she only appears to them because she would have been caring for
the soldiers or if women were just not conveniently located to see her.
