Big Little Lies filming locations in Monterey & LA, CA
Let's begin this day and this episode with a damn good coffee
in the Big Little Lies's characters favourite spot.
Big Little Lies is one of the greatest shows of 2017, produced by HBO and directed by Jean-Marc Valee.
It's been rewarded with 8 Emmys and 4 Golden Globes.
And we're in Monterey, a place where most of the exterior locations of the show can be found
and we want to take you for a little ride.
In real life that place that we've just visited is not a cafe. It's a restaurant
pretending to be a cafe, where BLL's characters often meet for a coffee.
As a matter of fact it's an Italian restaurant called Palluca Trattoria
and just until recently you couldn't even drink coffee there.
It changed when the show made this place famous, and people kept coming, asking for coffee.
The owner had to invest in a proper coffee maker and since then they're serving nice coffee there.
We know because we've just had one.
Not all footage was shot on the spot. The crew filmed only partly there.
Later they built a model of the restaurant in the studio in LA.
They've also changed a lot. We've been trying to recreate some frames from the show in real life
and we found that
proportions are different, the place doesn't look the same, other things can be seen in the background.
Behind my back there is another place from the show.
It's where you could see characters jogging.
Which is very much believable because it's a popular spot for morning and evening runs.
And here, at the parking lot - if you just turn left
- there's another filming location from the show. Characters parked there in one scene.
The whole Monterey feels like one big film set of Big Little Lies.
And as far as I know after second season the feeling will get even stronger.
I've read in the local newspaper that filming of the season two wrapped in June 2018
and they filmed in even more locations than previously.
On my left hand there is a marina with lots of yachts and boats moored to it.
Monterey is a little town of 28 thousand people,
and here, by the shore, is the most presentable area.
There's a boardwalk, and a Fisherman's Wharf,
where some of the footage from the show also has been shot.
I'm not surprised at all, because it's such an exceptional place.
But what's the most distinctive in Monterey is light.
It's just mesmerising
and Eves Belanger, the DC of the first season of BLL often emphasised in his interviews
that what he cares the most
during his work is the light.
He frequently works in natural conditions
- of course not when he's working in a studio
- but most of the time he relies on natural light, which here is phenomenal
at any time of day.
We're in paradise! It's such a great place, so beautiful..
and it's another filming location of BLL.
This place... this beach is where Jane used to run.
This is where she was jogging.
If you've ever wondered how it's possible that she could run on sand so easily - don't be.
This sand is firm and I would run myself
if I wasn't barefoot and wearing this skirt.
But this place is perfect for running.
You know what?
The more we explore Monterey, the more we realise this show is very faithful to reality.
Almost documentary-like.
Above the beach where Jane used to run, where we've just been, stands this building.
A condo that you can well remember from the show,
because there's where Celeste rented a studio.
A studio with an amazing ocean view.
People of Monterey are still excited with the filming of the second season of BLL,
which ended only two weeks ago.
Excited not only with the fact that the filming crew returned to town, but also that some of the residents had the opportunity to be on set.
And took some pictures.
JP, whom we accidentally met by the beach, is one of them.
After asking us about our filming equipment he told us his personal story
about the BLL crew that one day took his favourite working spot.
He even showed us some pictures of the event.
This place is called Lovers Point Park
and this is where they shot couple of scenes from the first season,
and maybe even some from the second, but we haven't been able to confirm it.
Right in front of us there is a very distinctive spot
with a beautiful bay area and ocean view.
It's where Madeline's current husband and her ex husband met.
In a show there was a bench
but in real life there is none. And there's probably never been any in this spot.
But you know, in TV shows altering reality is a norm.
Lovers Point Park is one of many spots in this area
where you can picnic and spend free time.
These great places were created for the locals
so they can come here on weekends.
Just beneath the park there is a beach where Jane's and Ziggy's picnic scene was filmed.
As you can see this place looks exactly the same as in the show.
It hasn't been altered in any way, no scenography has been built.
And it' feels so genuine! People really come here
to picnic with their children on weekends.
This place is called Point Lobos State Reserve
and it's a nature reserve where Jane also used to run.
Unfortunately, we couldn't find any specific frames from the show because this place is huge.
The area is so big and we don't have enough time to explore it properly.
And find our frames.
However what you can see is a change of scenery.
Until now we've seen only the azure ocean, the blue sky, bright, sandy beaches.
What we see here are the aggressive rocks and the ocean crashing on them.
