In this first episode i will talk about
Game Audio "Introduction to Game Audio".
Let's begin with a quetion.
"What makes game audio unique?"
For the clear perspective
Let's compare film scoring and game audio scoring.
We will compare these objects with some aspects.
The first aspect is
Passive Vs Active Interaction.
One of characteristic of film is a linear.
The experience that gives to the audience is a passive interaction.
That's mean there's no interaction between audience and the media.
Different from the game.
That has characteristic of non-linear.
The experience that gives to the audience is a passive interaction.
That's mean, the player can interact and involved with the media to determine the results of the game.
Such as determine how long the game is finished
determine the actions in the game
until, determine an ending of the game.
This interactive experience affects how audio work in the game.
Because of that, the audio should be adapted based on the player decision and player interaction.
The second aspect is
Fixed and variable length of experience.
If we compare film to game, a film offer a fixed thing.
That's mean, the timing is fixed.
If we back to the last aspect,
that the player interaction could affect the game element.
This interaction also could affect to the timing or duration of the game.
A player has each timing to finish the game
that's why we can't measure the timing every player to finish the game.
Is that aspect could affect to how the audio works in the game?
Sure thing!
Another question is, how to bring film experience to the game with a lot of uncertainty of the game?
there is some technic in-game audio to solve this question.
One of the some is making loop-able music.
and another one is making adapted or interactive music.
These techniques we will share on another video.
The third aspect is
Game mechanics.
Different from the film, a game has a spesific mechanic that could affect the player experience
and dictating player interaction player into the game system.
Interestingly, the position of music or audio could be a game mechanic itself.
Because of that, there's a rhythm based game.
Such as
Guitar Hero
DubWars
Deemo
and etc.
The fourth aspect is
Synchronization.
Different from the film,
all elements in the game change based on player interaction.
Because of that, there's need a variative synchronization based on the game's element.
Such as
Location.
Player's health.
Movement.
Artificial intelligence.
and etc.
The last aspect is
Technology.
This aspect is very authentic.
Technology aspect is a basic for game audio development.
This aspect includes
First is Game platforms.
Game for pc
Mobile Game.
Console Game.
Handheld Game.
Second is Game Engine.
Every game engine has their own characteristic.
So we have to aware to the technical stuff like game engine optimization.
One of the example is we have to aware about the appropriate format audio for each game engine.
The third is Middleware.
This software (Middleware) helping us to implementation game audio to the game engine.