You know - sea foam. There are also seals
and sea lions in the area.
- Listen, we were going to leave this place soon, because we thought there's no more to see here than some locations where Jane used to run but…
- It's impossible.
- This place is so much more and the environment is so diverse!
- We are totally shocked.
We just wanted to do our job here and find some locations. Instead we didn't find any,
we walked in the opposite direction and decided not to leave this place anytime soon.
- And it's like this…
I already mentioned that Monterey is like a film set of BLL.
But I had no idea that roads that we drive
between locations in the area are also present in the show.
This road, for instance can be seen in one scene with Madeline.
And where this road leads?
To one of the most recognisable locations from the show's opening.
We're approaching it now.
- And here's the bridge. The bridge at last. We've finally arrived. Well, don't fall of a cliff now.
On our journey we've finally reached a spot from the opening credits of BLL that is recognisable by almost everyone,
which is the famous bridge, spread above the sea, between two rocky mountains.
Let me tell you this - it's a vantage point. We've stopped here to film ourselves in front of the bridge.
Everybody else who stops here is taking pictures of the other side
because there's the astonishing rocky bay view.
There are cliffs overgrown by wild flowers and alpines.
But for us the most important is the bridge.
Besides the whole road leading here was exciting, since we found out it can also be seen in the show.
Well, everything was great.
Until we tried to turn round and we found…
- Wow, another bridge. I hope it's not the right one?
- Or maybe it is?
It is.
We've been flying our drone over a wrong bridge! We filmed the wrong bridge!
Just to be clear:
both bridges appear in the show. And both can be seen in the opening.
Rocky Creek Bridge is in the first frame but in the next one there's Bixby Creek Bridge
and that's the one that's usually associated with the series.
And here it is - the iconic bridge from the opening credits od BLL.
It's one of the most recognisable views in the show, even though it appeared only in the opening.
Well, maybe not ONLY in the opening, you can see it flashing in the background, but it doesn't play a prominent role.
People remember it mostly because of the opening.
What a fail. We've already visited another bridge
that we mistook for this one.
But it appears that there are more bridges in the area.All very similar to each other.
The other one was much smaller, but it also had a beautiful view.
Just take a look at it this one. Amazing!
BLL is being associated mostly with Monterey but not all locations from the show are located in the area.
To visit some spots we had to drive over 320 miles
to Los Angeles - the capital of film industry and Hollywood.
- This is the house.
- This one or that one?
- This one.
This is it.
The first BLL season has been filmed within 80 days.
20 of them were spent in Monterey
while the rest 60 filming days the crew spent in Los Angeles, where we are right now.
Take a look at these small houses - one of them
belonged to Jane and her son Ziggy.
This street also can be seen in the show
because Jean-Marc Valee and Eves Belanger wanted
locations in the series to be consistent.
Therefore the street in front of the house played itself
instead of being some random street in a different part of town.
Do you recognise these stairs? These also appeared in BLL.
We've seen Madeline climb these stairs,
illegally, because in the show they've been renovated
hence out of order and surrounded with yellow tape.
You won't find these stairs in Monterey,
or near Monterey, but in Los Angeles.
When you finally climb up these long stairs, (and you need to know that the heat is unbearable),
you will reach Barnsdall Art Park, one of LA's city parks.
This is where City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs is located.
Along with a gallery and a theatre - which you can see right behind me - which also appeared in BLL.
There's also a building designed by a famous architect
whose other building can be seen in another HBO's TV series - Westworld.
It's this building, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
The location that we had to visit during our Big Little Lies trip
was the school, where all children from the show attended.
The famous school which I imagined to be located on a hill but in real life is not.
In real life it's California's Kenter Canyon School, and we're in front of it.
In general it's very similar to what we could see in the show, but there have been some change made.
What stayed exactly the same is these blue poles and an awning covering part of the school yard.
Of course we're not able to get there but we can show it to you through the fence.
However the school entrance has been rebuilt almost completely.
For a moment we thought it's CGI
but it looks like the entrance has been recently renovated.
They added ramps and demolished some stairs.
Originally Liane Moriarty's book on which the first season of BLL was based upon
was set in Australia
but HBO decided to move it to Monterey, California.
In my opinion it was an excellent choice
since it's hard to imagine a better setting to tell this story.
Even better that for a second season, which is about to premiere at the beginning of 2019,
we'll be back to Monterey.
